Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart podcasts.
- 0:09Speaker 1: We'll get to our guest, Jeremy Piven in just a
- 0:10Speaker 1: second last topic though, speaking of the passion of NHL
- 0:13Speaker 1: players versus the lack of passion the NBA All Star Game.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Our buddy PK Suban, you've hosted Coast to Coast with
- 0:19Speaker 1: him Andy Patrello on Amazon. PK went on ESPN and said, hockey's.
- 0:23Speaker 2: A different sport from the NBA. You can't compare the
- 0:27Speaker 2: cultures because of the way the game is played. You
- 0:29Speaker 2: can step on an NBA floor and go through the emotions.
- 0:32Speaker 2: You can't do that in hockey. You can't like the
- 0:36Speaker 2: culture of our sport. You have to play it with passion.
- 0:40Speaker 2: You have to be willing to fight, you have to
- 0:42Speaker 2: be willing to leave it on the ice. That's what
- 0:45Speaker 2: fans are investing in. So for us, when we charge
- 0:48Speaker 2: fifteen hundred dollars for a ticket to come to fort
- 0:51Speaker 2: fans know what they're getting.
- 0:53Speaker 1: Again, I don't mean to be that guy Schirp in
- 0:54Speaker 1: the NBA, but if you've ever seen a greater Di comedy,
- 0:57Speaker 1: people what hockey all is all about, and that intensity
- 0:59Speaker 1: versus the lame mass NBA All Star Weekend.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Oh that was pathetic to watch that. I would love
- 1:06Speaker 3: to see the viewership. If anything, it was pathetic. And no, listen,
- 1:11Speaker 3: nothing against them, it's you. Listen to Kevin Durant. He
- 1:14Speaker 3: tweeted just today talking about retweeted yesterday just talking about
- 1:19Speaker 3: how he said, Hey, listen, like, maybe we just scrapped
- 1:23Speaker 3: the All Star Weekend because everybody's complaining and guys don't
- 1:26Speaker 3: try hard enough. And I'm like, that's you, guys. You
- 1:29Speaker 3: guys aren't trying hard enough. That's what's causing the problems
- 1:32Speaker 3: in the complaining. And then somebody's clapped back at him
- 1:35Speaker 3: and he just went, well, go watch hockey then, because
- 1:37Speaker 3: they seem to care a lot. And I'm like, are
- 1:39Speaker 3: you eating me? There's no other sport where they could
- 1:42Speaker 3: just openly shit on the fans and the fans are like,
- 1:45Speaker 3: here's my money, here's my money. Load. It's just load.
- 1:50Speaker 3: It's crazy. And listen, I've said it on multiple of
- 1:54Speaker 3: these of these episodes. Get your paper booboo. I'm like,
- 1:57Speaker 3: if you can find a way to hack the system, head,
- 2:00Speaker 3: good for you. I give you the golf clap, But
- 2:03Speaker 3: for canon. What makes me prideful to be a guy
- 2:07Speaker 3: who played in the NHL and representing his country is
- 2:11Speaker 3: the fact that we could put that all aside and
- 2:13Speaker 3: there's no friends. You could be playing with guys on
- 2:15Speaker 3: your same team and then you play against them because
- 2:18Speaker 3: they're from a different country, and there's such a melting
- 2:20Speaker 3: pot of guys and it's just balls to the wall. Man.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Guys just sacrifice themselves. This is middle of the season.
- 2:26Speaker 3: You're not getting paid for this. Yes there's a bonus
- 2:29Speaker 3: at the end, but you are not getting your predetermined contract.
- 2:33Speaker 3: You are getting a bonus if you win as a team.
- 2:36Speaker 3: The way these guys lay their their bodies on the line,
- 2:39Speaker 3: it's just it gives me chills. It gives me clammy
- 2:42Speaker 3: paws in my hands just thinking about it, talking about
- 2:45Speaker 3: it and watching these guys, it makes me I said,
- 2:48Speaker 3: I said it a couple of times in the last
- 2:49Speaker 3: few days. This has been one of the only things
- 2:51Speaker 3: that's made me want to come back as a player,
- 2:53Speaker 3: to experience that feeling again of just the buzz, the hum,
- 2:57Speaker 3: the fans, the country, the people like It's just this
- 3:00Speaker 3: is what makes hockey so great. And this is also
- 3:03Speaker 3: a magnifying glass of what makes basketball so great is
- 3:05Speaker 3: they don't truly care about It's very much an individual sport,
- 3:10Speaker 3: even though you're within a team. It's very individualistic the
- 3:13Speaker 3: culture of it. And I was sitting with somebody yesterday
- 3:17Speaker 3: for lunch and they told me something pretty interesting. They
- 3:19Speaker 3: said they were like the NBA All Star Game and
- 3:23Speaker 3: specifically the sport has really started to change since Kobe's passed.
- 3:26Speaker 3: Since Kobe was gone, the culture's tried to change because
- 3:29Speaker 3: he kind of moved the bus. Jordan as well was
- 3:32Speaker 3: doing that, but Kobe was the guy that took the mantle.
- 3:34Speaker 3: Then after that, how do you expect Like PK said
- 3:36Speaker 3: it perfectly, and I love what he said, how do
- 3:38Speaker 3: you expect Lebron's that, I'm out, I'm good, I don't
- 3:41Speaker 3: need to play it. And credit to him, He's created
- 3:43Speaker 3: a monster franchise around himself and and he's created this
- 3:47Speaker 3: brand that's synonymous with him and his lifestyle. But again,
- 3:52Speaker 3: people follow that, and then all the players follow that.
- 3:55Speaker 3: There's no accountability anymore. Guys don't hold each other accountable.
- 3:59Speaker 3: And then I just feel like Kobe's been a huge
- 4:01Speaker 3: missing piece in terms of culture within the NBA gamers.
- 4:05Speaker 3: So it's sad to see that Durant would even say
- 4:09Speaker 3: that because I'm a big proponent. You've heard me talk
- 4:11Speaker 3: about it before. I nan of respecting the fans because
- 4:14Speaker 3: without them, there's no money. Yeah, without them, there's no money.
- 4:17Speaker 3: The viewership is what drives money, drives brand deals, it
- 4:20Speaker 3: drives ratings, it drives TV deals. It's the fans that
- 4:24Speaker 3: show up, So you have to this is something for them,
- 4:27Speaker 3: for your country. You have to show up and show out,
- 4:31Speaker 3: and it just hasn't been the case. So, like I
- 4:34Speaker 3: said before, it's pathetic to.
