Latest / Bards and Barrels / S2 Bonus: The Opening Crack - Nordic Jam
Transcript
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: It's time for the opening crack, the sideshow to the DD show we normally do, where we taste and rank some epic brews.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: How are we doing tonight, fellas?
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Hey, it's a good night.
- 0:28SPEAKER_02: I'm doing well.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: Good, good.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: That's what uh that's the one of the answer I want.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: We're ready.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: And another week when Phil is gone, because Phil likes to travel the world.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: And Phil's a slacker.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: God for that's okay.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: We'll take shit for that when he comes back.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: Anyway, uh, it's time for another beer.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: This tonight, we're uh what are we drinking, Brett?
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Beer.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Good question.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Good question.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: No, we need answers from everybody.
- 0:55SPEAKER_02: Good job.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: We are drinking the Nordic jam from Two Pitchers Brewing out of Oakland, California.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Nice.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: This is a fun one.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this one's a little different.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: Like we've had we've had some sours.
- 1:08SPEAKER_02: We've had some uh the last beer that we did was a barley wine.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: Um, this one is unique in the sense that it's a very fruity beer, but not a sour.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: So I think it's uh definitely different from what we have been doing.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Yes, so this one is a lager with Nordic fruits, is kind of the style of it, and it's very fruity, not sour, just fruit forward.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:34SPEAKER_02: I would agree with that.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: Um got a very golden color to it.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: I I definitely taste strawberry on on the first sip.
- 1:42SPEAKER_02: I think they describe it as having you want to read the description really quick, that that might actually be helpful.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 1:47SPEAKER_00: So it says we've packed this lager with cherries, elderberries, and strawberries, all staples of a Viking's Viking warrior's diet to create a downright delicious party in a can.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Jam on, friends.
- 1:59SPEAKER_02: I like that.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: That's a pretty cool description.
- 2:01SPEAKER_02: Um, I definitely get strawberry.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: I I don't know if I've ever like had individual elderberries.
- 2:06SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I don't know what an elderberry is.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't know.
- 2:10SPEAKER_02: And maybe it's because like to me it's another berry.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, just another berry, right?
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: It's like cherries are like a to me, like a little deeper flavor, whereas strawberries are very bright, which is I feel like I taste strawberries, but maybe, maybe not.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: What do you guys think?
- 2:24SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 2:25SPEAKER_02: It's a whole lot of berry.
- 2:26SPEAKER_01: I don't ever eat fruit, so I don't know.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: You don't ever eat fruit, just none.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: That's why you have scurvy all the time.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: All my connective tissue is degrading in front of you.
- 2:38SPEAKER_01: Don't ever get scurvy, guys.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: If you get scurvy, drink this beer.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: Fan fiction, Damon is a zombie.
- 2:45SPEAKER_01: That's a real that's a real bad thing.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: You don't want scurvy.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: It's this is good, but it's like it's different than um I don't even know what to like if you try like a mixed berry juice candy, anything like mixed berry, this is different than that.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Because those typically have like raspberries and blackberries in it.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: Leagues don't have those, and so it's a a brighter type of berry mix.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I don't know.
- 3:18SPEAKER_01: I feel as though maybe I get more cherry coming through, but I don't really have any idea.
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: Um what's happening.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: I I Where are we?
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Who are we?
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: When are we?
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: What are we doing?
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 3:30SPEAKER_02: Do you one better?
- 3:31SPEAKER_02: Why are we?
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's to get into some uh deep thought here on the opening crack.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: But uh no, seriously though, I like for berries, like when I think when I think of sours, which is not a sour, I think of like a lot of tartness with it.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: So I kind of like the fact that this is a lager because it feels like it's a little smoother.
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: Yes, obviously, than most sour.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: So it's like even though it's fruit forward, it's not overly tart.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: And I I really like that about it, actually.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's very flavorful, not tart.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, this is one of those beers where it's like you know, the barley wine that we had is definitely a sipping beer, and then there are higher alcohol beers that you're like, this is delicious, but you really couldn't drink it while you're eating food kind of thing.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Cause like you can't take it.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: A chunk had like that heavy body to it.
- 4:16SPEAKER_02: Um, but this is one like I you eating food, like it's low enough alcohol content, easy drinking enough that you this would be very easy to drink with food.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: This would be like a lunch beer.
- 4:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think that's a fair I mean, are you going back to work after that?
- 4:31SPEAKER_02: But maybe it still comes in at a 5.2, so it's really no different than drinking like a core's light or something like that.
- 4:37SPEAKER_02: So it's still coming in right in the same ballpark.
- 4:40SPEAKER_02: Um what does the can look like, Brett?
- 4:43SPEAKER_01: That's a cylinder.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: Uh it has a pop top on it.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: It's got a blue ring around the top of it.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: I was just gonna say that's uh it'll contain 12 fluid ounces.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: And thank you for the very generic description.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: I appreciate that.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And a giant Viking stomping on a pile of berries with his sword stabbing through a strawberry and a cherry.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, I I really like the can.
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: Um, I even think because I think I got a six-pack of this or something, but I I even cut out the Viking on the picture to keep because I thought that was that was pretty cool.
- 5:22SPEAKER_01: The Viking is also wearing sunglasses.
- 5:24SPEAKER_02: That's because he's a cool Viking.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: I mean, you're on the high seas, you gotta protect your vision.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: And did he have he was using an axe and a sword?
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: Well, he set down the axe.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: The axe is on the ground, the sword is stabbed through, and then he's got a a horn that he must be drinking out of because it looks like it's sloshing some some of this Nordic jam out of it.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: He's also wearing a horned helmet, which my understanding is that Vikings did not wear horned helmets.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but it's still fun to imagine that they're fine.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: Because if that's the case, then the Minnesota Vikings are screwed.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: So it does say skull on it.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: It does say skull, it does go Vikings, right?
- 6:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: Um yeah.
- 6:10SPEAKER_02: I think it's fun.
- 6:11SPEAKER_02: I mean, technically in DD style, I think technically even though he's drinking in one hand and weapon in the other, I think it's still dual-wielding in this case, in my mind.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, this is a beer you have to have if you're a fan of DD, like with a Viking on it.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I thought that was pretty cool too.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: That's probably one of the reasons why I grabbed this.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Are there Vikings in DD?
- 6:28SPEAKER_02: There can be.
- 6:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and they and they do have like the Nordic pantheon of gods, like Odin and them are available to use for like character creation too.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: So you can be Odin?
- 6:40SPEAKER_02: No, you can't be Odin, but you could like use them as a deity for your character kind of thing.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: Oh, your character of Odin.
- 6:48SPEAKER_02: Do you get special Odin powers for that?
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, you could homebrew some stuff, but I mean really following specific god doesn't necessarily it's more like flavor for your character.
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: Like my character in our DD campaign follows tier.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Are there other pantheons of gods?
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: Are the Greeks there?
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: The Greeks are of the Romans?
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: You can do whatever the heck you want.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: But but in the like official book, they're they're there, yeah.
- 7:11SPEAKER_02: And then there's also like DD specific gods, too.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: So this is a hyper pan religious environment.
- 7:19SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 7:21SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 7:22SPEAKER_02: So anywho, uh let's talk a little bit about taste profile.
- 7:27SPEAKER_02: We did talk I'm helping.
- 7:28SPEAKER_02: You you are no, it's fine.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: I was not judging one bit about anything.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, I mean, we we talked a little bit berries.
- 7:35SPEAKER_02: I mean, let me get there.
- 7:36SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 7:37SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: No, absolutely.
- 7:38SPEAKER_02: The the four the the most high profile taste in this is the berries.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: No real describable malt in this um or yeastiness or anything like that.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: So it's like it Damon, do you disagree?
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: No, I don't I don't necessarily it's hard to say.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: I I am getting sort of a sort of a cloying aftertaste.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: The longer that I the longer that I let it sit in between sips.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: It comes in later.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: And uh like usually with a lager you get that sort of nice crisp sort of finish at the end of it, and it just kind of disappears off of your tongue.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: And I'm not having that experience with this.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: It's as though all of the fruit is sort of lingering on my tongue in a way that I I don't necessarily enjoy that much.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: I was just gonna say that too.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: It's like it's not the it doesn't feel like the beer is what lingers, it's definitely the fruit flavors that seem to linger.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: It's like that twang.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I I think you're right.
- 8:41SPEAKER_02: Uh as far as we know, there was no IBU listed anywhere for this beer.
- 8:46SPEAKER_02: So hoppiness is not really a thing, although hops typically are in lager and help with the flavor profile, but I don't taste anything that would you can't have a beer without hops.
- 8:56SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: So it's got some IBU.
- 8:59SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: We assume it falls somewhere on the scale.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: Very low.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: Very low.
- 9:05SPEAKER_02: That's right.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Um mouthfeel body.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: This is a very life, light life, a very life.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: It's a very light beer.
- 9:13SPEAKER_02: Um is life.
- 9:16SPEAKER_00: What is life?
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: This is one that kind of made me go, woo, I'm awake after I had a first sip of it, though.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: Like it's I would agree with that.
- 9:25SPEAKER_02: Bright.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: It's very bright.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that's a good way to describe it.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: Uh, but let's head to Fey Rune.
- 9:31SPEAKER_02: Uh, this should be a fun one to describe uh and where in DD we would find this beer and what it's called.
- 9:37SPEAKER_02: Brett, do you want to kick us off this week?
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: So this one, I'm gonna go up to Luskin, which is way up in the north, and this one is not gonna be found in a pub.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: Oh, this is gonna be brewed by Marta Skyberg.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Marta.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: Marta.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: I think that was one of the kids in uh that nun movie.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: Sound of music.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: That nun movie.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: We but we all knew what I was talking about.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: She was the little one, wasn't she?
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: Marta?
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 10:07SPEAKER_02: Uh maybe.
- 10:08SPEAKER_02: I think you were.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: I don't I just want to know how many people ever described the sound of music as that nun movie.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: I mean, what are your two options?
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: Your options are sound of music or sister act.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: I was going to Sister Act.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: You're gonna get it in at least two guesses.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying that's not how I would describe Sound of Music.
- 10:25SPEAKER_02: That World War II.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: You know, there's a lot of ways you could go about that.
- 10:30SPEAKER_02: That nun movie is probably not how, and yes, I would go for Sister Act or Sound of Music.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: You know, Whoopi Goldberg in this in this beer.
- 10:38SPEAKER_00: Wasn't there a horror film The Nun?
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: Probably.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: Probably not the first one you would have picked.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: No.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: No.
- 10:47SPEAKER_01: But did it have a character named Marta?
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: Uh no.
- 10:50SPEAKER_00: No, it's Sister Irene.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: Is that right?
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Sister Act could have.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: We don't know.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: Oh, there's no Martas and Sister Act.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: You don't know that.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: You don't know all the sisters in that movie.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: Well, they're all like Sister Mary Catherine.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: We just know Sister Mary Clarence is Whoopi's Clarence.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Let's get back to the beat anyway.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: So Marta is homebrewing this one.
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: So she just has a whole big garden outside of her house up in the north.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: And she grows a lot of strawberries, a lot of cherries, a lot of elderbries.
- 11:23SPEAKER_00: And just mashes them up inside the house because she does, she has too many, they're kind of growing out her ears, and she doesn't know what to do with them.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: So she just brews her up own little batch.
- 11:33unknown: Yeah.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: Help tide her over over the winter.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: I like that.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: It does have that kind of my um my grandma used to make wine, homemade wine.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: It does kind of have that sort of homemade wine.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: The only way you're gonna go get a taste of it is if you go stay and chat with Marta.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Yep, that makes sense.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: She serves it with fish, probably.
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: She does, and you're gonna have to sit there for about six hours minimum.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: Like she's a talker.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: She doesn't get very many visitors.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: No.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: When she does, you're there.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: You're there.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: You're gonna hear the stories.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: And help her with some sort of project around the house while you're there.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: You're gonna hang some pictures and you're gonna talk about the war.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: You're gonna move the desk.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: You're gonna sit there and talk about the war.
- 12:16SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: You remember my son?
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: He served in the war.
- 12:20SPEAKER_01: You mean my dad?
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I remember him.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Which war?
- 12:23SPEAKER_02: You remember the big war, the one we all talked about.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: It was in all the papers.
- 12:27SPEAKER_01: The one with the dragon harvest.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: That one, yes.
- 12:29SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: The dragon, the war at the dragon harvest.
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: Something like that.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, there you go.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: The Great War.
- 12:36SPEAKER_02: The Great War.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:39SPEAKER_01: Damon, where are you gonna find this beer?
- 12:41SPEAKER_01: Well, you're gonna find this at Nick's Discount Apothecary.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: Is that where Marta works?
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Discount worries me here.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 12:52SPEAKER_01: Um and the name of this this beer in Fey Rune is Back Alley Nonsense.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: This is Back Alley Nonsense.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: It's available at Nick's Discount Apothecary.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: And there you go.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: That's all you got?
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: That's what it is.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: I'm finding it what's the price?
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: Oh cheap.
- 13:18SPEAKER_02: Discounted.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: Three silver pieces.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: Is that cheap?
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 13:23SPEAKER_01: Then yeah.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 13:25SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: I've uh Seven copper.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Seven copper.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: You know how um when you have a a uh fruit flavored medicine or something, um and you take it and then like that like that flavor just hangs around in your mouth forever.
- 13:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:51SPEAKER_01: That's the kind of feeling that I have.
- 13:53SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: From this beer.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: So uh this is uh some this is some back alley nonsense.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:00SPEAKER_02: Ross, where's yours?
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: Uh this is coming from the uh uh uh Helmshold at the old Odin's Beard Brewery.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: And this one is called Thor's Thundering Tonic.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: Made with cloud berries, lingamberries, elderberries, and rowan berries.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: Oh all those, by the way, are real berries.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Cloud berries are real berries?
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: Apparently it's a real thing.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: You can add me in the comments if you don't like if you don't like the berries that I chose.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Can I grow those here?
- 14:28SPEAKER_02: I'm going, I'm adding you right now.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: Cloudberries.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: Uh no, but I thought I thought that kind of stuck with the Nordic theme.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: Uh I I held fast in the the Nordic pantheon with the Odin and Thor references.
- 14:41SPEAKER_01: So do you think that we can get elderberries here?
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: You can mana Chev's makes elderberry wine.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Or no, the yeah, elderberry wine.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: I would like to just taste an elderberry.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, like the legit berry.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: To see what it's like.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: It's growing zone growing zones three through seven.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: So maybe.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: And what are we?
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Six?
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Five?
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Somewhere in there.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Have you planted any?
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: No.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: He's going to now though.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: But I might.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: You could be Marta.
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: We can make Marta can make Thor's Thundering Tonic for little for reels.
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Cloudberries, on the other hand, come from the Arctic Tundra.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, so probably not here.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: Probably not here.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: No, no, no.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: I have to put those in our freezer during the summer.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: And now we go from Backyard Farmer to our rating scale where we rate this beer on uh Dean.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: Don't you have listeners in Germany?
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: We do, yes.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: Prost to all those Germanys out there, all our listeners out there in Germany.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: All our Germany.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: That's what we want to know.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: And also, can you send us some?
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: Look up Backyard Farmer.
- 15:53SPEAKER_01: If you don't get the reference, you'll enjoy it.
- 15:56SPEAKER_02: It's a lovely show.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: It is a good show.
- 15:59SPEAKER_02: So on a scale of one to 20, DD style, uh a one being like uh your domestics, your cream ales, things like that, a 20 uh on uh in terms of like a d20, being double IPAs, imperial stouts, things like that.
- 16:14SPEAKER_02: Uh fellas, where are we finding this beer on the scale this week, Brett?
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Oh man.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking like a two.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Like this is Damon's going complete opposite game.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: Just wait.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: I didn't start with Damon, but Damon's gonna go like a 19.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: Uh this is like a two for me.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: Like, if you like a a fruit popsicle, you could do this.
- 16:44SPEAKER_00: I wholeheartedly agree with that, actually.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Damon?
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: I was 16 is my number.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: Who would have guessed?
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: I think we have different uh different taste profiles.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think for sure.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Who who would have guessed?
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: I'd why 16.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: Well, I I just I this is this has a this has a lot going on and it it has some sort of tartness that sort of hits you right at the start of it or hit me right at the start of it.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: Um I okay, I think that if this is on the if this is on the board on the list of things and people see, oh, cherry, strawberry, elderberry, I think that they are more likely to give that a go.
- 17:39SPEAKER_01: But I don't know how much more likely they are to enjoy it.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 17:44SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: You know what I'm saying?
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Um I think it's one of those things that sometimes beer sounds more approachable than it is.
- 17:56SPEAKER_01: I I agree with that.
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Like that but that barley wine was like eating a brownie.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: Um but it's barley wine and it's 13%, and that would scare people away from it.
- 18:07SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah, I don't know.
- 18:12SPEAKER_02: Uh I I'm I'm I'm a surprise bright here.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: I'm actually gonna go with an eight on this one for similar reasons to that.
- 18:20SPEAKER_02: I think I think people see a lager and a low ABV and it makes it very approachable to them, and it's very drinkable.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: Don't get me wrong.
- 18:26SPEAKER_02: I I like it.
- 18:28SPEAKER_02: What's gonna scare them off is the fact that if you go into this expecting a beer, it's not super beery, and that fruit and that tartness may be off-putting to some people.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: So I I put it in eight.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Next time, Damon, we need to make Ross go first.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he just copies, he like finds the middle.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: Oh, I don't.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: Okay, maybe I do sometimes.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: But hey, I that was a good reasoning for that.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Oh give me that crap.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Okay, I think part of it is it's it's difficult to sort of guess at what someone's understanding of what a beer is.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: Sure, you know.
- 19:05SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: So and 16.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: As a reminder, like the challenge rating is not necessarily like, is it a good beer or not?
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: No.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: That's just is it approachable to somebody who's getting into beer and or really likes beer and is looking for something a little bit more unique.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm thinking of kind of in terms of sort of how far outside of the norm is it, I guess.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: Which, if that's the case, then I should change the number that I gave to the barley one.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: But it's too late for that, I assume.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: That's that's a ways back.
- 19:38SPEAKER_02: We're not gonna go back to that.
- 19:39SPEAKER_02: Uh so yay or nay, are you gonna would you would you go back to this one at some point, Brett?
- 19:44SPEAKER_00: I definitely would.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: Like, this is one that I would like to like be playing yard games in the summer and sipping on.
- 19:51SPEAKER_00: Now, Damon, on the other hand, I think just had his first experience in the the fruit section of the food pyramid.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: So, Damon, what would you say?
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: I don't like new things.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: Scurvy.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: Remember scurvy.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Take anything from this episode, Damon has scurvy.
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: This is this is probably a nay for me.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:11SPEAKER_01: If the question is, do I want more?
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: I'm shocked.
- 20:16SPEAKER_02: Uh I I go yay.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: I I agree with Brett.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: I think this would be great on a hot day.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: Um, and it's approachable enough and it's easy drinking enough.
- 20:25SPEAKER_02: I have zero problems with this beer.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: So I think it's right up there.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: If you're out in the Bay Area, you can find this one uh at Two Pitchers Brewing in Oakland, California.
- 20:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, you can also visit them at their website, twopicters.com.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: But uh that's gonna do it for this bonus episode.
