- 0:01Speaker 1: Are you blind when you're born? Do you see in
- 0:05Speaker 1: the dark?
- 0:06Speaker 2: Ah?
- 0:07Speaker 1: Yes, if you looked at a king, would you sit
- 0:11Speaker 1: on his throne? Would you say that your bite? Is
- 0:14Speaker 1: it worse than your bark?
- 0:17Speaker 2: People have said that.
- 0:19Speaker 1: So those are lyrics from uh jelical Cats from the
- 0:24Speaker 1: musical Cats.
- 0:25Speaker 2: The musical Cats music.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Spoiler alert, we will be discussing today. And as someone
- 0:34Speaker 1: who as a person of listening to Macavity and Skimbleshanks
- 0:40Speaker 1: the Railway Cat at least twice a day, that's just
- 0:44Speaker 1: the way I thought of to start this episode.
- 0:48Speaker 2: Yes, I mean I am. I feel like, Okay, honestly,
- 0:53Speaker 2: let's just dive right into it.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Well, Virginal, Let's like, let's like say hi, like blah
- 0:57Speaker 1: blah blahh.
- 0:57Speaker 2: Virgins Hi, It's me frand Toroto. I don't really like
- 1:02Speaker 2: Cats the musical. It's not really music that I have
- 1:06Speaker 2: ever really liked. Rose, you bought me tickets to see
- 1:12Speaker 2: Cats the Jellico Ball on Broadway for my birthday.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I did.
- 1:16Speaker 2: It was one of those.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I was actually like kind of nervous that you wouldn't
- 1:23Speaker 1: like it.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I was nervous that I wouldn't like it. I didn't
- 1:27Speaker 2: say that to you.
- 1:27Speaker 1: I was actually kind of nervous that I wouldn't like it.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yes, yes, I mean yes, And obviously we had a ball.
- 1:36Speaker 2: We're going to get into it. But Rose, in the
- 1:39Speaker 2: time since I last saw you on Thursday, what's been
- 1:41Speaker 2: going on? Anything fun, anything juicy in your social life,
- 1:45Speaker 2: your personal life?
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yeah? Well, this weekend was Memorial Day weekend, long weekend,
- 1:50Speaker 1: and I went out of town. I was in the
- 1:55Speaker 1: Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. My friend friend Paul Leopold was
- 2:06Speaker 1: is starting this sort of like art camp experience.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Does that have a name.
- 2:17Speaker 1: Called camp camp? And this weekend was sort of like
- 2:21Speaker 1: the I don't know, like proof of concept, like test
- 2:26Speaker 1: run of it. And a bunch of us gathered in
- 2:31Speaker 1: a house in the Poconos in Pennsylvania and did a
- 2:36Speaker 1: couple of days of programming, lots of like a group
- 2:39Speaker 1: group workshops and an open mic night like cabaret show
- 2:45Speaker 1: that I read something in. I also DJed a dance party. Yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 1: and it was really fun.
- 2:52Speaker 2: Did you play the Klang Klang remix?
- 2:54Speaker 1: I did? Yeah, I mean I like kind of had
- 2:57Speaker 1: to and like it definitely you know, killed and was
- 3:02Speaker 1: the moment that everyone got very excited about. But like,
- 3:04Speaker 1: the thing is I now kind of have to retire
- 3:07Speaker 1: that track?
- 3:08Speaker 2: Well, I think you should kind of. I think, Okay, DJ,
- 3:14Speaker 2: here's the thing. Can I ask you a question about
- 3:15Speaker 2: DJ culture, Like are there specific tracks where DJs have
- 3:19Speaker 2: it in their back pocket and they're like, I know
- 3:21Speaker 2: that the kids are waiting for me to play this
- 3:23Speaker 2: song that they expect me to play like that or
- 3:27Speaker 2: is it more kind of like if you're a DJ,
- 3:29Speaker 2: you must never play the same thing twice and so
- 3:33Speaker 2: it's like, you know, you're expected to actually surprise everyone always.
- 3:38Speaker 1: I guess, like you have to know DJ pretty well
- 3:42Speaker 1: and see them pretty often too write their set list
- 3:46Speaker 1: that well. I mean, I, you know, had a somewhat
- 3:51Speaker 1: unique experience and that when I was DJing, the most
- 3:55Speaker 1: often I had, you know, a weekly party I played
- 4:00Speaker 1: pretty regularly. So yeah, like I did kind of have
- 4:03Speaker 1: some signature tracks that people who came to a lot
- 4:07Speaker 1: of my gigs were used to hearing. And I guess
- 4:12Speaker 1: also as someone who plays whose sets are more kind
- 4:16Speaker 1: of like trolley remix heavy, like, yeah, that's more a
- 4:21Speaker 1: part of my experience. If you're playing like random, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: voiceless techno tracks. Maybe people are not quite as used
- 4:30Speaker 1: to that, but I kind of when I, you know,
- 4:34Speaker 1: dj it again for the first time in a long
- 4:35Speaker 1: time at Doll Invasion last year. I really had to
- 4:38Speaker 1: build my set from the ground up. So it's not
- 4:43Speaker 1: like I'm playing the same songs I was when I
- 4:46Speaker 1: was DJing regularly almost a decade ago.
- 4:49Speaker 2: However, when you were building that foundation, one of the
- 4:53Speaker 2: bricks in It's in its foundation was the Klang Klang
- 4:59Speaker 2: remix Wait is it called wait Man?
- 5:01Speaker 1: Actually?
- 5:01Speaker 2: Let me let me not actually give the track ID.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I would never mind. No, it's a remix of a
- 5:08Speaker 1: remix by Judy Garland, and it's very artful and tasteful
- 5:11Speaker 1: and delicious. Yeah, it's a really good club mix. But
- 5:17Speaker 1: I even I DJ'ed off of cdj's this weekend. It
- 5:20Speaker 1: was truly back in business. That's amazing. I remember you
- 5:24Speaker 1: were saying you wanted.
- 5:25Speaker 2: To do a little DJ. You did a little DJ practice.
- 5:28Speaker 2: I didn't actually, Oh, I thought you went. Well, I
- 5:32Speaker 2: that never happened. I would go with you.
- 5:34Speaker 1: But this weekend there were so The house we were
- 5:38Speaker 1: in was this crazy airbnb that was giving kind of
- 5:43Speaker 1: like seventies party house, Like I kept expecting to turn
- 5:46Speaker 1: a corner and see a conversation pit, but there was
- 5:50Speaker 1: a full in the basement. There was a full dance
- 5:53Speaker 1: club like disco tech cool, as well as a speakeasy
- 5:57Speaker 1: that was hidden behind us like opening bookcase. Okay, And
- 6:06Speaker 1: why was I bringing that up?
- 6:08Speaker 2: I think you were just describing the weekend.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Oh oh, because I did. At one point there was
- 6:14Speaker 1: there was a full CDJ setup in that secret basement club,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and I was just going to play off my computer
- 6:22Speaker 1: but ended up like plugging it into the CDJs and
- 6:25Speaker 1: I did kind of like a cursory like, oh, let
- 6:28Speaker 1: me see if I can still mix thing, and it
- 6:31Speaker 1: was like riding a bike.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Yeah, baby, I need to learn how to DJ.
- 6:37Speaker 1: I could like maybe teach you at now at this
- 6:40Speaker 1: point I think I would you should be taught by
- 6:42Speaker 1: someone better.
- 6:44Speaker 2: But people don't go to d I mean, I know
- 6:45Speaker 2: DJ school is a thing, but that's like ghosh, right,
- 6:48Speaker 2: Like I feel like all the DJs that I know in.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I need to have you need to have a friend
- 6:53Speaker 1: kind of show you the ropes that that or at
- 6:56Speaker 1: least that is what worked for me. And also I
- 7:03Speaker 1: do think that at a certain point you need to
- 7:05Speaker 1: just kind of like throw yourself into a situation where
- 7:08Speaker 1: you are actually DJing for people and just kind of
- 7:10Speaker 1: figure and that's the deadline. How was your Memorial Day weekend?
- 7:15Speaker 1: What did you were on Fire Island again?
- 7:18Speaker 2: It was really good. I was just gonna say, visions,
- 7:20Speaker 2: if there's anybody that wants to teach me how to DJ,
- 7:24Speaker 2: we teach me how to teach me. I also was
- 7:29Speaker 2: gonna say, the virgins can't see, but we have kind
- 7:32Speaker 2: of we kind of have the same haircut now, I mean,
- 7:33Speaker 2: you have more fashionable French bangs.
- 7:37Speaker 1: I'm so happy that I cut off over five inches
- 7:42Speaker 1: of hair. I have felt so free and it's actually
- 7:46Speaker 1: been one of the first times where I've gotten a
- 7:48Speaker 1: haircut like this dramatic and not regretted it immediately afterwards.
- 7:53Speaker 2: You feel so free.
- 7:55Speaker 1: My hair is so healthy because I cut what mostly
- 7:59Speaker 1: what I was my stylist cut out were my highlights.
- 8:02Speaker 1: So this is all very like fresh and I'm really
- 8:06Speaker 1: just enjoying kind of growing it out, and I like
- 8:08Speaker 1: having short hair for summer. It's just so much easier
- 8:13Speaker 1: to deal with, and it's gonna grow, and it's gonna grow.
- 8:18Speaker 1: Here's the thing about hair it grows.
- 8:21Speaker 2: That was me doing the run from stateside.
- 8:23Speaker 1: Okay, tell me, tell me about your holiday weekend.
- 8:26Speaker 2: I went to Fire Island with my secret boyfriends, my
- 8:31Speaker 2: not so secret boyfriend secret anymore. I mean I posted
- 8:34Speaker 2: about him, but your secret.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Boyfriend who he and I have now followed each other
- 8:37Speaker 1: on Instagram? Really?
- 8:39Speaker 2: Oh my god, Wow, it's real, It's real. I it
- 8:45Speaker 2: was really fab I would say that the highlight of
- 8:49Speaker 2: my weekend. Well, I went to mother Disco, a party
- 8:52Speaker 2: by Tom Capalonga and Emil Cohen. If you've never been,
- 8:56Speaker 2: it was great. I had an absolute ball. Did you
- 9:02Speaker 2: have a Jelica? But did I have a Gelica ball
- 9:05Speaker 2: remains to be seen. I mean they did play I
- 9:08Speaker 2: Feel Love by Donna Lumber I think three times.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Okay, so.
- 9:13Speaker 2: They played one more time by fucking what is it?
- 9:17Speaker 2: Daft Pop? They played that twice. I was just kind
- 9:22Speaker 2: of like, wait, what do you DJs do? I'm like,
- 9:24Speaker 2: so no shade to amal that way? Like everybody was
- 9:26Speaker 2: loving and.
- 9:28Speaker 1: That actually reminds me of a musical that I'm currently concepting,
- 9:34Speaker 1: a Black Eyed Peas jukebox musical called American Elephunk Pump
- 9:39Speaker 1: it Out exactly that's the number of at.
- 9:44Speaker 2: The oh yeah, yeah, yeah, Okay, I was gonna say
- 9:46Speaker 2: so then what was so? And obviously the finale song
- 9:49Speaker 2: is where It's the love but where you know me
- 9:52Speaker 2: so well? What's is the opening the.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Opening number is I got a feeling the opening numbers.
- 9:58Speaker 1: I gotta feeling.
- 9:59Speaker 2: That's a pretty hard that's a pretty fucking bang harang intro.
- 10:03Speaker 2: Are you sure that's like that's kind of you're blowing
- 10:05Speaker 2: your load right off the bat.
- 10:07Speaker 1: No, because there's still some that's the thing of the
- 10:09Speaker 1: Black Yeah, they.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Have so many hits, there's so much left to go.
- 10:13Speaker 2: The thing that was, and.
- 10:14Speaker 1: We are including select Fergie and Will I Am solo
- 10:18Speaker 1: tracks like Scream and Shout featuring Britney Spears is in
- 10:21Speaker 1: the musical. I mean that's yeah, it's fur delicious and
- 10:26Speaker 1: Big Girls Don't Cry is sort of the eleven o'clock number.
- 10:29Speaker 2: I mean, it's the same for the same reason. Destiny's
- 10:32Speaker 2: Child are Beyonce songs. Okay, Fergie songs are black Eyed Peas.
- 10:37Speaker 2: Our black Eyed Peas songs are for when I exactly
- 10:40Speaker 2: when when I decide they're not they're not. Yeah, that
- 10:45Speaker 2: album back to back No skips. I literally could not
- 10:51Speaker 2: stop sinking pump it this weekend. I don't know why
- 10:53Speaker 2: I have like a black eyed peas association with fire
- 10:57Speaker 2: fire monkey business. Just really, you know, I get it.
- 11:01Speaker 2: It fits. The most newsworthy noteworthy thing that from this
- 11:08Speaker 2: weekend is that me and my housemates watched Mannequin starring
- 11:12Speaker 2: Kim Katral.
- 11:13Speaker 1: You know, I've actually never seen it.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Oh my god, I wish we had watched it together.
- 11:18Speaker 1: What a fire island ass movie to watch?
- 11:21Speaker 2: Well, I had never seen a movie.
- 11:24Speaker 1: That is probably kind of bad and has an iconic
- 11:28Speaker 1: track that Detox loves to lips like two.
- 11:30Speaker 2: It literally, oh it does.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I don't know. Nothing's gone to stop us now?
- 11:35Speaker 2: Oh yeah yeah.
- 11:36Speaker 1: De Talks has long done this really great performance where
- 11:40Speaker 1: she does both does that number and just like stands
- 11:45Speaker 1: like a mannequin with her purse open for people to
- 11:47Speaker 1: put money into it.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Oh, I've seen video of that. She's literally so talented.
- 11:55Speaker 2: If you're not familiar with Mannequin the nineteen eighty seven,
- 12:00Speaker 2: I have like sci fi rom com We're in Kim Katrell,
- 12:03Speaker 2: who is an Egyptian deity from from a century centuries
- 12:10Speaker 2: ago millennia ago. Is reincarnated into a mannequin, so.
- 12:16Speaker 1: It's sort of like the Mummy, but for girls.
- 12:19Speaker 2: It's, uh, well, the Egyptian thing is really never brought back.
- 12:24Speaker 2: It's it's it's it's the intro of the movie, and
- 12:27Speaker 2: then it never really comes.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Back into like she is still kind of giving tep she.
- 12:31Speaker 2: Is a mummy in the beginning of the film. I
- 12:33Speaker 2: will say that it is honestly like, has Kim Katrell
- 12:37Speaker 2: ever starred in a film? Like was this her only
- 12:42Speaker 2: starring role?
- 12:43Speaker 1: Question mark? She I think it might have been.
- 12:45Speaker 2: The movie has a thirty percent of Rotten Tomatoes. I
- 12:48Speaker 2: would say that that is a kind of I think
- 12:51Speaker 2: that ranking is too low. I don't think it was
- 12:52Speaker 2: an amazing movie, but I think that ranking is too low.
- 12:55Speaker 2: And I thought that Kim Katrell was sub lime and
- 13:01Speaker 2: the movie I'm not going to talk about it for
- 13:02Speaker 2: too long, but the movie is like also weirdly like
- 13:04Speaker 2: pro gay for nineteen eighty seven, Like there's this there's
- 13:08Speaker 2: this like sidekick character that has pretty much the most
- 13:13Speaker 2: lines out of anyone outside of Kim Katroll and the
- 13:16Speaker 2: and the the love interest, and he's like a flaming
- 13:20Speaker 2: homosexual kind of like Andre Leon Tally type gay guy
- 13:24Speaker 2: window dresser. Wait, actually, can I just tell you something
- 13:28Speaker 2: really funny about the plot? Yeah, Okay. Basically, there's this
- 13:33Speaker 2: guy who he literally can't keep a job he keeps,
- 13:36Speaker 2: he's routinely getting fired from jobs. He has a job
- 13:39Speaker 2: as making mannequins and he makes he's making a mannequin
- 13:43Speaker 2: in the form of Kim Control, and he kind of
- 13:45Speaker 2: falls in love with this mannequin as he's making it.
- 13:47Speaker 1: He's like, does he give it a hole? Yeah?
- 13:49Speaker 2: He does, Yeah, he gives it a two, well, three
- 13:52Speaker 2: different holes to give it. He gives it. He gives
- 13:54Speaker 2: a three different holes and a cock. I won't tell
- 13:56Speaker 2: you where, Yeah, you can guess. But he's making this mannequin.
- 14:01Speaker 2: He literally falls in love with it, and he's like,
- 14:03Speaker 2: oh my god, you're my finest creation. And then he's
- 14:05Speaker 2: fired in this man well kind of well, he's fired
- 14:08Speaker 2: from this mannequin making job, and then he and then
- 14:10Speaker 2: you know, you know, weeks later, he spots the mannequin
- 14:13Speaker 2: in a window and he's like, oh my god, it's you.
- 14:15Speaker 2: It's my creation. I'm in love with you. And he
- 14:18Speaker 2: like applies for a job as a window dresser. And
- 14:20Speaker 2: when he's like doing the window dressing, he discovers late
- 14:23Speaker 2: at night that Kim Katrell comes alive. If he is
- 14:26Speaker 2: the only one around, she can't be seen by anyone
- 14:29Speaker 2: else as a human being. But when it's only him
- 14:32Speaker 2: and her, she's a human being. And so each night
- 14:36Speaker 2: toy story rules. It is literally toy story rules. And he,
- 14:41Speaker 2: you know, stays up at night and makes fabulous window
- 14:43Speaker 2: dressings starring Kim Coatrol in the window, and the window
- 14:47Speaker 2: dressings go essentially.
- 14:49Speaker 1: Viral to the window viral ral.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Well, everyone's like crowds of people running up to the
- 14:57Speaker 2: window screaming, oh, oh my god, this is the the
- 15:00Speaker 2: coolest one do I've ever seen.
- 15:01Speaker 1: As people are wanting baby, and they say really good
- 15:04Speaker 1: window display.
- 15:04Speaker 2: Yes, and at sales are through the roof, baby.
- 15:08Speaker 1: I mean, the only thing you need to get good
- 15:10Speaker 1: sales is a really fierce window display. Yes.
- 15:13Speaker 2: The competing department store next door, Ilustra, sales are down
- 15:18Speaker 2: forty percent. They're like, we gotta get this window dresser.
- 15:20Speaker 2: They try poaching the window dress they try poaching this guy.
- 15:23Speaker 2: He's like, I can't leave, I can't leave my my job.
- 15:26Speaker 2: But really, what he's thinking, is like, He's like, I
- 15:27Speaker 2: can't leave Kim Catral I need her to do what
- 15:29Speaker 2: I do and her cock yes, and it's like it's
- 15:33Speaker 2: so weird. It's like a department store rivalry based on
- 15:36Speaker 2: window dressing. It's hilarious. Wait, nothing's gonna stop us now.
- 15:42Speaker 2: Was nominated for an oscar.
- 15:44Speaker 1: And it should have won.
- 15:45Speaker 2: It should have won.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Anyways, well, I really need to finally watch Mannekin. As
- 15:52Speaker 1: we're on the topic of movies. I actually have two
- 15:54Speaker 1: res yes for you and the Virgins. The first one
- 15:59Speaker 1: is which I know you're planning to see, and we
- 16:03Speaker 1: will discuss at length on another episode. Maybe. I did
- 16:07Speaker 1: see Obsession yesterday, the krey Barker directed and written horror film,
- 16:14Speaker 1: and my top line note since we're not going to
- 16:17Speaker 1: go in depth now, is just I did really like it.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I think we are getting a little bit caught up
- 16:24Speaker 1: in what I will call long legs itis of everyone
- 16:27Speaker 1: being like, oh my god, this is the scariest movie ever,
- 16:29Speaker 1: this is the best movie of the year, and I'm like, oh,
- 16:32Speaker 1: I mean, this is a good horror movie. But it
- 16:33Speaker 1: was like likely overhyped, I think so, And probably part
- 16:37Speaker 1: of the problem was I waited so long into its
- 16:40Speaker 1: run for me, like I am usually like an opening
- 16:43Speaker 1: weekend diva that it has been. I've now gone through
- 16:48Speaker 1: weeks of hype with it, so it had to be
- 16:52Speaker 1: a little bit of a letdown. But I still really
- 16:55Speaker 1: enjoyed it, and I especially enjoyed the performance by Indian Avarett,
- 17:00Speaker 1: who is the lead actress, who's getting a lot of
- 17:04Speaker 1: very well deserved praise for it. But the people who
- 17:07Speaker 1: are saying that she's giving like Isabella Johnny in possession
- 17:12Speaker 1: level performance, I don't know quite about that. Maybe she's
- 17:19Speaker 1: it's more like Miagoth and Pearl, which is still okay.
- 17:22Speaker 1: She said that she was inspired by She said she
- 17:26Speaker 1: was inspired by Mi a Goths Pearl performance. Yes, so
- 17:29Speaker 1: I'm very excited for you to see it so we
- 17:31Speaker 1: can discuss it. And I guess, like I would really
- 17:34Speaker 1: love to give you and the virgins maybe some some
- 17:37Speaker 1: food for thought just as you're watching it, to think
- 17:40Speaker 1: about ahead of our discussion. Is just like, what is
- 17:46Speaker 1: this movie kind of saying about our contemporary culture? What
- 17:50Speaker 1: is this movie saying particularly about straight people? To head
- 17:55Speaker 1: her a sexual culture movie?
- 17:57Speaker 2: Oh yeah, big, big time?
- 17:59Speaker 1: Okay, And yeah, I don't know. I think that's kind
- 18:04Speaker 1: of yeah. I just want to want to hear your thoughts.
- 18:06Speaker 1: But the other film wreck I have for you is,
- 18:11Speaker 1: so have you seen or heard of this film? The
- 18:13Speaker 1: Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo Not at all? Okay, So
- 18:17Speaker 1: we watched it this weekend at Camp Camp. It is
- 18:21Speaker 1: a twenty twenty five Chilean film written and directed by
- 18:26Speaker 1: Diego Sorry if I'm mispronounced. Athetis suspetus, and it is
- 18:34Speaker 1: one of my few five star letterbox ratings of the year.
- 18:39Speaker 1: It is a really beautiful art house film that takes
- 18:43Speaker 1: place in Chile during the AIDS crisis and is about
- 18:48Speaker 1: a house full of I mean, you know what we
- 18:52Speaker 1: understand now to be trans women at the you know,
- 18:55Speaker 1: in the film and at the time, and in that culture,
- 18:59Speaker 1: you know, the cross dressers, gay men, you know, they
- 19:02Speaker 1: kind of they just call them all marigonne. And it
- 19:07Speaker 1: is this really beautiful, violent, sexy story about a young
- 19:15Speaker 1: girl whose mother is one of these trans women. This
- 19:21Speaker 1: like young I would say, probably like twelve eleven, twelve
- 19:23Speaker 1: year old girl was like left outside of their house
- 19:28Speaker 1: as a baby, and this woman, Flamingo Flamenco raised her
- 19:34Speaker 1: and she is dying from AIDS and a lot of
- 19:38Speaker 1: the other women at the house also have AIDS, and
- 19:44Speaker 1: it is The movie really dabbles in kind of magical
- 19:48Speaker 1: realism and surrealism. It has one of the best sex
- 19:53Speaker 1: scenes I've ever seen in film. It has some really
- 19:56Speaker 1: amazing tribute visual visuals. It made me absolutely sob incredible performances,
- 20:04Speaker 1: especially all of the women of this house are really amazing.
- 20:10Speaker 1: It's super funny but also really sad. I was gonna
- 20:13Speaker 1: ask if it was like a hundred if if it
- 20:15Speaker 1: was like one hundred percent prestige depressing or no, no, no,
- 20:19Speaker 1: definitely not. It has. It has so many moments of
- 20:22Speaker 1: lightness and it's it's I think the magical realism kind
- 20:27Speaker 1: of lifts it out of being like a sad queer
- 20:29Speaker 1: movie because it does, like even kind of early on
- 20:32Speaker 1: hit some beats that I was like, okay, like in
- 20:36Speaker 1: a different kind of less well made movie, I really
- 20:38Speaker 1: wouldn't like.
- 20:39Speaker 2: This, but.
- 20:41Speaker 1: It just worked really fabulously, and I left the film
- 20:47Speaker 1: just kind of thinking like, oh my god, I love
- 20:49Speaker 1: trans women so much. I really I highly highly recommend
- 20:55Speaker 1: I know you personally, I will love it. It is
- 20:59Speaker 1: definitely like Banano adjacent.
- 21:03Speaker 2: I added it to my watch list. As we were talking,
- 21:07Speaker 2: I immediately thought of Vanano. I'm gonna see it, like yeah,
- 21:11Speaker 2: in the coming weeks. I can't wait. Okay, the film
- 21:14Speaker 2: I saw an our house film. Have you heard about
- 21:16Speaker 2: Blue Film?
- 21:17Speaker 1: I have heard about Blue Film.
- 21:18Speaker 2: I haven't seen it yet, though I don't want to
- 21:20Speaker 2: talk about it at length. It is in a similar category.
- 21:25Speaker 2: It is an American film that I saw I see,
- 21:31Speaker 2: written and directed by Elliott Tuttle, and it's about a
- 21:37Speaker 2: camboy who has been offered fifty thousand dollars to spend
- 21:41Speaker 2: a night with one of his viewers, and he the
- 21:46Speaker 2: man who opens the door, is like is wearing like
- 21:49Speaker 2: a ball of clava and wants to remain anonymous, and
- 21:52Speaker 2: sets up a camera and tries to like interview him
- 21:54Speaker 2: and ask him questions, and this story kind of unfolds
- 21:57Speaker 2: from there. I don't really I think you would like
- 22:00Speaker 2: this film, bros. If I'm like thinking about it based
- 22:07Speaker 2: on the specific things that you like or don't like,
- 22:10Speaker 2: but maybe not. I don't know.
- 22:12Speaker 1: I'll probably see it because like it is, like you know,
- 22:14Speaker 1: it seems to be the gay movie of the moment
- 22:17Speaker 1: that a lot of people I know are talking about
- 22:19Speaker 1: and I'm I'm I am interested.
- 22:21Speaker 2: The thing. The thing that I'll say is it's a play.
- 22:25Speaker 2: It's literally just the two of them in an Airbnb listing.
- 22:27Speaker 2: There's a nothing else that there's no other setting or characters,
- 22:30Speaker 2: so it's just dialogue. It's a play. It's a low
- 22:33Speaker 2: budget film. You have to sign up your signe. If
- 22:35Speaker 2: you're watching, you're signing up for that. The other thing
- 22:37Speaker 2: I'll say is that it's depiction of sex work I
- 22:41Speaker 2: think is really fucking good. I think it is like,
- 22:46Speaker 2: I think the characters are extremely real, and I do
- 22:49Speaker 2: think that the film is trying to genuinely ask some
- 22:52Speaker 2: questions that are like questions that aren't typically asked in film,
- 22:59Speaker 2: and has there's an interest in the inner life of
- 23:01Speaker 2: a sex worker that is not always present in films
- 23:05Speaker 2: about sex workers, which I think is really cool. And
- 23:08Speaker 2: I'll also say that, yeah, like the Gay Twitter is
- 23:10Speaker 2: kind of like, this is the most shocking movie ever.
- 23:14Speaker 2: It's so you know, transgressive, blah blah blah, and it
- 23:18Speaker 2: is extremely transgressive like that when you there's like a
- 23:22Speaker 2: reveal of some kind and that becomes an extremely twisty,
- 23:29Speaker 2: morally precarious, kind of like territory that the conversation turns into.
- 23:34Speaker 2: But I do think that it's it's a fascinating conversation,
- 23:37Speaker 2: and I did I really liked the film.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Okay, well, that made me excited to watch it. Eventually.
- 23:44Speaker 1: I'll get around to it.
- 23:45Speaker 2: Yeah, it's not I wouldn't prioritize.
- 23:47Speaker 1: I do want to get to our cat's convos. So
- 23:49Speaker 1: I feel like, let's let's kind of move past the
- 23:52Speaker 1: other stuff. I will let everyone know that I did
- 23:55Speaker 1: finish Malcolm in the middle, so we will discuss it
- 23:58Speaker 1: at some point. The finale of the Boys it is
- 24:01Speaker 1: not worth talking about. It was bad. So yeah, let's
- 24:05Speaker 1: talk about the jellical ball I girl.
- 24:09Speaker 2: So, as we said at the beginning of the conversation,
- 24:13Speaker 2: didn't I don't like this musical. I don't like it.
- 24:16Speaker 2: I I don't. It's too fantastical if you're an if
- 24:20Speaker 2: you are unfamiliar with cats the musical which when does?
- 24:25Speaker 2: When did this come out? The nineties and the eighties
- 24:27Speaker 2: In the eighties, a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, which
- 24:32Speaker 2: adapts a really cooky book of poems by T. S.
- 24:35Speaker 2: Eliott that are like heavy only ts heavy on the ts,
- 24:40Speaker 2: extremely surrealist. The plot centers, and I'm using the word
- 24:44Speaker 2: plot generously, a tribe of cats called the Jellicles uh,
- 24:50Speaker 2: who are coming together for their annual ball uh and
- 24:54Speaker 2: one of them will enter the heavy side layer, which
- 24:57Speaker 2: is essentially their version of like Cat Heaven.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Gets to be Reborn. So the musical is at its
- 25:05Speaker 1: core a bunch of cats giving shows trying to figure
- 25:09Speaker 1: out who gets to die.
- 25:11Speaker 2: They're auditioning for heaven for Heaven, yeah, yes, and it's
- 25:15Speaker 2: each Almost every song is like a kind of character
- 25:20Speaker 2: study song.
- 25:20Speaker 1: It's like a cat being like, Hey, this is my name,
- 25:24Speaker 1: this is what I'm into, this is why I should
- 25:27Speaker 1: get to be reborn. That's the whole musical, Yes, whole musical.
- 25:31Speaker 1: There's there's an aging glamour cat called Grizabella, who all
- 25:35Speaker 1: the other cats are mean to. There's a horny cat
- 25:39Speaker 1: named rum Tum Tugger. There's Gus, the theater cat. There's
- 25:42Speaker 1: all these cats. That's why it's called cats.
- 25:44Speaker 2: There's all these cats, and it's literally in the text
- 25:49Speaker 2: of the musical. They are literal cats. They're purring, they
- 25:52Speaker 2: have tails, they have ears, they have like cat faces.
- 25:56Speaker 2: They're prancing all around with cat like choreography. They're literal cats.
- 26:00Speaker 2: And I will also say the original musical is like
- 26:03Speaker 2: dead fucking serious, like it's it's it's I don't know, No,
- 26:08Speaker 2: it's supposed to be funny. There are jokes, there's like
- 26:12Speaker 2: surprise and delight. But the film is I mean sorry,
- 26:16Speaker 2: the movie, sorry, the musical and then obviously the movie adaptation.
- 26:20Speaker 2: They're dead serious.
- 26:21Speaker 1: I mean, but you said you have not seen the original, correct.
- 26:26Speaker 2: I've seen foot I've seen clips of the movie, which
- 26:29Speaker 2: is the musical.
- 26:31Speaker 1: Okay, but like as someone who grew up watching the
- 26:36Speaker 1: recorded the like pro shot version of Cats the Musical,
- 26:40Speaker 1: which was like a big kind of VHS in the nineties.
- 26:44Speaker 2: I remember the advertisements for it on my.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I will say, like, yes, Cats takes its premise seriously.
- 26:52Speaker 1: It is about a bunch of cats. But the show
- 26:55Speaker 1: is very silly, and it has this sort of of
- 26:58Speaker 1: course cultural you know, fog of kind of camp and
- 27:05Speaker 1: ridiculousness around it. So I will say, like, it commits
- 27:09Speaker 1: to the bit, but it is still like very self
- 27:11Speaker 1: aware of how kind of dumb.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I think it's self aware. And now, baby, I don't
- 27:18Speaker 2: know if at the time it was like, I mean,
- 27:22Speaker 2: obviously there's like a I just feel like how it
- 27:26Speaker 2: was presented and it's very, very very initial, like at
- 27:30Speaker 2: the very beginning, I feel like it was not aware
- 27:34Speaker 2: like that.
- 27:35Speaker 1: I think it was. You can't have I think, and
- 27:38Speaker 1: furry leotards dancing around and not understand what you're doing
- 27:43Speaker 1: at least a little bit.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Well.
- 27:45Speaker 1: I think Andrew laid Weber took it very seriously, and
- 27:48Speaker 1: I think the production is somewhat aware of its bombacity.
- 27:54Speaker 2: Okay, there we go. I I oh that it's settled.
- 27:57Speaker 1: I war is over.
- 28:01Speaker 2: War is over? I really I went. So if you're
- 28:04Speaker 2: not aware there was a revive, there's a revival of
- 28:09Speaker 2: cats called Cat's the Jellicle Ball. It emerged off Broadway
- 28:13Speaker 2: last year question question mark the year before, the year before,
- 28:17Speaker 2: and was a smash hit. I would say pretty quickly, no,
- 28:22Speaker 2: like yeah, it was.
- 28:23Speaker 1: The talk of the town. It was like it was
- 28:25Speaker 1: giving like, uh, you know Hamilton before.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Transferred vibes, Yes, same thing with O Mary it was,
- 28:32Speaker 2: and it transferred it to Broadway earlier this year, I believe.
- 28:40Speaker 3: And it is the the the flip it and reverse
- 28:48Speaker 3: it of this staging is that the characters are not cats.
- 28:54Speaker 2: Nary a cat was found, but what we did find.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Was pussy puss see me ow cats, yes, and so
- 29:07Speaker 1: well for me, Well for me.
- 29:09Speaker 2: The framing of this edition of Cats is not jellical
- 29:14Speaker 2: ball featuring actual felines. It is a ball set in
- 29:20Speaker 2: like modern day, set in like literally twenty twenty six,
- 29:23Speaker 2: Like the costumes are lifted from Fulton Street, Rainbow like
- 29:27Speaker 2: ast fucking wigs plus on fourteenth it's actually wig and
- 29:32Speaker 2: plus wig and plus thank you and thank you for
- 29:35Speaker 2: saying that.
- 29:36Speaker 1: I wasn't gonna let you dead named my sister.
- 29:40Speaker 2: And the each song when they're introducing these specific cats,
- 29:45Speaker 2: it's like the houses. That's like the House of Macavity,
- 29:48Speaker 2: the House of Dots, the house, and they're presenting themselves
- 29:52Speaker 2: as runway as ballroom categories.
- 29:55Speaker 1: Which is you know, since this was first announced, it's
- 30:00Speaker 1: just such a genius concept that makes so much sense because,
- 30:04Speaker 1: as we said, Cat's the musical, it's literally a bunch
- 30:08Speaker 1: of cats giving shows. Yes, it is textually a.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Ball, it is lit it is a literal ball. And
- 30:18Speaker 2: I think the other thing is like when I heard
- 30:23Speaker 2: about this musical, when I heard about this staging. I
- 30:28Speaker 2: I thought it was going to be dumb mad.
- 30:31Speaker 1: I thought it was going to be too I thought
- 30:34Speaker 1: it was going to overcommit to the bit and that
- 30:37Speaker 1: it was just going to get old, and that I
- 30:41Speaker 1: would find some way to not be charmed and to
- 30:46Speaker 1: be cynical about it. And I was absolutely unable to
- 30:54Speaker 1: summon up any cynicism.
- 30:57Speaker 2: No, none, none, with pure joy, babe.
- 31:00Speaker 1: If you're two and a half hours of pure ecstasy,
- 31:03Speaker 1: unbridled joy, I from the I will say, like from
- 31:08Speaker 1: the moment in the opening number when the cast kind
- 31:13Speaker 1: of snaps together and starts voguing down the stage in
- 31:19Speaker 1: perfect unison. I was locked in until the second the
- 31:24Speaker 1: actors left the stage at the end of the curtain.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Call, and like it's absolutely same, and we're gonna like
- 31:29Speaker 2: dive right into this. I'll also contextualize, like I was
- 31:34Speaker 2: also feeling so skeptical. There were three three primary reasons. First,
- 31:40Speaker 2: Broadway the whitest art form humanly imaginable. All of the funders,
- 31:47Speaker 2: all of the patrons, all of the consumers, all of
- 31:49Speaker 2: the Broadway goers, all the whitest, often oldest kind of
- 31:55Speaker 2: demographic or crowd for any art form that you can
- 31:58Speaker 2: go to and so when I heard that there is
- 32:00Speaker 2: like a predominantly black, overwhelmingly black edition of Cats, the
- 32:05Speaker 2: jellical ball in the imagination of Ballroom, that of which
- 32:10Speaker 2: you know, as is the case of any Broadway show,
- 32:13Speaker 2: white people are the arbiters and funders and direct often
- 32:17Speaker 2: like kind of overseers of this thing. I'm feeling very
- 32:21Speaker 2: like worried about what a projection of whiteness is going
- 32:25Speaker 2: to look like on what is like essentially, I mean,
- 32:27Speaker 2: ballroom is like my second favorite art form.
- 32:28Speaker 1: Next, you're just sort of like a cat. You were
- 32:30Speaker 1: like a cat arching its back with you. Yes, I
- 32:32Speaker 1: was like, hey, standing on.
- 32:33Speaker 2: End, you're like And then the second thing in my
- 32:36Speaker 2: mind is I was like, I think Cats is actually
- 32:38Speaker 2: a bad musical, and so I kind of feel bad
- 32:40Speaker 2: that all of these fucking ballroom divas have to like
- 32:43Speaker 2: do their fucking Dopez art form to like what is
- 32:46Speaker 2: ultimately like bad music and a bad musical. So I
- 32:50Speaker 2: was thinking about that. And then also, third, this is
- 32:52Speaker 2: my this is my most cynical I'm like, Oh, they're
- 32:55Speaker 2: like nineteen Broadway debuts in this production, a lot of newbies.
- 33:00Speaker 2: I'm like, I'm worried that the divas aren't gonna be
- 33:04Speaker 2: able to sing?
- 33:04Speaker 1: You thought they were going to suck?
- 33:06Speaker 2: I thought that I was worried about this singing specifically,
- 33:08Speaker 2: I was like, I'm worried the divas are not going
- 33:10Speaker 2: to be able to sing, which is baby?
- 33:13Speaker 1: How wrong were you?
- 33:15Speaker 2: I was proven?
- 33:17Speaker 1: So fucking don't you look stupid? Oh?
- 33:20Speaker 2: Do I ever? I mean the show opens with egg
- 33:23Speaker 2: on your face? I do. The show opens with a DJ,
- 33:27Speaker 2: you know, sifting through a milk crate of vinyls and
- 33:30Speaker 2: he's lifting up different vinyls, being like, what should I play?
- 33:32Speaker 2: Should I play Donna Summer? Should I play like this?
- 33:35Speaker 2: And then he lifts up a vinyl of The Cat's Musical.
- 33:40Speaker 1: And you know that DJ is played by one of
- 33:43Speaker 1: the original cast members of the Broadway production of Cats.
- 33:46Speaker 2: Yes, it was like all of these like winks and
- 33:49Speaker 2: play and like calls back to the Dynasty of Cats
- 33:53Speaker 2: and the dynasty of Ballroom wrapped up in this production.
- 33:57Speaker 2: And he goes up and he plays anyway. So the
- 33:58Speaker 2: DJ goes up and he plays the Cats, the Cats
- 34:01Speaker 2: the musical as if they're about to do a ball
- 34:04Speaker 2: to this vinyl, which I think was very I thought
- 34:06Speaker 2: it was very clever and funny and fun girl. I
- 34:12Speaker 2: had to prevent myself from crying two separate times, and
- 34:14Speaker 2: then finally cried the third time. And we'll talk about
- 34:16Speaker 2: that cry. But another trope in this staging of Cats
- 34:21Speaker 2: the Jelical Ball, is that because it's a ball, there
- 34:26Speaker 2: are judges, they recruit judges to join them on stage.
- 34:32Speaker 2: And like bear witness to the first half of the
- 34:34Speaker 2: of the competition.
- 34:35Speaker 1: And listeners, this was gag city.
- 34:39Speaker 2: Gag city, bitch.
- 34:40Speaker 1: This was gag city because the audience starts cheering as
- 34:47Speaker 1: the judges are led up to the stage and the
- 34:50Speaker 1: judges are none other than renowned designer Mark Jacobs and
- 34:56Speaker 1: Frans old Boss and a win tour.
- 35:00Speaker 2: Ah ah, it was a night that we were there.
- 35:04Speaker 2: On the night that we were there, on the night
- 35:06Speaker 2: that it happened, Diva, I was so googa gagged. It
- 35:11Speaker 2: also was amazing to watch rum Tom Tugger, who is hot,
- 35:14Speaker 2: by the way, hot like essentially Gyra on Enna hot.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Oh.
- 35:18Speaker 2: He was shoving his cock in her bob, his pussy baby,
- 35:23Speaker 2: his pussy cracked the lenses of her sunglasses with his cock.
- 35:30Speaker 2: I something that I think I routinely saw in this
- 35:34Speaker 2: production was that the players really got to be one
- 35:40Speaker 2: hundred percent ballroom like. There was a lot of call.
- 35:43Speaker 2: There was a lot of references to cats, Like there
- 35:46Speaker 2: was like, you know, a girl that might wear like
- 35:48Speaker 2: kind of pigtail buns that look like cat ears are
- 35:51Speaker 2: like where the kind of like cat girl headphones with
- 35:54Speaker 2: free ear muffs or whatever. There are a lot of
- 35:58Speaker 2: fur coats, right, but ultimate like they got to be
- 36:01Speaker 2: literally just like ballroom divas. And I was like, oh
- 36:05Speaker 2: my god, all these cats are like little sluts. They're
- 36:07Speaker 2: all little sluts, and they're all cunty county like they.
- 36:10Speaker 1: All have like hunting boots.
- 36:11Speaker 2: They're all like fucking forty inch human units like and
- 36:15Speaker 2: and also a lot of them.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Got to be I mean, misters, her unit might have
- 36:20Speaker 1: been longer than forty inches.
- 36:22Speaker 2: It was some long hair. Maybe it was a well
- 36:24Speaker 2: over half the length of her body. When her body
- 36:27Speaker 2: was long and her body was long. The it got
- 36:31Speaker 2: this stage you got to be so stupid, like there
- 36:33Speaker 2: were so many different There are a lot of interjections
- 36:35Speaker 2: and like extra bits of dialogue and jokes and punchlines
- 36:39Speaker 2: that they threw into the script.
- 36:41Speaker 1: And also like that funny and that weren't like really
- 36:44Speaker 1: dumb down for the mainstream audience, and like I felt
- 36:49Speaker 1: very similarly as when the first time I saw O
- 36:53Speaker 1: Mary on Broadway, just like so appreciative that this very
- 36:58Speaker 1: queer piece of work was being presented in this very
- 37:03Speaker 1: you know, non insulated queer space, but was really not
- 37:07Speaker 1: dumbing itself down for a predominantly straight audience.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Exactly, it didn't. It didn't have to contextualize it. It
- 37:15Speaker 2: didn't have to contextualize itself, really, and you either get
- 37:18Speaker 2: it or you don't, and everybody because it's because the
- 37:21Speaker 2: cast is having so much fun and because outside of
- 37:26Speaker 2: like the first couple songs after the after the intermission,
- 37:30Speaker 2: like it's just the most high energy show ever.
- 37:33Speaker 1: Okay, who are your favorite Cats?
- 37:37Speaker 2: Obviously rum Tum Tugger played by Sidney James Harcourt. Oh
- 37:40Speaker 2: my god, he I'm like, why am I bricked up
- 37:43Speaker 2: at Cats? Right now? I was literally literally horny. I
- 37:48Speaker 2: was so under I was so hot for him.
- 37:52Speaker 1: But for I will say my MVP of the show
- 37:57Speaker 1: was definitely the rumble teaser, the the railway cat Uh incredible,
- 38:08Speaker 1: like one of the highlights of the show. Like I
- 38:13Speaker 1: think in the regular Cats that song. Uh no, sorry,
- 38:18Speaker 1: I meant Skimball Shanks, Kimble Skimble Shanks, the Railway Cat.
- 38:23Speaker 1: I think that really, that is a song that, like
- 38:26Speaker 1: always has existed to kind of wake up the second act,
- 38:30Speaker 1: and in this show it was elevated to such an
- 38:34Speaker 1: amazing level. It was so much fun. It's one of
- 38:38Speaker 1: my favorite songs from the show. I also love Macavity.
- 38:44Speaker 2: Laomi, Yes, well, I love that.
- 38:46Speaker 1: I like the number Macavity, which Macavity doesn't actually sing
- 38:50Speaker 1: in because Mcavity is not really a singing part. It's
- 38:53Speaker 1: more of a dancing part. And it was such a.
- 38:58Speaker 2: Great numb and a great use of Laomi are great
- 39:03Speaker 2: use of Laomi. I the diva that played Skimble Shanks
- 39:07Speaker 2: and Sophia, Oh my god, she looked like she was
- 39:10Speaker 2: twelve years old. She was so fucking talented. There's a
- 39:14Speaker 2: moment in her song as Skimble Shanks where they're pretending
- 39:19Speaker 2: that they're on a subway, and it was top three
- 39:22Speaker 2: most favorite moments of the entire musical. City Rose and
- 39:25Speaker 2: I are sitting next to each other, and throughout the
- 39:28Speaker 2: entire musical, not only are we along with the audience
- 39:31Speaker 2: routinely standing up and clapping because we are so rowdy,
- 39:35Speaker 2: is so overwhelmed with a moment.
- 39:36Speaker 1: I literally elbowed the woman in front of me in
- 39:38Speaker 1: the head, standing to a PLoud after memory, and she
- 39:43Speaker 1: did turn around and give me a dirty look. And
- 39:45Speaker 1: I just wanted to be like, well, why aren't you standing, bitch?
- 39:47Speaker 2: And why aren't you standing? I also like you, and
- 39:51Speaker 2: I that something that I noticed routinely throughout the whole
- 39:54Speaker 2: throughout the whole musical, would say, involuntarily at full volume
- 40:00Speaker 2: at a Broadway show, oh my god. Like we kept
- 40:04Speaker 2: being kept being like, oh my mid oh my god.
- 40:09Speaker 1: And it was really a show that encouraged that level
- 40:13Speaker 1: of participation. You know they say at the beginning to
- 40:17Speaker 1: make noise, interactive and interact like this is this is
- 40:20Speaker 1: not your mother's cats?
- 40:22Speaker 2: Ye, yes, oh my god.
- 40:28Speaker 1: You better work. I just kept screaming that you better work.
- 40:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna start doing that at all Broadway shows now. Yes,
- 40:34Speaker 1: It'll be like the end of On My Own and
- 40:37Speaker 1: lay Miss, and I'll be like, you better work.
- 40:39Speaker 2: Yeah, you're seeing Nathan Laynon at them a salesman. You
- 40:42Speaker 2: better work.
- 40:43Speaker 1: It's like it's like night mother, there's two women on stage.
- 40:46Speaker 2: You better work, better work, Oh girl, ecstasy. I okay, Uh,
- 40:55Speaker 2: if you don't know who LAMI is, you really should,
- 40:58Speaker 2: sadly legendary is not.
- 40:59Speaker 1: You might you might actually if you log open Instagram
- 41:02Speaker 1: right now.
- 41:03Speaker 2: I'm sure insta right she might be on Instagram at
- 41:07Speaker 2: the story moment. She is an actual icon of the
- 41:11Speaker 2: ballroom scene, queen of the dip, and and she said
- 41:15Speaker 2: she she did two dips that I I felt, well,
- 41:20Speaker 2: let me not actually, let me not say, let me
- 41:22Speaker 2: not say what I thought about the dips. But what
- 41:24Speaker 2: I will say is that she was magnanimous and so
- 41:28Speaker 2: fucking funny. There's like a moment where she like does
- 41:30Speaker 2: this like she kind of like did her like hair
- 41:33Speaker 2: flip until she like went all the way to the ground.
- 41:36Speaker 1: Oh yeah, that was That was fun.
- 41:38Speaker 2: The Cat all of the Cats just got to be
- 41:40Speaker 2: really contemporary and stupid and funny and fun. And it
- 41:44Speaker 2: to me, the reason I, at the beginning of this
- 41:45Speaker 2: conversation was talking about how the original Cats was dead
- 41:49Speaker 2: serious is that I thought that even though there's like
- 41:52Speaker 2: dead serious moments after the intermission that are you know,
- 41:55Speaker 2: they are what they are, ultimately I thought that they
- 41:59Speaker 2: it got to be really stupid, like in a way
- 42:02Speaker 2: that ballroom is, in a way that and and in
- 42:05Speaker 2: the way that Kats is. They got to kind of
- 42:07Speaker 2: be like, we know that this is stupid, and actually
- 42:09Speaker 2: like this is how we have fun like being and
- 42:12Speaker 2: we're leaning into the stupidity, and we can lean into
- 42:15Speaker 2: the stupid stupidity while having jaw dropping choreo and the
- 42:20Speaker 2: divas are belting like the music was. Everyone sounded good.
- 42:26Speaker 1: Everyone sounded great. They sounded amazing together. The orchestra was fantastic.
- 42:32Speaker 1: It was one of the better things I've seen on
- 42:35Speaker 1: Broadway in a really long time.
- 42:38Speaker 2: Same I haven't hed it.
- 42:39Speaker 1: It's also the kind of show that I feel like
- 42:42Speaker 1: would be really enjoyable to see multiple times. If that's
- 42:45Speaker 1: your fantasy, I would love to see it again. If
- 42:48Speaker 1: anybody wants to take me, I will go take us.
- 42:51Speaker 1: I want to sit on stage this time.
- 42:53Speaker 2: Oh I do not want that. I want to see
- 42:55Speaker 2: I mean no.
- 42:57Speaker 1: I would like to, especially because there was a really
- 42:59Speaker 1: tall guy sitting in front of me and was blocking
- 43:01Speaker 1: my sightline for much of the first act.
- 43:04Speaker 2: That's a sorry yawning.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Okay, okay, we have to talk about memory. Obviously, they're
- 43:13Speaker 1: the the gag of sitting in a Broadway house and
- 43:21Speaker 1: watching a black trans woman eat memory. One of the
- 43:28Speaker 1: most famous Broadway torch songs, maybe like the most ubiquitous,
- 43:34Speaker 1: you know, Broadway ballad ever. Maybe it could be.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Playing none other than, but played none by none other
- 43:41Speaker 2: than Chastity Moore, who is a icon in the scene
- 43:46Speaker 2: famously walks beem queen face. I think I think she Yeah.
- 43:51Speaker 1: Anyways, it was such a moment of like unreality to
- 43:57Speaker 1: be experiencing that, like looking around and being like, oh,
- 44:00Speaker 1: like that's so fucking cool that that is what I'm
- 44:03Speaker 1: experiencing right now. And she ate down. She looked incredible
- 44:10Speaker 1: voice and body. Both Tea loved her.
- 44:15Speaker 2: And you know, all of these cats are all of
- 44:19Speaker 2: these cats are reinterpreted as like archetypes in the ballroom scene, right, So,
- 44:23Speaker 2: Macavity and her cronnies are kind of like pickpockets who, like,
- 44:29Speaker 2: you know, steal.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Like it's giving abundance.
- 44:32Speaker 2: Yes, it's giving house of abundance. They're like stealing headphones,
- 44:35Speaker 2: they're stealing wallets, They're like running through with their trash bags. Grizabella,
- 44:40Speaker 2: her archetype is she's like a retired ballroom queen. Her
- 44:44Speaker 2: like her prime days are behind her. She's wearing an
- 44:47Speaker 2: old four coat and a beat up Louis Vuitton bag
- 44:50Speaker 2: with a garbage bag inside of it that has her trophy,
- 44:53Speaker 2: like her time is like over quote unquote, you.
- 44:55Speaker 1: Have definitely seen this woman.
- 44:57Speaker 2: You've seen this woman. You've seen this woman and you
- 44:59Speaker 2: are it was She was so real and heartbreaking. The realness,
- 45:05Speaker 2: the realness, and the song Memory has a kind of
- 45:15Speaker 2: banger rang third chorus like that is really like you've
- 45:23Speaker 2: heard Barbara sing it, You've heard Bet sing it, You've
- 45:25Speaker 2: heard every single tour song.
- 45:27Speaker 1: Diva one of the best to ever do it.
- 45:31Speaker 2: And girle Anna. This the way it's staged is so genius.
- 45:38Speaker 2: The direction for this musical overall, like I mean, they're
- 45:41Speaker 2: not it's there. It's no wonder that it's nominated for Tony,
- 45:44Speaker 2: but it's so well directed. In stage, girl Rose and
- 45:47Speaker 2: I I rose and I audibly crying during this song.
- 45:52Speaker 2: I was hearing your sniffles. I was like, Okay, now
- 45:55Speaker 2: I can I can cry. Now you can let loose,
- 45:57Speaker 2: I can let.
- 46:00Speaker 1: We need to get Lucy Luduca in magellical Ball.
- 46:03Speaker 2: Oh, she would eat, she.
- 46:05Speaker 1: Could be, she can be Skimble Shanks is understudy.
- 46:08Speaker 2: She good? Yeah, I'm like, who else should be in
- 46:12Speaker 2: this musical? Honey Balenciaga as Skimble Shanks honestly f K.
- 46:17Speaker 1: Twigs like can do like a you know, a limited
- 46:21Speaker 1: limited engagement?
- 46:23Speaker 2: Uh, Law Roach as the Andre has he has he
- 46:27Speaker 2: been a guest judge yet? Uh? He has because he's
- 46:29Speaker 2: all he's a producer as well, right right, right, but
- 46:32Speaker 2: he's been he's been a guest judge. I think I
- 46:34Speaker 2: don't know if he's on the Broadway version, but he
- 46:36Speaker 2: definitely did it for off Broadway. Yeah, I Law would
- 46:40Speaker 2: be great as like the MC honestly or honestly, mister Msopheles. Uh.
- 46:50Speaker 2: There are just so many divas that would eat in
- 46:51Speaker 2: this musical. I hope it. I hope you know when
- 46:53Speaker 2: A Cats in its heyday like was at one point
- 46:57Speaker 2: the longest running musical on Broadway. Ever, I think overall
- 47:00Speaker 2: it's now the fifth longest running. Now I need Cats
- 47:03Speaker 2: the Jellicle Ball to be the fifth longest running musical
- 47:07Speaker 2: on Broadway.
- 47:07Speaker 1: I want to know, Okay, of these crazy cat names,
- 47:11Speaker 1: which is the one you would pick as your chosen name? Okay, Okay,
- 47:15Speaker 1: Grizabella Macavity, gus Us, rum Tum Tugger, Magical Mister Mastopheles,
- 47:22Speaker 1: DJ Griddlebone, munk A Strap, Mungo, Jerry, Rumble Teaser, Jenny
- 47:26Speaker 1: Enny Dots, Bustiver Jones, Victoria, Bamballarina, Demeter, Cassandra and Skimble Shanks,
- 47:31Speaker 1: tumble of Brutus, et Cetera, syllabub or jelly Orium. Which
- 47:36Speaker 1: one are you picking? What's your chosen name? Which one
- 47:38Speaker 1: are you putting down on that intake form at callim lord?
- 47:41Speaker 2: This is so tough because in a lineage of transgender,
- 47:48Speaker 2: transfeminine names, Cassandra or Demeitter are par for the course.
- 47:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we all know them.
- 47:55Speaker 2: We all know, and we all know of Victoria.
- 47:58Speaker 1: Let me tell you that we literally know Victoria.
- 48:00Speaker 2: We literally know Victoria. But for me myself, I do
- 48:06Speaker 2: kind of think like the magical mix Mestopheles would be cute,
- 48:11Speaker 2: but ultimately I must pick et Cetera. It's that is
- 48:17Speaker 2: such a fairy name, et cetera. It's such a god.
- 48:23Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure I've met a fairy named et Cetera
- 48:28Speaker 1: in the Poconos with me this weekend.
- 48:30Speaker 2: Oh yeah, it's giving a hancho I think.
- 48:32Speaker 1: I would go with I really like Mungo Jerry as
- 48:37Speaker 1: a name, but it's kind of giving boy a little
- 48:39Speaker 1: bit well.
- 48:41Speaker 2: Jerry Jerry Spice girls.
- 48:44Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, but I think I would probably go griddle
- 48:48Speaker 1: Bombbamball Arena. I really like and Jenny Anny Dots.
- 48:55Speaker 2: Jenny Anny Dots is et cetera in the original or
- 48:59Speaker 2: is that an an a new character?
- 49:01Speaker 1: I don't know, etcetera. I don't know. That's the thing
- 49:05Speaker 1: is like, I've never been a Cat's girl, like Andrelaid
- 49:10Speaker 1: Weber's musicals. Like we all know, anyone who listened to
- 49:14Speaker 1: this podcast knows I'm a phantom diva down. You know, Cats,
- 49:20Speaker 1: kind of similarly to Rent, was like one of those
- 49:23Speaker 1: shows that, like, I was very aware of. I knew
- 49:25Speaker 1: the music, I like saw. I had never seen a
- 49:29Speaker 1: stage production of Cats before we saw the Jellica Ball.
- 49:32Speaker 1: I had only seen, you know, the pro shot and
- 49:34Speaker 1: the movie. But you know, it was very I'm very
- 49:40Speaker 1: happy that this was the first actual production of it
- 49:43Speaker 1: I've ever seen, because honestly, nothing'll ever nothing, we'll ever
- 49:46Speaker 1: top it.
- 49:47Speaker 2: No, go see Cats the Jelly Cale Ball on Broadway
- 49:50Speaker 2: right now.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Get your tickets, now, get your tickets now, they're probably
- 49:53Speaker 1: a lot more expensive now post Tony nomination. They're probably
- 49:57Speaker 1: a lot more expensive now post like a Virgin official room.
- 50:00Speaker 1: Right right, that's so teat cat. But I think that's
- 50:08Speaker 1: where we'll wrap it for today. But we will return.
