- :04 [Music] [Applause] 0:14 [Music] 0:25 hello and welcome to the final episode of ZX flicks the Ed zck podcast 0:34 this is the wrap-up Show You could argue it's the first time I've actually done a solo show I think in all my podcasting 0:41 years as the amazing podcaster that I am I've usually always had a co-host on I very rarely if ever have really flown 0:48 solo I've done a couple little I guess I've done a couple little shows here and there by myself it's more of a commentary type episodes but definitely 0:56 for this podcast this is the first time I've run solo and I really admire those fellow podcasters that I've podcast with 1:03 such as Katie for her retrade podcast and Craig at times for his theala 1:09 podcast that he's doing hearing them fly solo it's always admirable to hear them do it because they do a great job on 1:16 their own and I don't know if I like the sound of my own voice I don't know if you guys like the sound of my voice but 1:21 bear with me because today is actually going to be I think it's going to be a fun little exercise a fun little show uh 1:27 we're going to talk about where this podcast is going so if you're listening to this right now do not delete the feed 1:33 because shortly after this episode drops there is going to be a title change to 1:39 the podcast it is now forever going to be known as the director's chair Network 1:45 how do you like them apples that's right the director's chair Network I thought this was just a simple title just 1:52 indicate that yes the classic chair that the director sits in to call Action and 1:57 I don't know I think there's just nothing more yeah wonderfully cliche 2:02 than the director's chair the spot where the director sits it's used in movies that we see in TV shows and pictures but 2:10 yeah the chair of the director the director's chair Network what it's going to basically entail is yeah every season 2:17 will have its own director so season one was Edwards Wick season two yeah we have 2:23 fellow Craig Cohan of the goat podcast the Brian to Palmer coverage his show 2:28 will be season two and season 3 will be me again with 2:33 Michael man and at the time of this recording I'm recording that episode tomorrow at the time of this recording 2:40 so quick changes to this network so I'm really excited to be doing that we'll be uh doing Michael man's debut film 2:48 Thief yeah so stick around folks if you want to hear the Michael man coverage 2:53 and Brian to Palma coverage so I'm excited for those changes because the one thing I learned 3:01 or enjoyed about doing this podcast Journey with aswick it's just how much I enjoy films in general especially this 3:08 era of filmography and the when I was really big into films Teenage life to 3:13 early adulthood and it just reminded me again of why I like film so much and I 3:19 just finished watching Michael man's thief and that same feeling came back to me's like man I love these films this era of films nothing to say about 3:26 today's films not at all cuz Michael man and even edwick as late as 2018 they 3:31 were making films and great films I think it's nice to sometimes watch films aren't always comic book films or 3:38 whatever or I don't know nothing against those films but I like these Standalone Stories the good old Standalone 3:46 stories so what we're doing today is we are going to rank we me I'm going to rank the 3:53 films of edwick and I'm going to do that for the end of each each season as well and let me know via comments email 4:00 if my ranking system was bunk if you totally disagree and that's fine it look 4:05 it's all subjective there is no objective how can you be objective it's art and stories speak to you for 4:11 different reasons in different ways and I almost hesitated doing uh ranking list of sorts because 4:19 it can I don't know I feel like because maybe something's last it doesn't mean it's 4:26 not good all right so we are going to rank EDS Wick's 13 films why do I keep saying we I'm so used to having a 4:33 co-host I'm going to do this maybe we the audience so let me know if you agree with the rankings but before we get to 4:39 the rankings I thought it' be fun to let you guys know how each movie did at the box office we touched on that but you 4:46 probably forget I certainly forget I wouldn't be able to list all the films in order so we're going to go from least 4:51 box office to greatest let me know what you think was the greatest box office or least box 4:58 office film of career and I did adjust for inflation the reason why I do this is important 5:05 because if a movie ticket cost a dollar obviously you know say 50 years ago and 5:10 it sold a million tickets it's going to be a million dollars to the box office right that's not fair if now inflation 5:17 is tickets cost $15 right so that's what I did I made sure that the number kind of represents ticket sold if that makes 5:24 sense so that's why I think inflation is important to adjust for if this movie sold the same amount of tickets in 5:31 2025 what would its box office be strap in folks this is very 5:37 exciting at number 13 we have trial by fire not really a big surprise there I 5:43 it almost makes me feel sad and bad that Ed's last film and I'm not GNA say what 5:49 I feel about just right now this isn't what this part's about because we're going to get into the ranking but yeah 5:54 it is a little sad that his last film was his least successful film at the box office 6:00 $185,000 only so I guess that limited screen run did not produce the box 6:07 office shot in the arm that was needed to have a wider release as my guess at 6:12 number 12 we have leaving normal coming in with $3.5 million at the box 6:19 office yeah that's little low it came out in competition with them Louise and 6:26 I remember we talked about it when we read the audio book I believe that I just whimpered at the box office Ed 6:32 blame bad timing in the news Rodney King stuff and Allie riots and I don't know 6:38 not that Ed's making excuses but maybe this just did not resonate with audiences 6:44 then and number 11 we have Pon sacrifice with a $75 6:52 million at the box office again I shouldn't be too surprised by that it's a chess movie 6:58 right that did start to Toby mcgu I would say half of that draw was probably Toby fans at the very least all right 7:05 now we're going to the top 10 now this is very surprising to me number 10 I was 7:10 surprised and this is adjusted for inflation I find this very surprising because it's my understanding this film 7:15 was both loved by critics and by audiences but maybe it found 7:21 life at the DVD rentals and buying Glory 1989 is 7:29 Glory 67.8 million again Glory I'm surprised coming at number nine Defiance 7:36 with 76 million I wonder why that one didn't do 7:42 that great again not bad not great 76 million and I suspect that Daniel Craig 7:49 being in that film probably helped it out a little bit and number eight we have about last night look at that his 7:57 first film 107 million and the turnaround or the profit in that film was pretty high which probably 8:03 allowed Ed to get Glory so about last night maybe good timing 86 film romantic 8:12 comedy drama dramedy healthy 107 million 8:17 coming at 148 million was Love and Other Drugs again not too surprising we have 8:23 Jake ghal and Anne Hathaway very strong actors in their own right Young 8:30 good-looking good date movie 148 million now we're into the 200 million 8:36 Mark area we have Jack reachers never go back 2016 Tom Cruz vehicle goes well 8:44 saying Tom Cruz very rarely does he have a box office bomb just his name alone even today is pretty Marquee name that 8:52 probably drove a lot of the box office it wasn't quite the Hope or the 8:57 draw that they wanted box office wise because we never got a third film 1996's courage Under Fire is next 9:05 with 218 million that's strong very strong and this one surprised me The 9:12 Siege did better than courage Under Fire at 240 million now we're going to the last 9:19 three no surprises here at 276 million we have blood diamond that movie did very well when 9:26 Doug and I talked about this when we did the show and we'll get into our breakdown but surprised it did this well to some degree because it is such a hard 9:32 watch so I don't think this film was a repeat viewing film I don't think people went back necessarily to watch it again in the theaters the draw of Leo DiCaprio 9:39 was probably a big part of it just looked like an exciting film heavy on the drama I would say action but there 9:46 was just obviously a lot of tense action moments throughout the film and at number two Legends of the Fall with 361 9:55 million not too shabby for a movie about a guy on a horse and a 10:02 bear lastly doubling Legends of the Fall by far zwick's biggest film 10:09 success was nearing I mean we're talking nearing the $800 million box office Mark 10:15 if it came out today with the tickets prices of today and it sold what it sold today this would be considered a huge 10:21 success so would Legends of the Fall at 360 quite frankly or blood diamond even today's standards of film box office The 10:27 Last Samurai Nearing $800 million at the box office wow okay so you go I hope you 10:35 guys enjoyed the little bit of a journey there of where films fell into the box office Journey Justice for inflation for 10:40 ticket sales now we're getting to the nitty-gritty now we're getting to the fun part you could say we're gonna have 10:46 Ryan's oh Ryan's rankings that's has a nice ring to it doesn't it here is how I 10:52 rank these films this probably doesn't come as any surprise but at number 13 we have Pawn 10:58 sacrifice the chess movie not a bad idea of a film 11:05 or a bad idea for a character of a film Craig and I talked about this and we both agreed that the last two minutes of 11:12 this film where we got the what do you call the epilog stating where Bobby 11:18 fiser had gone with his life how he went off the grid and all these conspiratorial 11:24 stuff that should have been the film the film should have started with his final match 11:29 with his opponent the Russian opponent and then go into his after when 11:35 he went really mentally Rogue as you could say when his brain went chess 11:40 crazy because you can see even in this movie poster you're watching this on YouTube you've got the image of the chess pieces the game squares flying out 11:48 of Bobby Fischer's mind to indicate that he's losing his mind because of Chess 11:53 and everything else that you know to be a genius in some way he's losing his mind ironically by being that genius 12:00 that would have been the better film but yeah this comes in last I and of the films with my 12:06 ranking I think Pawn sacrifice truly was a film where it was a bit of a SLO to 12:13 get through and I hate that because Ed even with some of his other R I think for almost the next 12 12:21 films weren't slogs to get through and now I have to rank them and there's reasons why I put them where I put them 12:26 it doesn't make them necessarily bad films but I would give Pawn sacrifice we didn't give them letter grades it is my 12:32 last movie we said it throughout the episode yeah it just it was boring it 12:39 was boring well acted Lea Shriver did a great job in his role I almost wish I had more of him I think the character 12:45 that Toby played and the way he played it was a combination of Toby's acting which I know he's a good actor but his 12:52 acting of Bobby Fisher just was it was a slog and not a great watch but I thank 12:57 Craig for joining me for that at number 12 we have leing normal now 13:02 again don't get mad at me leing normal was an adorable fun film all these films 13:08 I enjoyed I I think Pawn sacrifice oh I hate to say but it might be legit the one film of his 13 that I don't know if 13:14 I necessarily even enjoyed I'm glad I watched it look at me I'm trying to be an apologist here but not every film by 13:20 every director is going to be amazing but Ed has a pretty good record of just enjoyable films right and leing normal 13:26 was a fun film it was perfectly enjoyable and in fact it was more enjoyable than I anticipated when I saw 13:31 that he did this his filmography I never really heard of it looks like most of the public hasn't really heard of it but 13:36 it was a completely enjoyable fun film I don't think I have any real desire to go 13:42 back and watch it I think for the rest of this list folks it's going to be a combination of maybe what were my expectations were they even met or was 13:49 it higher then so this is a situation where my expectations were low but I found myself quite enjoying it but then 13:54 what is my kind of spiritual connection how do I identify with this film and I do admit you two 13:59 lovely women seeking healing and adventure with themselves yeah I well 14:06 done I didn't identify with their Journey like in the sense of I didn't find myself in with them on the journey 14:11 but I enjoyed watching their Journey it was very well acted by mag Tilly and Christin ly and it was a fun film and it 14:17 was fun to see Ed tackle this type of film I believe I remember correctly this 14:23 did come after Glory so it's an interesting film after Glory so number 12 leaving normal 14:30 and number 11 we have the 2010 movie Love and Other Drugs and I knew Ed had 14:37 done this film for years it came out in 2010 and I remember when this film came out and edwick had directed it I 14:44 remember just by the movie poster this was different than his previous outings with blood diamond stuff like that so I 14:50 knew this was a different film but I never just got around to watching it I'm trying to remember yeah I can remember what's going on in my life I I don't 14:56 mind saying at in 2010 I was going through a divorce and I started dating my obviously my current wife Becky and 15:01 everything's fine but it's just a tumultuous time of my life 20091 so films in that area I just probably had 15:07 other things on my mind than watching Love and Other Drugs so then as the years go on you just there's just certain movies as years go on you're 15:13 like I'll get to it I get to it I'm glad I did I'm glad I got to it it ranks just a little bit higher than leing normal 15:18 because there's I think there's more oomph in this movie I think I enjoyed watching Jake a lot and that's the thing so I think for this movie to rank a 15:24 little higher than leave normal uh Jake is incredible actor I really like is acting so I don't think I've ever 15:30 watched again a movie that Jake has been in where I'm like oh my gosh this is a SLO or this is boring he just has some 15:37 so much Charisma he was great to look at yes guys I can say that too about men he was great to look at and he was a great 15:43 Charisma and which brings us to an hathway I said during that episode with Kaylee thank you Kaylee for joining me 15:48 on that episode she's just not my favorite actress just something about her I don't 15:54 know what it is it's just a sense I get with her I could be totally wrong I just don't 16:01 see myself thinking she's I don't know it's weird I it's just some celebrities 16:08 they're all public figures right hey look there's probably people who listen to me who probably don't think I'm that great so it's just how we feel about 16:16 certain personalities or people and it does come through even under their acting I know my many time co-host Katie 16:23 she feels that way about Nicholas Cage for some reason and that might be blasphemy for a lot of you listeners but there you go she just does not like like 16:29 Nicholas Cage does she have any reason not to like I don't know it's just a feeling that people get and sometimes you just can't shake it so for me it was 16:36 an hathway in this film I would be very interested to see a different actress in 16:41 this role how much I would have enjoyed the film like I'm talking like everything's the same but it's a different actress acting the parts and 16:47 if I got to pick my own actress I'd have to figure out who would I want to see naked many times throughout the film because yes you get to see an halfway 16:54 naked a lot and no complaints there I'm just saying yeah if you are interested in seeing the naked an hathway Love and 17:00 Other Drugs is your film at number 10 we have courage Under Fire I had 17:08 Jared with me for that one thank you Jared for joining me on that episode of the three Denzel films this one ranks a 17:14 lowest for me not for Denzel Denzel like Jake do you ever watch a Denzel film and 17:19 think oh boy boy Denzel Denzel brings it every role in a movie with some strong 17:25 acting and some interesting storyline I would say Denzel was the best the highlight of that film and I only wish 17:32 Ed and Denzel did a fourth film together I don't think any of us would have complained had they done more films together and we get to watch more Denzel 17:39 who doesn't love Denzel and I know this sounds terrible because I just finished ragging on the last film with an hathway 17:46 being the weakest link and unfortunately that was a big problem I had with courage on fire was mag Ryan this is a 17:53 situation where you have she's the mystery of the film her intentions and the firing and her getting shot and all 17:59 that mystery stuff and what really happened in that raid or that incursion in the Middle East she looked great see 18:08 she looked the part in a sense like she looked AP part if you just to see you look at the movie poster looks great mag Ryan over Denzel's shoulder she's got 18:15 red hair she's got that fiery attitude you can see in the poster but the delivery it just seemed off it just 18:22 again we said it during that podcast episode I wish me Ryan would just be Meg Ryan she had this southern thing and 18:28 redit fiery redhead attitude that just didn't translate in the acting shops like well she just spoke normal her 18:33 normal you know what I mean she left normal okay so that being said courage Under Fire still top 10 number 10 um it 18:41 was a tough one to put it there but this film and I also I have a hard time watching Matt Damon being so thin I just 18:48 have a hard time with that people really getting into their acting where they lose that kind of weight uh speaking of 18:53 Christian Bale and The Machinist I believe it's called The Machinist I will never watch that film I've seen the photo of him 18:59 obviously 100 pounds or whatever he is it's hard to watch people essentially abuse their bodies essentially it's just 19:06 it's tough to watch I know that's what they're doing but I have a tough time because I'm trying to just watch a movie 19:11 and have fun I I don't need to be challenged that much I don't need my film to be challenging so much where it's hard for me to watch I know there's 19:17 tough subjects and tough things to go through but but yeah Kur of fire is also one of those films too 19:23 where once you know what really happened the mystery of it all the interview process that Denzel goes through you 19:30 lose the the what happened goes away and so the repeat reviewing of this goes 19:35 down a little bit so when I watched it for the podcast it had been a while so it was good to watch it again but I 19:41 think it might have to be another 20 years before I watch it again I remember everything that's happened so the mystery part's gone and then the replay 19:48 value kind of goes away and there's no real oomph in this until sort of the very end but yeah all right number 19:55 nine we have Daniel Craig into Defiance andless people get mad at me 20:01 number nine look we're getting to the point now there's only nine more films and these are all great films we're getting to that part of the filmography 20:07 now where they're just they're all really strong films ranking them is in a question of because it's number nine 20:13 number eight is that much better and so forth It's not really till the maybe the top three where or top four where we get 20:18 to the level of a level films but defin was a really good film and I watched it for the first time for this podcast I'd 20:25 like to thank my uh co-host Scott coming on for that review 20:30 and Daniel Craig was great in it I didn't even know it was a true story till I started watching it it was really 20:35 fascinating film on on these brothers LIF shriber again doing a great job in this 20:40 film this film I definitely recommend everyone to watch all these films essentially but if you haven't seen Defiance give it a chance it is a really 20:47 good film This falls into the repeat watching I don't know if it has again that oomph to watch it over and over 20:54 again some of like my higher films that I've done throughout the years but it is a very very well-crafted very well-acted 21:00 film once you just know the story of the brothers and the survival and what they went through I don't know if repeat 21:06 viewing would do much for me but I'm glad I saw it it belongs in the top 10 well belongs in the top nine I think 21:12 also it was almost what I expected part of my criteria here is what do I expect from this film I did have high expectations for a film like this 21:19 dealing with this subject matter knowing Ed was edwick ability to film War scenes 21:25 and to deal with this tough subject and he did it so he met expectations it didn't exceed those expectations but 21:31 they were met I guess it lacked a little bit of the emotional oomph of some of his other War 21:36 films and number eight L you think I'm just like shiding all over anything that has to do with like romantic comedy or 21:44 all that good stuff we have the amazing about last night his debut film who I had Katie on as my co-host who helped me 21:51 debut this season of the director's chair you like that network but also of edwick filmography 21:59 uh yeah this is a combination of a film that I did not have expectations for so 22:05 they I want say they were low but they were pretty low in the sense like sure it's a romantic or dramedy of adults 22:11 young adults finding love but the acting of Demi and Rob low and even Jim blushi 22:18 all fantastic Elizabeth Perkins was great the Great Central cast I love the story I thought everyone did great it 22:25 was adult it was um well acted did great dialogue it was an ' 80s film without 22:31 feeling like an ' 80s film in that sense it didn't have no offense to some of those ' 80s films it it ages very well 22:37 minus of course some of the Styles and stuff like that but you get what I'm saying I I I miss these type of films 22:42 and a lot of dialogue just dialogue heavy great back and forth and yeah it's 22:49 great to see a young Rob low and Dey Moore doing some great acting that you 22:54 forget sometimes I think some of these earlier roles from these well-known actors and what they really brought to 23:00 the table back in their hungrier days of acting so this movie ranks a little higher for me because I had no 23:06 expectations of this film they were exceeded more than I thought I was going to enjoy the film so ranks a little bit 23:12 higher and it's one I definitely watch again for sure number seven yes I can 23:17 hear my co-host Katie yelling at me oh Ryan how could you have Tom Cruz's Jack reach and Nal back beat about last night 23:24 I can tell you hell because I'm a guy no I'm just kidding maybe a little bit but 23:29 uh I I enjoyed this film I look I'm a Tom Cruz fan I've said it before I've said 100 times I am a Tom Cruz fan so 23:36 having him on film he is an easy rewatchability for me I've seen a lot of his films more than once Jack Reacher 23:42 I'd only seen the one time then watch it again for this podcast Journey but this is a film I could easily watch again and 23:49 I had a great time I guess it's also for memories for me watch it with my son oh my kids now but my one son who's 10 23:55 years old who's a big Tom Cruz fanatic and it was fun watching it with with him so I admit it goes up a little bit higher for me just the replayability it 24:02 has with my family the Jack Reacher character is cool there's a great argument I understand regarding Tom's 24:08 height I didn't realize the public was such he highst I didn't know we're allowed to make fun or criticize 24:14 people's height but I guess we can so uh Tom Cruz is too short to play Jack Creer right I love how other topics in the 24:21 Hollywood regarding other factors of the human body are often debated height seems to be one that people can be 24:27 height us and never be criticized for being that way uh but the point is I think Tom Cruz did a great job 24:33 channeling the uh Jack Reacher personality and fighting skills Colby smolders was great in it she was fine in 24:40 it Craig thought that she maybe lacked the level that Tom brings to the table so Tom had to bring his acting down a 24:46 little bit I I can see that but uh I just wish this film had done better of 24:52 course because I think everyone that enjoyed this film of course would have loved to seen another adventure of Jack 24:57 Reacher in the gang but also mentioned that we're getting that anyways with the long running and not in a bad way eight 25:03 film series whatever it is of Mission Impossible which are just high octane incredible stunt sets but the 25:09 interesting thing is regarding Ethan Hunt in Mission imposs play by Tom Cruz not a very deep character it's just 25:16 a platform for Tom and rightfully so to Showcase his incredible stunt work again stunt pieces and action sequence it's 25:23 they're great action films and they're intelligent action films too mind you however the character of Ethan Hunt 25:29 isn't really that deep but ironically Jack Reacher is a more of a deeper character and personality that you 25:34 actually really enjoy seeing him in certain situations so the set pieces aren't as Grand as the mission possible 25:40 films but the Jack Reacher character is actually a much more in interesting character so yeah it's too bad we didn't 25:46 get more Jack Reacher all right number six maybe higher on the list of people would 25:52 think 2018 Ed's last film maybe forever 25:58 trial by fire with my co-host Doug at the time Doug actually reached out to me after the uh podcast dropped he goes boy 26:05 that was probably the best one we ever did and I admit it was a fascinating discussion and the reason why it's so high on my list maybe not necessar for 26:12 the replay value I admit but the reason why it's so high on my list is because of the emotional impact it had for both 26:19 me and Doug was how much it made us think and that's really important for art as well 26:24 so yes Jack Reacher doesn't necessarily make you think that type film it's fun to watch but the reason why I like trial 26:31 by fire is because it challenged my own preconceived notions regarding the death penalty it made me reconsider some 26:36 previous thoughts I had on it to the point where it did change my mind on things and that's a powerful thing when 26:42 art can do that when a movie can do that so this has to rank higher for me for that reason for what it did to me now 26:50 replay value I probably won't watch it again but what I did was I researched 26:55 things I looked into things I went to interviews like it spawned so much from 27:01 the film that it deserved to be in the top 10 right in the middle of the pack there number six a great acting by Laura 27:07 Duran and Jack Jack oconnell that's the other thing it made me want to see more of those individuals of their films so 27:13 it did all the things that a film should do it uh made you think challenge your preconceived notions and actually change 27:19 them sometimes people just watch what they want to watch they don't want to be challenged and preconceived things and it was done very well and it's a 27:26 bittersweet because it's a great final film if this is Ed's final film like I said he's in his 70s we have to retire 27:32 at some point and if this is his final film there's nothing to be ashamed of with this film it did not do well at the 27:38 box office but don't let that discourage you or dissuade you from watching this 27:43 film dear listeners if you haven't already please I beg you to watch trial by fire give it the love it deserves 27:49 trial by fire number six number five we have the 27:54 siege yeah I know this I admit this is Maybe higher than for some of you again 28:00 it depends on what your kind of films are if you're a romantic comedy person and those type of films yeah you're loving other drugs and about last night 28:07 and leaving normal they'll be higher but for me yeah I admit I'm a guy adrenaline junkie blah blah blah no I like this 28:14 film because it's combination of action set pieces it deals with a time in our world's history before 911 ironically 28:21 but definitely it was in the air cuz this was 1998 when this came out so this is Nostalgia we're getting to that part 28:27 of the list where the Nostalgia plays a big role for me in Ed Ed's films so I saw this in '98 I was 23 at the time so 28:36 I was definitely kneed deep in the love of edwick and his films that he was releasing in those types of films in the 28:41 90s has Denzel Czech it has Bruce which I'm a big fan of course in the 90s and 28:47 80s and 90s it just it was so cool to see Bruce play the character that he played had some dark moments in it it 28:52 had some Intrigue it had some mystery some action sequence and it had the lovely yeah I have a Crush onette Bening 28:59 as an actress as a person I've always enjoyed her I think she's just adorable pretty powerful strong actress seen her 29:05 in this film too mixing up with Bruce and Denzel is really great so yeah this hits all the spots for me as for 29:11 Nostalgia and then for repeat viewing I think it's a great film I think it's filmed well it looks good and I think 29:17 the U maligning that Bruce got I don't it's just people I think he did great I think he did fine as the general I think 29:23 he played the role well was he the strongest of the three no it was Denzel andette then Bruce but still great film 29:29 I enjoyed it it it is number five for me and thank you to Scott who joined me 29:35 on that episode number four we have the amazing Blood Diamond thank you Doug for 29:42 joining me on this uh episode of Blood Diamond boy this was a rough watch I 29:49 hadn't seen it since it came out in 06 or around that time and that's probably why and we mentioned that of course 29:54 during that episode this was a tough watch but it was so darn good uh I am a 30:00 huge Leo fan I love his films I love his acting in films I should say I think he's an incredible actor he has 30:06 proclivity for younger gals legal mind you but younger and that can sometimes smear people and I get it I understand 30:11 people's personalities will affect their art or people's enjoyment of that art but that being said I love him as an 30:18 actor I think he's an incredible actor and he really does a great job in this movie uh with his accent he carries it 30:24 throughout the film his death scene at the end swirl alert is so well done and this is such a great move of course the 30:31 message about blood diamond industry and actually this is another film since this film came out I have never bought a 30:36 diamond that's right I'll never I'll never buy a diamond no even if it was like a multi-millionaire type thing I 30:42 don't think I'd buy diamonds knowing what unless you can really guarantee this did not come from the the blood diamond mining tactics but it just also 30:50 goes to show you the greed that we as humans so what we do as humans the whole idea of what what we're willing to 30:55 sacrifice in humanity for something that sparked uh this is a powerful message by Ed that 31:01 he portrays in this film not necessarily a true story but these are true stories on how Diamond's come to be in the 31:08 world all great actors in This film great job by the cast and crew 31:14 incredible child actors in This film as well that we talked about j hansu i I'm 31:19 probably butchering his name and I apologize I'm do the top my head of course Jennifer Connelly the lovely beautiful amazing talented Jennifer 31:25 Connelly another great actress that I can watch her and anything and she's always fantastic she was incredible actress and yeah Blood Diamond at number 31:34 four number three we're getting down to folks who gets bronze medal who gets 31:39 bronze medal Tom Cruz gets the bronze medal for The Last Samurai and I can understand why this was Ed Wick's number 31:46 one box office movie it had everything it's as sleeping epic as Tom Cruz big box office draw especially in 2003 31:53 probably 22 years ago already um the score the acting everything about this 31:59 film is just amazing I totally get why it's number one in the box office but it's number three for me this is 32:05 incredible film check out that conversation if you haven't already with myself and Craig we love this film The 32:12 set pieces the designs the costumes the acting everything about this film was amazing totally get why it was the 32:18 number one and it's number three for me did I mention it was a good film yet did I mention that yet yeah this is just a 32:23 great film and what I think people misunderstood about this film people thought this film was white watching that they thought Tom Cruz was The Last 32:30 Samurai and and I get it you look at the poster it's him it says The Last Samurai you must think oh it's Tom Cruz but no 32:37 it's not him he is not the last yeah he is amongst the samurai as we know it's Ken watab who is 32:44 The Last Samurai but yeah it's a beautiful film incredible number three 32:50 Last Samurai all right guys this is it we're getting to the number two number one now of course when I mention number 32:55 two you're going to who know who number one is and and I'll give you my reasons this was was tough to objectively State 33:01 what was my number two versus my number one and the reasons why but boy it was close and people's opinions will differ 33:09 I understand that so coming in queue in the drop of a drum roll 33:14 sound which I will not do because I just my life is busy I can't do that silly sound effects for everything but in your 33:20 mind's eye drum roll please for number two we have Glory that's right Glory 33:28 ah just hearing the musical score in my head right now makes me want to cry I had a great time with Doug on this you 33:33 think two manly men okay one manly men me no Doug I'm not the man yeah this 33:38 movie makes us both cry like blubbering idiots I love this film true story the courage of the first black regimen to 33:44 fight in the Civil War everything about this film is just amazing the set pieces the acting even Matthew brck with 33:50 Matthew brck he did a great job of the film despite the behind the- scenes drama it made for a fun podcast discussion but on screen Matthew did a 33:58 great job of course Denzel won an Academy Award we have Morgan Freeman car ules this is just an incredible film 34:04 totally deserves to be in the top two I know some of you who listening think Ryan this has to be number one hey 34:09 there's a lot of great arguments especially for me this was the film it was Glory that got me on the Ed Ed train it was this film who made this film Ed 34:16 zwick who is this guy so this is definitely my gateway drug into the Ed filmography that's why it ranks so high 34:23 it is number two It's just tough I had to choose between this and number one I'm like which film put a gun to my head 34:29 would I watch over and over again again this is a incredible film and I'll give my reasons why number one beats out just 34:36 by a smidgen and the soundtrack of this film is amazing the acting is amazing the story of this first black regiment 34:42 fighting for their freedom it's it's all there folks it's just an amazing amazing movie but we're gonna have to get into 34:49 number one why number one did win for my top film by edwick obviously if you're tracking I'm 34:57 sure you haven't Legends of the Fall 1994 couple reasons like I said Glory 35:03 was hey I was one of those people Glory who got it on DVD I didn't see it in the theater so I admit I didn't add to the box office draw I think Glory helped 35:12 Legends of the Fall become the box office success it was as well because even back then Brad Pit wasn't Brad Pit 35:18 at the time does that make sense like he wasn't the Brad think this film Word of Mouth gets around who's this hunk of a guy so there wasn't a lot of big names 35:25 on this film at the time really like box off draw Incredible actors but nobody on this movie is like I'm going to this 35:31 film because of Brad Pit I'm going to this film because Anthony Hopkins Aiden Quinn I'm sure people maybe but you get 35:38 what I'm saying Tom Cruz we get it they went for Tom Cruz Last Samurai we get that and the sweeping epic that it was 35:43 this one's another sweeping epic and I think Word of Mouth got around too as this film continued to the box office but I actually saw this film because of 35:51 edwick now so that's why it ranks number one for me a little bit Glory was a m not a mistake it was an accident it was 35:57 a happy accident soon right like I watch Glory because I like war movies I enjoy I've always enjoyed war movies where the 36:03 Civil War Vietnam War World War II I I love a war story so Glory was definitely that and I 36:10 didn't realize until I watched it just how emotional made me even as a young teenager I was emotional but Legends of 36:15 the Fall was the first film I saw in the theaters because of edwick Glory so I went to the theaters say oh he's 36:21 tackling this film cool cuz I remember seeing this trailer in the theater I can't remember for what film but I saw 36:28 the trailer for Legends of the Fall in the theater and I was like holy smokes the soundtrack that whistling soundtrack 36:35 and the horse riding and the narration everything about this film in that trailer and then it said like from the 36:42 director of glory and I'm like okay I'm done I'm going and this film has it all too it chokes you up the drama between 36:49 the brothers that's the other thing I have I have three brothers in this film there's two brothers or three brothers in total but I have I'm one of four but 36:56 so the drama the brothers and the love of a woman and I I get it Julie Arman is gorgeous and she's great in this film 37:03 strong female lead and just the the tragedy and the drama and the Heartbreak 37:08 and just everything about this film it's everything I love in a sweeping epic heavy drama incredible score when Henry 37:15 Thomas starts playing at the piano at the very beginning I talked about in the podcast when he starts singing that song 37:21 it's that score it's his score it's interesting the character score but he's singing that song when he dies and 37:26 Tristan played by Brad pit runs to him no it's just like guys this film has it all it has like ships it has the ocean a 37:33 war horses it's an insane film it's one of my favorite films of all time that's 37:39 a discussion for another day what is Ryan's top five films that this would be in the top five yeah fantastic film go 37:47 listen to the episode we spent a long time with Katie and myself we spent a long time talking about how much we loved that and yes we have Brad Pit's 37:53 glowing locks blonde hair okay folks thank you for joining me on this season 38:00 of zwix flick the edwick podcast this is the final episode of said podcast I have decided and we are going to move on to 38:06 the director's chair Network so zuk flick is season one Brian De Palma 38:11 hosted by Craig Cohen will be season two on your feeds and season three starting very shortly season three will be so two 38:19 and three will be like they'll be going together right you'll get the feed as you get the feed but you get the point they're going to be alternating episodes 38:25 but the idea is that season 2 if you have a some podcasts have a 38:31 chapter or season like organizers right but anyways season three will be Michael 38:36 man's films I have a lot of guest co-hosts lined up for season three the Michael man season my second season of a 38:43 director the first episode Thief starring James con will be myself and Kaye Kaylee as you'll remember the 38:49 lovely Kaylee she was with me for the movie Love and Other Drugs she's returning to do Thief that's the film 38:55 she chose and like I said I have some new co-hosts that weren't on the first season coming on for the second SE 39:00 second season but I've already confirmed Katie Craig and Doug they're coming back as well so stand by for that yeah I just 39:07 want to say thanks to Ed zwick for giving us some incredible filmography for his hard work behind and on the 39:13 director's chair thank you everyone who's joined me for this journey I hope you'll stick 39:19 around for uh my journey with Michael man so do not change the dial is what 39:24 I'm saying if you're on this feed if it hasn't happened already it's going to be called the director's chair Network and 39:31 you will see that change in a different thumbnail all that good stuff so don't panic that's why the change so it just 39:38 depends when you've listened to this yeah okay thank you so much 40:02 [Music]
