Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of Eating Wall Broke. I'm your host,
- 0:03Speaker 1: Colleen Witt, and today we have one of the top
- 0:06Speaker 1: funniest people in Los Angeles, the original bad girl of comedy,
- 0:11Speaker 1: comedian and actress Lunel is in our kitchen today. That's me.
- 0:15Speaker 1: And I take issue with that top people to watch
- 0:19Speaker 1: comedians in Los Angeles. I prefer to say under the
- 0:23Speaker 1: top people to watch in the country. I agree with that.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I agree with that in the country. Play that back now.
- 0:34Speaker 1: It's a good do you have us eating today? All right?
- 0:36Speaker 1: So when I was young, sometimes on Friday nights, you know,
- 0:40Speaker 1: Black people like the fish on Friday nights with sometime
- 0:43Speaker 1: we didn't. And an old tradition in my house, and
- 0:46Speaker 1: I think it's an American thing. It's a good old
- 0:49Speaker 1: regular sloppy Joe for you newly web to lyd and
- 0:52Speaker 1: said you could cook and you can't. If you could
- 0:55Speaker 1: just do this, that will make them happy. Ingredients are
- 0:58Speaker 1: very simple. We have the lean ground meat right here
- 1:01Speaker 1: or not so lean, because you know, you really need
- 1:03Speaker 1: a little something to keep the meat from sticking to
- 1:05Speaker 1: the pant or a good non stick pan, which is
- 1:07Speaker 1: what I think we got ready here and then I
- 1:09Speaker 1: have some uh, sloppy Joe sauce, which if you really
- 1:13Speaker 1: on a budget, you can use edge aloud of sauce whatever,
- 1:15Speaker 1: but I thought you could use you can use if
- 1:19Speaker 1: you really broke broke. If you broke broke, so then um,
- 1:23Speaker 1: this is also the sloppy Joe how to mix, which
- 1:26Speaker 1: you usually use one or the other. Um, I'm gonna
- 1:30Speaker 1: use the liquid sauce they on my add a little
- 1:32Speaker 1: powder for look, okay for actually kick and if we
- 1:36Speaker 1: were really not stressed for time, I would toast those bunts.
- 1:39Speaker 1: But that's been very bougee because regular trailer parkway is
- 1:43Speaker 1: just to eat the sloppy Joe on the white bunt.
- 1:45Speaker 1: So that's what we're gonna do. I'm gonna tell you
- 1:47Speaker 1: right now that when I saw you we're gonna do
- 1:50Speaker 1: sloppy Joe, I immediately smiled like it's an old school classic.
- 1:55Speaker 1: All right, it's a lot of storry people who forgot
- 1:57Speaker 1: about the sloppy or well, you can go ahead and
- 2:01Speaker 1: start cooking it up. Okay, let me see a pot
- 2:03Speaker 1: holder apprehiated this skillet and she has long nails, so
- 2:07Speaker 1: I'm definitely intrigue to watch this and you cook all
- 2:10Speaker 1: the time, and your nails is the jewelry. Honey. I
- 2:12Speaker 1: should took that though, but anyway, um, okay, so always
- 2:17Speaker 1: if you have a hand like this and you gotta
- 2:20Speaker 1: metal handle, no that that thing gets up too. So
- 2:24Speaker 1: that's why I got the pot. Oh good, this is
- 2:26Speaker 1: what I wanted. Okay, Now I can turn it down
- 2:30Speaker 1: a little bit, all right, So you're taking me, get
- 2:34Speaker 1: your a little fatulor thing here. Just dump here. Oh
- 2:37Speaker 1: there's a little water. I'm gonna put that on here. Okay,
- 2:40Speaker 1: go for it. Do what they gotta do, real ne do,
- 2:44Speaker 1: real ship. Okay, so there we go, Bama. You don't
- 2:49Speaker 1: want that water, it's gonna it's gonna make enough juice. Anyway.
- 2:55Speaker 1: I'm gonna wipe that little up. That was just a
- 2:58Speaker 1: little defrost, honeyway, but then break it up, keep it
- 3:02Speaker 1: moving around. It smells good too, already not turning it down.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah it does. You don't smell that beef. So the
- 3:12Speaker 1: last time, oh wow, it's been years since I actually
- 3:16Speaker 1: had a sloppy joe actually, so I'm sort of looking
- 3:19Speaker 1: forward to this kind of nostalgic. I started with it hot,
- 3:22Speaker 1: as you saw, but then you turned it down, okay,
- 3:26Speaker 1: because this ain't quite as non stick as I thought,
- 3:28Speaker 1: but if you keep it moving. So when you were
- 3:33Speaker 1: eating Sloppy Joel before the last couple of years, like
- 3:36Speaker 1: what was going on? I think that when I was
- 3:39Speaker 1: eating Sloppy Joe's, I was living in the suburbs of Oakland, California,
- 3:45Speaker 1: place called Castle Valley. Were one of the few black
- 3:48Speaker 1: families living there, and my father was a uh supervisor
- 3:56Speaker 1: for crustodians for Hayward Area Recreation and Practice trick. Mom
- 4:01Speaker 1: was a nurse to work at Holland Hospital in Oakland,
- 4:03Speaker 1: and I just remember we were very for a while
- 4:06Speaker 1: in my life. We're very you know. I was in
- 4:09Speaker 1: Harriet Brady Bunch's normal suburban family with the you know,
- 4:16Speaker 1: kid and the clothes and the swimming lessons and then
- 4:20Speaker 1: the alcoholic you know, it's always one of them in
- 4:22Speaker 1: the house, and so um we had that. Now let
- 4:26Speaker 1: me just let's just say the meat. I've been adjusting
- 4:29Speaker 1: this this heat because this is electric. I'm really an
- 4:32Speaker 1: old gas so girl. But um, now they're just started
- 4:35Speaker 1: to brown. I'm gonna take some of the powder first
- 4:40Speaker 1: and put it in here as season season of meat,
- 4:43Speaker 1: and usually if you do this, you don't really have
- 4:45Speaker 1: to add normal salt, normal pepper. Let me make sure
- 4:49Speaker 1: isn't the good one. I've never done it with the powder. Look, kid, Okay,
- 4:56Speaker 1: I'm gonna add some. Okay, we're almost getting there. So
- 4:59Speaker 1: in I was living in the suburbs, you know, kind
- 5:02Speaker 1: of privileged young black girl, and I just remember Sloppy Joe's.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And there was always like these movies not movie A,
- 5:11Speaker 1: the weekend movie we come on Friday. I don't know
- 5:13Speaker 1: the movies. I would always watch me get Sloppy Joe.
- 5:16Speaker 1: Sometimes get French fries so you can get you know,
- 5:20Speaker 1: if you're on a budge, you can you I like
- 5:25Speaker 1: ca so flavored ruffle ridges take the chips. Ruffles were
- 5:30Speaker 1: so I've never even seen that. Mommy south of ten
- 5:35Speaker 1: Freeway to get ship like that. She knows what I mean.
- 5:41Speaker 1: So if you're a daughter of a nurse, a nurse
- 5:44Speaker 1: and a constodian, where does comedy fit into all of this?
- 5:48Speaker 1: Like nowhere it was tragic, but out of tragedy comes
- 5:52Speaker 1: to a comedy, right. So um, I had, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 1: got out of college and stuff like that and moved
- 6:00Speaker 1: to l a Long Beach to be specific to LBC.
- 6:04Speaker 1: It's important to break your meat up to you don't
- 6:06Speaker 1: want the biggest clumps. And one of my roommates, well,
- 6:10Speaker 1: my main roommate was dating a comedian and uh, he
- 6:14Speaker 1: would always be at the house and um, he would
- 6:20Speaker 1: hear me talking around the house and stuff, and he said,
- 6:22Speaker 1: you know, you're really funny. If you lift this soon
- 6:27Speaker 1: with the top one for a minute, if you, um,
- 6:30Speaker 1: do you want to turn it down? Na down? If
- 6:33Speaker 1: you if you want to come to this club I
- 6:35Speaker 1: work at this club. If you want to come to
- 6:36Speaker 1: this club where I work at, I'll let you go
- 6:38Speaker 1: up to minute that you come in. I was like,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I don't want to be no comedian. I'm trying to
- 6:42Speaker 1: sing background for Luther Vandro's. I spoked a lot of
- 6:44Speaker 1: weed in just seventies and I was really delustional. But
- 6:48Speaker 1: that never happened obviously, but that's what I wanted because
- 6:50Speaker 1: I stopped. The love video had me feeling some type
- 6:53Speaker 1: of way. Well, UM, me and my girls, after you know,
- 6:57Speaker 1: some drinks, went down to the club and he did
- 7:01Speaker 1: put me up the first night and I had not
- 7:04Speaker 1: you know, I don't tell jokes, I tell stories, so
- 7:07Speaker 1: you know, some things that happened to me that I
- 7:08Speaker 1: thought we're amusing might be amusing to other people. So
- 7:11Speaker 1: I already knew what I was gonna say. I went
- 7:13Speaker 1: up there and I killed it. The first time I
- 7:15Speaker 1: was on stage. And when I got off stage, this
- 7:17Speaker 1: man came up to me and he said, you know,
- 7:19Speaker 1: you're really funny. You need to come to my club.
- 7:22Speaker 1: He was funny, little bit after your first My first card,
- 7:26Speaker 1: and that was Robin, Robin Williams, Robin Harris, Robin Harris,
- 7:30Speaker 1: the Great Robin here all right, now, all the meat
- 7:34Speaker 1: is ready and we're gonna see where they do on TV.
- 7:41Speaker 1: So that's yeah, the first time I ever did I killed.
- 7:45Speaker 1: So it was destiny. I followed where you hoped from there,
- 7:49Speaker 1: like passion Wise Donna entertainment before the because I had
- 7:53Speaker 1: done theater and I knew that I wanted to be
- 7:57Speaker 1: an entertainment. I watched a lot of TV alone and
- 8:00Speaker 1: stuff like that. So right now we've mixed some of
- 8:05Speaker 1: the sloppy Joe sauce in with the meat. Now here's
- 8:08Speaker 1: where the trick comes in. You gotta get the dynamic right.
- 8:10Speaker 1: You don't want too much meat and not enough sauce,
- 8:13Speaker 1: because that just is a crumbled up hamburger, and you
- 8:17Speaker 1: don't want too much sauce and not enough meat because
- 8:20Speaker 1: then it's really sloppy Sloppy Joe. Okay. Also, I'm very uh,
- 8:27Speaker 1: cheese oriented, and I would have thrown some cheese on mine.
- 8:30Speaker 1: But the original Sloppy Joe didn't have no cheese. So
- 8:32Speaker 1: this is the original. You know what, that sounds fantastic?
- 8:35Speaker 1: I never thought of that. The original Sloppy Joe never
- 8:37Speaker 1: had no cheese. But I'm a cheese freak. That's it
- 8:40Speaker 1: would taste amazing with cheese. Okay, So just let that
- 8:45Speaker 1: similar for just a minute, and I'm gonna see if
- 8:47Speaker 1: I need to addy moreta and then we complate it. Okay, perfect,
- 8:53Speaker 1: So you get this card? You are you follow up?
- 8:56Speaker 1: You go to your second club? I assumer. Yeah, I
- 8:58Speaker 1: went to the Comedy Act Theater in the creen Shaw
- 9:00Speaker 1: Di Street where Robin Harris was the host. Every I
- 9:04Speaker 1: think it was Let's do the Wednesday or Thursday night
- 9:09Speaker 1: packed all the time? Pack back back, Young Jamie Fox,
- 9:12Speaker 1: Young d l You Lee, Young Tommy Davidson, Young, Damon Waye.
- 9:17Speaker 1: You know young, we was young. You know, this is before,
- 9:22Speaker 1: this is before comic View, I Believe and Out of
- 9:26Speaker 1: Comic View and Fat Tuesday documentary on Amazon Prime right
- 9:29Speaker 1: now between uh, the where Robin was at the Comedy
- 9:34Speaker 1: Act and I was a comedy store. That's when people
- 9:38Speaker 1: started paying attention to black comedians, and that's when we
- 9:41Speaker 1: first got our national television. A closure is basically on
- 9:44Speaker 1: Comic View. Okay, yeah, this looks good to me. Yeah,
- 9:50Speaker 1: it looks good. It smells good. Looks ready. You know
- 9:53Speaker 1: when I make Sloppy Joe, I never make it that good.
- 9:55Speaker 1: It's usually I dumped the whole can. And now I
- 9:58Speaker 1: know that you have to pay the ratio. Yeah. Now,
- 10:01Speaker 1: for those who watching the cholesterol, you could drain this
- 10:05Speaker 1: because there is a little little grease in the bum.
- 10:08Speaker 1: But for those who original Sloppy Joe eaters, we don't
- 10:10Speaker 1: call it grease. We call it juice. So okay, let
- 10:13Speaker 1: me get up done. Okay, Well that's that baby. Okay.
- 10:17Speaker 1: I don't want to touch your bun. I want to
- 10:19Speaker 1: touch yours, but it's okay, so let me uh yeah,
- 10:25Speaker 1: Richa played over. We're gonna We're gonna play this like
- 10:29Speaker 1: Gordon ramsay and then say, now, the point is the
- 10:32Speaker 1: ship is slappy that's why they call it sloppy Joe.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Now do you keep yours piled high? Or do you
- 10:38Speaker 1: do it? I'm doing about it like that because it
- 10:40Speaker 1: I'll fall out anyway. So I'm getting one of my
- 10:42Speaker 1: little hit though a little corner field. Thank you, okay,
- 10:46Speaker 1: and I'm gonna make mine. Then we're gonna do it
- 10:49Speaker 1: like muck bang has been food porn the baby. When
- 10:52Speaker 1: I eat mine, it's all of a finger licking things.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Do you watch those videos on Instagram where the person's
- 10:57Speaker 1: like eating lobster and crab and they're sucking all the
- 10:59Speaker 1: two is out. I did until I saw a woman
- 11:06Speaker 1: of a certain nationality about the head off a turtle.
- 11:09Speaker 1: When I saw that, I stopped watching. I'm a huge
- 11:12Speaker 1: fan of that. Just in case anywhere I love what.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I'm like, where did you get those crab legs? And
- 11:17Speaker 1: they call it the A S M R? Or whatever?
- 11:20Speaker 1: The noise I'm here? Oh yeah, I like that. I
- 11:23Speaker 1: know it's kind of cool, right right? Is that? Are
- 11:27Speaker 1: you weird? There's millions of there's millions of y'all out
- 11:29Speaker 1: there like that. Okay, we're gonna move this off. Then
- 11:35Speaker 1: it was under five minutes. Yeah, you have to be
- 11:38Speaker 1: complete bumm not to be able to do this. Okay,
- 11:42Speaker 1: you want to taste it, Yes, let's do taste. It's
- 11:44Speaker 1: not gonna be too hot. No, it might be a
- 11:46Speaker 1: little hot. I got a little forks on the side
- 11:48Speaker 1: just in case we got to always have to scoop
- 11:51Speaker 1: up from me. You know. Okay, this might be hot. Okay,
- 11:54Speaker 1: let's see what we got the bus to protect this? Right,
- 12:01Speaker 1: that's a classic. That's a great classic. And you did
- 12:04Speaker 1: it way better than I've ever done the African American.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I mean I wanted to very badly add some more sault,
- 12:13Speaker 1: but being there I live in l A and were
- 12:15Speaker 1: very health conscious out here, I didn't do that. I
- 12:18Speaker 1: want you to know how hard that was for me.
- 12:20Speaker 1: Have you thought about adding that, Lorries? Yes, for sure,
- 12:25Speaker 1: I mean it's true. M hmm. I will say that's
- 12:31Speaker 1: the lesson to walk away with is acknowledging the sauce
- 12:36Speaker 1: to meet ratio. Then also you have the prerogative, if
- 12:41Speaker 1: you just like a juicy baby, always script the most
- 12:44Speaker 1: sauce on the while on the can dip it and
- 12:48Speaker 1: stop it if you're really from the stop. So now
- 12:51Speaker 1: we tried trdish. I really want to get up close
- 12:54Speaker 1: and personal with you on how you got to success.
- 12:58Speaker 1: In every time my turn on the TV, I feel
- 13:01Speaker 1: like you're in every movie. I called myself to pop
- 13:07Speaker 1: up Queen, because I'm forever popping up on something. I
- 13:11Speaker 1: think that I learned a very big lesson from Laura Hayes,
- 13:16Speaker 1: who was one of the original queens. Queens of comedy,
- 13:20Speaker 1: Laura Hayes some More Monique and there Giverns. Laura's from
- 13:24Speaker 1: Open like me and Captain Mark Curry. So when I
- 13:31Speaker 1: came down here, when I got to l A, I
- 13:33Speaker 1: was already a beast. I've been doing comedy in Opland
- 13:37Speaker 1: for years. Everybody knew me. I was on TV. I
- 13:39Speaker 1: made my first two movies in the B area. But
- 13:43Speaker 1: I was also a wreck. You know, I was drinking
- 13:45Speaker 1: a lot. You think they invented throwing the glass at
- 13:48Speaker 1: a bench in the club on Real HOUSEWI was of Atlanta.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Now I started that ship and Laura told me, she said,
- 13:58Speaker 1: you know, people gotta you know, they should like you.
- 14:00Speaker 1: People need to like you. And I said, they don't
- 14:03Speaker 1: need to suck like me. I'm still the badest bitch
- 14:05Speaker 1: in the room, right cocky. But I found that not
- 14:08Speaker 1: to be true, people do need to like you, and
- 14:10Speaker 1: the people like you, they tell other people about you
- 14:13Speaker 1: and they tell them that you would love to experience
- 14:15Speaker 1: this person, and they're fun to be around. Maybe I
- 14:19Speaker 1: don't memorize as well as like Meryl Streep, you know,
- 14:22Speaker 1: or maybe Meryl Streep a little bit. How do we know?
- 14:24Speaker 1: You know? I don't think you're a bit by the way,
- 14:26Speaker 1: May and um, I loved you in the Devil where
- 14:30Speaker 1: it's product okay, and so yeah, I just think that
- 14:35Speaker 1: people enjoy working me because I'll be happy. It's fun
- 14:38Speaker 1: to be at work. Like people some actors, you be
- 14:41Speaker 1: there and you know you're going into maybe your thirteenth
- 14:43Speaker 1: hour or whatever, which in acting days two hours as
- 14:48Speaker 1: normal normal. So people may be like, I'm gonna go
- 14:52Speaker 1: on sitarian, may you go home? But didn't you pray
- 14:54Speaker 1: for this bitch? Like didn't you pray that you would
- 14:57Speaker 1: be here? I think they were just praying to be
- 14:59Speaker 1: on like the big stre like the front end of it.
- 15:01Speaker 1: But they didn't realize how much work went into it, right,
- 15:04Speaker 1: A lot of work, a lot of sacrifice. I have
- 15:07Speaker 1: a kid, how is your kid now? But you know
- 15:14Speaker 1: we went on young to fix my life just as
- 15:16Speaker 1: a trip to Atlanta and ended up being real therapeutic
- 15:19Speaker 1: for us. I found out that my absence and touring
- 15:23Speaker 1: and all that, you know, how it's effective. I found
- 15:25Speaker 1: out this lot should have went around wither that I
- 15:27Speaker 1: didn't know because I was gone, didn't even know, didn't
- 15:31Speaker 1: even I didn't know. So it comes from the sacrifice.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Rest if you want to be a woman in this business,
- 15:37Speaker 1: you know, and try to have a family like you
- 15:40Speaker 1: got damn gotta be superwoman to do that. But I
- 15:44Speaker 1: did it because my daughter is amazing. I don't know
- 15:47Speaker 1: where my baby daddy is too, he said, you know
- 15:49Speaker 1: where he is? Like I know him, Like we're friends.
- 15:53Speaker 1: A lot of people have babies and they can't even
- 15:57Speaker 1: be friends. But you at some point, motherfucker's charm do
- 16:01Speaker 1: it exactly? Don't you like that person? You know? And
- 16:06Speaker 1: then how to go so south? Maybe he wasn't trying
- 16:09Speaker 1: to collect firm in the bathroom. Who was? So you're
- 16:15Speaker 1: you're from Oakland, you're doing your thing? You moved? I want, yes,
- 16:27Speaker 1: do you moved to Los Angeles? You're doing while you're
- 16:29Speaker 1: killing it. Get this advice to be likable off stage
- 16:34Speaker 1: and off camera, right Yeah, well you're saying prior to
- 16:40Speaker 1: that you were drinking, and you were you were doing
- 16:42Speaker 1: drinking drug and I went to jail. I robbed a bank.
- 16:45Speaker 1: It's called embezzlement if you do it, and you worked
- 16:48Speaker 1: at the bank. Either way, you robbed the bank. I'd
- 16:50Speaker 1: like to say bank rob because they're giving me more
- 16:52Speaker 1: street cred and an event I did end up with jail.
- 16:55Speaker 1: I had a new baby four months in eighteen days
- 16:58Speaker 1: and twin Towers Correctional Facilty sees the shop, but you
- 17:01Speaker 1: had no I had my baby like five months before
- 17:06Speaker 1: I went to jails. Going on where you were led
- 17:10Speaker 1: to bank robbery, that's called bank robberts. You know, I
- 17:18Speaker 1: would love to say that I took the money because
- 17:25Speaker 1: I was trying to help somebody, or so I took
- 17:28Speaker 1: the money because I really needed a car and the
- 17:31Speaker 1: bank wasn't paying ship which the bank wasn't paying ship
- 17:34Speaker 1: toilers are the most important people in the bank. They
- 17:36Speaker 1: are people who interact with the customers may pay them
- 17:39Speaker 1: the least. I knew this bank was going to go
- 17:44Speaker 1: out of business because I've worked the several banks before,
- 17:46Speaker 1: and I said, they're not doing their ship right. And
- 17:48Speaker 1: I was like, wow, if they ain't doing their ship right.
- 17:53Speaker 1: If I get opportunity, I'm gonna get the ass right.
- 17:56Speaker 1: And I did get the opportunity, and I got to
- 17:58Speaker 1: ask for like fifty racks. So if I have took
- 18:01Speaker 1: less than that, and this is you know seven six
- 18:04Speaker 1: years ago, that was like a hundred thousand dollars, So um,
- 18:11Speaker 1: if you do a felon, if you do a misdemeanor,
- 18:13Speaker 1: like if I took ten, then I would have got
- 18:16Speaker 1: away with it because they didn't catch me. No, no,
- 18:20Speaker 1: I'm so they if you if you take a certain
- 18:23Speaker 1: amount of money under certain my money, it's a misdemeanor,
- 18:26Speaker 1: and you know it will go away after statue of limitations,
- 18:30Speaker 1: which is ten years. You got away with it. But
- 18:32Speaker 1: if you take a certain amount of money, that's a felony,
- 18:36Speaker 1: and felonies never go away. You could commit a felony
- 18:38Speaker 1: at twenty two years old and get popped for it
- 18:41Speaker 1: at eight seven years So they got my ass and
- 18:46Speaker 1: you know, learned the lesson. If you got the misdemeanor. One, No,
- 18:49Speaker 1: I got the felony, oh because it was so But
- 18:54Speaker 1: what was going on where you needed it? What were
- 18:56Speaker 1: you doing it? Oh? You were just feeling like they're
- 18:59Speaker 1: appreciate it. They just don't pay you enough, and the
- 19:03Speaker 1: opportunity rolls. So I took them back. What'd you do
- 19:06Speaker 1: with the money? Sucked it off, totally didn't do ship
- 19:09Speaker 1: worthy nothing. I did something from my parents. I flew
- 19:13Speaker 1: them too, the Lombes. I had a car and pick
- 19:15Speaker 1: them up, paid for a hotel room, paid for dinners,
- 19:20Speaker 1: and the thing all prepaid for. They got there and
- 19:23Speaker 1: they had a great time. They shouldn't know something's wrong then,
- 19:26Speaker 1: because I ain't. Never many will do. No. Were you
- 19:28Speaker 1: a comedian at the time, or m I love your gangster?
- 19:33Speaker 1: Oh my gosh, how my head? Jay knew me? Meat
- 19:39Speaker 1: on top of mind? There's more in the Parents, Bobby Joe.
- 19:42Speaker 1: I know I'm telling the audience. Look I didn't said
- 19:46Speaker 1: paddles and everything, but it wasn't. So so you can't
- 19:53Speaker 1: send you on after the whole bank robbery and you're
- 19:57Speaker 1: doing movies or like, what does that traject tree from
- 20:01Speaker 1: being broke to becoming a internet I can't imagine that
- 20:08Speaker 1: you'd still be broken. I'm not broke, no, but you
- 20:12Speaker 1: know I still got some things to do to get
- 20:15Speaker 1: what I want to be and to do what I
- 20:16Speaker 1: need to do. So how did that happen after I
- 20:20Speaker 1: got out of jail? Oh? This sized into my Fat
- 20:25Speaker 1: Tuesday promo that I threw in there. I got out
- 20:29Speaker 1: of jail, and you you get released in the same
- 20:32Speaker 1: clothes you get arrested in. So I was in like
- 20:37Speaker 1: a T shirt and overalls and hat on a robe.
- 20:39Speaker 1: That's what I got arrested in. And I got out
- 20:42Speaker 1: of my jail clothes. That's what I was released in
- 20:45Speaker 1: downtown l A on the corner in a robe. Back
- 20:49Speaker 1: to how did you they go out? Oh, they the
- 20:52Speaker 1: fats came and got my ass in Oakland, California. They
- 20:54Speaker 1: just randomly popped up on your random They had planned it.
- 20:57Speaker 1: It was, you know, quite a surprise to me. Though
- 21:01Speaker 1: I went to jail once, I ended up in the
- 21:02Speaker 1: same situation outside downtown l A, in the same outfit.
- 21:06Speaker 1: And you know what the sad thing is, I think
- 21:07Speaker 1: myself phone died and I had to go to like
- 21:09Speaker 1: a random McDonald's. I called the girl behind camera. Her
- 21:13Speaker 1: and her daughter picked me up. Head on to mackenzie. Baby.
- 21:18Speaker 1: They don't know. People don't know. They don't know, you know,
- 21:20Speaker 1: but um, so you get out of jail, jail, I'm
- 21:26Speaker 1: eating all my stobbag Joe, but going do you know
- 21:29Speaker 1: what I wasn't I quit with me about four days ago,
- 21:40Speaker 1: so I didn't have no clothes. My girlfriend the next
- 21:44Speaker 1: day took me by me like a sweatsuit. Um, I
- 21:49Speaker 1: didn't have no property, so they arrested me in my road.
- 21:54Speaker 1: So um, she got me a train ticket to go
- 21:59Speaker 1: back to Oakland. But before I'm went back to Oakland after,
- 22:06Speaker 1: I said, take me to the comedy store. Take me
- 22:08Speaker 1: through the comedy store, please. It just happened to be Tuesday,
- 22:12Speaker 1: which was fat Tuesday. I got in there. I told
- 22:15Speaker 1: guy Tory. I said, Guy, so everybody knew I've been
- 22:19Speaker 1: a jail you know words yep. And this was before
- 22:25Speaker 1: the internet, okay, And I said, guy, I just got
- 22:31Speaker 1: out of jail. You know you said, no, I'm glad
- 22:34Speaker 1: to see your ship. I'm like, yo, let me go up, bro,
- 22:37Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta get some shirt off my chest
- 22:39Speaker 1: real quick. He let me go up in my j
- 22:43Speaker 1: C Pennies for its suit. I told him, when I've
- 22:46Speaker 1: just been through that, I was traumatized. I can't eat
- 22:50Speaker 1: apples no more. Becausin jail. Every fucking day to get
- 22:52Speaker 1: your fucking if I see apple and and throw it
- 22:56Speaker 1: at a bit right. So I just told him all
- 22:58Speaker 1: that everything that persed my tell them how glad I
- 23:00Speaker 1: want to be free? And I got a standing ovation,
- 23:03Speaker 1: and then I got on the train to go home.
- 23:06Speaker 1: So that's the strength of somebody who was born to
- 23:09Speaker 1: do comedy. Before I want to see my baby, I
- 23:13Speaker 1: had to hit the stage. I had to get it out. Yeah,
- 23:17Speaker 1: So then you go back home, and then do you
- 23:21Speaker 1: or anybody in here. We're for the fans and any
- 23:23Speaker 1: ship like that, because yeah, look everything you don't fell
- 23:26Speaker 1: out my people's ship, don't sell out. Everybody fell out,
- 23:30Speaker 1: I said, the fans and everything. Everything went to no one.
- 23:36Speaker 1: We're just We're just okay. So go ahead. So you
- 23:43Speaker 1: you go back to Oakland. Then what after a standing
- 23:46Speaker 1: ovation which was probably tough and exciting, thrilling, and said
- 23:50Speaker 1: all at the same time. I'd imagine I did. It
- 23:53Speaker 1: wasn't my goal. My goal was just I gotta tell you, guys,
- 23:55Speaker 1: what this happened was therapy for you. A lot of
- 24:00Speaker 1: people like your church four months in eight oh no,
- 24:05Speaker 1: I had one day, and yet but they gave me four.
- 24:09Speaker 1: I did four months in eighteen days on a year.
- 24:11Speaker 1: If you get over a year, a year and a day,
- 24:12Speaker 1: you gotta go to the penitentiary. I will surely not
- 24:16Speaker 1: be here, and they knew I was. And then what's up?
- 24:18Speaker 1: What's up? Comedian? So then after you get back from
- 24:24Speaker 1: oak or when you're in Oakland, what's going on in
- 24:26Speaker 1: your head? You have a standing ovation. Everybody loves your comedy.
- 24:31Speaker 1: It's your therapy. I was welcomed back, you know, come
- 24:35Speaker 1: get your baby, and your parents had no my baby.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Daddy and his mama had my baby and they have
- 24:45Speaker 1: done telethon and everything. Gave him some money to help
- 24:48Speaker 1: take care of the baby, and I just I think
- 24:56Speaker 1: I got married and then of my husband left my
- 25:02Speaker 1: daughter again whether father and came to l A and
- 25:07Speaker 1: I've been here twenty years now. He told me that
- 25:10Speaker 1: I'll keep the baby. Just don't go down there bullshitting,
- 25:13Speaker 1: and you know I didn't. That was cool. Yeah, he
- 25:17Speaker 1: was a good guy. So then you came down here
- 25:22Speaker 1: and you didn't play, you came kill. I don't know,
- 25:24Speaker 1: it just happened. You know, there's no it's hard to
- 25:28Speaker 1: go step by step with what happened. But I started
- 25:32Speaker 1: being nicer. Did you ease back on drinking and smoking?
- 25:36Speaker 1: Or or did you are you still like? I didn't
- 25:38Speaker 1: sell that, but um, yeah I did. I had to
- 25:43Speaker 1: because the more work you get, you don't have time
- 25:45Speaker 1: for hangovers. You can't be being a don't nobody want
- 25:48Speaker 1: you get tired. My desire to work was stronger than
- 25:53Speaker 1: my desire to drink or do any dope. So that one.
- 25:58Speaker 1: So you're doing stand up, where does the pivot into
- 26:00Speaker 1: acting come into play? I did acting before I just
- 26:06Speaker 1: stand up, because before I left Oakland the first time,
- 26:10Speaker 1: I had already done my first movie, which was shot
- 26:14Speaker 1: in San Francisco. So I married an actor, Maty Where,
- 26:17Speaker 1: which is mc meyer's first movie before he started any
- 26:19Speaker 1: of the Austro power stuff. Then I also filmed the
- 26:24Speaker 1: movie that got me into the screen Actors Guild, I
- 26:27Speaker 1: mean San Francisco. I filmed The Rock with Sean Connery
- 26:31Speaker 1: and Nicholas k on Alcatrad. So I did that before
- 26:35Speaker 1: I ever came to l A. And I did that
- 26:38Speaker 1: before I was doing stand up. I was doing theater then.
- 26:41Speaker 1: And I thought you said that you wanted to be
- 26:42Speaker 1: a singer at one point, Yeah, I told you drinking
- 26:45Speaker 1: from Uncle Love. So no, but I had that musical
- 26:51Speaker 1: theater too. I did just show in San Francisco for
- 26:53Speaker 1: three years called Peace Black Babylon, and it was a
- 26:57Speaker 1: musical cabaret as long as you can google as the
- 26:59Speaker 1: longest and in cabaret show I think in the world,
- 27:02Speaker 1: because they ran for like fifty years and it would
- 27:06Speaker 1: change them and stuff. You had to be able to sing, dance,
- 27:08Speaker 1: act to be in that show. So to do it
- 27:10Speaker 1: for three years, you know, I used to concern good
- 27:13Speaker 1: until I start howling like a lunatic going to stage
- 27:16Speaker 1: doing all this goddamn stand up. So when did you
- 27:19Speaker 1: realize in your career that you had arrived. Was there
- 27:23Speaker 1: a pivotal moment where you were like, I hit the
- 27:26Speaker 1: tipping point. Not yet, not yet? No, not yet? Wow?
- 27:34Speaker 1: Is that because you keep moving the ceiling, you keep
- 27:36Speaker 1: moving them? Maybe? Maybe maybe maybe that? But I just
- 27:40Speaker 1: have so many more things to offer and to do,
- 27:45Speaker 1: and so many more goals to reach that I haven't reach. Ship.
- 27:48Speaker 1: You know, you make a goal, you meet it, then
- 27:50Speaker 1: you should make another goal. Meet that. So I've made goals,
- 27:53Speaker 1: but I still got goals to go. So I don't
- 27:57Speaker 1: think that. Do you feel a sense of tentment every
- 28:00Speaker 1: time you reached the goal, or do you feel like, yeah,
- 28:03Speaker 1: but I've expected it, you know, the Lord ordered my
- 28:06Speaker 1: steps crazy to make found and I foresaw all this
- 28:09Speaker 1: if I just got a chance. If I got a chance,
- 28:12Speaker 1: I mean I used to do stuff like you get
- 28:16Speaker 1: a National Enquirer right then there's a gossip section National Inquired,
- 28:21Speaker 1: and it may say stuff like Leonardo DiCaprio was seen
- 28:25Speaker 1: at Boa last night. With that. So I had a
- 28:29Speaker 1: phone book, so I would write down Boa and then
- 28:32Speaker 1: I would call Information when you start died for one
- 28:35Speaker 1: one and I'd say can I get the address to
- 28:38Speaker 1: Boa in Beverly Hills And then they would give me no,
- 28:44Speaker 1: can I get the phone number? You get the phone number,
- 28:46Speaker 1: then you call them and then you get the address,
- 28:50Speaker 1: and then you reference who goes there. So I had
- 28:52Speaker 1: a whole book saying like Leonardo di Caprio goes to Boa,
- 28:55Speaker 1: here's the address is front. What would you do with
- 28:58Speaker 1: the information? Though, I would come down on here and
- 29:01Speaker 1: if I could get somebody to bring me to Hollywood,
- 29:03Speaker 1: which was very rare, I would just walk around. But
- 29:06Speaker 1: when they did and I took the bus, I would
- 29:08Speaker 1: come up Western to sunset and then come down sunset
- 29:12Speaker 1: and get off, and then just walk around and look
- 29:15Speaker 1: at the stuff, look at the palm trees, and look
- 29:17Speaker 1: at the hills and look at the houses and the
- 29:19Speaker 1: buildings and feel the vibe and feel what it's like
- 29:22Speaker 1: to be in Hollywood and walk down to Beverly Hills
- 29:26Speaker 1: and feel what that's like and look at those houses,
- 29:29Speaker 1: and I'm manifested at all. Would you ever go inside
- 29:32Speaker 1: bow and just eat? Just to know that I was
- 29:36Speaker 1: on the bus. Remember, I ain't had no ball of money,
- 29:39Speaker 1: but I walked by it like you know these places
- 29:42Speaker 1: on on sunset now that I eat that I used
- 29:44Speaker 1: to walk by and go, God, look at them. Wow.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Now was there ever a point in your career where
- 29:49Speaker 1: you felt a little bit of doubt or like questioned
- 29:54Speaker 1: several times, was the time that you could like remember A,
- 30:00Speaker 1: That's when I probably had tape like excuse me, like
- 30:05Speaker 1: my third pilot excuse me that I thought was really
- 30:09Speaker 1: good and it got passed on and ship I'm like,
- 30:12Speaker 1: this is some bullshit. These motherfucker's not gonna let me in,
- 30:16Speaker 1: you know. And I still have not gotten into where,
- 30:20Speaker 1: you know, like I don't haven't had my own show.
- 30:21Speaker 1: I've never been a regular on the series. I've never
- 30:25Speaker 1: had a series. I've never been you know, I had
- 30:29Speaker 1: a parking spot and all that stuff except very few times,
- 30:33Speaker 1: you know, And my goal was to be the next
- 30:37Speaker 1: black woman in late night. I wouldly think that I
- 30:39Speaker 1: suit late night. You know, I don't want to do daytime.
- 30:42Speaker 1: I want to do late night. Plus, the snow snow
- 30:46Speaker 1: blizzard of white men in late night right now is
- 30:49Speaker 1: in gross need of revision. You know, they need to
- 30:53Speaker 1: have some Latinos. They need. They had George Lopez show
- 30:56Speaker 1: was amazing. Why they take the funk that off? Why?
- 30:59Speaker 1: Because it was great? You know from the moment you
- 31:01Speaker 1: hear low riding, he comes out and breaks it down
- 31:04Speaker 1: like an essay and then all these guests. Why they
- 31:07Speaker 1: take that off? Why didn't take our senior offter We
- 31:09Speaker 1: just had the Netflix since the Joe Comedy Festival here,
- 31:11Speaker 1: and they're like, and our senior filmed live and interviewed
- 31:15Speaker 1: Cat and interviewed Snoop and stuff. Why did you take
- 31:17Speaker 1: it off in the first place? So you know, you
- 31:20Speaker 1: got two white men named Jimmy. I mean it's enough already,
- 31:25Speaker 1: Like there's somebody in so we'll see how that goes.
- 31:28Speaker 1: But I'm gonna, you know, keep doing trying to do
- 31:30Speaker 1: that until n tell it happens. So what are the
- 31:34Speaker 1: dishes in your house now that you're arrived? Like, what
- 31:37Speaker 1: is it like if I went to your house yesterday
- 31:40Speaker 1: or today? Like? What are you eating when you're not
- 31:42Speaker 1: on the road with Cat Williams or whoever? I tell
- 31:45Speaker 1: you eat kind of lavish when we're on the road,
- 31:48Speaker 1: on the road lavish, like what well, you know, if
- 31:51Speaker 1: we're in Maryland, I'm gonna have crab and stuff like that.
- 31:54Speaker 1: If we're in you know, Atlanta, I'm gonna have so food.
- 31:58Speaker 1: We're in sant San Antonio, I'm going Mexican foods. I
- 32:00Speaker 1: try on the cuisine, dammit, and my house I try.
- 32:08Speaker 1: I have a cousin who lives with me, but she's
- 32:11Speaker 1: a comedian as well, so she goes on. But when
- 32:13Speaker 1: she's oh, she she's a total gour mate. She I
- 32:19Speaker 1: just you know, all kinds of ship when she's When
- 32:21Speaker 1: she's gone, then I go back to my green juices,
- 32:24Speaker 1: robotic this. Oh I want to know, I'm not going
- 32:28Speaker 1: to your house. That's what I got. It's healthy. Well
- 32:31Speaker 1: for the grits and the potatoes and running bagon Jimmy
- 32:35Speaker 1: Dean Sully a ballot because I might wake up in
- 32:40Speaker 1: the wanting and do a smoothie or get that I
- 32:42Speaker 1: say you boy, or whatever like that. Most of the
- 32:44Speaker 1: time I want some grits and potatoes, but I might
- 32:47Speaker 1: do that just as a balance from when she's gone,
- 32:49Speaker 1: because I know when she's there, I don't eat like
- 32:51Speaker 1: a queen, you know, so I try to eat like
- 32:53Speaker 1: a pauper, a little healthy paper one when she's not there. Well,
- 32:56Speaker 1: before we close out, what advice would you give to
- 32:59Speaker 1: a median actor someone getting into a career like yourselves,
- 33:09Speaker 1: besides being kind, which I think is great advice, Well,
- 33:13Speaker 1: I'm kind, but I'm not no punk, so they also
- 33:15Speaker 1: know that too. So you know, I have been known to,
- 33:18Speaker 1: you know, pop off. So um, I would say, don't
- 33:24Speaker 1: be a drunk. That's a big, big thing in comedy.
- 33:28Speaker 1: People like to drink. And if you're old and established
- 33:33Speaker 1: and you know how to handle your look at what
- 33:35Speaker 1: to do or how to do your thing, that's one thing.
- 33:37Speaker 1: But if you're young and excited and sloppy drunk, people
- 33:40Speaker 1: remember that really really for a long time. And then also,
- 33:44Speaker 1: don't fool yourself. If you can't sing, stop trying to
- 33:48Speaker 1: be a singer. Okay, if you're not fucking funny and
- 33:52Speaker 1: you don't have it in you, don't try to be
- 33:55Speaker 1: a comedian. Maybe you could write for a comedian, or
- 33:57Speaker 1: maybe you could you know, you might end up being
- 33:59Speaker 1: a I said director. Everybody wants to be holding stuff
- 34:02Speaker 1: out in front of the camera, but the people that's
- 34:04Speaker 1: important to the people behind the goddamn camera. We need
- 34:06Speaker 1: more black directors and women directors. And the movie Block
- 34:10Speaker 1: Party that I got coming out of June eighth is
- 34:12Speaker 1: Don Willkers. That was our director of Black Female from Canada. Yeah,
- 34:17Speaker 1: come back June. Speaking of June, where else can we
- 34:21Speaker 1: find you at? Like? What else are you doing that
- 34:24Speaker 1: we can Okay? Like I said, Black Party comes out
- 34:26Speaker 1: June eighth. I don't know when this is gonna hit,
- 34:28Speaker 1: but June eight in five theaters and on b Et
- 34:31Speaker 1: Plus called Block Party. The star is Mark Margaret Avery,
- 34:36Speaker 1: who was Sugar Avery in the original color Purple. So
- 34:39Speaker 1: I kissed her feet constantly and she's amazing. She's funny,
- 34:43Speaker 1: and she's sexty and she's great. And then there's a
- 34:45Speaker 1: bunch of new names that are really killing it that
- 34:50Speaker 1: you will get to know and myself and I wear
- 34:52Speaker 1: five different wigs in the movie. It's amazing. I want
- 34:56Speaker 1: to see. Yeah, yeah, yeah, thank you. It's gonna be
- 35:00Speaker 1: very great. So I got that. And then, um just
- 35:03Speaker 1: finished touring with cat uh for the last nine months,
- 35:07Speaker 1: and I'm out on the road now doing my fresh
- 35:10Speaker 1: out of favorite comedy tour it myself, uh comedians. So
- 35:14Speaker 1: you sulk at my cousin and the one who's the cook,
- 35:18Speaker 1: the assassin, the Kassian assassin, and then at real Aaron Thompson,
- 35:22Speaker 1: Aaron Thompson, the three of us, uh, you know, under
- 35:25Speaker 1: road doing a thing back in the club. Because when
- 35:28Speaker 1: I was with k it was Arena Arena, arena AA
- 35:30Speaker 1: arena five teen seven, twelve, thirteen thousand people. But this
- 35:34Speaker 1: is you know, more like three hundred, four hundred people max.
- 35:37Speaker 1: And so I'm doing that and uh, you know, like
- 35:41Speaker 1: I'm said, being ready to shoot this pilot and hopefully
- 35:44Speaker 1: this one's gonna get it, get a chance to yeah, yeah,
- 35:47Speaker 1: this one's gonna get it, and and and and you
- 35:51Speaker 1: can just had a million on Instagram. I guess that's
- 35:55Speaker 1: a big thing. That's a huge deal. Well, I don't know,
- 35:57Speaker 1: Butterfly saw my asser, I hit a million nin but
- 36:00Speaker 1: under the opportunities whatever, we'll see. But um so that's
- 36:04Speaker 1: at lu new on Instagram, at l U E N
- 36:07Speaker 1: E L L heylu now dot com my website. If
- 36:10Speaker 1: you want to get merchandise and stuff on my YouTube shows,
- 36:14Speaker 1: just hey lu now sixty two episodes of Binge watched.
- 36:17Speaker 1: It starts way back before my Aubrey or any of that,
- 36:21Speaker 1: and it just goes deep and then it comes back
- 36:23Speaker 1: out light and it's really I'm proud of that show.
- 36:26Speaker 1: And you know, I'm just tooling around doing ship animated
- 36:29Speaker 1: voice over and blah blah blah I do. I'm blessed
- 36:33Speaker 1: that in that capacity. Well, I I let me tell
- 36:39Speaker 1: you something I was. I'm here with you. I don't
- 36:40Speaker 1: know what. Oh yeah, sorry, my triping my polis is
- 36:48Speaker 1: over there going yeah, I didn't know what I'm doing.
- 36:50Speaker 1: That means Hacks, because I'm also on that show on
- 36:54Speaker 1: HBO Max called Hacks that Jean Smart is the lead
- 36:58Speaker 1: and it's amazing. Easily got the biggest billboard on Sunset
