- 1:50Speaker 2: A Plan for Ishmael Before this story, we learned about
- 1:55Speaker 2: Abraham and how he told King Abimelech, Sarah is my sister,
- 2:00Speaker 2: to protect himself. He took her, but God warned him
- 2:04Speaker 2: in a dream and restored Abraham and Sarah. Now we
- 2:08Speaker 2: will learn about how Abraham and Sarah will have a
- 2:11Speaker 2: son named Isaac, just as God promised, inspired by the
- 2:16Speaker 2: book of Genesis.
- 2:21Speaker 3: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:24Speaker 3: Bible in a Year podcast. A long-awaited birth, that's where
- 2:29Speaker 3: we begin today. Long-awaited seems like an understatement. Abraham and
- 2:34Speaker 3: Sarah have waited and prayed and strayed so many times
- 2:38Speaker 3: over these decades, and now God is giving them a son, Isaac.
- 2:43Speaker 3: It's a joyous celebration of a promise fulfilled, but not
- 2:47Speaker 3: everyone is thrilled. And today we're going to see what
- 2:50Speaker 3: happens with Abraham's first son Ishmael and his mother Hagar.
- 2:55Speaker 3: As you listen to the story, try to imagine what
- 2:59Speaker 3: each of the characters would have been feeling. Sarah, who
- 3:02Speaker 3: finally has her son and now sees him being mistreated
- 3:05Speaker 3: by the offspring of her servant Hagar, whom she gave
- 3:09Speaker 3: to Abraham to try to speed up and short-circuit God's plan. Ishmael,
- 3:15Speaker 3: the eldest son who knows he's not the chosen one,
- 3:19Speaker 3: He was not received with this kind of fanfare and jubilation.
- 3:22Speaker 3: And Hagar, who is sitting on the sidelines again, knowing
- 3:25Speaker 3: that Sarah holds a deep contempt for her and her son,
- 3:29Speaker 3: even though it was her idea, Sarah's idea, in the
- 3:32Speaker 3: very beginning. And think of Abraham, caught in the crossfire,
- 3:37Speaker 3: trying to handle such a very messy family situation with wisdom,
- 3:41Speaker 3: caring for his new son and his oldest son and
- 3:44Speaker 3: his wife Sarah. Finally, watch how God works in the
- 3:48Speaker 3: situation to bring good out of such a dysfunctional family dynamic.
- 3:54Speaker 3: How once again He pours grace out on His children,
- 3:57Speaker 3: just as He does for you and me. Now, let's
- 4:00Speaker 3: listen to the passage today and hear Ishmael's story.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Abraham was a hundred years old, and Sarah was ninety
- 4:09Speaker 2: years old. At last the promises of God were realized.
- 4:14Speaker 2: After months of an unexpected pregnancy, Sarah gave birth to
- 4:18Speaker 2: a son. The promised son of God emerged from the
- 4:22Speaker 2: once barren womb of Sarah. Abraham named him Isaac, which
- 4:27Speaker 2: means laughter. A suitable name, since Sarah's old age had
- 4:32Speaker 2: made it impossible for her to have children, yet nothing
- 4:36Speaker 2: was impossible for God. Sarah rejoiced, saying, God has made
- 4:41Speaker 2: laughter for me, and everyone who hears of this will
- 4:44Speaker 2: laugh over me, for I have had a child in
- 4:48Speaker 2: my old age. Isaac grew older, and when he was weaned,
- 4:53Speaker 2: Abraham held a great feast in his honor. During the feast,
- 4:58Speaker 2: Sarah noticed that Ishmael, the son of her servant Hagar,
- 5:01Speaker 2: was scoffing at Isaac. Ishmael, no doubt feeling jealous and unloved,
- 5:07Speaker 2: looked upon Isaac with contempt. Sarah erupted with anger and
- 5:12Speaker 2: once again lashed out at Abraham and Hagar. Banish this
- 5:17Speaker 2: slave woman and her son, for the son of this
- 5:20Speaker 2: slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Abraham grieved over this. Though Ishmael was a son born
- 5:30Speaker 2: from disobedience, he was his son nonetheless. Distressed and frustrated,
- 5:36Speaker 2: Abraham looked to God once again. BE NOT DISHEARTENED BECAUSE
- 5:41Speaker 2: OF THE BOY AND HIS MOTHER, GOD SAID. WHATEVER SARAH
- 5:45Speaker 2: SAYS TO YOU, DO AS SHE TELLS YOU, FOR I
- 5:48Speaker 2: HAVE CHOSEN ISAAC TO BE YOUR HEIR. YET I WILL
- 5:52Speaker 2: NOT FORGET ISHMAEL, AND I WILL MAKE A GREAT NATION
- 5:55Speaker 2: OUT OF HIM AS WELL. SO ABRAHAM DID AS THE
- 5:58Speaker 2: LORD AND SARAH HAD ASKED. HE PACKED WATER AND FOOD
- 6:03Speaker 2: AND SENT HAGAR AND ISHMAEL INTO THE WILDERNESS ALONE. ABRAHAM,
- 6:08Speaker 2: who had spent years raising Ishmael, said his final goodbye.
- 6:13Speaker 2: The two wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba, slowly losing water, food,
- 6:18Speaker 2: and hope. The days grew longer and the nights colder. Thirsty, starving,
- 6:24Speaker 2: and alone, Hagar had lost all hope. She let Ishmael
- 6:29Speaker 2: sleep under a bush and walked several yards away. She
- 6:33Speaker 2: could not bear to watch him die, so she would
- 6:36Speaker 2: abandon him altogether. Hagar, as she did before when in despair,
- 6:42Speaker 2: lifted her voice to heaven, and God, as he did before,
- 6:46Speaker 2: heard her. Fear not, for I have heard the voice
- 6:50Speaker 2: of the boy where he is. Up, lift up your child,
- 6:54Speaker 2: and hold him fast with your hand, for I will
- 6:57Speaker 2: make him into a great nation just as I promised.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Soon after, Hagar discovered a well filled with water. The
- 7:06Speaker 2: two drank, regained their strength, and found a life for themselves.
- 7:11Speaker 2: God continued with Ishmael. As he promised, he showered Ishmael
- 7:16Speaker 2: with grace, giving him talent and a warrior's spirit. Hagar
- 7:20Speaker 2: would do right by her son, finding him an Egyptian
- 7:24Speaker 2: wife and helping him start a family. This would be
- 7:27Speaker 2: another sign of the steadfast love of God working in
- 7:32Speaker 2: family brokenness, restoring all things to make them better.
- 7:39Speaker 3: The birth of a child is an occasion that calls
- 7:42Speaker 3: for great celebration as a new life enters the world.
- 7:46Speaker 3: This is true of any birth. So how much more
- 7:49Speaker 3: was this true for the birth of Isaac? For years
- 7:53Speaker 3: and years, God had promised the day would come, and
- 7:56Speaker 3: finally it was here. I love how Sarah again turns
- 8:00Speaker 3: to laughter. This time, a laughter of joy and astonishment
- 8:04Speaker 3: at what has happened, what God has done. We've seen
- 8:07Speaker 3: her laugh in disbelief before. Now is the laugh of faith.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Now she is experiencing pure joy. And not only that,
- 8:17Speaker 3: she knows that she will no longer be laughed at
- 8:19Speaker 3: by others, but laughed with. Look at what it says
- 8:23Speaker 3: in Genesis 21, 6 and 7. Sarah said, God has
- 8:28Speaker 3: made laughter for me. Everyone who hears will laugh with me.
- 8:32Speaker 3: And she said, who would have said to Abraham that
- 8:35Speaker 3: Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have born him a
- 8:38Speaker 3: son in his old age. Once Isaac was weaned around
- 8:43Speaker 3: the age of two or three, there was a great
- 8:45Speaker 3: feast in his honor. This was, after all, cause for
- 8:49Speaker 3: extravagant celebration. I can just imagine the party that Abraham
- 8:54Speaker 3: and Sarah threw for their son, their pride and joy,
- 8:57Speaker 3: the fulfillment of God's promise. But not everyone was excited.
- 9:03Speaker 3: someone who was bound to feel left out, rejected, and replaced.
- 9:08Speaker 3: His name is Ishmael. Ishmael, no doubt, he wasn't anyone's
- 9:13Speaker 3: first choice other than Hagar, his mother. He probably knew
- 9:16Speaker 3: this day would come, but now that he was here,
- 9:19Speaker 3: the sting of rejection would have been almost too much
- 9:22Speaker 3: to bear. This child, of course, had done nothing to him,
- 9:25Speaker 3: but his existence alone was a threat and an insult.
- 9:29Speaker 3: So what did he do? Ishmael refused. mocked Isaac. Sarah
- 9:35Speaker 3: witnessed this and understandably burned with anger. She would protect
- 9:39Speaker 3: this child, her child, at all costs, especially from the
- 9:42Speaker 3: son of her servant Hagar, whom she had resented for years.
- 9:47Speaker 3: So she tells Abraham to drive them off, send them
- 9:50Speaker 3: away into the wilderness. Abraham is torn. He doesn't know
- 9:54Speaker 3: what to do. He cares deeply for both his sons
- 9:58Speaker 3: and for his wife and for Hagar. There seems to
- 10:02Speaker 3: be no good answer. So what does he do? You
- 10:06Speaker 3: and I often face tough issues, possibly even family strife
- 10:12Speaker 3: and separation, situations that seemingly have no solutions. We can
- 10:18Speaker 3: try to figure it out ourselves and risk making things
- 10:20Speaker 3: even worse. Or we can do what Abraham did. He
- 10:25Speaker 3: turned to God. And God told him to remember his
- 10:30Speaker 3: first loyalty, his first commitment, the one to his wife, Sarah.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Isaac is, after all, the one through whom God's promise
- 10:37Speaker 3: of a chosen people, a great nation to rescue all
- 10:40Speaker 3: other nations, would be fulfilled. This does not mean that
- 10:44Speaker 3: God neglected Ishmael and Hagar. or that he would abandon them.
- 10:49Speaker 3: He reassures Abraham of this very thing, saying that he
- 10:52Speaker 3: will also make Ishmael into a great nation because he
- 10:56Speaker 3: is Abraham's descendant. Wandering in the wilderness, nearly out of water,
- 11:01Speaker 3: it probably seemed to Hagar and Ishmael that God had
- 11:04Speaker 3: forgotten them. But at the right moment, God comes in
- 11:08Speaker 3: and rescues them, promising Hagar that he would prosper Ishmael
- 11:12Speaker 3: and multiply his descendants as well. One thing this passage
- 11:17Speaker 3: shows us is that God's blessings and promises for one person,
- 11:21Speaker 3: in the case of Isaac, do not preclude him from
- 11:25Speaker 3: also blessing others, people like you and me. And rather
- 11:29Speaker 3: than envying and mocking Isaac, Ishmael could rest in what
- 11:33Speaker 3: God has also promised him, knowing God will deliver just
- 11:37Speaker 3: as he is doing to Isaac, that he would deliver Ishmael.
- 11:42Speaker 3: This is still a very tragic and sad story A
- 11:46Speaker 3: family has forever been divided, but God's grace abounds. And
- 11:50Speaker 3: even in the messiness of his family, he blesses and
- 11:54Speaker 3: provides according to his purpose and fulfillment of his promises. God,
- 11:59Speaker 3: thank you for the story of Isaac and Ishmael. Thank
- 12:03Speaker 3: you for the hope it gives us for your ability
- 12:06Speaker 3: to intervene in family conflicts and strife and bring about
- 12:09Speaker 3: blessing for all who are involved. May we trust in you.
- 12:14Speaker 3: and the promises that you have given us. In Jesus' name, amen.
