- 0:00Speaker 1: Back on the Yukon Hockey Coach A Show. We are
- 0:02Speaker 1: live at Bear Smokehouse Barbecue and Hartford. Another live show
- 0:06Speaker 1: tomorrow night over in Manchester will be at Cafe Oor
- 0:08Speaker 1: with Mike's friend Geene Oriema from six to seven. You
- 0:11Speaker 1: can Women's basketball coach A show. Yes, now put this
- 0:16Speaker 1: state down. March the fourth, It's a Wednesday. We've talked
- 0:19Speaker 1: about doing this forever. Mike is going to join Gino
- 0:23Speaker 1: for the last coach Of show of the year at
- 0:24Speaker 1: Cafe Ara And basically, I'm gonna tell the guys when
- 0:27Speaker 1: to break, but the whole part of the show is
- 0:30Speaker 1: just let you two go at it for an hour.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Okay that night?
- 0:33Speaker 1: So wow, I know, I mean, well it it's Gino.
- 0:38Speaker 1: I understand that his after his after shows are fantastic
- 0:41Speaker 1: by the way he stays and does like an extra
- 0:43Speaker 1: half hour forty five minutes with the folks at cafe
- 0:45Speaker 1: or where we're here. So yeah, looking forward to that.
- 0:48Speaker 1: Watching the broadcast on uh well today, actually watched the
- 0:52Speaker 1: replay of your game Friday and you mentioned Northeastern like
- 0:56Speaker 1: five across or one three one or one four. How
- 1:00Speaker 1: exotic can you get defensively with teams, you know, making
- 1:05Speaker 1: their moves.
- 1:06Speaker 2: Up the ice. Are you saying when we have the
- 1:10Speaker 2: puck or are you saying we're on defense?
- 1:14Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess when you're on defense? How exotic can
- 1:17Speaker 1: you get it? I mean, it's it's not It shouldn't
- 1:19Speaker 1: be that hard.
- 1:20Speaker 2: No, I mean no, I mean, I mean, I think
- 1:24Speaker 2: there are some people that try to revolutionize the game,
- 1:27Speaker 2: but it's not that complicated. Some people sit back and trap,
- 1:31Speaker 2: and that's a trap, you know, I philosophically don't really
- 1:36Speaker 2: believe in that. I believe it's tougher on your opponent
- 1:41Speaker 2: when you're constantly putting pressure on them. Now, when you
- 1:44Speaker 2: do that, there's times that they break the pressure and
- 1:48Speaker 2: you can give up a good chance. However, I think
- 1:52Speaker 2: you create more Grade A chances for yourself when you're
- 1:56Speaker 2: pressure putting pressure on a team and you can wear
- 1:58Speaker 2: them down over six minutes right there. It's like blitzing
- 2:01Speaker 2: on every down. Yeah. Yeah, Occasionally when they break the blitz,
- 2:05Speaker 2: it's a big play. But if you're consistently doing it
- 2:08Speaker 2: really well, it's hard. Yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Seattle didn't have to blitz much last night. They were
- 2:13Speaker 1: bringing the pressure.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Well when they did yea, Yeah, I know, but even
- 2:15Speaker 2: when they did, it wasn't much of it. Yeah, I
- 2:18Speaker 2: got what a boring game it was.
- 2:20Speaker 1: It was, But defense does that to you and I
- 2:22Speaker 1: and I just never thought that the Patriot's going to
- 2:25Speaker 1: be able to score.
- 2:26Speaker 2: A defense or bad offense.
- 2:31Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, let's put it this way. It wasn't Giants
- 2:34Speaker 1: forty nine ers in the in nineteen ninety those two
- 2:37Speaker 1: games that they had, Yeah, seven three and fifteen thirteen.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Those were phenomenal games and they were physical and they
- 2:43Speaker 1: oh it was so much fun. Yeah, those back in
- 2:45Speaker 1: those days. But I digress. Look, you were asked on
- 2:49Speaker 1: Wednesday about you haven't really made much in the way
- 2:51Speaker 1: of changes lineup wise, because you haven't had to. Your
- 2:54Speaker 1: four lines are rolling well, your three defensive pairs are
- 2:57Speaker 1: doing a spectacular job. I mean, you've got good chemistry
- 3:01Speaker 1: going with the lines that you have right now.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Yeah, we do. And it's nice not to have to
- 3:05Speaker 2: keep juggling lines. And I think the players appreciate that too.
- 3:09Speaker 2: They are right now in a little bit of a rhythm,
- 3:13Speaker 2: you know, going out there playing with each other. So
- 3:17Speaker 2: and when you can trust all four lines, especially like
- 3:20Speaker 2: we have, you know, a lot of road games we
- 3:23Speaker 2: had played Northeastern was on the road. We got two
- 3:27Speaker 2: at Maine on the road. Then we're on the road
- 3:29Speaker 2: at BC yep, you know, and then we get them
- 3:32Speaker 2: at home. But then home and home where we have
- 3:35Speaker 2: home and home with U Mass and New Hampshire at
- 3:38Speaker 2: home and then on the road again. So you know,
- 3:41Speaker 2: it really helps because you don't get last change on
- 3:44Speaker 2: the road and when you have a lot of confidence
- 3:46Speaker 2: in your lines, you don't really care about matchups.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Yeah, and you mentioned, you know, home and away. It's
- 3:52Speaker 1: bizarre this year the home record hasn't been great, but
- 3:55Speaker 1: you guys have been dynamite on the road.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Yeah. What are we five hundred at home? Yeah?
- 3:59Speaker 1: I think just the game over five hundred.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I think, well, two thousand and eight we won a
- 4:04Speaker 2: national championship or the team that had a losing record
- 4:06Speaker 2: at home. So go figure, Yeah, go figure. I'd rather
- 4:09Speaker 2: be better in some ways, you're better off being better
- 4:12Speaker 2: on the road than you are at home. Uh Now,
- 4:15Speaker 2: I don't I say that a little bit tongue in cheek.
- 4:19Speaker 2: I don't know. We've got to play better at home. Yeah,
- 4:22Speaker 2: and some of that though, we've been playing fine at Tuscano.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I think we're two and one at People's Bank.
- 4:27Speaker 1: Hartford's been tough. Yeah, yeah, and you've got.
- 4:30Speaker 2: It with six four and six four and one at home.
- 4:33Speaker 1: Something like that.
- 4:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:34Speaker 1: Yeah. Colin wanted me to mention this nice hat. Dan
- 4:38Speaker 1: love that Whalers hat. Would you play BC? That's the
- 4:41Speaker 1: next home game that isn't Hartford. I hear like seven
- 4:43Speaker 1: thousand tickets around for that game.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Seven thousand, I like more than that.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Wow, that'd be phenomenal.
- 4:50Speaker 2: I heard only the upper bowl is available.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Wow, that's that's fantastic. Yeah, but it's like discounts like
- 4:58Speaker 1: on hot dogs and sodas and beers and all that too.
- 5:01Speaker 2: So tell all these people from the Travelers to get
- 5:03Speaker 2: some tickets for that game.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yukon tickets dot com. That's the website to go to.
- 5:07Speaker 1: We were talking about your senior line of Jake and
- 5:10Speaker 1: Tabor and Tristan. We've done that, ye, Jake, Tatz and
- 5:14Speaker 1: Muldowney speak for themselves too. But your other two lines, Carlin.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I love watching Carlin Dezagin. He's got a little bit
- 5:20Speaker 1: of an edge to him. Blaz has been good. Shahan
- 5:22Speaker 1: just skates like the win and then the two Ethans
- 5:25Speaker 1: in Murtag. I mean, we've talked about this, just the
- 5:28Speaker 1: surge of Murtag's kind of like the surge of Joey
- 5:31Speaker 1: in some different ways this year with Murtag as opposed
- 5:35Speaker 1: to Joey not him, I'm doing Joey went on and
- 5:36Speaker 1: scored almost thirty goals last year, but Murtag, man, he
- 5:39Speaker 1: has been sensational with the two ethans he is.
- 5:41Speaker 2: He's he's probably not gonna you know, hello, he's doing
- 5:48Speaker 2: what is he third or fourth on our team in points,
- 5:50Speaker 2: But he's not gonna usually produce the number of goals
- 5:55Speaker 2: that say Joey Muldowney's gonna do, but well throughout of
- 5:59Speaker 2: course of a sea And however, he brings so many
- 6:02Speaker 2: other intangibles to our team into the game. He's just
- 6:08Speaker 2: really really physical. He skates so well, he takes a
- 6:12Speaker 2: puck to the net. You know, he's fearless. He's becoming
- 6:17Speaker 2: a pretty effective penalty killer for us as well. So
- 6:22Speaker 2: I've been like, and we've talked about it a lot, Bob,
- 6:26Speaker 2: I'm not surprised. I thought he was a really good
- 6:28Speaker 2: player last year, you know, and just like I think,
- 6:32Speaker 2: you know, Joey o'doniac and Cardi spurl who we just
- 6:35Speaker 2: picked up, are really good players. They're good players. We
- 6:40Speaker 2: just we have a good team and it's hard to
- 6:44Speaker 2: crack that lineup sometimes. But they won't surprise me if
- 6:49Speaker 2: they step in next year and be very effective players.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Right And the two Ethans, especially guard Dula is starting
- 6:54Speaker 1: to generate more offense. He's in a little bit of
- 6:56Speaker 1: a hot streak right now. And then Joey, I mean,
- 6:59Speaker 1: Joey's an a good frame of mind. I mean playing
- 7:01Speaker 1: with Jake and Ryan speak for themselves. But what do
- 7:04Speaker 1: you see differently, say, second half of the season. I
- 7:06Speaker 1: mean you use the old Jerry yorkism when you get
- 7:10Speaker 1: to the second half of the season, it's big boy hockey.
- 7:13Speaker 1: Do you sense that now? With Ben's league, men's league,
- 7:15Speaker 1: men's league, But big boy hockey took today.
- 7:18Speaker 2: He is going to be on between the first and
- 7:19Speaker 2: second period on the bean pot tonight?
- 7:22Speaker 1: Oh nice? Yeah, isn't he dropping the puck to night?
- 7:25Speaker 1: I think Parker, Yeah, we will get into that a
- 7:28Speaker 1: little bit. But do you sense that like with the veterans, like, hey,
- 7:31Speaker 1: you know, second half of the season, chance to win
- 7:33Speaker 1: Hockey East, chance to place high. Do you just get
- 7:36Speaker 1: a sense of that from the from the veterans, that
- 7:38Speaker 1: it's time to raise your game a little bit. Yeah.
- 7:41Speaker 2: I just think that's natural I do. To answer your question, yes,
- 7:45Speaker 2: I think they understand that. And our schedule. To me,
- 7:50Speaker 2: some people were saying that, Wow, you got a really
- 7:53Speaker 2: tough schedule. It couldn't be any better. I think this
- 7:56Speaker 2: is fantastic to have these types of games down the stretch.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Nothing is going to prepare you better for the playoffs
- 8:05Speaker 2: than playing two at Maine and home and home with BC,
- 8:08Speaker 2: and home and home with you Mass and having to
- 8:10Speaker 2: go to Providence your last game of the year. It's awesome.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I think it's exactly what you want. I don't want
- 8:17Speaker 2: to be playing games against the fifty fifth ranked team
- 8:21Speaker 2: late in the season. It's I don't know how much
- 8:24Speaker 2: that helps you. These games are going to really our
- 8:27Speaker 2: team is going to grow from these games. They sure are.
- 8:30Speaker 1: And you look at the Hockey East standings. Providence is
- 8:33Speaker 1: starting to distance themselves a little bit. They've opened up
- 8:35Speaker 1: an eight point lead on on Yukon and BC. Granted
- 8:39Speaker 1: both teams have a game in hand. U Mass is fourth,
- 8:41Speaker 1: but Boy third to seventh to eighth. I mean it's
- 8:45Speaker 1: a fine line hockey, it is. Playoffs could be very
- 8:48Speaker 1: interesting this March.
- 8:49Speaker 2: They are. Our goal is to stay within three points
- 8:51Speaker 2: of Providence. If we can do that, that's going to
- 8:53Speaker 2: make that last game of the year really interesting. So
- 8:56Speaker 2: that's our goal right now, is to try to stay
- 8:58Speaker 2: within You know, we have a game in hand on them,
- 9:00Speaker 2: and I know they have an eight point lead, but
- 9:03Speaker 2: if we can hold our end of the bargain, it
- 9:06Speaker 2: would be nice to stay within three points of them.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll take a break. We'll come back first a
- 9:10Speaker 1: trip to Orno, Maine, which is always fun, man, and
- 9:13Speaker 1: that place is loud and exciting and thankfully you won't
- 9:17Speaker 1: have any snow to deal with. It'll be cold, but hopefully,
- 9:19Speaker 1: hopefully we'll come back with Mike Kavanaugh. We're live at
- 9:22Speaker 1: Bear Smokehouse Barbecue. It's the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show. We're
- 9:24Speaker 1: back in a minute here on Learfield.
- 9:26Speaker 2: To stay with us.
