- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Tuesday.
- 0:15It's the 7th of October. Good to have your company as we
- 0:19are going to open up our Bibles to this fantastic book of Romans
- 0:24and keep on reading. We were having a conversation
- 0:27around the dinner table last week and one of my boys was
- 0:30saying, oh, isn't it cool the way that Paul has just got such
- 0:34a fantastic knowledge of the Old Testament.
- 0:36He can keep on pulling out quote after quote after quote and it
- 0:40just really kind of informs and shapes the way that he's able to
- 0:43present the gospel. So we have decided, yeah, there
- 0:46are certainly benefits to having a Pharisaical knowledge of the
- 0:50Old Testament. So those Pharisees, they knew
- 0:53their stuff, right? Wow.
- 0:54So when we read this, we read Paul with this fantastic
- 0:58knowledge of the Old Testament and drawing out these signs from
- 1:02long ago of Jesus to come and using them as these wonderful
- 1:07explanations as to what Jesus has actually done for us and how
- 1:11we get to live. So without further ado, shall we
- 1:15dive in and read more about this amazing story?
- 1:18Yeah, let's do that. As we read together Romans
- 1:21chapter 4, Abraham was, humanly speaking,
- 1:35the founder of our Jewish nation.
- 1:37What did he discover about being made right with God?
- 1:41If his good deeds made him acceptable to God, he would have
- 1:45had something to boast about. But that was not God's way.
- 1:49For the Scriptures tell us Abraham believed in God, and God
- 1:54counted him as righteous because of his faith.
- 2:00When people work, their wages are not a gift, but something
- 2:03they've earned. But people are counted as
- 2:06righteous not because of their work, but because of their faith
- 2:10in God who forgive sinners. David also spoke of this when he
- 2:15described the happiness of those who are declared righteous
- 2:18without working for it. Oh, what joy for those whose
- 2:22disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight.
- 2:27Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of
- 2:32sin. Now, is this blessing only for
- 2:37the Jews, or is it also for uncircumcised Gentiles?
- 2:41Well, we've been saying that Abraham was counted as righteous
- 2:45by God because of his faith. But how did this happen?
- 2:49Was he counted as righteous only after he was circumcised, or was
- 2:53it before he was circumcised? Clearly, God accepted Abraham
- 2:58before he was circumcised. Circumcised was a sign that
- 3:02Abraham already had faith and that God had already accepted
- 3:06him and declared him to be righteous even before he was
- 3:10circumcised. So Abraham is the spiritual
- 3:13father of those who have faith but have not been circumcised.
- 3:18They are counted as righteous because of their faith.
- 3:22And Abraham is also the spiritual father of those who
- 3:25have been circumcised, but only if they have the same kind of
- 3:30faith Abraham had before he was circumcised.
- 3:34Clearly, God's promise to give the whole earth to Abraham and
- 3:38his descendants was based not on his obedience to God's law, but
- 3:43on a right relationship with God that comes by faith.
- 3:48If God's promise is only for those who obey the law, then
- 3:52faith is not necessary and the promise is pointless, for the
- 3:56law always brings punishment on those who try to obey it.
- 4:00The only way to avoid breaking the law is to have no law to
- 4:03break. So the promise is received by
- 4:07faith. It is given as a free gift, and
- 4:11we are all certain to receive it whether or not we live according
- 4:14to the law of Moses, if we have faith like Abraham's.
- 4:19For Abraham is the father of all who believe.
- 4:22That is what the Scriptures mean when God told him, I have made
- 4:27you the father of many nations. This happened because Abraham
- 4:32believed in the God who brings the dead back to life and who
- 4:36creates new things out of nothing.
- 4:40Even when there was no reason for hope, Abraham kept hoping,
- 4:45believing that he would become the father of many nations.
- 4:49For God had said to him, that's how many descendants you will
- 4:53have. And Abraham's faith did not
- 4:56weaken, even though at about 100 years of age he figured his body
- 5:01was as good as dead, and so was Sarah's womb.
- 5:05Abraham never wavered in believing God's promise.
- 5:08In fact, his faith grew stronger.
- 5:11And in this he brought glory to God.
- 5:15He was fully convinced that God was able to do whatever he
- 5:19promises. And because of Abraham's faith,
- 5:22God counted him as righteous. And when God counted him as
- 5:27righteous, it wasn't just for Abraham's benefit, it was
- 5:31recorded for our benefit too, assuring us that God would also
- 5:37count us as righteous if we believe in Him.
- 5:40The one who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead.
- 5:45He was handed over to die because of our sins, and He was
- 5:49raised to life to make us right with God.
- 6:03Oh God, thank you for your law. Thank you that we have this set
- 6:09of ways that we are to live by, but that when we attempt to live
- 6:14by it, we just cannot do it. And so the Lord just turns us to
- 6:20Jesus, turns us to you, Lord, and says, it's only through you
- 6:25that we can ever be made right. We just can't do it on our own.
- 6:31So the law like this mirror shows us that we are broken, but
- 6:37that you, you make us right. So help us just put all our eggs
- 6:44in your basket. I know that's against the wisdom
- 6:47of this world that says don't do that.
- 6:49But we just, we just give our lives to you wholeheartedly.
- 6:53Lord, we thank you that it's through you that we are made
- 6:57right with God. It's through our relationship
- 6:59with you that we are able to be part of your family and receive
- 7:05the incredible blessings that you have for us.
- 7:09Blessings of peace now, of knowledge of all that you've
- 7:13done for us now, and life with you and eternity.
- 7:19You are a good, good God and we love you and we are grateful for
- 7:24all that you've done for us and all that you are as loving,
- 7:28forgiving, and merciful and kind.
- 7:30God S we pray all of this in your name, Amen.
