- 0:05Speaker 1: I'm Zach Power in the news. This is not a debate.
- 0:08Speaker 2: This is a sales pitch selling the unsellable, Mr.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Speaker.
- 0:11Speaker 1: That's exactly what this is. The MHA for Lake Melville
- 0:15Speaker 1: rose in the House of Assembly today, roundly condemning the
- 0:17Speaker 1: latest agreement with Quebec on Churchill Falls, outlining the reasons
- 0:21Speaker 1: why he quit caucus and why he'll be voting against
- 0:23Speaker 1: the deal. Keith Russell dropped a political bombshell just as
- 0:27Speaker 1: the debate in the House of Assembly was just about
- 0:29Speaker 1: to get underway on Monday, crossing the floor to sit
- 0:32Speaker 1: as an independent. Today he had his opportunity to explain
- 0:35Speaker 1: his reasons behind that decision, referencing the way in which
- 0:38Speaker 1: the provincial government has treated the Innu Nation in a
- 0:40Speaker 1: recent dispute over their historic presence in Labrador.
- 0:43Speaker 2: We have to talk about this project being on Innu land,
- 0:46Speaker 2: and Innu nations should be respected during this process, and
- 0:49Speaker 2: they have not been, and I can say that this
- 0:51Speaker 2: government has given them the ultimate disrespect and challenging their
- 0:54Speaker 2: identity and their history in Labrador, Mr.
- 0:56Speaker 3: Speaker.
- 0:57Speaker 1: It all comes as the Premier says there's no doubt
- 1:00Speaker 1: in his mind that the hydro deal will pass through
- 1:02Speaker 1: the House of Assembly tonight. Tony Wakeham says the PC
- 1:04Speaker 1: caucus is united in support of the agreement between Quebec
- 1:08Speaker 1: and Newfoundland and Labrador. He claims the current version is
- 1:11Speaker 1: better than the one that was scrapped, which was signed
- 1:14Speaker 1: in 2024.
- 1:14Speaker 3: Let me just ask one more thing to that. You know,
- 1:18Speaker 3: you have a federal government here. The Prime Minister of
- 1:21Speaker 3: the country has a plan to build Canada.
- 1:24Speaker 4: Strong.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Talks about the need for electrification. Talks about the need
- 1:28Speaker 3: to build energy quarters. And the Liberal members in the
- 1:31Speaker 3: House of Assembly are prepared to walk away from that.
- 1:35Speaker 1: Batten down the hatches, an intense low-pressure system will bring
- 1:38Speaker 1: strong northwesterly winds to parts of the eastern portion of
- 1:40Speaker 1: the island on Saturday. Environment Canada meteorologist Ian Hubbard says
- 1:44Speaker 1: the slow-moving system will start to intensify as it moves
- 1:48Speaker 1: across the island early Saturday morning. A special weather statement
- 1:51Speaker 1: has been issued for many areas of the province.
- 1:54Speaker 4: Those winds are going to pick up from the northwest
- 1:57Speaker 4: starting during the overnight hours Friday night into early Saturday
- 2:00Speaker 4: morning and persist for part of the day on Saturday
- 2:03Speaker 4: giving some pretty strong gusts with probably the highest gusts
- 2:08Speaker 4: right now we're looking at maybe 100 to 110 kilometers
- 2:11Speaker 4: per hour for parts of the East Coast and the
- 2:13Speaker 4: Northeast Coast.
- 2:15Speaker 1: That special weather statement issued for the Avalon, Northeast Coast, Clarenville,
- 2:19Speaker 1: parts of St. John's as well. And finally, the RNC
- 2:22Speaker 1: has increased patrols and is gathering more information as it
- 2:25Speaker 1: investigates a reported assault in the Kilbride area. VOCM's Linda
- 2:29Speaker 1: Swain has more.
- 2:30Speaker 5: RNC say operational patrols, police dogs, a drone operator, forensic
- 2:34Speaker 5: services and the criminal investigation division were sent to Kilbride
- 2:38Speaker 5: to conduct an investigation. A search for what was described
- 2:41Speaker 5: as a male suspect was unsuccessful, according to police. Investigators
- 2:45Speaker 5: are offering their support to the complainant and are gathering
- 2:47Speaker 5: information to determine the events of that night. Police have
- 2:50Speaker 5: increased patrols in the area and officers are canvassing the
- 2:53Speaker 5: neighbourhood for information or video footage. RNC say there is
- 2:57Speaker 5: no general risk to public safety, but they ask people
- 3:00Speaker 5: to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings as a precaution.
- 3:04Speaker 5: Anyone with information is asked to contact the RNC. Linda Swain, VOCM,
- 3:09Speaker 5: Local News Now.
- 3:10Speaker 1: And that's your news. I'm Zach Power.
