- 0:04This is Living Waters of Grace, the teaching ministry of Lewis
- 0:08Harold, assistant pastor of Calvary Chapel of Westmoreland
- 0:12County in Greensburg, PA. Now here's Pastor Lewis as he
- 0:16continues teaching through God's Word.
- 0:37If you were going for a cheap, kind of slutty, inviting look,
- 0:45you nailed it. That was the way he addressed
- 0:48it. Didn't have to say another word,
- 0:51didn't have to say another word. Never accused her of anything,
- 0:55just basically gave a man's opinion of what she looked like.
- 1:00That's all. And I think as fathers we should
- 1:03do that. We should give our opinion.
- 1:05We understand how the male mind works and we have to impart that
- 1:10to our kids. We joined Pastor Lewis in the
- 1:13middle of a recounting of a story of a father talking with
- 1:17his daughter about some immodest clothing choices that she was
- 1:22making. Well, this kind of talk might be
- 1:24antiquated. We know as fathers that God has
- 1:28called us to speak the truth in love to our children.
- 1:31Now we must season these times of truthful speaking with the
- 1:36love of God. When our children know that we
- 1:38love them, we can say some of the most difficult things in the
- 1:42world to them. Now here's Pastor Lewis in the
- 1:45Book of First Timothy, chapter 2, with today's edition of
- 1:49Living Waters of Grace. I heard one teacher say that,
- 1:53you know, in the church now, there's more announcements and
- 1:57things of that nature than there is prayer.
- 2:00And we really need to focus on prayer.
- 2:02I'm glad that we have so many avenues here in this church that
- 2:06offer prayer. So many, so many.
- 2:11And you can all plug yourselves into it.
- 2:13We invite you to plug yourselves into those avenues.
- 2:16A prayer because every one of those groups, whether it's a
- 2:20Thursday night Zoom group or whether it's the Thursday night
- 2:23group that meets here to pray about certain things.
- 2:28The all of the Bible studies that should include prayer.
- 2:32I'm sure it does. When those things happen, that
- 2:35is all in worship to God. It's all in worship to God.
- 2:42So we pray because he died for all and his death was sufficient
- 2:48for all, but it's only efficient for those who believe, for those
- 2:56who believe. And then he goes to verse 8.
- 3:00And as we move to verse 8, we come to see now that we're now
- 3:04moving into an issue which is seen as being controversial, but
- 3:10it's not really controversial. If it is rightly divided, it's
- 3:17not really controversial. The world makes things
- 3:20controversial, but it's the word of God.
- 3:24It's the word of God. And before we even go there, I
- 3:27just want to go to second Timothy real quick.
- 3:30Chapter 3, Second Timothy chapter 3, we're going to just
- 3:33look at verse. Just going to read for verse 16.
- 3:37All Scripture, not some, not parts of it.
- 3:43All Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is
- 3:48profitable for doctrine and for reproof, for correction, for
- 3:53instruction and righteousness. We just talked about that, that
- 3:59the man of God or the woman of God may be complete, thoroughly
- 4:03equipped for every good work. So what we're about to go in
- 4:08here into here, this is not Paul's opinion.
- 4:15This is not just Paul's opinion. All scripture is inspired by
- 4:20God. It's in the Canon of Scripture.
- 4:23This is coming from God. So he, she, he says here in
- 4:30verse 8, I desire therefore that the men pray everywhere, lifting
- 4:38up holy hands without wrath and doubting.
- 4:42Let's stop there, he said. I desire, therefore, that the
- 4:47men pray everywhere. Now he's talking about not just
- 4:51mankind, meaning everybody. He's talking about men as in
- 4:55male gender, that they pray. And Paul is saying here that men
- 5:01should lead prayer in public services.
- 5:06Men should lead prayer. I know growing up I didn't see a
- 5:10lot of men leading prayer in public services.
- 5:12It was mostly in women. I just see a lot of men leading
- 5:15it. But Paul says here that men
- 5:18should lead prayer. We know women will pray, but
- 5:24Paul's saying we want to see more men praying.
- 5:26Men pray leading. And now this is not a
- 5:29prohibition to say that women shouldn't pray in public.
- 5:33That's not what this is saying. And we want to get to that over
- 5:36in verse 9. But here he is making a point to
- 5:39say that men should be praying and should be leading and
- 5:43praying in public services, lifting up holy hands without
- 5:49wrath and doubting. So Paul's mentioned in three,
- 5:52three things that are essential. And we know with men praying in
- 5:57public, three things. First of all, he says lifting up
- 6:00holy hands and lifting up holy hands is actually cultural.
- 6:05It's Jewish culture that the men at that particular time when
- 6:09they prayed, they would pray extending their hands to heaven.
- 6:15Now that gesture of extending the hands of heaven, when you
- 6:17look at it, it really has a lot of different meaning or
- 6:21connotations to it. First of all, it's the
- 6:23connotation of surrender. It's surrender when a man lifts
- 6:29his hands, when a police officer tells a suspect to come out with
- 6:33your hands up, that means you are surrendering, that that
- 6:36person is surrendering to the authority of that police
- 6:40officer. He's surrendering.
- 6:42He is putting himself into custody, willingly putting
- 6:46himself into custody of that police officer.
- 6:49And that's exactly what we're doing when we lift our hands to
- 6:52the Lord. Back in the Old Testament, this
- 6:54was a sign of surrender to God. God, I surrender, I place myself
- 7:00under your authority. So the prayers that go up are
- 7:05prayers to the Lord submitting to his authority.
- 7:12And there's several scriptures that talk about the lifting of
- 7:15the hands. Turn with me really quick to
- 7:17Psalm 63 and look at verse four. He says thus I will bless you
- 7:24while I live. I will lift up my hands in your
- 7:28name and then go to Psalm 134 and Psalm 134 reads this way.
- 7:34Lift up your hands in the sanctuary and bless the Lord.
- 7:39And we know we read the story back in First Kings chapter 8
- 7:43and 22 that when Solomon prayed and he dedicated to temple, he
- 7:49lifted up his hands to heaven that he prayed.
- 7:55When David prayed several times it's mentioned that he lifted up
- 7:59his hands to the Lord when he prayed.
- 8:02So that is a, it's a cultural position.
- 8:05But I just want to mention that we need to understand the
- 8:08lifting of the hands. It's an outward expression of
- 8:12where our hearts should be. It's not that important what we
- 8:17do with our hands. Now, God is more interested in
- 8:20the position of your heart when we pray.
- 8:24And then he goes in and he goes into that.
- 8:27So he says without wrath and without wrath means that it's,
- 8:31you know, you first of all, you, you, the hands that you're
- 8:33lifting up have to be holy hands.
- 8:35So it's got to be pure hands, right?
- 8:37Hands that we, we're not talking about, you know, practicing sin
- 8:40and then coming up and lifting your hands to pray.
- 8:43You know, that doesn't mean that if you have sin that you can't
- 8:47pray, you repent. And the repentance cleanses us.
- 8:52We confess, and that cleanses us before God and we can lift up
- 8:56our hands and pray. It's about lifting up cleansed
- 8:59hands. That means the heart is cleansed
- 9:01from whatever sin is morally or spiritually cleansed.
- 9:04But it's without wrath. And without wrath simply means
- 9:07without anger. It's without resentment.
- 9:11We should be praying without resentment.
- 9:12I shouldn't be up here praying and knowing I got something
- 9:15against that brother sitting back there or something against
- 9:19a sister sitting over there. Can't pray like that.
- 9:23I got to go make it right with them first.
- 9:26I got to go make it right with them and then I can pray.
- 9:30I don't want my prayers hindered by having all these ungodly
- 9:33things in my heart towards someone else, have an ought in
- 9:36my heart against a brother. I can't pray that way, Davis
- 9:42said. If I regard iniquity in my
- 9:44heart, he won't hear me. God won't hear me.
- 9:49So we have to have pure hearts and clean hands when we pray.
- 9:54And he said, and doubting, doubting actually means that we
- 9:57must pray in faith. We shouldn't be praying
- 9:59doubting. James said that when you pray,
- 10:02you know you, you, you should be praying without doubting.
- 10:05You ask without doubting. He said he who doubts is like a
- 10:09wave of the sea tossed to and fro by the wind.
- 10:12It it's an unstable person who doubts.
- 10:14When we pray, we pray believing. We pray believing, so we pray
- 10:21without doubt. So then we go on to verse 9.
- 10:25And this is where things get kind of interesting because he
- 10:28says here in like manner also, and don't miss that line, in
- 10:34like manner also, in like manner also, women adorn themselves in
- 10:39modest apparel with propriety and moderation, not with braided
- 10:45hair or gold or pearls or costly clothing.
- 10:48So what is he saying here? This is actually evidence to
- 10:53some degree that women can pray in public.
- 10:58It's fine for women to pray in public because he said in like
- 11:00manner. Also, in other words, in the
- 11:03same way, when women pray, their praying should be with, you
- 11:08know, adorning themselves in modest apparel.
- 11:11Men should pray with their hearts, not having wickedness or
- 11:16anger or art in their hearts. He emphasized that for men, not
- 11:19that anybody should, but that's what he emphasized for men.
- 11:23And but for women, he said when you pray, if you want to, you
- 11:26know, when you pray, have modest apparel, have modest clothes on.
- 11:31Now, let's not know we, we don't have to exaggerate this and
- 11:35think that this means that a woman can never wear braided
- 11:37hair or never have gold or pearls on or wear nice clothes.
- 11:41That's not what Paul is saying here.
- 11:43What he is saying is that when we pray before the people that
- 11:47the women should be dressed in a way that God is being glorified
- 11:53and not someone looking at what they're wearing.
- 11:58It should be tasteful clothing. And, and, and I thank God that
- 12:02we don't have that issue here. We don't have the issue of a, we
- 12:08don't have a clothing issue here.
- 12:10We don't have people coming in here dressing worldly.
- 12:15I, I, I just don't see that here.
- 12:18But what Paul is saying is that women should be dressing in ways
- 12:23that professes godliness, a way that shows that you are godly.
- 12:29So he says here, first of all, it should be modest apparel and
- 12:32that emphasizes appropriate dress.
- 12:35You know, you have. We have to help men to be
- 12:37focused on the right thing because men are visual.
- 12:43We're very visual and our and, and, and we notice things very
- 12:47quickly. So women, you dress in ways that
- 12:51doesn't call attention to anything negative, Then we don't
- 12:55worry about that. It it, it's, it's tasteful
- 12:58dressing. And, and so Paul is saying just
- 13:01dress in a way that's, that's tasteful.
- 13:03And then it says that the word propriety that means in or
- 13:07shamefacedness, that means that you're, you're, you're dressing
- 13:10in a way that's giving reverence and respect to God.
- 13:16And then the word moderation and that means that you're dressing,
- 13:19you're using sound judgment and inner self-control.
- 13:23When you dress sound judgment and inner self-control with
- 13:32moderation, it should be a spiritual radar on the inside of
- 13:36you that tells you what is good and proper dress, what is good
- 13:40and proper dress before we leave home.
- 13:43We all have mirrors before we leave home.
- 13:45You know, am I dressed appropriately now?
- 13:49I have that. You know, when we're, you know,
- 13:50when kids are younger mothers and fathers, we have to help our
- 13:54teenage daughters with that help, assist.
- 14:00We have to have feedback for our teenage daughters.
- 14:06And part of the reason why is because society is putting out
- 14:09clothes. I mean, almost forcing young
- 14:11people to dress in ways that's not godly, almost forces them to
- 14:15they're like, what's the options out there?
- 14:17What can you buy and where can you buy it that's appropriate.
- 14:22But I think that, you know, but we have to, but we have to give
- 14:25assistance to our young teenage girls when it comes to dressing.
- 14:30Told me before I worked in pharmaceuticals and, and I was
- 14:33in an office waiting to see a doctor and there was another
- 14:36pharmaceutical Rep in there from another company.
- 14:39And she came in and she, we're sitting down talking.
- 14:41I knew that she was saved and we were talking about the things of
- 14:44the Lord and some kind of way the discussion got on clothing,
- 14:48appropriate clothing. She has a, you know, she was
- 14:50dealing with a teenage issue with her 14 year old daughter
- 14:56and her daughter came downstairs one day.
- 14:58Well, her daughter came downstairs.
- 14:59They asked her mother and father if she can go to the mall with
- 15:01some friends. And of course, you know, they
- 15:03trusted her and they trusted her friends.
- 15:04So they said sure, yeah, absolutely.
- 15:07So she went upstairs to get dressed.
- 15:09And when she came downstairs, they both had a strange look on
- 15:13their face, very surprised look on their face.
- 15:18And the teenage daughter looked at him and like, what?
- 15:20What's wrong? What, what, what, what's wrong?
- 15:22You know, he's how do I look? And the father, not the mother,
- 15:28the father, he said, well, what were you shooting for when you
- 15:36got dressed? Let me ask you that.
- 15:39What were you going for? If you were going for a academic
- 15:45look, if you were going for a studious look, you missed it.
- 15:57If you were going for a cheap, kind of slutty, inviting look,
- 16:05you nailed it. That was the way he addressed
- 16:09it. Didn't have to say another word,
- 16:11didn't have to say another word. Never accused her of anything.
- 16:15Just basically gave a man's opinion of what she looked like.
- 16:21That's all. And I think as fathers, we
- 16:24should do that. We should give our opinion.
- 16:26We understand how the male mind works and we have to impart that
- 16:31to our kids because a lot of 14 year olds really don't realize
- 16:35that they're dressing in that way because that's just the
- 16:38styles that's out there. They see it all over the place.
- 16:41But godliness is something different.
- 16:42Now, the reason why he mentioned this, the braiding of the hair
- 16:47and the gold and the perils. Again, remember, as we said at
- 16:50the top of this, this is Ephesus, the city of Ephesus.
- 16:55There was a lot of worldliness in the city of Ephesus and in
- 17:00the temples they had temple prostitutes.
- 17:03These women dressed in ways to try to attract attention to
- 17:06themselves. So they would put on these kind
- 17:09of things, the braiding of their hair and put glitter in their
- 17:11hair and, and, and, and, and they would, and they would have
- 17:14the jewelry on and all the things that would attract
- 17:17attention to themselves so that they can, you know, do their
- 17:21business. But Paul is saying when you
- 17:26dress there should be a difference.
- 17:29People should be able to see a difference that you are not one
- 17:33of these women. You know that that that's
- 17:36working in the temple, but that you are a woman professing
- 17:39godliness. And that's what he's saying here
- 17:43in verse 10. But that which is proper for
- 17:47women professing godliness with good works.
- 17:50In other words, if you're going to dress, cover yourself in
- 17:54something, cover yourself with the good works.
- 17:56Let people see that. Let that be what you adorn
- 18:00yourself with, not the showing of flesh.
- 18:06And then in verse 11, he says let a woman learn in silence
- 18:11with all submission. And verse 12 says, and I do not
- 18:14permit a woman to teach or have authority over a man, but to be
- 18:18in silence. OK, let's stop there now He says
- 18:20let a woman learn in silence. Again, keep in mind that at that
- 18:24particular time, you know, he was given instruction in church
- 18:28about church order. And he was trying to help them
- 18:31to understand what is proper order and what is out of order.
- 18:34And apparently whatever was happening here.
- 18:36And he also mentioned this and to a letter, in a letter to the
- 18:41Corinthians as well, when he said that, look, these women
- 18:44need to learn how to be quiet during the service.
- 18:48These are women. And you got to remember, they
- 18:49sit apart. You know, the men sit on one
- 18:52side, women sit on the other side.
- 18:54You know, so if they're women, they have a question.
- 18:56They just thought it was OK to just, you know, hey, excuse me,
- 19:00you know, what does that mean? Or or holler to her husband
- 19:03that's sitting on the other side of the room.
- 19:04Hey, John, what is he talking about?
- 19:08This is joint service. Obviously that would be
- 19:10disruptive and Paul's addressing that they can learn, but learn
- 19:14in silence. Learn in silence.
- 19:17In fact, in First Corinthians, in First Corinthians 1434, I
- 19:24think he says let's let's turn it real quick, First Corinthians
- 19:26chapter 14 and 34. And he said, let your women keep
- 19:32silence in the churches for they are not permitted to speak, but
- 19:36they are to be submissive as the law also says.
- 19:41And if they want to learn something, let them ask their
- 19:43own husbands at home for the shameful for a woman to speak in
- 19:48church. That doesn't mean that women
- 19:49have to totally keep their mouth shut.
- 19:51But join the service. You know, he's saying don't be
- 19:54disruptive. It's a shame for women to be
- 19:56disruptive in service and to interfere or interrupt with the
- 19:59flow of the Spirit as the word of God is going forth.
- 20:03That is, that's disturbing it, it's disruptive.
- 20:06So that's what Paul's talking about that not saying that women
- 20:09can't talk in church. That's not what it's saying.
- 20:13Join the service. Be respectful.
- 20:16And these are things that obviously we understand because
- 20:19we grew up in the church. But this is Ephesus.
- 20:20They didn't have this kind of order initially.
- 20:23They weren't used to this. So that's why Paul gave the
- 20:25instruction. And even now sometimes it's
- 20:27appropriate to give that instruction because from time to
- 20:30time you might see someone that may not have a lot of experience
- 20:33in church who could be disruptive.
- 20:36And then in verse 12 it says, now I do not permit a woman to
- 20:38teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.
- 20:43And again, does that mean that women can never teach in the
- 20:47church? No, what it means is that in a
- 20:50mixed congregation like this, a woman should not be the teacher.
- 20:54A man should teach the doctrine of Jesus Christ.
- 20:59We are taught in Titus chapter 2, verses 3 and four that women
- 21:04or the older women are to teach the younger women.
- 21:08That's where women teach women teach women, women teach men,
- 21:13not stand up in a congregation like this and teach men because
- 21:17when because the Bible says that we are under the authority.
- 21:22A woman is under the authority of a man.
- 21:26Man is over woman, Christ is over man, and God is over
- 21:30Christ. So women are under the authority
- 21:34of the men here in the church, the pastors or the teachers,
- 21:38because once someone is teaching, we're under that
- 21:41authority. We're under that authority, and
- 21:43women should not be placed in that position.
- 21:46That's just positioning. We're not talking about ability,
- 21:49OK? We're not talking about ability.
- 21:51Can women teach? Absolutely.
- 21:52They're capable of teaching. We're not talking about ability.
- 21:56We're talking about church order is what he's calling church
- 22:00order. This is what's appropriate in
- 22:02the church, and I do not permit a woman to teach or have
- 22:06authority over a man, but to be in silence.
- 22:10Verse 13, Now he gives his reason, a reason for saying that
- 22:14in verse 13 he says Adam was formed first, then Eve.
- 22:18So it's the order of creation that he goes back to.
- 22:21He refers to the order of creation.
- 22:23Adam was first, the man was first, and then Eve.
- 22:27Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived fell into
- 22:32transgression. So what is he saying here?
- 22:34What he's saying? He's not saying that Adam wasn't
- 22:36wrong. He's not saying that Adam wasn't
- 22:39wrong. He's not saying that Adam's sin
- 22:41was any less than Eve's sin. But what he is saying is that
- 22:44Adam's sin wide with his eyes wide open because he had the
- 22:47law. He had the instruction.
- 22:51He just went and followed his wife who had overstepped him and
- 22:57made a independent decision. And because of that, sin came
- 23:03into the world. So he says Adam was first.
- 23:07That's the order of creation. So then he goes on and he says
- 23:12it was a woman that fell into transgression.
- 23:16So women can teach, but they should teach.
- 23:20Women should teach women. Older women should teach the
- 23:22younger women, teach them how to love their husbands, how to love
- 23:26their children. We need that.
- 23:29We need that. Is that any less important or
- 23:33significant than what Clark or I or anybody else that stands up
- 23:37here does? Absolutely not.
- 23:41It's important when women teach other women how to be godly
- 23:47women. That is important.
- 23:50It's significant, very important.
- 23:57Here on Living Waters of Grace, we're in the books of First and
- 24:00Second Timothy. Pastor Lewis Harrell is walking
- 24:04us through these letters written from Paul to Timothy.
- 24:07Toward the end of these letters, Paul is anticipating that his
- 24:10time here on earth is coming to a close.
- 24:13He's giving some final words of advice to his mentee.
- 24:17Paul writes in Second Timothy 4, verse seven.
- 24:20I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have
- 24:23kept the faith. Wherever you are in your journey
- 24:27of faith with God, our hope is that you have the willingness to
- 24:31fight for what's true, not compromising, but holding fast
- 24:36to the Word of God. Paul was reminding Timothy of
- 24:39this. And it's a good reminder for you
- 24:42and for me today, too. For helpful input throughout
