Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart
- 0:07Speaker 1: Podcasts Episode.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Number seventy five that cannot be right tow Are You kidding?
- 0:25Speaker 1: Member Cruising ahead here in NHL Unscripted, our special guest
- 0:28Speaker 1: host Nate Thompson is still along for the ride as
- 0:30Speaker 1: far as our guests. This week, Kevin weekspan as this
- 0:32Speaker 1: guy got stories. He played under John Tortorella in Tampa,
- 0:35Speaker 1: so gotta ask him his theories to put his hiring
- 0:37Speaker 1: means in Vegas.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Plus the inside outcame caming up in ESPN. Canna be
- 0:41Speaker 2: very very cool. Look forward to that.
- 0:42Speaker 1: In the meantime, though, we kicked things off with what
- 0:44Speaker 1: was a rather exciting game for the Colorado Avalanche. The
- 0:48Speaker 1: last time I was there Fellaws just two weeks ago,
- 0:49Speaker 1: the Penguins wed him seven to two. This time, the
- 0:52Speaker 1: Avalanche come back nine to two and absolutely hammered this
- 0:56Speaker 1: Calgary Flames team which is rebuilding in fairness and was
- 0:59Speaker 1: expecting really to compete.
- 1:00Speaker 3: JD.
- 1:00Speaker 1: I was trying to be a contrarian a couple of
- 1:02Speaker 1: weeks ago and saying, hey, what if this Avalanche team
- 1:04Speaker 1: relinquishes the top spot to Dallas and then you know
- 1:07Speaker 1: the Apps could lose the Wild and seven. Now after
- 1:09Speaker 1: watching them up clast and personal, clearly the Avalanche beat
- 1:12Speaker 1: Dallas Stars a couple weeks ago, that big head to
- 1:14Speaker 1: head game, it looks like the Aps are still the
- 1:15Speaker 1: tune to beat. And I gotta tell you, I didn't
- 1:17Speaker 1: think i'd been an NHL game this season see a
- 1:19Speaker 1: team put up double digits, but I almost saw it
- 1:21Speaker 1: nine to two.
- 1:22Speaker 2: The Avalanche are for real.
- 1:27Speaker 4: They're just I think they they accrued a little bit
- 1:31Speaker 4: too many injuries. They're two three weeks ago and hide everybody. Yeah,
- 1:36Speaker 4: I just think it's it's they are the team to beat.
- 1:40Speaker 4: Dallas has kind of looked a little bit better with
- 1:42Speaker 4: ranting in back and you know, I still think that
- 1:45Speaker 4: Central is gonna be an absolute shit show to come
- 1:47Speaker 4: out of it. But man, he's just they have too
- 1:50Speaker 4: much center depth, They've too many, too much on the
- 1:53Speaker 4: back end. Now, you know, I saw the news on
- 1:56Speaker 4: my car that he got hurt in that game, So
- 1:58Speaker 4: I don't know how bad it is, but I'm for
- 2:01Speaker 4: sure they're gonna, you know, if any guys get any
- 2:04Speaker 4: I think little lingering issues. They're going to rest them
- 2:07Speaker 4: before the playoffs because they think they want to be
- 2:09Speaker 4: as healthy as possible because they know what this team
- 2:12Speaker 4: can do and that this team could probably just walk
- 2:14Speaker 4: through the West in the and win a Stanley Cup.
- 2:18Speaker 4: So yeah, it's it's a good, good hockey team. And
- 2:22Speaker 4: I mean, I don't got much more than that, other
- 2:23Speaker 4: than saying that they're fucking sick.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Well.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I love the fact you mentioned the center depth because
- 2:27Speaker 1: you look at it and say, well, McKinnon, obviously, you know,
- 2:30Speaker 1: another one hundred point season, four straight, incredible, brock Nelson's
- 2:33Speaker 1: your number two, and then Noz and Cadri reacquired is
- 2:36Speaker 1: your number three.
- 2:37Speaker 2: And Nas was okay the first little stretch.
- 2:38Speaker 1: He did two goals five assists in the first eleven games,
- 2:41Speaker 1: but scored two goals in that game. An Avalanche power play,
- 2:44Speaker 1: which has been much belign most much of this year,
- 2:46Speaker 1: finally playing better.
- 2:47Speaker 2: They were three for four of the power play. Now
- 2:49Speaker 2: sat two of those power play goals.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I do think when you look at a team, it's
- 2:52Speaker 1: very old school that that center depth right now tough
- 2:55Speaker 1: to top of colle out. I was able to trot
- 2:56Speaker 1: out there with McKinnon, Nelson, Cadre.
- 3:00Speaker 5: Yeah, j he mentioned it, you know, without mccarr and
- 3:02Speaker 5: I think he'll he'll tell this too. When you have
- 3:06Speaker 5: the center depth that they have with McKinnon, Nelson, Cadre,
- 3:10Speaker 5: I mean you, I mean Drury, Parker, Kelly. These guys
- 3:13Speaker 5: are good, good centers like that that Drury Drury too,
- 3:17Speaker 5: Like that helps your That helps your defenseman having good
- 3:20Speaker 5: centers like that, It really does.
- 3:21Speaker 3: It helps your helps your defenseman depth.
- 3:23Speaker 5: And and this team there's not much else to add
- 3:26Speaker 5: what j D said, I mean, it's this team's this
- 3:29Speaker 5: team's an absolute wagon juggernaut like they for them, it's cup
- 3:33Speaker 5: or bust really, and I don't know, there's not much
- 3:38Speaker 5: else to add. Don't think they on the aves except
- 3:40Speaker 5: that they're just there for for me. If they don't
- 3:43Speaker 5: get to the finals, it's gonna be a it's going
- 3:44Speaker 5: to be a loss.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Yeah, Nicholas Watt too, they're at center as well. Even
- 3:48Speaker 1: if you want some more depth. The major story of.
- 3:50Speaker 4: The week, which yeah, I always forget saying now there's
- 3:56Speaker 4: nine points in twelve games to there, so he's right
- 3:59Speaker 4: a rock.
- 3:59Speaker 1: But I meantime, the story of I think probably the
- 4:03Speaker 1: last week definitely caught me by surprise, especially when I
- 4:06Speaker 1: saw John Buchigraz just posting a picture of John Torrella
- 4:10Speaker 1: eating some chicken palm and the headlines in Vegas, Baby Vegas,
- 4:13Speaker 1: and I'm like, I'm really sure what that means.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I'm like, wait, what.
- 4:15Speaker 1: John Tortorella is now the head coach of the Las
- 4:18Speaker 1: Vegas Golden Knights, struggling Golden Knights firing head coach Bruce
- 4:22Speaker 1: Casty eight games left in the regular season and replacing
- 4:25Speaker 1: him with Torts. This is less than three years d
- 4:27Speaker 1: win the Stanley Cup. Cassidy is out towards his seventh
- 4:30Speaker 1: coaching gig with six different teams. He coached the Rangers twice,
- 4:34Speaker 1: actually fired by Philly last season almost a year to
- 4:36Speaker 1: the day before his hiring in Vegas, and Vegas wins
- 4:39Speaker 1: towards his debut was against the last place Caducks.
- 4:42Speaker 2: Lots of thoughts on this night.
- 4:43Speaker 1: My first one is says, I don't know if it's
- 4:46Speaker 1: too little, too late, but I do appreciate an organization
- 4:48Speaker 1: that says, hey, we don't think it's working.
- 4:50Speaker 2: Right now, so we have to mix it up.
- 4:51Speaker 1: We all know that Vegas has been sleepwalking the last
- 4:54Speaker 1: couple of months, and they probably were going to be
- 4:57Speaker 1: fodder for anybody face from the playoffs. So I do
- 4:59Speaker 1: credit Bill Folling Company on all we gotta make a
- 5:01Speaker 1: move now. I don't know if that makes sense. Ten
- 5:02Speaker 1: games left the regular season, if that's gonna enough. Towarts
- 5:05Speaker 1: is definitely a fire and brimstone kind of guy. He
- 5:07Speaker 1: will get everyone's reaction. I don't necessarily think if it's
- 5:10Speaker 1: the right move, I won't say's passed his prime. But
- 5:13Speaker 1: again I think towards the guy that comes in there
- 5:14Speaker 1: at least gets your attention. Is it enough to win around? Perhaps?
- 5:17Speaker 1: I don't know how it works out next year. I
- 5:19Speaker 1: don't know how much Maurner's sleeping for the next seven years.
- 5:21Speaker 1: But at the very least I appreciate organization that says
- 5:24Speaker 1: it's not working. We got to change it up. We
- 5:26Speaker 1: don't care how many games are left. And if you
- 5:28Speaker 1: don't think a coaching change can make an impact, look
- 5:30Speaker 1: at Rick Bonus and what he's.
- 5:31Speaker 2: Doing with the Columbus Blue Jackets night.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Your first thought when someone said Twarts to Vegas playing craps,
- 5:35Speaker 1: let's go Vegas.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Don't wait, baby, They don't wait. They make things happen
- 5:39Speaker 5: right now. And that's what they did. You know, Kelly
- 5:42Speaker 5: mccrimman and.
- 5:43Speaker 4: The huge horns on him.
- 5:45Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely brass balls.
- 5:48Speaker 5: If they don't, If they don't make this move, I
- 5:52Speaker 5: feel like Kelly mccrimman's thinking, all right, Dallas, Colorado, Minnesota,
- 5:56Speaker 5: Like that's where realistically Vegas should be with those teams,
- 6:00Speaker 5: And when you look at their roster on paper, like
- 6:02Speaker 5: they are extremely underachieving this year, and when you look
- 6:05Speaker 5: at the amount of games left and the type of
- 6:08Speaker 5: coach that they need to come in, I don't hate it.
- 6:11Speaker 5: I don't hate them bringing in Towrts. I really don't,
- 6:13Speaker 5: because for a team that has eight games left, you
- 6:16Speaker 5: need a certain guy, certain type of coach, experienced guy,
- 6:20Speaker 5: and he's familiar with a lot of guys in that room,
- 6:22Speaker 5: a lot of guys, a lot of guys on Team USA.
- 6:24Speaker 5: So I think that helps. And then on top of it,
- 6:28Speaker 5: I think there's gonna be a really good effect on
- 6:31Speaker 5: Mitch Marner from John Torrirella on it. I just I
- 6:34Speaker 5: just have this feeling like this could be a really
- 6:36Speaker 5: good fit for him going into the playoffs.
- 6:38Speaker 3: I mean, Mitch Marner is a good all around player.
- 6:40Speaker 5: He really is good defensively and torts likes those type
- 6:43Speaker 5: of players, so I can see it being a good
- 6:45Speaker 5: fit too.
- 6:47Speaker 1: It makes me think, though, JD, like, you know, being
- 6:49Speaker 1: a small guy my whole life. You know, the way
- 6:50Speaker 1: that you get everyone's attention is you go up to
- 6:52Speaker 1: the biggest, baddest guy. You go punch him in the face.
- 6:54Speaker 1: That's towrts his m He's like, I'm not going to
- 6:55Speaker 1: wear out the fourth line guys. I'm gonna go right
- 6:57Speaker 1: after the stars, and if I get his respect and attention,
- 7:00Speaker 1: then everybody else will follow suit. I understand Date's point,
- 7:03Speaker 1: but again, I still don't think which barn is sleeping.
- 7:05Speaker 4: Well, what's I saw the meme is actually not the meme,
- 7:10Speaker 4: but they had a video of his face. Did you
- 7:12Speaker 4: see the dumb and dumbro I was fucking his face
- 7:16Speaker 4: on it, Jim Carrey kick his listening. Well, my first
- 7:23Speaker 4: thought on that is Kelly McCrimmon. On this whole thing,
- 7:26Speaker 4: Kelly McCrimmon is like good Fellow's casino style GM, where hey,
- 7:32Speaker 4: come on over, come out of my house, come for dinner,
- 7:35Speaker 4: and he's just smashed smashing in your knee caps and
- 7:37Speaker 4: slitting your throat, being like yeah, gone, like to his
- 7:40Speaker 4: best friend brother like this guy does not this guy
- 7:43Speaker 4: would fire his mother, like he would fire his mother
- 7:46Speaker 4: from the team and would not give two ships about it.
- 7:48Speaker 4: Would barrier, no pension, no pay, no golden parachute, like
- 7:52Speaker 4: get the fuck out of here. And on top of
- 7:54Speaker 4: that too, he goes, He goes, I never had a
- 7:57Speaker 4: fight once with Bruce Cassidy. I was like, what, like,
- 8:01Speaker 4: what was a conversation, Hey, Bruce, you're done, Get the
- 8:04Speaker 4: fuck out of my city. Bring in John Tortorella. But yeah, towards,
- 8:09Speaker 4: I mean, this is coach recycling to the ends degree.
- 8:11Speaker 4: I guess, you know, I guess he's gonna come in,
- 8:15Speaker 4: and they might bring him in on the two of
- 8:19Speaker 4: your grising, you know, to advise next year.
- 8:22Speaker 2: All right, so we see what happens in Vegas. That
- 8:24Speaker 2: was a surprising move.
- 8:25Speaker 1: A not surprising move is what happened to Maple Leafs
- 8:27Speaker 1: is general manager Brad Schure living out after three seasons.
- 8:30Speaker 1: He made sweeping changes to the roster last summer, including
- 8:33Speaker 1: singa bye to Mitch Marner. He hoped that a new
- 8:35Speaker 1: roster and a head coach, Craig Brewby, could finally give
- 8:37Speaker 1: the Leafs a lengthy playoff run, but the season was
- 8:39Speaker 1: a disaster. He missed the playoffs the first time in
- 8:41Speaker 1: a decade. The main question JD people were saying to
- 8:44Speaker 1: me is why make the move now? If you know
- 8:46Speaker 1: what your living's not going to come back? Why does
- 8:47Speaker 1: it need to be done with only X men of
- 8:49Speaker 1: games left in the regular season? And I believe my
- 8:52Speaker 1: understanding would be that it just takes time, because again,
- 8:54Speaker 1: if you know he's not gonna be the guy, you
- 8:56Speaker 1: might as well have a new face come in, evaluate
- 8:58Speaker 1: this roster moving forward, get ready for the draft, and
- 9:01Speaker 1: so on. Were you surprised at all, JD? Just that
- 9:04Speaker 1: and now rather than the end of the season for
- 9:06Speaker 1: true living, a.
- 9:07Speaker 4: Great human being. I've heard and everything, But I would
- 9:10Speaker 4: have shipped them into the sun, you know, six months ago.
- 9:15Speaker 4: You know, I can't believe they waited this long. I
- 9:18Speaker 4: can't find the article tal if you can find it.
- 9:22Speaker 4: But did you see their their ownership come out Toronto
- 9:26Speaker 4: and say, Keith Pelly, did you hear this psychopath came out?
- 9:31Speaker 4: And he goes, I think we have some great founding.
- 9:34Speaker 4: We already have foundational pieces. We're not It's just it's
- 9:37Speaker 4: not going to be a full rebuild. It's going to
- 9:39Speaker 4: be a little retool. I'm like, dude, are you that, like,
- 9:43Speaker 4: can they not see there? Do what? The rose colored
- 9:47Speaker 4: glasses in Toronto is absolutely insane. They got to burden
- 9:50Speaker 4: this thing to the ground, and I liked that they
- 9:52Speaker 4: did it with Tree Living. Now at least let some
- 9:54Speaker 4: many maybe get in there. And he had a sense
- 9:59Speaker 4: I'm sure they have an idea and I'm sure they've
- 10:02Speaker 4: been looking. I wouldn't be surprised. I know Shane Doan's
- 10:06Speaker 4: around there, so I'm wondering if Shane don maybe gets
- 10:10Speaker 4: a little bit of a nod. He's kind of been
- 10:12Speaker 4: around there in like an advisor role. He'd be a
- 10:14Speaker 4: great kind of ad and an addition there. But yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 4: I just he made some bad moves man tree Living
- 10:21Speaker 4: and again, a great human I've heard, fantastic person, but God,
- 10:24Speaker 4: he made some bad moves. And I just can't believe
- 10:28Speaker 4: that the maple leafs came out Keith Pelly and said
- 10:31Speaker 4: that they have like foundational pieces. That kind of turned
- 10:35Speaker 4: me more than the Tree Living thing, because I'm like,
- 10:37Speaker 4: he's just absolutely fucking delusional. Nate.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, on top of that, he.
- 10:43Speaker 5: Says, uh, Buffalo and Montreal are are are coming, are
- 10:47Speaker 5: coming down him.
- 10:48Speaker 3: I'm like, well, they've been coming.
- 10:51Speaker 5: Coming for a felt if they've been coming for a
- 10:53Speaker 5: long time, you're looking you're looking at him from behind.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Now, Yeah, I agree with JD.
- 11:01Speaker 5: I never played under Brad Tree Living, but same, I've
- 11:04Speaker 5: heard unbelievable things about the guy. And it was like
- 11:07Speaker 5: he was, you know, Toronto was already such a good
- 11:10Speaker 5: regular season team, and he was it was like he
- 11:12Speaker 5: was building this team just for the playoffs because they
- 11:14Speaker 5: hadn't had playoff success. And you know, obviously it's backfired
- 11:18Speaker 5: and and the broster did not turn out the way
- 11:21Speaker 5: I think he thought it would. And this is big
- 11:23Speaker 5: I think for Keith Pelly just from what I'm reading,
- 11:25Speaker 5: I mean, this is this is his higher. Uh you know,
- 11:28Speaker 5: I don't believe he hired Brad Tree Living that was
- 11:30Speaker 5: a Shanahan higher. So this is a big one for
- 11:33Speaker 5: him because he's got to get this right. Because for them,
- 11:36Speaker 5: if they're not rebuilding, which it's pretty evident to me
- 11:41Speaker 5: that they have to, they got to bring it. They
- 11:43Speaker 5: got to bring it down. And on top of that,
- 11:44Speaker 5: JD like, is Austin Matthews going to stay?
- 11:47Speaker 4: Now?
- 11:48Speaker 3: Does he really want to stay during all.
- 11:50Speaker 4: After those comments. But I mean, I guess that's maybe
- 11:53Speaker 4: was a comment directed at Matthews being like, we're not rebuilding,
- 11:56Speaker 4: so like.
- 11:57Speaker 1: I would say, he doesn't want to tell Matthews, the
- 11:59Speaker 1: rebral Matthews, I'm out of here.
- 12:00Speaker 2: Then he's like, no, look, buddy, you got me two
- 12:01Speaker 2: more years, a couple of moys.
- 12:02Speaker 4: We're going to keep you here.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Everything's design right now to keep Austin Matthews happy.
- 12:06Speaker 4: You got two foundational pieces like John Tavers is played well,
- 12:12Speaker 4: but it's John Tavers. Matthewnyes's time will tell if he
- 12:16Speaker 4: can develop into something that's a stud And then Max Tomi,
- 12:20Speaker 4: I mean, other than you know, the fights and he's
- 12:22Speaker 4: had he's had a better year this year. But I
- 12:24Speaker 4: can't you know, I can't trust that that's going to
- 12:28Speaker 4: get you to the Stanley Cup finals. They're NHL players
- 12:32Speaker 4: and they're they're good a NHL players, But you you
- 12:35Speaker 4: show me those five guys and say we're going to
- 12:37Speaker 4: the Stanley Cup finals, I'm like, yeah.
- 12:40Speaker 2: I just feel like a team that I said, yeah,
- 12:43Speaker 2: the Nucleus Stanley Cup team.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Gouda's taken the least by the way two weeks after
- 12:47Speaker 1: a knee on knee hit ended Austin matthews season earned
- 12:49Speaker 1: him a five game suspension. Rocket Goodas Face in the
- 12:52Speaker 1: Least Monday Night. Anaheim injured entering the game, but insisted
- 12:55Speaker 1: on suiting up against Toronto, and it didn't take long
- 12:57Speaker 1: for someone to take on the Ducks captain as Max Dom.
- 13:00Speaker 1: We dropped the clubs at Goodas off the opening face off.
- 13:03Speaker 1: I don't hit Delf too much into this, but I
- 13:04Speaker 1: just could appreciate for one tough got to another. How
- 13:06Speaker 1: about the thoughts of the rematch? You gotas wanted to
- 13:08Speaker 1: answer the bell?
- 13:11Speaker 4: I respect, go ahead, Well, I want I want Nate
- 13:13Speaker 4: to get the long answer here, So I'm gonna go
- 13:15Speaker 4: quick on this because Nate's the one that put his
- 13:18Speaker 4: nuts on the line a lot more than I did
- 13:20Speaker 4: when he played. But I defer to him, but go ahead. Yeah,
- 13:24Speaker 4: this is like the ultimate hockey move, hockey guy move.
- 13:29Speaker 4: Like this is the fact that and I want to
- 13:31Speaker 4: get Nate's opinion on this, but like that's like I
- 13:35Speaker 4: can't even know what the equivalent is. It's like you're going,
- 13:37Speaker 4: You're electing to go to the firing squad. You know,
- 13:40Speaker 4: I heard he had a bad shoulder, bumped shoulder, Like
- 13:42Speaker 4: if you get a bump shoulder, it's an acy, or
- 13:44Speaker 4: it wasn't acy. It was a high ankle sprain. It's
- 13:46Speaker 4: high innkel sprain. I've had him like you can't plant
- 13:49Speaker 4: on your foot, like you can't, you can't have any toast,
- 13:51Speaker 4: so like you're just holding yourself pretty straightforward and you're
- 13:56Speaker 4: just eating punches. So like he tried that level of
- 14:00Speaker 4: like hey, I'm made a mistake and I got to
- 14:04Speaker 4: own up to it and him feeling bad. I mean,
- 14:07Speaker 4: if you're a fan and you hate radkal Goudis, like
- 14:09Speaker 4: that shit, that's pretty ballsy. He didn't have to play
- 14:12Speaker 4: in that game. And this is a team that's trying
- 14:14Speaker 4: to win a Stanley Cup right now. Goodas that are.
- 14:16Speaker 4: They're firmly in the playoffs, like and he's a big
- 14:18Speaker 4: piece of that. So I can't imagine what he was
- 14:21Speaker 4: going through, Nate, but I'll let you take it away.
- 14:23Speaker 4: But yeah, it was. It was pretty incredible to see.
- 14:26Speaker 3: It was.
- 14:26Speaker 5: It was for me his captain material stuff and and
- 14:29Speaker 5: Rad coogutis I we both know him a little bit,
- 14:32Speaker 5: great guy. Uh you know, he obviously what he did
- 14:36Speaker 5: wasn't wasn't good. But for him to for him to
- 14:39Speaker 5: basically say, I have to play in this game. I
- 14:42Speaker 5: don't want this to linger and I and I take
- 14:45Speaker 5: this a step further with him, like I don't think
- 14:46Speaker 5: he's just doing it for that reason. I think he's
- 14:48Speaker 5: doing it obviously too, because he doesn't want other guys
- 14:51Speaker 5: on his team to be affected, you know, young guys,
- 14:53Speaker 5: guys getting hurt like that was a big part of it,
- 14:56Speaker 5: knowing that Toronto hasn't have much to play for and
- 14:58Speaker 5: they're still trying to get in the playoffs.
- 15:00Speaker 3: I mean it was I was at the game. It
- 15:02Speaker 3: was pretty electric. I mean, I like, after the national anthem,
- 15:05Speaker 3: there was people around me.
- 15:06Speaker 5: I was like, hey, you don't want to sit down,
- 15:07Speaker 5: just keep standing up, just because of the opening face
- 15:10Speaker 5: off and and and to your point, JD like the
- 15:14Speaker 5: fact that he basically said, like I don't care what
- 15:19Speaker 5: the injury is, I'm playing this game, and you know,
- 15:21Speaker 5: the whole game, Like he took absolute abuse. Like it
- 15:25Speaker 5: wasn't just the fight, Like every time someone skated by him,
- 15:29Speaker 5: they were giving him a cross check, they were running him,
- 15:31Speaker 5: they were I mean, the guy that me Poetta went
- 15:32Speaker 5: after him again, like he just took absolute beating that
- 15:36Speaker 5: whole night and played with whatever he's playing through and
- 15:39Speaker 5: just kept on coming. And it just shows a ton
- 15:41Speaker 5: of leadership and and I think he's trying to teach
- 15:44Speaker 5: these young guys right and to your point as well,
- 15:46Speaker 5: JD at the beginning at the top, like there's no
- 15:49Speaker 5: other sport that's even close to this that can like
- 15:53Speaker 5: I can't even compare it to anything that a guy
- 15:55Speaker 5: is like, Hey, I got to show up and I
- 15:57Speaker 5: got to fight tonight because of what I did two
- 15:59Speaker 5: weeks ago. Even though I have a hind ankle sprain,
- 16:01Speaker 5: I'm still going to show up. It's it's it's fuckings.
- 16:05Speaker 5: It's awesome. Actually, I mean respect to Raco.
- 16:07Speaker 1: Goodas yeah, kind of like we got to see a
- 16:09Speaker 1: Bradture living. You know, it's your living's record not strong
- 16:11Speaker 1: with people all university like him. With Rocco Goodis, certainly
- 16:14Speaker 1: there's a love it or hated element to his game.
- 16:15Speaker 1: A yell can ride the line to and be clean
- 16:17Speaker 1: and dirty. But again everyone's always say he's a great guy,
- 16:19Speaker 1: especially if he's a teammate something which is not getting
- 16:21Speaker 1: great reviews right now.
- 16:22Speaker 4: It's this playoffs system.
- 16:23Speaker 1: We've talked about it a lot, especially what's happening right
- 16:25Speaker 1: now in the Central the fact you've got these loaded teams.
- 16:28Speaker 1: You're gonna have Colorado and Dallas and Minnesota, and you
- 16:31Speaker 1: know those teams, two of them knocked out after the
- 16:34Speaker 1: second round the playoffs.
- 16:35Speaker 2: But it's interesting about that gap from the East and
- 16:37Speaker 2: the West.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Fellas Nashville, Los Angeles, Winnipeg, San Jose, and Seattle are
- 16:42Speaker 1: battling for the last wildcard spot in the West. All
- 16:44Speaker 1: teams that will be nowhere near the postseason if they're
- 16:46Speaker 1: in the Eastern Conference. Meantime, five teams in the East
- 16:50Speaker 1: currently outside of a playoff spot would comfortably.
- 16:52Speaker 2: Be in the playoffs if they're out West.
- 16:54Speaker 1: Even the Leafs would be battling for a playoff spot
- 16:56Speaker 1: if they're in the Western Conference.
- 16:58Speaker 2: Was they were until nineteen ninety eight Central Division. Again
- 17:01Speaker 2: that we've talked about.
- 17:02Speaker 1: It's not something that's new. Everyone's saying, listenone was just
- 17:05Speaker 1: saying it for a while. But my question is this,
- 17:07Speaker 1: what would it take for Gary Batman Company to actually
- 17:10Speaker 1: make a change, Like how dramatic would have to be
- 17:12Speaker 1: They'd say, okay, you know what we got to do something,
- 17:14Speaker 1: get to one to sixty, one through eight, whatever it is,
- 17:16Speaker 1: because this current system is too flawed.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Uh, if winning peg ends up making the playoffs, he'll
- 17:23Speaker 4: change it. That's that's what's gonna take it. If they
- 17:27Speaker 4: fucking slide in, they're one point out, it's insane. They
- 17:30Speaker 4: played so good right now. Yeah, I mean, listen, that's
- 17:33Speaker 4: that's hockey, baby, Like it's sometimes it's cute when I
- 17:37Speaker 4: was when I was playing, I mean, the East absolutely
- 17:40Speaker 4: stunk compared to the West and la Anaheim and San Jose,
- 17:45Speaker 4: we were just stomping teams and the East had, you know,
- 17:50Speaker 4: ten less points than the West. Eight seed and guys
- 17:53Speaker 4: that we really out of the playoffs. So like it happens,
- 17:55Speaker 4: there's swings in the NHL. I I do believe the
- 17:58Speaker 4: one in eight needs to be handled. I believe how
- 18:00Speaker 4: the playoffs are formatted once teams get like now that
- 18:05Speaker 4: you're in and it's set, that I think needs to
- 18:08Speaker 4: change because I understand and I've heard Gary talk and
- 18:12Speaker 4: and he says, you know, it's the most exciting first
- 18:14Speaker 4: round of any sport. And I don't disagree with him
- 18:16Speaker 4: on that, But don't you think that the first round
- 18:20Speaker 4: of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs, and Nate's been in
- 18:23Speaker 4: them and so have. I like that regardless of who
- 18:28Speaker 4: you're playing, rivalry or not, you are trying to fucking
- 18:32Speaker 4: kill each other in that those first two games, it's
- 18:34Speaker 4: the most exciting hockey. I remember, you know, I was
- 18:37Speaker 4: playing like we were in San Jose. We played Colorado,
- 18:41Speaker 4: wasn't even our division. The first round they took us
- 18:43Speaker 4: to six our first year, it was a fucking war
- 18:46Speaker 4: and we like didn't even know each other, and as
- 18:48Speaker 4: soon as the puck drop it was like somebody hit somebody,
- 18:52Speaker 4: and like like that's but that's NHL Stanley Cup playoffs.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Like that is the first round. It is no matter
- 18:58Speaker 4: what you put in front, somebody's gonna do something stupid
- 19:01Speaker 4: and then there's gonna be a big rivalry from there. Though,
- 19:04Speaker 4: once that first round is done, the second round lacks
- 19:07Speaker 4: some juice sometimes and so you want that second round.
- 19:11Speaker 4: That's when I think they need the rivalries is in
- 19:13Speaker 4: that second round, and I feel like the stakes are higher.
- 19:16Speaker 4: So I don't think one sixteen they need to go
- 19:19Speaker 4: to too much travel. I think that's that's that's us
- 19:22Speaker 4: doing too much. But yeah, one versus eight needs to happen.
- 19:26Speaker 4: I know Gary won't do it, and he's pretty firm
- 19:28Speaker 4: on on the seating right now, but yeah, that's why
- 19:32Speaker 4: I just yeah, I just think it's the best product
- 19:35Speaker 4: no matter who's playing in the first round of any sport.
- 19:37Speaker 5: So yeah, my argument to the to the one through eight,
- 19:43Speaker 5: which it should be, is, uh, you know, you have
- 19:46Speaker 5: your stars like mccarr, these guys playing in the conference
- 19:49Speaker 5: finals and finals rather than being knocked out in the
- 19:51Speaker 5: first round. And on top of that, like you have
- 19:53Speaker 5: these teams that are you know, they have such a
- 19:56Speaker 5: good regular season, they should be rewarded and part part
- 19:59Speaker 5: of getting a standing up finals. And JD will agree this,
- 20:02Speaker 5: Tod like, you gotta have a little bit of a luck,
- 20:03Speaker 5: a little bit of luck, and at the same time,
- 20:05Speaker 5: you gotta have a favorable matchups getting there. And I
- 20:08Speaker 5: think if you're in the Central Division right now, like
- 20:11Speaker 5: you no question have the hardest road to the Stanley
- 20:15Speaker 5: Cup right now. So I think there's that element to
- 20:17Speaker 5: it as well. But I'm too much of a traditionalist too,
- 20:20Speaker 5: Like one through sixteen, uh, probably not one through eight
- 20:24Speaker 5: definitely should happen.
- 20:26Speaker 2: Yeah, we all know Grey Bevans the type.
- 20:28Speaker 1: It has to be something drastic, otherwise they'll say, well,
- 20:30Speaker 1: it's cyclical, these things happen, they'll change. As long as
- 20:33Speaker 1: the playoffs are good, people are going to watch the
- 20:34Speaker 1: matter what. But I still keep thinking of the fact that,
- 20:37Speaker 1: you know, as the playoffs progresses, the fact that a
- 20:39Speaker 1: Minnesota is going to be out the first runder of
- 20:41Speaker 1: the Dallas will be out the first round. Of the
- 20:43Speaker 1: fact that that match, whoever wins, that will face Colorado
- 20:45Speaker 1: as a second round matchup.
- 20:46Speaker 2: That will be a shame. But hopefully, as always, the
- 20:48Speaker 2: rest of the playoffs speak right, go ahead.
- 20:49Speaker 4: Jady, A quick question from all of you, just to
- 20:54Speaker 4: have a little bit of fun. Nashville Predators at seventy
- 20:57Speaker 4: seven points, Eli Kings at seventy six, Winnipeg at seventy six,
- 21:01Speaker 4: San Jose at seventy five, Seattle at seventy five, Lewis
- 21:04Speaker 4: at seventy three. Who do you think's in? Because only
- 21:09Speaker 4: one of them is making it in right now, who
- 21:11Speaker 4: do you each got that makes it in the playoffs?
- 21:13Speaker 4: I still got Nashville even though they drop four straight
- 21:15Speaker 4: and they are three straight and then they're going to sleep.
- 21:17Speaker 4: Right now, I still got to stick with Nashville. But
- 21:20Speaker 4: who you guys got, because that is a fricking pillow fight.
- 21:23Speaker 4: But whoever is winning that gets nine extra days in
- 21:26Speaker 4: the NHL and they're done because they're gonna get swept.
- 21:29Speaker 4: But who do you got?
- 21:30Speaker 1: Well this brings us to our last topic, which is
- 21:32Speaker 1: about the fact these last Gas team. So I'm gonna
- 21:34Speaker 1: stump right now with the team that I'm pulling for,
- 21:36Speaker 1: which is the Winnipeg Jets. According to Money's the Jets
- 21:41Speaker 1: are fifteen point six percent chance. The only reason I'm
- 21:44Speaker 1: pulling form is this NHL Amazon Monday on Prime. We've
- 21:47Speaker 1: got the Jets coming up and John fors in the
- 21:49Speaker 1: Seattle KRACKTT. So I want this Jets team to win out.
- 21:52Speaker 1: I'm gonna be back in the Peg on Monday.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Jada, you've told me the past. You think it is old,
- 21:55Speaker 2: sneaky with some food.
- 21:56Speaker 1: Nate corroborating that, also saying the Peg a sneaky, sleepy
- 22:00Speaker 1: town for NHL player. So I'm hoping at something in
- 22:03Speaker 1: the water there. I'm hoping the going while the porta
- 22:05Speaker 1: Jermaine when I'll be there five days from now. Let's
- 22:07Speaker 1: Scott O'Neil and the Winnipeg Jets again fifteen percent chance.
- 22:11Speaker 1: I got money puck odds. You said Nashville right now,
- 22:14Speaker 1: Nashville's at twenty one percent. San Jose is actually a
- 22:16Speaker 1: twenty five percent, and the Kings of all the teams
- 22:19Speaker 1: you mentioned, they have the best odds right now, thirty
- 22:21Speaker 1: four percent. I think Nate's hardes with the Kings. Go ahead, Nate, No,
- 22:25Speaker 1: all right, I'm with I'm with JD. I had them
- 22:29Speaker 1: out too. I had them out too, and I gotta
- 22:31Speaker 1: stick to my guns. Yeah exactly.
- 22:34Speaker 5: I'm saying Nashville is going to get in still because
- 22:37Speaker 5: I because of the Pillow Fight division. I just thought
- 22:40Speaker 5: there was gonna be five Central and three Pacific instead.
- 22:43Speaker 5: You know it was gonna be dominated by the Central.
- 22:45Speaker 5: So I picked Nashville even though fucking Winnipeg. Man, like,
- 22:50Speaker 5: this is San Jose too.
- 22:51Speaker 3: This is crazy.
- 22:52Speaker 4: You're right, I know Tal's taking San Jose. I want
- 22:55Speaker 4: to take them though. I want to take San Jose bad.
- 22:58Speaker 3: I thought you were gonna take your sharkis for sure.
- 23:00Speaker 4: I should have. I don't know what I was thinking.
- 23:02Speaker 4: I just I want I don't know what. I want.
- 23:04Speaker 4: Stammer to make the playoffs same hed comeback season. Yeah,
- 23:09Speaker 4: I was just gonna say.
- 23:10Speaker 6: I mentioned in our in our text chat last night
- 23:13Speaker 6: Jets Sharks on April sixteenth, a playoff spot could be
- 23:17Speaker 6: on the line in the biggest Jets Sharks Jets Sharks
- 23:21Speaker 6: matchup since West Side story.
- 23:26Speaker 4: To the story, great work. I do tell you gotta
- 23:30Speaker 4: give it to him every now and again when.
- 23:31Speaker 2: We come back. We'll talk to our friend Kevin Weeks.
- 23:33Speaker 1: He's gonna be a part of the ESPN Inside Out
- 23:36Speaker 1: Classic this week. Weeks He's got stories for days. You're
- 23:38Speaker 1: gonna love him. He's coming up next after this on
- 23:40Speaker 1: NHL and scripted.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Our special guest. He's one of our favorites, both on
- 23:57Speaker 2: the air and off.
- 23:57Speaker 1: He was drafted in the second round, forty first overall
- 24:00Speaker 1: by the Florida Panthers in nineteen ninety three NHL Draft.
- 24:03Speaker 1: He would going to play three hundred forty eight regular
- 24:05Speaker 1: season games with the Panthers, Canucks, Islanders, Lightning, Hurricanes, Rangers,
- 24:10Speaker 1: and Devils.
- 24:10Speaker 2: That's right, the Tri state area.
- 24:12Speaker 1: He dominated and since his playing days, he's become one
- 24:14Speaker 1: of the most trusted broadcasters in the sport and again
- 24:17Speaker 1: a friend to all, especially when it comes to headroom
- 24:20Speaker 1: on those videos he posts on social media and it's
- 24:22Speaker 1: the one.
- 24:22Speaker 2: And only my man, Scarborough's owne. Kevin Weeks is in
- 24:25Speaker 2: the house.
- 24:25Speaker 4: Weeks see.
- 24:26Speaker 3: How are you, brother, what's up?
- 24:27Speaker 7: What's up guys? Good morning?
- 24:28Speaker 8: Thanks for that ads, what's up fella. It's great to
- 24:31Speaker 8: be with you guys. Thanks for having me. I know
- 24:33Speaker 8: we've been trying. You guys are trying to get me
- 24:35Speaker 8: on for a while, so appreciate we were able to
- 24:37Speaker 8: make it work and thanks for your patience.
- 24:38Speaker 7: Man. Happy to join you guys, of course.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Of course.
- 24:40Speaker 3: Man.
- 24:41Speaker 2: Thrilled you're able to make the time.
- 24:42Speaker 1: We have so much to get to as always, we
- 24:43Speaker 1: could wrap for hours, but I want to go with
- 24:45Speaker 1: the good stuff out of the gate. He's been hosting
- 24:46Speaker 1: the Big Inside Out Classic this weekend, in which the
- 24:49Speaker 1: Caps and Rangers players replaced on screen by characters from
- 24:52Speaker 1: the classic films. We know what it's like. We see
- 24:54Speaker 1: with young kids, so does Nate listen. These animated movies
- 24:57Speaker 1: have taken on life of their own. And I've seen
- 24:59Speaker 1: this even with you know, people who aren't in the sports,
- 25:01Speaker 1: like oh wait, they're doing whatever it might be like
- 25:03Speaker 1: the SpongeBob football games. It is a huge success on Nickelodeon.
- 25:06Speaker 1: So I think this is a great idea. And you,
- 25:08Speaker 1: in particular have such a great personality because you obviously
- 25:11Speaker 1: are a great father, but also can relate to kids
- 25:12Speaker 1: well and can still call hockey well.
- 25:14Speaker 2: So when you're.
- 25:15Speaker 1: Calling an animated game, how do you do that to
- 25:18Speaker 1: make it pleasurable and attracted to that audience while still
- 25:21Speaker 1: not alienating the dads we're watching who still want to
- 25:23Speaker 1: watch hockey game.
- 25:25Speaker 8: Oh I appreciate that, man, Thank you for the kind words. Look,
- 25:28Speaker 8: I think it's really cool because pardon me allows us
- 25:32Speaker 8: to connect with a younger demo. And as like anything,
- 25:35Speaker 8: when you connect with a younger demo, typically you'll have
- 25:38Speaker 8: a grandparent watching, You'll have an ant to uncle watching,
- 25:41Speaker 8: You'll have you know, a brother in law watching. There'll
- 25:43Speaker 8: be a grandma, grandpa, somebody will be watching with them. Typically,
- 25:46Speaker 8: So with that, yes, it's directed primarily in terms of
- 25:50Speaker 8: the focus towards some of our younger demos, the younger
- 25:53Speaker 8: kids that love TV and that love sports and maybe
- 25:56Speaker 8: have a chance to kind of meet.
- 25:57Speaker 7: Them in the middle.
- 25:58Speaker 8: But at the same time, once you have kids, it
- 26:00Speaker 8: kind of draws them in it's like me, I love hockey.
- 26:02Speaker 8: My older cousins started playing in the street in Toronto
- 26:04Speaker 8: started playing following him. Next thing, you know, my parents
- 26:06Speaker 8: and my letent and and uncle, they're all in in
- 26:09Speaker 8: the game. So that's kind of how that worked. But
- 26:11Speaker 8: here's the one thing I would say, and our first
- 26:13Speaker 8: two that we did, which were really really fun on
- 26:16Speaker 8: ESPN a couple of years ago or two years consecutively
- 26:20Speaker 8: now I should say, both started trending on Twitter like
- 26:23Speaker 8: they were trending topics, and my phone started blowing up
- 26:26Speaker 8: in a good way, because sometimes it doesn't always blow
- 26:29Speaker 8: up in that way, but it started blowing up in
- 26:30Speaker 8: a good way, and people.
- 26:31Speaker 7: Are like, oh my god, we're watching and I got
- 26:32Speaker 7: my granddaughter loves this is amazing. You got to do more.
- 26:34Speaker 7: The league has to do more of these.
- 26:35Speaker 8: So I think it was a really good point of
- 26:37Speaker 8: emphasis and a good focus group that we got that
- 26:39Speaker 8: feedback and that the fans and people in the game,
- 26:42Speaker 8: just different people around were saying that and giving us
- 26:45Speaker 8: that feedback.
- 26:46Speaker 7: It was encouraging.
- 26:46Speaker 8: And we got two Emmy nominations for both games, two
- 26:50Speaker 8: EMMI Finals for both games. So hopefully they let us
- 26:52Speaker 8: know because the first two times they never let us
- 26:54Speaker 8: know that. So hopefully are good folks at ESPN are watching,
- 26:57Speaker 8: and if we get another Emmy nomination, they better.
- 26:59Speaker 7: Let us know.
- 27:00Speaker 8: They're acting like we just knuck in there like cockroaches,
- 27:02Speaker 8: like they don't want to even give us the heads up.
- 27:04Speaker 7: Give us the heads up next time.
- 27:06Speaker 8: So no, we're looking forward to it alongside Drew Carter again,
- 27:09Speaker 8: anarda our and our crew. It should be a lot
- 27:11Speaker 8: of fun.
- 27:12Speaker 4: Let the boy know he's got an Emmy. Hey, let
- 27:15Speaker 4: us know what's going on.
- 27:17Speaker 1: The lights on, they know there's a clause nomination.
- 27:21Speaker 2: I gotta kick it a little bonus. That's where it's
- 27:23Speaker 2: at week, so you know it.
- 27:24Speaker 8: Yeah, I see, I know. Let me jump in with
- 27:26Speaker 8: one quick thing too, which is pretty interesting. And I'll
- 27:29Speaker 8: tell you what's really cool. So as you know, kids,
- 27:32Speaker 8: they live in kind of this alternate universe sometimes.
- 27:35Speaker 7: Uh and and our son last night.
- 27:36Speaker 8: So we've got a bunch of there's a bubble hockey
- 27:38Speaker 8: super checks just opposite me here. But we've got like
- 27:41Speaker 8: three of these different hockey games. Right, There's a bubble hockey,
- 27:43Speaker 8: then there's one with plastic men that you actually move
- 27:46Speaker 8: with your hand, and then there's an air hockey and
- 27:48Speaker 8: he's taking the plastic men off of that and put
- 27:50Speaker 8: them on. Here's where I'm going Yesterday, he's got the
- 27:53Speaker 8: Pop the Pops. The pups are in the lineup. The
- 27:56Speaker 8: Pops are in the lineup, Like Everest is not in
- 27:59Speaker 8: the lineup. He takes Everest, puts him on the playing service.
- 28:02Speaker 8: I go Rockies, he goes right, Key's in the lineup.
- 28:05Speaker 8: He takes Rocky, puts him into lineup. So I'm like, bro,
- 28:09Speaker 8: those guys are not in the lineup. Okay, He's like, no, tonight.
- 28:13Speaker 2: In the lineups.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Chase chases on the case.
- 28:17Speaker 7: Chases on the you guys know.
- 28:20Speaker 8: So so all of that to say, that's kind of
- 28:23Speaker 8: you know, that that kind of mirrors where we're going
- 28:26Speaker 8: with this broadcast, just because those things are you know,
- 28:29Speaker 8: they're in love with those things.
- 28:30Speaker 7: So it's pretty awesome.
- 28:32Speaker 4: That's amazing. And and uh, I mean, you're so good
- 28:35Speaker 4: at molding into different forms of color with different you know,
- 28:40Speaker 4: with different games. And right now you're also provided color
- 28:44Speaker 4: for the n cuale A tournament. So right now you
- 28:46Speaker 4: got the Frozen four coming up. You got miss Denver
- 28:49Speaker 4: Nodak Wisco like for you, how's that been? And being
- 28:53Speaker 4: a Toronto boy, Canadian boy covering that college hockey, I mean,
- 28:58Speaker 4: how is that atmosphere, what's what's what's the difference for you?
- 29:01Speaker 4: And how do you like it?
- 29:02Speaker 7: Bonkers? That's a great question. Thanks you.
- 29:04Speaker 8: I'll tell you what I grew up and of course,
- 29:06Speaker 8: you know growing up in Toronto, growing up in the
- 29:08Speaker 8: Toronto area and growing up in Scarborough. For me, everything
- 29:11Speaker 8: was junior junior, junior junior, and you know the geography
- 29:14Speaker 8: when you just look up and down the road. We
- 29:16Speaker 8: had Oshawa twenty minutes east at my parents' house, and
- 29:19Speaker 8: then he had Kingston, Belleville, you go back the other way, Kitchener,
- 29:22Speaker 8: gwelf London. You know, they were all around there and
- 29:24Speaker 8: obviously there's more teams there now. But man, I'm telling
- 29:27Speaker 8: you going to Oshawa Old Memorial Civic Center on a
- 29:30Speaker 8: Sunday night and games I wasn't days, I wasn't playing
- 29:32Speaker 8: like when I was in Banham and the.
- 29:34Speaker 7: Biggie was there.
- 29:36Speaker 8: I'm getting goosebumps talking about it because I played with
- 29:39Speaker 8: his brother Brett and when and when Biggie went to Oshawa,
- 29:42Speaker 8: bro Nhlai, they looked like Komodo dragons watching him play.
- 29:53Speaker 7: I swear to god, I mean, he's that's sick. He
- 29:57Speaker 7: was that sick, like that much of a freak.
- 29:59Speaker 8: And they had really good players on his seat, my
- 30:01Speaker 8: man Freddie Brathwaye and the net went on to play
- 30:03Speaker 8: a long time the NHL. Dale Craigwell played for San
- 30:05Speaker 8: Jose Sharks. I can go up and down. They had
- 30:07Speaker 8: really good players. But that was like our thing. So
- 30:10Speaker 8: when these letters were coming to my parents' house, like
- 30:12Speaker 8: go I turned fourteen, Michigan State, Oh that's really cool,
- 30:16Speaker 8: all right, put it to the side. University of Wisconsin. Oh,
- 30:18Speaker 8: that's really cool. Put a sign you man. Oh that's awesome.
- 30:21Speaker 8: Cool bu oh that's I had like because it was
- 30:24Speaker 8: a one track mine to play junior and although the
- 30:27Speaker 8: majority of us did, especially Canadian born players, then a
- 30:30Speaker 8: couple of my buddies played in college and now doing
- 30:33Speaker 8: college hockey. I gotta say, man, it's un believable. It's bonkers.
- 30:38Speaker 8: It's an alternate path. It's a different kind of reality
- 30:41Speaker 8: because the players get more time to train and to
- 30:44Speaker 8: practice and to develop. But to answer you, the atmosphere
- 30:48Speaker 8: is amazing, and I hope to cover a lot more
- 30:49Speaker 8: in the future. I think it's awesome even in South
- 30:51Speaker 8: Dakota just now. My partner Jason Ross, like those fans travel.
- 30:56Speaker 8: They had buses for the fans, like it's really hype.
- 30:59Speaker 8: And the way they run their teams, they really run
- 31:02Speaker 8: them very well, some as wells NHL teams in terms
- 31:05Speaker 8: of resources. So to answer you, JD, it was a
- 31:07Speaker 8: lot of fun. I love doing it. I really enjoyed it.
- 31:10Speaker 5: I love that it's in Vegas, Totty, pretty good spot
- 31:15Speaker 5: to go a weeks.
- 31:16Speaker 8: What suit you got, Okay, so listen gold suit, no,
- 31:22Speaker 8: no here, I would love that. But here's where I
- 31:24Speaker 8: got Stevie nixed. So I did the regionals. I did
- 31:29Speaker 8: the regionals and then they pull out the sharpest scissors too,
- 31:35Speaker 8: so it's gonna be bouci. I guess Kobe Cohen and
- 31:38Speaker 8: they've done it for years obviously, and they've also used
- 31:40Speaker 8: to do it with Barry with Barry Melrose our a
- 31:41Speaker 8: great friend who's going through some hell challenges. So those
- 31:44Speaker 8: guys always get the Frozen four. But we did the
- 31:46Speaker 8: regionals so, but I can't tell you we were there.
- 31:49Speaker 8: I had a Vegas game for ESPN with Steve Levy
- 31:51Speaker 8: about ten days ago, and they're so excited to host
- 31:54Speaker 8: this man. Like speaking to people from the organization, they're
- 31:57Speaker 8: so jacked that they're hosting the Frozen four in Vegas.
- 32:00Speaker 8: So I think it's gonna be epic. But I'm gonna
- 32:03Speaker 8: be watching it like everybody else from the sectional from
- 32:05Speaker 8: the couch over here. So look forward to watching it.
- 32:08Speaker 3: That's a crew. That's a great crew.
- 32:10Speaker 5: Speaking of cruise, you know you started out in Florida
- 32:14Speaker 5: and we're gonna go back.
- 32:15Speaker 3: We gotta go back to your playing crew a little bit.
- 32:16Speaker 3: You know, you you joined a.
- 32:18Speaker 5: Vancouver team that had a lot of personalities. You know,
- 32:21Speaker 5: I'm looking at the Mark, Mark Messier, Naslyn mcgilney, Todd Bertuzzi.
- 32:25Speaker 5: What were there had to be some good stories playing
- 32:28Speaker 5: on that team in Vancouver.
- 32:30Speaker 8: Yeah, I would say the biggest, The best one I
- 32:32Speaker 8: can tell you is just playing with mess Guys, It's
- 32:34Speaker 8: unbelievable playing with him that I could you know, we
- 32:36Speaker 8: could talk off camera for a long time, but playing
- 32:38Speaker 8: with Mark Messier was unbelievable, especially when he came back
- 32:41Speaker 8: to play at the Garden. And I want to say
- 32:43Speaker 8: that was my first NHL shoutout too. We knew we
- 32:45Speaker 8: couldn't lose with him being back at the garden, fans
- 32:48Speaker 8: going crazy for him. So all in all, it was unbelievable.
- 32:52Speaker 8: Just learning from a guy like him and some of
- 32:53Speaker 8: those other guys, seeing how they roll, it was unreal.
- 32:56Speaker 8: And you know this too, guys, when you get to
- 32:58Speaker 8: work with or play with like icons.
- 33:01Speaker 7: It's everything. It's everything, you know.
- 33:04Speaker 8: You just to see how they operate, see how they think,
- 33:07Speaker 8: see how they conduct themselves, see how they approach the game,
- 33:09Speaker 8: see how they approach life. I'll give you kind of
- 33:12Speaker 8: a parallel story to so not with Mess, because Mess
- 33:15Speaker 8: wore different skates every day, which was amazing, by the way,
- 33:18Speaker 8: brand new skates show up, different brands, graphs today, CCMs tomorrows,
- 33:23Speaker 8: different brands, bro different brands, and smooth as cocoa butter
- 33:27Speaker 8: in them like not I got to break these in
- 33:31Speaker 8: not skating around like you know, he's got fifteen bunions
- 33:33Speaker 8: on one foot like smooth.
- 33:38Speaker 9: Yeah, exactly, Like honestly, it was just it was just
- 33:42Speaker 9: like he's so elegant, so elegant to watch and all
- 33:47Speaker 9: these different brands show up every day and you just
- 33:49Speaker 9: take them out lace them up, like not even put.
- 33:51Speaker 8: Them on the hydroculator to moisten them or anything out
- 33:54Speaker 8: of the box. Fresh, let's go, I'm mess chin up,
- 33:58Speaker 8: shoulders back, let's go. So anyway, I'll tell you kind
- 34:02Speaker 8: of a parallel sort of that. No, all smooth, I'll
- 34:06Speaker 8: tell you a parallel story. So we're I'm playing in
- 34:08Speaker 8: Carolina and it's kind of you know, a similar iconic
- 34:10Speaker 8: player in uh in Ron Francis, right, And I remember
- 34:15Speaker 8: I was like, man, we're over by the boards. Was
- 34:16Speaker 8: during practice, Man, holy smokes, man Jeter and man Jeter,
- 34:22Speaker 8: what he's doing and what he's done, and man, what
- 34:25Speaker 8: this guy's done and what.
- 34:26Speaker 7: That guy's done.
- 34:27Speaker 8: And I was just talking, just rambling, just getting in
- 34:29Speaker 8: between drills, and Ron Ronny Francis looks over at me.
- 34:32Speaker 7: He's like, as in, I'm in that ether you ain't
- 34:39Speaker 7: didn't even say it. He didn't, he didn't even say it.
- 34:41Speaker 8: He's like, it's like, oh, it's like that, okay, I
- 34:47Speaker 8: got you, I got it.
- 34:48Speaker 7: So yeah, that was that.
- 34:50Speaker 8: Those were some of the stories that you get playing,
- 34:52Speaker 8: you know, with those those elite guys, and and just
- 34:55Speaker 8: how unreal they were.
- 34:56Speaker 3: Man.
- 34:56Speaker 8: But but mess and mess carried a different aura a
- 34:59Speaker 8: bottom too, just because he had the swag. Can you
- 35:04Speaker 8: imagine practicing with a Scully cap on, sometimes in no helmet,
- 35:09Speaker 8: like just a skull cap, like a Scully cap that's it,
- 35:12Speaker 8: like a beadie sometimes exactly.
- 35:16Speaker 4: Never I was wondering when they were gonna cut me
- 35:18Speaker 4: every day.
- 35:20Speaker 8: Of course, of course you're just like walking on eggshells,
- 35:23Speaker 8: like you know, it took so long to just feel comfortable,
- 35:26Speaker 8: to know that you had a place in the league.
- 35:28Speaker 8: But uh yeah, mess was a different caddies one on one.
- 35:30Speaker 8: One of the best ever man, one of the best athletes,
- 35:33Speaker 8: just a great, great man, great dude.
- 35:35Speaker 2: Swag obviously, I was about to say teammate now at ESPN.
- 35:37Speaker 1: Still doing good job obviously with Steve Levy, our friend
- 35:40Speaker 1: Swag and PK Suban. I'm surprised you. I've never asked
- 35:42Speaker 1: you this. Our great producer Tow brought this up. You
- 35:44Speaker 1: battle with the NHL over the right to wear the
- 35:46Speaker 1: double zero on your back. You eventually set out for
- 35:49Speaker 1: eighty because that was the closest you could get to it.
- 35:51Speaker 1: But I've never asked you where did that come from?
- 35:54Speaker 1: And how long did that battle go?
- 35:55Speaker 2: The NHL.
- 35:57Speaker 7: Okay uh So basically I wore double zero.
- 36:00Speaker 8: The majority of like my minor hockey coming up in
- 36:02Speaker 8: Toronto play for Toronto Reppingks. So I wore double zero.
- 36:04Speaker 8: A lot and true story. Mike Torkiya, who's older than me,
- 36:08Speaker 8: was an awesome goalie. He ended up playing for Dallas,
- 36:11Speaker 8: played for Kitchener, was unreal for Kitchener. Played in the
- 36:13Speaker 8: nineteen ninety World Cup for Kitchener against Eric Lindross and
- 36:17Speaker 8: the Oshawa Generals, which my dad and I went to
- 36:19Speaker 8: that game at Cops Coliseum at Hamilton. Oshawa won that
- 36:22Speaker 8: game in ot epic game. But Torch was an unreal
- 36:25Speaker 8: goalie as well, and he lived in our neighborhood when
- 36:28Speaker 8: we used to live downtown in Toronto, so I saw
- 36:30Speaker 8: him as being older than me. He rocked double zero.
- 36:32Speaker 8: I'm like, yo, this is fire. Of course, Robert Perish,
- 36:35Speaker 8: the chief for some of the Celtics iconic it was
- 36:38Speaker 8: kind of a thing.
- 36:40Speaker 7: So like, okay, this is this is going to be
- 36:42Speaker 7: my number. So I wore it. I wore it, I
- 36:43Speaker 7: wore it.
- 36:44Speaker 8: There's a couple odd years where you know, the people
- 36:47Speaker 8: that do the sweaters your jerseys, they messed them up
- 36:49Speaker 8: and I was like, thirty two for a year. Okay,
- 36:51Speaker 8: Magic Johnson wore that, so that's cool. I was then
- 36:54Speaker 8: like thirty for a year. Okay, that's kind of brute,
- 36:56Speaker 8: but whatever. Get back at double oh's. Wear double o's
- 36:59Speaker 8: in junior, wear double o's in the minors, in the
- 37:03Speaker 8: in the American League, and the ih else. I'm like,
- 37:04Speaker 8: this is my these are my digits. All of a sudden,
- 37:07Speaker 8: Marty Buran was the last one to wear double zero
- 37:11Speaker 8: when he got called up to the Buffalo Sabers. Marty
- 37:13Speaker 8: b I was the last one to wear it, and
- 37:16Speaker 8: Matt Taxing Mabi And next thing you know, I say
- 37:20Speaker 8: to the I say to a trainer, I'm like, well,
- 37:22Speaker 8: like what number you wear? I'm like double zero? Like no,
- 37:24Speaker 8: you can't wear that. What do you mean The league
- 37:26Speaker 8: said you can't wear that? Like what are you talking about?
- 37:28Speaker 8: Like the league said you can. So anyways, my then
- 37:30Speaker 8: agent at the time was kind of going through it.
- 37:33Speaker 8: He wasn't really a big agent at the time in
- 37:35Speaker 8: terms of his like stable of players that he had,
- 37:38Speaker 8: and there was no way I was going to win that.
- 37:40Speaker 8: So basically I had to kind of color tell me
- 37:43Speaker 8: tween my legs and I was like, okay, I'll wear
- 37:46Speaker 8: number eighty. It's the closest looking number to double zero.
- 37:50Speaker 8: There was an eighty in my parents' first address in Canada,
- 37:53Speaker 8: five eighty. So I took the eighty. Jerry Rice was
- 37:56Speaker 8: wearing eighty, and that's kind of where that came from.
- 37:58Speaker 8: That's kind of where that came from. Yeah, but I
- 38:02Speaker 8: got to tell you it's weird when you wear a
- 38:03Speaker 8: number that's not your number. Out don't care what anybody says. Yeah,
- 38:05Speaker 8: not a number that you love.
- 38:06Speaker 7: You know what I mean?
- 38:07Speaker 4: It doesn't feel right right, doesn't feel right.
- 38:09Speaker 7: I don't care what anybody starts. I don't like, just
- 38:11Speaker 7: be happy. I got a sweater.
- 38:12Speaker 8: I'm like, bro, this is the league what you're talking about.
- 38:17Speaker 8: You're playing pro. This isn't or you're playing at a
- 38:19Speaker 8: high level. This is one thing. If you're just playing
- 38:21Speaker 8: ball hockey with your buddies, like you want to feel
- 38:25Speaker 8: the part you want to feel who you are, that
- 38:28Speaker 8: becomes kind of a part of you.
- 38:29Speaker 7: And yes you could, Hey, I wear four. I changed
- 38:32Speaker 7: to forty four. I understand. You know you wear seven.
- 38:35Speaker 8: You go there, you go to boss exactly, Tom or
- 38:37Speaker 8: those are those this's my birthday too. You go to Boston, Okay,
- 38:41Speaker 8: Ray Borg wore that. Okay, Ray Borke, then fill us posito.
- 38:43Speaker 8: You understand the history of it. But aside from that,
- 38:46Speaker 8: like just to be just to be like salty to
- 38:49Speaker 8: somebody because they're a young player, and then you think
- 38:51Speaker 8: they think that they're special because they're wearing a number.
- 38:53Speaker 7: I think that that's kind of antiquated myself.
- 38:56Speaker 4: You know, you talk about coming in and coming in
- 39:00Speaker 4: the league. I work with you at the network. You
- 39:03Speaker 4: have a saying we do these little like gifts at
- 39:05Speaker 4: the network. So it's like during a game if if
- 39:08Speaker 4: somebody says something outlandish, a Mike Rupp face will come
- 39:11Speaker 4: up and I'll go, what the rop. But there's one
- 39:14Speaker 4: of weeks. See, anytime somebody scores, it goes walkaw all right,
- 39:17Speaker 4: it's his first game, goes welcome to the National. I
- 39:21Speaker 4: say that to ask you, what was your welcome to
- 39:24Speaker 4: the national moment? And what was there? Where was there
- 39:27Speaker 4: a moment where you step back and you're like, holy shit,
- 39:30Speaker 4: like no one's gonna believe this, but this is my
- 39:33Speaker 4: NHL moment in my own head.
- 39:35Speaker 8: Yeah, So there's a few, all right. So The first
- 39:38Speaker 8: one is my first NHL start in Ottawa. My last
- 39:41Speaker 8: year junior in the O before I turned pro, I
- 39:44Speaker 8: played for the sixty sevens.
- 39:46Speaker 7: We didn't make the playoffs.
- 39:47Speaker 8: My boy Jamie Langerbrunner, who then became my doubles teammate,
- 39:51Speaker 8: great dude, great player, assistant Jim of Boston the man
- 39:55Speaker 8: he left Minnesota went to Peterborough, which never happened, by
- 39:57Speaker 8: the way, to play for the Peterborough piece. So they
- 39:59Speaker 8: end up getting into the playoffs ahead of us. We've
- 40:01Speaker 8: got like five six of us on our sixty seven
- 40:05Speaker 8: seene that go on to play in the NHL, and
- 40:07Speaker 8: there should have been more like we had a bunch
- 40:09Speaker 8: of guys. Anyway, all that to say, we don't make
- 40:12Speaker 8: the playoffs. So now I'm kind of thinking, all right,
- 40:14Speaker 8: you know whatever, every practice you got to treat them
- 40:17Speaker 8: like a game, especially when you're a goalie for me anyway,
- 40:21Speaker 8: same thing in rookie camps and all these things. So
- 40:22Speaker 8: now we're playing. It's my first NHL started in Ottawa.
- 40:26Speaker 8: You know, my folks come down to drive the four
- 40:28Speaker 8: hours from Toronto down four one to get there. My
- 40:30Speaker 8: then agent whatever, different people, bro man, this is the
- 40:34Speaker 8: day before the game, they tell me.
- 40:36Speaker 7: I'm like, I'm deep breathing.
- 40:38Speaker 8: I'm doing like yoga retreats in my dress and in
- 40:40Speaker 8: my hotel room, just to try to get right, just
- 40:42Speaker 8: to try to center myself, because it's not like these
- 40:45Speaker 8: guys coming in now.
- 40:46Speaker 7: We're Oh, I played with you last year at the program.
- 40:48Speaker 7: What's up? I played with you last year University of Michigan.
- 40:50Speaker 7: What's that? And the league is young.
- 40:52Speaker 8: This is like all the guys you play, you grew
- 40:54Speaker 8: up hockey cards, the whole thing.
- 40:56Speaker 7: So it was a trippier transition, right, Yeah.
- 40:59Speaker 8: So we get in, we play, we tie the game
- 41:03Speaker 8: to to there's no o t there's no like shootout
- 41:05Speaker 8: or whatever. We tie the game to to. I'm second
- 41:08Speaker 8: star or whatever I was in the game. After the game,
- 41:11Speaker 8: I'm doing an interview in the hallway because I played
- 41:12Speaker 8: junior Ottawa. We're playing the sims and doing an interview
- 41:14Speaker 8: in the hallway, and I then coach Doug mclainey's horsing around,
- 41:17Speaker 8: but he sees me doing a live interview and he
- 41:21Speaker 8: hits like, ad NaN's headset off my head live interview,
- 41:25Speaker 8: bro live, Like we're doing a live interview. This is
- 41:29Speaker 8: mid nineties, like who does that? So that was kind
- 41:33Speaker 8: of like one of those. We then had one where
- 41:38Speaker 8: we're playing the Rangers down in Florida, down in old
- 41:40Speaker 8: Miami Arena, which was the boss. I loved that building.
- 41:43Speaker 8: We're playing there and warm up Richter Leech mess Gretz
- 41:49Speaker 8: this is who we're going against. So it's again it
- 41:52Speaker 8: was I don't know, maybe this was my third or
- 41:53Speaker 8: whatever start, so that was a thing. And anyways, we
- 41:57Speaker 8: end up losing this game for three. I get I
- 41:59Speaker 8: have thirty eight saves. I don't know if I'm a
- 42:01Speaker 8: game star in this game or not. After the game,
- 42:04Speaker 8: we I'm out right and we're working out outside the
- 42:06Speaker 8: our dressing room in Miami Arena. So I'm riding the bike.
- 42:09Speaker 8: Guys at work, who we're doing whatever. Wayne Gretzky walks by,
- 42:13Speaker 8: puts his hand on my shoulder. Good job out there today, kid,
- 42:16Speaker 8: And he kept walking. But he had four points. He
- 42:20Speaker 8: was in on all four goals.
- 42:22Speaker 7: They went four to three.
- 42:24Speaker 8: I'm thinking, I'm kind of nice. I'm like, oh, I
- 42:26Speaker 8: made thirty eight saves, kind of getting this thing. Gretz
- 42:30Speaker 8: just like checkmated me and he wasn't trying to be
- 42:32Speaker 8: like spicy.
- 42:33Speaker 4: Either right, this nice it is being nice.
- 42:36Speaker 8: But he's like, I'm being nice, but I had four
- 42:38Speaker 8: points though, so welcome to the league. Thanks for the
- 42:40Speaker 8: four point night, but you played well, see you later.
- 42:43Speaker 8: So I ended up telling him this story years ago.
- 42:46Speaker 8: I told him this story years ago at at doublegoat
- 42:49Speaker 8: him and Jordan at Jordan's Grove twenty three down there
- 42:53Speaker 8: in Jupiter's golf course. We're sitting at the table and
- 42:55Speaker 8: I told this story and Gretz was howling. You couldn't
- 42:58Speaker 8: believe it. He's like, did I say that to you?
- 42:59Speaker 8: Him like, yeah, you said that to me, So anyway,
- 43:02Speaker 8: that was kind of funny. And then the other thing
- 43:04Speaker 8: and and kind of going back to your walking to
- 43:05Speaker 8: the national guys, I could not win a game to
- 43:09Speaker 8: save my life, like I couldn't. I couldn't get a win.
- 43:12Speaker 8: I could not get a win. I was like, oh
- 43:14Speaker 8: and thirteen. And some of the games I played really
- 43:16Speaker 8: well in some of them I was inconsistent in and
- 43:19Speaker 8: I couldn't string I couldn't string the game together at
- 43:23Speaker 8: the NHL level because I'd become so dominant in the
- 43:26Speaker 8: IHL and whatever else in IHL goal the year, and
- 43:29Speaker 8: I was played number one minutes even coming out of
- 43:31Speaker 8: junior in the American.
- 43:32Speaker 7: League my first two years.
- 43:33Speaker 8: So once I kind of got it was hard to Okay,
- 43:36Speaker 8: do I make a save, I made the save, Do
- 43:38Speaker 8: I freeze it, do I move it?
- 43:39Speaker 7: All these different things.
- 43:40Speaker 8: At the league level, and I couldn't get a win,
- 43:43Speaker 8: and people were all over me.
- 43:44Speaker 7: This guy baach.
- 43:46Speaker 8: DH and ten bah one two and oh one and five,
- 43:51Speaker 8: and it was really hurtful, like, honestly, God, I couldn't.
- 43:55Speaker 8: And then you know, you had the people that are
- 43:57Speaker 8: then intentionally calling me Steve, Steve Weeves can't get it
- 44:00Speaker 8: when I'm like, well, you know Steve Weeks.
- 44:03Speaker 3: I know Steve Weeks.
- 44:05Speaker 8: His dad was a principal at Silver Springs Public School.
- 44:07Speaker 8: My cousins went there. Our names aren't spelled the same,
- 44:10Speaker 8: We're not on the same part of the color wheel. Yes,
- 44:12Speaker 8: he was a goalie, but we're different people. So I
- 44:15Speaker 8: started to kind of take on, just like snowball life
- 44:17Speaker 8: from its own and I was snowballing downhill Man and
- 44:21Speaker 8: I was just trying to pull like any little what.
- 44:23Speaker 8: I made a save on him, okay, but I made
- 44:25Speaker 8: two saves on them, okay, but I couldn't.
- 44:27Speaker 7: It wouldn't click for me.
- 44:30Speaker 8: And that's a big part of why I emphatically want
- 44:32Speaker 8: to shout people out with welcome to the National because
- 44:35Speaker 8: it was a real hard transition for me, and I
- 44:38Speaker 8: know the way I felt, and I know the way
- 44:40Speaker 8: you know it was kind of being covered and being reported,
- 44:43Speaker 8: and how hurtful it was and how frustrated it was.
- 44:46Speaker 8: So I want for every young player that's out there,
- 44:48Speaker 8: when their mom and dad's watching, their siblings are watching,
- 44:52Speaker 8: they make the show, they get their first w they
- 44:54Speaker 8: score their first goal, I want to highlight them because
- 44:57Speaker 8: that's an iconic moment, you know, that's like you've landed
- 45:00Speaker 8: on the moon type moment, and I want to play
- 45:02Speaker 8: a little part in celebrating then when they get that.
- 45:05Speaker 4: Randy Han does that too. He calls every he calls
- 45:09Speaker 4: every first goal like it's the Stanley Cup final winning goals.
- 45:12Speaker 4: So those that those family members have a memory of
- 45:16Speaker 4: core memories, that's pretty cool. I love that.
- 45:19Speaker 7: Thank you, Yeah, that's where that came from.
- 45:21Speaker 5: I love that week see and thanks and and and
- 45:24Speaker 5: Gretz just basically being like, you're welcome kid.
- 45:27Speaker 7: Oh my gosh, it's so good. Check.
- 45:30Speaker 5: Speaking of being back in the NHL, you know you
- 45:32Speaker 5: played under you know Torts, John Tortorella. Uh, what do
- 45:36Speaker 5: you make of him being back in Vegas and being
- 45:37Speaker 5: hired there.
- 45:39Speaker 7: Let me tell you something.
- 45:41Speaker 4: Weeks and Tarts together. Weeks Towards had nine.
- 45:45Speaker 7: Towards had ninety nine lives.
- 45:47Speaker 8: Man not nine, he's got ninety, No kidding what but Towards.
- 45:52Speaker 8: Let me tell you something. I played for Torts in
- 45:54Speaker 8: the American League and Spangler Cup. I got loan to Rochester.
- 45:57Speaker 8: Steve Shields got called up the Savers. I got loan
- 46:00Speaker 8: that we go over playing Spangler Cup. Anyways, we uh
- 46:04Speaker 8: as an American League team, we go play. I'm goalie
- 46:07Speaker 8: of the tournament. I had one game, we had seventy
- 46:09Speaker 8: I had seventy two saves in one game. I think
- 46:10Speaker 8: we got out shot seventy six or twenty something. We
- 46:12Speaker 8: win the game, and you know, it kind of went
- 46:17Speaker 8: kind of viral in the days of pre going viral
- 46:19Speaker 8: because it's you know, it's a lot of shots, seventy
- 46:21Speaker 8: six shots or whatever it was, seventy five shots, and
- 46:25Speaker 8: I'm thinking I'm going to get the next start. I
- 46:27Speaker 8: don't get the next start, I'm like, what, but this
- 46:30Speaker 8: is towards coaching, So so that was kind of my
- 46:33Speaker 8: first kind of introduction to him.
- 46:35Speaker 7: But then I played from.
- 46:36Speaker 8: In Tampa and then he came in, and you know,
- 46:39Speaker 8: he did a good job of kind of shaping that
- 46:42Speaker 8: young roster. A lot of us were very young, Pavel Cabina,
- 46:45Speaker 8: Brad Richards, Marty Saint Luis, Vinnie Le Cavalier. You know,
- 46:49Speaker 8: I can vack claud prosh bowl like good players man,
- 46:51Speaker 8: Like I can go down the league, down the level
- 46:54Speaker 8: of how the players.
- 46:55Speaker 7: That we had on that team, and he's like, no,
- 46:57Speaker 7: we got to do.
- 46:57Speaker 8: This, this, this, this, this has got to be this, this, this,
- 47:00Speaker 8: this this, And although it was a little bit frustrating,
- 47:02Speaker 8: and then they traded for Habey Bullen, which was really
- 47:04Speaker 8: frustrated for me, but I really used it as an
- 47:07Speaker 8: opportunity to be a sponge and learn and learn because
- 47:10Speaker 8: Haby Bullen was the man. He go toe to toe
- 47:13Speaker 8: with belfour, toe to toe with Patrick Watt, toto toe
- 47:17Speaker 8: with Marty.
- 47:18Speaker 7: He was that good.
- 47:19Speaker 8: And I used that with that time with him and
- 47:22Speaker 8: torts to really take my game to the next level.
- 47:24Speaker 8: And uh yeah, very interesting, but I'm going to tell
- 47:27Speaker 8: you a quick story about Torts too. So we're working
- 47:30Speaker 8: on NHL Network and I remember, like it was yesterday,
- 47:33Speaker 8: like Towarts, I played for you don't leave me hanging.
- 47:38Speaker 8: So I come in one day, I'm like, I heard
- 47:40Speaker 8: you're going to Columbus.
- 47:41Speaker 3: Weeks.
- 47:41Speaker 8: I don't know what you're talking about. You're off your RockA,
- 47:44Speaker 8: I don't know what you're see you just come up
- 47:45Speaker 8: with all this crazy. I'm like, Torts, I heard you're
- 47:49Speaker 8: going to Columbus. I played for you. Don't mess around.
- 47:52Speaker 8: He's like, a day and a half later, Towards has
- 47:55Speaker 8: gone to Columbus, So then you can't do that. So
- 47:58Speaker 8: then he's with us on ESPN, and I'm like, Torts,
- 48:02Speaker 8: I'm gonna polish you up here like the best pair
- 48:04Speaker 8: of Italian dress shoes ever.
- 48:07Speaker 7: You're gonna be glistening. You're I'm gonna.
- 48:09Speaker 8: Polish you up on TV. But you better not leave
- 48:12Speaker 8: me hanging again. And fortunately when he got the when
- 48:15Speaker 8: he got the Philly job, he gave me the scoop. Okay,
- 48:17Speaker 8: so add that for your flyers and uh and yeah,
- 48:21Speaker 8: so I think for him. Ultimately, listen, Bruce Cassidy did
- 48:23Speaker 8: an amazing job there. Let's give Bruce all his flowers,
- 48:27Speaker 8: you know, help them win a Stanley Cup. He really
- 48:28Speaker 8: took the team to the next level. I think they
- 48:31Speaker 8: I was just out there. I just told you, And
- 48:33Speaker 8: I think for for them, they started looking heavy footed,
- 48:38Speaker 8: they started looking slow, the boots weren't really there. Something
- 48:42Speaker 8: was missing. And that doesn't all fall on Cassidy. To me,
- 48:45Speaker 8: they messed up when they traded my boy Logan Thompson.
- 48:47Speaker 8: I've said this a billion times. Oh yeah, but I
- 48:50Speaker 8: think for Torres this is and for them, this is
- 48:52Speaker 8: a good opportunity for a little what I want to say,
- 48:55Speaker 8: some jumper cables on the boys.
- 48:57Speaker 7: Just some jumper cables on the boys. Definitely has that's
- 49:00Speaker 7: my thought. Yeah, I like it.
- 49:02Speaker 5: He's a coach I never played I never played for.
- 49:05Speaker 5: I would love to play for.
- 49:06Speaker 7: Yeah. Yeah, he's real.
- 49:07Speaker 8: He's real And sometimes, you know, sometimes, how can I say,
- 49:12Speaker 8: Sometimes you get in in instances where you want somebody
- 49:16Speaker 8: to put a little bit more honey on what they're
- 49:18Speaker 8: telling you. Torto's gonna give it to you direct. But
- 49:20Speaker 8: I've I've always had a really good relationship with him,
- 49:23Speaker 8: and and he's always real he's always he's always direct,
- 49:27Speaker 8: and I've always had a good relationship with him, so
- 49:29Speaker 8: I'm happy for it.
- 49:31Speaker 4: Awesome.
- 49:32Speaker 2: One more and we'll get you out of here. Weeks
- 49:33Speaker 2: you mentioned the Flyers.
- 49:34Speaker 1: I gotta bring up the fact this Philly team right
- 49:36Speaker 1: now is on a run and everyone thought they were
- 49:38Speaker 1: dead eight tow and won their last eleven games.
- 49:40Speaker 2: Scarborough's own Rick Tocket is doing a phenomenal job.
- 49:44Speaker 1: Damn Bludar has been great all year, but week see,
- 49:45Speaker 1: here's the revelation. Sam Yerson was unplayable bunch of the
- 49:48Speaker 1: year hit at eight sixty save percentage before the break.
- 49:51Speaker 1: Since then, he's been incredible. I cannot believe how good
- 49:54Speaker 1: Sam Arrison has been coming out of the break. And
- 49:55Speaker 1: now they've gotta pote one two. Obviously, I love connecting
- 49:58Speaker 1: Ziegress has been great. This Flyers team just a hell
- 50:00Speaker 1: of a run there on.
- 50:02Speaker 7: I'm impressed.
- 50:03Speaker 2: Man.
- 50:03Speaker 7: It's funny.
- 50:04Speaker 8: I've done I don't know seven six seven Flyer games
- 50:07Speaker 8: this year, just driving down the turnpike almost as from
- 50:10Speaker 8: the house here in Jersey, and I got to tell
- 50:13Speaker 8: you every there's such an interesting team. You're watching the game,
- 50:17Speaker 8: they're not dominating the game. Then they're down. Then all
- 50:21Speaker 8: of a sudden, out of know where, there's a play,
- 50:24Speaker 8: a little connecting player around the net. Bang, they're back
- 50:26Speaker 8: in the game. And now on tippet's going once again,
- 50:29Speaker 8: which I love.
- 50:30Speaker 4: The forehead when you're announcing stuff. How'd that come to be?
- 50:33Speaker 4: I love it? It's my favorite thing. On the highway,
- 50:35Speaker 4: you put yourself locations.
- 50:37Speaker 1: When he did in Barbados what I think he did
- 50:39Speaker 1: on the side of the four oh one, I was quick.
- 50:41Speaker 4: He had to fall over into.
- 50:44Speaker 8: I did, Okay, So what happened was listen. You know,
- 50:47Speaker 8: you guys know we've we've been around a long time.
- 50:49Speaker 8: I've got a lot of respect for Dregs and and
- 50:52Speaker 8: really the o G. Bob McKenzie, the originator, the Bob
- 50:55Speaker 8: Father and Dregs, and then there's Chris Johnson and Freeze
- 50:59Speaker 8: and all those different guys and pere Lebron. I don't
- 51:01Speaker 8: want anybody to feel left outed, Frankie Saravali. There's a
- 51:06Speaker 8: bunch of different people, and all of them work really
- 51:08Speaker 8: hard at what they do at their craft. But one
- 51:11Speaker 8: thing that I've always wanted to do, and JD you
- 51:13Speaker 8: kind of talked about this earlier, is not be a
- 51:16Speaker 8: one trick pony per se.
- 51:18Speaker 7: I've always wanted.
- 51:18Speaker 8: To try to learn different skills and add different things
- 51:21Speaker 8: and be able to do different things, because you know,
- 51:23Speaker 8: the media landscape is always changing. There's always something new,
- 51:26Speaker 8: there's always someone new, there's always this, And for me,
- 51:30Speaker 8: by being versatile, I feel like that provides like a
- 51:32Speaker 8: different type of value. So there's no real thought, we
- 51:35Speaker 8: need you on this show. Cool, you want me on
- 51:36Speaker 8: that show. Cool, you want me over here, Cool, you
- 51:38Speaker 8: want me between the benches, Fine, you want me in
- 51:40Speaker 8: the booth, cool, you want me to hope whatever. And
- 51:43Speaker 8: that was something where I was pretty intentional about it
- 51:46Speaker 8: because I've played, we played, We've been in the game,
- 51:51Speaker 8: and I know a lot of people in the game.
- 51:53Speaker 8: So there aren't any other former players in any major
- 51:56Speaker 8: sport that have become an insider, so to speak. So
- 51:59Speaker 8: it's something that I kind of wanted to add and
- 52:02Speaker 8: just based on relationships, and you guys know this, ninety
- 52:05Speaker 8: nine percent of the stuff that we know we can't
- 52:06Speaker 8: say anyway, just based on relationships, and you can't necessarily share,
- 52:10Speaker 8: and you value your relationships more than you do being
- 52:14Speaker 8: able to break news.
- 52:15Speaker 7: But for example, like how that came to be. When
- 52:20Speaker 7: I first started doing it.
- 52:23Speaker 8: Anyway, my wife encouraged me should just go ahead and
- 52:25Speaker 8: do it, and just what do you just you always
- 52:27Speaker 8: have this in from your talking to people on the
- 52:29Speaker 8: phone all day. Just just go ahead and start doing it.
- 52:31Speaker 8: And I tried to be honest with you. I tried
- 52:33Speaker 8: doing it through the networks, and they're kind of like, well,
- 52:38Speaker 8: you're not so, and so you're not so, Like all right, okay, cool,
- 52:42Speaker 8: So I can't break it, Okay, no problem. So that's
- 52:44Speaker 8: why I start doing it on Twitter and on social
- 52:47Speaker 8: And the first one I was trying to do the
- 52:49Speaker 8: selfie and I kind of jack it up and then
- 52:51Speaker 8: everybody's laughing and they're like, weeks, what are you doing?
- 52:54Speaker 8: You don't even know how to use the phone?
- 52:56Speaker 3: You are you?
- 52:57Speaker 7: Are you on a flip phone? What are you doing?
- 53:00Speaker 4: Bro?
- 53:00Speaker 7: Are you on a Nokia?
- 53:02Speaker 8: Like?
- 53:02Speaker 7: What are you on?
- 53:03Speaker 8: And then I started leaning into it more at my
- 53:05Speaker 8: wife's kind of suggestion, I'm like, all right, I'm just
- 53:07Speaker 8: gonna lean into this and own this. I know I
- 53:09Speaker 8: look like a dork, and it started to become a thing.
- 53:12Speaker 8: But the other part of it, too is where you
- 53:14Speaker 8: ask like the locations. The best part of this, guys
- 53:17Speaker 8: is you know, the stories don't wait for you to
- 53:19Speaker 8: be convenient. You're just talking about like talk or whatever
- 53:23Speaker 8: the case may be. It just doesn't wait for Tom
- 53:27Speaker 8: or Adnan or JD.
- 53:29Speaker 7: Just for you guys.
- 53:29Speaker 8: When it's convenient, right, it just happens. So when it
- 53:33Speaker 8: happens where you're at, you got to go ahead and
- 53:36Speaker 8: report the news and give the people what they want.
- 53:37Speaker 7: So that's kind of how it's started.
- 53:39Speaker 1: Obviously, the multi talented he's been hosting the big Inside
- 53:42Speaker 1: Out classic this week and the Capitals and the Rangers
- 53:45Speaker 1: replaced on screen my characters from their classic films as
- 53:48Speaker 1: animated as ever.
- 53:49Speaker 3: Wicks.
- 53:49Speaker 1: You can't think enough and obviously you're a great teammate
- 53:51Speaker 1: on the air off there much loved to make the
- 53:53Speaker 1: kids being a girl dad. You get it all done
- 53:55Speaker 1: and you do a top shelf. So love me, man,
- 53:57Speaker 1: Appreciate you, Oh love you, guys.
- 53:59Speaker 3: Man.
- 53:59Speaker 8: Thanks for having me on. We'll do it again. We'll
- 54:01Speaker 8: do a longer one next time. This is just appe teaser.
- 54:03Speaker 2: We'll do app teezer right Joed right now, co host
- 54:06Speaker 2: of the show.
- 54:07Speaker 7: I love it. Thanks for having me on.
- 54:08Speaker 1: Boys, I did want to talk about a classic here
- 54:18Speaker 1: on the Wayback Machine. Liar Liar introduced it to the boys.
- 54:21Speaker 1: At what age is it good enough to watch Liar
- 54:22Speaker 1: Liar with their children? We're like, well, I think this
- 54:24Speaker 1: is right the age seventeen, fourteen, nine and seven nine
- 54:27Speaker 1: year old's some sexually explicit scenes kind of fast word
- 54:30Speaker 1: a little bit, but I gotta tell you this, Jim
- 54:31Speaker 1: Carrey Nate in terms of Gopher Broke balls out comedy,
- 54:34Speaker 1: you look back at his career now and obviously A's
- 54:36Speaker 1: Fentura still rings true. People love the mask. Dumb and
- 54:39Speaker 1: dumber we have mentioned earlier in the show, but I
- 54:41Speaker 1: think Liar Liar pound for pound eighty five minutes courtroom comedy.
- 54:45Speaker 1: It's about as high concept as it gets. Just one thought,
- 54:47Speaker 1: just as guy can't lie for twenty four hours, and
- 54:50Speaker 1: then he goes through every single physical gesticulation you can
- 54:52Speaker 1: imagine height of comedy.
- 54:54Speaker 2: The boardroom scene in particular.
- 54:56Speaker 1: If somebody hasn't seen Liar Liar in a long time,
- 54:58Speaker 1: just go look up the boardrooms even Liar Liary me
- 55:00Speaker 1: and the boys on the floor as he insults every
- 55:03Speaker 1: single person. He caps it with the tattoo excuse me,
- 55:07Speaker 1: the two pey when he slams it on the wall
- 55:08Speaker 1: like I haven't laughed at heart in a long time.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Amen to liarler.
- 55:12Speaker 4: I it's so good, and I mean there's so many
- 55:16Speaker 4: lines in uh you know, the fishing what's the fishing
- 55:20Speaker 4: line when he does it to the girl or when
- 55:22Speaker 4: he's sitting there.
- 55:23Speaker 2: The pen is.
- 55:30Speaker 4: There's just so many Oh man, it's it's that that
- 55:33Speaker 4: boardroom scene. I mean, the whole thing is is amazing.
- 55:36Speaker 4: When he gets pulled over by the cops. Uh, when
- 55:40Speaker 4: I'm speeding. All the parking tickets, there's the party does
- 55:44Speaker 4: all the parking decads and everything. So yeah, he's I
- 55:49Speaker 4: mean his height was, I mean, his peak was. I
- 55:52Speaker 4: don't know if there's many peaks like kids in comedy.
- 55:55Speaker 2: Great cast, by the way, everybody had lilar check it out.
- 55:58Speaker 1: You haven't seen it in a while. All right, a
- 55:59Speaker 1: couple more stories here to get them. We'll call the
- 56:01Speaker 1: day Frondal finding his place in Chicago. More rookies making
- 56:05Speaker 1: their NHL debut these last few weeks. One may have
- 56:07Speaker 1: already made his imprint on the Blackhawks. Anton Frondell, the
- 56:10Speaker 1: third overall pick last summer, joined the Blackhawks last week
- 56:13Speaker 1: has five points of five games shown some chemistry with
- 56:15Speaker 1: Connrabra Dart and sparks some hope among Blackhawks fans, especially
- 56:19Speaker 1: if they can get a top draft pick this summer.
- 56:21Speaker 1: Jad a little more love here. It's been Blackhawk down
- 56:24Speaker 1: all season. Maybe some reason to have optimism.
- 56:28Speaker 4: It has been. I listen, they this Frondell, they have
- 56:30Speaker 4: high hopes for him. They're open to find a dynamic
- 56:33Speaker 4: winger to go alongside of connorbra Dart, and hopefully they
- 56:39Speaker 4: can find some chemistry and they can get another pick,
- 56:42Speaker 4: bring in another high end talent and then just slowly
- 56:45Speaker 4: build some veterans around them and really kind of build
- 56:48Speaker 4: towards something. And they've taken some steps in the right direction.
- 56:51Speaker 4: Blash has done a great job, and I think this
- 56:53Speaker 4: team's responded well. Connor's rounded out his game. So Frondell
- 56:56Speaker 4: is a nice piece and a nice ad for them.
- 57:00Speaker 5: Yeah, they've been talking about they need someone to play
- 57:02Speaker 5: with Connibra Dart, and they've been talking about Frondelle. Come
- 57:04Speaker 5: and the games that I've watched, he looked good. I
- 57:07Speaker 5: mean even his first game makes a nice play to
- 57:09Speaker 5: mckayb to get a you know, to get his first point.
- 57:12Speaker 5: And this is this is what the Chicago Blackhawks need
- 57:15Speaker 5: moving forward. They need these young guys to hit because
- 57:19Speaker 5: you know, they can't be they can't be rebuilding forever.
- 57:22Speaker 5: It's you know, it's time to take to take the
- 57:24Speaker 5: next step. I think they're probably looking to be like
- 57:26Speaker 5: you know, the likes of Montreal, Anaheim, these teams that
- 57:29Speaker 5: have you know, taken the next step. Chicago's gonna have
- 57:31Speaker 5: to do the same thing with these young guys.
- 57:32Speaker 2: Coming still is a great anthem, but the very lead
- 57:34Speaker 2: you go to Chicago, man, that anthem.
- 57:36Speaker 4: Rocks all right.
- 57:36Speaker 1: Flowers the baby Faced Assassin Macklin celebrating multipoint game against
- 57:40Speaker 1: the Blues Monday night. The Shark Star becomes the sixth
- 57:43Speaker 1: teenager in an NHL history to collect one hundred points
- 57:46Speaker 1: in a season, after Gretzky, Howard, Chuck Lemieux, Jimmy Carson,
- 57:50Speaker 1: under the Radar, and Sidney Crosby. Another major milestone from Maxell,
- 57:54Speaker 1: your boy JD. You can talk all things celebrating a
- 57:56Speaker 1: teenager getting it done with the sentry mark.
- 58:00Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, there's there's not enough we can say
- 58:02Speaker 4: about this kid, and I think it's it's going to
- 58:04Speaker 4: be one of those things where we're going to get
- 58:06Speaker 4: like McDavid fatigue, where it's just there's just records being
- 58:09Speaker 4: broken all the time and you're like, oh, yeah, I
- 58:12Speaker 4: did something again. But they've found a ton of chemistry
- 58:15Speaker 4: and this is kind of the line of the future
- 58:17Speaker 4: for them, and that's what they're hoping with this, Chernisov,
- 58:21Speaker 4: Smith and celebrity. This is the line that they want
- 58:23Speaker 4: to put out there. And Macklin kind of struggled a
- 58:27Speaker 4: little bit for three four games, and I think they
- 58:30Speaker 4: needed Churnisov is hurt with that concussion, and he's kind
- 58:33Speaker 4: of finding his game now. So they're they're very dominant together.
- 58:36Speaker 4: They kind of find ways to play on the perimeter.
- 58:39Speaker 4: But with you know, Will Smith is more of their
- 58:42Speaker 4: perimeter guy, but then with Macklin and Chernisov, they can't
- 58:44Speaker 4: cut through and and and I mean, he's just he
- 58:48Speaker 4: plays a two hundred foot game. He's so hard. He
- 58:50Speaker 4: works so incredibly hard away from the puck. And I
- 58:53Speaker 4: think if you're a young kid or you're a coach
- 58:56Speaker 4: teaching a young kid, and they keep saying I want
- 58:59Speaker 4: to be Macklin celebrity, it's like show everything he does
- 59:01Speaker 4: away from the puck, because that kid will quickly be like, no,
- 59:04Speaker 4: I don't want to do that. I'm want to be
- 59:06Speaker 4: Patrick Kane instead, because he goes he plays a hard game,
- 59:10Speaker 4: Nate like hard game, and that's it's it's that's what's
- 59:15Speaker 4: the most respectable thing I have for him is that.
- 59:20Speaker 5: I love that you pointed that out, just because everyone
- 59:23Speaker 5: talks about how good he is with the puck and
- 59:25Speaker 5: how the plays he makes, and he is, he's unbelievable,
- 59:27Speaker 5: but away from the puckets crazy. When you when you
- 59:29Speaker 5: Iso cam him, when you got Iso cam adn like
- 59:32Speaker 5: watch him, you know in the D zone. I mean
- 59:35Speaker 5: I played, I played the center position, you know, for
- 59:38Speaker 5: him to be the first guy back, first guy in,
- 59:41Speaker 5: like he's all over the map and and I think
- 59:44Speaker 5: that's just a testament to you know, he is. He's generational.
- 59:48Speaker 5: But it's not just his talent, it's his work ethic,
- 59:50Speaker 5: the way he you know, handles himself on the ice.
- 59:53Speaker 5: I mean, if if if San Jose gets in, uh,
- 59:56Speaker 5: he's got to be the m v P. I'm sure
- 59:57Speaker 5: JD agrees with me on that one. I Mean, it's
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: it's pretty evident how important he is that Santos a team.
- 1:00:03Speaker 3: Right now, we'll.
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: See what happens. I want to give it away from Cooch,
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: but I mean I love him. Cooch is my guy.
- 1:00:12Speaker 4: Do we have any more flowers we're given out?
- 1:00:14Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: One more flower gonna give out and the we'll call today.
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: Alexander Vatchkin five goals in his last three games. He
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: wrapped up his twentieth thirty goal season. Mike Gartner ranks
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: second in hockey history in that category's seventeen.
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: But you give to some you don't really want to
- 1:00:28Speaker 2: talk over.
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: I'm guessing, Well, it's been three straight years. I've made
- 1:00:32Speaker 4: a bet with Mike Rupp for a bottle of Camus
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: that he wouldn't at a certain point in the season
- 1:00:37Speaker 4: he wouldn't get thirty goals, And every single fucking time
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: I make the bet, and then he gets it with
- 1:00:41Speaker 4: like eight games left and he probably won't have a goal.
- 1:00:44Speaker 4: And I'm I am convinced he's watching and using that
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: as fuel every time.
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: You think you think he hears, but you would, Mike
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: rup And you know what.
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: Just.
- 1:00:56Speaker 4: It's all about me. If you haven't noticed all about me.
- 1:00:59Speaker 4: So goes so quick, Nick, because I have to give
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: flowers to somebody before we're done.
- 1:01:02Speaker 5: So yeah, he's always in his fucking JD's paying for
- 1:01:06Speaker 5: this bottle of Camis and that's it.
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: That's all he's thinking.
- 1:01:09Speaker 4: Him and Ruppers splitting it.
- 1:01:13Speaker 5: The only thing I had to add is I thought
- 1:01:15Speaker 5: it was amazing seeing his son right on the glass
- 1:01:17Speaker 5: after he scores thirty.
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: I thought that was I thought that was awesome. But
- 1:01:20Speaker 3: that was awesome.
- 1:01:21Speaker 4: Go ahead, JD, fucking go back to He's go back
- 1:01:23Speaker 4: to Russia with your fucking what he's about two he's
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: goal scoring titles, set up a pitch, cost me three
- 1:01:30Speaker 4: bottles of wine. Anyway, I'm gonna give flowers to real guy,
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: real man.
- 1:01:36Speaker 9: Uh.
- 1:01:36Speaker 4: Victor Arvidson. Wow, the Boston Bruins. Uh, he has nine
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: points in his last four games. He is somehow we
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: could not piss a drop in Edmonton and he has
- 1:01:51Speaker 4: really found his game here for Boston and they are
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: cooking right now. So big shout out to him, big
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: shout out to the Boston Bruins team. But Victor Arvidson
- 1:01:59Speaker 4: man doing doing the damn thing, and people chase them
- 1:02:03Speaker 4: out of Edmonton and you can play with the top guys,
- 1:02:06Speaker 4: and he is playing some good hockey right now.
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Once again thanks to Kevin Weeks, our special guests, thanks
