Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life,
- 0:05Speaker 1: just to touch to get you through. Yeah me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party. The bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode or Disgraceland to the other. The backyard to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt, our mission to uncover the truth, to
- 0:43Speaker 1: confront the myths, to reclaim the story. On this bonus episode,
- 0:46Speaker 1: we're giving a brief history of gun violence from music's past,
- 0:49Speaker 1: digging into the music that you listen to to lift
- 0:52Speaker 1: you up. Rewinding back from the Doctor John shooting to
- 0:55Speaker 1: the potential Martin Scorsese shooting, previewing next week's episode on
- 0:59Speaker 1: the and we get into your voicemails, text, dms, and
- 1:02Speaker 1: as always a whole lot of rosie. This is the
- 1:05Speaker 1: podcast for the musically obsessed, the outsiders, the independent thinkers
- 1:08Speaker 1: who know that the best history is the history that
- 1:11Speaker 1: gets buried. Disgrace Lands, where I tell the stories they
- 1:14Speaker 1: didn't want told, the kind you'll end up telling someone else.
- 1:16Speaker 1: All right, disc goes, let's get into it. Last night
- 1:33Speaker 1: I saw the trailer for a new documentary on HBO
- 1:36Speaker 1: called Thoughts and Prayers. The film examines active shooter preparedness
- 1:42Speaker 1: in modern American life, and it got me thinking about
- 1:46Speaker 1: all the rock stars who've lived and died by the gun,
- 1:49Speaker 1: by what Steve Earle called the devil's right hand. My
- 1:54Speaker 1: first pistol was a cap and ball colt shoot as
- 1:57Speaker 1: fast as lightning, but it loads of mtes slow, loads
- 2:00Speaker 1: of mites slow. As I soon found out, it can
- 2:03Speaker 1: get you into trouble, but it can't get you out.
- 2:06Speaker 1: So then I went and bought myself a cult forty
- 2:08Speaker 1: five called a peacemaker. But I never knew why. I
- 2:12Speaker 1: never knew why. I didn't understand. Mama said, the pistol
- 2:16Speaker 1: is the devil's right hand. Music history is outlaw history,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and this history is fascinating, something more kin to a
- 2:26Speaker 1: Scorsese movie than what was inside those history books that
- 2:30Speaker 1: they gave us in high school. So in this bonus episode,
- 2:33Speaker 1: let's dive into a brief history of violence gun violence
- 2:37Speaker 1: from music's past. We start with one of the most
- 2:41Speaker 1: influential musicians of the twentieth century and artist whose name
- 2:44Speaker 1: is almost completely lost to history because of a bullet.
- 2:49Speaker 1: James Pinetop Smith, a piano player whose boogie woogie style
- 2:54Speaker 1: back in the nineteen twenties led to the creation of
- 2:57Speaker 1: rock and roll. Pinetop literally invented the term boogie woogie,
- 3:01Speaker 1: and his style and even some of his lyrics can
- 3:04Speaker 1: be heard in those excellent Ray Charles Atlantic recordings from
- 3:08Speaker 1: early in Ray's career, songs like mess Around and What
- 3:12Speaker 1: I Say. Pinetop's future was wide open when he was
- 3:15Speaker 1: playing back in the late twenties, but a stray bullet
- 3:18Speaker 1: at a Chicago house party cut him down, ending his
- 3:21Speaker 1: career and his life at the age of just twenty five.
- 3:26Speaker 1: This was a decade after blues musician Led Belly shot
- 3:30Speaker 1: Will Stafford between the eyes and killed the man over
- 3:34Speaker 1: an argument. Led Belly did about eight years a hard
- 3:37Speaker 1: time before he was released on a pard in The
- 3:39Speaker 1: Texas governor at the time was reportedly moved enough by
- 3:42Speaker 1: a Led Belly performance to grant the musician and killer clemency.
- 3:48Speaker 1: On Christmas Day nineteen fifty four, R and B singer
- 3:51Speaker 1: Johnny Yace accidentally put a bullet in his head while
- 3:54Speaker 1: playing Russian Roulette by himself. In nineteen sixty three in
- 3:59Speaker 1: the Juke Joint, James Brown nearly shot Otis Redding, who
- 4:03Speaker 1: was on stage performing at the time. Now Otis wasn't
- 4:05Speaker 1: the target. Singer Joe Tex, who James Brown hated he
- 4:09Speaker 1: was the target. Both survived, but the legend of this
- 4:12Speaker 1: incident still looms as an example of the violent Chitlin
- 4:16Speaker 1: circuit from back in the day. In nineteen seventy two,
- 4:20Speaker 1: in one of Manhattan's East Village dives, jazz trumpeter Lee
- 4:24Speaker 1: Morgan was shot and killed by his wife, Helen, who,
- 4:27Speaker 1: after nursing her husband back from a debilitating heroin addiction,
- 4:32Speaker 1: was none too happy with Lee Morgan's flagrant philandering. Lee
- 4:37Speaker 1: Morgan could have survived his wife's bullet were it not
- 4:40Speaker 1: for the raging snowstorm outside Slugs Saloon, where he lay
- 4:44Speaker 1: bleeding out. The ambulance arrived too late to save the
- 4:47Speaker 1: horn player. And this story is friggin wild. I could
- 4:51Speaker 1: talk about this all day. More details on this coming
- 4:54Speaker 1: up for you guys in the exclusive all access section
- 4:57Speaker 1: of this after parties out, then I are going to
- 4:58Speaker 1: get into it over there, so stick around. You'll hear
- 5:01Speaker 1: that Sam Cook shot and killed Marvin Gay, shot and
- 5:06Speaker 1: killed John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Tupac, Biggie Selena, jam Master,
- 5:12Speaker 1: j die Back, Darryl. The list of musicians who died
- 5:14Speaker 1: by the gun goes on and on and on. The
- 5:19Speaker 1: eras change, the scenes changed, the style of music may change,
- 5:24Speaker 1: but the gun remains. Spade Cooley, Phil Spector, take K
- 5:29Speaker 1: forty seven, Jim Gordon, Roger Troutman, maybe Jerry Lelewis. All
- 5:35Speaker 1: these dudes, I'm not saying Jerry Lewis, but all the
- 5:38Speaker 1: other dudes, they all used the devil's right hand, as
- 5:40Speaker 1: Steve Earl said, to kill Doctor John this week's full
- 5:44Speaker 1: episode subject of Disgrace, and was nearly killed in a gunfight.
- 5:48Speaker 1: His hand was shot up and he was forced to
- 5:49Speaker 1: give up playing guitar and to become a piano player.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Perhaps that was something good that came from gun violence.
- 5:55Speaker 1: You can make that argument, I guess. Martin Scorsese, the
- 5:59Speaker 1: subject of our next rewind episode, not a musician, but
- 6:02Speaker 1: arguably the most rock and roll filmmaker of all time.
- 6:04Speaker 1: He had to be talked out of shooting his producer
- 6:07Speaker 1: on taxi driver by none other than Steven Spielberg, and
- 6:11Speaker 1: that story, as incredible as it is, Like the doctor
- 6:14Speaker 1: John story is revelatory, but neither story. They're not hard
- 6:19Speaker 1: to believe because the gun in gun violence has been
- 6:23Speaker 1: at the center of music history going back over one
- 6:27Speaker 1: hundred years. It's as much a part of the American
- 6:30Speaker 1: soundtrack as boogie woogie piano playing and jazz trumpets and
- 6:34Speaker 1: Otis Redding and Marvin Gay and all the rest. Because
- 6:37Speaker 1: music history is outlaw history, and personally, I can't get
- 6:42Speaker 1: enough of it. I'll be back after this with your calls, texts,
- 6:45Speaker 1: emails and more. All right, good people, of disgrace and
- 7:14Speaker 1: disc goes across the United States of America and beyond.
- 7:17Speaker 1: We are here hanging on the telephone, back in the
- 7:21Speaker 1: saddle again in the after party and talking about Doctor John.
- 7:25Speaker 1: This week's full episode subject of Disgraceland Doctor John the
- 7:29Speaker 1: Great mac Reveneck prompted the question of the week, which
- 7:32Speaker 1: was what music heals you? What music do you put
- 7:38Speaker 1: on to pull yourself out of those dark places that
- 7:41Speaker 1: James Elroy warned us about. Let's check out Ben from
- 7:45Speaker 1: the five four to one.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Hey, Jake, this is Ben from the five four to one.
- 7:50Speaker 2: I'm a counselor and I love music and art, and
- 7:53Speaker 2: I definitely use music to help my mood. But I
- 7:57Speaker 2: have different ones, like when i'm really and I just
- 8:01Speaker 2: I don't know what to do. I'm it's feeling really low.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I love to listen to old Delta blues like let
- 8:06Speaker 2: Belly and Son House up to like Muddy Water, So
- 8:09Speaker 2: I love that that genre right there. And then if
- 8:12Speaker 2: I'm angry, I want to listen I want to listen
- 8:15Speaker 2: to Rage against the Machine. I want to listen to Tool,
- 8:19Speaker 2: you know, I want to listen to things that kind
- 8:21Speaker 2: of get that aggression out. But when I'm happy, man,
- 8:23Speaker 2: I want to listen to Grateful Bed. I want to
- 8:26Speaker 2: listen to Sublime. I want to listen to Shoot Hank
- 8:30Speaker 2: Williams Junior or Dolly Parton. I mean, it's the vibe
- 8:34Speaker 2: of the person, this the vibe of the band more
- 8:36Speaker 2: than the genre when it comes to being happy. I've
- 8:39Speaker 2: been listening to you since your first episode.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Man.
- 8:41Speaker 2: I found you just based on the picture on the
- 8:45Speaker 2: iTunes there, and I hadn't heard anybody produced show like you.
- 8:49Speaker 2: I didn't anybody tell a story like you with the
- 8:52Speaker 2: music and the beat and the man I've been hooked
- 8:55Speaker 2: ever since. Brother, you're doing a great job.
- 8:57Speaker 1: Ben. You and I have the exact pop approach, and
- 9:02Speaker 1: in regards to calibrating our emotions with music, it looks
- 9:07Speaker 1: like you reinforce the emotion with your music selection. I
- 9:13Speaker 1: kind of do the opposite when I'm when I'm sad,
- 9:15Speaker 1: at least I don't. I don't listen to sad music.
- 9:18Speaker 1: It just I just I want to go totally opposite.
- 9:20Speaker 1: I want to listen to Casey in the Sunshine Band,
- 9:22Speaker 1: Like I mentioned, I want to listen to listen to
- 9:24Speaker 1: Chic by the Way. The just you know this is
- 9:27Speaker 1: an unpaid endorsement here, but the Studio fifty four station
- 9:30Speaker 1: on Sirius is mine and Zes' new obsession. It's really
- 9:35Speaker 1: hard to find for me anyways. For some of you
- 9:38Speaker 1: it won't be hard, but for me it's it's hard
- 9:40Speaker 1: to find obscure disco on the fly. I mean, I
- 9:44Speaker 1: know it's out there, I'm not a connoisseur of it.
- 9:47Speaker 1: And if I go to any of the streamers and
- 9:48Speaker 1: I and I try to search for disco that I like,
- 9:51Speaker 1: that's maybe new to me that I haven't heard. That's soulful.
- 9:54Speaker 1: That's not just like all the shit we've heard a
- 9:57Speaker 1: million times. It's it's hard to find that stuff on
- 9:59Speaker 1: spot and elsewhere. But I got to say the Studio
- 10:02Speaker 1: fifty four station does a good job with the disco
- 10:05Speaker 1: choice nugs and it will lift you up out of
- 10:09Speaker 1: your funk. All right. I'm like the Delta Blues there, Ben,
- 10:12Speaker 1: I can't. I can't go there when I'm sad, but
- 10:14Speaker 1: I hear you. You know there was a time when
- 10:16Speaker 1: I did. Just not anymore. I'm more with you when
- 10:20Speaker 1: you're feeling happy already and you're putting on the dead
- 10:24Speaker 1: or when you're you know, you're in the gym and
- 10:25Speaker 1: you're you're rocking out to rage. I get that. I
- 10:27Speaker 1: get that, but I can't reinforce the sadness with the
- 10:31Speaker 1: sad vibes. Nonetheless, thanks for your call, Ben, appreciate you.
- 10:34Speaker 1: Let's check out Scotty from the three one three.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Hey, Jacob Scotty from the three one three Yo, What
- 10:41Speaker 3: up Detroit? I wanted to answer a question regarding music
- 10:46Speaker 3: that heals you, and I agree with you. You know,
- 10:50Speaker 3: when I'm feeling like I need to be healed by music,
- 10:52Speaker 3: it's a lot of upbeat stuff like funk, soul, R
- 10:56Speaker 3: and B. But I wanted to share with you something
- 10:59Speaker 3: that healed me in.
- 11:00Speaker 2: A time when I really needed it.
- 11:02Speaker 3: Back in two thousand and seven, I was in Afghanistan
- 11:06Speaker 3: and I discovered a record by Eels. Remember Eels Nova
- 11:11Speaker 3: came for the soul Well. They had an album called
- 11:15Speaker 3: Blinking Life and Other Revelations. And this album is very long,
- 11:19Speaker 3: very underrated, and it is a journey to listen to.
- 11:23Speaker 3: But towards the probably the second third of the album,
- 11:28Speaker 3: there's a track on it called hey man, now You're
- 11:31Speaker 3: really living And I encourage anyone who is listening to
- 11:35Speaker 3: this to reach out and listen to that track. During
- 11:41Speaker 3: the many years that I spent in Afghanistan and Iraq,
- 11:44Speaker 3: anytime I was feeling down, which was a lot of times,
- 11:48Speaker 3: I would put that particular song on and then I
- 11:52Speaker 3: would cry, and then I would be somewhat healed. Twenty
- 11:56Speaker 3: years later, I still listen to that song whenever I
- 11:59Speaker 3: need a quick pick.
- 12:00Speaker 1: So thanks for listening, Scotti, Thanks for the call. Man
- 12:04Speaker 1: love Eels. Don't know this record, I say, I love Eels.
- 12:08Speaker 1: My relationship with Eels is every time I've ever heard
- 12:10Speaker 1: a song I've gone like, oh, what's this? This is
- 12:12Speaker 1: very interesting. I kind of like it a lot, and
- 12:14Speaker 1: then I find out if it's the Eels, and then
- 12:16Speaker 1: I don't dig in any deeper. So I'm going to
- 12:19Speaker 1: take your message here as a prompt to listen to
- 12:21Speaker 1: this album. I'm going to check it out and to
- 12:24Speaker 1: check out Hey man, now you're really living as well.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Appreciate you sharing your story here. Thank you for your service, Scotty.
- 12:33Speaker 1: Appreciate you. If anyone out there listening right now knows
- 12:36Speaker 1: Mark from Eels, shoot him this episode. I'm sure he'd
- 12:39Speaker 1: appreciate hearing what Scotty has to say about his music
- 12:42Speaker 1: and how it helped him while he was overseas in
- 12:45Speaker 1: a dark place. Thanks for the message, Scotty. By the way,
- 12:48Speaker 1: I love the Eels tune that was in Black Rabbit
- 12:50Speaker 1: recently Prize Fighter. See I know that song. All right,
- 12:53Speaker 1: Let's check out Chris for the six to one to two.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Hey, Jake, this is Chris. Call him from the six
- 12:58Speaker 4: to one to two. That's the question about what band
- 13:01Speaker 4: or music could revived you and I have an experience
- 13:04Speaker 4: at the Minnesota Zoo with Government Mule. I had just
- 13:07Speaker 4: gotten out of jail that morning after a dui. My
- 13:09Speaker 4: life was not good at all. I was going down
- 13:12Speaker 4: the wrong track, and it all hit me at once that,
- 13:15Speaker 4: you know what, Life's pretty simple and all you gotta
- 13:17Speaker 4: do is go see good music and enjoy the beauty
- 13:19Speaker 4: that's all around us and do the best you can.
- 13:21Speaker 4: And uh, that was about twenty five years ago, and
- 13:24Speaker 4: my life's been stellar ever since and it keeps getting better.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Thanks Rod, keep doing what you're doing.
- 13:29Speaker 2: I appreciate it.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Chris my man, you're calling in from your your own
- 13:33Speaker 1: episode of disgrace THEND here. Brother, You're absolutely right. Life
- 13:37Speaker 1: is pretty simple. Just listen to the music, happy to
- 13:41Speaker 1: hear that music set you straight and that you are
- 13:43Speaker 1: doing well. Six one seven nine six six six three eight. Guys,
- 13:48Speaker 1: you can hit us up anytime voicemail and text. Let
- 13:51Speaker 1: us know how you're doing, let us know what you're
- 13:53Speaker 1: up to, give us your thoughts on the question of
- 13:55Speaker 1: the week eager leave a voicemail like Chris and Scottie
- 13:59Speaker 1: and Ben who we just heard from, Or you can
- 14:03Speaker 1: send us a text like the seven seven five who
- 14:07Speaker 1: writes in, Hey, Jake, your cadence feels a little higher
- 14:10Speaker 1: in the doctor John episode. Was this a conscious decision
- 14:13Speaker 1: or pure accident? Uh? Interesting, I didn't catch that, not
- 14:20Speaker 1: on purpose. One thing that has changed recently in the
- 14:23Speaker 1: last couple of months is I switched up the way
- 14:25Speaker 1: I record. For the last couple of years, I've been
- 14:28Speaker 1: standing up in a booth doing it. Prior to that,
- 14:31Speaker 1: I was sitting down. I'm back to sitting down. And
- 14:33Speaker 1: not only am I sitting down, I'm sitting down at
- 14:35Speaker 1: my desk as opposed to sitting down in a booth.
- 14:38Speaker 1: And maybe it's freed me up a little. I don't know,
- 14:41Speaker 1: but a high cadence doesn't indicate me being freed, indicates
- 14:46Speaker 1: me being kind of cooped up. So I have no idea,
- 14:49Speaker 1: but I appreciate the text. Thanks seven seven five five
- 14:53Speaker 1: to one two writes saying, Hey Jake, this is Nathan
- 14:55Speaker 1: from Houston via five to one two. You asked where
- 14:58Speaker 1: we listened to the podcast, and I thought you might.
- 15:00Speaker 1: I appreciate that. I did a small road trip across
- 15:02Speaker 1: half of Texas. It was listening to the podcast while
- 15:06Speaker 1: I was going to a fencing tournament and coming back.
- 15:08Speaker 1: It made the four hour drive go a lot easier.

- 18:25Speaker 1: right after this all, right disc. Goes we often do
- 18:43Speaker 1: recommendations here in the after. Party i've been doing them
- 18:46Speaker 1: for a, while AND i really love giving book, recommendations movie,
- 18:51Speaker 1: recommendations music. RECOMMENDATIONS i know you guys like the. Recommendations
- 18:55Speaker 1: they become very. Popular get a lot of, feedback you,
- 18:58Speaker 1: guys send me your rat it's. Great here's what, happens,
- 19:01Speaker 1: THOUGH i get two lost in the, recommendations and it
- 19:07Speaker 1: eats up a lot of, time specifically in these after.
- 19:10Speaker 1: Parties it makes the eff phras go way. Long so
- 19:13Speaker 1: but then THEN i, GO i can't do, this, OKAY
- 19:15Speaker 1: i just got like and THEN i don't do any
- 19:17Speaker 1: recommendations for like a month or two or something like.
- 19:19Speaker 1: That so it's JUST i think WHAT i want to.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Do i'm gonna do this thing in every. Episode i'm
- 19:23Speaker 1: gonna try to do this thing where from now, On,
- 19:25Speaker 1: Okay i'm gonna do a quick recommendation segment one, book one,
- 19:31Speaker 1: record one. Documentary i'm gonna try and tie them to
- 19:36Speaker 1: whatever episodes we're talking about this. Week, Okay we've got
- 19:39Speaker 1: A scorsese episode coming up in the rewind slot this,
- 19:43Speaker 1: week and then we've got the Last waltz episode coming
- 19:46Speaker 1: up next. Week So scorsese is gonna be the theme
- 19:49Speaker 1: of my recommendations this. Week AND i know that the
- 19:53Speaker 1: New scorsese Doc Mister scorsese On apple is not an
- 19:59Speaker 1: unknown commodity for you. Guys but if for some, reason
- 20:03Speaker 1: you guys have not any of you are A scorsese,
- 20:05Speaker 1: fan you haven't seen this, Yet Paul, Prue i'm talking to.
- 20:08Speaker 1: You run, okay don't. Walk it's, incredible it's, so, so so.
- 20:15Speaker 1: Good so that's the doc, recommendation Mister. Scorsese for the
- 20:20Speaker 1: book That i'm, Recommending It's Made, men which is the
- 20:23Speaker 1: story of the making Of, goodfellas Which zeth asked me about,
- 20:28Speaker 1: Yesterday and turns Out i've read it AND i just
- 20:31Speaker 1: FORGOT i read. IT i read it so long. Ago
- 20:33Speaker 1: but there's information in this book THAT i forgot about
- 20:35Speaker 1: That zeth reminded me of about the songs That scorsese
- 20:39Speaker 1: chose to be in the soundtrack For. Goodfellas it didn't
- 20:43Speaker 1: make it into that film that's in that. Book it's
- 20:45Speaker 1: a great reason to read the, book among many other
- 20:48Speaker 1: reasons made men by good. Fellaws But i'm gonna talk
- 20:50Speaker 1: more about. That that little piece of info there on
- 20:52Speaker 1: The scorsese soundtrack in a bit put a pin in.
- 20:54Speaker 1: That my, recommendation my music, recommendation my, record my album
- 21:00Speaker 1: recommendation Is jericho by The. Band, now this album has
- 21:06Speaker 1: nothing to do With Martin. Scorsese Martin Scorsese's Cocaine Buddy
- 21:09Speaker 1: Robbie robertson isn't even on this. Album it came out
- 21:12Speaker 1: in the, nineties again Without Robbie. Robertson, however it's a great,
- 21:17Speaker 1: record and it has a, scorching scorching version of the
- 21:22Speaker 1: band Doing Bruce Springsteen's Atlantic city and it's a great.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Version but it's not even the best version of the
- 21:29Speaker 1: band doing this is a live version that you can
- 21:30Speaker 1: find of them doing this tune that is also. FANTASTIC
- 21:33Speaker 1: i think it's From Austin City limits or something like.
- 21:36Speaker 1: That don't quote me on that, piece but, anyways just
- 21:39Speaker 1: check Out jericho by The. Band it's. Fantastic it's early nineties,
- 21:43Speaker 1: record really really. Good all, right those are my recks
- 21:46Speaker 1: for this, week Mister scorsese for Documentary Made, men the
- 21:52Speaker 1: book about the making Of, goodfellas that's my Book, wreck
- 21:55Speaker 1: And jericho by the band is my Album. Wreck if
- 21:58Speaker 1: you guys want to recommend one, book one, record or
- 22:01Speaker 1: one documentary or anything else to, me hit me up
- 22:03Speaker 1: six one seven nine oh six six'. Six. THREE okay
- 22:07Speaker 1: i gotta bring you guys up to speed on. Something
- 22:08Speaker 1: here one of my favorite things on the planet is
- 22:12Speaker 1: the convergence of great music, and film and we talk
- 22:18Speaker 1: about it, a lot not in any formal sort, of
- 22:20Speaker 1: way though it's tangential to the music history and true
- 22:23Speaker 1: crime conversation that we're having on an. Ongoing, basis however
- 22:28Speaker 1: You know i'm a huge. Film nerd you know who my.
- 22:31Speaker 1: Guys are you know the Same about Zeth, so ZETH and,
- 22:34Speaker 1: i thought why don't we do this. New show we'll
- 22:37Speaker 1: do it, For fun we'll. Do it we'll do it
- 22:39Speaker 1: for our all, access members and it will be just
- 22:42Speaker 1: about the greatest music in the greatest movies of, all
- 22:46Speaker 1: time all the, great soundtracks the great, needle drops the,
- 22:51Speaker 1: incredible scores the albums that get by with super weird,
- 22:55Speaker 1: minimal scores anywhere music meets film in an. Interesting way
- 23:01Speaker 1: that's what we're going to talk about in. This podcast
- 23:03Speaker 1: we're going to talk about one film, per episode and
- 23:06Speaker 1: we're going to talk about the music in. That film
- 23:09Speaker 1: the new podcast is a. Video podcast it's called this
- 23:13Speaker 1: film Should Be, played loud which is a obvious reference
- 23:17Speaker 1: to the very first frame of the. Last waltz you
- 23:21Speaker 1: see in, huge letters this film should be, played loud
- 23:23Speaker 1: come across, the screen and you know to buckle up
- 23:26Speaker 1: and to turn your television up. To eleven so the
- 23:29Speaker 1: first episode, we filmed we did this, last night was
- 23:33Speaker 1: on The. Movie, goodfellas okay now you Can imagine goodfellas
- 23:37Speaker 1: is like the greatest. Soundtrack ever there's a lot of
- 23:40Speaker 1: interesting footnotes music footnotes in. That movie SONGS like i
- 23:45Speaker 1: mentioned before that didn't make it into the Film that
- 23:48Speaker 1: scorsese wanted in, the film actual musicians who are in,
- 23:52Speaker 1: the film relatives of musicians who are in. The film
- 23:55Speaker 1: the way In which scorsese uses music in this film is,
- 23:59Speaker 1: completely novel and it's gone on, to influence, you know
- 24:03Speaker 1: all of my favorite filmmakers, after that, pretty much not all,
- 24:06Speaker 1: of them but A lot the Music in goodfellas is
- 24:10Speaker 1: groundbreaking in so many, different ways and we spent about
- 24:14Speaker 1: forty five minutes talking about it. Last night we, could
- 24:17Speaker 1: honestly we could have spent three hours talking. About it
- 24:19Speaker 1: we had a lot of fun in the, lead up
- 24:21Speaker 1: sort of sharing, our notes talking about our, favorite scenes,
- 24:24Speaker 1: et cetera and a lot of that is going to
- 24:26Speaker 1: come across. On screen so that is going to be
- 24:28Speaker 1: available for you guys in a couple weeks in the Middle.
- 24:31Speaker 1: Of december it's going to be part of Our all.
