- 0:00Our number 2, Miller and Condon welcome back just past 1:00 on a
- 0:03Monday. Trent Condon, Ken Miller here
- 0:05until just before 2:00. At that time off the bench that
- 0:09comes up. Lucas Strange, Sean Roberts 2
- 0:12until 5. Overtime Iowa, 5 to 6.
- 0:14Wait looking Bill. Bottom of the hour.
- 0:15Bill Seals momentarily. Tomorrow we're going to talk to
- 0:18Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com on baseball.
- 0:21Did you see CB Buckner get embarrassed behind home plate in
- 0:24Cincinnati? I did not.
- 0:25Oh. It's priceless.
- 0:26He tried to ring ingenio Suarez or something like that.
- 0:33Suarez is right up twice in a row and Suarez thatches his
- 0:37helmet, wants a wants a look, was overturned, was a ball steps
- 0:41back in the batter's box, tried to ring him up again.
- 0:44Suarez says not so fast, goes right back to his helmet.
- 0:47Buckner is going to be embarrassed game after game
- 0:51after game. And I am here for it.
- 0:54Like I think most baseball fans are 'cause this guy's the worst.
- 0:57Hernandez got out at the right time.
- 0:58Yes, absolutely. He got out at the right time.
- 1:01Let's get Bill Seals in here. Talk some Iowa State with Bill
- 1:04Football, basketball is over. Women still in the news and Bill
- 1:08Seals joins us. Bill Trenton Kent, thanks for
- 1:10coming on. How are you?
- 1:12I'm doing great guys, just enjoying being back home after I
- 1:17think it was 12 days and nights in a hotel this month so getting
- 1:22reacquainted with home again. No, I get it.
- 1:25I wish you would had to stay in extra night.
- 1:26I don't think you would have been packing for Indianapolis
- 1:29because Michigan's a different animal.
- 1:32But we'll we'll never know. So let's go back to the game
- 1:35Friday night, Bill. I was, I was absolutely
- 1:38convinced Iowa State was going to beat Tennessee and then take
- 1:42their chances against Michigan. What what happened, Bill?
- 1:45Obviously the rebounding, offensive rebounding.
- 1:48They just killed Iowa State on the glass.
- 1:50There were some big dudes out there.
- 1:52Obviously not having Jefferson was a blow.
- 1:55I don't think it would have made a difference as far as whether
- 1:57the team would have played again or not.
- 1:59He certainly would have made a difference.
- 2:01He's a good player. But could you pinpoint where it
- 2:03went wrong for Iowa State on Friday night?
- 2:06Well, I think it all starts on the, on, on the offensive glass,
- 2:10just the the rebounding in general.
- 2:12And we knew that was going to be an issue coming in for a team
- 2:16without Joshua Jefferson. Likely it ends up being, you
- 2:21know, pretty sizable difference in that game.
- 2:24I think 4222 was the was the tally in 17 offensive rebounds
- 2:30for Tennessee. And there were just so many
- 2:33times there were Iowa State did what it needed to do, felt like
- 2:37in the half court to get a stop to maybe get out in transition,
- 2:42get some buckets that way. And it was just a second or
- 2:44third chance opportunity. You know, it wasn't even like
- 2:48they were they were swinging it back out for a three.
- 2:51It was just like a tip in just a clear path to the basket and a
- 2:54tip in a number of those Aquara carry.
- 2:59I mean, they just state them up on the boards.
- 3:00But yeah, it was it was a huge loss obviously with Jefferson.
- 3:04And I think it as you saw it play out certainly in limited
- 3:08Iowa State ceiling because I think with Jefferson, they they
- 3:12probably get by Tennessee in that game.
- 3:16And then, you know, you take your chances with Michigan.
- 3:19We saw what all ended up happening there.
- 3:21But I tell you what Iowa State would have loved to have take it
- 3:24taken its chances at 100% in that game.
- 3:27Absolutely. And you know, there's a lot of
- 3:30equating back going back a dozen years ago to 2014 and playing
- 3:34that Sweet 16 game. The loss to UConn, they went on
- 3:36to win the national championship that year was.
- 3:38That the Dustin Hoagg toothpick game.
- 3:41Was that the year? Might have been, but yeah, the
- 3:42end wasn't there and. It was in New York, I think.
- 3:45It was yeah. And MSG people, cyclo fans
- 3:49believe that they would have won a national championship.
- 3:52Thing wasn't healthy. Did the what happened though to
- 3:54Tennessee against Michigan did that may be negated or maybe as
- 3:59we get more a little bit more far removed, cyclo fans will be
- 4:01working themselves up with a lather again.
- 4:03Just Michigan was such a behemoth there and obviously
- 4:06it's different with Jefferson. Does it feel different I guess
- 4:08than 2014 though to you? Well, yeah, I, I think probably
- 4:13I, I think pretty, pretty similar.
- 4:16You know, it's just it's tough and and we all saw what Nyang
- 4:21meant meant to that team. And I mean, they'll Iowa State
- 4:25fans, I think they'll be lamenting this whole thing for
- 4:28for a while, even even with with with Michigan and and what I
- 4:33mean the machine that they are and, and how they just
- 4:35steamrolled Tennessee. I still think Iowa State with a
- 4:39with a healthy Jefferson, they they keep that a little bit
- 4:42closer game and you know, that would have been a one versus A2.
- 4:46So. And I think, yeah, I mean, Iowa
- 4:50State fans over the years, injuries and in situations like
- 4:54this, a lot of it seems like a lot of what ifs for for this
- 4:58team. And it was Iowa State's best
- 5:01team too. I mean, it's not like they're
- 5:03going into next season where they just lost a guy and they
- 5:07come go out in the Sweet 16 and you've got a Lipsy and Jefferson
- 5:11coming back, Milan coming back. I mean it kind of feels like
- 5:15this was T JS best team. You know, I'm not discounting
- 5:19what their chances are for next season.
- 5:21I think that'll that'll begin to play itself out whether Milan
- 5:24comes back or not. But you know, this was T JS best
- 5:27team. It kind of felt like for the
- 5:29last few years they were building up to a run like this.
- 5:33And then to have it, you know, yeah, an injury to Jefferson
- 5:37happened, what, 2 1/2 minutes into the Tennessee State game.
- 5:40I mean, it kind of feels like the Cyclones were were cheated
- 5:43out of out of out of something big here.
- 5:46Yeah, Keyshawn Gilbert injured last year as well.
- 5:48So it seems to get him at the at the wrong time.
- 5:51So where are you on Montchilovich, do you think?
- 5:54And and obviously he's, you know, he's going to kick the
- 5:56tires. He's going to see what's there.
- 5:59Not that mock drafts or the be all end alls.
- 6:01I have no idea who's doing them, whether they have any
- 6:05credibility or not, but boy, you don't see a lot of Manchilovich
- 6:09on very on on. You know, it's not like 75% of
- 6:13mock drafts have Manchilovich going late 1st, early 2nd.
- 6:16A lot of them don't have him in, but I don't think he's an NBA
- 6:19player. He's got a great shot and and
- 6:20yeah, they maybe he'll have more time to get it off, but you got
- 6:23to, there's other things you got to do.
- 6:26I'd be surprised if he if he keeps his name in.
- 6:29Where are you? Yeah, I think I I would, I would
- 6:32probably side with what you're you're saying there, Kenny.
- 6:35I think that I think it just depends on what meet Milan
- 6:40wants. I mean, he's he's had a great
- 6:42three-year run at Iowa State. They're they're losing some big
- 6:45players around him. There's some question marks that
- 6:49next year's teams going to be pretty young, really make
- 6:53between the freshman and sophomore classes.
- 6:55So is it time for him to make that next step and, and, and go
- 6:59ahead and, and go and get picked in the second round?
- 7:03I mean, you, you could probably say that he would be, I would
- 7:06think he would be a guy as a potential like a two way type of
- 7:10player, sign that two way contract to get into the right
- 7:15situation and, and let the chips fall where they may.
- 7:18Or does he maybe have some unfinished business and in the
- 7:21in the college level? You know, he one thing he
- 7:23brought up to me when I talked to him in the locker room after
- 7:27the game on Friday, as he felt like these three tournament runs
- 7:31that Iowa states had their last games have been stinkers.
- 7:35That the stinker is the word that he used.
- 7:37He's, he's felt like he hasn't really gone out like he's wanted
- 7:42to these three years. So maybe a sense of unfinished
- 7:45business. He did tell me, however, that in
- 7:49addition to that, he he would at some point enter his name into
- 7:54the draft and test the waters. I followed that up with the are
- 7:58you planning on, you know, if you if you don't stay in the
- 8:01draft, is it going to be back to Iowa State and not in the
- 8:03portal? And he told me yes.
- 8:05So I think that is good news for the cyclones that he I mean, he
- 8:08could command a pretty good chunk of change to to to
- 8:13transfer to go somewhere in the portal.
- 8:15But I think he likes well, he loves that what T JS done and
- 8:19got into that a little bit post game.
- 8:22So I, I think, you know, maybe some unfinished business would
- 8:25bring him back to Ames and I don't think it will be elsewhere
- 8:28in college if he does decide to come back.
- 8:31Bill, you wrote about after the game taming Lipsey and his
- 8:34legacy at Iowa State glowing things no surprise from Otsel
- 8:38Burger and and there's always plenty of that.
- 8:41We hear nothing but great things about him.
- 8:43We know what a basketball player he is, but you also got to know
- 8:46him obviously away from it and though on camera doing
- 8:49interviews and the like and hear nothing but great things.
- 8:51That guy, just an absolute, absolute winner there.
- 8:53We'll see what his future looks like basketball wise, but take
- 8:56us through and not just four years going back to his high
- 8:59school level. And I know you got to know him
- 9:00at that time as well, Bill. And just being able to cover
- 9:03Tamen Lipsy. Yeah, I mean, you, you, you go
- 9:07all the way back to his junior high days and and then do
- 9:10freshman year about this kid from Ames and everybody talking
- 9:14about obviously what Ames high schools produced over the years.
- 9:20And he was the latest phenom and ended up suffering that
- 9:24devastating injury. And he was like a five star USA
- 9:28Basketball guy. I think in fact, he his injury,
- 9:31he sustained I I think it might have even been in that Team USA
- 9:36setting that summer of his freshman year, if my memory
- 9:40serves me correctly. I think that's what 7-8 years
- 9:43ago now, it's been been ancient history.
- 9:45But you know, he rehabbed that. He didn't get the exposure.
- 9:50I think that he was wanting coming out with that freshman,
- 9:55sophomore year, he just kind of gradually starts, you know, he
- 9:59got got himself back into back to 100% and I think it was the
- 10:04perfect kind of the perfect fit. You know, Iowa State with TJ
- 10:08coming in needed someone like a Lipsy early on And and you know,
- 10:12Taman, Iowa State went all in on him.
- 10:15There were probably weren't well, there were not as many
- 10:18schools all in on him as they probably would have been 8th
- 10:24grade, 9th grade year when he was like a top what 5 star top
- 10:281015 player, probably whoever did the rankings of the 8th
- 10:32graders or whatever that you know, and that that time period.
- 10:36But he was a five star future five star blue chip guy and it
- 10:40just all worked out. He ended up in Iowa State, a
- 10:43perfect fit. And you know, now I think what
- 10:46is it after 10 years, I think he's going to have his name in
- 10:49the rafters. He's a four year player, Iowa
- 10:52State graduate and go on to a big things, not not just, you
- 10:57know, in the basketball career, whatever he ends up doing there,
- 11:00but in in life, I mean, he's a guy that's going to be a great
- 11:03ambassador for Iowa State moving forward.
- 11:07I couldn't imagine a worse way to make a living than ranking
- 11:10eighth graders. By the way, What a terrible job,
- 11:13An eighth grader. Unbelievable.
- 11:16There were services, probably. No.
- 11:17I'm sure there were years ago. Yeah, absolutely.
- 11:20And the parents of those eighth graders eating it up and
- 11:22bitching the whole time. So what, does he have coaching
- 11:26in his future? Do you think?
- 11:27Bill, does Lipsy come off as a guy who wants to, you know, stay
- 11:31involved? And if it's not playing it, do
- 11:33you know if he's interested in becoming a head coach?
- 11:36You know, it wouldn't surprise me.
- 11:37Kenny, I I think he he certainly has that.
- 11:41I think he has that vibe about him.
- 11:43You know, we'll we'll see what the future full holds for him.
- 11:48I think that he he's going to try and stick it out, play, play
- 11:52basketball, keep that career going as long as he can.
- 11:56You know, one thing he did talk talk to us about on the post
- 11:59game on Friday is just how it's not going to be the same for
- 12:03him. You know, going into a
- 12:05professional setting versus the college setting, How in in
- 12:09college you're around your guys, your teammates, your coaches.
- 12:13Seems like when you're not in class, you're around your guys.
- 12:16It's not going to be like that in the pros.
- 12:18He kind of lamented that a little bit, how it's kind of the
- 12:21end of end of this phase of basketball and you get into a
- 12:25professional setting and it's going to be entirely different.
- 12:27So it does make you wonder how how the pro career plays out.
- 12:33You know, if he ends up out of the game in four or five years,
- 12:37who knows, maybe he does come back as like a grad transfer and
- 12:40Iowa State, I know TJ, he's probably planning on being at
- 12:44Iowa State in four or five years that he would love to have team
- 12:47and come back as like a grad transfer, a great grad transfer,
- 12:51like a a grad assistant kind of guy.
- 12:53Maybe if he's going to go after a Masters at that point.
- 12:57One question, we got to see a little bit of Nelson at the end
- 13:01of the year after the injury. What have you heard about Mason
- 13:04Williams during this red shirt year?
- 13:05Maybe the reason that Nelson ended up on the roster is how
- 13:08that kind of all came together with the injury that he had
- 13:11coming in as a transfer last season.
- 13:13Is Williams a guy that is anticipated to be a big part of
- 13:16next year's team? I think so.
- 13:19I think so Trent, you look at the the backcourt, the numbers
- 13:23there. I think at probably the best
- 13:26case scenario for him as he obviously he cracks the starting
- 13:30lineup and, and, and plays a role in that lineup from day
- 13:34one. I think even worst case scenario
- 13:37for him, he ends up like a Nate Heisey type of guy as a as a
- 13:42he's got that similar frame as Heisey too at 65, I believe
- 13:4519195. He's got a a similar frame as
- 13:49Heisey probably comes in maybe in that six man role would be
- 13:52the worst case scenario even, But I think he's a he's a
- 13:55rotational guy If he comes back next year.
- 13:58Had a great season at at Eastern Washington before transferring
- 14:04almost 14 points a game. I think and that you know all
- 14:08indications where he was playing hurt that sophomore season too
- 14:12and going through a lot of stuff injury wise, still almost
- 14:15averages 14 points a game. I think he because he's back
- 14:19healthy now, he was practicing scout team guy down the stretch.
- 14:22So it get you just look at with with Bateman coming back, with
- 14:27Tori coming back, they've got they've got some some talented
- 14:32freshman coming. And I think Yusuf Gray with that
- 14:34injury, I'm not sure what they could expect from him next
- 14:38season. But Wiggins you got you got to
- 14:39look at him as a guy who could be a rotational type player
- 14:43coming into that back court. So, but yeah, with Williams,
- 14:47he'll be a guy with two seasons of eligibility and I think he's
- 14:50a a rotational player for Iowa State if he comes.
- 14:53Back yeah, you mentioned and reminds you Nate Heisey what
- 14:56what a way for Heisey to go on. Obviously didn't go out getting
- 14:59to the play Michigan for a chance to get to the Final Four,
- 15:02but man, oh man, he averaged what, about 18 points, I think
- 15:06in the three games in the tournament.
- 15:08What an NCAA Tournament for Nate Heisey.
- 15:10His final collegiate eligibility.
- 15:14Yeah, you look at all those guys, the urgency and and there
- 15:17there was none that had more urgency than Nate Heisey in that
- 15:21three-game stretch. And and I think it just
- 15:24intensified even more when Jefferson goes out and Iowa
- 15:28State has to play small and it against Tennessee.
- 15:32Gosh, I mean, he was aggressive. I mean, as as aggressive as
- 15:36you've seen him during his his run with the Cyclone.
- 15:41So it makes you wonder how much uglier that game against the
- 15:45Volunteers get if they don't have Heisey show up with the
- 15:49type of game that he had. And that just was an anchor for
- 15:53Iowa State in the postseason. Bill, you ready for spring
- 15:57football? Let's do it.
- 16:00I'm, I'm coming, I'm coming around.
- 16:02We get we'll get coordinators on Wednesday.
- 16:06We'll get a couple of players. So yeah, I'm going to I'm have a
- 16:09couple days here putting together some maybe a little
- 16:13bit. Well, I'm putting together a
- 16:14post mortem on basketball. Looking ahead, some recruiting,
- 16:19football recruiting and yeah, we'll have that availability on
- 16:23Wednesday and, and get coordinators and, and kind of
- 16:26feel like officially shifting gears into football mode in a
- 16:29couple days. You know, Bill, it's crazy
- 16:31because most years it's not that you're on cruise control, but
- 16:35you know, the roster, you know the team, you know, all right,
- 16:37maybe they're they're struggling at outside linebacker.
- 16:40There's question marks there. I mean the whole thing.
- 16:42I mean your your list of questions has got to be a mile
- 16:44long. Yeah, yeah, more, more time than
- 16:48we're going to get. We're going to get 15 minutes
- 16:49with Bobbitt. We're going to get 15 minutes
- 16:51with Roll. So, yeah, I mean, what we'll get
- 16:55Carson Willick, that'll be an interesting story.
- 16:58He's one of those guys that did come back.
- 17:00We don't need a we don't need a name tag or a lanyard on on
- 17:04Willick to know who he is. So Cameron Pettaway, he'll be
- 17:07another one we'll get on Wednesday.
- 17:09But yeah, I mean, it's it's an entirely different feel.
- 17:13I've been doing this doing this a long time since the 1999
- 17:18season. And it's unlike any other
- 17:20offseason that I've that I've ever experienced.
- 17:23So it just seems like you're just just take it week by week
- 17:27here this offseason and navigating some different,
- 17:32different waters than than we have before.
- 17:34No doubt one on women soups will let you go.
- 17:37Obviously, there's still a chapter or two perhaps to be
- 17:40written when it comes to Iowa State women.
- 17:43Kenzie Hair. The latest there's I think 3 of
- 17:46the roster still remain, including Audie Crooks.
- 17:48And we still have not heard from as of yet.
- 17:50Pollard and Fenley both not publicly commenting as of yet.
- 17:55I know Birchie's been not hounding them, but certainly,
- 17:58you know, making querying them if they would like to talk.
- 18:02Both have declined to this point.
- 18:03Where are we going here, Bill? I mean, something, something has
- 18:06to happen. The transfer portal officially
- 18:08opens Wednesday. Trent tells me something's got
- 18:11to happen in the next 24 hours, does it not?
- 18:15Well, you've got to think that they, they, yeah, I mean, got to
- 18:18come out with something here at, at, at at some point.
- 18:22With only three scholarship players returning.
- 18:26I, I don't think it's any mystery that Coach Finley, the
- 18:29legendary leader of the program, probably going to retire after
- 18:34next season if something unforeseen doesn't happen.
- 18:37I mean, I, I would think that if he was going to retire, Kenny,
- 18:41if the announcement probably would have already come.
- 18:43I, I would imagine it would have come before all of these
- 18:47departures and then the radio silence from the administration,
- 18:51from the staff. So I, I think all indications
- 18:53are he's planning on coming back.
- 18:55You know, Iowa State probably not in position, you know, with
- 18:59the Rev share era and, and paying the players and all that,
- 19:04Cyclone's probably not in position to buy Coach Finley out
- 19:08and and move on from him for a price tag of what I think it's
- 19:12about $700,000. With one year left, that's what
- 19:15his price tag is. Yeah, yeah.
- 19:17And then you and then you look at whoever you hire what what's
- 19:21the buy out there. So you may be looking at double
- 19:24that and and that's before you, you know, you go in and and hire
- 19:29a brand new staff. And yeah, I just think all
- 19:32indications are Kenny, it's going to be one more season to
- 19:34coach Finley. You know, Jimmy Rogers can do it
- 19:37with a bunch of one year mercenaries that a lot of this
- 19:40rosters made-up of. Why can't the women go out and
- 19:44and bring in what, 789 scholarship players for one
- 19:49year? You know, maybe they can get
- 19:50some that that grew up. Maybe Cyclone fans are in the
- 19:55state of Iowa. Maybe that would entertain
- 19:57staying through a coaching change.
- 19:59I think 11 positive is the Comito girl from from Carlisle.
- 20:05I think she grew up cyclone fan her entire life.
- 20:08She's going to be a big time player.
- 20:09I think you know, even with all the the roster questions right
- 20:13now, she's going to come in and be a day one starter for Iowa
- 20:16State. You look at the other 3 coming
- 20:19back. I think if Paul.
- 20:21She had some injuries down the stretch, she probably would be a
- 20:24starter. So they've got 4 starters if you
- 20:26look at it in those terms. And then you're filling it out
- 20:29with role players, one year type, mercenary type players to,
- 20:35you know, put this team together and, and, and see what happens.
- 20:38But I mean, you've got Audie Crooks that to build around.
- 20:40So probably not going to be awful really.
- 20:43And in the Big 12 terms, anyway. Well, if I if Audie stays,
- 20:47you're right. If not, then perhaps it's going
- 20:49to trend toward Steve Prom. Finally, I just Bill, you're in
- 20:53the recruiting world. I'm I'm certainly not, but I
- 20:57just those players that went to play for Rogers didn't know he
- 21:00was going to be 1 and done. Pollard's not right.
- 21:03Pollard's not extending Bill Finley.
- 21:06He's not going to extend Bill Finley.
- 21:07I don't know how you get kids. I don't know how you get kids.
- 21:11We'll see. I want to be.
- 21:12Surprised. You'd be surprised in the, in
- 21:15the transfer portal era, I'm, I'm not sure what the total
- 21:19amount of Iowa State's Rev share would be.
- 21:21I know an audience getting beyond like the NIL in addition
- 21:25to the Rev share amount with some of her endorsements.
- 21:28But I mean, you'd, you'd be surprised in, in this the
- 21:30current era of college basketball, with all the number
- 21:34of players in the portal right now, you'd be surprised them
- 21:37that would love to come play for Iowa State, even if it's for one
- 21:41season, get to play at the Big 12 level.
- 21:43And, and, you know, we'll, we'll see how it comes together.
- 21:47Well, when the music stops and there's a bunch of girls still
- 21:49standing looking for a home, maybe that's where you fill your
- 21:52eye. I don't know.
- 21:53I hope it works. I'll be surprised.
- 21:55Bill Seals, cyclonereport.com. Great stuff, Bill.
- 21:58Appreciate it as always. We'll read your stuff from
- 22:02Wednesday, the coordinator opportunity.
- 22:04We will speak with you next Monday.
- 22:06Bill Seals, cyclonereport.com. Thanks pal.
- 22:10Looking forward to it guys, have a good one.
- 22:11Yep, you do the same, Bill Seals as we check in on Iowa State.
- 22:15Yeah, they all got name tags of football, but it's a good thing
- 22:17they got that masking tape on the helmet with their name on.
- 22:20It Who's this guy, right? He's Oh my God, We'll see where
- 22:27it goes. Manchilovich.
- 22:29Is he an NBA player to you? Yeah, he's elite at one thing
- 22:33and we've seen that a lot. You know that guys that are
- 22:35elite and he absolutely is a absolutely is a shooter that you
- 22:39can find a home. AJ Green found one.
- 22:42Yes, Kyle Korver found one. Korver found one.
- 22:45Reggie Evans found one. Not as a shooter, rebounder.
- 22:47He was in the rebounder. Some of you, you look.
- 22:50At at 6 foot 8. At 6 foot 8 and you look at
- 22:53these stats and then whatever you get your stats from used to
- 22:55be in the newspaper, folks. I'll tell you about those.
- 22:58But there he is, right at the top of the list.
- 23:00Yes, If you're not first, he's second, right?
- 23:02Every single year, every single. Where is he now?
- 23:04He's in Iowa. No, he's in Florida.
- 23:06He was at the Florida Iowa game. Well, maybe that's what I'm.
- 23:09Thinking of yeah. And he's got a couple of kids
- 23:11that are good basketball players.
- 23:12Yeah, I think they play a little bit different than old dad did,
- 23:15but he was a guy. That's that's why I think
- 23:19Manchilovich has got a shot You do because you're elite at that.
- 23:22They'll find a way. And he definitely has.
- 23:25I mean, he can. Oh, he has a big time way, yes.
- 23:27He's got to get better off the bounce.
- 23:28And there's a lot of things that you can prove on, but then it
- 23:31becomes a full time job. They take that elite skill and
- 23:33figure out the rest. Absolutely.
- 23:35So you think he's done at Iowa State that?
- 23:37He's no, not you. Think he comes back and then
- 23:39maybe goes. Neither way.
- 23:40I don't have a strong inkling one way or the other, But is he
- 23:43an NBA player? Yes, because he can shoot the
- 23:46crap out of the ball. We'll take a time out.
- 23:48Wade looking. Bill joins us next Miller and
- 23:50Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network just past 130.
- 23:57Miller and Condon couple more segments to go including Trent's
- 24:01plays of the day circus sports sponsor those coming up here in
- 24:05about 15 minutes or they're about stop of the hour off the
- 24:08bench on Roberts and Lucas strain Wade looking Bill He too
- 24:11was in Houston watching Iowa and Illinois collide and Wade joins
- 24:16us to put a bow on the season. As always, Wade, thank you for
- 24:19what you do for Trent and I during the season.
- 24:21We're much appreciative to pick your brain and you're to you to
- 24:25share your knowledge with our audience.
- 24:27So just a phenomenal season for 32 minutes on Saturday.
- 24:32I'm guessing you kind of had the same feeling I did as a boy.
- 24:34Boy, there's a chance I was got another game coming up next
- 24:37weekend. But then just the final few
- 24:40minutes, it did not end well. But you know what a pretty fun
- 24:42season. Terrific ride from Mccollum's
- 24:45first year. It really was, you know, I think
- 24:48that they just had ups and downs and they lost at Minnesota but
- 24:53played Iowa State tough, lost at Penn State, beat Florida 36
- 24:58elite 8316 win, obviously just couldn't really ask for much
- 25:02more. Wonderful season.
- 25:04Definitely was. Let's go back first against
- 25:07Illinois and and what we saw Iowa comes out on fire just
- 25:11absolutely out 12 to two lead and and yes I already thoughts
- 25:14of Indianapolis starting to creep into minds.
- 25:16I know across the arena and people texting and making phone
- 25:20calls, but you saw the size, the size advantage that is there and
- 25:24I think definitely shows us going forward, you need that rim
- 25:26protector man Yao. I mean that guy battled as much
- 25:29as he could definitely throughout the course of this
- 25:31season, but he is not your traditional center.
- 25:34And and another question I kind of had going hand in hand with
- 25:36that, What does a traditional center look like in Ben
- 25:39Mccollum's scheme if they do find one of those guys in the
- 25:42portal? Yeah, You know, so just real
- 25:44quick with Illinois, you know, Bennis Sturtz was abusing Tyler
- 25:48Boswell. You know, it's just that that
- 25:50that kid, he looks overweight. It was the strangest thing.
- 25:54It looks like he's gained weight, but they take him out,
- 25:57brings brings to Yakovich. Then you got Waddler at the
- 26:02point at 6-6 pages, kids 6-7 and it goes up from there.
- 26:06And they just it was, they were just so big, you know.
- 26:11So to answer your question, the problem with finding of a rim
- 26:16protector, there's there's two things there's they're so
- 26:19limited. You know, I love Trevin Europe.
- 26:21I think he's going to be a great college player.
- 26:23He can do a lot of things, stretch defenses, pass the ball,
- 26:27handle it toughness, but he but he's not a he's not a rim
- 26:30protector. So, so so now you got to go find
- 26:33one. The best ones are going to go to
- 26:36Duke and UConn and Michigan and play one year and go to the NBA.
- 26:41So so then there's a handful of others that are on the market,
- 26:45so to speak. I was talking to some people in
- 26:47down and I was down in the in Houston that that that know
- 26:50things and it's 2 1/2 three million.
- 26:54You get a kid like that and again, there's not that many of
- 26:58them out there. So So what does he look like?
- 27:00You know, you saw the Akhtara kid play a couple years at Ohio.
- 27:04They transferred to Tennessee really pretty limited
- 27:08offensively, but catches lobs and protects the rim and that's
- 27:12what you need, whether it's in I major college level.
- 27:16You see that in the NBA with with Rudy Gobert made a $300
- 27:21million doing that, you know, because he's 72, athletic to
- 27:25protect the rent and block shots and catch lobs.
- 27:27But there's are there 25 kids like that in the country?
- 27:31There's not many. It's tough.
- 27:32It's going to be hard. Andrew McKeever is a name that I
- 27:35think a lot of people are going to get excited about.
- 27:37I'm not sure he'll ever see the set foot in the state of Iowa
- 27:40unless he's playing a game here with the Saint Mary's ties and
- 27:43Jefferson's ties. Maybe some connection there to
- 27:45Iowa State, but he's 72, averages eight points, 9
- 27:49rebounds as a sophomore. So that's $2.5 million right
- 27:52there. Wait, that's nuts.
- 27:54I don't know if that even gets you a call back from the kids
- 27:57ages. You know, it's it's like it is.
- 28:00I heard numbers about kids that are on the Iowa team that I just
- 28:04shook my head. But these these people know and
- 28:07it's it's not going down. You know, it's, it's, it's not
- 28:10going down. So that's a whole another
- 28:12conversation. But it was such a good year.
- 28:14I think you're right. It's it's it's rim protection
- 28:17and they just got to get more athletic.
- 28:19They're they're not bad, you know, take sage athlete, Isaiah
- 28:23Howard athlete. It's just that they need instead
- 28:27of take sage at 6-7, they need a couple guys that are 69 like
- 28:31that. And then going back to Saturday,
- 28:34the whole full Garrus thing was really interesting.
- 28:37The minutes that he got or didn't get it was it was it was
- 28:41a head scratcher for sure. No doubt you mentioned what we
- 28:45saw at a Tate Sage and a guy that we definitely saw the
- 28:47glimpses this year. I mean, I go back to the summer
- 28:49and Ken and I'd have somebody on that was over at practice and
- 28:52said Tate Sage, because his name continues to pop up like this
- 28:55guy. Well, this guy was an absolute
- 28:57stud this year and took it another step further during the
- 29:00tournament. Shoots 39% from behind the arc.
- 29:03We know the athleticism when he talked about upside and what he
- 29:06still can become, That's like one heck of a building block
- 29:09with Tate Sage. What you saw to him and what
- 29:11he's going to be going forward, Yeah.
- 29:13He, he could be a pro. I mean, I, I, I saw him, that
- 29:17was a Friday night and he's, he's every bit of 6-8.
- 29:20You know, sometimes you see those kids and they're like fix
- 29:22sticks and a quarter, but he's every bit of 6/8 his brother is
- 29:26in in the transfer portal. I think that's correct.
- 29:29Actually was talking or is talking with you and I I think
- 29:32so I think something like that would help if they could keep
- 29:36the twins in state. You know, as far as you know
- 29:40what, what the options Tate's going to have.
- 29:42But if or when, when he comes back to Iowa in the fall, he's
- 29:47going to be really good. He's got a chance.
- 29:49And you know, again, you're talking about him.
- 29:52Trey Thompson is a really good player.
- 29:54You watch him in warm ups and you're like, man, that kid has
- 29:57got a chance now. He's got a long ways to go.
- 29:59But you know, Cam Fulgaris comes back, you know, maybe Tavian
- 30:04Banks gets that year, you know, get a point guard, get the kid
- 30:09from Storm Lake. I mean, get some pieces.
- 30:11The kid from from Seattle or wherever he's from northwest
- 30:14part of the country, they've got some pieces.
- 30:17It's just, you know, now is the is the Wild West, whether it's
- 30:20Ben Jacobson leaving, whether it's guys that are in the
- 30:23portal. So you got to just almost start
- 30:25over. Yeah.
- 30:25Well, let me, let me get your take on Ben Jacobson leaving.
- 30:28Right time to do it, coach. Yeah.
- 30:31Great coach. You know, he, he turned the
- 30:32Minnesota job down 10 years ago when it was, I think it's great
- 30:36because I think Utah. So one of my dear friends play
- 30:39the Utah State. They've had three head coaches
- 30:42the last three years because they go there, They go 27 and
- 30:46five, yes. And then they go to Cincinnati
- 30:48or they go somewhere else. I think Ben's a great city. 55
- 30:52brings some stability. Got 8/10/12 more really good
- 30:56years now. The system he runs is not what
- 30:59Utah State's used to, but I think he provides some some some
- 31:03stability. Great coach.
- 31:05I, I think it's a great hire maybe for, for, for Ben,
- 31:08Obviously not for you and I, but there, there does come a time
- 31:10when you got to let, let people go and find the next one.
- 31:14You, I want to go back to Houston and seeing, seeing you
- 31:18was great, seeing you and Greg Bruner and all these former
- 31:22players and you guys up there. And I knew there was a big group
- 31:25of you former players that were sitting together, what that's
- 31:28like. And after we've talked about the
- 31:3027 years, the 39 years since the Elite 8, all these different
- 31:33things and this connection that you guys have all to the Iowa
- 31:37basketball team, just what it was like all getting together
- 31:39and seeing that squad 8 minutes away from a Final Four.
- 31:43Yeah, so it was it was a lot of ex players and I tell you even
- 31:47more so it was a lot of ex players that grew up in the
- 31:49state of Iowa. I think that was kind of even
- 31:52more looking back profound, especially for me now as I get
- 31:56older. I was there with my daughter
- 31:57who's a senior at Iowa and it just was a 48 hour adventure.
- 32:01And you were there, Trent, that that that whole scene felt like
- 32:04a like a like a tailgate. Before Iowa State football game
- 32:08was outdoors and BBQ, you know, drink weather was great and it
- 32:13just was people were excited and I think, you know, obviously
- 32:17they hoped the game would go a little better, but I think the
- 32:20excitement's there. It's just something where can
- 32:23they can they keep it up? Can they, you know, there's
- 32:25there's talk they're trying to raise 10s of millions of dollars
- 32:29for actual true Carver innovation.
- 32:32You know, it, it needs some refreshing.
- 32:35Can they can they get some players in?
- 32:37Can they keep players that they have?
- 32:38I think they can because, you know, again, everybody's going
- 32:42to get some type of money, you know, if you're a good player,
- 32:45but then do you want to win? And hey, here's a style that
- 32:50they one year ago they had no players on that roster. 0 Now
- 32:54they had the Drake guys and Cooper was probably going to
- 32:57come back, but they had zero kids on the roster.
- 32:59Just think what he can do with, you know, now a full a full
- 33:03year, 2 years, three years. I'm excited.
- 33:06People should be excited. And the brand building that he's
- 33:08done during this run, I mean, he did miss an opportunity to do a
- 33:11national TV or radio hit. And why wouldn't you?
- 33:15He gets it. He's selling his program.
- 33:17No doubt about do either. You know this because I, I heard
- 33:20it over Saturday as well. And Mccollum's brought it up
- 33:23that Bennett Sturtz took a pay cut to come to Iowa.
- 33:26Either of you have any idea how big of a pay cut that was?
- 33:29I mean, the top level guys were making three and a half $4
- 33:32million. Did he make a million?
- 33:34Yeah, yeah, He was about 1.5, the estimates, the rumblings
- 33:37that were out there. So yeah, he could have.
- 33:38Made. I think that's pretty pretty
- 33:39common. Probably double that.
- 33:41Isn't that something? Yeah, I don't.
- 33:42Think there's any question? Yeah.
- 33:44Who does he have any question where?
- 33:45How about 1520 years from now? How will Bennett Sturtz be
- 33:48remembered here? Wade.
- 33:50You know, it is, that's a good, it's really unique, you know,
- 33:53because he was in Iowa City for what, nine months?
- 33:56You know, I saw him, I saw him last April at this event in Des
- 33:59Moines and he was getting ready for finals at Drake.
- 34:02You forget that he still had to finish his course work at Drake
- 34:06late April, early May than before even got to I was city.
- 34:10You know, I think I think he and Ben will be tied together as
- 34:15one. I, I think that's one that when
- 34:17you mentioned Ben, you'll, you'll mention Bennett and vice
- 34:21versa, because you know what this team would have been
- 34:25without Bennett. Sturtz is a shell of what they
- 34:27were. You know, Ben's a great coach
- 34:30Now, don't get me wrong, but you got a top 20, top 25 first round
- 34:33pick running the show that knows your system.
- 34:36It was amazing. I think he will be will be loved
- 34:40and and revered and just again, it's just hopefully the the
- 34:46start of a great story to tell. Wade, I posed this a little bit
- 34:50earlier when we were talking with Scott Dockerman and just
- 34:53how this looks going forward. Bennett Sturtz is he's not a
- 34:55generational guy. He's always going to have good
- 34:57point guards. And you go back to Northwest
- 34:59Missouri State, that's what we heard.
- 35:00You might not recruit the best point guard, but every year he's
- 35:02going to build the best point guard.
- 35:03And that's what you're going to get out of Ben McCollum.
- 35:06But what do you look at the way that they kind of had to play
- 35:08this year and you look at it going forward, What do you what
- 35:11do you think the end game kind of looks like when Ben McCollum
- 35:13gets exactly once he what he wants roster wise?
- 35:16How is this basketball team going to play?
- 35:21I think it'll be similar. I think it'll be, you know, that
- 35:23slow down, grind it out because because they're never going to
- 35:27have Michigan athletes, you know, they're never going to
- 35:29have probably even Illinois athletes.
- 35:30But if you can find a taste stage, even every other year,
- 35:36keep him around, develop him, sprinkle in some transfers they
- 35:39got, you know, maybe get a foreign connection with with
- 35:43with vulgaris, keep that going. I think they really have a
- 35:46chance to to build something here.
- 35:50You know, it's but it's it's just going to come down to to
- 35:53resources, whatever that means, whether it's money or facilities
- 35:56or pay for the coaches. That's that's one thing.
- 35:59But if you can get talent and it doesn't have to be, you know,
- 36:04Michigan type of transfer talent, if it can just be fairly
- 36:08competitive and then you win that game Saturday and you get
- 36:13you get UConn next Saturday. You know, UConn got they have
- 36:18holes, they have war. You know they couldn't they
- 36:20can't shoot great. So you never know.
- 36:22You never know. It's not a seven game.
- 36:25I think you and I talked Saturday was not a seven NBA or
- 36:29seven game NBA series, right, where the best team is going to
- 36:32win because you got to beat them four times.
- 36:34They just had to beat him that one time and that was Saturday
- 36:36and they were close, like Ken said, 32 minutes and they had
- 36:39them. Wade looking Bill Wade, thanks
- 36:41for doing this all season, man. Truly appreciate your wisdom and
- 36:44your insight into a Hawkeye basketball over the years.
- 36:47Wade, Thanks pal. Nice time you guys.
- 36:50Thank you so much. Good to talk to you Wade looking
- 36:52Bill, as we take a look back on the year, do you know what the
- 36:55average the Iowa men did season ticket wise this year or there
- 36:59what average attended? I think it was up 2000 from the
- 37:01year. Previous 2000 tickets did they
- 37:04did that top 11,010 thousand? I just remember hearing that
- 37:07number. What do you think it goes up
- 37:09next year? Can you get another 1500 on top
- 37:12of that? I think that might be low.
- 37:14Average 13,000 including everything, the non conference
- 37:17buy games and everything. Is that a realistic goal?
- 37:20And how many sellouts were there this year, do you remember?
- 37:23There was a couple I think weren't there.
- 37:24Weren't there a couple Big 10 games late in the year?
- 37:27Didn't they sell out? There were?
- 37:28I thought one did for sure the Purdue.
- 37:30Game did, right. That was on a Saturday.
- 37:33The Nebraska game did not. I do remember that it was close,
- 37:36but it didn't. So maybe one, possibly two.
- 37:39Well. That's going to change, one has
- 37:41to assume, and I'm not saying it's going to change in
- 37:42November. Well, and, and just, and this is
- 37:45anecdotal, but the amount of people that I have heard from
- 37:48here over these last couple of weeks and I checked out an Iowa
- 37:52basketball, like maybe you would watch a big game every once in a
- 37:55while. And just how how locked back in
- 37:57they are and the frustrations and the drought and everything
- 38:00else they came along with it. Those people are back and you
- 38:04reinvigorate when you moved here.
- 38:06That was it, was it. Iowa basketball was a huge
- 38:10thing, yes, and it's a chance to get back to it now because he
- 38:13had the right coach, a guy that gets it, you know, and a guy
- 38:16that, boy, he knows how to coach doesn't.
- 38:18It good God, I love the fact he was asked.
- 38:22I think Sunday morning, you know, what'd you do last night
- 38:25or what are you going to do to maybe it was Saturday before he
- 38:28before his media or veils rather dried up.
- 38:32I'll probably I won't sleep. I'm going to go back to the
- 38:33room. I'll, I'll plug in the tape and
- 38:35I'll and I'll watch to see where I screwed up, where I screwed
- 38:40up. He's a brilliant coach.
- 38:43Miller and Condon, our final segment trends, plays of the
- 38:45day. Next it's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 38:47Network final couple of minutes. Welcome back.
- 38:49It's Miller and Condon. Des Moines sports station one O
- 38:526.3 KX&O, the Iowa Sports Radio Network's flagship 2O clock off
- 38:57the bench. Lucas and Sean tomorrow morning.
- 39:00Heather and Alec get going right off the bat here at 6:00 AM TC
- 39:06Plays of the Day. Circus Sports sponsored them
- 39:08tonight. A lot of full.
- 39:09Is there a full card of baseball?
- 39:11Seems like it is, yeah. I don't know if anybody's off,
- 39:13but yeah, it's a big card coming up this evening.
- 39:16We got 3 plays there. We got 2 plays in the Elite 8 on
- 39:19the women's side of things. Let's kick it off with baseball
- 39:21and don't bet against the streak.
- 39:23Well, the Marlins have won three in a row.
- 39:24By the way, do you see how they're doing it or who they're
- 39:26doing it with? No starring for the Marlins.
- 39:29Who's that game-winning hit? I think the last two games.
- 39:32Owen Casey. Owen K.
- 39:34Wow, look at that a while from now.
- 39:36The guy going tonight, the Casey trade as we'll get to see
- 39:40Cabrera. We're.
- 39:42Going to play the Bartlett's laying -130 in that one, get
- 39:45away -127 as well with the Reds tonight against the Pirates.
- 39:50Have the edge on Burns in that pitching match up there, so get
- 39:53a jump aboard there. And finally, I really like Nick
- 39:55Martinez for the Rays and they're getting plus 140 tonight
- 39:58on the road at Milwaukee. Need a loss for those Brew Crew,
- 40:01right? Let's not let them race out in
- 40:04front here with the Cubs off to a bit of a slow start.
- 40:06So we're going to grab plus 140 there with the Rays pick #3 in
- 40:10baseball. Then just going to play both the
- 40:11favorites. In the women's side of things,
- 40:14though, both underdogs pushed yesterday against UConn and
- 40:17against UCLA. What?
- 40:18Was the number in the UConn game Any idea?
- 40:21I got an 11 1/2. There were 12 and a halfs also
- 40:23in the market. It was right on the number and
- 40:25it came down and they stretched it out there at the end, those
- 40:28final. 3 UConn struggle in the game.
- 40:30I'm talking about UCLA, sorry. Against Notre Dame that was like
- 40:3428 1/2. It was that big, yeah.
- 40:36And love Notre Dame in that spot.
- 40:38Notre Dame was playing well, but still, I mean, the gap is just
- 40:41significant. South Carolina's laying 14 1/2
- 40:44tonight against TCU. Texas laying 9 1/2 against
- 40:47Michigan I think. Both favorites cover.
- 40:49My mind's just tainted with the Iowa Michigan games too.
- 40:52Like Michigan was one of the few teams that actually pushed UCLA
- 40:55and pushed UConn this year, but those two games against the
- 40:57Hawkeyes just still linger in my mind.
- 40:59Maybe too much, but I'll grab the Longhorns minus the 9 1/2.
- 41:02So 5 plays, three in baseball, 2IN women's hoops.
- 41:05I know we're four days away from you.
- 41:07Making your picks on Friday before the final.
- 41:10Yeah, it's the the Arizona, Michigan game.
- 41:13Is it as much of A coin flip as the country?
- 41:15Believes it is. Oh, absolutely.
- 41:17You think it is? Yeah.
- 41:18I can't get. Past Michigan, they're just so
- 41:21dominant. They've got that proverbial
- 41:24extra gear. I say that watching Arizona go
- 41:27into their extra gear in the second-half against Purdue.
- 41:29Well, Michigan struggled with Howard.
- 41:32They did. They did.
- 41:33Didn't Arizona struggle in one of the?
- 41:35Games. You were very much a creature of
- 41:36the moment. The last time you see a team,
- 41:39yes, really dictates the way that you feel.
- 41:41Yes, they had struggled. The first two rounds didn't.
- 41:45Not Duke struggles. Right, not at that level, but.
- 41:48And then Duke comes out yesterday, just says whooping
- 41:50them. Because I think they had five
- 41:52out of 6 where they didn't cover Michigan before what they did.
- 41:54And obviously he gets Tennessee took it to another level.
- 41:57So no, I do, I think it's going to be a coin flip.
- 42:01That coin flip for me, not going to land exactly in the middle.
- 42:04It's going to land on Michigan. I don't know what I'm going to
- 42:07do UConn, Illinois, though. Well, we've got some time to
- 42:10figure that out before we get there.
- 42:12Absolutely good stuff. All right, yeah, it's baseball
- 42:14for me tonight as well. Settle in, watch a little
- 42:17baseball and see how that goes. All right, that's going to do it
- 42:21for us. We appreciate you being here.
- 42:23Coming up next is off the bench on the Iowa Sports Radio
- 42:26Network. Overtime Iowa still to come.
- 42:28That's five until 6. Miller Condon talks sports with
- 42:31you every Monday through Friday from noon until two.
- 42:34We sure appreciate you tuning in here on Des Moines Sports
- 42:37station One O 6.3 KXO in the With Sports Radio Network.
