- 0:13Speaker 1: Hi, Welcome to inside the Mom's Club, where being a
- 0:16Speaker 1: mom is the coolest place to be. Here in the
- 0:19Speaker 1: Mom's Club, we believe that what embarrasses you now will
- 0:23Speaker 1: make a great story later. And let's face it, you
- 0:26Speaker 1: don't laugh sometimes you're gonna cry. Join us in having
- 0:30Speaker 1: a good laugh together. I'm Monica Samuels. You are now
- 0:35Speaker 1: inside the Mom's Club, your private destination for all things mom.
- 0:43Speaker 1: Welcome Mom's Welcome to inside the Mom's Club. I'm your host,
- 0:46Speaker 1: Monica Samuels, and I am thrilled to have with me
- 0:50Speaker 1: today my co host, Julie Orchid. Welcome back, Julie.
- 0:56Speaker 2: I'm bringing from here to hear.
- 0:57Speaker 1: I am so thrilled to have Julie back. Now we
- 1:02Speaker 1: had last time I was here, we had a couple
- 1:04Speaker 1: of substitute hosts co host and well one of them
- 1:08Speaker 1: my sisters. I think she wanted to be.
- 1:09Speaker 3: The host, but that's a whole other story.
- 1:12Speaker 1: But they filled in beautifully. Her daughter Georgia was another one.
- 1:16Speaker 2: Yea special thank you for having her.
- 1:18Speaker 1: Have you back? Can you share with our audience why
- 1:21Speaker 1: you were here?
- 1:24Speaker 2: Well, I took a little break.
- 1:26Speaker 4: I've got one of those fancy stories that I got
- 1:28Speaker 4: diagnosed with breast cancer, and I am so beyond thrilled
- 1:33Speaker 4: and feel a ton of gratitude to be back today
- 1:36Speaker 4: and back on track and super scary, but I was
- 1:41Speaker 4: able to come back, and you know, be stronger and
- 1:46Speaker 4: better before, and don't skip your mamacrams.
- 1:49Speaker 2: That would be my first advice to everybody.
- 1:51Speaker 4: So I'm doing very well and I'm truly over the
- 1:55Speaker 4: moon to be here today.
- 1:56Speaker 1: So well, we're over the moon that you are here.
- 1:59Speaker 2: Yeah, you're very excited, and it's hard to get rid
- 2:02Speaker 2: of me.
- 2:03Speaker 1: It's so hard. Happened, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, well yeah,
- 2:06Speaker 1: I guess you're here permanently.
- 2:08Speaker 3: There, I guess.
- 2:08Speaker 2: I hope, so, I hope so yeah.
- 2:11Speaker 1: So you and as far as I mean breast cancer,
- 2:14Speaker 1: people get all different concepts. But my aunt was diagnosed
- 2:17Speaker 1: with breast cancer many years ago. She she had the surgery,
- 2:22Speaker 1: she had the five years of the drug to moxifin,
- 2:26Speaker 1: and she's eighty seven now, and you know, that's sort
- 2:29Speaker 1: of a memory of hers, that she had breast cancer.
- 2:31Speaker 1: So these days that's not like in the old days.
- 2:36Speaker 1: I guess people took it.
- 2:37Speaker 2: As yeah, yeah, this is over, you're done. Whatever.
- 2:41Speaker 4: I think the most part for getting a diagnosis of
- 2:43Speaker 4: that is that we've come so far and you can
- 2:46Speaker 4: really have You have your before cancer and then you
- 2:49Speaker 4: have after cancer, and so what happens in between is
- 2:53Speaker 4: really something that you know can you can fare well
- 2:57Speaker 4: from this type of thing. So but for the most part,
- 3:00Speaker 4: I just really like seeing that diagnosis on a piece
- 3:02Speaker 4: of paper. You think it's someone else, you don't think
- 3:05Speaker 4: it's you, and you have to really process that and
- 3:08Speaker 4: go through you know what life is going to look like. So, yes,
- 3:13Speaker 4: your aunt eighty seven, and I'm not going to give
- 3:16Speaker 4: my age, but.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Not eighty seven if.
- 3:20Speaker 1: You aspired to eighty seven decades.
- 3:22Speaker 4: From you anyway, I think for the most part this
- 3:24Speaker 4: is inside the mom's club.
- 3:26Speaker 2: And for the most.
- 3:27Speaker 4: Part, for me, I always knew that I could handle
- 3:30Speaker 4: anything that came my way. But I have children and
- 3:33Speaker 4: two daughters, and I'm gonna try not try because my
- 3:35Speaker 4: daughter's here today. But for the most part, I would
- 3:38Speaker 4: never want to leave them, and that would be that's
- 3:43Speaker 4: the hard part. So that was the hard part for me.
- 3:45Speaker 4: But I'm a fighter and I'm here. I'm ready to roll.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Well, good, we're ready. We're ready to roll with you
- 3:52Speaker 1: for sure.
- 3:52Speaker 2: So thanks for asking. I appreciate it.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Well, I'm just happy. I'm thrilled your back. Yeah, and
- 3:59Speaker 1: I think you're story is important.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Yeah, there's a lot to it.
- 4:02Speaker 4: There's a lot to it without going into all the
- 4:04Speaker 4: details of it, but it's definitely show worthy and talking
- 4:07Speaker 4: about because actually, I'm one of eight women, and so
- 4:10Speaker 4: if I have a platform or something to say about it,
- 4:13Speaker 4: it's definitely something that needs to be known. And it's common.
- 4:17Speaker 4: It's common, it's common and so and it's super scary.
- 4:20Speaker 4: But yeah, so thanks for.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Letting me talk about it.
- 4:23Speaker 1: And something you just said reminded so years ago they
- 4:26Speaker 1: thought I might have a varying cancer, right, Fortunately I
- 4:29Speaker 1: did not, thank God. But but you're right when they
- 4:31Speaker 1: first tell you that, yeah, you've kind of body and
- 4:35Speaker 1: your life happening to me.
- 4:37Speaker 4: And you hear nothing once they tell you or they
- 4:39Speaker 4: say something to you.
- 4:40Speaker 2: And even though these physicians.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Say it to people every day, once they say it
- 4:44Speaker 4: to you, you're like, I can't hear anything that you're
- 4:47Speaker 4: saying because all the wave, if you know, whether you're
- 4:51Speaker 4: a mom or not, or you have things going on
- 4:53Speaker 4: in your life, it just comes over you like, how
- 4:55Speaker 4: am I how am.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I going to manage this?
- 4:56Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 4:57Speaker 4: So anyway, I'm incredibly blessed have friends and family that
- 5:01Speaker 4: is above and beyond, and I would wish that what
- 5:04Speaker 4: I have going on in my life to anybody, you know,
- 5:07Speaker 4: and especially my daughter who came home and took you know,
- 5:12Speaker 4: without it, didn't skip a beat about Yeah, I'm going
- 5:15Speaker 4: to be there and no matter what not, I have
- 5:18Speaker 4: a life. I can't do it, just not even didn't
- 5:20Speaker 4: even skip a beat. And we're tight people.
- 5:23Speaker 1: We're tight and the good and all your friends, because
- 5:26Speaker 1: that's what the Mom's Club is all about. Are we
- 5:28Speaker 1: are good friends that we're there for you? Yeah, you are, And.
- 5:31Speaker 4: Yes I'm the friend you want to have. I will
- 5:35Speaker 4: drive you to the er and I'll take you to
- 5:38Speaker 4: the airport.
- 5:38Speaker 2: What more, what more would you want?
- 5:41Speaker 1: And she drives me around Los Angeles with I have
- 5:44Speaker 1: my eyes closed and awful, you guys, I'm the worst
- 5:48Speaker 1: passenger in a stressful situation, like truly, Yeah, I know,
- 5:53Speaker 1: we've got to get over those four lanes and she's like,
- 5:56Speaker 1: I got it, and so then I closed my eyes,
- 5:58Speaker 1: embraced myself and we so we're here now. Nothing nothing
- 6:02Speaker 1: bad exactly, Well, you had a difficult January and February.
- 6:08Speaker 2: But I'm not the only one.
- 6:09Speaker 1: You are not the only one, and so today we're
- 6:12Speaker 1: going to share a different story. Our guest today has
- 6:15Speaker 1: been with us before. The Last time she was here,
- 6:17Speaker 1: she was here with her mom talking about their amazing
- 6:21Speaker 1: or as we say in the Mom's called amazing careers.
- 6:24Speaker 1: She is a rising recording artist, singer, and violinist who
- 6:28Speaker 1: has made a significant impact on the music scene. By
- 6:31Speaker 1: the time she was eighteen, she'd already performed at Lincoln
- 6:34Speaker 1: Center and had a song on a Grammy Awarding Award
- 6:37Speaker 1: winning album. She is truly amazing, and she is here
- 6:40Speaker 1: to share her story with us about her family's experience
- 6:45Speaker 1: with the Palisades fire. Sadly they lost their home and
- 6:49Speaker 1: we'll hear more about it. Please welcome is sold a
- 6:52Speaker 1: fair back to the Mom's Club.
- 6:54Speaker 5: Hello are you guys?
- 6:56Speaker 1: Thank you for having me?
- 6:58Speaker 6: Are good?
- 6:59Speaker 1: So so Julius told her story. She had a little difficult,
- 7:02Speaker 1: A little difficult. She had a difficult but you're you
- 7:07Speaker 1: know you can relate.
- 7:10Speaker 5: Sorry, very okay, I'm so sorry with what you had
- 7:15Speaker 5: to go through. You know, it's but the fact that
- 7:17Speaker 5: you're a survivor, and the fact that you're fighting is
- 7:20Speaker 5: something that I feel like I can relate to, and
- 7:23Speaker 5: it's amazing that you're still fighting, because truly, I feel like,
- 7:28Speaker 5: as women and as people, we are at a point
- 7:31Speaker 5: in our life when we're when we're figuring out and
- 7:33Speaker 5: learning how to be braver and to be able to
- 7:38Speaker 5: be more of ourselves than like be okay with that
- 7:41Speaker 5: and be able to I think, what's the word, like
- 7:46Speaker 5: be able to like fend for ourselves and be able
- 7:51Speaker 5: to be there and be strong and not to back down.
- 7:55Speaker 1: You know, well, you both are a good example of that.
- 7:59Speaker 1: So let's let's start.
- 8:01Speaker 3: Well, you're it's it takes a little time.
- 8:03Speaker 1: Let's easy for me to say on the one the
- 8:07Speaker 1: middle that doesn't have a story to tell, Oh, that's
- 8:10Speaker 1: not true.
- 8:10Speaker 3: That's True's so not true.
- 8:12Speaker 5: I mean, you're here, I forget us. That's true.
- 8:14Speaker 3: That's true.
- 8:15Speaker 1: So take us back before we talk about the other
- 8:19Speaker 1: side of it. Take us back to that day. So
- 8:21Speaker 1: what exactly was your experience?
- 8:24Speaker 5: Oh, good lord, I was sick with the flu. I
- 8:27Speaker 5: was sick with the flu. I think until or I
- 8:31Speaker 5: got the flu. I think it was a couple of
- 8:33Speaker 5: days beforehand, you know, it was just kind of going
- 8:36Speaker 5: around at the time. Yeah, you know, you don't really know,
- 8:39Speaker 5: you know, what to expect. That it comes every year,
- 8:41Speaker 5: it comes every winter, and I'm the type of person
- 8:45Speaker 5: that only gets sick probably around like once or twice
- 8:47Speaker 5: a year. And for all the moms out there, my
- 8:51Speaker 5: mom got me hooked on cod liver oil from Air One.
- 8:56Speaker 5: I will say, since I was three years old, I
- 8:58Speaker 5: have been taking it NonStop. I only get sick like
- 9:01Speaker 5: once or twice a year, so it's very good for
- 9:05Speaker 5: your body and your immune system. And I was kind of,
- 9:09Speaker 5: i would say, like loosening myself up, and I wasn't
- 9:11Speaker 5: really taking the cod liver as I should be. You know.
- 9:15Speaker 5: I was rushing everywhere doing jobs, doing things that I'm like, oh,
- 9:19Speaker 5: work is so important, you know, and I really wanted
- 9:23Speaker 5: to maintain more of my health. But I just kind
- 9:25Speaker 5: of had like a little downfall and I was like, okay,
- 9:27Speaker 5: I had the flu. The worst that could happen is
- 9:30Speaker 5: that I just like sit in my room all day
- 9:32Speaker 5: and either record songs or sleep. You know. I was
- 9:37Speaker 5: getting some rest and it was a beautiful morning. Yeah,
- 9:40Speaker 5: just start the days started off so beautiful and I
- 9:44Speaker 5: love I mean, this is like a biased opinion, but
- 9:48Speaker 5: I love the Santa Ana Wins. I always have never
- 9:50Speaker 5: had a problem with them. I just thought they were
- 9:52Speaker 5: so beautiful, even though they can be a complete destriction
- 9:56Speaker 5: as we all know.
- 9:57Speaker 4: Now, you know, see them being calming and something, yeah,
- 10:00Speaker 4: is bringing, you know, something more spiritual.
- 10:02Speaker 5: Than absolutely and it's there's something about the one that's
- 10:06Speaker 5: so beautiful, and so I think, like it blusters and
- 10:11Speaker 5: it's just a nice breeze and your hair and and
- 10:14Speaker 5: you know, a nice feeling on your body and you know,
- 10:16Speaker 5: with the sun, and it's just especially in California. I mean,
- 10:19Speaker 5: that's why we all live here, right, you know, that's
- 10:21Speaker 5: why so many people live here. As they come for
- 10:23Speaker 5: the ocean, they come for the beach, they come for
- 10:25Speaker 5: the sunny days, because it's practically spring every season of
- 10:28Speaker 5: the year. So the morning just started off so beautiful,
- 10:33Speaker 5: and I was at a moment where I was just like,
- 10:35Speaker 5: I was still really sick, but again I was like,
- 10:38Speaker 5: I'm just gonna, like, you know, put put up the
- 10:41Speaker 5: blinds and I'm just gonna enjoy the weather and love
- 10:44Speaker 5: living in the Palisades, you know, because I did love
- 10:47Speaker 5: living in that area. So I was staying at my
- 10:51Speaker 5: parents' house and my mom comes in and she's like, oh,
- 10:55Speaker 5: there's a fire in the Highlands, and okay, so on
- 10:59Speaker 5: Jane way. First, there was a bunch of different parties happening,
- 11:03Speaker 5: you know, for New Year's and so my cousin and
- 11:07Speaker 5: I got back home around like maybe four am, and
- 11:10Speaker 5: so it was a party for sure.
- 11:15Speaker 3: I went to a couple of them.
- 11:17Speaker 5: And he was staying over at my place because he
- 11:19Speaker 5: lived super far, you know, in a different area, and
- 11:22Speaker 5: so he's kind of like my older brother, except I
- 11:25Speaker 5: bost him around like a little sister and I'm like,
- 11:28Speaker 5: go sit over there, like that's where you're sleeping. You're
- 11:30Speaker 5: sleeping on the couch. And he's like, can I have
- 11:31Speaker 5: a pillow? And I'm like I'll throw it from the
- 11:33Speaker 5: other room, you know. And I was like, I'm tired.
- 11:36Speaker 5: I don't want to wake anybody up. And that morning,
- 11:40Speaker 5: like we had a really nice morning and I'm you know,
- 11:43Speaker 5: I told my mom, I was like, I'm sorry if
- 11:44Speaker 5: we like woke you up or anything, and she's like, no,
- 11:47Speaker 5: you didn't. Actually I was already awake.
- 11:49Speaker 7: You know.
- 11:50Speaker 5: There was a fire in the Highlands on January first,
- 11:52Speaker 5: early that morning, around like four am. And that morning,
- 11:55Speaker 5: when I was with my cousin before we went into
- 11:57Speaker 5: the house, we saw all these helicopters kind of surrounding
- 12:00Speaker 5: the violence area and we're like, okay, like the firefighters
- 12:03Speaker 5: are going to take it out. It's gonna be fine.
- 12:05Speaker 5: And they did like they always do, and like, I'm
- 12:08Speaker 5: so grateful for them, but with this fire, yeah, there,
- 12:14Speaker 5: that's not first.
- 12:17Speaker 1: And they thought later that there were people shooting off
- 12:20Speaker 1: fireworks for the New Year, Is that right?
- 12:22Speaker 5: Yeah, So there was kids that were shooting off fireworks,
- 12:25Speaker 5: and I think that the fire did not get completely maintained,
- 12:31Speaker 5: and so there was embers that were lying around. And
- 12:34Speaker 5: so when the wind picked up on this seventh or
- 12:38Speaker 5: it was like the sixth or the seventh, that part
- 12:42Speaker 5: of the Highlands started.
- 12:43Speaker 1: To reignited the fire and the sant Ana winds like
- 12:46Speaker 1: drove it over towards the palisades. So how long between
- 12:49Speaker 1: the time your mom said that and then did she
- 12:53Speaker 1: say we need to evacuate or when you're here, you're sick.
- 12:56Speaker 5: So so we had gone through a couple of evacuations before,
- 13:00Speaker 5: and this was not the first you know, and the
- 13:04Speaker 5: Highlens has always had some sort of fire every now
- 13:07Speaker 5: and then, whether it was like an artisan meaning like
- 13:09Speaker 5: somebody who was like igniting a fire because they wanted
- 13:12Speaker 5: to or for some stupid reason, or you know, maybe
- 13:17Speaker 5: like a spark happens between a power line and a brush,
- 13:20Speaker 5: or who knows. You know, there's so many things that
- 13:22Speaker 5: could happen.
- 13:23Speaker 4: For someone's from California. If you have a go bag,
- 13:25Speaker 4: do you have like how does this work?
- 13:27Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 13:27Speaker 2: What happened?
- 13:28Speaker 1: So setting this scene? So you're sick, you don't feel well,
- 13:32Speaker 1: and what did you take? Like how did you decide?
- 13:34Speaker 5: What?
- 13:34Speaker 1: God?
- 13:36Speaker 5: So typically, on every evacuation that I you know, was
- 13:40Speaker 5: a part of then the times that I've lived in
- 13:44Speaker 5: the Palisades, I always took my most expensive clothing.
- 13:49Speaker 2: It's hurt, it's art.
- 13:51Speaker 5: It's art my mom. It is a muss my mom made.
- 13:55Speaker 5: She she had this Versace jumpsuit. Oh, it was so
- 13:58Speaker 5: beautiful and it was from the nineties, and so as
- 14:01Speaker 5: a kid, she always just like she's like it was
- 14:03Speaker 5: one thousand dollars back then, and I bet it's going
- 14:05Speaker 5: to be like more now. And and it was something
- 14:08Speaker 5: that also like the piece itself is literal art. It
- 14:11Speaker 5: had like Mozart on It had all these different composers,
- 14:14Speaker 5: and it had like music notes and like violins, and
- 14:19Speaker 5: I loved it. I would be very it was very cool.
- 14:21Speaker 5: And I was like, oh, I took it. I took it.
- 14:25Speaker 5: That was one of the first things. So I took
- 14:28Speaker 5: it because it just meant so much to me. Yeah,
- 14:31Speaker 5: you know, And I was super sick and I didn't
- 14:33Speaker 5: have like any fluids or any food in my body.
- 14:36Speaker 5: So I was just like so out of it, and
- 14:38Speaker 5: my mind was just like what am I doing? So
- 14:41Speaker 5: I went through my closet and I was like, what's replaceable.
- 14:44Speaker 5: I was like, that's replaceable. That's replaceable. Oh, that could
- 14:48Speaker 5: be replaced. Oh I don't think I'll need that. You know.
- 14:51Speaker 5: There's a bunch of things.
- 14:53Speaker 2: That their animals involved.
- 14:54Speaker 5: Oh yes, my dog Dmitri Shostakovich.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Okay, I'm sorry, can you say this one more?
- 14:59Speaker 5: Test you Always in my family, it's a tradition to
- 15:03Speaker 5: name a dog after a classical composer of no why not?
- 15:11Speaker 7: You know?
- 15:12Speaker 5: So his name is Dimitri Shostakovich. I call him Shosty
- 15:15Speaker 5: for shorts or d me. It's a little you know,
- 15:18Speaker 5: cute name. He We definitely took him, of course, you know,
- 15:23Speaker 5: so obviously your pet.
- 15:25Speaker 1: Or whole different story.
- 15:28Speaker 5: Don't don't leave your animals.
- 15:29Speaker 1: You guys told you you took your birth certificate, which
- 15:33Speaker 1: you learned, or you took some documents you didn't need
- 15:35Speaker 1: to take right because you could have gotten them later.
- 15:39Speaker 5: I took actually I did not take any documentary, oh okay,
- 15:43Speaker 5: which was actually totally fine because the government said it's
- 15:46Speaker 5: all free, and I was like, great, thanks, yeah, like
- 15:50Speaker 5: let's go government, you know. But I took my grammys.
- 15:56Speaker 5: I thank god, thank god.
- 15:58Speaker 1: Did your mom she had great too, so she didn't
- 16:01Speaker 1: take her grands she did not.
- 16:02Speaker 5: I don't know whyt Oh, they're replaceable for sure, and
- 16:07Speaker 5: I think a majority of the things that are in
- 16:10Speaker 5: somebody's house are so replaceable. Besides, i'd say grandma's jewelry,
- 16:16Speaker 5: which these are these rings right here, which like they
- 16:22Speaker 5: are my grandma's and they were all in the safety
- 16:25Speaker 5: deposit box that burned in the fire. But it burned around,
- 16:28Speaker 5: it burned around, So think the Lord that our safe
- 16:34Speaker 5: box was good. But you know, I think the thing
- 16:37Speaker 5: was was that like still, I mean, you know, I
- 16:41Speaker 5: this was one of the only pieces. Everything else on
- 16:43Speaker 5: my body right now is donated, sure, you know, but
- 16:47Speaker 5: this cross was something that I took. My mom gave
- 16:51Speaker 5: me a Tiffany necklace for graduation, so I took that
- 16:55Speaker 5: because it just was meaningful to sentimental, you know.
- 16:57Speaker 4: So you have all these possessions, and I think that
- 17:01Speaker 4: you know, you think about possessions for what they are, right,
- 17:03Speaker 4: not the most important thing. So you're Monica and I
- 17:07Speaker 4: have kids in our twenties, and you know, we what
- 17:11Speaker 4: is it like for you as a young person?
- 17:13Speaker 2: What does this teach you? How do you start over?
- 17:16Speaker 2: What is the lesson in it?
- 17:18Speaker 5: Well? I think for me because I was born and
- 17:22Speaker 5: raised in that same house that I grew up in
- 17:25Speaker 5: in the Palisades, for me, it's more of a new start,
- 17:29Speaker 5: So it seems more I think positive because I think
- 17:33Speaker 5: there's so much positivity and even in such a destructive
- 17:37Speaker 5: and chaotic time, you know, I think you learn from
- 17:40Speaker 5: the lessons of being a young kid. And in a way,
- 17:45Speaker 5: the fire is like a sense of relief. It's like
- 17:49Speaker 5: it kind of washes everything off of you and like
- 17:52Speaker 5: you become a new person. It's like the phoenix literally
- 17:56Speaker 5: rising from the action. Sorry Ashes, Yeah, no pun intended.
- 18:01Speaker 1: So do you your parents, how did they view it,
- 18:04Speaker 1: because they're older and those were decades of their possessions,
- 18:08Speaker 1: and how did they feel about.
- 18:09Speaker 5: I think in that situation, it's a little different because
- 18:13Speaker 5: for me, it's something where it's more like more of
- 18:17Speaker 5: an adventure and more of something where I'm like, oh, okay,
- 18:20Speaker 5: I'm going to be okay being able to grow up now,
- 18:23Speaker 5: Like I yes, I hope that my childhood home was restored.
- 18:27Speaker 5: I'm not going to live there again, though, you know,
- 18:29Speaker 5: I'll visit my parents if they move back there. But
- 18:32Speaker 5: you know, I'm now an adult. I'm twenty one years old.
- 18:35Speaker 5: You know, I'm starting to figure out my living situation
- 18:38Speaker 5: and live on my own.
- 18:39Speaker 7: You know.
- 18:40Speaker 5: With my parents, it's a place where they literally got
- 18:44Speaker 5: that house from nothing, you know, like they grew up.
- 18:48Speaker 5: They grew up in two different types of households. You know.
- 18:52Speaker 5: My dad grew up with like two brothers and he
- 18:54Speaker 5: was the oldest, and he lived in Seattle and he
- 18:57Speaker 5: came down to be in the music industry. And my
- 19:02Speaker 5: mom her mother and dad or father. Her mom was
- 19:07Speaker 5: a actress at one point and then decided to become
- 19:10Speaker 5: a holistic healer and chiropractor and doctor. And then my
- 19:15Speaker 5: grandpa on my mom's side, he was an alternative. He
- 19:19Speaker 5: was like an alternative blah, oh my god, the an
- 19:23Speaker 5: alternative energy. And he was also in like finance, you know.
- 19:29Speaker 5: And so he grew up. He grew up from nothing
- 19:31Speaker 5: to He was an immigrant from Italy and so his
- 19:34Speaker 5: parents his mom died young. His father was very abusive,
- 19:38Speaker 5: and so he grew up with a sister who actually
- 19:42Speaker 5: worked at Hannah Barbera as like a cell drawer, the Flintstones,
- 19:47Speaker 5: and she's so cool, like the most Italian woman you'll
- 19:51Speaker 5: ever meet. And he decided to move to Baja California
- 19:57Speaker 5: and really start to start his life again because in
- 19:59Speaker 5: the nineteen oh six earthquake, he was like one years old,
- 20:02Speaker 5: but his parents lost everything in San Francisco and so
- 20:06Speaker 5: there was a.
- 20:07Speaker 1: There's so they had some knowledge of what it's like
- 20:10Speaker 1: to lose things like that at their age. So where
- 20:14Speaker 1: we have zoomer moms who have lots.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Of questions, but amazing before we.
- 20:18Speaker 1: Get to them really quick, you told me too that
- 20:21Speaker 1: you learned a lot like there are resources like you
- 20:24Speaker 1: can mention your clothes you're wearing our donated so you
- 20:29Speaker 1: learned you had nothing, had nothing, and how do you
- 20:33Speaker 1: go about accessing those resources?
- 20:35Speaker 3: Are their own groups that.
- 20:36Speaker 1: Help you automatically jump in there and say, you know, yes,
- 20:40Speaker 1: some help or or we'll help you, or do you
- 20:42Speaker 1: have to seek them out.
- 20:43Speaker 5: There's so many different foundations and so many different corporations
- 20:48Speaker 5: that are so amazing.
- 20:50Speaker 2: Can give us one that you really stuck out to you.
- 20:53Speaker 5: Oh, there was this one. I'm trying to remember what
- 20:58Speaker 5: it was. I think it was called either a List Hollywood,
- 21:00Speaker 5: which was really really lovely group of women in.
- 21:03Speaker 2: The industry and everything.
- 21:06Speaker 5: J Lo donated some clothing. I got a pair of
- 21:08Speaker 5: Versace heels. Her I was like, she had a lot
- 21:14Speaker 5: of Louis Bauton or lou Baton heels and.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Happen it's good yeah to her size literally literally.
- 21:24Speaker 5: There was a bunch of different clothing that were donated
- 21:28Speaker 5: through different people in the industry, which was so lovely
- 21:32Speaker 5: because I think the community itself, it's so strong, and
- 21:35Speaker 5: that's what I learned throughout this whole situation, and I'd
- 21:39Speaker 5: say that was one. I think that's what it's called.
- 21:42Speaker 5: I think it's called a Hollywood you know, that's one,
- 21:46Speaker 5: and then I love there's this one called Frankie's Bikinis,
- 21:51Speaker 5: which was really cute, and they had a bunch of
- 21:53Speaker 5: like swimwear stuff and very high end, very nice, and
- 21:56Speaker 5: they you could pick like three different outfits and three
- 21:59Speaker 5: different things, and it was like by appointment only to
- 22:04Speaker 5: rag and Bone did one as well, okay for jeans,
- 22:07Speaker 5: which was lovely. And then there was one at this
- 22:10Speaker 5: like an editorial house like in the like the parking
- 22:14Speaker 5: lot that a good friend of mine told me about
- 22:18Speaker 5: and he also like lost his place in the fire,
- 22:20Speaker 5: and so he told me about it, and he told
- 22:22Speaker 5: me to go there, and everybody there was so lovely
- 22:24Speaker 5: as well, and so I don't know, I think also
- 22:28Speaker 5: being able, like a bunch of my childhood friends also
- 22:31Speaker 5: lost their place, so like we're all kind of in
- 22:33Speaker 5: the same boat. But I think being able to have
- 22:36Speaker 5: a strong community and like be there for one another.
- 22:38Speaker 1: So that's that's at the Mom's Club that we have
- 22:43Speaker 1: by our zoomer moms, because I'm sure they have a
- 22:45Speaker 1: lot of questions. So welcome zoomer moms. Welcome to the
- 22:48Speaker 1: Mom's Club. Well, let's start with Annie tell us a
- 22:56Speaker 1: little bit about where you're from, and do you have
- 22:58Speaker 1: any children? And do you have a question for a
- 23:00Speaker 1: soul day?
- 23:01Speaker 8: I do, I do, and I do.
- 23:04Speaker 5: So.
- 23:06Speaker 9: I am a mom of two boys, one of which
- 23:09Speaker 9: is the younger. He's twenty six, and I guess we
- 23:16Speaker 9: have a little bit in common in that I was
- 23:19Speaker 9: his manager for a time when he was growing up.
- 23:22Speaker 9: He's a guitar player. He's in a band in Chicago
- 23:27Speaker 9: and it's called the Untold And it's leading to my
- 23:30Speaker 9: question for her. They have reported some really good music
- 23:35Speaker 9: in the last year that has to do with mental
- 23:37Speaker 9: health issues, which is a huge topic front now for
- 23:41Speaker 9: lots of reasons.
- 23:43Speaker 10: But I guess where I want to go with her
- 23:45Speaker 10: is today.
- 23:47Speaker 9: From what I'm seeing, she seems to be in a
- 23:49Speaker 9: good play. I try to, But what I want to
- 23:54Speaker 9: know is how did you get there?
- 23:57Speaker 8: Like, you know, did you.
- 23:59Speaker 10: Go somewhere or even your parents for you know, counseling,
- 24:03Speaker 10: or did you all join a group a support group,
- 24:08Speaker 10: because you do seem to be I guess resolved not
- 24:13Speaker 10: be a good word with you. Said, you know you
- 24:17Speaker 10: had that loss, now, but how did you get to
- 24:19Speaker 10: that place? Because it had to be devastating for at
- 24:23Speaker 10: least a few weeks.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Good question, A great question.
- 24:27Speaker 5: I think that's an amazing question and something that I
- 24:30Speaker 5: actually want to actually talk about with you guys. I
- 24:33Speaker 5: think mental health is so huge. My mental health was
- 24:37Speaker 5: never this good. Ever. I think that if my younger
- 24:43Speaker 5: self would have saw me, she would have been so
- 24:46Speaker 5: so proud. And I think that as a kid there.
- 24:51Speaker 5: I was actually just talking about this with a friend
- 24:53Speaker 5: of mine in the car the other day, and I
- 24:56Speaker 5: think there's so many different things that you know, you
- 25:00Speaker 5: you surround yourself with different people in your environment. I mean,
- 25:03Speaker 5: there was a time where I want to be so honest,
- 25:07Speaker 5: I was suicidal when I was sixteen years old, and
- 25:10Speaker 5: it was something where I was at a really dark
- 25:12Speaker 5: place in my life and it was difficult to be
- 25:16Speaker 5: able to want to live on planet Earth. And that
- 25:19Speaker 5: was at a time where I was trying to figure
- 25:22Speaker 5: out myself because I either by teachers that I had
- 25:26Speaker 5: in my life, told that I was not good enough,
- 25:28Speaker 5: that I'd become a failure. And this is by people
- 25:32Speaker 5: that I cared about in my life, not my parents.
- 25:34Speaker 5: My parents were definitely there for me, but I think
- 25:37Speaker 5: they were always trying to be strong for me and
- 25:40Speaker 5: so I wanted to be strong for myself so I
- 25:43Speaker 5: could be strong for others. And I took mental health
- 25:47Speaker 5: into my own hands when I knew I was going downhill.
- 25:52Speaker 5: There was a couple other situations that I feel are
- 25:54Speaker 5: super important to talk about. I got interrogated by the
- 25:57Speaker 5: police when I was sixteen years old and they handcuffed
- 26:01Speaker 5: my hands behind a chair in somebody's office without my
- 26:05Speaker 5: parents knowing about it. And I was at a camp
- 26:07Speaker 5: in Michigan, and that scared the living daylights out of me,
- 26:12Speaker 5: and I didn't know who to talk to try. I
- 26:15Speaker 5: felt like I lost a lot of trust in humankind,
- 26:19Speaker 5: and then I started to regain it after I started
- 26:21Speaker 5: to love myself again. And I was always like wanting
- 26:25Speaker 5: to be there for myself. I always wanted to love myself,
- 26:28Speaker 5: and I think everybody should. Everybody should love their self,
- 26:30Speaker 5: you know, fully to love somebody else. And so I
- 26:35Speaker 5: really took mental health seriously because I was an absolute toll.
- 26:40Speaker 5: And so I decided that I was going to go
- 26:42Speaker 5: to counseling. It was super expensive. I had a family
- 26:46Speaker 5: friend who was a psychologist and she helped me, and
- 26:49Speaker 5: she saved my life multiple times. When I was sixteen
- 26:53Speaker 5: and I am now free of that.
- 26:56Speaker 4: I speak fly about it and I think that really help.
- 27:00Speaker 5: Yeah, for sure, So I I took better help. I mean,
- 27:05Speaker 5: I don't know if this should be a sponsor had
- 27:07Speaker 5: for better help, better help sponsor me?
- 27:10Speaker 3: I love you.
- 27:12Speaker 1: The best endorsement is one for the genuine.
- 27:15Speaker 4: Why people know about it, if it really helped, it
- 27:19Speaker 4: really helped it.
- 27:20Speaker 5: Really mean did I had this amazing counselor and she
- 27:25Speaker 5: one counselor. Yes, and she like was so amazing and
- 27:31Speaker 5: I had her in my life. But I also like
- 27:34Speaker 5: when I was doing classical music because I was classically
- 27:37Speaker 5: trained and violin for seventeen years and now I'm a
- 27:40Speaker 5: pop singer. So definitely a change, you know. But I
- 27:46Speaker 5: the thing is is that like I had a teacher,
- 27:48Speaker 5: a violent teer, I had a couple of violent teachers
- 27:50Speaker 5: that were very different from one another. The first one
- 27:53Speaker 5: was not my favorite and I and I wish her
- 27:57Speaker 5: the best, I really do, you know. I think she
- 28:00Speaker 5: helped me and she hurt me the very same time.
- 28:02Speaker 5: And she was the one that was telling me I
- 28:04Speaker 5: wasn't good enough and You'll never be good enough to
- 28:06Speaker 5: be playing this orchestra. Because you never do this, and
- 28:10Speaker 5: I think critigue is such a toxic thing to do.
- 28:13Speaker 5: I mean, critique is great, but in a healthy way
- 28:16Speaker 5: it should be maintained. But it was very toxic for
- 28:20Speaker 5: a very long time, for about like maybe ten years,
- 28:22Speaker 5: and so I told myself, I'm like, I'm not going
- 28:25Speaker 5: to go through that. And then I went through another
- 28:27Speaker 5: teacher who was lovely, but it was hard for me
- 28:30Speaker 5: to open up. Yeah, even with playing already been shut down.
- 28:33Speaker 5: You've already been shut down, yes, exactly. And so she
- 28:37Speaker 5: was lovely, but she decided to go another path with
- 28:40Speaker 5: profession and she went to become an incredible teacher at
- 28:43Speaker 5: UVEM at the University of Michigan.
- 28:46Speaker 1: So what I'm hearing too, it's like, if you look
- 28:48Speaker 1: at that experience, which was pretty devastating at the time,
- 28:51Speaker 1: and you you got counseling, you dealt with it. If
- 28:55Speaker 1: someone were to tell people a scenario and say, what
- 28:58Speaker 1: would be worse just having a really rough we can
- 29:02Speaker 1: even call it abusive at times situation as a child
- 29:06Speaker 1: or having your house burned down, most people would think
- 29:10Speaker 1: the thing that would make you come out the other
- 29:12Speaker 1: side not as together and saying I'm feeling better than
- 29:15Speaker 1: I ever felt before would be the house burning down.
- 29:18Speaker 1: So yeah, so you are really a testimony to the
- 29:23Speaker 1: good counseling you did get.
- 29:25Speaker 5: Thank you. I yeah, well yeah, going, going more on
- 29:29Speaker 5: that topic is even the people around you are the
- 29:34Speaker 5: most influential in your life, you know, and.
- 29:36Speaker 1: So have your parents been They've been positive for you,
- 29:40Speaker 1: they've had a good attitude and been positive, or.
- 29:43Speaker 5: They've had mixed mixed attitudes. But that is so okay
- 29:47Speaker 5: because they've been going, they've been.
- 29:48Speaker 1: They've been through well, let me not miss our other
- 29:51Speaker 1: Zoomer moms here.
- 29:52Speaker 3: So that's okay.
- 29:54Speaker 5: So it's such a good question.
- 29:56Speaker 1: Yes, it was excellent question. Thank you, Annie. Billy Ray.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Mom's Club. Please tell us your name,
- 30:02Speaker 1: where you're from, and do you have a question for
- 30:06Speaker 1: the Soul Day.
- 30:07Speaker 8: Yeah, hi everybody, Billy Ray here. I am actually a
- 30:12Speaker 8: new mom. I have a five month old daughter.
- 30:14Speaker 1: Congratulations, congratulations.
- 30:16Speaker 5: That's amazing.
- 30:17Speaker 8: On on a learning journey for sure.
- 30:21Speaker 6: But yeah, it's been great and thank you for sharing
- 30:24Speaker 6: your story.
- 30:24Speaker 8: It's it's it's really nice to hear the sort.
- 30:28Speaker 6: Of human side of a lot of the natural disasters
- 30:31Speaker 6: that our country is facing.
- 30:32Speaker 8: Actually work in the clean energy industry, and.
- 30:33Speaker 6: I think a lot about resilience for our buildings and
- 30:38Speaker 6: other sort of physical spaces.
- 30:41Speaker 8: But kind of similar to Anny's question, I'm wondering what kind.
- 30:44Speaker 6: Of skills or you know, sort of foundational efforts you've
- 30:50Speaker 6: made to become more.
- 30:52Speaker 8: Resilient in the face of disaster. And it sounds like
- 30:54Speaker 8: you have a few different examples of that. So just
- 30:56Speaker 8: love to hear your thoughts on that.
- 30:58Speaker 5: That's a really good question.
- 31:00Speaker 2: Well, what makes you resilient, babe girl?
- 31:04Speaker 5: So many things? I think what makes me resilient? That wow,
- 31:09Speaker 5: that truly, that's an amazing question. And I love your name,
- 31:13Speaker 5: by the way, beautiful name. I think what makes me
- 31:17Speaker 5: resilient is the fact that even through all these different hardships,
- 31:23Speaker 5: I still had faith in humanity and I still love.
- 31:27Speaker 5: I love people. I love people, I love being around people.
- 31:31Speaker 5: I'm a people person. I will never not be even
- 31:34Speaker 5: when Chico is crazy, I will never not be. I
- 31:38Speaker 5: love people because I think I just see the good
- 31:40Speaker 5: in them good and I always try to even at
- 31:44Speaker 5: the worst. And I think that was one thing that
- 31:47Speaker 5: makes me resilient. But also I think when you learn
- 31:51Speaker 5: how to be there for yourself through all these different circumstances,
- 31:56Speaker 5: whether it's it being you know, emotional abuse, or whether
- 32:00Speaker 5: it being your house burning down, or whether it be
- 32:03Speaker 5: something crazy happening, or or you like or you're yeah,
- 32:08Speaker 5: exactly like all these different things happening in life. I
- 32:11Speaker 5: think the things that make you resilient are your mindset,
- 32:16Speaker 5: you know, the mindset that you carry within yourself. I
- 32:19Speaker 5: think affirmation. I go by affirmations all the time. I
- 32:22Speaker 5: think I listen on my headset. I was coming here
- 32:26Speaker 5: in an uber listening to affirmations and Tate McCray.
- 32:30Speaker 1: So, but does it help to to be to be
- 32:33Speaker 1: prepared like a lot of people not to be going
- 32:36Speaker 1: the Scouting program necessarily, but where at a place goes
- 32:39Speaker 1: to like what Billy Ray does for her career. You know,
- 32:45Speaker 1: like if I had to evacuate my house, I might
- 32:48Speaker 1: not know where to go if I had nowhere to live,
- 32:52Speaker 1: or the power went out, which should happen one time,
- 32:54Speaker 1: and I did not handle that very well because you know,
- 32:57Speaker 1: it's not that kind of person.
- 32:58Speaker 3: But that's what's bad, like I could starve to death.
- 33:01Speaker 3: Does it help to do you feel literally another show?
- 33:15Speaker 1: But I mean, do you feel now like, Okay, if
- 33:16Speaker 1: something happened, that's I'm prepared to deal with anything.
- 33:22Speaker 3: Like I've got myself.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I didn't get in a bad situation like starving to death.
- 33:27Speaker 3: I knew what to do.
- 33:29Speaker 1: You also feel like you know you're all because there's
- 33:32Speaker 1: a lot of internal things you're talking about, which are awesome,
- 33:36Speaker 1: thank you, but yes, but if you're starving because you're
- 33:39Speaker 1: no power, I do. I recommend people prepare themselves for
- 33:45Speaker 1: what could happen, because there's plenty of things that could
- 33:47Speaker 1: happen these days, with you know, climate change and everything.
- 33:50Speaker 1: They were losing worse storms that the people are finding
- 33:53Speaker 1: themselves in a similar situation, and some of them were
- 33:56Speaker 1: truly homeless. I mean we're in shelter or living in
- 34:01Speaker 1: their car or what. So did you find yourself did
- 34:04Speaker 1: you or do you feel now more prepared to deal
- 34:07Speaker 1: with if the worst thing, yeah, happened, you're ready because
- 34:10Speaker 1: you've been through it and you're yeah, you got it.
- 34:13Speaker 5: I do. I honestly feel that the community is so
- 34:16Speaker 5: important now because that was the only reason how my
- 34:19Speaker 5: family and I got house.
- 34:21Speaker 2: And where are you living.
- 34:22Speaker 5: We're in Plia del Rey, which is near Marina. It's
- 34:25Speaker 5: this cute little area. It's like a beach town.
- 34:27Speaker 2: And are you renting or friends or how does.
- 34:30Speaker 5: This friends renting situation? But it's really lovely because we're
- 34:34Speaker 5: super grateful for them and they're they're close friends. And
- 34:39Speaker 5: you know, right as we were, we were like at
- 34:41Speaker 5: our you know, trying to put some stuff away in
- 34:44Speaker 5: a different place right after the fires, and we were
- 34:47Speaker 5: checking on the house because we had a ring camera
- 34:50Speaker 5: and so we were just at this one little place
- 34:55Speaker 5: and we were just watching our house burn down to
- 34:58Speaker 5: the ground, and we had so many people reaching out
- 35:01Speaker 5: and so lovely, and honestly, I'm just so blessed and
- 35:05Speaker 5: so grateful for everybody that's either reached out or has
- 35:08Speaker 5: been in my life or has sent me prayers or
- 35:11Speaker 5: has you know, there's so many.
- 35:13Speaker 1: It's really the support, so I should not fear starving
- 35:17Speaker 1: to death. Jeanne Video, jan Welcome to the Mom's Club.
- 35:22Speaker 1: Tell us your name and where you're from, and a
- 35:25Speaker 1: little bit about yourself and do you have a question
