Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / Voters TORCH 'washed up' Obama ahead of elections 'He let this country down'
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, some New Jersey voters are saying they were absolutely
- 0:03Speaker 1: not moved by former President Barack Obama's visit to the
- 0:06Speaker 1: Garden State on Saturday. Some are telling Fox Digital Obama's
- 0:10Speaker 1: eleventh hour campaigning for gubernatorial candidate Mikey Cheryl seemed like
- 0:14Speaker 1: the Democrats were throwing a Hail Mary to win what's
- 0:18Speaker 1: now become a close race.
- 0:20Speaker 2: We're done here in Barack Obama try to tell us
- 0:23Speaker 2: how we're supposed to boot.
- 0:24Speaker 3: He let his country down, but especially let down a
- 0:26Speaker 3: lot of African Americans, So we really don't want to
- 0:28Speaker 3: hear him tell us how we're supposed to move.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Usually when they bring in Obama and the washups hate
- 0:34Speaker 2: to say some of the washups, usually that means they're desperate.
- 0:39Speaker 2: The wash ups.
- 0:40Speaker 1: Well, some New Jersey Democrats say their vote is their
- 0:43Speaker 1: way of standing up to President Trump.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Your thoughts, you know, it's really interesting to watch President
- 1:02Speaker 4: Barack Obama. Look, it's normal for past presidents to be
- 1:04Speaker 4: quiet and kind of let things play out, and you know,
- 1:06Speaker 4: certainly don't blame him for taking that approach, but he
- 1:09Speaker 4: tries to be on the right side of the issues
- 1:12Speaker 4: within his party. On background to reporters, and I've noticed
- 1:14Speaker 4: this trend. We were all sitting together at the R
- 1:17Speaker 4: and C when the New York Times headline pop Wthington
- 1:19Speaker 4: post headline, I should say, Obama tells allies Biden's path
- 1:22Speaker 4: to winning reelection has greatly diminished, according to multiple people
- 1:25Speaker 4: who are briefed on the matter, so he essentially unleashed
- 1:28Speaker 4: his allies to release that headline. It's typically how it works. Well,
- 1:31Speaker 4: then all of a sudden Sunday, you get a new headline,
- 1:33Speaker 4: this one in the New York Times. Obama calls Mom
- 1:35Speaker 4: Donnie to praise his campaign, offers to be a sounding board.
- 1:38Speaker 4: According to two people immediately briefed on the matter, Once again,
- 1:42Speaker 4: very likely, President Obama unleashed his team to go background
- 1:45Speaker 4: to reporters. So rather than being a bold voice who
- 1:48Speaker 4: kind of shapes his party on true social the way
- 1:50Speaker 4: Trump does, it's hey, he's bold. Nonetheless, he does it
- 1:53Speaker 4: to reporters on background, that's my guess. And it's just
- 1:56Speaker 4: interesting to watch that takes shape, and you know, nothing
- 1:58Speaker 4: wrong with it, but it's just an interesting way to Yeah,
- 2:01Speaker 4: you know, Bill, he did that.
- 2:02Speaker 1: In New Jersey. He did that, and the Commonwealth of Virginia,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and he told Mom Donnie report show just a couple
- 2:09Speaker 1: of days ago that you know, basically it also ran.
- 2:13Speaker 1: So when you get in there, let me know if
- 2:15Speaker 1: I can support you in any way.
- 2:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I would go back to the original conversation thirty
- 2:19Speaker 2: minutes ago about which Democratic members of Congress here in
- 2:21Speaker 2: New York endorsed Mama Donna and which ones did not
- 2:24Speaker 2: because Obama did not. I mean you said he had
- 2:27Speaker 2: a conversation and when he used me as a sounding
- 2:29Speaker 2: board and there for you, but he did not offer
- 2:30Speaker 2: an endorsement. I think with regard to where he was
- 2:33Speaker 2: in New Jersey in Virginia, what I look for is
- 2:35Speaker 2: like what town do you choose? What county do you choose?
- 2:38Speaker 2: He went to Newark, That's Essex County. I mean, it's
- 2:41Speaker 2: one of the three highest populated counties in the entire state.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Trying to drive the vote out in Virginia, he went
- 2:47Speaker 2: to the southeast side, down around the tide Waterhampton Roads
- 2:50Speaker 2: area in the Norfolk region. There strong black population there.
- 2:55Speaker 2: They had two colleges as well, So I mean, maybe
- 2:58Speaker 2: maybe they see some weakness right now in that part
- 3:00Speaker 2: of the voting public. You want to drive that out
- 3:02Speaker 2: a little bit. I mean maybe has something to do
- 3:05Speaker 2: with it, but I think the lack of it. I
- 3:07Speaker 2: don't understand why the Speaker of the House at Denver
- 3:09Speaker 2: got because Akeem Jefferies would endorse Mom Donnie and Obama
- 3:13Speaker 2: would not. I just don't get it. One more thing
- 3:15Speaker 2: on a throw out there. Kathy Hoko was this event
- 3:17Speaker 2: about a week ago, and they were all screaming. She
- 3:21Speaker 2: was there for Mom Donnie. They were saying tax the rich.
- 3:23Speaker 2: She said, I can hear you. And the next day
- 3:25Speaker 2: she said, I thought they were saying, let's go bills bill.
- 3:29Speaker 4: What this one got by me?
- 3:32Speaker 2: You know, tax the rich, Let's go bills. I mean
- 3:35Speaker 2: it sounds a lot like let's.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Let's go Brandon.
- 3:38Speaker 1: She needs some like hearing support there. Well, it's interesting
- 3:41Speaker 1: because I hadn't gamed out that maybe those are the
- 3:43Speaker 1: weaker areas, but it makes perfect sense. Maybe Newark also
- 3:46Speaker 1: has a high black population. What happened with Obama and
- 3:49Speaker 1: Kamala Harris. He wasn't able to bring her over the
- 3:51Speaker 1: threshold because he actually angered black men when he preached
- 3:55Speaker 1: to them that they didn't love black women if they
- 3:56Speaker 1: didn't vote for her. I mean maybe he wasn't the
- 3:58Speaker 1: guy to send in Martha.
- 4:00Speaker 5: I mean, it's also interesting just listening to what you're saying, Kaylee,
- 4:03Speaker 5: about putting the message out there. You also have George
- 4:07Speaker 5: Clooney coming out and saying, you know, the whole Kamala
- 4:10Speaker 5: thing wasn't a great idea, and he's the person who
- 4:13Speaker 5: lit the fire really under pushing Biden out, and there
- 4:17Speaker 5: was a lot of discussion that that was what Obama,
- 4:19Speaker 5: you know, sort of released him to do, to say,
- 4:22Speaker 5: all right, we're going to pull the legs out from
- 4:24Speaker 5: under Joe Biden and figure out if we can do
- 4:26Speaker 5: something differently here. It's very interesting to watch this dance
- 4:29Speaker 5: with Hakeem Jeffries Schumer. I think it's you know, I
- 4:32Speaker 5: don't think anyone really would care either way if he
- 4:35Speaker 5: came out and gave an endorsement to Mom Donnie or
- 4:37Speaker 5: not at this point. But you see this dance where
- 4:40Speaker 5: everyone's you know, you remember that old expression like you
- 4:43Speaker 5: can't be a little bit pregnant, right, So it's like,
- 4:45Speaker 5: how close are you going to go to Mom Donnie?
- 4:48Speaker 5: And you see people trying to weave this line because
- 4:51Speaker 5: they don't know is this the way the party is
- 4:53Speaker 5: going and do I need to warm up to this
- 4:56Speaker 5: branch of the party or can I stay over here
- 4:59Speaker 5: like on Fatterman, for example, who's becoming the most interesting
- 5:02Speaker 5: Democrat out there, who I'm going to have on the
- 5:05Speaker 5: show later today. You know, you can see this sort
- 5:09Speaker 5: of dance between these two things. It's very hard to
- 5:11Speaker 5: sort of be a little bit socialist.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, And I think carrying that it's sort of
- 5:20Speaker 3: message discipline over substance. I see it because we don't
- 5:23Speaker 3: have anything from Obama in the way of policy articulation
- 5:26Speaker 3: or specifics. Right, he's out there at this as this catalyst,
- 5:29Speaker 3: not really an endorser, and he's essentially saying we'll stay
- 5:32Speaker 3: within party lines. But to my earlier point about New
- 5:35Speaker 3: York City, well, one, don't the party lines actually be
- 5:37Speaker 3: Andrew Cuomo. Like, if this was actually President Obama and
- 5:40Speaker 3: the policies that I think he supports, it wouldn't be
- 5:44Speaker 3: half of these people. But they are so beholden to
- 5:48Speaker 3: this radical portion of the party that you know, I
- 5:51Speaker 3: am reminded sort of of a fishook that's just drawing
- 5:54Speaker 3: them to the side because they failed in the opportunity
- 5:57Speaker 3: over these past years to come out and stay with
- 5:59Speaker 3: full authority and articulation. This is not us. And again,
- 6:04Speaker 3: to sound like a broken record from earlier, this is
- 6:06Speaker 3: the party like they could have defined those lines earlier
- 6:09Speaker 3: and instead allowed themselves to sort of be drawn by it.
- 6:12Speaker 3: And I also see this as frankly an elite echo
- 6:15Speaker 3: chamber because without that specificity of policies, he's expecting that
- 6:18Speaker 3: by walking on on the stage, someone will say, oh, okay, yes,
- 6:22Speaker 3: that's how I'm supposed to vote, not realizing that people
- 6:24Speaker 3: are actually independent thinkers. And to your point, he represented
- 6:28Speaker 3: two people, one who said you're not black if you
- 6:30Speaker 3: don't vote for me, and then another that he told
- 6:32Speaker 3: them they were racist and misogynistic if they didn't.
- 6:35Speaker 4: Vote for her. How did that go? How did it
- 6:37Speaker 4: go when.
- 6:37Speaker 3: You are told that you are not good enough and
- 6:40Speaker 3: not able to think for yourself in your decisions. So
- 6:44Speaker 3: I'm sort of curious here because I think strategically it
- 6:46Speaker 3: just shows that the Democrat Party is sort of being
- 6:48Speaker 3: ruled by the past. Oh well, Obama will fix it.
- 6:51Speaker 3: You guys made this mess and these policies will destroy you.
- 6:55Speaker 3: No amount of him will fix it well.
- 6:57Speaker 1: And Obama in particular because he went so far left.
- 7:00Speaker 1: He gave the nation Obamacare. He really did carry the
- 7:04Speaker 1: mantle very early on for the kinds of politics now
- 7:07Speaker 1: that are taking over the policy. So maybe in that
- 7:09Speaker 1: sense he was the right guy to bring in because
- 7:12Speaker 1: he must like it, he said to Zoron, Mom, Donnie
- 7:14Speaker 1: call me. I'm right there for you.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Hey, everyone, I'm Emily Campano. Catch me and my co hosts,
