- 0:34SPEAKER_02: My name is Candice Gish.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: If this is your very first time tuning into the Divas That Care, a huge welcome.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: We are now in our 14th year.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: We are listening to over 30 countries around the world and it is all because of our amazing tribe, our listeners, our hosts, everybody that's been involved with us.
- 0:50SPEAKER_02: We're just so excited that we've continued to do this.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: We meet extraordinary people and we have the KJ Kishula
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: And you can call me Kelly.
- 1:18SPEAKER_01: That's the nickname that my sister, you know, bequeathed to me when I was very small.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: I'm a children's book author and illustrator from South Africa.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: But I do a lot of extensive travel from South Africa to Paris.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: So I'm, you know, international.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: And I love drawing, I love writing, I love coffee.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: I love both my home countries that I call them home one and home two.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: I love my South African roots and I love the country that I'm moving to, which is France.
- 1:57SPEAKER_01: So that's me.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: I also do some other things on the side.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: I work with illustrations.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: I work in hybrid publishing.
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: And as you can see, I'm very involved with story.
- 2:12SPEAKER_01: I love story.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: So if you're looking for who KJ Kushel is, well, she loves story.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: She loves kids' books.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: That's me.
- 2:21SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: How did you ever get involved in writing and illustrating and being a part of the children's book industry?
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: Well, I have...
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: wanted to write since I was extremely little like I can even give you the age I was nine years old where I wanted to write and it happened all of a sudden the teacher in the class decided to task us with writing our first ever story and it completely blew my mind I wrote the story and I came up with this ending and I was like wow like everything changed for me then and so ever since then I've been you know playing with story given I wasn't you know I wasn't the great standout kid I just love story I love looking at pictures in storybooks I love reading them I love escaping in them and I loved playing with ideas so much so that sometimes I would even act them out and I could always draw and So, you know, as life goes on, you tend to get to your teens.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: You still play with it a little bit, but you move further away from it.
- 3:38SPEAKER_01: And then you get to your late 20s where, I don't know, something clicks or a light bulb comes on.
- 3:43SPEAKER_01: You're like, hey, do you remember that you like doing this?
- 3:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I kind of do.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: And then you're like, well, I think it's time now.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: So then I started to get back into it, started writing and playing with it.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: Oh, wow.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: I love children's books.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: I had mentioned to you earlier that I've been homeschooling my children for so long.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: Almost 20 years.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: And it's amazing to think that, you know, somebody's on our program that writes these books and illustrates them because I love them.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: I love children.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: just immersing ourselves into that that world and it's always inspired my children like yourself you know I have a one of my daughters is she's actually illustrating a children's book right now and I love it I I watch her do things and I find it so fascinating that she's able to do that she said you know she's always been inspired like you through her childhood to to create these characters and you know listening to children talk about them and I can see how you would be inspired and I'm just so in awe of you right now because to have that mentality to know that children's books really are the key to starting those conversations to helping them I love how you want to change the world by creating amazing magical books
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: yeah yeah that is that is definitely the mission to inspire hope and change and kindness and magic and bring back that children-esque feeling my sister and I felt growing up that I feel watching the kids today, it almost feels like it's disappeared or it's lost.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: And so I want to bring that back.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: I want kids to be inspired by story and inspired enough to be willing to change the world for the better.
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: That is the mission.
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: And I think when you stand back and look at that, you're like, yeah, let's write another one.
- 5:53SPEAKER_02: Oh, I can't wait.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: This is going to be great.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: You know, I listen to my kids every once in a while.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: And you probably did this with your sister, is that you sat there and you guys would make up stories and just kind of entertain each other by doing that.
- 6:08SPEAKER_02: And that's probably the stories that now you're writing.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: You know, for some reason, I think that my memory is lost on me there.
- 6:18SPEAKER_01: But I guarantee you, my sister and I played together a lot.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: We were playing in tents and pretending to be things.
- 6:27SPEAKER_01: And we were running around the garden, definitely doing that.
- 6:32SPEAKER_01: Of course, we were in front of the TV.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, we were 90s kids that grew up on TV, which is fine.
- 6:38SPEAKER_01: But we played outside.
- 6:42SPEAKER_01: and i think we created stories by ourselves and it's only now you know late 20s early 30s that My sister and I are actually coming together and we're telling each other our story.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: So it's actually happening now.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: And she loves the stories that I create.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: And I can't wait for her to actually write her first story.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: And so she is like a great support system now as I'm, you know, becoming an adult, which, believe me, I actually feel still much a kid.
- 7:18SPEAKER_02: I know what you mean.
- 7:19SPEAKER_02: So, Kelly, tell me about the stories that you've already created.
- 7:23SPEAKER_02: I'm really excited about that.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, definitely.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: So I've created two main...
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: concepts of stories.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: The first one is the super duper secret collection, which I'm super proud of because it's kind of like my first baby.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: It starts off with this little girl called Little Lizzie, who's very mischievous.
- 7:47SPEAKER_01: She's courageous.
- 7:49SPEAKER_01: She's inquisitive.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: And she believes in magic.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: She believes in so much because she's actually seen it.
- 7:56SPEAKER_01: So the first book is called I Caught One of Santa's Rings.
- 8:00SPEAKER_01: The second one, I captured the Easter Bunny's chicken.
- 8:05SPEAKER_01: And the third one, which has just come out, is I discovered a monster under my bed.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: I love the names.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Oh, my goodness.
- 8:14SPEAKER_01: Oh, thanks.
- 8:15SPEAKER_01: So as you can see, this character knows magic exists.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: She's seen it.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: She believes it.
- 8:22SPEAKER_01: And that is what we as kids always do.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: We believe it because we know it is true in our hearts.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: And So embedded in the super duper secret collection within these stories, there are subtle morals.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: You don't realize it when you read it.
- 8:40SPEAKER_01: You are actually reading for pure pleasure and fun.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: It's fun for the kid to hear or read.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: And it's fun for parents to read it too, because there's fun little tongue twisters in there.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: And so, yeah, that is it with that.
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: With the morals, like I caught one of Santa's reindeer, a big moral is don't lie because you'll get on the naughty list and you don't want to be on the naughty list.
- 9:11SPEAKER_01: It's also about taking care of pets because every kid wants, you know, mom, please get a dog.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: I want a dog.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: So it kind of gives you a little bit of insight into responsibility with pets.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: I captured the Easter Bunny's chicken, it's about sharing.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: You know, you as a kid always went to go find the Easter eggs in the garden and either your big brother or your little sister got more eggs than you which you know is a problem so the idea is to share your eggs with not only your sibling but with your mother and father your family too um and there's also you know you got to take care of the easter bunny's chicken because you can't just leave it locked in the shed as little as you did um So it looks at that one.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: With the monster book.
- 10:03SPEAKER_01: Now the monster book is quite fun because it's not really a holiday book like the Christmas one and the Easter one, but the monster book is about courage, bravery.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: discovery discovery of who you are as a kid as a person discovery of your own bravery discovery of friendship of books and that you can actually dive into a massive library and unearth this world that are going to take you to different places of your imagination um And there's also some sharing in there.
- 10:44SPEAKER_01: So that is the super duper secret collection.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: So what age range is this?
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: So if you have to put it in a book, I mean in a box, it probably is going to be around 8 to 12 in terms of reading level.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: But Six to 12 can read it.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: You know, I imagine that a nine-year-old brings this book to mom or dad and you have the six-year-old that's also going to be there and they're all sitting on the bed and they're all enjoying the story.
- 11:21SPEAKER_01: So those are with all my books, even the Brave Kids books, which I'll chat about now.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: And I love the family dynamics part of it.
- 11:29SPEAKER_02: You know, I've always been a big believer in Sitting down, we would spend a lot of time on the couch and reading out loud as a family.
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: And those are the magical times.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: And we talk about it still, how my kids really enjoy that.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: And they're like, can we still do that?
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: I'm like, you realize how old you are now.
- 11:49SPEAKER_02: But we still love doing stuff like that.
- 11:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, that is fabulous.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: That's fabulous.
- 11:54SPEAKER_01: Yes, I'm a big avid supporter, cheerleader for parents and kids sitting down on the bed or, you know, in front of the fireplace, wherever you want to be and connecting over story because story does connect us.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: It connects us, you know, we can be miles apart.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: apart continents apart but if we read in the same story we can connect over you know the phone technology is great and we can chat about it we can start a conversation we can ask the questions that we need to ask and that is why it's so important it really it brings us together in ways that I honestly think we probably have forgotten.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: You know what?
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: I will agree with you, Kelly.
- 12:41SPEAKER_02: I even find now in life that my husband and my oldest daughter, they do a lot of audio books and they do them together and then they have conversations and they talk about things.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, that's an amazing way to bond with somebody.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: Oh,
- 12:53SPEAKER_01: yeah, most definitely.
- 12:55SPEAKER_01: Most definitely.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: So tell me more about your other books, because this is the part I'm really excited about also.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: So the other side of the books that we have published is these books called Brave Kids, short stories to inspire our world changes.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: And so what it is, is a collaboration.
- 13:16SPEAKER_01: It comes, it takes 24 authors from around the world and they all write these short stories with a mission to change the world through stories.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: Now with these stories, you know, they're, they really great because they've got lessons morals teachings embedded in with them you can't go to a nine-year-old kid and be like hey you know i see you're struggling with this bully this is what you're going to do it most likely is going to go over there but if a child who's maybe he's having to deal with a bully or stage fright or grief has a story that they can read by themselves or hear and connect with the character they're most likely going to compare their situation with the character and be like hey you know that character in this story in this book did this I'm going to try it and see how it works for me so I'm very proud of these books because I believe that they are going to change, you know, the way kids think, the way they grow up.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: And essentially, they're going to pass it down to their kids.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: So the next generation is going to get it.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: And so it's going to change hearts, minds, souls, generations from now.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 14:40SPEAKER_02: I love that so much.
- 14:42SPEAKER_02: And you and I were talking about that before the program and how much I think that we need more books like this.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Kelly, one of the things I'd love you to do, too, is if you could post all about this in our Changemakers Cafe so that all of our listeners, our tribe that tunes into the Divas at Care Network will be able to check that out.
- 15:00SPEAKER_01: Oh, certainly.
- 15:01SPEAKER_01: I'll definitely go do that.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: And then you can find out all the juicy information.
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: You can click on it.
- 15:06SPEAKER_01: So it's easy for whoever's listening.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Excellent.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: Kelly, what is next for you?
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: What else do you have happening in the future here?
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm actually currently busy gathering authors for Brave Kids Volume 3 because we've got Volume 1 and 2 out.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And so we're gathering people who want to write children's stories and want to change the world as well.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: They'll be one of the 24 authors in Brave Kids 3.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: And we kick off in about January until the book will come out next year, June.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: And so while that's going on, I'm also part of some collaborations.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: So I'm going to be doing my first poetry book.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: I'm also going to be part of a collaboration and I'll be writing some poems.
- 15:58SPEAKER_01: And I'm also going to continue little Lizzie's adventure in the SuperDuper Secret Collection.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: I have a bunch of titles that I want to play with.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: And so I can't wait to get started on her next adventure.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: I can give you a clue.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: It most likely is going to deal with little Lizzie losing her fourth tooth and trapping the tooth fairy's mouse and having to figure out her adventure with that.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: I
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: like that.
- 16:29SPEAKER_02: This is going to be, this is wonderful.
- 16:31SPEAKER_02: You are doing so many things out there.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I can't believe it too.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: And I look back at it, I kind of am as bitter in a state of shock, like, okay, well, that happened.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: Let's keep going.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: Just keep going.
- 16:45SPEAKER_02: Excellent.
- 16:46SPEAKER_02: I love this.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: Kelly, can you give us your website where they can go and check you out, check out your books, check out all that?
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, most certainly.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: So you can check everything out on www.kjfischler.com.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: And that is Kashula spelled K-A-S-C-H-U-L-A.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: download that you can find out more about the characters more about me you can just go have fun and absolutely explore and join the email list because then you'll get all the news first
- 17:44SPEAKER_02: oh thank you so much I can't wait to share this with all of our listeners out there
- 17:49SPEAKER_01: I'm so excited for everyone that's going to that is going to read this and it's going to sit back and be like, yeah, I needed to hear this.
- 17:58SPEAKER_01: I needed to read it.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: And they're going to feel so much good, so much good energy, good vibes.
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: So I'm happy that people get to read those.
- 18:07SPEAKER_02: Oh, that is so wonderful.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: And Kelly, last thing I want to do ask you today is what kind of tips do you have for our listeners today?
- 18:14SPEAKER_02: Perhaps if they're looking at writing, being a part of the right, being a writer or being an illustrator or tips to balance their lives when they're traveling, like with yourself, you're traveling all the time.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: How are you able to balance it all?
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's do the balancing one first and then I'll give you some tips.
- 18:33SPEAKER_01: To balancing, you have to know why you're doing it.
- 18:39SPEAKER_01: The big reason is why.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: Once you've got that figured out, then the other parts fall into place.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: And connecting with those that support you and love you is very important.
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Understanding the balance between your work life, your relationship and your family.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: And remembering that life is not just a speeding bullet train.
- 19:08SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's great to be on when you are very ambitious, but sometimes that speeding train needs to pull into the station.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: You need to get off for a while.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: You need to connect with family, friends, maybe just even just having a coffee in the morning and looking into the sunshine.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: So finding that balance is very key.
- 19:30SPEAKER_01: It is hard work, no doubt about it, but the rewards in the end are even greater when you have connected with yourself, your loved ones, your homes, especially if you're traveling, connecting with those with, you know, where you call home one, home two, home three, et cetera.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: So that's balance.
- 19:52SPEAKER_01: Some tips.
- 19:55SPEAKER_01: Sorry, I was talking a bit.
- 19:56SPEAKER_01: You wanted tips on...
- 19:58SPEAKER_02: You know, if a person was looking, I just want to say thank you for that, though, because I think it's really important to connect and to make things.
- 20:06SPEAKER_02: It's hard nowadays.
- 20:09SPEAKER_02: I think that a few years ago when all the changes happened and things kind of shut down, those communication styles and being around people.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: families and friends and a more intimate face to face, you know, kind of went away and getting back into that is the most important thing.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: And I shared that tip quite a bit on our program.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: You know, we miss that connection.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: And I always say that really does help balance yourself out is when you're able to do what you were saying is, you know, connect, you know, be around people, have a coffee, have a conversation and just have those, those real conversations again.
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: And I think it's really important.
- 20:48SPEAKER_02: So I did definitely want to thank you for that.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: The tip that I had, or I was asking is, you know, if a person was wanting to become a writer or an illustrator, do
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: you have
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: any tips for them?
- 20:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, yes.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 21:00SPEAKER_01: So the, the biggest tip of all is know what you want.
- 21:06SPEAKER_01: If you really want to do it, then nobody can stand in your way.
- 21:11SPEAKER_01: Not even you, you need to push yourself.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: You need to create deadlines, deadlines.
- 21:18SPEAKER_01: I know it might seem like, oh, I used to do deadlines in school.
- 21:22SPEAKER_01: It was, you know, you have childhood trauma, blah, blah, blah.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: But the point is those deadlines push you.
- 21:28SPEAKER_01: especially when you are doing it for you, because that is the main thing.
- 21:32SPEAKER_01: You do it for you.
- 21:33SPEAKER_01: You put deadlines in.
- 21:34SPEAKER_01: You get it done.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: Once it's done, you can edit and play with it as much as you want.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: So that is the biggest tip there.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: The second tip is just keep going.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: Just keep going.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: Once you do one, do the next one.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Once you do the next one, do the next next one.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: And then soon enough you'll look back and a couple of years has gone by and you'll be like someone will point it out to you and be like hey you know you've done five books I'm like yeah I've done five books what okay I did five books I didn't even realize it yeah um so that's the biggest tip yeah I always say to people, be like Dory from Finding Nemo, just keep swimming, swimming.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: So it'll be, it'll be just keep writing, writing, just keep drawing, drawing.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: And then
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: it's good.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, Kelly, everything you've been saying today.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: I'll just, that is so funny because if you look at, my motto in life it is just keep swimming and everything that we're you and I talk about and I'm like we're like soul sisters or something
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: I was just thinking of that that when I was like oh my word this
- 22:43SPEAKER_02: is soul sister moment this is awesome you're awesome it's like you know we've known each other and I'm like this is just another me in another part of the world I think it's fantastic thank you so much for coming on to our program I hope that you come back on I really enjoyed today and I really think that we could dive into some other topics here and really inspire the listeners you know we're all about creating change makers around the world and inspiring people and having them you know just do one thing to help somebody else and I always believe in that ripple effect if you could do some short small thing of kindness to help others then it's going to come back
- 23:23SPEAKER_01: oh yes oh my god beautiful yes and now that you say that I wanted to say that You know, all my books, I like, I love the idea of giving a book as a gift.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: So all my books, if you get them in paperback, you'll see they got these nice dedicated papers to you as the buyer that says, for example, this Brave Kid book is gifted to, and then you can write whoever you're gifting it to, and you can write a beautiful message to whoever you're going to give it to.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: And that is, that's the whole idea, just passing along the magic
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: yeah hang it forward oh Kelly thank you so much for coming on to the Divas at Care I really as I said I had a great time I'm going to be posting all your information on all of our social media and I would love as I said to connect with you again oh
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: I would love that I thought this was fabulous and I hope the listeners that are listening really enjoyed coming on this cup of tea and coffee ride with you and
