- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Thursday, it's the 20th of
- 0:16November, and today it's very exciting.
- 0:19We get to open up. How can you smell it?
- 0:23It's that new book of the Bible smell.
- 0:25Today we're going to start reading through the Book of
- 0:27Galatians. This is a letter that Paul
- 0:31writes to the church in Galatia, and that church is going through
- 0:36a challenging time because they are trying to weigh things up.
- 0:40What do we do? We have been good Jews our whole
- 0:43life. We've followed the teachings of
- 0:45the Torah, and that is how we prove that we are good Jews.
- 0:49But now all of a sudden we don't know what to do.
- 0:52And so we think we still have to follow the Torah.
- 0:55And so Paul is writing to them to encourage them to say no.
- 0:59Don't be trapped into thinking that that is the way you win
- 1:02God's approval. Be filled with the Holy Spirit
- 1:06and follow Jesus teaching. This is the way of our faith
- 1:10now. So it's about a community
- 1:13grappling with letting go of the old and embracing the new and
- 1:18Paul's encouragement for them to do that.
- 1:20But before he can do that, he's going to prove that he is worth
- 1:22listening to. So the opening of this letter,
- 1:24the first two chapters really are like a a resume ACV of Paul
- 1:29trying to convince them that he is indeed able to write with
- 1:32some authority. So let U.S.
- 1:35Open up this treasure trove of encouragement to be filled with
- 1:38God's Spirit as we read together Galatians chapter 1.
- 1:52This is a letter from Paul, an apostle.
- 1:56I was not appointed by any group of people or any human
- 1:59authority, but by Jesus Christ himself and by God the Father
- 2:04who raised Jesus from the dead. All the brothers and sisters
- 2:07here join me in sending this letter to the churches of
- 2:10Galatia. May God the Father and our Lord
- 2:14Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
- 2:18Jesus gave His life for our sins just as God our Father planned
- 2:22in order to rescue us from the evil world in which we live.
- 2:26All glory to God forever and ever.
- 2:30Amen. I am shocked that you were
- 2:34turning away so soon from God who called you to Himself
- 2:38through the loving mercy of Christ.
- 2:40You were following a different way that pretends to be the good
- 2:43news but is not the good news at all.
- 2:47They were being fooled by those who deliberately twist the truth
- 2:50concerning Christ. Let God's curse fall on anyone,
- 2:55including us or even an Angel from heaven who preaches a
- 2:58different kind of good news than the one we preach to you.
- 3:02I say again what we've said before.
- 3:05If anyone preaches any other good news than the one you
- 3:09welcomed, let that person be cursed.
- 3:13Obviously, I'm not trying to win the approval of people, but of
- 3:16God. If pleasing people were my goal,
- 3:20I would not be Christ's servant. Dear brothers and sisters, I
- 3:26want you to understand that the Gospel message I preach is not
- 3:30based on mere human reasoning. I receive my message from no
- 3:34human source, and no one taught me.
- 3:37Instead, I received it by direct revelation from Jesus Christ.
- 3:44You know what I was like when I followed the Jewish religion?
- 3:47How violently I persecuted God's church.
- 3:50I did my best to destroy it. I was far ahead of my fellow
- 3:54Jews in my zeal for the traditions of my ancestors.
- 3:58But even before I was born, God chose me and called me by his
- 4:04marvellous grace. Then it pleased him to reveal
- 4:08the Son to me so that I would proclaim the good news about
- 4:12Jesus to the Gentiles. When this happened, I did not
- 4:17rush out to consult with any human being, nor did I go up to
- 4:20Jerusalem to consult with those who were apostles before I was.
- 4:24Instead I went away into Arabia and later I returned to the city
- 4:29of Damascus. Then three years later I went to
- 4:34Jerusalem to get to know Peter and I stayed with him for 15
- 4:38days. The only other apostle I met at
- 4:41that time was James, the Lord's brother.
- 4:45I declared before God that what I am writing to you is not a
- 4:49lie. After that visit I went N to the
- 4:53provinces of Syria and Sicilia and still the churches in Christ
- 4:59that are in Judea didn't know me personally.
- 5:01All they knew was that people were saying the one who used to
- 5:05persecute us is now preaching the very faith he tried to
- 5:09destroy. And they praised God because of
- 5:13me, our Lord, when the narrative of
- 5:25the world around us is so loud and powerful, telling us to go
- 5:30in one way because that is the conventional wisdom.
- 5:34Our Lord, I pray that we can have your spirit well up inside
- 5:40of us and draw us to your way to a better way.
- 5:44A way that prioritises relationship, a way that
- 5:49prioritises your ways, your ways of forgiveness, of grace, of
- 5:56focusing on our identity in you rather than our identity in this
- 6:01world. So Lord, I claim for myself and
- 6:04for everyone praying this prayer with me, that we are yours and
- 6:10that that can grow in us, to create in us an unshakeable
- 6:16foundation that continually reminds us of that truth.
- 6:22We love you, our wonderful saving Jesus, and in your name
- 6:27we pray all of these things. Amen.
