- 14:01:55Welcome to Inside West Palm Beach. I'm
- 14:01:57Gerry Marcelo. Hey, got plans for the
- 14:01:59Fourth of July this year? On today's show
- 14:02:02we're gonna be sharing details on what
- 14:02:03may be the biggest, most spectacular,
- 14:02:06fourth on Flagler in many years. Stand by
- 14:02:09because this thing's going to be epic.
- 14:02:24And joining me today is Angela Poco,
- 14:02:26Marketing and Community Events Manager
- 14:02:28for the City of West Palm Beach. Welcome
- 14:02:30back, Angela. Thank you for having me.
- 14:02:32You know, we're gonna have a lot, lot,
- 14:02:33lot, big conversation
- 14:02:34today about fourth on
- 14:02:35Flagler. But before we get started, how
- 14:02:38does one become a Marketing and Community
- 14:02:41West Palm Beach? What's your story?
- 14:02:42Where'd you come
- 14:02:43from? Wow, that, that is a
- 14:02:44story. I have been in the event industry
- 14:02:48for almost 30 years. Wow. Originally I
- 14:02:52was thinking I was gonna be a lawyer and
- 14:02:55then I worked for this company and sat
- 14:02:57next to this woman that I was just
- 14:02:59fascinated with what she did. And when I
- 14:03:03asked her, she's like, "Oh, I'm planning
- 14:03:04a national sales
- 14:03:05meeting." I'm like, "Okay."
- 14:03:08And at that point I was like, "I want to
- 14:03:12do what she's doing."
- 14:03:13Yeah. And that's kind
- 14:03:14of where my career just went, "Fwoop!"
- 14:03:16Like this. And you
- 14:03:17know, I've had the privilege
- 14:03:19of planning all over the country and for
- 14:03:21so many different countries and
- 14:03:23individuals or you know, companies and
- 14:03:25individuals. And it, it really is
- 14:03:28something that you truly love. And you
- 14:03:31know, I used to try to explain this to
- 14:03:33people, if you truly love what you do,
- 14:03:34you never really work a day in your life.
- 14:03:36Yeah. And subsequently that's gotten me
- 14:03:39to the city where I've been for 16 years.
- 14:03:41Yes. Just got to plan locally and for a
- 14:03:44community and I, that has brought me so
- 14:03:46much joy. Well, you know, actually
- 14:03:49thinking about planning, being an event
- 14:03:51planner, not only do you have to have
- 14:03:53sort of a type A personality, you also
- 14:03:55have to be a really well organized type A
- 14:03:58personality. Well, it's, it's interesting
- 14:04:01because you know, you develop skills as
- 14:04:05you go and you do have to be organized
- 14:04:07and you do have to be detailed and you
- 14:04:10have to be focused. But it's crazy
- 14:04:12sometimes how all that comes together and
- 14:04:14the people that you work with, they
- 14:04:15provide you strength and it's truly is a
- 14:04:19team effort. Like you can't do it by
- 14:04:21yourself. And a lot of what we do at the
- 14:04:23city, it's not even just our department.
- 14:04:26It takes the city to be able to produce
- 14:04:28an event, especially like this one.
- 14:04:31And our holiday one. So, you know, it's
- 14:04:33not just the event planners that plan.
- 14:04:35It's the city that helps plan and keep
- 14:04:37people safe. So we're very fortunate.
- 14:04:39Yeah, very fortunate. And you made a
- 14:04:40great point that something like a fourth
- 14:04:43on Flagler requires input and effort from
- 14:04:46so many different departments
- 14:04:48throughout the city. It's not just you
- 14:04:49guys, although you guys are at the very
- 14:04:51top of the organizing and making things
- 14:04:54happen sort of situation, you guys are
- 14:04:56tireless, but you got all these different
- 14:05:00specialties and disciplines
- 14:05:02that all have to come together, all have
- 14:05:04to be there on a certain day at a
- 14:05:06certain time to make everything come
- 14:05:07together. Right. And
- 14:05:09again, like, you know,
- 14:05:10people don't always realize that when
- 14:05:13they're out there enjoying their day off,
- 14:05:16they're off like we're behind the scenes
- 14:05:19making it work. But again, like we chose
- 14:05:21that. So I always laugh because, you
- 14:05:24know, we get to choose it, but it does
- 14:05:27come with, you know, a price sometimes
- 14:05:29with the fact that you do miss your
- 14:05:30family, but then you learn. And I learned
- 14:05:33at a very young age, make your family
- 14:05:35part of it. So my family grew up with me
- 14:05:38doing this and they just know, like
- 14:05:41sometimes they're an extra hand. My kids
- 14:05:43have all been in character with
- 14:05:45different things. You know, my husband
- 14:05:48has helped participate in and handed
- 14:05:50things out and moved a table. So it
- 14:05:53really does become that's what our
- 14:05:55celebration is about. You know, yes,
- 14:05:57we're together, maybe
- 14:05:58not traditionally, but
- 14:06:00we're together giving people the
- 14:06:01opportunity to make memories and, you
- 14:06:04know, just make their day better for
- 14:06:06whatever reason. Yeah. Well, it's great.
- 14:06:08And you mentioned how fourth on Flagler
- 14:06:11has through the decades and years have
- 14:06:13become, become a tradition. So, and it's
- 14:06:17interesting because
- 14:06:17for me, fourth, fourth
- 14:06:20of July is my favorite holiday of all.
- 14:06:23And I'll tell you why. When you go to
- 14:06:26Christmas, there are certain things you
- 14:06:27have to do. It is time to get up in the
- 14:06:30morning and get the, you know, the
- 14:06:32cinnamon buns in the oven and get the
- 14:06:34coffee ready and the kids will come out
- 14:06:36and it has to happen this way. Then on
- 14:06:37Thanksgiving, you have the turkey and you
- 14:06:39have to have the can of cranberry
- 14:06:42sauce and so and so. It's programmed.
- 14:06:44It's all programmed.
- 14:06:46Whereas fourth of July is
- 14:06:48a magnificent event where you do what you
- 14:06:51want. You can go ahead and have a
- 14:06:53hot dog. You want it. You want the pizza.
- 14:06:55You want to have a rose goose. You could
- 14:06:57do, you can do whatever you want.
- 14:06:58Absolutely. In a way, fourth on Flagler,
- 14:07:02even though it is a thing that people
- 14:07:04have come to count on and look forward
- 14:07:06to, it's sort of free flowing. It seems
- 14:07:08to change from year
- 14:07:09to year. It does. And,
- 14:07:11you know, it's an interesting question
- 14:07:13that I get asked all the time. How do we
- 14:07:15make it different? And for us, we get the
- 14:07:18opportunity to theme it differently.
- 14:07:21But this is our 38th fourth on Flagler.
- 14:07:24That's amazing. So
- 14:07:25long before I was around,
- 14:07:27this magnificent event started and, you
- 14:07:30know, it's just watching it evolve and
- 14:07:33some of the different themes we've had
- 14:07:34over the years allows us that creativity
- 14:07:37to keep things fresh and keep things, you
- 14:07:39know, moving in a different direction.
- 14:07:41So every year is different. Every year is
- 14:07:43a little bit different.
- 14:07:44People could come back and expect
- 14:07:45something different every time.
- 14:07:46But the nice thing about it too is
- 14:07:48there's also certain
- 14:07:49things that stay the same.
- 14:07:51So, you know, we know we're going to have
- 14:07:53fireworks, you know.
- 14:07:55We know there's going
- 14:07:56to be entertainment. There'll be food.
- 14:07:57There'll be beverage. Those things stay
- 14:07:59the same. It's the elements that you add
- 14:08:01to it that brings it to life and makes
- 14:08:04things a little bit different. That's
- 14:08:05what keeps it a
- 14:08:06success. How many people did
- 14:08:07you have last year? Over 75,000. 75,000
- 14:08:10folks coming down to the waterfront.
- 14:08:13That's amazing. That's fantastic. So one
- 14:08:16of the things I noticed is this year
- 14:08:17we're referring to it as the event is
- 14:08:20being epic. Yes. Tell me about what's
- 14:08:23going to make this year epic. So, you
- 14:08:25know, when we were
- 14:08:25first like talking about
- 14:08:27themes and stuff, everybody knows it is
- 14:08:29America 250. Like we are celebrating 250
- 14:08:33years of our country. That's fantastic.
- 14:08:36That in itself is just monumental.
- 14:08:38So I'm like, well, what makes us
- 14:08:41different? Like what's
- 14:08:42going to make us different?
- 14:08:43So in our planning phases, I was able to
- 14:08:49come up with something new that the
- 14:08:53city's never done. And we're always so
- 14:08:55lucky to have the support that we do
- 14:08:57that, you know, that supports our crazy
- 14:08:59ideas. But what makes it epic outside of
- 14:09:02everyone coming down is this year for the
- 14:09:05first time ever, we are shooting the
- 14:09:08fireworks from two barges. Wow. So that's
- 14:09:13big in a big way. But we are coupling it
- 14:09:16with a laser show. So lasers on top of
- 14:09:20the fireworks. Right. So everybody keeps,
- 14:09:22you know, always talking about drones.
- 14:09:24Why don't you do a
- 14:09:24drone show? And, you know,
- 14:09:27we did our research and I've watched a
- 14:09:29lot of drone shows and what people don't
- 14:09:31realize is our firework reach is huge.
- 14:09:36Palm Beach supports our event. And, you
- 14:09:40know, our viewing area just downtown goes
- 14:09:44from Lakeview to Banyan where people are
- 14:09:47along the seawall and drone shows are
- 14:09:50very forward facing.
- 14:09:53So if you're on the back
- 14:09:54side of a drone show, you are
- 14:09:55like, what is happening there?
- 14:09:58Does it make sense? You got to be looking
- 14:09:59at it from a certain angle.
- 14:10:00So like we talked through all that and
- 14:10:02it's, you know, I
- 14:10:03talked to a couple different
- 14:10:04drone shows and they really couldn't make
- 14:10:06it do anything
- 14:10:07different. So I started talking
- 14:10:11with a laser company and the lasers are
- 14:10:13going to be shot from
- 14:10:15four different locations.
- 14:10:16So they will go towards Palm Beach. They
- 14:10:19will go to each bridge
- 14:10:20and they will come towards
- 14:10:22our waterfront. So while the fireworks
- 14:10:24are shooting off one
- 14:10:26bar, then the next one bar
- 14:10:28then the next, the fireworks are going
- 14:10:31off in the air and the
- 14:10:31lasers, they hit about
- 14:10:3320 feet over your head and they will just
- 14:10:36fan out in a circumference that will just
- 14:10:39be breathtaking. So, you know, that's
- 14:10:43epic in itself because
- 14:10:44we've never done it before
- 14:10:45and we're excited about it. And when
- 14:10:47we're excited about it,
- 14:10:48we talk more about it and
- 14:10:50we just do more things. But on top of
- 14:10:54that, like we're like,
- 14:10:55what else? What else can
- 14:10:56we do? So our patriotic ceremony is going
- 14:11:00to be special in the
- 14:11:01aspect that we searched
- 14:11:03high and low for something that would
- 14:11:07reach backwards, but
- 14:11:08still move us forward. And
- 14:11:10we got the swing dolls. So back in the
- 14:11:14day when morale was down
- 14:11:16for US troops, like the
- 14:11:18USO would bring in these amazing women
- 14:11:22that would dance and sing
- 14:11:24and we're doing the same.
- 14:11:26So it's modeled after that and they're
- 14:11:29going to kind of kick
- 14:11:30things off around eight o'clock
- 14:11:32and they're going to do a half an hour of
- 14:11:34that, which is going to
- 14:11:35lead us into our ceremony
- 14:11:39that night. And we're really going to
- 14:11:41talk about our roots
- 14:11:43and, you know, where we came
- 14:11:45from. There could be, you know, maybe
- 14:11:47Betsy, Betsy Ross
- 14:11:48involved and potentially Uncle
- 14:11:50Sam and, you know, George Washington
- 14:11:52might make a small
- 14:11:54appearance, but we're going to
- 14:11:55talk about our flags, where they came
- 14:11:57from, when they came,
- 14:11:59like just we're going to give
- 14:12:00you some history about our country.
- 14:12:01That's really cool that
- 14:12:02you're going to be bringing
- 14:12:04some history in and teaching folks what
- 14:12:06it's all about, why it's
- 14:12:08so special. It's not just
- 14:12:09just another day to have apple pie and
- 14:12:11watch fireworks. It's
- 14:12:12something really important
- 14:12:13for us. And on top of that, you're also
- 14:12:15paying tribute to, I
- 14:12:17think something that has not
- 14:12:19been really focused on is the use of the
- 14:12:23USO of entertaining
- 14:12:25those folks who are serving
- 14:12:27us in foreign countries during times of
- 14:12:30war. They played an
- 14:12:31important part that, you know,
- 14:12:33it's great to see a nod given to that
- 14:12:36particular group. Now
- 14:12:39you've mentioned, you know, I'm
- 14:12:40going to go back and talk a little bit
- 14:12:42more about the
- 14:12:42fireworks, because they'll sound
- 14:12:43awesome. But what I'm really interested
- 14:12:47in is that you're
- 14:12:47describing multiple venues
- 14:12:50happening. Do you have just one stage?
- 14:12:52How many stages do we have?
- 14:12:53Oh, Jerry, we don't do just one stage. We
- 14:12:56have three stages of
- 14:12:57entertainment, which is
- 14:12:58what's kind of fun, because there really
- 14:13:00is something for
- 14:13:01everyone. So the New Day USA
- 14:13:03stage is where you can see the swing
- 14:13:06dolls got a groove and,
- 14:13:09you know, the ceremony we
- 14:13:11were talking about. And that's all taking
- 14:13:13place right in the
- 14:13:13Great Lawn. But then if
- 14:13:15you move down the road a little bit and
- 14:13:16you go to the Meijer,
- 14:13:18the supervisor of election
- 14:13:19stage has a DJ that entertains the kids
- 14:13:23area. And for us,
- 14:13:25that's so spectacular because
- 14:13:29the kids get to play all day. It's really
- 14:13:34amazing to watch the
- 14:13:35parents just, they find
- 14:13:37a spot, they sit down and their kids can
- 14:13:39play. Or the parents are
- 14:13:41playing with the kids and
- 14:13:43there's games, there's bounce houses,
- 14:13:45there's face painters.
- 14:13:48And it's just really neat.
- 14:13:51You're describing how there are things
- 14:13:54happening over a long
- 14:13:55stretch of time, which brings
- 14:13:57me to an important question because
- 14:13:58people go, "Oh, okay,
- 14:13:59well, it's an hour before the
- 14:14:01fireworks. Let's go downtown." No, that's
- 14:14:03not what we're talking about.
- 14:14:04Come on down and stay.
- 14:14:05Yeah, there's all sorts of stuff going
- 14:14:07on. As sort of a guide
- 14:14:10to someone who hasn't been
- 14:14:11there before, what's really a good time
- 14:14:13to show up and start
- 14:14:14really enjoying the things
- 14:14:15that are going on?
- 14:14:16So the event kicks off at five. You know,
- 14:14:20down in Post Park, we
- 14:14:22have the Informa stage,
- 14:14:24which is our country kickback. So when I
- 14:14:27say there's really
- 14:14:27something for everyone,
- 14:14:29we teach line dance lessons. There's a
- 14:14:31mechanical bowl. So it is
- 14:14:32nonstop entertainment down
- 14:14:34there. And we even give you a tent to
- 14:14:36dance under so you're not so warm.
- 14:14:38But we've got so much going on that get
- 14:14:43there at five, enjoy it.
- 14:14:44Is there food?
- 14:14:45Oh, yes. A ton of food.
- 14:14:48Lots of beverages. We even have a sponsor
- 14:14:50coming in this year
- 14:14:51that's doing a chill station.
- 14:14:53So we know that it's warm. And so we're
- 14:14:55giving people places to
- 14:14:57reprieve with air, water,
- 14:14:59and cooling devices, which is really kind
- 14:15:02of a unique thing. But
- 14:15:04the breeze that comes
- 14:15:05off the intercoastal is
- 14:15:06pretty spectacular too.
- 14:15:08Yeah. I mean, the potential for it being
- 14:15:11a hot day is
- 14:15:12obviously there, but with just
- 14:15:13a little bit of a breeze, it's in that
- 14:15:16water. It makes for a
- 14:15:17wonderful afternoon, early
- 14:15:19evening.
- 14:15:19Absolutely. And the view.
- 14:15:22Yeah. Yeah. The view. And what you've
- 14:15:24described about the twin
- 14:15:25barges doing the fireworks
- 14:15:27on top of lasers, like cutting through
- 14:15:30the fireworks smoke and
- 14:15:31doing amazing. I can't
- 14:15:33wait to see that.
- 14:15:34Me either. I'm so excited about it.
- 14:15:38That's fun.
- 14:15:39Yeah. When we get to be excited about it,
- 14:15:41it just, I think, makes things better.
- 14:15:43Now, there's also going to be
- 14:15:44a 5K in the middle of all this.
- 14:15:46Yeah. Why don't we sprinkle a little bit
- 14:15:48more in? But Bill Bone
- 14:15:50has been a part of this
- 14:15:51for several years now. And he does the
- 14:15:55Bill Bone 5K. That kicks
- 14:15:56off at, well, they start
- 14:15:57running at seven o'clock and that goes to
- 14:16:00help wounded warriors.
- 14:16:01So it really is a full
- 14:16:04circle event in the aspect of we
- 14:16:07celebrate our past, our
- 14:16:09present, and our future. And
- 14:16:13we're honoring charities. We've got
- 14:16:15amazing sponsors this
- 14:16:16year. The fireworks and the
- 14:16:18fireworks and laser show is brought to us
- 14:16:20by Florida Crystals and that's their own
- 14:16:22backyard for them. So that's huge. And
- 14:16:26they're so excited to be a
- 14:16:27part of it this year. But
- 14:16:29it really is a great event to be. And
- 14:16:32it's, you know, if
- 14:16:35you're looking for something
- 14:16:36to do and you're not quite sure, we try
- 14:16:38to make it as easy as
- 14:16:39possible for you. There's
- 14:16:41plenty of places to park. It's listed on
- 14:16:44our website. So if
- 14:16:45people aren't sure. And
- 14:16:47we also bring the music back after the
- 14:16:48fireworks. So if you're not
- 14:16:50wanting to hurry up and rush
- 14:16:51out, just to give yourself a little bit
- 14:16:53more time. Let the
- 14:16:55crowd spread out. We do put
- 14:16:57music back on on two stages. So, you
- 14:16:59know, it gives you a
- 14:17:00little buffer for another half
- 14:17:01an hour before the event ends. You have
- 14:17:04designed something that
- 14:17:05really is a viewer event. You
- 14:17:10have taken care of. The possibility for
- 14:17:13just a wonderful,
- 14:17:14wonderful time is top flight.
- 14:17:16You've got food. You've got cooling
- 14:17:19stations. You've really
- 14:17:20thought of everything to make
- 14:17:21it a really great event for residents. We
- 14:17:24try. You know, our
- 14:17:26team works hard. We have
- 14:17:27a committee that focuses on this. And
- 14:17:30like I said, it truly is
- 14:17:32a team planning effort.
- 14:17:35So we're very lucky to
- 14:17:37have the support that we have.
- 14:17:39So while people are planning out their
- 14:17:404th of July, deciding
- 14:17:42whether they're going to
- 14:17:42have hot dogs or hamburgers or bowls or
- 14:17:47whatever their heart
- 14:17:48desires at that particular moment,
- 14:17:50they should be planning on making an
- 14:17:52effort to come on down to
- 14:17:53check out 4th on Flagler.
- 14:17:55It is truly going to be epic this year.
- 14:17:57It is going to be epic. And I look at it
- 14:18:00this way. Leave the
- 14:18:01planning to us. Is everything
- 14:18:02else at home? Don't, you know, and I
- 14:18:04always say, definitely
- 14:18:05leave the fireworks to us.
- 14:18:07Come on down. You don't have to worry
- 14:18:08about a cooler. No
- 14:18:10backpacks. Just come on down.
- 14:18:12Enjoy the view and have some fun.
- 14:18:15And one of the things that we want to
- 14:18:16make sure people are
- 14:18:17aware of is to find out more
- 14:18:19information. You can go to the city
- 14:18:21website at wpb.org front
- 14:18:24slash 4th. 4th. So go on down and
- 14:18:30check it. You guys are amazing. You guys
- 14:18:31put on a show like no other
- 14:18:33every year and it just gets
- 14:18:35bigger and bigger every year. Kudos to
- 14:18:37your team. And we can't
- 14:18:38wait to get down there.
