- 0:00What's up everyone, Welcome back to the pod.
- 0:03This is Friendsley and I hope you are having a great day so
- 0:07far. Today we're continuing in
- 0:09Matthew 25, looking at verses 31 through 46, where we see Jesus
- 0:15describing his return as a king, but ultimately as the judge.
- 0:21And before I read, I just want to say, at least for me,
- 0:25sometimes I can get kind of in a daze as I'm reading Scripture
- 0:29and it can become passive. But I really just want us to
- 0:35engage with it today, to be active as we read these verses
- 0:40and realize that Jesus is describing a future reality.
- 0:44This is not just imagery meant to make us feel something.
- 0:48It's not fiction. This is something that will
- 0:52happen. Every nation, every heart will
- 0:56be before the King of Kings one day.
- 0:59So I also want to say Jesus is showing us something really
- 1:04important that the gospel invite.
- 1:07It's for all people, but not everyone belongs to Him.
- 1:12So with that, let's go ahead and start in verse 31.
- 1:17When the Son of Man comes in His glory and all the angels with
- 1:21him, He will sit on His glorious throne.
- 1:25All the nations will be gathered before Him, and He will separate
- 1:28the people one from another. As a shepherd separates the
- 1:32sheep from the goats, He will put the sheep on his right and
- 1:36the goats on his left. Then the king will say to those
- 1:40on his right, Come, you who are blessed by my Father, take your
- 1:45inheritance, the Kingdom prepared for you since the
- 1:48creation of the world. For I was hungry, and you gave
- 1:52me something to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me
- 1:55something to drink. I was a stranger and you invited
- 1:59me in. I needed clothes and you clothed
- 2:02me. I was sick and you looked after
- 2:04me. I was in prison and you came to
- 2:07visit me. Then the righteous will answer
- 2:10him. Lord, when did we see you hungry
- 2:13and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?
- 2:17When did we see you as stranger and invite you in, or needing
- 2:20clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in
- 2:24prison and go to visit you? The King will reply, Truly I
- 2:29tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these
- 2:32brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.
- 2:36Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you who
- 2:40are cursed into the eternal fire, prepared for the devil and
- 2:44his angels. For I was hungry, and you gave
- 2:47me nothing to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me
- 2:51nothing to drink. I was a stranger and you did not
- 2:54invite me in. I needed clothes and you did not
- 2:57clothe me. I was sick and in prison, and
- 3:01you did not look after me. They also will answer, Lord,
- 3:05when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing
- 3:09clothes or sick or in prison and did not help you?
- 3:14He will reply truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one
- 3:19of the least of these, you did not do for me.
- 3:23Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the
- 3:27righteous to eternal life. OK, so let's jump right into my
- 3:34takeaways because the Lord taught me a lot in this quiet
- 3:37time. First of all, I just want us to
- 3:40notice that the gospel is for everyone.
- 3:45We see that all will stand before Jesus, not divided by
- 3:50people, groups, or background. It doesn't matter where you come
- 3:54from or what your status is. But this passage does show a
- 3:59separation on Judgement Day between authentic true believers
- 4:04of Jesus versus non believers or even false believers.
- 4:10So not everyone who claims Jesus actually belongs to him.
- 4:16That distinction matters. I'm going to go more into it
- 4:19later, but I did do some research on sheep and goats
- 4:25because I just wanted to get some more context and it really
- 4:30brought this passage to life in such a cool way.
- 4:33A little side note, I went to Wales last March and just
- 4:38picture Psalm 23 in real life. The Lord is my shepherd I shall
- 4:43not want. And there's rolling pastures of
- 4:46sheep just everywhere, real shepherds right in front of me.
- 4:50And so learning all these things as I nerded out it made Jesus
- 4:55illustration even richer. So here's some things that I
- 5:00found interesting. Sheep and goats.
- 5:03They often grace together in the same field and from afar they
- 5:08can look similar. But when it's time to shear the
- 5:11sheep, there's a specific season when these goats and sheep are
- 5:17separated. And the shepherd, he can easily
- 5:21tell the difference between the two even from a distance.
- 5:25But here's the thing, they grow and eat together, but they do
- 5:30not belong together forever. And I think that's what Jesus is
- 5:34underlining here, that the separation is not random, it's
- 5:38actually relational. So if we were to label sheep and
- 5:44goats with personalities, if you want to view it like that, it
- 5:48was easier for me. But you can view sheep as more
- 5:52gentle. They are easily guided.
- 5:55They're dependent on their shepherd.
- 5:57They follow his voice. We see in John 1027, Jesus says,
- 6:02my sheep hear my voice and I know them and they follow me.
- 6:07They also move with their flock and unity.
- 6:10So there's harmony and peace. The sheep represents submission,
- 6:15obedience, and ultimately dependence on their shepherd.
- 6:20Now goats, OK, kind of just think of the reverse.
- 6:23They tend to be stubborn. They're very independent, they
- 6:28wander away and they're harder to manage.
- 6:31So they represent selfishness, rebellion, and really just sin.
- 6:38So they're separated because of their relationship to the
- 6:42shepherd. Now the sheep reflect the heart
- 6:45of the Good Shepherd. We see Jesus call himself the
- 6:48Good Shepherd, but the the goats, they do not.
- 6:52The sheep belong to Him and allow themselves to be LED.
- 6:56They live submitted to their leader and to their Lord.
- 7:00Now also true commitment. It is always revealed.
- 7:07You can only pretend for so long.
- 7:10Jesus reminds us in Luke 817. Nothing is hidden that will not
- 7:15be made manifest, that will not be clear.
- 7:18So on judgement day, truth comes out.
- 7:21Motives are exposed, whether they are pure or impure, and
- 7:26allegiances are clear. So that's what I found
- 7:29fascinating here is that both groups are surprised because we
- 7:33see the righteous. They didn't even realize that
- 7:36they were serving Jesus when they served others.
- 7:39The unrighteous, they say they would have if they had known it
- 7:43was him. Now that tells us everything
- 7:46about motives because the goats, they were so caught up in their
- 7:51appearance and the who's who that they were in it for the
- 7:55external benefits. But y'all first John 48 reminds
- 8:00us love flows naturally from those who truly know God.
- 8:06If you know him, you love him and you love his people because
- 8:09God is love Now also judgement. We see that it brings reality.
- 8:17It's not just about Jesus figuring out who belongs to Him,
- 8:20because as our Shepherd, He knows who belongs to him.
- 8:24He already knows His sheep. But Judgement Day is about
- 8:28establishing justice. It's about rewarding the
- 8:32righteous and unveiling the truth and making it public.
- 8:37If God made no distinction between good and evil, what is
- 8:43right and what is wrong? Obedience or sin, there would be
- 8:48no significant meaning behind justice.
- 8:52And y'all, he is a just God. He is holy.
- 8:56That means he has to be just. He has to live in truth.
- 9:00It's in his heart to establish this justice.
- 9:06So I want to emphasize allegiance matters in every
- 9:12single detail of your life. I know some choices, they may
- 9:17seem small and feel insignificant in the moment,
- 9:21especially when evil and sin is literally celebrated in the
- 9:26world today. We live in a world that just
- 9:30glamorizes it, but I just want to say it will not last.
- 9:35Jesus calls us to live like we belong to him.
- 9:39We see James too, that James is telling us faith without works
- 9:45is dead. We are not saved by works.
- 9:47I went into this in a few episodes ago, but we highlighted
- 9:53that works are the evidence of what we believe and how we truly
- 9:57view God. And notice something really
- 10:00powerful in this story. These acts of service, they
- 10:04don't require wealth or privilege or a certain amount of
- 10:08money. They just require a willing
- 10:11heart. They take effort, yes, but it
- 10:14all comes down to obedience. Jesus when he is commissioning
- 10:19the 12 disciples, He tells them freely, You have received so
- 10:24freely give Matthew Tenay loving and serving others.
- 10:28It freely glorifies God because it points back to our love for
- 10:33Him and that kind of life, that kind of love, it stands out in a
- 10:39consumer based, self focused culture today.
- 10:43That's what it means to be sanctified, y'all?
- 10:45To be set apart for holy use. Now I want to just tell you all
- 10:51about a prayer that I pray almost every day because I think
- 10:55it's something all of us can be praying.
- 10:58Lord, give me eyes to see the overlooked and the undervalued
- 11:03in the world today. Show me someone today who needs
- 11:07encouragement, who needs a smile or just a quick moment of
- 11:12prayer. Y'all.
- 11:14God loves to answer that prayer because he wants to use his
- 11:18people in the world. He uses those who are willing
- 11:22and those who are obedient. And I have stories upon stories
- 11:25of just the ways that I have felt the Lord through his Spirit
- 11:30prompts me to go up to someone and they're like, you don't even
- 11:34realize that's exactly what I needed to hear and see.
- 11:37That is nothing in me that could have known that that was only
- 11:40the Lord. So also whenever I was reading
- 11:44this passage, God brought me to the verse wisdom is proved right
- 11:49by her deeds. Matthew 1119 and it ties
- 11:54perfectly into everything that Jesus has been teaching the wise
- 11:58servant. A few passages ago, he went to
- 12:01work because he wanted to make his master proud and he knew
- 12:06that he was returning. The wise maidens, they stored up
- 12:11their oil to be ready for their bridegroom.
- 12:14Y'all, the wise live like Jesus is coming back.
- 12:19So as we reflect, just remember that these sheep, they were
- 12:24blessed because they belonged to their shepherd and also the
- 12:29timing, the Kingdom was prepared before they did anything.
- 12:34So we don't perform for blessing.
- 12:37We live from belonging, we live from relationship with Jesus.
- 12:43So just ask yourself really quick, do you blend into the
- 12:47world or do you live set apart? Do you give your time or your
- 12:53money and energy to be seen by others?
- 12:56Or do you structure your life above reproach, consistently
- 13:00reflecting Jesus? Y'all, we need to be more
- 13:05attentive to the Spirit, let's be more sensitive to His leading
- 13:10and to others needs around us and just be obedient in the
- 13:15ordinary because it's those moments that make the biggest
- 13:19difference and grow our faith in the Lord and the way that He can
- 13:24lead us to other people. So let's go ahead and closeout
- 13:28in prayer. Lord Jesus, thank you for being
- 13:34our King, our Shepherd and our judge who is coming back to make
- 13:40things right to reward the righteous.
- 13:45Lord, we want to confidently belong to you.
- 13:49It's not just a name but in how we live.
- 13:52So would you give us hearts that reflect yours?
- 13:55Would you give us eyes to see people the way that you see
- 13:58them? God lives that quietly but
- 14:02boldly point to you. Teach us to live ready and full
- 14:08of love until the day that you return and we see you in all of
- 14:12your glory, seated on your glorious throne.
- 14:17We pray this on your name, Father, Amen.
- 14:21OK, well pray that y'all have a wonderful rest of your day and
- 14:25that the Lord will continue speaking to each of y'all as you
- 14:28listen and pray and talk with Him.
- 14:31I'll see you on the next episode.
