- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:14It's the 18th of March, which is Global Recycling Day.
- 0:19That's right. This is the day all around the
- 0:21world when people think how can I reduce my waste?
- 0:25For example, in the Connery household, we drink a lot of
- 0:27tea. When I say a lot of tea, at
- 0:29least 15 tea bags. We're getting disposed of every
- 0:32day. And I thought there has to be a
- 0:33better way. And we worked out we can
- 0:35actually buy tea in these enormous 2K bags which will last
- 0:40us for months. And now we make a pot of tea
- 0:44with loose leaf tea. And then I Chuck out those tea
- 0:47leaves onto the grass. And that's where we play
- 0:50cricket. And I don't know whether that
- 0:51makes it a more British or maybe more Indian or maybe more Sri
- 0:55Lankan. So many parts of the world, so
- 0:57many cricketing nations have ownership over tea.
- 1:01I'll have to ponder that, what that makes our cricket pitch.
- 1:03But anyway, what is something that you could do?
- 1:06And I guess for me, what is one more thing that I can do today
- 1:10to try and reduce my footprint in this world so that we can
- 1:13pass on a functioning planet to our grandkids?
- 1:17There you have it friends, Global Recycling day.
- 1:19What can we do to make a difference, even if it's only
- 1:23one tea bag at a time and talking about make a difference.
- 1:26Wow. Today we will continue reading
- 1:29the story of Jesus life as he certainly more than any other
- 1:34human on the face of our planet, made a difference to all of us.
- 1:38And so today we're going to continue reading through the
- 1:41Gospel of Mark, hearing about Jesus teaching Jesus actions,
- 1:45Jesus miracles. Incredible.
- 1:48So strap yourselves in friends, as we read together Mark chapter
- 1:525. So they arrived at the other
- 2:04side of the lake, in the region of the Garrucines.
- 2:08When Jesus climbed out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil
- 2:12spirit came out of the tombs to meet him.
- 2:14This man lived in the burial caves and could no longer be
- 2:17restrained even with a chain. Whenever he was put into chains
- 2:21and shackles, as he often was, he snapped the chains from his
- 2:25wrists and smashed the shackles. No one was strong enough to
- 2:29subdue him. Day and night he wandered among
- 2:33the burial caves and in the hills, howling and cutting
- 2:37himself with sharp stones. When Jesus was still some
- 2:41distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low
- 2:46before him. With a shriek he screamed.
- 2:49Why are you interfering with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God,
- 2:54in the name of God, I beg you, don't torture me.
- 2:58For Jesus had already said to the Spirit, Come out of the man,
- 3:01you evil spirit. Then Jesus demanded, What is
- 3:06your name? And he replied, My name is
- 3:09legion, because there are many of us inside this man.
- 3:14Then the evil spirit begged him again and again not to send them
- 3:18to some distant place. There happened to be a large
- 3:21herd of pigs feeding on the hillside nearby.
- 3:24Send us into those pigs, the Spirit begged.
- 3:27Let us enter them. So Jesus gave them permission.
- 3:31The evil spirits came out of the man and entered the pigs, and in
- 3:34the entire herd of about 2000 pigs plunged down the steep
- 3:39hillside into the lake and drowned in the water.
- 3:44The herdsmen fled to the nearby town and the surrounding
- 3:47countryside, spreading the news as they ran.
- 3:50People rushed out to see what had happened.
- 3:52A crowd soon gathered around Jesus and I saw the man who had
- 3:56been possessed by the legion of demons.
- 3:59He was sitting there fully clothed and perfectly sane, and
- 4:03they were all afraid. Then those who had seen what had
- 4:07happened told the others about the demon possessed man and the
- 4:09pigs, and the crowd began pleading with Jesus to go away
- 4:13and leave them alone. As Jesus was getting into the
- 4:17boat, the man who had been demon possessed begged to go with him,
- 4:21but Jesus said no. Go home to your family and tell
- 4:25them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he
- 4:29has been. So the man started off to visit
- 4:32the 10 towns of that region and began to proclaim the great
- 4:36things Jesus had done for him and everyone was amazed at what
- 4:40he told them. Jesus got into the boat again
- 4:44and went back to the other side of the lake, where a large crowd
- 4:48gathered around him on the shore.
- 4:50Then a leader of the local synagogue, whose name was
- 4:53Jairus, arrived, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet,
- 4:57pleading fervently with him. My little daughter is dying, he
- 5:02said. Please come and lay your hands
- 5:05on her. Heal her so she can live.
- 5:10Jesus went with him, and all the people followed, crowding around
- 5:13him. A woman in the crowd had
- 5:15suffered for 12 years with constant bleeding.
- 5:19She had suffered a great deal from many doctors, and over the
- 5:22years she had spent everything she had to pay them.
- 5:26But she had gotten no better. In fact, she had gotten worse.
- 5:30She had heard about Jesus. So she came up behind him
- 5:33through the crowd and touched his robe.
- 5:36For she thought to herself, if I can just touch his robe, I will
- 5:40be healed. Immediately the bleeding stopped
- 5:44and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her
- 5:47terrible condition. Jesus realised at once that
- 5:51healing power had gone out from him.
- 5:53So he turned around in the crowd and asked, Who touched my robe?
- 5:57His disciples said to him, Look at this crowd pressing against
- 6:01you. How can you ask who touched me?
- 6:04But he kept on looking around to see who had done it.
- 6:08Then the frightened woman, trembling at the realisation of
- 6:11what had happened to her, came and fell to her knees in front
- 6:14of him and told him what she had done.
- 6:17And he said to her daughter, Your faith has made you well.
- 6:22Go in peace, your suffering is over.
- 6:27While he was still speaking to her, messengers arrived from the
- 6:30House of Gyrus, the leader of the synagogue.
- 6:33They told him, your daughter is dead, there's no use troubling
- 6:37the teacher now. But Jesus overheard them and
- 6:40said to Gyrus, Don't be afraid, just have faith.
- 6:45Then Jesus stopped the crowd and wouldn't let anyone go with him
- 6:48except Peter, James and John, the brother of James.
- 6:53When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw
- 6:56much commotion and weeping and wailing.
- 6:59He went inside and asked why all this commotion and weeping.
- 7:03The child isn't dead, she's only asleep.
- 7:07The crowd laughed at him, but he made them all leave and he took
- 7:11the girl's father and mother and his three disciples into the
- 7:14room where the girl was lying holding her hand.
- 7:18He said to her, Talitha Kum, which means little girl, get up.
- 7:25And the girl who was 12 years old immediately stood up and
- 7:29walked around. They were overwhelmed and
- 7:33totally amazed. Jesus gave them strict orders
- 7:37not to tell anyone what had happened, and then he told them
- 7:41to give her something to eat. Well Jesus, you are officially
- 7:54unbelievable. Not even death nor the powers of
- 7:57evil and darkness can do anything but flee in your
- 8:01presence. You are Lord over all.
- 8:05You are supreme over all creation, everything in this
- 8:09universe and beyond in the realm of life and death.
- 8:18So we worship you and we say that you are the most High
- 8:23Creator, the one who always was, the one who is, and the one who
- 8:28always will be. And we just fall at your feet in
- 8:32worship of you and the magnitude of all that you are.
- 8:37You are remarkable, Jesus, and we just praise you.
- 8:43Thank you for loving us. Thank you for drawing near to
- 8:46us. And as we read this gospel, we
- 8:49see these stories of you drawing near to people taking an
- 8:55interest in the small things of their lives to show that your
- 8:57love is not just a global love, but it's a love intimate for
- 9:02each one of us. So we thank you and we pray all
- 9:06of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
