- 1:07Speaker 1: of this podcast delivered right to your phone, tablet, or
- 1:10Speaker 1: computer by subscribing wherever you get your podcasts. It's the
- 1:15Speaker 1: greatest thing since learning about the Dexter Lawrence trade. It
- 1:20Speaker 1: sounds like many of us had a similar experience on
- 1:24Speaker 1: Saturday night. We heard about the Dexter Lawrence trade on
- 1:27Speaker 1: social media or from a friend, and then scrambled to
- 1:31Speaker 1: make sure it was true. I was at the FC
- 1:34Speaker 1: Cincinnati match. At halftime, I got a call from my son,
- 1:38Speaker 1: who's a college student at the University of Colorado. When
- 1:41Speaker 1: I answered, he said, Dad, can you believe it?
- 1:45Speaker 2: What a move?
- 1:46Speaker 1: I said, Sam, I have no idea what you're talking about.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Then he said, this is awesome. I get to break
- 1:55Speaker 1: the news to you. For a change, the Bengals traded
- 1:59Speaker 1: for Dexter Laurence. I said, Sam, I've got to hang
- 2:03Speaker 1: up and call you back. I figured he might have
- 2:06Speaker 1: fallen for a fake social media post from an account
- 2:09Speaker 1: like Alan Schefter or Ian Rapapork. So I texted somebody
- 2:15Speaker 1: in the know, and sure enough, it was real, real
- 2:19Speaker 1: and spectacular. So just how good is Dexter Lawrence? If
- 2:25Speaker 1: anybody should know, it's the guys who have tried to
- 2:28Speaker 1: block him. Here are Amarius Mems, Orlando Brown Junior, and
- 2:33Speaker 1: Ted Karras. How do offensive lineman describe him.
- 2:38Speaker 2: A nightmare, a nightmare town to block him. Like I said, man,
- 2:41Speaker 2: it's just that I don't think there's any one guy
- 2:43Speaker 2: that can literally stop though. Man. Like I've watched a
- 2:45Speaker 2: lot of film on him. Last year, well my rookie
- 2:47Speaker 2: or we played him. I was like our game plan
- 2:49Speaker 2: was simming around him. So I'm like, I feel like
- 2:51Speaker 2: it takes a whole line to get on him. So
- 2:53Speaker 2: you gotta understand, like this is a once a lifetime player,
- 2:55Speaker 2: Like this guy is a game changer, Like not only
- 2:58Speaker 2: just like I say, on the defense, but he can
- 2:59Speaker 2: change the whole team dynamic. Everybody's happy about it. Everybody
- 3:02Speaker 2: I'll talk to us happy about it. We're excited to
- 3:04Speaker 2: have him. So we're gonna welcome welcome inme with open
- 3:07Speaker 2: arms and you know, let's go win. Man.
- 3:09Speaker 1: Oh my god, what's it like to block him?
- 3:11Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 3:12Speaker 3: No, he's special, man. He's he's very strong at the
- 3:14Speaker 3: point of contact in the run game, in the past game,
- 3:17Speaker 3: he's creates his own set of issues. I really don't
- 3:19Speaker 3: see him too much, but he's strong as hell, man,
- 3:22Speaker 3: and he's got a very unique frame with his long
- 3:24Speaker 3: arms and big chests. So it creates his own set
- 3:28Speaker 3: of issues.
- 3:28Speaker 1: How unique is that size and strength in the middle
- 3:31Speaker 1: of the defense?
- 3:32Speaker 3: Really unique, man, you know, just honestly, the nose tackle
- 3:35Speaker 3: is one of the more appreciated positions in football and
- 3:38Speaker 3: has been for a long time. But to be honest,
- 3:39Speaker 3: it's hard to be a great football team without one,
- 3:41Speaker 3: and we got the best.
- 3:43Speaker 1: So she was describe what it's like to put your
- 3:47Speaker 1: hands on that guy.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Well, he's one of those guys that's so big and
- 3:52Speaker 4: strong and fast. You know, you can you can feel
- 3:54Speaker 4: your arms collapse into you. Uh what we what do
- 3:57Speaker 4: we go to New York two years ago to play them?
- 3:59Speaker 4: I mean when that schedule comes out and you got
- 4:01Speaker 4: Dexter Lawrence as a center, you know you're circling that
- 4:04Speaker 4: from May onwards. So you know, he's a He's a big, big,
- 4:08Speaker 4: scary player, and I think we really we have a
- 4:11Speaker 4: we have a very serious team, very excited for twenty
- 4:14Speaker 4: twenty six.
- 4:15Speaker 1: I suspect nobody is more excited than Bengals defensive coordinator
- 4:20Speaker 1: Al Bolden.
- 4:21Speaker 5: He's such a positive person. That's the you know when
- 4:24Speaker 5: you meet him, he's very engaging. I think he's an
- 4:29Speaker 5: uplifter I think he's a mentor. He sees himself that
- 4:32Speaker 5: way as a leader. So just in a short time
- 4:35Speaker 5: that I've been exposed to him, it's really impressive. So
- 4:39Speaker 5: he makes everybody around him better. I think the way
- 4:43Speaker 5: he plays the game, he's so technically sound, just just
- 4:47Speaker 5: watching reels of him here the last couple of days.
- 4:52Speaker 5: The way he uses his hands, the way he finishes
- 4:54Speaker 5: on the ball carrier, the pocket push that he gets
- 4:56Speaker 5: inside is at an elite level. So excited to build
- 5:01Speaker 5: on that. And obviously, you know, Jerry and Mike Moon
- 5:05Speaker 5: will do a great job teaching our techniques. But all
- 5:09Speaker 5: the standards that he set will be what guys chase
- 5:14Speaker 5: and I think that the standard is the most important thing,
- 5:18Speaker 5: not the expectation, the standard. And you could see it
- 5:21Speaker 5: right on the tape what the standard is, which is awesome. Look,
- 5:25Speaker 5: we're a different team this morning than we were yesterday
- 5:29Speaker 5: at you know, six o'clock or whatever. So I don't
- 5:32Speaker 5: know if I've been around too many humans that big
- 5:37Speaker 5: like he is a big human. You know, we had
- 5:40Speaker 5: cap space and everybody challenged us to use it, and
- 5:44Speaker 5: boy have we used it. And so yeah, so that's
- 5:46Speaker 5: exciting and just like the players motivate coaches to go
- 5:51Speaker 5: to work. Upstairs has motivated us all to be the
- 5:56Speaker 5: best version of ourselves. And yeah, that's really you know,
- 6:01Speaker 5: it's a great day to wake up and be a
- 6:03Speaker 5: Cincinnati Bengler.
- 6:04Speaker 1: This offseason, some people question whether the Bengals were really
- 6:08Speaker 1: all in and willing to make bold moves to get
- 6:11Speaker 1: back to being a Super Bowl contender. Well, if this
- 6:14Speaker 1: move isn't all in, I don't know what is. Here's
- 6:18Speaker 1: Zach Taylor.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Brilliant.
- 6:19Speaker 6: Credit upstairs to ownership in the front office for getting
- 6:22Speaker 6: this done. This is not an easy thing to forego
- 6:25Speaker 6: the tenth pick in the draft, but for a player
- 6:27Speaker 6: of this caliber, we're excited that we did it. He's
- 6:31Speaker 6: excited to be here, everyone's excited to have him. Just
- 6:33Speaker 6: being around him for twenty four hours, his presence elevates everybody.
- 6:38Speaker 6: And again, a lot of credit to a lot of
- 6:40Speaker 6: people upstairs for getting this done. And as coaching staff,
- 6:44Speaker 6: we're really excited about it. He's at the top of
- 6:47Speaker 6: the position group. It's not my space to sit here
- 6:49Speaker 6: and argue who's number one. I mean, but I'd argue
- 6:52Speaker 6: for him. And so anytime you can add a guy
- 6:55Speaker 6: like that. Again, I feel like we have a lot
- 6:57Speaker 6: of really good pieces on defense right now, and he's
- 7:00Speaker 6: only going to be one of those guys that makes
- 7:01Speaker 6: everybody aroun him better, and so it's just very exciting.
- 7:06Speaker 6: You know the value of Dexter. You've seen it on
- 7:10Speaker 6: tape for the last seven years, so there's really no
- 7:13Speaker 6: question on what he's going to bring. And with any
- 7:17Speaker 6: first round pick, there's always going to be a question.
- 7:18Speaker 6: You think you know the value, but until they are
- 7:21Speaker 6: integrated in the NFL locker room and go play against
- 7:23Speaker 6: other NFL players, there's a little bit of a nuther there.
- 7:25Speaker 6: He's a known quantity for us, and I know he's
- 7:28Speaker 6: going to be an immediate presence that lifts our team
- 7:31Speaker 6: up and causes concern for other teams. And I don't
- 7:34Speaker 6: have any questions about that, and so it's pretty clear
- 7:37Speaker 6: for me to that's the right decision.
- 7:39Speaker 1: For more analysis of the blockbuster trade, here's my broadcast partner,
- 7:43Speaker 1: Dave Lapham. This will be your fifty first season with
- 7:47Speaker 1: a franchise as a player or broadcaster. Is the trade
- 7:51Speaker 1: for Dexter Lawrence the gutsiest move in franchise history?
- 7:56Speaker 7: Tell you Dan, it's got to be up there. You know,
- 7:58Speaker 7: there's no question about it. Dexter Lawrence is a proven commodity.
- 8:03Speaker 7: The Bengals defense needs help on the interior, you know,
- 8:06Speaker 7: pushing the pocket in the passing game and stuff on
- 8:09Speaker 7: the run. And Dexter Lawrence is one large human being.
- 8:12Speaker 7: Now that's a that's a big man, three hundred and
- 8:14Speaker 7: forty plus pounds, you know. And he's obviously a great player.
- 8:21Speaker 7: He's proven it eight years in the league, three Pro Bowls,
- 8:24Speaker 7: and you know that they give up the tenth pick
- 8:27Speaker 7: in the draft, that player should project to be a
- 8:29Speaker 7: pretty darn good football player, no question about it. But
- 8:32Speaker 7: I like the move. I think that you know, you've
- 8:36Speaker 7: made a move on a guy that has proven himself.
- 8:39Speaker 7: He's a proven commodity in the National Football League, and
- 8:42Speaker 7: he's been durable. The durability factor, I think is a
- 8:45Speaker 7: big deal. When you're drafting players. You just don't know
- 8:48Speaker 7: about that whatsoever.
- 8:50Speaker 1: You know, the dynamics of a locker room. What message
- 8:54Speaker 1: does it send giving up the tenth pick in the
- 8:57Speaker 1: draft to go get a guy like that.
- 8:59Speaker 7: I think everybody in the locker room is going to
- 9:01Speaker 7: know that. The Bengals management and organization things highly of
- 9:04Speaker 7: Dexter Clarence, and they should. I mean, he's a he's
- 9:07Speaker 7: a bright guy, intelligent guy. I listened to the interview
- 9:10Speaker 7: that you did with him. He communicates very very well.
- 9:15Speaker 7: He's a you know, he's got very very high football IQ,
- 9:19Speaker 7: tremendous leadership qualities. So he brings, you know, he brings
- 9:23Speaker 7: things other than just lining up and playing football. He
- 9:25Speaker 7: brings some intangibles to the table as well.
- 9:29Speaker 1: What other guys on defense benefit the most from his presence?
- 9:33Speaker 1: Is it edge rushers, is it linebackers, is it cover guys?
- 9:36Speaker 1: What do you think?
- 9:37Speaker 7: He's the guy that can lift the whole boat, you know,
- 9:39Speaker 7: I mean, he can make the entire defensive football team better.
- 9:44Speaker 7: He's going to draw double teams and sometimes triple teams.
- 9:47Speaker 7: You know, back out of the back going out of
- 9:49Speaker 7: the backfield or back staying into to help and protection
- 9:53Speaker 7: is going to be concerned about him. You know, guys
- 9:57Speaker 7: like Miles Murphy, Schamar Stewart, BJ Hill, these guys should
- 10:03Speaker 7: be just thrilled, excited, you know, to say the least
- 10:06Speaker 7: about the signing of Dexter Lawrence. He's going to make
- 10:09Speaker 7: their game, allow them to take their game to another level.
- 10:13Speaker 7: And that's all you want to do as a as
- 10:15Speaker 7: a player in the National Football League is you want
- 10:18Speaker 7: to get better every year and take your game to
- 10:20Speaker 7: the highest lew you possibly can. And Al Golden is
- 10:24Speaker 7: a guy that can coach you up and help you
- 10:26Speaker 7: get there. There's no doubt about it.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Lap one thing that is not getting enough attention, in
- 10:32Speaker 1: my opinion, is the contract extension turn. It turns the
- 10:36Speaker 1: deal into a three year, seventy million dollar contract. Essentially,
- 10:41Speaker 1: that's twenty three point three per year. Chris Jones gets
- 10:44Speaker 1: nearly thirty two, Milton Williams and Jordan Davis get twenty
- 10:48Speaker 1: six million a year. This deal makes Dexter Lawrence the
- 10:51Speaker 1: eleventh highest paid interior defensive lineman in the NFL at
- 10:55Speaker 1: the age of twenty eight. That sounds like a bargain.
- 10:59Speaker 7: I agree with you. I agree with you one hundred.
- 11:02Speaker 7: I think at the age of twenty eight, he's got
- 11:04Speaker 7: five to seven more years of unbelievably productive football. I
- 11:08Speaker 7: think he's going to be amongst the best interior defensive
- 11:12Speaker 7: lineman in the National Football League. He's going to be
- 11:13Speaker 7: a problem. You know, he's gonna he's gonna penetrate He's
- 11:16Speaker 7: gonna cause disruption. He's going to be a thorn in
- 11:19Speaker 7: the side of offensive lineman and everybody in the offensive
- 11:24Speaker 7: football team, quarterbacks, offensive coordinators, offensive line coaches. I agree
- 11:29Speaker 7: with you. I think that the Bengals did a hell
- 11:32Speaker 7: of a job. I think they put a great deal together,
- 11:36Speaker 7: and you know, I think I think both parties can
- 11:39Speaker 7: It's a win win. That's what you like to have
- 11:41Speaker 7: in any deal that's made. And Dexter Lawrence is is
- 11:46Speaker 7: gonna going to be a wealthy man by any standard,
- 11:48Speaker 7: no question about it. In the Cincinnati Bengals are thrilled
- 11:51Speaker 7: to get a very, very high performing football player on
- 11:56Speaker 7: the defensive side of it.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I have an asked lap question from a X follower
- 12:02Speaker 1: named Grant. Can you come up with a player comp
- 12:05Speaker 1: to Dexter Lawrence and who were some of the toughest
- 12:09Speaker 1: guys you had to block?
- 12:12Speaker 7: Boy, they were all tough. There's no doubt about that
- 12:15Speaker 7: a comparison. How about the number ninety seven. I think
- 12:19Speaker 7: he's a bigger person, bigger band than Geno Atkins, but
- 12:23Speaker 7: he causes the same type of problems. Geno Atkins was
- 12:27Speaker 7: a penetrator, a disruptor, a force inside that just caused
- 12:32Speaker 7: all kinds of problems for offenses to execute. He was
- 12:36Speaker 7: a thorn in the side. And Dexter Lawrence is that
- 12:39Speaker 7: type of football player and Al Golden, you know, he's
- 12:44Speaker 7: not a guy that wants to just sit at the
- 12:46Speaker 7: line of scrimmage and two get people. He wants to
- 12:49Speaker 7: make the offense flinch. He wants to make them, you know,
- 12:52Speaker 7: have to adjust to what you're doing defensively, and he
- 12:55Speaker 7: doesn't want to have to adjust defensively what you're trying
- 12:58Speaker 7: to get done against his defense football team offensively. So
- 13:02Speaker 7: Dex Lawrence is a guy that fits that bill one.
- 13:06Speaker 1: I remember you describing the challenge of trying to block
- 13:10Speaker 1: Curly Culp. Oh he was with the Oilers. Is that
- 13:13Speaker 1: a good A good comp for people to remember Curly Culp?
- 13:17Speaker 7: That is a good comp. Dan and Tim Krumrae, you know,
- 13:19Speaker 7: is a good comp. I mean Crumrie was. I played
- 13:23Speaker 7: against him, went against him every day in practice, every
- 13:25Speaker 7: single snap of practice, every drill, every one on one
- 13:29Speaker 7: pass rush drill, every team uh you know, phased it
- 13:33Speaker 7: to finish practice and there it's just those guys were
- 13:36Speaker 7: just you know, let's let's get it on let's get
- 13:38Speaker 7: down and dirty. Here, you and me, who's going to
- 13:41Speaker 7: be better. Let's let's let's knock heads. A couple of
- 13:43Speaker 7: Brahma bulls going at it, you know, in the offensive
- 13:48Speaker 7: and defensive lines. Curly Culp was a heavyweight wrestling championship
- 13:54Speaker 7: in the NCAA multiple years in a row. I think
- 13:56Speaker 7: at Arizona State and and this this guy was I
- 14:00Speaker 7: mean naturally strong. I mean he could he was like
- 14:03Speaker 7: Atlas man. He could lift the world and he had
- 14:07Speaker 7: a low center of gravity. He wasn't much more than
- 14:10Speaker 7: six feet tall, well over three hundred pounds, so he
- 14:12Speaker 7: had a little bit different presented, a little bit different
- 14:15Speaker 7: challenge than Dexter Lawrence. But Dexta Lawrence is that type
- 14:18Speaker 7: of guy, but he's more like sixty three six poorish.
- 14:21Speaker 7: So yeah, it's these these players that are special. Like
- 14:27Speaker 7: these guys, man, they they don't come along every day.
- 14:31Speaker 7: They're not in every single draft, they're not in every
- 14:33Speaker 7: single after free agents signing period. So when they're there,
- 14:37Speaker 7: you have to capitalize. And it's going to be expensive,
- 14:39Speaker 7: and the tenth pick of the draft is expensive, but
- 14:42Speaker 7: I think well worth it. I think the Bengals came
- 14:44Speaker 7: out on top of a very good deal for both
- 14:46Speaker 7: football teams. And that's all you can ask for in
- 14:49Speaker 7: a deal like this is that both teams benefit, both
- 14:52Speaker 7: teams improve, and I think that's the case in this one.
- 14:56Speaker 1: They traded for Dexter and extended his contract. They signed
- 15:00Speaker 1: Mafe to a three year, sixty million dollar deal. They
- 15:03Speaker 1: signed Brian Cook to a three year forty million dollar deal.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Jonathan Allen gets two years twenty five million. They signed
- 15:10Speaker 1: Kyle Dugger and Joe Flacco to less expensive deals. Did
- 15:14Speaker 1: the Bengals put their money where their mouth is in
- 15:17Speaker 1: free agency?
- 15:18Speaker 7: They really did, Dan, I mean, they threw some money
- 15:20Speaker 7: out there, and the Bengals said they wanted to get
- 15:24Speaker 7: this make this football team better. They have a window
- 15:27Speaker 7: to take advantage of with Joe Burrow at the quarterback position,
- 15:31Speaker 7: and they wanted to capitalize on that window. They haven't
- 15:33Speaker 7: been able to. The biggest thing they need to do
- 15:36Speaker 7: is keep Joe Burrow healthy, and I think they're going
- 15:37Speaker 7: to address the offensive line, continue to address it in
- 15:40Speaker 7: that regard with a veteran free agency and draft picks,
- 15:44Speaker 7: and make that offensive line better. But I do think
- 15:47Speaker 7: that they wanted to get better in the in the
- 15:49Speaker 7: interior that defensive football team, and that'll help Joe Burrow
- 15:53Speaker 7: in company as well. You know, offense helps defense. Good
- 15:56Speaker 7: good offense helps defense. Good defense helps offense. And I
- 16:01Speaker 7: think that's the mindset that the Bengals front office and
- 16:04Speaker 7: management we're taking in ownership, and I think it's a
- 16:08Speaker 7: sound one.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Adding Dexter, Lawrence boy A, Mafe and Jonathan Allen to
- 16:14Speaker 1: Miles Murphy, Shamar Stewart, BJ Hill and others. Has the
- 16:18Speaker 1: defensive line become a strength one of the better d
- 16:23Speaker 1: lines in the NFL.
- 16:24Speaker 7: What do you think on paper? Yeah, on paper, they
- 16:28Speaker 7: got players many, They got guys that you know, can
- 16:32Speaker 7: can get it done at the line of screamas, can
- 16:34Speaker 7: defeat one on one blocks. They got a lot of
- 16:36Speaker 7: players that you have to put more than one person
- 16:39Speaker 7: on to nullify and neutralize. So you know, Jerry Richardson's
- 16:44Speaker 7: going to have Jerry Montgomery I should say, excuse me,
- 16:47Speaker 7: Jerry Montgomery is gonna you know, I think be totally excited,
- 16:52Speaker 7: over joyed really to be able to coach these guys up.
- 16:56Speaker 7: He loves veteran defensive lineman, He's got some. He loves
- 17:00Speaker 7: the young guys that you know, are going to look
- 17:02Speaker 7: to him to help them get better. He's got those guys,
- 17:06Speaker 7: and those young guys are going to look up to
- 17:08Speaker 7: the veteran offensive lineman and you know as seek their
- 17:15Speaker 7: experience and their knowledge, tricks to the trade, things that
- 17:18Speaker 7: things that work for them in their career so far
- 17:22Speaker 7: in the National Football League. But yeah, it's I think
- 17:25Speaker 7: it's I think it's exciting. I think it's exciting what
- 17:28Speaker 7: the Bengals have done. I do think they put their
- 17:31Speaker 7: mouth where you know, money where their mouth is done,
- 17:33Speaker 7: like you described and uh and and I think it's.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Going to pay off.
- 17:36Speaker 7: I think it's going to pay off, and in in
- 17:38Speaker 7: a big way. There's going to be huge dividends there
- 17:40Speaker 7: and I can't wait to see it.
- 17:42Speaker 1: A follower named Kyle wants to know if in your
- 17:45Speaker 1: prime would you have been able to block Sexy DEXI.
- 17:49Speaker 7: I'll tell you, boy. Early in my career I had
- 17:53Speaker 7: to try to block Mike Read. This guy was the
- 17:56Speaker 7: Outland Trophy winner best offensive or defensive lineman and in
- 18:00Speaker 7: the country at Penn State, played for Joe Paterno. He
- 18:04Speaker 7: was quick as a cat. It's like, I know, I
- 18:07Speaker 7: didn't closed my damn eyes. But how did he get
- 18:09Speaker 7: from there point A to point B so damn quickly?
- 18:12Speaker 7: I mean explosive was not the term. He was so sudden.
- 18:17Speaker 7: I mean it's like, man, how can a guy be
- 18:20Speaker 7: that quick? And uh? I think he presents problems, But
- 18:26Speaker 7: Dexter Lawrence presents other problems. And he's first a guy
- 18:30Speaker 7: his size, he has extreme quickness. I mean, this guy
- 18:34Speaker 7: has something else. He's not Uh, he's not lollygagging around. Man,
- 18:38Speaker 7: you gotta gotta be on your toes. You have to
- 18:40Speaker 7: be alert. You have to realize that any single snap
- 18:45Speaker 7: could be your downfall. You have to be ready to
- 18:49Speaker 7: play at your best at the highest level you can
- 18:51Speaker 7: possibly play every single snap of a game. He is
- 18:55Speaker 7: something else I think. I think he's going to put
- 18:58Speaker 7: up big numbers.
- 18:59Speaker 2: He's going to.
- 19:01Speaker 7: Really really help this defensive football team. Every position group
- 19:05Speaker 7: is going to improve their numbers because of what Dexter
- 19:07Speaker 7: Lawrence is going to be doing up front.
- 19:09Speaker 1: All right, let's turn to the draft. I think many
- 19:13Speaker 1: of us, many of us have focused on four names
- 19:15Speaker 1: for months, David Bailey, Ruben bain Sonny Styles, and Caleb Downs.
- 19:21Speaker 1: Do you think any of those guys is going to
- 19:23Speaker 1: be available with a tenth overall pick.
- 19:26Speaker 7: I really don't, and I think that's why the Bengals,
- 19:29Speaker 7: you know, decided that, you know, all those guys are
- 19:32Speaker 7: difference makers. I mean, they'll they'll help a defense, They'll
- 19:36Speaker 7: they'll be a building block for a defensive football team
- 19:39Speaker 7: for years to come. And I think that's why the
- 19:42Speaker 7: Bengals ultimately decided to make the trade and go get
- 19:46Speaker 7: Dexter Lawrence because you know, he's worthy of the tenth
- 19:49Speaker 7: pick of the draft. He's shown, he's posted the numbers
- 19:52Speaker 7: that the tenth pick of the draft should post in
- 19:54Speaker 7: the National Football League. You know, he's lived up to expectations.
- 19:58Speaker 7: And that's not an easy thing to do, as we've
- 20:01Speaker 7: already talked about. So you know, it's very hard to
- 20:06Speaker 7: give away the tenth pick in the draft. You don't
- 20:08Speaker 7: necessarily want to have the tenth pick in this draft
- 20:10Speaker 7: every year, that's for sure, but when you get it,
- 20:13Speaker 7: you want to capitalize on it. You want to make
- 20:15Speaker 7: it count, you want to have a building block for
- 20:18Speaker 7: sure in your organization. So I think, you know, they
- 20:23Speaker 7: look at at Dexter Lawrence and what he's been able
- 20:26Speaker 7: to accomplish and feel like he has five to seven
- 20:29Speaker 7: more years to do the same thing and maybe even
- 20:32Speaker 7: put up bigger numbers than he's put up. So I
- 20:35Speaker 7: think that's the reason they made the move Dan.
- 20:37Speaker 1: Coming up later on the podcast, my one on one
- 20:40Speaker 1: conversation with a guy who was given the nickname Sexy
- 20:43Speaker 1: Dexi by a seventh grade coach, Coach Klein. But now
- 20:48Speaker 1: we turn our attention to the draft. The Bengals no
- 20:51Speaker 1: longer have the tenth pick, but they still have seven selections,
- 20:55Speaker 1: beginning with the ninth pick of the second round. Up next,
- 20:58Speaker 1: I'll give you my top five five possibilities for that spot,
- 21:02Speaker 1: along with some other guys I like for later in
- 21:05Speaker 1: the draft. But first, a reminder that the Bengals Booth
- 21:08Speaker 1: podcast is brought to you by pay Corps, proud to
- 21:10Speaker 1: be the Bengals official HR software provider by Alta Fiber
- 21:15Speaker 1: future proof fiber Internet designed elevate your home, business and
- 21:18Speaker 1: community to a new level, and by Kettering Health the
- 21:22Speaker 1: best care for the best fans. Kettering Health is the
- 21:24Speaker 1: official healthcare provider of the Bengals. We now know that
- 21:29Speaker 1: the Bengals are not going to add Caleb Downs ruben Bain,
- 21:33Speaker 1: Monsieur de Laine or any of the other guys who
- 21:36Speaker 1: have been frequently mock drafted to Cincinnati in round one.
- 21:40Speaker 1: But many of the best players in franchise history have
- 21:44Speaker 1: been second round picks, like Boomersiasin, Corey Dillon, Chad Johnson,
- 21:49Speaker 1: and Andrew Whitworth. So here are my five favorite possibilities
- 21:54Speaker 1: in order for the forty first overall pick, and these
- 21:58Speaker 1: five players are all ranked between thirty six and fifty
- 22:02Speaker 1: eight on the Consensus Big Board, making them realistic possibilities
- 22:07Speaker 1: for the Bengals in Round two. Up first, Texas tech
- 22:11Speaker 1: linebacker Jacob Rodriguez. He's average sized and not a freak athlete,
- 22:17Speaker 1: but Rodriguez was the best defensive player in the country
- 22:20Speaker 1: last year, winning the Chuck Bednerick Award, the Lombardi Award,
- 22:24Speaker 1: the Bronco Negerski Trophy, and the Buckis Award, all while
- 22:29Speaker 1: finishing fifth in the Heisman Trophy race. His stats looked
- 22:33Speaker 1: like a misprint, as Rodriguez had seven forced fumbles and
- 22:37Speaker 1: four interceptions to go with his one hundred and twenty
- 22:40Speaker 1: eight tackles. Last year, Cleveland took linebacker Carson Sweesssinger in
- 22:45Speaker 1: the second round, and he wound up being named the
- 22:48Speaker 1: NFL Defensive Player of the Year. I think Jacob Rodriguez
- 22:52Speaker 1: is this year's Carson Sweesssinger if he's not there, My
- 22:57Speaker 1: second choice is Indiana cornerback Dn Ponds. He's undersized at
- 23:02Speaker 1: five to eight point eighty, but Pons is a more
- 23:05Speaker 1: athletic version of Mike Hilton, with similar toughness but four
- 23:09Speaker 1: to three speed and a forty three and a half
- 23:12Speaker 1: inch vertical. In forty two college games, the Angelo had
- 23:15Speaker 1: thirty six pass breakups and seven interceptions. Ponds played outside
- 23:21Speaker 1: corner at Indiana, but played slot corner in high school
- 23:24Speaker 1: and would be a strong candidate to start in the
- 23:27Speaker 1: slot as a rookie for the Bengals. My third choice
- 23:31Speaker 1: for the second round is another cornerback, Chris Johnson from
- 23:34Speaker 1: San Diego State. The Athletics draft guru Dane Brugler ranks
- 23:38Speaker 1: him as the third best corner in this draft, behind
- 23:41Speaker 1: Monsieur Delaine and Jermad McCoy. Johnson was the Mountain West
- 23:46Speaker 1: defensive Player of the Year and has great size and
- 23:49Speaker 1: speed to go with his outstanding tape and Over the
- 23:53Speaker 1: last three years, Johnson has six picks and forced five fumbles.
- 23:57Speaker 1: The Bengals draft at Isaac Curtis out of Saye Diego
- 24:00Speaker 1: State and would happily pluck Chris Johnson out of the
- 24:03Speaker 1: same school. My fourth and fifth options for the forty
- 24:07Speaker 1: first overall pick are Brugler's third and fourth ranked linebackers
- 24:12Speaker 1: in this year's class, c J. Allen from Georgia and
- 24:15Speaker 1: Jake Golday from Cincinnati. We know the NFL loves defensive
- 24:19Speaker 1: players from Georgia, and Alan started as a true freshman
- 24:24Speaker 1: before blossoming into an All American as a junior last year.
- 24:28Speaker 1: Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart loves him, saying I don't know
- 24:32Speaker 1: that I've seen a kid care more about the team performance.
- 24:37Speaker 1: And maybe I'm biased from having called his college games
- 24:40Speaker 1: for two years, but you sees Jake Golday will be
- 24:43Speaker 1: a great pro. He's a freak athlete at six four
- 24:46Speaker 1: two thirty five who can run sideline to sideline, cover
- 24:50Speaker 1: and blitz. The Bengals signed a former Bearcat and free
- 24:54Speaker 1: agency and safety Brian Cook, and could draft another in
- 24:57Speaker 1: the second round in Jake Golday. Now a few other
- 25:01Speaker 1: names I like. After round two, the Bengals are in
- 25:05Speaker 1: the market for a center to back up Ted Carris
- 25:08Speaker 1: and potentially replace him as soon as next year. Brugler's
- 25:12Speaker 1: number one center in this drafts Florida's Jake Slaughter, who
- 25:16Speaker 1: I talked about extensively on last week's podcast with college
- 25:20Speaker 1: football analyst Max Chadwick. Ideally, Slaughter's there in round four
- 25:25Speaker 1: with a one hundred and tenth overall pick. He's number
- 25:29Speaker 1: one oh seven on the consensus Big Board. It would
- 25:32Speaker 1: be great to add a wide receiver at some point,
- 25:34Speaker 1: and I will once again acknowledge my bias in hoping
- 25:37Speaker 1: that the Bengals can land Cyrus Allen out of the
- 25:40Speaker 1: University of Cincinnati. While his taller college teammate Jeff Caldwell
- 25:44Speaker 1: has been getting a bunch of attention for his historic
- 25:47Speaker 1: performance at the scouting combine, I think Allan would be
- 25:51Speaker 1: the better fit with the Bengals. He's a slot receiver
- 25:54Speaker 1: with great quickness and route running ability who set a
- 25:57Speaker 1: school record with thirteen touchdown catches last year. Cyrus would
- 26:01Speaker 1: be great to land with one of the bengals two
- 26:04Speaker 1: sixth round picks, and then in the sixth door seventh round.
- 26:08Speaker 1: I've got my eyes on Houston tight end Tanner Coziel,
- 26:11Speaker 1: who spent last year with the Cougars after four years
- 26:14Speaker 1: at ball State. Coziel is six six, two fifty and
- 26:18Speaker 1: more of a receiving tight end than a blocker. He
- 26:21Speaker 1: would replace Noah Fant in the Bengals tight end room.
- 26:25Speaker 1: Cozial averaged eighty four catches over the last two years
- 26:29Speaker 1: and hauled in twenty four touchdowns in his college career.
- 26:33Speaker 1: He'd give Joe Burrow another big target at tight end. Finally,
- 26:38Speaker 1: we circle back to Dexter Lawrence. I spoke to him
- 26:41Speaker 1: one on one on Sunday, shortly after he arrived in Cincinnati.
- 26:47Speaker 1: I'm Dan Horde, and I am joined by the newest
- 26:50Speaker 1: member of the Cincinnati Bengals, a three time Pro Bowler,
- 26:53Speaker 1: a two time All Pro, one of the most dominant
- 26:56Speaker 1: players in the National Football League, Dexter Lawrence the Second
- 27:01Speaker 1: a k A sexy tax me. Bengals fans were happily
- 27:08Speaker 1: stunned when this news broke last night. What was your reaction.
- 27:12Speaker 8: It's been a long process, but once once I heard,
- 27:16Speaker 8: you know, Cincinnati was you know and in that option,
- 27:20Speaker 8: I got excited immediately. You know, uh, you know, play
- 27:23Speaker 8: with guys like Jamar and Joe and t and then
- 27:26Speaker 8: alongside my best my best my best friend BJ. So
- 27:30Speaker 8: I'm excited, man, you know, you know, God got me
- 27:33Speaker 8: through it, and right now I'm ready to let my
- 27:36Speaker 8: light shine and go win some games.
- 27:38Speaker 1: DJ Hill came with you on the jet to Cincinnati
- 27:41Speaker 1: this morning. What has he told you about being part
- 27:44Speaker 1: of this organization?
- 27:45Speaker 8: It's special, you know, the fans, the fans love it.
- 27:49Speaker 8: The fans, you know, go as the team go. You know,
- 27:51Speaker 8: I'm and there's one goal and that's and that's to
- 27:54Speaker 8: win it all. And you know that's and that's what
- 27:57Speaker 8: I'm a demand from day one. You know, I know
- 28:00Speaker 8: I have to come in and be that guy and
- 28:02Speaker 8: you know, help lead the young linebackers. So I'm excited
- 28:06Speaker 8: about that and you know, just make everybody around me better.
- 28:10Speaker 1: You've done BJ since high school, you played with them
- 28:12Speaker 1: with the New York Giants, you played with T Higgins
- 28:15Speaker 1: at Clemson. What have they said to you or how
- 28:18Speaker 1: quickly did they reach out to you? And how about
- 28:20Speaker 1: other players on the.
- 28:21Speaker 8: Team fairly quickly? Well, I was with I was with
- 28:24Speaker 8: BJ this past weekend, so that was kind of that
- 28:28Speaker 8: kind of how you know how much we are together.
- 28:31Speaker 8: But you know, te hit me up. What I'm saying
- 28:35Speaker 8: congratulations and things like that. They just say, this is
- 28:38Speaker 8: a great organization to be a part of, and you
- 28:41Speaker 8: know that it's just, you know, it's just the little
- 28:44Speaker 8: things that are missing, and you know, I want to
- 28:46Speaker 8: be that factor and.
- 28:47Speaker 3: Be a positive.
- 28:49Speaker 1: The Bengals traded a top ten draft pick to acquire you.
- 28:52Speaker 1: They immediately extended your contract. What message do you think
- 28:56Speaker 1: that sends to the entire NFL and to your new teammates.
- 28:59Speaker 8: They wanted me here and they appreciate the work that
- 29:01Speaker 8: I've put in over the last seven seasons, And you know,
- 29:05Speaker 8: I appreciate that to them, and I'm gonna do everything
- 29:07Speaker 8: i can to, you know, show them that they didn't
- 29:10Speaker 8: waste it. And I'm excited. I got a fire in
- 29:13Speaker 8: me that that I never I ain't never had this
- 29:16Speaker 8: fire before. So I'm excited and I'm excited to be
- 29:19Speaker 8: a Bengal.
- 29:20Speaker 1: He faced Joe Burrow two years ago. He had a
- 29:22Speaker 1: forty seven yard touchdown. You're fast, you work quite fast
- 29:28Speaker 1: to run him down. You did have a sack. I
- 29:30Speaker 1: believe in that.
- 29:31Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Now, but what is your impression of your new quarterback?
- 29:34Speaker 8: You know, for the longest I've been thinking he's one
- 29:37Speaker 8: of the top quarterbacks in the league. It's not detapped,
- 29:39Speaker 8: so it's gonna be fun to share a field with him,
- 29:42Speaker 8: and you know, to watch him up close to see
- 29:44Speaker 8: how he prepares and he studies and he leaves guys
- 29:47Speaker 8: and you know, get guys going. So I'm excited for that.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Part of what excites your most about being a Bengal
- 29:53Speaker 1: the uniforms.
- 29:54Speaker 8: The unitis are nice. And just to play with greatness,
- 30:01Speaker 8: you know, just to play alongside greatness and learn more
- 30:04Speaker 8: and you know, coach coach Zach, you know, just to
- 30:07Speaker 8: play for him and and be that guy.
- 30:09Speaker 1: You had tremendous individual success in New York. Unfortunately you
- 30:13Speaker 1: didn't have great team success with the Giants. Did that
- 30:16Speaker 1: weigh on you at all? And does this feel different?
- 30:19Speaker 8: I wouldn't say a way, because like I'm always optimistic,
- 30:21Speaker 8: you know, I'm always you know, how can how can
- 30:25Speaker 8: you know what's next? You know, it's a learning experience,
- 30:28Speaker 8: what's next? How can you grow from this? And you
- 30:30Speaker 8: know it's it's losing, you know, it weighs on you
- 30:33Speaker 8: a little bit, But I'm just I'm optimistic. I'm like
- 30:37Speaker 8: like Nai, you know, always thinking it's going to be
- 30:40Speaker 8: a duck. We're gonna win, We're gonna do this. But
- 30:43Speaker 8: and that's and that's you know, case of being a pro.
- 30:46Speaker 8: You gotta stay consistent and you know, if you're doing
- 30:49Speaker 8: the right things and you're taking care of your business
- 30:51Speaker 8: the right way, you know, things that fall in place.
- 30:54Speaker 8: But it's just know things. It's a process, and you know,
- 30:57Speaker 8: I'm excited to be here.
- 30:58Speaker 1: You know.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I gotta tell you.
- 31:00Speaker 8: You know, we now you know, got to taste a
- 31:02Speaker 8: few years ago, and you know, you just got to
- 31:04Speaker 8: finish the job.
- 31:05Speaker 1: This team was in the Super Bowl in twenty one,
- 31:07Speaker 1: back in the AFC Championship Game in twenty two. Do
- 31:10Speaker 1: you feel like a giant piece, giant literally at your
- 31:14Speaker 1: size that can get this team back to that level?
- 31:17Speaker 2: I do.
- 31:17Speaker 8: You know, I know it's gonna be no people gonna
- 31:20Speaker 8: say pressure, but I embraced it. You know, I bring
- 31:22Speaker 8: it in. You know, it doesn't it doesn't affect me
- 31:25Speaker 8: to pressure. I just know who I am and I'm
- 31:27Speaker 8: stay true to that and I'm gonna be the guy
- 31:30Speaker 8: to you know, help help this defense goes to miss level.
- 31:33Speaker 1: Your peers have selected you as one of the best
- 31:35Speaker 1: players in the NFL for the past several years. You
- 31:37Speaker 1: were number seventeen on the NFL Top one hundred last year.
- 31:40Speaker 1: Here are a couple of quotes from those segments that
- 31:43Speaker 1: have been on the NFL Network. Your former teammate Evan
- 31:46Speaker 1: Ingram called you a relentless monster, and former Packers running
- 31:51Speaker 1: back Jamal Williams called you a big blob of nightmare,
- 31:54Speaker 1: where blob was definitely a compliment. How do you describe
- 31:58Speaker 1: yourself and what do you think you bring to the sense.
- 32:01Speaker 8: I think I bring an attitude of dominance, and I
- 32:05Speaker 8: think I bring leadership, and I think I bring, you know,
- 32:09Speaker 8: just an understanding of how to be a pro and
- 32:12Speaker 8: how to go about your work and how to study
- 32:14Speaker 8: and how to prepare and take care of your body
- 32:16Speaker 8: and things like that. So I mean, just just like
- 32:20Speaker 8: I mean, that's just who I am. I'm a dominant presence.
- 32:23Speaker 2: I don't have.
- 32:23Speaker 8: Words to express how I'm feeling right now, just a
- 32:28Speaker 8: whole It's a lot of excitement and a lot of
- 32:30Speaker 8: you know, juice that you know, just to be a
- 32:33Speaker 8: part of this team and this organization. And I think
- 32:37Speaker 8: I'm being a guy that just hold down the middle
- 32:38Speaker 8: of that of that field and control the paint.
- 32:42Speaker 1: I love your miked up segments that you've done in
- 32:45Speaker 1: years past because it's obvious how much fun you have
- 32:48Speaker 1: out there. Describe your your love for playing this game.
- 32:51Speaker 8: I just have joy, like endless joy like you. Around
- 32:54Speaker 8: the building, You're gonna see me laughing and smiling a lot,
- 32:56Speaker 8: and on the field dancing and cutting up.
- 32:59Speaker 1: You know.
- 32:59Speaker 8: But I know when it's time to get serious, you know,
- 33:01Speaker 8: Like I just my joy for the game over takes
- 33:05Speaker 8: over everything else that you know that goes on with
- 33:07Speaker 8: the business and things like that. So I just I
- 33:11Speaker 8: just thank God every day for this position that I'm in,
- 33:14Speaker 8: and I asked for it back in high school. In
- 33:16Speaker 8: high school, I asked to be a high school you know,
- 33:18Speaker 8: a household name.
- 33:19Speaker 7: You know.
- 33:20Speaker 8: I didn't know what it took or what it meant,
- 33:22Speaker 8: but that's just what this is, just how I felt
- 33:24Speaker 8: I know I could be. So I'm excited. I pray
- 33:27Speaker 8: for this and I'm just.
- 33:28Speaker 7: Ready to go.
- 33:29Speaker 1: You were a Giant's captain the last four years. Do
- 33:31Speaker 1: you immediately look to take on a leadership role here?
- 33:35Speaker 8: Naturally, I think it'll happen.
- 33:37Speaker 7: I won't.
- 33:37Speaker 8: I don't force myself upon things you know, you gotta
- 33:39Speaker 8: get to know people. You gotta get to know how
- 33:42Speaker 8: they react, and you gotta gotta understand them, and so
- 33:45Speaker 8: you know, I think naturally it'll happened. So I'm excited
- 33:48Speaker 8: for that.
- 33:49Speaker 1: You spent the last seven years in New York City.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Now you are going to be a big fish and
- 33:53Speaker 1: a little bit of a smaller pond. Bengals fans are
- 33:57Speaker 1: over the moon about this news. Have you picked up
- 33:59Speaker 1: a cent to that yet?
- 34:00Speaker 7: I have?
- 34:01Speaker 6: I have.
- 34:02Speaker 8: You know, I'm getting a lot of phone going crazy.
- 34:04Speaker 8: There's no fans hitting me up and things like that.
- 34:07Speaker 8: So you know, I think I appreciate them accepting me,
- 34:10Speaker 8: you know, bringing me in. Like I said, I've been
- 34:12Speaker 8: seven years in New York, so it's gonna be a
- 34:16Speaker 8: little different, little adjustment, you know, a little slower, but
- 34:18Speaker 8: it's gonna be nice.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Your former Clemson teammate T Higgins scored a touchdown in
- 34:23Speaker 1: the Pro Bowl. He busted out the sexy dexy dance.
- 34:27Speaker 1: How did he do?
- 34:29Speaker 8: I read him eight?
- 34:30Speaker 7: He got a eight?
- 34:32Speaker 1: He got if he got a eight. So this franchise
- 34:37Speaker 1: has been known for some of the great celebrators in
- 34:40Speaker 1: NFL history. Chad Johnson set the bar very high with
- 34:43Speaker 1: all of his celebrations. Javar obviously helped popularize the gritty.
- 34:47Speaker 1: What about the sexy dexy dance? How does it compare?
- 34:51Speaker 8: We just gotta get some dancing on the defensive side,
