- 0:02Arsenal left side to the middle. What a move by Philip Forsberg.
- 0:06One of the best from Scoresberg. It's the podcast that loves the
- 0:12hockey team you love. Sorrow stops him with the
- 0:15blocker. This is The Predator's official
- 0:18podcast with Cara Hammer and Max Hers for the empty net and hits
- 0:22it on a bound. One O 2 five and one O 6 three
- 0:26The game at nashvillepredators.com.
- 0:29This is the Predators official podcast here on your exclusive
- 0:33radio home for Pred sake ESPN. One O 2 five and one O 6 three
- 0:38The game. My name is Max hers.
- 0:40We are recording on Friday October 25th.
- 0:43Predators headed into a weekend back-to-back starting Friday
- 0:46night in Chicago at 7:30, then back home for a Saturday night
- 0:50in Smashville on Saturday, October 26th against the
- 0:54Columbus Blue Jackets. Kara Hammer from Preds TV is
- 0:58here. And Kara, we finally have win #1
- 1:01to talk about on the podcast Tuesday night against the
- 1:04Bruins. Max the Predators are in the win
- 1:07column the first two points of the season and war hockey is
- 1:11being played tonight. The guys are on the road in
- 1:13Chicago. Big back-to-back coming up this
- 1:16weekend, we're going to spend some time talking about win #1
- 1:20and what a win it was in shut out fashion for nothing on
- 1:23Tuesday night on home ice against the Bruins.
- 1:26I, I loved Kara after the game after his 33 save shut out as
- 1:31the headliner to break an O and five start.
- 1:33UC Sorrows said to the crowd while you were interviewing him.
- 1:37Thanks for your patience everybody.
- 1:40I think that there was so much expectation to start this season
- 1:44when the guys came out and they dropped the 1st. 5I do think
- 1:47that there was a lot of talk amongst the fans and so I think
- 1:50that's where that came from, from UC Sorrows.
- 1:53But what a great performance, Max, to come out and pick up
- 1:56your first win of the season, especially against the Boston
- 1:58Bruins. Yeah, if there were ever a win
- 2:01to a Race O in five, I think that one got pretty close win
- 2:05that you of course LED throughout because you didn't
- 2:07give up a goal. You got a power play goal, you
- 2:09got a goal that came right after a power play ended.
- 2:12Then you got an odd man rush goal and an empty netter to seal
- 2:15it. And an incredible goaltending
- 2:17performance from UC Soros, who I don't think he should be
- 2:21thanking us. Kara, after that game, the fans
- 2:24should be thanking the juice man, right?
- 2:26The thanks should be going the other way.
- 2:29I agree it's all about the juice box, but also there were some
- 2:32incredible defensive moments during that game.
- 2:36Before we get to the scoring started, I have to talk about
- 2:39Alex Carrier because he had he had a very costly turnover right
- 2:44earlier in the week and he made a defensive play to keep the
- 2:48puck out of the neck Max that I think really kept the pretz in
- 2:52this game. So I feel like Carrier should be
- 2:54credited with a save. It was a huge moment in the
- 2:57game, but let's go back to the two biggest highlights.
- 3:02For me, it has to be Zach LaRue making his NHL debut.
- 3:06And then what about that goal from Gus Nyquist?
- 3:09It felt like I saw somebody tweet this, and I think this is
- 3:12the best ex explanation for it. If there could be a change up in
- 3:17the game of hockey, this was it. That's Gus Nyquist.
- 3:21He did it so much last year. He was low glove Gus on that
- 3:25goal. He just slows the game to a
- 3:27crawl when he's at his best. And he made a joke after the
- 3:31game he was due for that one because he hit the post on the
- 3:34exact same rush earlier in the game on the other end of the
- 3:37ice. And he's been counting posts
- 3:40going scoreless through the first five games.
- 3:42He said two posts and a crossbar so far this year for him.
- 3:45So great to get Gus on the board.
- 3:47Luke Evangelista got on the board with the empty netter.
- 3:51It just felt like the whole team got right, snapped back, came
- 3:54off the schneid, however you want to put it.
- 3:57It was a full team effort to do that.
- 3:59And one thing that multiple players and coach Andrew
- 4:01Brunette pointed out after the game, care at various times,
- 4:05their stick positioning was a big reason why they won this
- 4:08game. They weren't letting teams just
- 4:09pass the puck straight up the ice on the breakout.
- 4:12They had their sticks down. They were getting loose pucks.
- 4:15They were knocking things down and I think that's what got them
- 4:18back to the system in a lot of ways.
- 4:20And players across the board were saying This is why we
- 4:23clicked back into the system. And once they said it, it became
- 4:28very obvious that that was it. One thing that really stood out
- 4:31to me also was the speed of the game.
- 4:34It felt like it was more fluid, where before it, it just seemed
- 4:38kind of choppy. There was a lot of turnovers, a
- 4:40lot of mistakes. The guys came out, I think
- 4:43Willie Donaghy's this word, and it has stood out to me,
- 4:46ruggedness. And the a prime example has to
- 4:50be when Ryan O'Reilly came out for his first period, or excuse
- 4:54me, first intermission interview with me after the first period
- 4:56and his nose was bleeding. He got cut, didn't face him at
- 5:00all. Still went into the cold tub
- 5:02during the intermission before coming out for the second
- 5:04period. But that's what it was.
- 5:07It was a rugged, gritty win and the guys were able to pull it
- 5:10out. Notorious from the fact Daddy
- 5:13for multiple reasons. First of all, he's notorious
- 5:16around the NHL for being cold tub at every intermission guy,
- 5:19which apparently he's the only player in the NHL who does that.
- 5:25I thought about this and does he, does he put on like dry gear
- 5:29afterwards? Because you know, when the guys
- 5:31come out and I interview them, obviously you can see how much
- 5:34they're sweating, they're working, they're grinding out
- 5:36there. And you know, like then do you
- 5:40put on like the sweaty leggings and the the sweaty top after you
- 5:44just get in the cold tub? Like how does this work?
- 5:46Well, it's not like you're getting dressed up for a nice
- 5:48dinner. You're getting redressed to go
- 5:50out and sweat as much as you just did again.
- 5:52So I think you're raising some good points and I think you're
- 5:55going to have to go find out. Hammer.
- 5:58We're going to have to do an in depth story.
- 5:59I will. I will work on this before the
- 6:01next podcast. Yeah, and the big cut on the
- 6:03bridge of his nose, magnified and glorified by the fact that
- 6:08O'Reilly is now just one of four NHL errs who is not wearing a
- 6:12visor on his helmet. It was grandfathered out about a
- 6:14decade ago. O'Reilly is one of four
- 6:17remaining. The others are Jamie Benn, Ryan
- 6:20Reeves and Zac Boghossian. Last year, there are 6.
- 6:24We lost Matt Martin and Milan Lucci, 2.
- 6:26Both are not on teams right now, though they have not officially
- 6:29retired. But we're getting down to four
- 6:31guys with no visors on their buckets.
- 6:33And Ryan O'Reilly wearing the battle scarf for it as he comes
- 6:37to hang out with you at the intermission.
- 6:39Yeah, no bucket. And how about Zach LaRue doing
- 6:42his rookie hot lap with no bucket?
- 6:44He came out free flowing. You know, I guess it's just a,
- 6:49it just is a freeing feeling. Welcome to the show.
- 6:52It's a great league isn't it? As how Gil would say so.
- 6:54Some other early moments that separated the Preds in this
- 6:57game. Penalty kill 8 minutes in.
- 7:00Massive saves by UC Soros on the penalty kill, first on Brad
- 7:04Marsh and with his cranium on a shot from the left circle and
- 7:09then a slot one timer by Elias Lindholm that Soros came way up
- 7:13to the top of the crease to save and pinned it up against his
- 7:15body. Two big saves in short sequence
- 7:18there and then on the next shift of the power play, David
- 7:20Posternock was loitering on the left goal line, which is a spot
- 7:24that he was looking to distribute from.
- 7:26He went all the way across Soros Cross crease pass to Pavel Zaka
- 7:30waiting on the back door alone. Sorrow shuffled from his right
- 7:33to his left, made a massive save and he said he knew he was
- 7:38there. He knew Poster Knock likes to
- 7:40make no look passes from that spot.
- 7:42He said on Wednesday he knew exactly where Zaka was.
- 7:46Those to me were my favorite Sorrow saves from the shout out.
- 7:49But I don't know, I think there could be some other nominees
- 7:52too. That save he made on Poster
- 7:53Knock right at the beginning of the third period when Poster
- 7:56Knock just kind of took him out some big stops.
- 8:00Yeah, I mean, he kept the Preds in this game, so much special
- 8:04teams, right, coming off of that, obviously Ryan O'Reilly
- 8:07got the scoring started with the power play goal.
- 8:11But then the Preds had a huge that there was the double minor
- 8:14in the second period and the Preds came out.
- 8:17They were able to move the puck with the with the man advantage.
- 8:21I still to this day do not know how Tommy Novak's goal was not
- 8:24considered on the power play because I swear that clock was
- 8:28still running. But I guess at that point it had
- 8:31been back to even strength because that's how they credited
- 8:33him. Yeah, I actually thought the
- 8:34same thing. So I, I don't know if something
- 8:37changed with the clock or what, but I I independently thought
- 8:40the same thing and hadn't said it to anyone else.
- 8:42But now that you say it, I think, yeah, I think we're both
- 8:46right here. But technically not a power play
- 8:48goal. I've got the game sheet up right
- 8:49here and let me hit refresh real quick because sometimes they do
- 8:54change these things. Yeah, it is still an even
- 8:56strength goal for Tommy Novak. But in essence, it happened on
- 9:00the power play. Novak had a couple of those
- 9:02moments where he just had everybody googly eyeing at the
- 9:05puck on his stick in this game. Got the second one to go.
- 9:08Luke Evangelista and Brady Shea the assists with that second
- 9:11power play unit still hanging around out there as Charlie
- 9:15McAvoy came out-of-the-box after the double minor high stick up
- 9:18on Steven Stamkos his face. So that made it 2 nothing.
- 9:22Preds after two. Gus Nyquist with the Triple
- 9:24Crown goal to make it 3 nothing midway through the 3rd.
- 9:27Then the Bruins pulled their goalie really early with six
- 9:30minutes left and Luke Evangelista hit the empty net
- 9:33from long distance. Not exactly a pretty goal for
- 9:36the pretty boy, but whatever it takes to get goal number one for
- 9:38Evangelista on the season. O'Reilly, Novak Nyquist,
- 9:43Evangelista, your goal scorers. Roman Yossi had two assists.
- 9:46Luke Evangelista and Ryan O'Reilly each had a goal and an
- 9:49assist and then 33 saves from UC Sorrows, plenty enough to get
- 9:55the Preds in the win column for the first time this year for
- 9:58nothing over the Bruins on Tuesday night.
- 10:00That one felt good for everybody, Kara.
- 10:03And it felt very good for Zach LaRue and his wonderful family,
- 10:07who you got a chance to meet. An interview on the debut of not
- 10:11just Zach LaRue, but also on the new FanDuel Sports Network, the
- 10:15new name of Preds TV on Tuesday night.
- 10:18Let's listen. I'm upstairs with the parents of
- 10:20Zach LaRue, Robert and Trabada Have to ask, what was it like
- 10:24experiencing your sons first shift here in the National
- 10:27Hockey League? It's absolutely incredible.
- 10:29It's a dream come true. You're waiting all our lives.
- 10:31Zach been waiting all his life. He's worked so hard for this and
- 10:35he's doing it and honestly, I don't have words.
- 10:37It's, it's crazy. I can cheer up every time I
- 10:39think about it because it's not over yet.
- 10:42Now, I know there's 30 family members here.
- 10:44What's it like to make this an entire family event?
- 10:47It's unbelievable that 30 people would take the time and and it's
- 10:51expensive for Montreal to come here and like experience this
- 10:54with that. He's so incredibly thankful and
- 10:57it's been unbelievable. Well, Congrats to you too.
- 11:00Thank you so much. Thank.
- 11:01You. What a beautiful couple.
- 11:03Great interview Kara. You could feel the love with
- 11:06Robert and Siobhan LaRue on Tuesday night.
- 11:09Yeah, they had, I, I should have said 30 family members and
- 11:12friends. They had a huge group of people
- 11:14there. I was able to catch up with them
- 11:17in the lounge before the game even started and you could just
- 11:20feel the excitement. And I loved it because mom and
- 11:23dad already were wearing the LaRue jerseys, so they had that
- 11:27in place. His little sister was there
- 11:31also. The grandparents were there.
- 11:32His grandma was there. And Mark Borvietsky was back in
- 11:37Nashville for the first time this season at a game.
- 11:39And me and Boro, we're having a conversation and we were talking
- 11:42about Zach LaRue coming out and making his debut.
- 11:45And Boro said to me, you know what?
- 11:48The grandma, the other grandma, she's not here, but she's a
- 11:52hoop. He goes, she comes to all the
- 11:54games when they're up in Ottawa, he goes, that's the grandma that
- 11:57she needs to come down and that's when you need to put on
- 11:59the broadcast. That is awesome.
- 12:01Yeah, Hal and Lindsay got a chance to meet his parents and
- 12:04the set of grandparents that were present for the game.
- 12:07And I think there was some debate between his mom and
- 12:10grandma about whether or not he should fight in the game,
- 12:13according to Hal. So funny family, Zach LaRue,
- 12:16really funny guy. And I must admit, watching that
- 12:20interview, I did not get to meet Robert and Siobhan in person
- 12:22like you did, Kara. But I think Zach both looks and
- 12:26sounds exactly like his father. They have the exact same manner
- 12:30of speech. I could see that and you know
- 12:33it. It's a, it's like a cool moment
- 12:35because although it's Zach who's playing in his first NHL game,
- 12:39we all know how involved the families are.
- 12:42I heard Barry Trotz go up to them and he was congratulating
- 12:46Robert Siobhan. Like that's what it means to the
- 12:49family. It it's everybody's debut,
- 12:51essentially. That's awesome.
- 12:53Yeah. That's so, so cool.
- 12:54I'm. I'm so glad you got to interview
- 12:56them on TV. And one other funny moment I
- 12:58caught on Fred's TV rewatching the game.
- 13:01A big shout out to our director, Luke Rosenmeyer for capturing
- 13:05this great moment. The moment the horn sounded to
- 13:08end the game, they panned the camera to Zach Larue's parents
- 13:12celebrating the win in his NHL debut.
- 13:14And his father, Robert LaRue, had a moment that we've all had.
- 13:18As a fan of the hockey game, I think many people out there will
- 13:20be able to relate to this. The horn sounds and he looks at
- 13:24his beer and he goes, Oh my God, I've still got 4 sips left.
- 13:27And then just as the camera cuts away, you can see he's about to
- 13:30go back to the well to finish it off.
- 13:31But the game's over. I got to finish my beer.
- 13:33And we told Zach that story on Smashville Live the next night.
- 13:38By the way, he set a record fastest debut to Smashville Live
- 13:42appearance one day. So Zach LaRue just setting
- 13:46records all over the place. But he goes, yeah, that sounds
- 13:49like my dad. I love that he's such a great
- 13:54kid. He was so personable, right?
- 13:55We both had the chance to talk to him at morning skate and he
- 13:59talked about growing up in Montreal.
- 14:02You grow up, you don't like the Boston Bruins, that's a team you
- 14:05don't like. So it was a cool moment for him
- 14:07that his NHL debut came against, you know, his number one rival
- 14:11growing up as a kid. Yeah, and he's been prototyped
- 14:13by many to be Brad Marshian, 2 point O, and he acknowledged
- 14:17that. But he says he also wants to
- 14:19create his own type of player. So that's something fun just to
- 14:23get into his mind as he embarks on his NHL career.
- 14:27He'll be back in there for the Predators this weekend.
- 14:29A couple more things I do want to say about Larue's debut.
- 14:32You mentioned that there were 30 folks, friends and family in the
- 14:36building. We were alerted by some of the
- 14:38media members from his his junior team, his QMJHL team, the
- 14:43Halifax Moose Heads, where he was as recently as two seasons
- 14:47ago playing junior hockey, that one of the people who would be
- 14:50coming to support him is the assistant equipment manager from
- 14:53the Moose Heads, Tyler Long, who has special needs and is
- 14:57extremely close with Zach LaRue. He was up there with his family
- 15:01wearing the very stark, visible green Halifax, who said sweater
- 15:06at the game. And we got a chance to ask Zach
- 15:08about what it meant to have Tyler there on Smashville live
- 15:12at his NHL debut. Yeah, it's, it's, it's so
- 15:15special, you know, the the relationship and the bond I have
- 15:17with him. And you know, he's just like any
- 15:20other one of my buddies. He.
- 15:22Calls me all the time keep in touch and his mom always told me
- 15:25that when the day comes, if she had a you know, enough notice
- 15:29and can make it would would do everything to to you know, be
- 15:31there. So obviously, you know, when I
- 15:33got out there for a warm up and saw that green jersey and put a
- 15:36huge smile on my face and, you know, just made me want to, you
- 15:39know, play even better for him. Zach said Kara that Tyler Long
- 15:42and his mom got on a plane at 3:00 AM Nashville time in
- 15:48Halifax, NS, Canada that day to make it to the game.
- 15:53I love that we have to give a shout out to to Mavs Gillis, who
- 15:58sent me this e-mail letting me know, he said.
- 16:00I'm going to drop you a line about Zach's friend who's making
- 16:03his trip. And you know, it's so cool to
- 16:06see players have relationships like this, you know, where so
- 16:10many people can come out and support them when they have a
- 16:12special moment. And my favorite on ice moment of
- 16:16Zach Larue's NHL debut, His third shift.
- 16:20He showed us the human Wrecking Ball that he said he wants to
- 16:22be. He was on the forecheck, 2 solid
- 16:26firm hits on defenceman Andrew Peak and then he came back for
- 16:301/3 lick on Peaks D partner Mason Lorei, who is 6 foot 5
- 16:36inches tall. LaRue is 511, and LaRue sent him
- 16:41down to the ice in a heap on the forecheck.
- 16:45And this was Kara right before the moment in the game where I
- 16:48get to see you. And we're both in historic
- 16:51Studio H outside the locker room at Bridgestone Arena, getting
- 16:54ready to each do an interview at the first intermission.
- 16:56And if the TV time outs line up right, I got to spend a few
- 17:00minutes at every game standing right up against the glass
- 17:03behind the goal on my way down from the press box.
- 17:06And that was that segment of the game.
- 17:07And that was the right end of the ice.
- 17:09So I got to feel all three of those right in front of me and
- 17:12see Mason Lorei just crumple those big long limbs at the
- 17:16mercy of Zach LaRue. Hey, Michael McCarron told me
- 17:20before the game that Zach LaRue is a dog on a bone.
- 17:24They knew this is what he was going to bring.
- 17:26This is why he got the call up. Max.
- 17:28We saw it first hand. Box Office Zach LaRue, Box
- 17:31Office, NHL debut. The 103rd NHL player to make his
- 17:36NHL debut for the Preds, 1st in almost an entire year.
- 17:39Zach LaRue, 21 years old, from Mercier, Quebec, Canada, near
- 17:43Montreal. So awesome to have him in
- 17:45Smashville. We'll see how long he sticks.
- 17:48Last time this happened, couple years ago, a Preds forward
- 17:51prospect got called up named Luke Evangelista.
- 17:54He was told he would be up for one game.
- 17:56Kara. He still has never left.
- 18:00Yeah. I think one thing that stands
- 18:03out about Zach LaRue and, and skating on a line with Mike
- 18:06McCarron and Cole Smith is they share the same mindset.
- 18:11These players all have the same mentality that they're going to
- 18:14go out, they're going to be gritty, they're going to work
- 18:16hard. And when the Preds lost keeper
- 18:20Sherwood this offseason, they were missing that a little bit.
- 18:22And I think he just fills right in with what with what Sherwood
- 18:26had that that same mental toughness.
- 18:29And hopefully we'll we'll see Zach LaRue more this season.
- 18:32Hey, Bruno said it to me after the game.
- 18:34He would like to see him play more.
- 18:36All right, yeah. And he didn't get a ton of ice
- 18:38time in the game because of, like you said, Kara, a ton of
- 18:41special teams time in that game. And LaRue is not playing on
- 18:44either special team in the game. He played just about 10 minutes
- 18:47of ice time and he made his mark, that's for sure.
- 18:50We'll talk to Zach LaRue more on the podcast going forward.
- 18:53He was on Smashville Live. Like I said, search Smashville
- 18:57Live on whatever your podcast app is to hear me, Hal, Zach
- 19:01LaRue and Mark Delguizo. And I got to say, Kara, we had
- 19:05two rookies on the show, but we did have 1231 games of NHL
- 19:10experience on that show, but 1219 of them were Hal's.
- 19:17How with the silver stick? Yeah, how with the Silver Stick.
- 19:2011 games for Mark Delgazo at the time of recording, one for Zach
- 19:23LaRue, 0 for me and a four way tie for all of us with no goals
- 19:28scored for the Preds, which is embarrassing for just how we'll
- 19:34take a break, come back and honor Smashville's finest.
- 19:37David Poyle is going into the Hockey Hall of Fame next month
- 19:41and he was in Smashville this week with a couple guests from
- 19:44the Hall of Fame for a unique special ceremony.
- 19:47We'll hear from the GM coming up next here on the Predators
- 19:50official podcast. She's Gary Hammer from Preds TV.
- 19:53I'm Max Herz from Preds Radio. This is the POP.
- 20:06I let you drive around my mind. Welcome back to the Predators
- 20:12official podcast here on ESPN 102.5 and 106.3.
- 20:16The game a little Jelly roll for you here on The POP Predator is
- 20:21back-to-back this weekend. Friday night against the
- 20:24Blackhawks in Chicago, then Saturday night in Smashville
- 20:28against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
- 20:30Looking forward to seeing everybody at the rink.
- 20:33Three games in four days for the Preds starting Friday night.
- 20:36That will conclude with Steven Stamkos his return to Tampa on
- 20:40Monday night against the Lightning.
- 20:42I'm Max Hers from Preds radio with Kara Hammer from Preds TV
- 20:46Kara. It was fun to be at Bridgestone
- 20:48Arena on Tuesday morning before the preds got their first win of
- 20:52the season that night against the Bruins.
- 20:54Some special visitors from the Hockey Hall of Fame for that
- 20:57game and two dignitaries from the Hockey Hall of Fame were at
- 21:00Bridgestone Arena. Craig Campbell, who is one of
- 21:03the keepers of the Stanley Cup. He is the manager of the Hockey
- 21:07Hall of Fame's Resource and Archive Center in Toronto.
- 21:10And also Kelly Massey, who is the director of the Hockey Hall
- 21:14of Fame's corporate and media relations, who, big shout out to
- 21:17Kelly, became the first female trophy presenter in Hockey Hall
- 21:22of Fame and international hockey history when she gave out the
- 21:25PWHL Trophy after their inaugural season this summer.
- 21:28So big shout out to Kelly Massey for that.
- 21:31Hoping to make it to a PWHL game at some point on the road this
- 21:34season. But it was great to have Craig
- 21:36and Kelly in Nashville. And they were in Nashville to
- 21:39honor David Poyle, who is going into the Hockey Hall of Fame in
- 21:43the second week of November. Coming up soon in Toronto.
- 21:46He's been selected and one big step in the selection process is
- 21:50getting your Hockey Hall of Fame Blazer fit.
- 21:53And we got to see David get measured by his personal tailor,
- 21:58David Levy, who's a Nashvillian in front of a crowd.
- 22:02It was honestly a very funny thing to be at, but David made
- 22:06it so cool and personable because that's who David Poyle
- 22:09is. That's exactly who he is.
- 22:11He has so much personality and it was shining through on the
- 22:14broadcast when we had him on talking about getting inducted
- 22:16into the Hall of Fame. Where were you when you got the
- 22:19call, and what was your reaction when you got the call?
- 22:22I was in Florida and as, as you may know, I'm on the induction
- 22:26committee. I got kicked off the committee
- 22:28because I got, I got nominated this year.
- 22:30So I knew that kind of the drill.
- 22:32I knew if, if something was ever going to happen, what, what time
- 22:35it would be. And I, I told my wife that
- 22:38they'll get a call between 1:00 and 2:00.
- 22:40And I got a 416 area code call, which is Toronto at 12:58.
- 22:46And I, I don't know if you heard the story, but so I pick up the
- 22:50phone. I said hello.
- 22:51And Lanny McDonald's on the other Lance is David.
- 22:55And I said, Lanny, there's a pause and he says, David, you
- 23:01have Shay Webber's phone number. That's pretty good.
- 23:07So I, I kind of broke up. And then he says, oh, by the
- 23:11way, you're going to be inducted in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
- 23:13And then he says, what's your reaction?
- 23:16I couldn't, I couldn't talk. I was just because, you know,
- 23:19just that's, that's the pinnacle and it's just been so cool ever
- 23:23ever since that happened, I've been able to touch base with so
- 23:26many friends and family and people that have been part of my
- 23:30career. And over the years, it's just
- 23:32been just the coolest experience.
- 23:34The winningest GM in NHL history, and he's David Poile.
- 23:39You know how Gil called him the builder?
- 23:42And that's exactly what he is. Yeah, it's an app title and
- 23:47it's, it's such a funny story. And I think Lanny McDonald is
- 23:51the perfect person to give him the call because anytime I
- 23:53picture Lanny McDonald, I just see mustache everywhere.
- 23:57And, you know, he's messing with David because as David said,
- 24:02he's been on the selection committee.
- 24:04So he's involved in terms of picking who is in the Hall of
- 24:07Fame. And they basically said you're
- 24:10nominated this year, so you're not on the committee anymore.
- 24:12But he, he knew he was being considered.
- 24:14He, he didn't know he had officially been chosen to be in
- 24:16the Hall of Fame yet. And Shay Weber is also part of
- 24:20this class. So Lanny saw the opportunity to
- 24:23totally mess with David Poyle in a moment where, like he said, he
- 24:27would know exactly when the call would come because he's been on
- 24:30the other end of those calls so many times, letting hockey
- 24:33people know that they are in the Hall of Fame.
- 24:35It's just a perfect moment to mess with him in a very nervous
- 24:39hour. Yeah.
- 24:42Oh, that's great. I love it.
- 24:44I'm so happy for him. I am too, yeah.
- 24:47And that ceremony will be coming up in Toronto at the Hockey Hall
- 24:50of Fame the weekend of November 10th.
- 24:53The ceremony is on Monday morning, November 11th.
- 24:57There is a Maple Leafs game that is always on Hockey Night in
- 25:00Canada, part of the Hall of Fame induction, and we will also be
- 25:04in Toronto a few weeks after that for the Preds and Maple
- 25:07Leafs the first week of December.
- 25:08So I'm hoping to get a chance to see David Poyle and Shay Weber's
- 25:12Hockey Hall of Fame exhibitions while they're still fresh, less
- 25:15than a month after their inductions.
- 25:17And we got a preview of what will be in David's.
- 25:19Not only was he getting fitted for his Hockey Hall of Fame
- 25:22Blazer, he was also making the exchange with the dignitaries
- 25:26from the Hall of Fame of making some donations of memorabilia
- 25:31that will be in his exhibit at the Hall of Fame.
- 25:33Some really cool stuff, including one of his old JOFA
- 25:36helmets from his college and pro hockey playing days in the AHL
- 25:40and at Northeastern. So a JOFA helmet is going in
- 25:43there. And I think my favorite thing, a
- 25:46double framed lineup card with his the lineup card from his
- 25:51first win as an NHLGM on October 6th, 1982.
- 25:56His first game as AGM was his first win as AGM at Madison
- 26:00Square Garden. Capitals 5, Rangers 4 in 1982,
- 26:04and then on the other side of the other panel, Preds and
- 26:09Oilers in 2018 when Poyle officially became the winningest
- 26:13GM in NHL history. The lineup cards and game pucks
- 26:16from both as presented to him by the Preds in the NHL at the
- 26:19time. Now they're going to the Hockey
- 26:21Hall of Fame. Kara.
- 26:23Wow, that's so cool. That's great.
- 26:27And David also spoke after his jacket ceremony about how many
- 26:32calls he has gotten, how it's been such an opportunity for him
- 26:37to thank and reconnect and catch up with everyone across the
- 26:42hockey world who reached out to him now that he's retired.
- 26:45People he hasn't had a chance to speak to in the year and a half
- 26:48since he's officially retired as the Predator's GM.
- 26:51That is what he said he was most thankful for the Hall of Fame
- 26:54for reopening those relationships.
- 26:56And he also made a point. Care to say?
- 26:59Everyone in Nashville, everyone I've ever worked with,
- 27:02everywhere I was ever involved in hockey is going in with me
- 27:05because I'm not a player. It wasn't God-given athletic
- 27:08ability that's getting me into the Hall of Fame.
- 27:10It's the organizations and fan bases and teams and players that
- 27:14I was a part of and in charge of assembling.
- 27:17I, you know, I always think about what David Poyle told us
- 27:20when he became the winningest GM in NHL history.
- 27:23And he said that when he was younger, he had a list and he
- 27:28wrote out all the goals that he wanted and he wanted to just
- 27:32keep this job until his kids were done with college.
- 27:34That was his goal. He said.
- 27:35I, I had things. I wanted to be a GM.
- 27:37I wanted to work in the NHL. Then when he got the job, he
- 27:40said, I, I want to, you know, stay married to Elizabeth.
- 27:42And I want to do this until my kids are grown.
- 27:46And look how far he's come back and how long he was able to do
- 27:49it. He checked every box and it was
- 27:51a family affair for sure. His wife Elizabeth was there.
- 27:54His son Brian is there, who is an assistant general manager for
- 27:57the Predators and his dad was there in spirit.
- 28:00His father, Bud Poyle, is also in the Hockey Hall of Fame as an
- 28:03NHLGM. They had his Blazer there and
- 28:07also David had Bud's Hockey Hall of Fame ring and he showed it to
- 28:12Kelly from the Hall of Fame during the speech and she said
- 28:15there'll be more diamonds on yours.
- 28:17We've added a few since your dad went into the hall.
- 28:22That's so neat. So congratulations to David
- 28:25Poyle. He and Shay Weber will be
- 28:26representing the Preds and going into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
- 28:30First, two of many folks who you think of as a Pred first will be
- 28:35going into the Hall of Fame. I know there are others in there
- 28:37who have played for the Preds briefly or for a season or two.
- 28:41These are guys who, if it were the Baseball Hall of Fame, when
- 28:44you choose a team to go in as on your plaque, they'd be going in
- 28:47as Preds. That's not how the Hockey Hall
- 28:49of Fame works. You're not wearing a ball cap in
- 28:51your hockey portrait, of course, but it's going to be a whole lot
- 28:55of fun. Brooks Bratton will be there at
- 28:56the Hall of Fame reporting for nashvillepredators.com.
- 28:59So we'll be talking to him about that event.
- 29:01We wish we could be there, but the Preds will be playing at the
- 29:04same time. So it's not too kind to the
- 29:06schedule maker to do it mid season.
- 29:09But so happy for David Poyle and Shay Weber, who'll be going into
- 29:11the Hockey Hall of Fame in just a couple of weeks next month
- 29:15representing Smashville. We'll take a break, come back,
- 29:18tell you more coming up in Smashville, including this
- 29:20weekend, how the Preds will be remembering Johnny and Matthew
- 29:23Goodrow as they take on the Blue Jackets on Saturday night.
- 29:27She's Cara Hammer from Predators TV.
- 29:29I'm Max Sirs from Preds Radio. This is the Predators official
- 29:32podcast. Run your exclusive radio home
- 29:34for Preds Hockey ESPN 102.5 and 106.3 the game.
- 29:58Welcome back to the Predators official podcast here on ESPN.
- 30:01One O 2 five and one O 6 three. The game.
- 30:04My name is Max hers from Preds radio along with Kara Hammer
- 30:08from Preds TV. Big sports weekend coming up
- 30:11here in Nashville. 2 Preds games, including a home game on
- 30:14Saturday night at 7 against the Columbus Blue Jackets and also
- 30:20Vandy football versus Texas. Kara, I think I have lined it
- 30:25up. I got my tickets secured from
- 30:28the good folks at One O 25 The Game.
- 30:30Shout out to the suits, Chase McCabe and Sean Fort.
- 30:33I think I'm going to be able to do the first half of Vandy,
- 30:36Texas before coming on down to Smashville on Saturday.
- 30:39How are you feeling about this Vandy game?
- 30:42I'm just excited to to go to a game.
- 30:44As a fan, I don't really get the opportunity much.
- 30:46I worked their first two games of the season this year, which
- 30:49included the awesome win over Virginia Tech to start the year.
- 30:53The Alabama game I did not get to watch at all because the
- 30:55Preds were playing a preseason game simultaneously.
- 30:58So I'm just excited to be down there.
- 31:00But I'd I'd wanted to go to this game even before Vandy became a
- 31:03top 25 team, which by the way, they have not been since before
- 31:07I was even in college there and they are now.
- 31:10Well, we, we know what's going to happen because we're so
- 31:12hockey in the world, Excuse me, we're so superstitious in the
- 31:16world of hockey, Max, that if they're not doing good after the
- 31:18first time, you're going to have to leave and not watch anymore
- 31:21since that's what happened when they beat Alabama.
- 31:23Well, I'll tell you what Kara, even if they're winning 100 to
- 31:26nothing, I still have to leave to make it to the friends given
- 31:29time. So I think we're set on that
- 31:31one. I love it.
- 31:33Well, Saturday night's going to be a special night in
- 31:36Smashville. Obviously we love Saturday
- 31:37nights in Smashville, but also Max, the wives are doing
- 31:40something really cool. Danielle Nyquist, who's married
- 31:44to obviously Gus Nyquist. Gus played with Jonny Goudreau
- 31:47when they were in Columbus. And since the press are taking
- 31:50on the Blue Jackets, the wives, spearheaded by Danielle, have
- 31:54come together and made bracelets that they're going to be selling
- 31:58in honor of the Johnny and Matthew Goudreau Foundation.
- 32:02So the wives are going to be set up at table one O 8 and they'll
- 32:06be selling these bracelets. They are have beads on them.
- 32:10They're black, they're gold and they have the numbers 13 and 21.
- 32:14They're so cool looking, just saw a photo of them.
- 32:18So if you're at the rink on Saturday night, stop by One O 8
- 32:22and buy a bracelet to help the foundation.
- 32:25Or if not, we'll post AQR code or post it on social media.
- 32:29If you don't have a chance to make it, you could order one
- 32:31online. Beautiful.
- 32:33Yeah. Thank you to Danielle Nyquist
- 32:35for leading that charge. We talked about the tragedy a
- 32:38little bit in the offseason, Cara, but it's just
- 32:40incomprehensible to even think about.
- 32:42And the hockey world has been exceptional in reaction to
- 32:46something so awful. And every NHL team, so many
- 32:49teams at so many levels have stepped up to honor John and
- 32:52Matthew Gaudreau. And the honored, the Preds are
- 32:56doing their part, but just incomprehensibly sad.
- 33:00Yeah, it's so sad and and it's neat to see how much it brought
- 33:06everyone together and everybody is so sympathetic amongst the
- 33:11league. Absolutely.
- 33:13The Preds have been wearing helmet decals as everyone in the
- 33:15NHL has been here at the beginning of the season honoring
- 33:18Johnny and Matthew Goudreau. Predators will host Johnny
- 33:21Goudreaux, Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night in Smashville
- 33:25at 7:00. So looking forward to seeing you
- 33:27there again. That's the foundation table
- 33:29behind section One O 8 where the Predators wives will be set up
- 33:33selling those wristbands for a donation to the Goodrow Charity
- 33:36Foundation. So thank you, Kara, for bringing
- 33:39that to our attention. You'll be talking about it more
- 33:41on the TV broadcast during that game on Saturday night as well.
- 33:45But just, I hate even thinking about it because it makes me so
- 33:49sad. But again, happy that the
- 33:52Predators are doing their part and looking forward to having
- 33:55the Blue Jackets for their only visit of the regular season to
- 33:57Nashville here this weekend. Preds will be back home after
- 34:00that on Thursday night next week, which is Halloween night.
- 34:06Come in costume, did you? Get your costume yet?
- 34:09Did you get your costume? Yet I'm working on it.
- 34:12I you know what? I wasn't going to say it on air
- 34:14because I don't want to tip off Jay Moore to what it is.
- 34:16Jay, if you're listening, skip this part.
- 34:19If you know Jay Moore, don't tell Jay what I'm going to be.
- 34:23I'm going to wear the costume, which scares Jay more the most,
- 34:26the people who make him angry and give him nightmares, which
- 34:28is a hockey referee. So I'm looking to try and get
- 34:32all the pieces of the costume together.
- 34:35But we're working on it. But I I found a solution.
- 34:37I'm just going to wear it for the post game show Thursday,
- 34:40Kara. So I I don't want to be waiting
- 34:42for a player to do an interview if the Preds aren't doing well
- 34:44and I't sitting there dressed as a hockey ref.
- 34:46I don't think that's good for him.
- 34:49No, especially if there's like a lot of penalties called in the
- 34:51game. Exactly.
- 34:52Yeah, and then Jay's already mad and he thinks I'm the ref and he
- 34:55goes crazy and yeah, we don't want to make him to stir crazy
- 34:58on Halloween cuz maybe Jay would turn into a Canadian werewolf,
- 35:02who even knows? But Thursday night is Halloween.
- 35:06You know when Halloween is October 31st.
- 35:08President Edmondson Oilers, the 1st 5000 kids ages 12 and under
- 35:13at the game. Thursday night we'll get a
- 35:15Nashville Predators Halloween candy bucket.
- 35:18So if you're torn between trick or treating or coming to the
- 35:21game, we've got you covered at the game.
- 35:24Which I gotta tell you, this is the best thing about being a
- 35:26parent is the Halloween candy. Yeah, seriously, how much candy
- 35:30can Remy House? You're gonna end up with most of
- 35:32it for yourself. I, I, I taught her the, the key
- 35:37to the Halloween candy. You dump out the bucket, you
- 35:40separate it into your little piles.
- 35:42And since you know, she's only two, she can't really have any
- 35:45candy. We did let her have a small bit
- 35:48of chocolate, but you know, you'd like suckers are out.
- 35:51The, the sour candy is out. So, so there's like a mommy pile
- 35:56and then a Remy pile. And that's how I pulled this
- 36:00off. Good sorting, Good sorting.
- 36:02Well, yeah, we're looking forward to the Halloween game.
- 36:05One more thing I do want to say about the game on Saturday this
- 36:08weekend against the Blue Jackets, in addition to the
- 36:10Preds honoring the Goodro family, it is night two of four
- 36:15of Music Heritage Night. We had Hispanic Music Heritage
- 36:19Night earlier this month. This is the Predators 10th
- 36:21annual Pride celebration and it is Pride Music Heritage Night in
- 36:25Smashville. It will feature jerseys that
- 36:28again, cannot be worn during warmups due to the awful NHL
- 36:33rule that presents that. But Maya Sane has made an
- 36:36incredible design. She's a Memphis native.
- 36:38It is a Preds logo inspired by the 70s disco movement.
- 36:42It is basically a disco ball Pred in Pride colors.
- 36:47And fans will be getting coasters on the way in, just
- 36:50like they did for the Hispanic Heritage Night game. 1st 10,000
- 36:53fans will get a Pride Music Heritage logo record coaster.
- 36:58It's a spinning record with the Music Heritage Pred logo on it.
- 37:03Pretty awesome. That sounds so cool.
- 37:05Yeah, and there's a Plaza party starting at 5:00 PM honoring the
- 37:08LGBT plus community here in Smashville hosted by Zach McCann
- 37:12and Veronica Electronica, which is an awesome name.
- 37:15Zach needs to get on Veronica Electronica's level if he's
- 37:19going to be Co hosting with Veronica Electronica.
- 37:22They'll be music throughout the night, including the national
- 37:24anthem and intermissions and the Plaza Party honoring Pride
- 37:27music, Heritage Night, and the LGBTQ plus community here in
- 37:30Nashville. So it'll be a whole lot of fun
- 37:34on Saturday night in Smashville. Pride Night, the 10th annual
- 37:37Pride Night that the Preds will be hosting, featuring some
- 37:40remarks by Predator CEO Sean Henry at the Plaza Party in
- 37:44honor of 10 years of Preds Pride here in Smashville.
- 37:47So looking forward to welcoming members of the LGBTQ plus
- 37:51community to Smashville on Saturday night, as well as
- 37:54allies like us who are supporting.
- 37:56We'll take a break, come back, play our interview of the week
- 37:59and update you on our young goalie Wells, who just keeps
- 38:04getting more love from UC Sorrows.
- 38:06She's Garrett Hammer from Preds TV.
- 38:08I'm Max, hers from Preds Radio. This is the Predators official
- 38:11podcast. Welcome back to the Predators
- 38:34official podcast here on ESPN 1025 and 1063.
- 38:39The game getting you ready for Preds hockey this weekend,
- 38:42including a home game against the Blue Jackets on Saturday
- 38:46night. Final segment here on the show
- 38:48this hour. My name is Max hers along with
- 38:51Kara Hammer. We are from Preds radio and
- 38:53Preds TV. Hammer We've had some fun
- 38:58moments in Smashville this week, headlined by the Predators first
- 39:01win. We've already played some great
- 39:03interviews for you, Zach LaRue, David Poyle, but I think our
- 39:07interview of the week was actually a pretty easy choice
- 39:10from Luke Shen on Preds Radio talking about the goal he scored
- 39:15last weekend and who inspired him to shoot the Dang puck.
- 39:20Yeah, yeah. I mean, he did a great job
- 39:22creating a little traffic there in front and it was a really
- 39:24nice pass by O'Reilly and little little sauce pass where that guy
- 39:27stick. And in that moment I just I
- 39:30thought to myself, what would Hal Gill do in that moment and
- 39:32just slick it to the nuts. So that was my my Hal Gill
- 39:35impression there. It always comes back to Skillzy.
- 39:41Even though you took, you just told me earlier in the podcast,
- 39:44Skillzy had no goals in gold. No, Luke is already winning
- 39:48there. He was already winning through
- 39:50the whole summer with a big Uno last season over Hal Gill and we
- 39:55made sure to make fun of how for that.
- 39:57But yeah, how? How funny is it Kara?
- 39:59We have 3 esteemed former Preds who are analysts on TV and
- 40:03radio. Between the three of them, they
- 40:06have one goal scored for the Preds in their playing careers
- 40:09and it was scored by the goalie Chris Mason.
- 40:12Hal and Jay both didn't have any.
- 40:16Noted goal scorer Chris Mason. Yeah, we might be a A defense
- 40:20first team if our broadcast team had hit the ice.
- 40:22Based on that logic, you might have to do all our goal scoring.
- 40:26Well, you know, defence wins championships.
- 40:29Defence does win championships and we have a big Preds fan
- 40:33goalie who I guess we're going to keep shouting out on every
- 40:35episode for the rest of time. Last episode we talked about 6
- 40:38year old goalie Wells who took the ice with UC Soros for the
- 40:42national anthem at a game last week.
- 40:45His picture went nuts on Twitter because it was an adorable
- 40:47picture and Wells and his dad came to the game on Tuesday
- 40:51night, printed out the picture, put it on a sign on the glass at
- 40:55warmups, and UC Soros had the sign sent to him in the tunnel
- 41:00and signed it while he was warming up for a game he was
- 41:04starting. Most goalies, like, will not pay
- 41:07attention to anything outside of their bubble while they're
- 41:10getting ready to start a game. UC Soros more than happy to
- 41:14oblige. Can I just highlight how focused
- 41:19the guys are when they come out? So how big of a deal this is is,
- 41:23You know, I do the, the skate up interview and the players are
- 41:26told right before they come out a reminder.
- 41:28They're always asked in the morning, hey, can you go do the
- 41:31skate up interview? Then they're reminded when they
- 41:33walk out. Then Max players come out and
- 41:36they forget because the second thing hit the ice.
- 41:38They are thinking about the game.
- 41:39They are focused on warmups. That's where their focus is.
- 41:43So it's super cool to to see Soros notice the sign and sign
- 41:48it. And then what I think we were
- 41:50deciding was that it has a T-shirt.
- 41:51Whatever they throw out when you're a first star.
- 41:54He gave it to Wells. He gave it to Wells, who did
- 41:57have seats near the bench for the game.
- 41:59He was waiting down there with his goalie mask, and UC Soros
- 42:02made his big button hook to wave it.
- 42:04Everybody then came down the tunnel and I thought, Kara, he
- 42:07was going to snub your interview like you're talking about.
- 42:09It looked like he was going down the tunnel, but it was because
- 42:11he had spotted Wells and wanted to hand him the hat as his
- 42:15little goalie idol. So cool, so cool.
- 42:19Yeah, so awesome. And I was able to talk to Wells
- 42:22and his dad for a little bit before the game.
- 42:25His dad said that. So Wells is in first grade.
- 42:27He's six years old and he's the only person on his team who even
- 42:32wanted to try goalie and he never wants to play any other
- 42:36position. Really.
- 42:39So now we've got a lifelong memory for goalie, one of these
- 42:436 year old preds. Not sure what year Wells is
- 42:46draft eligible, either 2036 or 2035.
- 42:49We'll have to check his birth certificate to get him eligible
- 42:52for the right year. But yeah, that's a future Pred
- 42:54in the making, and a memory made no matter what.
- 42:58I love it, I love it. Yeah, really cool stuff in
- 43:01Smashville. That's what happens when you win
- 43:03a game. The fun stuff starts right in
- 43:05itself. Preds are one and five trying to
- 43:07dig out of a hole. And Speaking of digging, the
- 43:11Predators changed their winning player of the game handout in
- 43:16the room. It was supposed to be something
- 43:18else and they changed it to like a little shovel because it's
- 43:22time to dig the bleep in. Roman Yossi says at O and Five.
- 43:27And Zach LaRue was the player of the game for win #1 and
- 43:31hopefully he will be giving out the shovel after game #2 this
- 43:34weekend. Which hopefully comes tonight
- 43:38against the Chicago Blackhawks. All right, those of you who are
