- 0:11Hello, friends. It's Sean.
- 0:14Here it is Wednesday. It is the beginning of a new
- 0:18year. A pinch and a punch for the
- 0:20first day of the year. Is that a thing?
- 0:23A shout and a cheer for the first day of the year, perhaps?
- 0:26Welcome to 2025. So lovely that you and I get to
- 0:30start this year together, friend.
- 0:32Yeah, that's what we're doing, reading God's word at the start
- 0:36of this year. I hope that 2025 is going to
- 0:40open up with so much possibility, so much opportunity
- 0:45for you to experience God's provision, God's love, and God's
- 0:51presence in your life. And I'm so grateful that you are
- 0:55sharing this journey with me in this little way that we have
- 0:58each day, with a little bit of God's incredible word shaping
- 1:03you and shaping me as we go about our lives.
- 1:08I hope that today is a day of recovery and rest and thinking
- 1:13about what is to come as we begin this new chapter of our
- 1:18lives. Not just Chapter 4, First Kings,
- 1:20but this new chapter of this year and this month.
- 1:24And of course, we are going to keep on reading First Kings.
- 1:28And we today hear about Solomon's prosperity and his
- 1:33wisdom as he goes on living this incredibly successful life.
- 1:39Before we get to that, we've got a list of names that I will read
- 1:43as best I can and then we will go from there.
- 1:47Our friend. Great to have your company.
- 1:49Let us read together this chapter first.
- 1:51Kings, chapter 4. King Solomon now ruled over all
- 2:05Israel and these were his high officials.
- 2:09Azariah, son of Zadok was the priest Eli Whoref and Elijah,
- 2:14the sons of Shisha, were court secretaries.
- 2:17Jehoshaphat, son of Ahilid, was the royal historian.
- 2:22Banaya, son of Jehoiada, was commander of the army.
- 2:26Zadok and Abiatha were priests. Azariah, son of Nathan, was in
- 2:31charge of the district governors.
- 2:33Zabid, son of Nathan, a priest, was a trusted advisor to the
- 2:37king. Ahisha was manager of the palace
- 2:41property. Adaniram, son of Abda, was in
- 2:44charge of forced labour. Solomon also had 12 district
- 2:48governors who were all over Israel.
- 2:51They were responsible for providing food for the King's
- 2:54household. Each of them arranged provisions
- 2:56for one month of the year. These are the names of the 12
- 3:00governors Ben Hur in the Hill Country of Ephraim, Ben Decker
- 3:07in Maccas, Shalbim Beth Shemesh and Ilon, Bethanan Ben Hesed in
- 3:14Araboth, including Soko and all the land of Hefa Ben Abinadab in
- 3:21all of Nephoth Dor. He was married to Tafeth. 1 of
- 3:25Solomon's daughters, Baina son of a hylid in Tarnak and Megido,
- 3:31all of Bethshan near Zarathan below Jezreel, and all the
- 3:35territory from Bethshan to Abel. Mahola and Ova Jokmim Ben Gibber
- 3:43in Ramoth. Gilead, including the towns of
- 3:45Jaya, named for Jaya of the tribe of Banasa in Gilead, and
- 3:51in Aghab region of Bashan, including sixty large fortified
- 3:55towns with bronze bars on their gates.
- 3:58Ahinadab son of Ido in Mahaneem, Ahimaz in Naftali.
- 4:05He was married to Basimath. Another of Solomon's daughters,
- 4:09Bana son of Hushai in Asha and in Aleth, Jehoshaphat son of
- 4:16Pura in Issachar, Shimei son of Ilah in Benjamin, Gaber son of
- 4:24Uri In the land of Gilead, including the territories of
- 4:27King Saihon of the Amorites and King OG of Bashan.
- 4:32There was also one governor over the land of Judah.
- 4:37The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on
- 4:41the seashore. They were very contented with
- 4:45plenty to eat and drink. Solomon ruled over all the
- 4:49kingdoms from the Euphrates River in the north to the land
- 4:52of the Philistines and the border of Egypt in the South.
- 4:56The conquered people of those lands sent tribute money to
- 4:59Solomon and continued to serve him throughout his lifetime.
- 5:03The daily food requirements for Solomon's palace were 150
- 5:07bushels of choice flour and 300 bushels of meal.
- 5:12Also 10 oxen from the fatting pens, 20 pasture fed cattle, 100
- 5:18sheep or goats, as well as deer, gazelles, Roe deer and choice
- 5:22poultry. Solomon's dominion extended over
- 5:27all the kingdoms West of the Euphrates River from Tipsa to
- 5:31Gaza and there was peace on all his borders.
- 5:36During the lifetime of Solomon, all of Judah and Israel lived in
- 5:41peace and safety, and from Dan in the north to Beersheba in the
- 5:46South, each family had its own home and garden.
- 5:51Solomon had 4000 stalls for his chariot horses and he had 12,000
- 5:57horses. The district governors
- 5:59faithfully provided food for King Solomon and his court.
- 6:03Each made sure nothing was lacking during the month
- 6:06assigned to him. They also brought the necessary
- 6:09barley and straw for the royal horses in the stables.
- 6:14God gave Solomon very great wisdom and understanding and
- 6:19knowledge as vast as the sands of the seashore.
- 6:22In fact, his wisdom exceeded that of all the wise men of the
- 6:26East and the wise men of Egypt. He was wiser than anyone else,
- 6:32including Ethan, the Ezraite, and the sons of Mayhol, Hemen,
- 6:37Calcot and Dada. His fame spread throughout all
- 6:42the surrounding nations, and he composed some 3000 proverbs and
- 6:47wrote 1005 songs. He could speak with authority
- 6:52about all kinds of plants, from the great cedar of Lebanon to
- 6:57the tiny hyssop that grows from cracks in a wall.
- 7:01He could also speak about animals, birds, small creatures
- 7:04and fish. And kings from every nation sent
- 7:08their ambassadors to listen to the wisdom of Solomon.
- 7:22Ah, Lord, we just see a glimpse of your splendour in what you
- 7:27have given Solomon. You are not a God who is living
- 7:33through wartime rations. No, you are a God of lavish rule
- 7:38and love and provision for your children.
- 7:42And we live with such great anticipation for the day when we
- 7:46will see you face to face and you will invite us to live with
- 7:51you in your restored creation, where you will lavish your
- 7:57goodness and Your provision on us without the context of this
- 8:02broken world around us. How you are a good and loving
- 8:07God. And we thank you that we live,
- 8:10exist and move in the palm of your hand, and that every day we
- 8:16come one day nearer to that day, when we come finally into our
- 8:21eternal rest in your arms, Your lavish arms of love, acceptance
- 8:27and forgiveness. So we just praise you, our
- 8:31magnificent God, and pray all of these things in the name of your
- 8:35Son Jesus, Amen.
