Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: We want to take you now back to the Ukrainian
- 0:02Speaker 1: capital of Kiev, where CBS News International reporter Aidan Stretch
- 0:06Speaker 1: is speaking to Kraine's President Voldemir Zelensky after Moscow launched
- 0:10Speaker 1: some significant strikes on the capitol. Let's listen in he.
- 0:23Speaker 2: Will you so right now they're telling us that this
- 0:42Speaker 2: president is telling us that Putin's in a weak position
- 0:44Speaker 2: and that he needs to be stronger. Mister president.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Was a probably probably.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 1:00Speaker 4: You with Lascaza Patania Anlesko's the CBS News. We've heard
- 1:07Speaker 4: you ask repeatedly for more ballistic defenses from the United States.
- 1:12Speaker 4: You said yesterday that nearly half of the missiles used
- 1:15Speaker 4: were ballistic missiles. Have you received a response from the
- 1:18Speaker 4: United States for those asks.
- 1:21Speaker 5: We are thankful for the program, thankful to European team.
- 1:27Speaker 5: They pay for this, and they paid already and now
- 1:30Speaker 5: we have some packages of w yeah, and with Europe
- 1:33Speaker 5: and Canada and other partners, and we're thankful to American
- 1:37Speaker 5: team for transfer of these missiles. But for today it's
- 1:43Speaker 5: too slow, be honest, too slow. Of course, I count
- 1:47Speaker 5: on the meeting with the American team. During closest days,
- 1:52Speaker 5: we'll see.
- 1:52Speaker 1: What will be.
- 1:53Speaker 5: We don't know what which you will do and what
- 1:56Speaker 5: how will be the all the plans of our meetings and.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Etcetera.
- 2:03Speaker 5: But what the most important And of course we're asking
- 2:06Speaker 5: President Trump his team. Yes, Rush, that's only one thing,
- 2:14Speaker 5: and we don't need you know too much words you
- 2:17Speaker 5: see what does it mean when the packages come to
- 2:21Speaker 5: Ukraine slowly? This is a big problem because these people
- 2:25Speaker 5: lost not only their apartments, This is a problem to
- 2:29Speaker 5: lose your whole, your house. They lost their children, their families,
- 2:34Speaker 5: their life. And I think this is the problem, not
- 2:38Speaker 5: the problem how to push missiles quickly?
- 2:41Speaker 1: They have to work.
- 2:42Speaker 5: I'm so sorry. I understand that the right a lot
- 2:45Speaker 5: of internal questions in the United States, and I know
- 2:49Speaker 5: in Europe and all Europe, all Europe, the United States,
- 2:56Speaker 5: a lot of different countries live from elections to elections.
- 3:00Speaker 5: US very understandable, but please, the priority is to save lives,
- 3:05Speaker 5: Ukrainian lives.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Whenhen's the last time that you heard from Steve Wikoff,
- 3:09Speaker 2: Jared Kushner or another member of the president's team, and
- 3:12Speaker 2: do you expect them to re engage with negotiations soon.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Yesterday was a conversation between I think oumrav and Kush yes,
- 3:24Speaker 5: and the day before, yesterday and etc.
- 3:27Speaker 1: So I mean this.
- 3:32Speaker 5: They said weeks or I don't know, may months ago
- 3:37Speaker 5: that they will come to Ukraine. They have to come
- 3:40Speaker 5: to see to understand and to explain to president and
- 3:46Speaker 5: then to answer in a very polite manner, how Steve
- 3:51Speaker 5: Wilkov ken to Russia? What they what they have to
- 3:55Speaker 5: do quickly see Nigashi stop this war. And that's why
- 4:01Speaker 5: we wanted them to come to us as I think
- 4:05Speaker 5: quite a long period of times. I hope that they
- 4:07Speaker 5: will come. Yes, and I understand that there are challenges
- 4:12Speaker 5: in the Middle East. As I said, we are thankful
- 4:15Speaker 5: for their position that they want to help and et cetera.
- 4:18Speaker 1: But we need more more than words.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Mister President, would you say that Ukraine is winning this war?
- 4:28Speaker 5: Ukraine Russia is losing. Ukrainians will win this war, and
- 4:39Speaker 5: I'm sure, and but to win is you know, it's
- 4:46Speaker 5: such such difficult question. If the question is fight many
- 4:54Speaker 5: years to win or to stop tomorrow this war, all
- 4:58Speaker 5: our people me of course, we will choose stop the ward.
- 5:02Speaker 5: That's why we're asking that, That's why we're asking our
- 5:07Speaker 5: partners more treasure in puting stop this war because he's
- 5:12Speaker 5: not winning, because he is losing. At the end of
- 5:15Speaker 5: the days, he will lose everything. That's why it's also
- 5:19Speaker 5: in his interest between us. I'm not thinking about his interests.
- 5:23Speaker 2: It's yeah, okay, allusion.
- 5:30Speaker 6: All right, Aiden, Aiden stretched, there are correspondent in Kiev
- 5:38Speaker 6: speaking there directly with President Voldemar Zelensky in Kiev. There
- 5:43Speaker 6: you saw Aiden in real time asking President voldemir's Olinsky
- 5:46Speaker 6: some very key questions, including whether or not President Zelensky
- 5:50Speaker 6: had heard from the special envoys Steve Whitkoff and Jared
- 5:54Speaker 6: Kushner or any member of the Trump administration.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And if you're just joining us now, Aiden is reporting
- 5:59Speaker 1: live from Kiev in the wake of those devastating strikes
- 6:02Speaker 1: by Russia on the Ukrainian capital. What else did Zelnisky
- 6:06Speaker 1: have to say to you.
- 6:07Speaker 7: Aiden, Well, I think one thing that struck me and
- 6:12Speaker 7: struck all of us here is that he kept motioning
- 6:15Speaker 7: as he was speaking to the apartment behind him. He's,
- 6:19Speaker 7: of course, I was asking him diplomatic questions, and he
- 6:23Speaker 7: said those are far less important than what you can
- 6:25Speaker 7: do if you're an American or you anybody else and
- 6:28Speaker 7: you come here and you see the life lost and
- 6:30Speaker 7: the destruction in the wake of these attacks. The other
- 6:33Speaker 7: thing that he said is that he continues to request
- 6:35Speaker 7: defenses against ballistic missiles. Nearly half of the missiles used
- 6:40Speaker 7: last night, there were seventy four of them, nearly half
- 6:42Speaker 7: of them were ballistic missiles, and Ukraine does not have
- 6:45Speaker 7: a reliable defense against those except for patriot air defense interceptors,
- 6:50Speaker 7: which are only manufactured in the United States in a
- 6:52Speaker 7: handful of other countries, and he's saying he needs more.
- 6:57Speaker 3: All right, Aidan, really appreciate you bringing us that and
- 7:01Speaker 3: excellent reporting. I know it is not easy in those
- 7:04Speaker 3: situations to get your question in. You were able to
- 7:08Speaker 3: keep President Zelensky for quite some time. Really appreciate it.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Yeah, aid an excellent job, and I think a yeah,
- 7:15Speaker 1: that was excellent reporting by Aiden Stretch there in.
- 7:18Speaker 6: Kiev and Kelly.
- 7:19Speaker 1: The thing that struck me is in listening to President
- 7:22Speaker 1: Zelenski two points one. He alluded to the fact that
- 7:27Speaker 1: whilst he is thankful for the support that the United
- 7:29Speaker 1: States and Canada and the countries who have been supporting
- 7:34Speaker 1: Ukraine's three year effort to try and at least end
- 7:38Speaker 1: this war, if not outright defeat the Russian military. Is
- 7:42Speaker 1: that we live in a world of election cycles, and
- 7:47Speaker 1: those election cycles mean that for the American people, and
- 7:50Speaker 1: by that very nature are elected officials, that their attentions
- 7:54Speaker 1: can vary from cycle to cycle, from month to month,
- 7:58Speaker 1: from quarter to quarter, depending on what's happening economically. And
- 8:02Speaker 1: for the Ukrainians, they don't have the luxury of thinking
- 8:04Speaker 1: about an election or thinking about the midterms or even
- 8:07Speaker 1: twenty twenty eight. They're in this every single day. The
- 8:09Speaker 1: other thing that I thought was interesting is the Ukrainians
- 8:13Speaker 1: have been launching missile strikes into Russia, the idea being
- 8:16Speaker 1: that perhaps the Russian people will have enough economic and
- 8:22Speaker 1: military pain inflicted on them that they pressure Vladimir Putin
- 8:25Speaker 1: to end the war. But in that scenario, it feels
- 8:27Speaker 1: that Putin is in a more stable position than perhaps
- 8:29Speaker 1: Selenski is.
- 8:30Speaker 3: And look what I'm about to say, it might be
- 8:32Speaker 3: an unpopular statement that while we are obviously touched by
- 8:37Speaker 3: the devastation, there's another part of this where you know,
- 8:41Speaker 3: these countries, the US included, have to consider whether continuing
- 8:45Speaker 3: to support four years sending more and more that perhaps
- 8:50Speaker 3: it's more about the negotiations versus pouring more money and
- 8:54Speaker 3: more resources. It is, you know, caught between a rock
- 8:58Speaker 3: and a hard place. But the President has been very
- 9:01Speaker 3: clear it is America first, and that is something that
- 9:04Speaker 3: he has led with. And so you know, you hear
- 9:07Speaker 3: presidents Lensky ask for those weapons, for the money, for
- 9:10Speaker 3: the ability to fight back against Russia. And I can
- 9:14Speaker 3: imagine some of those conversations may be hard of how
- 9:17Speaker 3: do you keep going there if there isn't meaningful movement?
- 9:21Speaker 3: And that's why you expect those negotiations to be perhaps
- 9:25Speaker 3: where they can achieve something.
- 9:26Speaker 1: And what's clear is that whilst the President has lauded
- 9:29Speaker 1: his connection, his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, that
- 9:33Speaker 1: has not worn any fruit here in trying to end
- 9:36Speaker 1: this war. All right again, Aiden Stretch reporting from Kiev.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Those are live pictures you're seeing there of President's Olenski
- 9:44Speaker 1: touring the damage after devastating Russian strikes overnight in the
- 9:47Speaker 1: Ukrainian capital of Kiev. Aiden still on the ground. I'm
- 9:50Speaker 1: sure he'll be reporting all throughout the day. You're on
- 9:52Speaker 1: CBS News twenty four to seven
