Transcript
- 0:00Have you planned out your career intentionally or
- 0:02has it happened by chance?
- 0:04If you're like most people, you've taken opportunities as they've come rather
- 0:08than intentionally deciding where you want to go and what you'll need to
- 0:11get there before setting your goals.
- 0:13I have to admit that in my career, I tried to plan things out, but it
- 0:16never quite went as well as I planned.
- 0:18And that's because I didn't know what it would take to get there
- 0:21or how to access these resources.
- 0:23But now that's exactly what we help our clients do.
- 0:25And we have created a career map that you can follow yourself to
- 0:29create your own path forward.
- 0:31In this episode, Sister Smart coach, Sarah Spencer, and I are talking
- 0:35about how to develop your career plan.
- 0:37So you're going to want to stay with us because we'll be taking
- 0:39you through our 12 step process to map out your career trajectory.
- 0:44I'm Jill Avey, a career success coach, and this is Sister Smart Leadership, the
- 0:49show that explores how women can rise from director to vice president and beyond
- 0:54by fully leaning into their feminine energy as their biggest advantage.
- 0:58Let's get you one step closer to the recognition and promotion you deserve.
- 1:03It's important to map out your career journey because when you simply take
- 1:07opportunities as they come, you can end up in a place that you never
- 1:10wanted to be by the end of your career.
- 1:12And I've worked with clients in this situation, and it can be disheartening
- 1:16to think that you have worked so hard only to end up in a place that's
- 1:19unfulfilling because it's not aligned with your values and your skill set.
- 1:23So instead of following your own direction, you did what others do.
- 1:27A better situation would be to be intentional about what will make a
- 1:32successful and fulfilling career.
- 1:34So we're here to help you avoid that unhappy situation by
- 1:37charting out your direction today.
- 1:39Sarah, will you please let give us a start on the first few
- 1:43steps of this process that we have called the career map?
- 1:46Yeah, I'd love to.
- 1:48So the first step is to reflect on the past year and although it can be
- 1:53tempting, to run ahead and you've got so much on your plate and you already
- 1:59know you've got a lot coming up.
- 2:00It's best to reflect on what we've done because that's where we're really going
- 2:05to learn about how did we use our time?
- 2:08How far have we come?
- 2:10What have we accomplished?
- 2:12How did I feel about what I accomplished?
- 2:15Am I satisfied with what I've accomplished?
- 2:18So give yourself some time to, take a step back and reflect on your year and then
- 2:23the next step is after you take a moment to reflect is to interpret it, right?
- 2:29And you want to look back through your annual review.
- 2:32What feedback did you get?
- 2:34What was said or what was not said?
- 2:38And how would you interpret that, right?
- 2:41The positives and the opportunities or the negatives, right?
- 2:46So what do you appreciate about the feedback that you were given?
- 2:49Dan Sullivan talks about the gap and the gain.
- 2:53And we want to focus in on also the things that we've gained in the
- 2:58last year versus what we don't have.
- 3:01And so that way that we, we can build our self confidence, build our self
- 3:05esteem, and just really, appreciate the work that we've done as well.
- 3:10And then we also want to look at those criticisms Do we even
- 3:13want to do anything with them?
- 3:15So it's a really good opportunity to reflect and interpret.
- 3:18So those first two steps are critical.
- 3:21I was just laughing when you were talking about interpreting your review because I
- 3:25see so many of our clients that just hone in on that one thing that somebody said
- 3:30that was negative and they forget the whole rest, the other 98 percent of the
- 3:34positive things that were in their review.
- 3:36And so it's such an important step to really stop and analyze that review and
- 3:41see all the good things that somebody said about you and really take those in because
- 3:47it's so often that we don't do that.
- 3:49And then the third step is to get yourself into that state of
- 3:53dreaming about your aspirations.
- 3:55So this is a crucial step to push yourself beyond your limits, right?
- 3:59Is to take some time to actually get into the prefrontal cortex and to
- 4:04dream about those possibilities, right?
- 4:08And And to just be in that dream creative state so that new thinking
- 4:13and new ideas can come forward.
- 4:17And then we want to take it to the next step where we're defining our career path.
- 4:22Map out what are those next few steps in your career and how could you get there?
- 4:27It's one thing to dream, and then it's one to start putting it into concrete actions.
- 4:34To just map out those first few steps.
- 4:36So how our clients use this career map process is they either use it
- 4:41at the end of the year to map out their new year, or they use it during
- 4:46their personal strategy retreat.
- 4:48So the personal strategy retreat is something that we
- 4:50do in our Sister Smart program.
- 4:53Where people take a couple of days away to really have time to reflect and decide
- 4:57what it is that they want for their lives.
- 4:59And so this will help them in that process.
- 5:02And then they also follow that up with quarterly retreats that are just a couple
- 5:06hours, but then you can also go back and reflect through this process at each
- 5:10one of those quarterly retreats as well.
- 5:13Once you've done all of that process, now you're ready to think
- 5:16about your career in general.
- 5:19So we've got the 6 elements of a good career plan.
- 5:22And the first onw is your people element.
- 5:24So this is who is it that you need on your team to be able
- 5:29to get to where you want to go?
- 5:30When you've got your career path defined, you're going to much
- 5:35more easily be able to see who it is that you'll need on the way.
- 5:40And so that might be people to teach you something, to introduce
- 5:44you to others, to encourage you and cheer you on those kinds of people.
- 5:49Nobody gets to the top alone.
- 5:51And so we, we always need to be surrounded by people, but being intentional about
- 5:55the types of people that you might need to meet or that relationships that you
- 6:00want to deepen can be really important.
- 6:02Our next element is time.
- 6:05Time is our most precious resource, I think, for anyone.
- 6:08It's more important than any of our other resources because it's,
- 6:12in such short supply these days.
- 6:14And so how we use our time and being really intentional about the things that
- 6:19we're putting on our plate versus taking off of our plate is really important.
- 6:23And this is a great time to think about taking things off the plate and what
- 6:29are you not going to spend your time on?
- 6:31That is usually one of the biggest things that we can do to make
- 6:33an impact on our careers is to decide what we're not going to do.
- 6:37And that allows us to focus in on the things that we do want to do, that we
- 6:41really want to optimize and be great at.
- 6:44So our next element is the skills element.
- 6:47So what are the skills that you need?
- 6:50You really take a good look at the skill set that you have now and the skill set
- 6:54that you'll need for that next step in your career and the next step beyond that.
- 6:59And our next element is the energy element, because I think after time,
- 7:04energy is our next most finite resource.
- 7:06So how are you taking care of your energy?
- 7:08Are you taking care of your wellbeing by getting enough sleep and eating well and
- 7:13exercising well and taking enough breaks?
- 7:16One of the biggest impacts on our energy can be actually downtime and
- 7:21allowing ourselves to rejuvenate.
- 7:23So that's a really great thing to stop and take a look at what, what needs to
- 7:28be shifted or optimized in that category.
- 7:32And then our next element is thinking.
- 7:34As we rise up the ladder, we are more and more hired to do the job
- 7:40for our brains and our thinking power, yet that is something that
- 7:44we often don't put a lot of time to.
- 7:46So the higher up you go, the more time you need for thinking and the more you
- 7:50need to hone your thinking patterns and habits and the different decision
- 7:54models you use and things like that.
- 7:56So this is often something that needs some attention in people's careers.
- 8:00And then our final element is the personal element.
- 8:03All leaders are only as good as they're leading themselves.
- 8:07And so how much are you investing in yourself and developing
- 8:11your own emotional development?
- 8:13and your interpersonal skills.
- 8:15And as well as, the big one is really our knowledge of ourselves because we
- 8:20continually grow and shift and change.
- 8:22And so we really need to continue to on that journey of self discovery
- 8:27to, to, be keeping up with all of the changes that we're experiencing
- 8:32as we go through our lives.
- 8:33And then where do we take it from there, Sarah?
- 8:35So after you finish those steps, the next step is looking forward.
- 8:38So we want to take some time to envision the next year and think
- 8:43through what do you want to reach for?
- 8:45What do you want to aspire to be or to have or what role you desire to be in?
- 8:53So this is that time to visualize, right?
- 8:56What maybe in that role, what would you be wearing?
- 9:00Who would you be with?
- 9:01So take some time to really visualize and get into that prefrontal cortex
- 9:08where you're dreaming about what is that next year and what is up
- 9:12to three years look like, right?
- 9:14Cause one year could be, maybe it's too short and we want to look
- 9:17out over the next three years.
- 9:19And there is some research that was done regarding visualization in sports.
- 9:25I know we, we talk a lot, Jill, about the positive intelligence program
- 9:29and Sherzod speaks to the research study that was done on the basketball
- 9:34players, the basketball team that was wanting to improve their free throws.
- 9:39So they had three groups, one group visualized every day for 30 days,
- 9:44them getting those free throws in.
- 9:47The next group practiced every day, and the third group did nothing.
- 9:52Everything just stayed the same.
- 9:53And so the results that they saw with the group that was visualizing
- 9:57is that they improved 24%.
- 10:00just from visualizing for 30 days, then getting those free throws in.
- 10:05Isn't that amazing?
- 10:06And the group that practiced, they improved by 23%.
- 10:10So that's all the details I've heard from that study, but I just feel like that is
- 10:14just so fascinating that practicing and visualizing had such a similar impact.
- 10:21And what if you did both, right?
- 10:23You're visualizing that next year and then because the next step
- 10:29is what is your commitment and that's putting it into practice.
- 10:32So put that plan to paper and set your goals for the next year
- 10:37and even out to three years.
- 10:39And so then you're doing both, right?
- 10:40And so how powerful that is and supporting what it is that you want to move forward.
- 10:46And Jill, anything else you want to add to those final two very important steps?
- 10:52I'd love to add that on the Sister Smart website, we have a goal setting
- 10:56guide that you can, it's a video guide that you can download for free and go
- 11:01through our method for setting goals.
- 11:03We use a little different method than just your typical smart goals.
- 11:07We use what's called ends goals and means goals so that it really creates a way for
- 11:12you to set goals that become fulfilling for you instead of feeling like you're
- 11:16on a goal treadmill and just checking off more and more things to accomplish.
- 11:20So that can just feel exhausting sometimes people aren't sure how
- 11:25they ended up where they ended up, when they set too many smart goals.
- 11:28So that's a piece that I think is really a valuable guide
- 11:32that we have on the website.
- 11:34So I'll put a link in the show notes to that as well.
- 11:37So we'd like to end each show with three shifts that you can make today.
- 11:42So your first shift is to download the 12 step checklist that we just covered
- 11:48and it's linked in the show notes below.
- 11:51And you'll probably also want to get the full workbook.
- 11:53It's available for $7, which will take you through each one of these 12
- 11:57steps with journaling prompts to help you think through each one of them.
- 12:01So you can really just sit down with the whole workbook and go through
- 12:04this entire process step by step.
- 12:07And the next shift will be to actually do that to take this checklist and
- 12:11workbook and plan out your next year, whether you're, whenever you're listening
- 12:15to this, you can start your year from right now and plan out what you want
- 12:19to see happen for yourself in this next year and in the next three years.
- 12:24And then this will get you ready for the final shift, which will be to choose
- 12:27three or four goals to get started on now.
- 12:30So which step resonates with you most?
- 12:32If you're watching this on YouTube, please share your thoughts in the comments.
- 12:36We'd love to hear which one of these you'd really like to work on and
- 12:40then head on over the show notes to download your free checklist and
- 12:43the Sister Smart career map guide.
