- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome to another episode of Not Another Football Podcast with myself,
- 0:07Speaker 1: Simon Donnelly and Jackie McNamara and we're delighted that we
- 0:11Speaker 1: have the one and only George Bowie with us today.
- 0:13Speaker 2: He doesn't know that much about football so that's going
- 0:16Speaker 2: to be interesting, that's going to be exciting. How are
- 0:18Speaker 2: you doing? I'm good guys, nice to see you both.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Everything good?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Everything's great. My mum's got the right thing for Jackie,
- 0:25Speaker 2: she's going to be buzzing that I'm on this by
- 0:27Speaker 2: the way. She loves Jackie a bit.
- 0:29Speaker 3: I assume you would be the older ladies and grannies.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Well, this is my mum jacket. Back in the day,
- 0:35Speaker 2: it was the mums and the grannies.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Is that a jacket thing or a Celtic thing?
- 0:41Speaker 1: It's a jacket thing.
- 0:42Speaker 2: I'm not sure it's supposed to be a Celtic thing,
- 0:44Speaker 2: but it's a jacket thing. My dad was a Rangers fan,
- 0:46Speaker 2: my mum was a Celtic fan. That's why I became
- 0:48Speaker 2: a Morton fan. I didn't want to get involved. You're
- 0:50Speaker 2: a big Morton fan. Just keep out of it, exactly. Well,
- 0:53Speaker 2: I would say big, but I used to have a
- 0:54Speaker 2: season ticket, but I stopped one a few years ago.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I used to go to my pal's. And it was just,
- 1:00Speaker 2: it was good fun. We all went together and then
- 1:02Speaker 2: there was less and less of us going in and
- 1:04Speaker 2: suddenly it was just like two or three of us
- 1:06Speaker 2: and we all just kind of thought.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Difficult times now for Mark, eh?
- 1:09Speaker 2: I'm just struggling really badly. I'm just going to the manager.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Do you have values? No, I'm going the right way, Ian.
- 1:15Speaker 3: I like him, but as you said, I'd spoke to
- 1:17Speaker 3: him in the summer and he did say that they
- 1:21Speaker 3: were going to really struggle.
- 1:22Speaker 2: I think their sponsor went with financial problems or something
- 1:26Speaker 2: like that, right? And it's just, aye.
- 1:28Speaker 3: It's a good club though, I mean, I used to
- 1:30Speaker 3: go and watch Morton when my dad was assistant manager
- 1:33Speaker 3: with Alan Lebrun.
- 1:35Speaker 2: He was some boy, Alan Lebrun. He was great, he
- 1:36Speaker 2: was a gentleman. We were in the Premier League at
- 1:38Speaker 2: the time. Third oldest club in Scotland, I think.
- 1:40Speaker 1: That's what I was about to say, a bit of
- 1:42Speaker 1: history behind the club, isn't it? So hopefully they can
- 1:44Speaker 1: get through it, but difficult times for them.
- 1:46Speaker 2: Yeah, a lot of clubs are feeling that, but Morton,
- 1:48Speaker 2: what's on there? Aye, we're not staying up, that's for sure. But,
- 1:52Speaker 2: what it is?
- 1:53Speaker 1: You never know. So, 38 years at Clyde.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Long time.
- 1:58Speaker 1: Unbelievable. How did you start there? Can you remember everything?
- 2:01Speaker 2: I started behind the scenes. I mean, obviously you're in
- 2:04Speaker 2: there as well, so you'll know how it works. But
- 2:05Speaker 2: as I started, my first shift was I was answering
- 2:08Speaker 2: the phones on the open line. So I did that.
- 2:11Speaker 2: So I think I started about four in the afternoon
- 2:14Speaker 2: until six in the morning. That was my hours on
- 2:16Speaker 2: a Saturday. And I'd go in, answer the phone lines.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Who was doing the open line at that time then?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Um... It was, let me think, who was it? It
- 2:24Speaker 2: was after Jimmy Sanderson. I've never seen Jimmy Sanderson. Who
- 2:29Speaker 2: was doing it? Let me think.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Hugh.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Hugh was there. Paul Cooney was there. Paul was hosting.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Paul was hosting. And Derek Johnson. So it was basically
- 2:43Speaker 2: Hugh and Derek and Paul. It wasn't really like it
- 2:46Speaker 2: is now where it was different pundits all the time.
- 2:48Speaker 2: It was basically a mainstay of pundits. And they only
- 2:50Speaker 2: did the one show. They only did the Saturday show.
- 2:52Speaker 2: And that was it. Now you get something.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I remember listening to it in my bedroom years ago
- 2:56Speaker 1: to think then years later I'd be sitting there.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I know, being part of it. Mad. You were still
- 3:02Speaker 2: coming out with the same pattern.
- 3:03Speaker 1: So you just started doing the phones then?
- 3:05Speaker 2: Well, that was the start of my shift. And then
- 3:07Speaker 2: there would be an American chart on after it. So
- 3:09Speaker 2: I'd run the tapes on that for three hours. And
- 3:11Speaker 2: then we would do a show live from a nightclub.
- 3:14Speaker 2: So I would finish running the America's Chart Show and
- 3:17Speaker 2: then go out and set up a nightclub. And they
- 3:19Speaker 2: would have like Tiger Tim or Gary Marshall or Ross
- 3:22Speaker 2: King or one of these guys coming from a nightclub.
- 3:25Speaker 2: And then I would go back and they would, there
- 3:28Speaker 2: was a thing back then which people find hard to believe,
- 3:31Speaker 2: but it was generally true. They had this thing called
- 3:34Speaker 2: needle time. And you're only allowed to play, I think,
- 3:36Speaker 2: maybe six or seven hours of music a day. So
- 3:39Speaker 2: you had to find ways. And this was only up
- 3:41Speaker 2: until 1990. So it wasn't that long ago. You had
- 3:43Speaker 2: to find ways of padding out. And this, I mean,
- 3:48Speaker 2: it must have sounded terrible. They used to repeat the
- 3:50Speaker 2: commentary from Super Scoreboard.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Highlights?
- 3:53Speaker 2: Not even highlights, full commentary of a game. It could
- 3:56Speaker 2: be like Celtic and Hearts or Rangers and Hubs, you
- 3:59Speaker 2: know what I mean? And they'd play the full game,
- 4:01Speaker 2: the full commentary, because it would fill like 90 minutes
- 4:04Speaker 2: or whatever at 2 o'clock in the morning. So I
- 4:07Speaker 2: would need to go back and run that. Yeah. And
- 4:10Speaker 2: then they had an hour of classical music because that's
- 4:12Speaker 2: how they got around it. They were allowed to play
- 4:14Speaker 2: classical music if it was over a certain age, then
- 4:18Speaker 2: they didn't have to be needle time, whatever it's called.
- 4:21Speaker 2: And I had to run that. And my very first shift, apparently,
- 4:25Speaker 2: and I only found out weeks later, I played an
- 4:27Speaker 2: hour of classical music backwards because it was reel to reel. Yeah.
- 4:31Speaker 2: And somebody hadn't rewound the reel properly. And I just thought,
- 4:35Speaker 2: that man's going to notice. But it was five o'clock
- 4:38Speaker 2: in the morning, so nobody noticed. And by the time
- 4:41Speaker 2: they found out, I'd kind of settled in. So I
- 4:43Speaker 2: got to keep my job. I think if they'd found
- 4:44Speaker 2: out on the Monday, I probably wouldn't have been there.
- 4:47Speaker 2: But that was my baptism of fire at Radio Clyde.
- 4:50Speaker 1: So you were more the music then? You weren't wanting
- 4:54Speaker 1: to go down the sport line?
- 4:56Speaker 2: No, I never really wanted to go down the sport line,
- 4:58Speaker 2: I never fancied it, my son does, he works on
- 5:00Speaker 2: Super Scoreboard now as you know, but I was never
- 5:04Speaker 2: that big into football, I liked it but I was
- 5:06Speaker 2: never right into football, you know what I mean, the
- 5:09Speaker 2: way my boy is, and I was right into the music,
- 5:13Speaker 2: I always wanted to like, as a frustrated musician, I
- 5:16Speaker 2: always wanted to be in a band but I was
- 5:17Speaker 2: never good enough, you know what I mean, you could
- 5:19Speaker 2: play a Keyboard's a wee bit, bass a bit, and
- 5:22Speaker 2: guitar a bit, but never good enough to actually be
- 5:24Speaker 2: a musician. So I thought, I'll just play records. And now, ironically,
- 5:28Speaker 2: I make music because I've got my recording studio, so
- 5:31Speaker 2: we do tunes. But yeah, initially, I just wanted to
- 5:33Speaker 2: be a music DJ, which I think it's about, I've
- 5:37Speaker 2: described it before as a referee who's a frustrated footballer
- 5:40Speaker 2: who's never good enough to play. If you weren't good
- 5:42Speaker 2: enough to be in a band, you'd become a DJ. Right.
- 5:46Speaker 1: So obviously, then you get into that, and I mean,
- 5:48Speaker 1: 38 years... Time span is incredible there. So you must
- 5:52Speaker 1: have seen so many different artists through the years.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Aye, I've seen so many artists come and go and
- 5:59Speaker 2: so many changes in music and what have you. Just
- 6:02Speaker 2: the way radio is presented, you know what I mean?
- 6:04Speaker 2: It's just like, to still be hanging on there surprises me.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Have you had to.
- 6:09Speaker 3: Adapt with that, with the times as well? Things you
- 6:11Speaker 3: were okay to say 38 years ago, but not today.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Oh, all the time. Like even today, I can't remember
- 6:17Speaker 2: what I said, but I said something like, oh, can
- 6:19Speaker 2: I say that now? I was like, people say that
- 6:21Speaker 2: four years ago it's like it's crazy it's like oh
- 6:25Speaker 2: god if I listened to some of the shows I
- 6:27Speaker 2: did back in the early 90s I'd probably be cancelled
- 6:31Speaker 2: now you know what I mean because yeah times have
- 6:34Speaker 2: changed radio's changed it's and it's funny you're talking about
- 6:39Speaker 2: artists because there are people coming through that are coming
- 6:41Speaker 2: in as new artists that then become global superstars and
- 6:43Speaker 2: then disappear you know what I mean.
- 6:46Speaker 1: And I think that as well we were talking about
- 6:48Speaker 1: Cammie Barnes earlier on I think that's They have to
- 6:52Speaker 1: do things now to get themselves out, you know, little
- 6:54Speaker 1: bits on social media and stuff. Do you find that
- 6:57Speaker 1: now with the kind of soundbites on the radio, it's similar?
- 6:59Speaker 2: All the time. We're making wee videos like it used
- 7:01Speaker 2: to be you were just going to do a radio show.
- 7:04Speaker 2: Now there's a camera. Every time the mics are open,
- 7:07Speaker 2: a camera films you. And they'll sit and they'll edit
- 7:10Speaker 2: it up and they'll take wee bits off the show
- 7:12Speaker 2: and just do wee social contacts because that's what you've
- 7:15Speaker 2: got to do. That's the world we live in now.
- 7:16Speaker 2: That's fine. I've got no problem with that. It's fun.
- 7:19Speaker 2: if it's a good wee fun bit that people might
- 7:21Speaker 2: have missed on the radio and they'll see it you
- 7:23Speaker 2: know I've made a few mistakes live though oh aye
- 7:26Speaker 2: I make a lot of mistakes live but that's part
- 7:27Speaker 2: of the fun as well Jack you know what I
- 7:28Speaker 2: mean it's like it's not like when you guys are
- 7:31Speaker 2: playing football everything has to be 100% you can't make
- 7:33Speaker 2: a bad pass or whatever if we mess up then
- 7:37Speaker 2: it's fun it's almost like being in pantomime you know
- 7:40Speaker 2: what I mean it's part of the part of the
- 7:42Speaker 2: gag so it's good it's fun I really enjoy it
- 7:46Speaker 2: I would say and I've said this to a few
- 7:48Speaker 2: people recently I'm having more fun now than at any
- 7:51Speaker 2: point in my life I think it's because my kids
- 7:53Speaker 2: are all growing up and if they told me tomorrow
- 7:56Speaker 2: it's all over I'd be heartbroken but it wouldn't define
- 7:59Speaker 2: me whereas before it was oh my god I need
- 8:00Speaker 2: to be careful I don't want to lose my job
- 8:02Speaker 2: you know what I mean I've got a young family
- 8:03Speaker 2: and everything now I'm just I'm just going on and
- 8:06Speaker 2: just having fun and just doing it and it's great
- 8:08Speaker 2: and just enjoying it and working with a great.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Bunch of people and your studios as well we've.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Just moved to 100 Queen Street so it's overlooking the
- 8:15Speaker 2: Duke of Ellington statue which is about as Scottish as
- 8:18Speaker 2: you can get really so it's a great location to
- 8:21Speaker 2: be in and I live in the town so it's
- 8:22Speaker 2: handy and it's fun it's a squish and it's just
- 8:26Speaker 2: it's great it's a great job.
- 8:28Speaker 3: Have you ever thought about going to the TV.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Never fancied TV Jackie I'm not really fancied Get the
- 8:33Speaker 2: face up, tell you, I don't know.
- 8:35Speaker 1: You're on camera now anyway.
- 8:36Speaker 2: You're on camera now anyway. TV for me, I tried
- 8:39Speaker 2: a bit of it when I was younger and I
- 8:41Speaker 2: never enjoyed it because it was too controlled. Whereas radio,
- 8:45Speaker 2: you just go in and it's sporadic. You just open
- 8:47Speaker 2: up the microphone and you just go for it. I mean,
- 8:49Speaker 2: there's a bit of preparation goes in, but a lot
- 8:52Speaker 2: of it's just like, you just stand up on the
- 8:55Speaker 2: stage and tell your story, you know what I mean?
- 8:57Speaker 2: And that's what radio is. Whereas TV, it's all scripted. Right,
- 9:00Speaker 2: can we do that again? Can we do it from
- 9:02Speaker 2: a different angle? And radio is just life.
- 9:05Speaker 1: Off the cuff.
- 9:06Speaker 2: And it's fun and it's off the cuff. And I
- 9:08Speaker 2: know you get live TV shows with a few and
- 9:09Speaker 2: far between. And it just wasn't for me. I didn't
- 9:13Speaker 2: really enjoy it.
- 9:14Speaker 1: What about partners over the years? Obviously you get Cassie,
- 9:16Speaker 1: just different ones over the years.
- 9:18Speaker 2: Cassie just now, Siobhan, who you guys have had on
- 9:20Speaker 2: the show. She was great fun as well. You know
- 9:23Speaker 2: what I mean? Des McLean, the comedian, he used to
- 9:25Speaker 2: do stuff with me back in the day. That was
- 9:27Speaker 2: good fun. But it was a bit laddy, the two
- 9:28Speaker 2: of us. I think it was your show that Kaz
- 9:31Speaker 2: phoned me. Aye, because we had a forfeit. Yeah.
- 9:34Speaker 3: And I thought there was something wrong with her. I
- 9:36Speaker 3: don't know what to tell you about that. So she
- 9:38Speaker 3: phoned me. She said, hi, it's Kaz here. Omar Stuart McMillan,
- 9:42Speaker 3: her dad. He's passed away now, unfortunately. But at the time,
- 9:46Speaker 3: she says, oh, I'm Omar's daughter and start talking away.
- 9:49Speaker 3: And I said, how's your dad? And she said, oh,
- 9:50Speaker 3: he's no good now.
- 9:51Speaker 2: And But that was true. He was in a home
- 9:56Speaker 2: and he was deteriorating badly. I think you thought that
- 9:58Speaker 2: was a wind-up. I thought that. that wasn't a wind
- 10:01Speaker 2: up I can't remember what a wind up was you
- 10:03Speaker 2: don't remember?
- 10:04Speaker 3: I can't remember what a wind up was you tried
- 10:05Speaker 3: to get me to say something it was something bizarre
- 10:08Speaker 3: I'm like.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Sometimes they do it with songs it would be like
- 10:10Speaker 2: Oasis or something like that and you'd have to get
- 10:13Speaker 2: as many titles into them I've seen you do that
- 10:15Speaker 2: so I basically what happened was we used to do
- 10:17Speaker 2: this competition called Stop the Bus And you and Cameron
- 10:20Speaker 2: would host it. And me and Cassie would go up
- 10:23Speaker 2: against each other. So it'd be like, I'm trying to
- 10:27Speaker 2: think how we'd do it. It'd be like four towns
- 10:32Speaker 2: in the west of Scotland or something like that. And
- 10:35Speaker 2: you'd have to shout them out. And I used to
- 10:37Speaker 2: win every week. It had to have a forfeit for
- 10:41Speaker 2: the loser, and poor Cassie almost had to do the forfeit.
- 10:43Speaker 2: So the forfeit was you had to hand over your
- 10:45Speaker 2: phone and we'd just spin it, and then whoever it
- 10:47Speaker 2: stopped at, you had to phone them and do whatever
- 10:49Speaker 2: the forfeit was, like get as many Oasis titles into
- 10:52Speaker 2: the conversation or whatever.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Where was this?
- 10:57Speaker 2: No, it was a good few years ago. It was
- 11:01Speaker 2: a good few years ago. I don't even know why
- 11:03Speaker 2: your number was in Cassie's phone. I don't either. We're
- 11:07Speaker 2: still filming. The cameras went blank there. I don't know
- 11:09Speaker 2: what happened. Off air. It must have been something with
- 11:12Speaker 2: her dad or something. It must have been something. You
- 11:13Speaker 2: were doing something for Casper Gadsden. Because people probably don't know,
- 11:17Speaker 2: but Cassie's dad was very much part of the Scotland set-up.
- 11:19Speaker 2: He was. He was with Bertie Vokes. And he was
- 11:23Speaker 2: Craig Brown's assistant.
- 11:24Speaker 1: He was always at 98. He was at 98 when
- 11:26Speaker 1: I was in the World Cup. And obviously many years
- 11:29Speaker 1: before that as well.
- 11:31Speaker 2: Because I think he was Craig Brown's assistant at Clyde.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Aye.
- 11:35Speaker 2: And Craig brought him in and he did the massages
- 11:37Speaker 2: and bought the sweets for us.
- 11:38Speaker 3: I don't, anybody, I don't, did you ever get a
- 11:40Speaker 3: massage over him?
- 11:41Speaker 2: I don't think he'd actually done any massages. I don't
- 11:43Speaker 2: think he did. He knew how to give a massage,
- 11:45Speaker 2: but that was his title. He just talked to everybody
- 11:46Speaker 2: and gave you sweeties. Aye.
- 11:48Speaker 3: Which is quite wrong in today's thing, aye.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Famous, I know, I mean, you're a good guy. You're
- 11:53Speaker 2: a footballer, you shouldn't be sitting eating Mars bars for games.
- 11:56Speaker 1: I'd probably be wrong in the World Cup.
- 11:58Speaker 2: Aye.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Too much sugar. But yeah, other partners then over the years, just.
- 12:03Speaker 2: So I had those guys. Hugh Keevans was, when the
- 12:06Speaker 2: show first started, Hugh was kind of like my sidekick.
- 12:08Speaker 2: You know what I mean? It was funny because before
- 12:12Speaker 2: I did it, it was always just the presenter would
- 12:14Speaker 2: go on and they wouldn't have anyone else. And I
- 12:16Speaker 2: wanted to branch it out and have more people involved
- 12:19Speaker 2: and more of a conversation and make it more fun.
- 12:22Speaker 2: It was very like, Clyde's Breakfast Show before I did
- 12:25Speaker 2: it was more kind of very informative and it was
- 12:27Speaker 2: all about news, sport, travel and here's some songs and
- 12:32Speaker 2: here's what's in the headlines today, but I wanted to
- 12:34Speaker 2: make it more of a carry on as it is now.
- 12:37Speaker 2: And that's what we did. And it was very difficult
- 12:39Speaker 2: to convince him to let me change it. It was
- 12:41Speaker 2: so difficult. But we got there. We got there in
- 12:44Speaker 2: the end and it worked out. And, you know, that's
- 12:46Speaker 2: nearly 30 years I've been doing that show. It'll be
- 12:48Speaker 2: 30 years in April.
- 12:49Speaker 1: That's incredible. And GBX obviously came.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Even before it.
- 12:53Speaker 1: It became everybody's kind of getting ready before they went
- 12:56Speaker 1: out kind of stuff, wasn't it, on the radio?
- 12:58Speaker 2: It's funny, GBX just started and it was on Clyde
- 13:00Speaker 2: for like, It's incredible. 20-odd years. Now it's everywhere. You
- 13:05Speaker 2: get it. It's all over Scotland. It goes out in
- 13:08Speaker 2: seven different stations in Scotland. It goes out in Northern
- 13:10Speaker 2: Ireland as well. It goes out everywhere. It's just like crazy. So, aye,
- 13:16Speaker 2: GBX has been great because that's what I'm into. That's
- 13:19Speaker 2: my thing. Obviously, the music they play, Clyde, during the
- 13:22Speaker 2: day is what people want to hear, but Saturday night's
- 13:26Speaker 2: my thing.
- 13:26Speaker 1: What is your kind of music influences for your stuff?
- 13:31Speaker 2: I loved all the kind of electric stuff when I
- 13:33Speaker 2: was like a kid, you know, in the 80s, all
- 13:36Speaker 2: the bands that were like Ultravolts and bands that had
- 13:38Speaker 2: to play keyboards and things like that. I was right
- 13:41Speaker 2: into all that kind of stuff. And I was a
- 13:44Speaker 2: big David Bowie fan when I was very young because
- 13:47Speaker 2: of the name probably throwing me towards it.
- 13:49Speaker 3: My uncle used to say he was relation A or no?
- 13:51Speaker 2: Don't just tell everybody. Yeah, I think I probably did
- 13:54Speaker 2: tell everyone that. And there's a singer just now, Callum Bowie,
- 13:56Speaker 2: and he says everywhere he goes, people say, are you
- 13:58Speaker 2: George Bowie's son? LAUGHTER so he's convinced by that but
- 14:02Speaker 2: yeah I think that's what kind of drew so I
- 14:04Speaker 2: was a big kind of Dubai fan when I was
- 14:06Speaker 2: a kid and got right into all the electric stuff
- 14:08Speaker 2: and I think that's how I probably started DJing then
- 14:12Speaker 2: you take that.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Obviously into a kind of show as well nightclubs my dad.
- 14:15Speaker 2: Owned nightclubs so my dad owned what is now The
- 14:18Speaker 2: Garage in Sucky Hall Street and there was a club
- 14:21Speaker 2: The Penthouse above the Apollo remember the legendary Apollo probably
- 14:25Speaker 2: before your time you'll have heard of it it was
- 14:27Speaker 2: a legendary live venue in Glasgow just across from the
- 14:30Speaker 2: pavilion in Renfield Street. So he owned the nightclub above that.
- 14:36Speaker 2: And he had a few places in town. He had
- 14:39Speaker 2: a place in New York at one point as well.
- 14:41Speaker 2: So he had a few clubs.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Did you play there?
- 14:43Speaker 2: No. God, I was like six or something at the time.
- 14:45Speaker 2: So this is when I was a wee boy. I'm
- 14:47Speaker 2: talking like in the 70s during the disco era or something.
- 14:51Speaker 2: So that's how I got into it. When I was
- 14:54Speaker 2: like 13, 14, he would take me in and told
- 14:58Speaker 2: me I could sit behind the DJ box. I was
- 14:59Speaker 2: too young to stand at the door or be at
- 15:01Speaker 2: the bar. So you'd get a choice of the DJ
- 15:03Speaker 2: box or the cloakroom, what you're going to take.
- 15:06Speaker 1: Yeah, so obviously that was your making then.
- 15:07Speaker 2: And that was it. And back then, the club used
- 15:11Speaker 2: to buy the records. So there was all these records
- 15:13Speaker 2: lying there, and they said, I'll just take the old
- 15:15Speaker 2: ones up the road. So I took all the records
- 15:16Speaker 2: up the road and used to record myself kidding on
- 15:19Speaker 2: I was a DJ and stuff like that, which is
- 15:20Speaker 2: a little bit tragic when you think.
- 15:22Speaker 1: About it now.
- 15:22Speaker 2: But it served me well. It's like you guys. kicking
- 15:26Speaker 2: a ball out the back.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Aye, it leads to your career basically. So obviously you
- 15:32Speaker 1: go out with the GBX stuff. Was that your idea
- 15:34Speaker 1: to take that from the radio?
- 15:37Speaker 2: Yes. Between me and my missus really, we came up
- 15:40Speaker 2: with the idea of taking it. She came up with
- 15:42Speaker 2: the name GBX because it was the GB experience initially.
- 15:47Speaker 2: And she said, GBX is a lot, it'll look better,
- 15:50Speaker 2: it'll sound better.
- 15:51Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 15:53Speaker 2: That's why we came up with the name GBX and
- 15:54Speaker 2: then we started doing gigs and going out and about
- 15:56Speaker 2: and doing events. It's great fun. I love doing the
- 15:59Speaker 2: live stuff. See the festivals. That's my favourite thing. I
- 16:03Speaker 2: think I did 21 festivals this year. Got to play
- 16:06Speaker 2: Transmit and got to play out in Miami for the
- 16:09Speaker 2: World Cup stuff. It was amazing.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Was that before the games out there?
- 16:14Speaker 2: It was the night before the Ilfe Brazil game. So, aye,
- 16:19Speaker 2: it was great.
- 16:20Speaker 1: It must be great going and doing those kinds of gigs.
- 16:22Speaker 1: What's your favourite it's been over the year then?
- 16:25Speaker 2: Well, I would think for me, getting to play Transmit
- 16:27Speaker 2: was the most amazing moment because that's always been a dream.
- 16:30Speaker 2: It was always teeing the part and then when teeing
- 16:32Speaker 2: the part stopped, it was like Transmit and I kept
- 16:35Speaker 2: asking them, I don't know if it would work, don't
- 16:36Speaker 2: know if it would work. And then they said, actually,
- 16:39Speaker 2: we're going to show the game and then Richard Ashcroft's
- 16:44Speaker 2: going to finish and there's a wee space can you
- 16:46Speaker 2: and Cammie come on too? Because me and Cammie obviously
- 16:48Speaker 2: did Whiskey Roll. So Cammie came on and we did
- 16:51Speaker 2: Whiskey Roll and then I went into a DJ set
- 16:54Speaker 2: and they were just all bouncing about. And it was
- 16:56Speaker 2: great because I think they did a later ticket. So
- 16:59Speaker 2: rather than, you could buy an extra ticket or a
- 17:03Speaker 2: separate ticket where you got in at like 7 o'clock
- 17:05Speaker 2: at night and you just saw Richard Ashcroft and then us.
- 17:09Speaker 1: In the game. Was that the Morocco game?
- 17:10Speaker 2: That was the Morocco game, yeah.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Because we were around the corner, remember that? St Luke's.
- 17:15Speaker 2: St Luke's, yeah. I think everywhere was bouncing that night
- 17:18Speaker 2: because there was optimism at that point, you know what
- 17:21Speaker 2: I mean? I think after the Morocco gave us God.
- 17:23Speaker 1: There always is.
- 17:24Speaker 2: There always is.
- 17:25Speaker 1: We always start with the optimism and then it quickly fades.
- 17:29Speaker 2: It quickly fades. I mean, even the other night, it was, oh, wow,
- 17:32Speaker 2: we're looking great on Saturday. And it was like, five
- 17:34Speaker 2: to three, nothing. I've been quite lucky, though, with the
- 17:38Speaker 2: music because I've done, obviously, a lot of songs that
- 17:40Speaker 2: have been adopted as Scottish anthems. So I found, like,
- 17:45Speaker 2: In the summer, my Spotify just went through the roof.
- 17:47Speaker 2: It was mental because everyone was streaming Bits and Pieces
- 17:50Speaker 2: and Yes Sir, I Can Boogie and all that kind
- 17:52Speaker 2: of stuff and songs that I've done, which are associated
- 17:56Speaker 2: with Scotland. So that was great for me. It was
- 17:58Speaker 2: good fun.
- 17:59Speaker 1: So can I move on to what other interests have
- 18:01Speaker 1: you got? You said about sport. Your football, what about
- 18:04Speaker 1: anything else?
- 18:05Speaker 2: Boxing, right into boxing.
- 18:07Speaker 1: You must have met a few over the years.
- 18:09Speaker 2: What, sportsmen?
- 18:10Speaker 1: Yes, I guess, so I'm not sure.
- 18:11Speaker 2: He had Usain Bolt on once right I tried to
- 18:14Speaker 2: get him to sign for Morton but he.
- 18:16Speaker 4: Wasn't he did play football though didn't he no I
- 18:18Speaker 4: think he played a wee bit yeah I think he
- 18:20Speaker 4: said his.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Dream was to play for Man United or something and
- 18:23Speaker 2: then I think maybe he played for was.
- 18:25Speaker 5: It what a jam club or something he signed up
- 18:28Speaker 5: and he played in the he played in a few
- 18:30Speaker 5: charity games he was youthful he was a quick guy
- 18:33Speaker 5: but he was quick I don't know how he was
- 18:36Speaker 5: with the ball it's.
- 18:37Speaker 2: Only half of it isn't it take the ball with
- 18:40Speaker 2: you Usain So we did this spoof thing about how
- 18:44Speaker 2: he was going to sign for Morton and all that
- 18:45Speaker 2: and then suddenly it was in all the papers that
- 18:48Speaker 2: Usain Bolt was going to sign for Morton. It was
- 18:50Speaker 2: just me and him having a laugh really. But he's
- 18:53Speaker 2: probably the most famous. I did find out that Tyson
- 18:57Speaker 2: Fury followed me on Twitter which was quite cool because
- 19:00Speaker 2: apparently he's right into all that kind of bouncy GVX
- 19:04Speaker 2: style music.
- 19:05Speaker 1: So did you do anything had the opportunity to do
- 19:09Speaker 1: anything at the fights before over the years no did.
- 19:13Speaker 2: I have no I don't think I had actually I
- 19:17Speaker 2: DJ'd at Josh Taylor's wedding I was about as close
- 19:19Speaker 2: to it as I got I think Ricky wanted me
- 19:21Speaker 2: to do something it never happened when Ricky Burns was
- 19:24Speaker 2: doing the SEC fights I'm sure we spoke about doing
- 19:27Speaker 2: something but it never came to anything but hopefully one
- 19:31Speaker 2: day I'll get to I've done a few white collar
- 19:34Speaker 2: fights and stuff.
- 19:36Speaker 1: Hugh's involved in the boxing as well, isn't he? Hugh
- 19:39Speaker 1: Keevans with the... Aye.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Aye.
- 19:41Speaker 1: The Boxing Knights.
- 19:42Speaker 2: Aye. Hugh's a big boxing fan. It's the Andrews Club.
- 19:46Speaker 2: I boxed Tommy Sheridan a couple of times. And... er
- 19:50Speaker 2: Boxed Gordon Smith You did Aye Aye Charity fights Aye
- 19:54Speaker 2: charity fights White collar fights How did they go Aye
- 19:56Speaker 2: they went Aye they went alright It went pretty well
- 19:58Speaker 2: actually It was good Tommy's actually really good Because Tommy's
- 20:01Speaker 2: done it For years Me and Gordon Are about the
- 20:04Speaker 2: same level I'd say Tommy's A level above us Erm
- 20:08Speaker 2: yeah I boxed I did quite a few white collar
- 20:11Speaker 2: fights so we need to do it now I'm too
- 20:12Speaker 2: old for it now but I'm talking 15-20 years ago
- 20:15Speaker 2: I used to do quite a lot it was great
- 20:16Speaker 2: I loved it I loved it it was great fitness
- 20:18Speaker 2: it was something to aim for I still I don't
- 20:21Speaker 2: even spar anymore I just go in and do the
- 20:22Speaker 2: bag but I still go in and punch a bag
- 20:24Speaker 2: three or four times a week you know what I
- 20:26Speaker 2: mean still love it it's great fitness it's just.
- 20:30Speaker 1: My wee happy place we did a wee bit at
- 20:33Speaker 1: a party we took the boys was it Catholic?
- 20:35Speaker 2: Catholic yeah did a boxing I helped Oh, it's hard going.
- 20:39Speaker 3: That was more like the MMA fight, you know. You're
- 20:42Speaker 3: punching the bags, but you're kicking as well.
- 20:45Speaker 2: I wouldn't fancy that. No.
- 20:49Speaker 1: What about your most difficult guests over the years? Somebody
- 20:53Speaker 1: that you maybe thought... You two.
- 20:54Speaker 2: No. Most difficult guests. Most of the guests, I get
- 20:59Speaker 2: asked that quite a lot by people.
- 21:00Speaker 1: Does anybody kind of let you down? that you've went
- 21:05Speaker 1: to meet?
- 21:06Speaker 2: Oh, God, there's been a few. But most people are
- 21:08Speaker 2: really nice. And you'll find this in here as well,
- 21:11Speaker 2: that people will come in and they'll have something to
- 21:13Speaker 2: promote or whatever, or they won't want to look like
- 21:15Speaker 2: a nasty piece of work. So they'll put on the
- 21:18Speaker 2: best version of themselves. But there's been one or two.
- 21:21Speaker 2: Jess Glynn was horrendous. Jess Glynn came in and I
- 21:26Speaker 2: said to her, like she'd been announced for Transmit. I
- 21:29Speaker 2: don't know if she was just having a bad day
- 21:31Speaker 2: or whatever. This never went out on air. We never
- 21:33Speaker 2: broadcast it. I wanted to put it out, but my
- 21:35Speaker 2: boss was like, no, you can't put that out. So
- 21:38Speaker 2: Jess Glynn came in and I said, so I see
- 21:40Speaker 2: you're playing Transmit in a couple of weeks' time. I said,
- 21:43Speaker 2: that's going to be exciting. I said, what are you
- 21:44Speaker 2: going to do? What's the plan? What's in the show
- 21:48Speaker 2: for Transmit? Thinking that was a good local story. I said, well,
- 21:51Speaker 2: do you think I'm going to sit here and tell
- 21:52Speaker 2: you my entire set list for a festival? I said,
- 21:56Speaker 2: I just thought, obviously, you're going to do the Clean
- 21:58Speaker 2: Bandit stuff, because you did a lot of collaborations with
- 22:00Speaker 2: other people. I thought, is it just going to be
- 22:01Speaker 2: your own songs? You're going to do some of the collabs?
- 22:04Speaker 2: There's a wee surprise cover in there. Maybe someone's going
- 22:06Speaker 2: to come out on stage. Tell me all about it.
- 22:08Speaker 2: I'm not going to sit here and tell you everything
- 22:09Speaker 2: that I'm going to do. Wow.
- 22:11Speaker 1: Is that why you're doing an interview?
- 22:14Speaker 2: And I said, well, why are you here? See when
- 22:16Speaker 2: you're up. So I thought. I would find that really
- 22:19Speaker 2: hard to think. Why don't you fuck? Aye, well that's
- 22:22Speaker 2: basically what I did. I was like, fuck it, here
- 22:24Speaker 2: we go. I said, get out of here. See when
- 22:26Speaker 2: you're on a plane, right? And you hear that, take
- 22:31Speaker 2: my hand song. I said, do you feel the same
- 22:34Speaker 2: way as us? And go, oh God. And every time
- 22:37Speaker 2: you're on a Jet 2 flight, and she went, I
- 22:39Speaker 2: wouldn't travel on Jet 2. Oh wow. So Cassie was like,
- 22:44Speaker 2: I'm travelling Jet 2 tomorrow. I'm going on holiday. And
- 22:48Speaker 2: I'm going to see my mum and dad in Spain.
- 22:50Speaker 2: and thanks for telling me where you're going on holiday,
- 22:53Speaker 2: like I'm really interested and I just kept going so
- 22:58Speaker 2: of course we were just pushing it further and all
- 23:00Speaker 2: that kind of stuff it just became like a rammy
- 23:05Speaker 2: it was mental and I'm thinking why would you, because
- 23:07Speaker 2: we didn't go and say can Jess Glenn come on
- 23:09Speaker 2: the show, they came to us.
- 23:11Speaker 3: And said can we come on here it was great
- 23:14Speaker 3: that was so awkward that would.
- 23:17Speaker 1: Be But that's what you're up against. Why would you
- 23:19Speaker 1: want it and all?
- 23:19Speaker 2: No.
- 23:20Speaker 1: Just keep going with them and then answers, it's mental.
- 23:22Speaker 2: Majority of people are great. Who's your favourite then? My
- 23:26Speaker 2: favourite is probably George Michael. Obviously sadly not longer with
- 23:32Speaker 2: us but he was just great. Just because I think
- 23:37Speaker 2: I was a huge fan and I was a wee
- 23:38Speaker 2: bit nervous about meeting him.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:40Speaker 2: Interviewing him and.
- 23:41Speaker 1: What what year would that be then what would oh.
- 23:43Speaker 2: When was that that was about 20 years ago maybe.
- 23:45Speaker 1: He was here in Clyde he.
- 23:47Speaker 2: Did come to Clyde but I didn't do that interview
- 23:49Speaker 2: he came to Clyde once this one was down in
- 23:51Speaker 2: London so I flew down to London and he was
- 23:54Speaker 2: having a bad day and it wasn't going well and
- 23:58Speaker 2: all the other interviews were getting cut short and I
- 24:00Speaker 2: was meant to do I think 20 minutes with.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Him Hi guys, as you probably well know by now,
- 24:06Speaker 1: we have signed up for the London Marathon next April
- 24:11Speaker 1: and we have some fantastic people supporting us, groups supporting us.
- 24:15Speaker 1: We're doing it for a fantastic cause, or two causes,
- 24:17Speaker 1: who are we doing it for?
- 24:18Speaker 3: We're doing it for Headway UK and the Concilium Sports Foundation.
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yep, so we're going to have some updated videos of
- 24:27Speaker 1: our progress and our training and everything else it takes
- 24:30Speaker 1: to get us over the line. He's emphasised that time
- 24:33Speaker 1: doesn't matter.
- 24:33Speaker 2: I probably agree, as long as.
- 24:36Speaker 1: We complete it. There'll be a link in the bio
- 24:40Speaker 1: for any charity donations. We're going to be raising as
- 24:44Speaker 1: much money as we can over the next period of time.
- 24:46Speaker 1: Our training starts very soon. And yeah, look forward to
- 24:50Speaker 1: some updates on here. Hopefully no injuries.
- 24:53Speaker 2: And we're going to turn it into an hour-long special,
- 24:55Speaker 2: fill it up with music and what have you. So
- 24:57Speaker 2: I get told it would only be 10 minutes, possibly five,
- 25:00Speaker 2: depending on how George was feeling, because it had me going, oh, Christ.
- 25:03Speaker 2: But we just had it all. It was great. And
- 25:06Speaker 2: after about 45 minutes, I had to wind the interview up.
- 25:08Speaker 2: And it just clicked. It was great. And it's just because, again,
- 25:13Speaker 2: talking about the club that my dad owned above the Apollo,
- 25:16Speaker 2: when they first started to play the Apollo, and I'd
- 25:18Speaker 2: been at the gig, because my dad used to get
- 25:19Speaker 2: me into all the gigs. and like people forget when
- 25:22Speaker 2: Wham first started they were actually a really cool band
- 25:25Speaker 2: I know it got very cheesy but that first album
- 25:27Speaker 2: was like really cool and that we went to see
- 25:30Speaker 2: him live and I was talking about that and he
- 25:32Speaker 2: understood that I got it and that was up and
- 25:34Speaker 2: he just opened up to me and he was great
- 25:37Speaker 2: and then about a week later his management phoned and
- 25:41Speaker 2: asked if I would support him at Hamden because I
- 25:43Speaker 2: told him that I was you know DJing and stuff
- 25:45Speaker 2: and He was one of my inspirations for being a DJ.
- 25:49Speaker 2: And he said, would you like to come and play?
- 25:50Speaker 2: George wants to know if you'd like to come and
- 25:51Speaker 2: open for him at Hampden, which I did. And it
- 25:53Speaker 2: was amazing. You went and did it, right? I went
- 25:55Speaker 2: and did it. It took my son Ross along, who
- 25:57Speaker 2: was only about 13 at the time or something. Yeah,
- 26:00Speaker 2: it was brilliant.
- 26:01Speaker 1: So there's the wee quirks of your job over there.
- 26:03Speaker 1: There's the people you've met.
- 26:04Speaker 2: You just don't know.
- 26:04Speaker 1: You're playing live with Rob. I know.
- 26:06Speaker 2: Suddenly you're on with that. It was great. So yeah,
- 26:09Speaker 2: I got to do some good supports over there. I
- 26:10Speaker 2: got to support Pink at Hampden as well. I supported
- 26:13Speaker 2: Robbie a few times. He was a good lad. And yeah,
- 26:16Speaker 2: it's been great. I've been really lucky. I've been really blessed.
- 26:19Speaker 2: You know what I mean? See, when I look back
- 26:21Speaker 2: on it, this has been some life. You know what
- 26:23Speaker 2: I mean?
- 26:24Speaker 1: Is the pink one the recent one?
- 26:26Speaker 2: No, that was, again, about 20 years. No, maybe a
- 26:29Speaker 2: bit less than that. Maybe about 12. Maybe about 2010, maybe. So,
- 26:34Speaker 2: a good while ago. It was the one when she
- 26:35Speaker 2: was doing all the trapeze stuff. And then she does
- 26:37Speaker 2: that next thing. She fell on her herself, didn't she?
- 26:39Speaker 2: When she used to go up, climb up and stuff.
- 26:42Speaker 1: Amazing. It's been great.
- 26:45Speaker 2: So would you say the 80s were the best decade? No, no. No.
- 26:50Speaker 2: I found out I was talking about this on the
- 26:51Speaker 2: radio the other day. I think people that think the
- 26:55Speaker 2: 80s were the best decade, and I'll probably get a
- 26:59Speaker 2: credit for saying this, but people who were not alive
- 27:01Speaker 2: in the 80s, the 80s was a horrible time, right?
- 27:04Speaker 2: I mean, there was so much hatred in the 80s.
- 27:07Speaker 1: You know what I mean? You're going 90s.
- 27:08Speaker 2: I'm 90s all the way. The rave scene. The rave era.
- 27:11Speaker 2: I'll say the 80s. It was so much... fighting and,
- 27:16Speaker 2: you know, the football violence and the minor strike violence and,
- 27:20Speaker 2: you know, poll tax riots and there's so many horrible
- 27:24Speaker 2: things in the 80s that people forget about. They think
- 27:26Speaker 2: it's all glam and perms and tans and all that
- 27:30Speaker 2: and happy music. It was actually a very dark, horrible
- 27:33Speaker 2: time in the 80s. See, the 90s when it just
- 27:35Speaker 2: opened up and it was a rave scene and everyone just...
- 27:39Speaker 2: It was all about love and just everyone... Going out
- 27:43Speaker 2: and having a good time and just enjoying yourself. Clubs
- 27:46Speaker 2: were at their peak. The 90s was an amazing time.
- 27:50Speaker 2: I wasn't a fan of the 80s at all.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Did you ever go to the Metro in the air?
- 27:53Speaker 2: All the time. Yeah, I used to play the Metro
- 27:56Speaker 2: a lot.
- 27:56Speaker 1: I was about to say, did you play as well?
- 27:58Speaker 2: One of my best mates, Joe Deacon, was a resident there.
- 28:01Speaker 2: So me and Joe have been pals for 40 years,
- 28:04Speaker 2: you know what I mean? And he's just a gem
- 28:07Speaker 2: of a man.
- 28:08Speaker 1: We used to have the wee cassettes.
- 28:09Speaker 2: That's right, Metro tape. I mean, I don't know how
- 28:11Speaker 2: legal they were. No, probably not at all. But Joe
- 28:15Speaker 2: Deacon Metro tape was legendary. Everybody had one of those.
- 28:19Speaker 2: It was great. Metro was a special place because it
- 28:24Speaker 2: was a bit more commercial than the other clubs, you
- 28:26Speaker 2: know what I mean? And it just had something. It
- 28:29Speaker 2: was a kind of euphoric feeling when you went in.
- 28:31Speaker 2: It was just all big anthems, particularly when Joe was on.
- 28:34Speaker 2: And he just knew how to work a crowd, you
- 28:36Speaker 2: know what I mean?
- 28:36Speaker 1: He just knew how.
- 28:37Speaker 2: He knew a tune when he heard it, even still now.
- 28:40Speaker 2: We still go back and do, because the Metro's back
- 28:42Speaker 2: open again. Right. And we still go back and do,
- 28:45Speaker 2: we did a daytime party not that long ago, actually,
- 28:48Speaker 2: because that's the big thing right now.
- 28:50Speaker 1: The daytime parties, I was just saying earlier on, I
- 28:52Speaker 1: was at one, I think it was in April or
- 28:54Speaker 1: May this year. It was a gym that I go to,
- 28:57Speaker 1: and the guy had organised it, and it was Cassie
- 28:59Speaker 1: that played.
- 28:59Speaker 2: Jumper.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Bad. Unbelievable. You came and walked in, it was like,
- 29:04Speaker 1: Sunshine Indoors like 2 in the afternoon this place is
- 29:07Speaker 1: bouncing aye just everybody dancing yeah it was.
- 29:11Speaker 2: Great it was really good it's the big thing right
- 29:12Speaker 2: now Jackie it's like people is it more for our
- 29:15Speaker 2: age group yes yes I would say from.
- 29:18Speaker 6: About 30 to 70 disco songs just all 90s naughty
- 29:26Speaker 6: stuff and what have you I'm doing one on Saturday
- 29:28Speaker 6: and it'll probably all be like 90s stuff I'll play
- 29:31Speaker 6: you know what I mean with a few naughty things
- 29:33Speaker 6: thrown in.
- 29:34Speaker 2: And aye they're great you can get six seven hundred
- 29:38Speaker 2: people at.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Two o'clock in the afternoon what's the actress.
- 29:42Speaker 2: The line of duty yeah Vicky McClure Vicky McClure she
- 29:46Speaker 2: started it her and her husband and I mean to
- 29:50Speaker 2: think They started that and it's become this massive thing.
- 29:55Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know if it's worldwide, but certainly UK-wide.
- 29:58Speaker 2: It's huge. Just on the back of them coming up
- 30:01Speaker 2: with that idea.
- 30:02Speaker 1: You think about it, though, obviously that age group have
- 30:04Speaker 1: come through. You're talking about the 90s coming through in
- 30:06Speaker 1: the club and it's far too late to go out.
- 30:08Speaker 1: So it's appealing to these.
- 30:10Speaker 2: Good kids, you're a good grandkid.
- 30:11Speaker 3: No, because we're normally sleeping at 10 o'clock. Kids are
- 30:15Speaker 3: just going out when we're going in.
- 30:16Speaker 1: But it's more appealing that. I just couldn't believe when
- 30:19Speaker 1: I walked through this, I hadn't heard of it really.
- 30:22Speaker 1: Walked through and the place was rammed. Everybody was up
- 30:25Speaker 1: for a good time.
- 30:26Speaker 2: I remember when I first started, I was up in
- 30:28Speaker 2: Aberdeen and I was doing a gig. And I'd just
- 30:31Speaker 2: arrived at a train station. I get out and I
- 30:33Speaker 2: walk past the club and there must have been like
- 30:35Speaker 2: 400 people queuing. I thought, is that for me? And
- 30:38Speaker 2: somebody said, no, that's for a daytime event. I was like,
- 30:41Speaker 2: all right, okay. Then I thought, a daytime event? And
- 30:45Speaker 2: now it's just like they're everywhere. And they're massive. And
- 30:49Speaker 2: I think it's here to stay. It's great when something
- 30:50Speaker 2: like that comes along because it's not a fad. It's
- 30:52Speaker 2: not like it's like, oh, it's not as busy as
- 30:54Speaker 2: it used to be. It's kind of like people have
- 30:56Speaker 2: just embraced it and thought that this is the future.
- 30:59Speaker 2: This is it. Because you're never too old to enjoy
- 31:01Speaker 2: a night or a day out in a club. You
- 31:04Speaker 2: know what I mean? It's just, as Jackie says, it's
- 31:06Speaker 2: about the time thing. It's like getting up the road
- 31:08Speaker 2: at three in the morning. Did you have a few
- 31:10Speaker 2: drinks before you go in?
- 31:10Speaker 1: No, I had my first pint of Guinness when I arrived.
- 31:16Speaker 1: But no, we were just... Are you dancing?
- 31:20Speaker 2: No.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Can I maybe?
- 31:21Speaker 2: Stand at the bar.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Shuffling.
- 31:22Speaker 2: Holding a gun.
- 31:23Speaker 1: Just enjoying the ambience.
- 31:25Speaker 2: Just watching.
- 31:26Speaker 1: Enjoying the ambience. But no, it was just a matter
- 31:29Speaker 1: of people getting into bad. I've been in bad before.
- 31:32Speaker 1: It's a good arena for different things.
- 31:33Speaker 2: It's great, isn't it? It's a great venue, but I
- 31:35Speaker 2: like it.
- 31:35Speaker 1: We did a couple of podcasts in there at one point. Oh,
- 31:38Speaker 1: did you? It's a good state of mind.
- 31:40Speaker 2: Oh, sure, thanks.
- 31:40Speaker 1: But it was just getting in and it was like
- 31:43Speaker 1: the fun in the afternoon. You couldn't get your head
- 31:46Speaker 1: around it.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Right.
- 31:47Speaker 1: But, Aye. As you say, it's here to stay.
- 31:50Speaker 2: It's here to stay, and it's a great thing, you
- 31:51Speaker 2: know what I mean? Because the club scene's nowhere near
- 31:53Speaker 2: as busy as it used to be, but this supplements it,
- 31:56Speaker 2: you know what I mean? So it's great. It gives
- 31:58Speaker 2: everyone a chance to go out. You can get the
- 32:00Speaker 2: younger ones to go out at night, the older ones
- 32:01Speaker 2: go out during the day. Everybody's happy.
- 32:03Speaker 1: You're DJing at everything.
- 32:04Speaker 2: I'm DJing at them all. I find the late nights
- 32:08Speaker 2: difficult now. I was doing one a couple of weeks ago,
- 32:11Speaker 2: a freshers' night at the Foo Bar. I think it
- 32:13Speaker 2: was on from like two till three in the morning.
- 32:14Speaker 2: I was driving home at four and I was thinking,
- 32:17Speaker 2: I used to do this all the time. I don't
- 32:18Speaker 2: know if I can do this for much longer. You
- 32:20Speaker 2: know what I mean? It's hard at night. It's tough,
- 32:23Speaker 2: isn't it? As you get older, you get a little.
- 32:24Speaker 1: Have you seen a lot of change over the years
- 32:26Speaker 1: in the nightlife type of stuff?
- 32:28Speaker 2: Aye. It's... I mean, it's still fun now and it's
- 32:32Speaker 2: still great, but see what we're talking about in the 90s.
- 32:35Speaker 2: It was just... It was electric. You'd go in and
- 32:38Speaker 2: you'd just feel the atmosphere. Now, I think, people are
- 32:41Speaker 2: scared to let themselves go because of mobile phones and
- 32:44Speaker 2: what have you, because everyone's filming it. So if you're
- 32:46Speaker 2: like jumping about to a tune, giving it a laudy,
- 32:48Speaker 2: somebody's making a video of you and suddenly it's on,
- 32:52Speaker 2: and it's like you're embarrassed by it so people are
- 32:57Speaker 2: afraid to let go whereas back in the 90s everyone
- 33:00Speaker 2: was like if a chin came on they would just
- 33:01Speaker 2: be like sometimes you see.
- 33:03Speaker 1: Footage if somebody's in all the kind of ravers back
- 33:05Speaker 1: in the day that's exactly like nobody's giving a shit.
- 33:07Speaker 2: No it was just one big movement and it was
- 33:09Speaker 2: like everyone was into.
- 33:11Speaker 1: It did you do stuff at the tunnel and that
- 33:13Speaker 1: oh yeah I.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Used to do tunnel all the time used to do
- 33:16Speaker 2: Archeos all the time every big club did them all
- 33:19Speaker 2: did them all and it was great Arceus was a
- 33:23Speaker 2: weird club because when it opened it was really like
- 33:26Speaker 2: cool and trendy and then it went totally the other
- 33:29Speaker 2: way towards the end it was a battleground it was
- 33:31Speaker 2: all over is that the.
- 33:32Speaker 3: One upstairs the bit up the top yeah.
- 33:36Speaker 2: The big round one yeah and you could see all
- 33:38Speaker 2: the way.
- 33:38Speaker 1: Up it was a gorgeous club did you see the
- 33:40Speaker 1: footage on social media of it recently it's still it's.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Just been left it's just been left it's been shut
- 33:46Speaker 2: for what 20 years.
- 33:47Speaker 1: Must be yeah must be They were filming through it
- 33:50Speaker 1: and it was like you could recognise.
- 33:52Speaker 2: Oh, there you were. There was a bed in it.
- 33:54Speaker 2: I remember there being a double bed in it. Remember that?
- 33:59Speaker 2: That was a big thing. I had a double bed
- 34:00Speaker 2: for some reason. Because it was roped off so you
- 34:03Speaker 2: couldn't go and sit on it. It just seemed very strange.
- 34:05Speaker 1: By all accounts, now they're doing tunnel kind of.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Reunions? Yeah.
- 34:11Speaker 1: I think my brother-in-law was at one.
- 34:13Speaker 2: My wife was at one just a couple of weeks ago.
- 34:15Speaker 2: She said it was fantastic. Loved it. She's playing all
- 34:18Speaker 2: the old tunes for the old DJs. Yeah, it's great
- 34:21Speaker 2: that you've got that. Why shouldn't you have that? It
- 34:25Speaker 2: was part of our culture. So a band can back
- 34:28Speaker 2: out on tour. If the Rolling Stones can still get
- 34:30Speaker 2: out on tour, then the DJs for the Tunnel can
- 34:32Speaker 2: still go out and do a wee night.
- 34:34Speaker 1: Did you get caught up in the Oasis stuff last year?
- 34:37Speaker 1: Are you an Oasis fan?
- 34:38Speaker 2: I am an Oasis fan. I interviewed Noel Gallagher a
- 34:43Speaker 2: few times and that was... not the easiest I think
- 34:45Speaker 2: Liam's a lot easier to interview.
- 34:47Speaker 4: Than Noel so we'll talk about difficult guests so difficult
- 34:49Speaker 4: guests I'm afraid Noel would come in although I have
- 34:52Speaker 4: seen interviews of him when he's been great so I
- 34:54Speaker 4: think it just depends on how what day you get
- 34:57Speaker 4: him I got him before he went on stage at
- 35:00Speaker 4: a gig so maybe.
- 35:01Speaker 1: That's the worst thing he was doing his solo stuff.
- 35:02Speaker 2: This was when he was doing a Clyde One Live
- 35:04Speaker 2: gig for us and yeah it was a bit of
- 35:08Speaker 2: a challenge but I'm a huge Oasis fan I love
- 35:11Speaker 2: Oasis and But I can't remember where I was. I
- 35:15Speaker 2: wasn't here. I think I was playing in Ibiza the
- 35:19Speaker 2: weekend they were at Murrayfield. But I'll definitely go to
- 35:22Speaker 2: Celtic Park, Guy.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Might be playing.
- 35:25Speaker 2: I don't know if my thing will go down at Oasis, Guy.
- 35:27Speaker 2: I don't think that would work. I don't know.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Glasgow might work in Glasgow. But if he's picking it,
- 35:33Speaker 1: Nolan Lee.
- 35:34Speaker 2: I think Nolan Lee would be fine. But I would
- 35:38Speaker 2: imagine it would be... indie bands that are doing it
- 35:41Speaker 2: I think Richard Ashcroft did it last time and I
- 35:44Speaker 2: wouldn't be surprised if he was there again I.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Think there is going to be an announcement they kind
- 35:47Speaker 1: of said for Glasgow Celtic partner Ashcroft will obviously do
- 35:51Speaker 1: it as well but there will be.
- 35:53Speaker 2: There's one name that I've heard that I thought Oh aye,
- 35:56Speaker 2: that would be good.
- 35:57Speaker 1: Can you disclose it now?
- 35:58Speaker 2: No.
- 36:00Speaker 1: Can you disclose it off camera?
- 36:02Speaker 2: This is, I don't know if it's true though, but
- 36:04Speaker 2: it's just a rumour I heard. It wasn't from anyone
- 36:06Speaker 2: in the industry. It was just like one of my
- 36:07Speaker 2: pals told me that it was going to be somebody.
- 36:11Speaker 1: Interesting.
- 36:12Speaker 2: Somebody or some people? I don't know. I mean, I
- 36:15Speaker 2: don't know. I don't know enough about it. But it
- 36:18Speaker 2: was just a rumour that was going around Glasgow. I thought, oh,
- 36:21Speaker 2: he would support Oasis, really? Right. I don't know if
- 36:25Speaker 2: that's true but we'll wait and see and then you
- 36:28Speaker 2: can play it back I don't want to fall out
- 36:32Speaker 2: with the promoters and say you said so and so
- 36:34Speaker 2: was playing it it's not that that's going to make
- 36:37Speaker 2: any difference now isn't it because it's sold out ten
- 36:41Speaker 2: times over it's amazing to see though isn't it it's
- 36:43Speaker 2: great that they are back and you know they're one
- 36:47Speaker 2: of the greatest bands of all time so for them
- 36:49Speaker 2: to be back and who knows if they'll do a
- 36:52Speaker 2: new album there's a bit of me thinking do you
- 36:54Speaker 2: want them to do a new album because you don't
- 36:56Speaker 2: know if there'll be any good members Stone Rose has
- 36:57Speaker 2: come back and did a new album that's pretty rubbish
- 37:01Speaker 2: but the stuff's so great it's just like they look
- 37:05Speaker 2: better now than they ever were I saw them at
- 37:07Speaker 2: Loch Lomond did you go to Loch Lomond? I was
- 37:08Speaker 2: there both nights how did recent gigs compare to Loch Lomond?
- 37:15Speaker 1: I was quite drunk at Loch Lomond.
- 37:17Speaker 2: I thought they were more polished.
- 37:18Speaker 1: I thought they were more polished this time.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what I've heard. I've heard it's even slicker now.
- 37:23Speaker 1: I think Liam was off the booze, so it was professional.
- 37:28Speaker 1: They just sounded a lot more polished. It was like
- 37:31Speaker 1: the same stuff, but they've got that many songs that
- 37:33Speaker 1: they could probably put on another 10, 15 in this
- 37:35Speaker 1: tour that they haven't even used in the last one,
- 37:39Speaker 1: which is exciting. So, I get what you're saying about
- 37:42Speaker 1: the new music, they probably don't even need to.
- 37:44Speaker 2: You don't even need new music. Sometimes you go and
- 37:47Speaker 2: see a band and you say, here's our new singer,
- 37:48Speaker 2: I'm going to the bar. They don't really need it.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Get the old classics on. There's a bit of me thinking,
- 37:53Speaker 2: it'd be interesting to see what they came up with now,
- 37:55Speaker 2: but would it be a letdown because the original stuff
- 37:59Speaker 2: was so good? You know what I.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Mean?
- 38:03Speaker 2: So you're going to Celtic Park? Oh yeah, if I
- 38:06Speaker 2: can blag a ticket, I would definitely be there. So, yeah,
- 38:09Speaker 2: I'll definitely be there because I think it'll be amazing.
- 38:11Speaker 2: I think I'll have a good venue.
- 38:13Speaker 1: I went to see U2 there in 92.
- 38:15Speaker 2: I saw U2 there. I saw Prince there as well.
- 38:17Speaker 1: Prince was the most recent one, wasn't it? I think.
- 38:20Speaker 2: White did it as well.
- 38:22Speaker 1: U2 was 92. I signed for Celtic and blagged my
- 38:25Speaker 1: way in the front door.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Of course, you could just turn up for training.
- 38:28Speaker 1: I wasn't even in the first team, so looking back now,
- 38:32Speaker 1: I must have just been six months at the club.
- 38:34Speaker 1: And I've maybe just stuck a Celtic thing on and
- 38:36Speaker 1: walked through.
- 38:36Speaker 2: So I'm just here to get something out.
- 38:38Speaker 1: Of my locker. I don't think that'll work for the
- 38:40Speaker 1: next year.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Well, I mean, you're doing Celtic TV and all that,
- 38:42Speaker 2: so you can just say I'm here to film it.
- 38:45Speaker 1: I don't think... Well, I was going to joke about
- 38:47Speaker 1: just hiding in the office the night before, but I
- 38:49Speaker 1: don't think the people who have worked there have had
- 38:52Speaker 1: the opportunity to get tickets. I think it's just like
- 38:55Speaker 1: everybody else.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Tickets will be so scarce, won't they? They'll be so
- 38:58Speaker 2: scarce because everyone will want them.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Demand's been massive. We were in Ireland at the weekend
- 39:02Speaker 1: and I had a code But still couldn't get through.
- 39:06Speaker 2: I'm thinking there might even be more demand this time
- 39:10Speaker 2: because there's a lot of people, last time when they
- 39:13Speaker 2: announced it, saying, oh, I don't know how it'll be.
- 39:16Speaker 2: They might fall out.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Because of how they finished the last time, because they finished,
- 39:19Speaker 1: they were like, each other's thoughts.
- 39:21Speaker 2: People said, by the time we come to Glasgow, the
- 39:23Speaker 2: tour's going to have ended because they'll have fallen out
- 39:25Speaker 2: or whatever. But because it went so well, now they're
- 39:28Speaker 2: going to be like, oh, this is... a must-have ticket,
- 39:31Speaker 2: you know what I mean? Because it's going to be incredible.
- 39:32Speaker 1: I've thought that as well. Do you think they've deliberately
- 39:35Speaker 1: played the blinder of all blinders, the fallout to the reunion?
- 39:41Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised. I think, I'm sure there was
- 39:44Speaker 2: a fallout.
- 39:45Speaker 1: But not on the scale?
- 39:47Speaker 2: I don't know because I think... For them to fall
- 39:51Speaker 2: out and split up during a tour is a bit
- 39:55Speaker 2: of a slap in the face to people that have
- 39:56Speaker 2: bought tickets. Fall out when the tour's ended, and I
- 39:58Speaker 2: think they're too professional to do that. So I think
- 40:01Speaker 2: there was a fall out, but I think they probably
- 40:04Speaker 2: made up a lot a long time before they actually
- 40:08Speaker 2: made up, if you know what I mean. Maybe that's
- 40:10Speaker 2: just the cynical side of me, but it seems to
- 40:13Speaker 2: me like they, as you say, played a blinder.
- 40:15Speaker 1: It's just worth Even the first two songs, Hello and.
- 40:18Speaker 2: Aqueous, it just set it up perfectly.
- 40:23Speaker 1: But if it is that, then fair play to them.
- 40:25Speaker 2: We're no complaining. It is great to have them back.
- 40:28Speaker 1: Mate, you've been a great guest. Before we leave you,
- 40:31Speaker 1: or let you go rather, we've got recommendations from our
- 40:33Speaker 1: previous guests.
- 40:34Speaker 2: Okay.
- 40:36Speaker 1: So it's a film, a song and an album. So
- 40:38Speaker 1: the film is Usual Suspects.
- 40:40Speaker 2: Okay. Classic.
- 40:42Speaker 1: Great movie.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Great movie.
- 40:43Speaker 1: The song's Under Pressure because of your field of work.
- 40:47Speaker 2: Oh, I thought it was Under Pressure.
- 40:48Speaker 1: I see what you did there. House mix, Mopi, Dutch DJ,
- 40:53Speaker 1: have you heard of? Mopi? Yeah.
- 40:56Speaker 2: I should really know this, shouldn't I?
- 40:57Speaker 1: It was Mark Corcoran that suggested that.
- 40:59Speaker 2: Mopi.
- 41:01Speaker 1: Where was he when he was listening to that? Anyway,
- 41:05Speaker 1: that's the song and the album is from Matchbox 20,
- 41:10Speaker 1: Yourself or Someone Like You.
- 41:12Speaker 2: It's Rob Thomas. He's the guy that sang Smooth with Santana.
- 41:16Speaker 2: His band are Matchbox 20.
- 41:17Speaker 1: A few of the recommendations, we end up putting them
- 41:19Speaker 1: on in the car on the way home.
- 41:20Speaker 2: What did you think of that?
- 41:22Speaker 1: I haven't heard it yet.
- 41:24Speaker 2: He's got a great voice. Oh, Mau P! Yeah, I
- 41:26Speaker 2: know Mau P. Sorry. Mau P, his real name's Morris West.
- 41:32Speaker 2: And he used to play my type of music. It's
- 41:35Speaker 2: like banging, kind of euphoric thing. And now he's gone
- 41:38Speaker 2: quite techie and quite cool. and Drugs from Amsterdam's his
- 41:42Speaker 2: big tune but yeah he's he's a big kind of
- 41:47Speaker 2: techno DJ at the moment and he's doing really really
- 41:49Speaker 2: well so what was the track called?
- 41:51Speaker 1: It was just a general house mix from him there
- 41:54Speaker 1: was no it was just Mopi he's obviously been listening
- 41:57Speaker 1: to him while he's been away so we need a
- 41:59Speaker 1: film off you a song and an album.
- 42:02Speaker 2: My favourite film my favourite film is Random right probably
- 42:07Speaker 2: because of the the industry I work in But you
- 42:10Speaker 2: know the DJ Howard Stern in America, he did a
- 42:13Speaker 2: film called Private Parts, which I just loved, loved it.
- 42:17Speaker 2: It's my favorite movie ever because I can relate to everything.
- 42:21Speaker 2: It'd be like you guys watching a football movie, right?
- 42:24Speaker 2: You can relate to it because if it was a
- 42:28Speaker 2: footballer that was doing it, you'd be like, okay, I
- 42:30Speaker 2: totally get that. And there's so many... like quirky things
- 42:33Speaker 2: that happened in radio that I thought oh my god
- 42:34Speaker 2: that happened to me and that happened to me and
- 42:36Speaker 2: stuff like that and how he got into it and
- 42:38Speaker 2: how he became this.
- 42:39Speaker 1: That was quite old I know it was up in
- 42:41Speaker 1: the 90s yes.
- 42:42Speaker 2: It was late 90s it was actually came out the
- 42:45Speaker 2: year I started doing the breakfast show so it must
- 42:47Speaker 2: have been just 97 because I'd just started doing the
- 42:50Speaker 2: breakfast show I've maybe seen it does he play himself
- 42:53Speaker 2: in it does he yes he does play himself and
- 42:56Speaker 2: I just loved it and I tried to control him
- 42:58Speaker 2: WMBC yeah that's right and they were trying to control
- 43:02Speaker 2: him and saying this is how you're going to and
- 43:03Speaker 2: I was going through something quite similar I didn't go
- 43:05Speaker 2: quite as radical as him but something quite similar at
- 43:08Speaker 2: the time when I just started doing the breakfast show you.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Know the guy had thought having sex on his show.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Yeah i get i wouldn't be doing that clean one.
- 43:18Speaker 1: At breakfast you know i.
- 43:21Speaker 2: Think there was a bit where a woman um sat
- 43:24Speaker 2: on a speaker and he had sex with her over
- 43:28Speaker 2: the radio so he was like but this is all
- 43:33Speaker 2: true i'd read the book i'd read the book i've
- 43:36Speaker 2: read his autobiography and i thought I wonder what the
- 43:38Speaker 2: film will be like. And it was great. It was
- 43:39Speaker 2: just a great movie. So that's one. Rather than recommending
- 43:42Speaker 2: something that everyone's heard of.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Yeah, cool. Song and an album.
- 43:47Speaker 2: Do you know what my favourite album is ever? And
- 43:49Speaker 2: I always go back to it. And again, it's a
- 43:52Speaker 2: random one because it's a movie soundtrack. But see Kevin
- 43:55Speaker 2: and Perry go large. The soundtrack of that. That soundtrack
- 44:02Speaker 2: of that is just incredible it's just all big euphoric
- 44:07Speaker 2: trans classics and it's just like it's the most amazing
- 44:11Speaker 2: album of just tune after tune after tune that's like my.
- 44:15Speaker 7: Favourite album ever and song to finish a song to
- 44:18Speaker 7: finish difficult one it's a difficult one for me like
- 44:23Speaker 7: one of the greatest tunes ever written and I'm probably
- 44:27Speaker 7: the girl that sings it so I've told her this
- 44:29Speaker 7: before but Entrance 73 is like it's just a song yeah.
- 44:33Speaker 2: The most perfect song, particularly TTF's remix of it, which
- 44:37Speaker 2: was incredible. And it was just like, it stood the
- 44:40Speaker 2: test of time. If you listen to a lot of
- 44:42Speaker 2: those songs from that era, you say, well, that sounds
- 44:45Speaker 2: dead dated now, but that just sounds fresh as ever,
- 44:47Speaker 2: even now, you know what I mean? And Kelly, the
- 44:49Speaker 2: girl that sang it, is a good pal of mine,
- 44:50Speaker 2: and her voice on it is just incredible.
- 44:54Speaker 1: It's a good song. That'll be the song over the
- 44:56Speaker 1: post on social media.
- 44:57Speaker 2: Ah, there you go.
- 44:58Speaker 1: It's a classic.
- 44:58Speaker 2: See what you did there?
- 45:00Speaker 1: Anyway, thanks for coming in.
- 45:01Speaker 2: Thank you very much. Great to see you.
- 45:02Speaker 1: Wish you all the best in the future, mate. I'll
- 45:04Speaker 1: see you at the new studios.
- 45:04Speaker 2: I guess look forward to it and check you. Great
- 45:06Speaker 2: seeing you. My mum always here.
