Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, and welcome to the Mic Drop podcast. I'm
0:21
Speaker 1: Sari Beliak, your host, and we're off to a good
0:25
Speaker 1: start already. I'm so excited because The comedian that we
0:29
Speaker 1: have this week is not only super hilarious and funny,
0:32
Speaker 1: he's also a friend of mine. At least I think
0:36
Speaker 1: we're friends. I hope so. Maybe it's just like a
0:38
Speaker 1: parasocial relationship online. I'm so excited. Please welcome Ryan Rogers. Yay!
0:44
Speaker 2: My God, thank you for having me. Let me clear
0:46
Speaker 2: that up top that we are friends and I absolutely
0:49
Speaker 2: adore you. You are one of the, especially in standup comedy,
0:53
Speaker 2: you don't meet people off the bat who are so
0:55
Speaker 2: kind and warm and like carry the light that you do.
0:58
Speaker 2: And you're wonderful. Big fan.
0:59
Speaker 1: I'll be doing the complimenting here and making people uncomfortable.
1:05
Speaker 1: This is the Sari show. I'm so excited that you're
1:10
Speaker 1: here and that you're coming to visit us in Chandler.
1:14
Speaker 1: Have you ever been to Arizona before? Have you performed
1:16
Speaker 1: in Arizona yet?
1:19
Speaker 2: I thought I hadn't. I was like, well, I've never
1:22
Speaker 2: been to Arizona. This is my first time. I'm so excited.
1:24
Speaker 2: My husband was like, no, dumbass. We went to the
1:27
Speaker 2: Grand Canyon. I was like, oh, you're so right. I
1:31
Speaker 2: forgot that when we moved from San Francisco to New
1:34
Speaker 2: Orleans during the pandemic, that we had done a lot
1:36
Speaker 2: of cross-country sightseeing and stuff. And so that was one
1:40
Speaker 2: of our stops. And I completely blocked that out. But yes,
1:44
Speaker 2: I've been to Arizona. I never first came to comedy, though.
1:46
Speaker 2: This is my first time.
1:48
Speaker 1: Oh, that's very exciting. So are you from New Orleans?
1:52
Speaker 1: I was thinking you are originally from New Orleans. Is
1:55
Speaker 1: that right?
1:56
Speaker 2: That's right. I was born and raised in New Orleans,
1:58
Speaker 2: which a lot of people don't know people can be
2:00
Speaker 2: from here. It's kind of like Vegas, where you can
2:02
Speaker 2: be from New Orleans. Yes, I was born and raised
2:05
Speaker 2: in the city. Hurricane Katrina was my senior year in
2:08
Speaker 2: high school. So I bounced around a little bit after that.
2:11
Speaker 2: I stayed in Louisiana for college and then stuck around,
2:15
Speaker 2: worked here in the advertising industry for a bit. And
2:18
Speaker 2: then around 2017, moved to San Francisco and worked for Google. Oh, wow.
2:29
Speaker 2: And I worked for Google Ads and YouTube. And I
2:33
Speaker 2: was the messaging lead on the 2018 Global Google Pride campaign.
2:37
Speaker 2: And then I was a creative director at Pandora, the
2:39
Speaker 2: music app. And then I've since worked in some kind
2:43
Speaker 2: of advertising capacity as a day job.
2:45
Speaker 1: Oh, wow. So you've had like real grownup jobs.
2:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, I have, whether I like it or not.
2:52
Speaker 1: Not just the comedian, which I feel like is like a,
2:55
Speaker 1: it's like the child's dream, you know, like working for
2:58
Speaker 1: chicken fingers and tickets. Like you've had like legit good jobs.
3:04
Speaker 2: I have. I'm very proud of my resume and my portfolio.
3:08
Speaker 2: It's taken a lot of work. I had a very
3:10
Speaker 2: unhealthy relationship with work and my relationship with stand-up comedy
3:13
Speaker 2: is the same and requires the same discipline to pull
3:17
Speaker 2: back and restructure and find some harmony. But it's always
3:24
Speaker 2: been that way with me in my career. I throw
3:26
Speaker 2: myself into it and then my significant other or family
3:29
Speaker 2: or whatever has to check me quite often to find
3:33
Speaker 2: the balance. Yeah.
3:34
Speaker 1: One thing I remember, so I initially saw you, I
3:37
Speaker 1: met you at Altercation Comedy Festival. Shout out JT Haberset.
3:42
Speaker 1: That's a wonderful festival in Austin. I don't remember if
3:45
Speaker 1: it was two years ago or three years ago that
3:47
Speaker 1: I met you.
3:48
Speaker 2: I think it's got to be two because I've only
3:52
Speaker 2: done two. Did you do two years in a row?
3:55
Speaker 1: I did.
3:56
Speaker 2: I had so much fun the first time I needed
3:59
Speaker 2: to come back. And so I got to headline this
4:02
Speaker 2: previous October and it was, I can't say enough good
4:05
Speaker 2: things about JT and that festival, you know, the vibes
4:08
Speaker 2: at that festival are like the, I think it's one
4:10
Speaker 2: of the best comedy festivals in America, hands down. It
4:13
Speaker 2: has to be.
4:14
Speaker 1: It's definitely a special place for like, I mean, I,
4:17
Speaker 1: I was going to say for old Austin, I have
4:20
Speaker 1: no business saying that. Cause I obviously don't know much
4:24
Speaker 1: about the scene beforehand, but JT is actually in Phoenix
4:28
Speaker 1: right now. And I got to hang out with him and,
4:31
Speaker 1: He was like, you know, we were talking about the
4:33
Speaker 1: festival and that it's like kind of this like remaining,
4:36
Speaker 1: holding on, keeping the like old part of Austin before,
4:41
Speaker 1: I guess it became kind of the like Kill Tony
4:44
Speaker 1: and what it is now.
4:46
Speaker 2: It shocked me too, because I still try to work
4:51
Speaker 2: at other clubs after all. I made the mistake last year.
4:55
Speaker 2: of when we met that year where you were recording
4:58
Speaker 2: your album, I believe. And I made the mistake of
5:01
Speaker 2: like overbooking myself and not really enjoying the festival for
5:04
Speaker 2: what it was. And so I corrected that this year
5:07
Speaker 2: and I headlined the first night and I stuck around
5:10
Speaker 2: the entire weekend and I went to everything. But I
5:12
Speaker 2: was shocked to learn that a lot of the Austin
5:15
Speaker 2: comics who do Creek and Cave and Mothership, God forbid,
5:19
Speaker 2: or Sunset Strip had no idea what altercation was. And
5:21
Speaker 2: I was like, this is the, what are you talking about?
5:24
Speaker 2: This is by far the best opportunity for comedians in Austin.
5:27
Speaker 2: I love it so much.
5:29
Speaker 1: It's so fun. Cause it feels like, uh, just like
5:32
Speaker 1: a family reunion of like weirdos and weirdos. It's not
5:39
Speaker 1: like an industry festival. There's definitely some where it's like,
5:42
Speaker 1: if you're trying to be seen or you're trying to
5:44
Speaker 1: like network and work with an agent, it's not, I
5:47
Speaker 1: don't feel like it's one of those, but, But you
5:52
Speaker 1: meet just like the nicest people and you see the
5:56
Speaker 1: best lineups.
5:57
Speaker 2: Of- The comedians are so funny.
6:00
Speaker 1: Unique up and coming people. Yeah. It's always a good
6:06
Speaker 1: time there.
6:08
Speaker 2: I wear my altercation status like a badge of honor. Really? Yeah. Well,
6:12
Speaker 2: in October, in the same month, I did altercation and
6:16
Speaker 2: skank fest. Mm-hmm. And it was polar opposite vibes. And
6:21
Speaker 2: it just made me appreciate altercation so much more. I
6:25
Speaker 2: just was, I carry it in my heart. I think
6:27
Speaker 2: it's a wonderful place that blows me away every time.
6:31
Speaker 1: Yeah. I remember from the first year you were talking
6:36
Speaker 1: back to your jobs, your resume, you talked about on
6:41
Speaker 1: stage being a yoga teacher.
6:43
Speaker 2: Yeah.
6:45
Speaker 1: And I remember that because I also started as a
6:47
Speaker 1: yoga teacher. But you had a hilarious story about, well,
6:53
Speaker 1: I don't know. I don't want to spoil it for
6:55
Speaker 1: you if it's like material you're still doing. But it
6:57
Speaker 1: was so funny talking about like teaching while you were
7:02
Speaker 1: high out of your mind.
7:04
Speaker 2: That is true. I wish I wish I were joking
7:07
Speaker 2: about that. But yeah, you being a yoga teacher, I've
7:10
Speaker 2: never heard anything less surprising.
7:12
Speaker 1: Really? Yeah.
7:13
Speaker 2: Of course you were.
7:13
Speaker 1: Yeah, dude.
7:14
Speaker 2: Come on. Have you met you?
7:16
Speaker 1: Do you mean that in a nice way?
7:18
Speaker 2: I mean it as the highest compliment. I mean that.
7:22
Speaker 2: I think, I don't know. Yeah, but when I was
7:26
Speaker 2: living in San Francisco at the time and teaching yoga
7:28
Speaker 2: and I'd gone through teacher training, but I was at
7:30
Speaker 2: the height of like my cocaine addiction. I hadn't gotten
7:33
Speaker 2: sober yet. I've been sober for five years now from
7:35
Speaker 2: like drugs and alcohol. But at the time it was
7:38
Speaker 2: like real bad. but I was like doing Coke and
7:41
Speaker 2: then like teaching yoga, which is like the craziest shit
7:44
Speaker 2: anyone could do. It was, it was really bad. And
7:48
Speaker 2: it's like, it is a story to be honest, like
7:50
Speaker 2: a lot of those jokes about my addiction come from
7:53
Speaker 2: a serious place of like sadness and darkness and like
7:56
Speaker 2: not a proud period of my life. But when I
7:59
Speaker 2: started doing standup, I actually started, I've only been doing
8:02
Speaker 2: standup for like maybe four and a half years. I've
8:05
Speaker 2: been doing it that though. Yeah, I know. I'm really good.
8:07
Speaker 2: Aren't you impressed?
8:08
Speaker 1: You're really good.
8:10
Speaker 2: Yeah. Thank you. But I, it's, I started doing standup
8:13
Speaker 2: the week I got sober. I had like checked into,
8:17
Speaker 2: I started going to NA, Narcotics Anonymous. And that same
8:20
Speaker 2: week I was like, I hit my first mic and
8:22
Speaker 2: it was over, but I took it really seriously. So
8:24
Speaker 2: I processed a lot of my addiction stuff through standup
8:27
Speaker 2: where those are some of the first jokes I really wrote,
8:28
Speaker 2: like in my first year of comedy. about doing cocaine
8:32
Speaker 2: on you, uh, doing, teaching yoga on cocaine and like
8:34
Speaker 2: doing coke off of my phone and then realizing we
8:37
Speaker 2: were on Facebook live. Like those are all true stories
8:39
Speaker 2: that I have made. I've made more accessible and like
8:42
Speaker 2: palatable to an audience, but yeah, it's all true. It
8:45
Speaker 2: helped me process it. It helped me, it helped heal
8:47
Speaker 2: my marriage and like come to terms with some of
8:51
Speaker 2: the crazy shit I did in my active addiction, but
8:55
Speaker 2: make it, make it for people. And you have no
8:58
Speaker 2: idea how many, I mean, you do, you're a comic,
9:00
Speaker 2: how sometimes shit reaches people and you don't, you don't
9:03
Speaker 2: mean for it to, but some people come up after
9:05
Speaker 2: shows and they're like, dude, me too. Like I've been
9:07
Speaker 2: clean for 20 years or whatever. That sounded a lot
9:10
Speaker 2: like me. That happens all the time.
9:13
Speaker 1: It's amazing to me. I mean, to know that you've
9:15
Speaker 1: only been in it for such a short time, but
9:19
Speaker 1: that you started comedy right around the same time. Like, Obviously,
9:24
Speaker 1: I'm sure you've been to a lot of mics and
9:26
Speaker 1: somebody is like, hey, I just, I'm going through a
9:29
Speaker 1: divorce and this is my therapy. Or like, I'm gonna,
9:32
Speaker 1: that's insane that you actually used comedy as like a,
9:38
Speaker 1: I don't, coping mechanism or a way to like get
9:40
Speaker 1: through all that.
9:41
Speaker 2: Totally.
9:42
Speaker 1: It seems like it's going very well for you.
9:46
Speaker 2: I think that's very sweet. I try to do, some
9:49
Speaker 2: of the harder things that I have to face are,
9:52
Speaker 2: And a lot of times challenges that are happening inside
9:55
Speaker 2: of my marriage or with friends or with work, I
9:59
Speaker 2: have to. there's no other choice I have to process
10:02
Speaker 2: it through like make it a bit you have to
10:05
Speaker 2: make this a bit you have to figure it out
10:07
Speaker 2: because that way you'll get over it quicker that I
10:10
Speaker 2: mean it's selfish but it is also like We have
10:13
Speaker 2: to find where this is funny. And usually I can't,
10:16
Speaker 2: I mean, it's crazy to go up on stage today
10:18
Speaker 2: after getting like fired from a job and like try
10:20
Speaker 2: to process it on stage. You're not ready yet, but
10:22
Speaker 2: you are ready to like write it, write it out.
10:25
Speaker 2: And over time develop it. And over time come to
10:28
Speaker 2: terms with it through like the literal processing of the event.
10:32
Speaker 1: I'm, I'm so fascinated by that. Cause I feel like there,
10:35
Speaker 1: there's been like heavy stuff that I've gone through and
10:37
Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm not ready to talk about it yet.
10:39
Speaker 1: And it'll be a while. Cause I'm like, I don't
10:41
Speaker 1: know how I feel about it yet.
10:43
Speaker 2: Yeah, totally.
10:44
Speaker 1: I'm still, so it's like, how do I expect an
10:46
Speaker 1: audience full of people that are like maybe half paying
10:48
Speaker 1: attention for them to be like, Oh, I get it.
10:50
Speaker 1: And I love it.
10:53
Speaker 2: It's like anything though. I respect that. I think that's,
10:56
Speaker 2: that's what your reaction is like a normal person. Like that,
11:00
Speaker 2: that is what you should do is that is not
11:02
Speaker 2: like throw it out there. But I try to like
11:04
Speaker 2: a lot of like, I'm not an actor, but like,
11:08
Speaker 2: I've heard that a lot of acting and improv and
11:11
Speaker 2: whatever is making decisions. And so I will often make
11:14
Speaker 2: up my mind about how I feel immediately and be like,
11:17
Speaker 2: it's like, it's the cancer in me. It's being like emotional,
11:20
Speaker 2: but also like, how do I cut through this? And
11:22
Speaker 2: so a lot of times I'll just decide immediately, like
11:25
Speaker 2: I'm mad about being laid off and here's why. And
11:27
Speaker 2: I'm going to start from there. I don't have time
11:30
Speaker 2: to flip flop on like, how do I feel about
11:31
Speaker 2: it personally? Only because I'm like, I need to get
11:35
Speaker 2: over this or else I get over, I get consumed
11:37
Speaker 2: by my emotions. So I try to like cut through
11:40
Speaker 2: it and like process it.
11:42
Speaker 1: I'm surprised cancer. I think I would have guessed Gemini,
11:44
Speaker 1: but I, I don't.
11:46
Speaker 2: Have it in my chart. Isn't that crazy?
11:48
Speaker 1: None at all.
11:49
Speaker 2: I identify a lot of with like, if I'm reading,
11:52
Speaker 2: which I'm not very into astrology, but if I happen
11:56
Speaker 2: to come across like a scannable, whatever's going on, I
12:00
Speaker 2: identify with the Gemini stuff a lot. I'm quite often.
12:03
Speaker 2: I'm like, Oh, that sounds like me. That sounds like
12:04
Speaker 2: what I'm going through. But my chart is I'm Cancer, Sun, Leo, Moon, Sag, Rising.
12:11
Speaker 1: Okay, the Leo, Moon. Yeah. My friend Stina is like
12:16
Speaker 1: an astrology maven. And I could see her just being like, yes,
12:20
Speaker 1: the Leo, I see it. You're like such a big performer.
12:24
Speaker 1: I don't remember like what the bits were, but you
12:28
Speaker 1: were like doing act outs when you were talking about
12:30
Speaker 1: teaching yoga. And it was just like, like snorting cocaine
12:34
Speaker 1: and like, okay guys, breathe. And I was like.
12:37
Speaker 2: Here's how that, here's how that joke actually started, which
12:40
Speaker 2: is way funnier than the truth. The joke actually started
12:43
Speaker 2: because I found out that David Fincher directed the music
12:48
Speaker 2: video for Vogue by Madonna. That's how the joke started.
12:52
Speaker 2: And I thought that was crazy. And then it led
12:54
Speaker 2: me down like a rabbit hole of David Fincher's filmography
12:56
Speaker 2: and the music videos he's directed. And then like Spike Jones,
13:00
Speaker 2: the music videos he's directed and Francis Lawrence, who are
13:02
Speaker 2: Do you know who Francis Lawrence is?
13:04
Speaker 1: No.
13:05
Speaker 2: Francis Lawrence directed the Hunger Games franchise. He's a wonderful director.
13:09
Speaker 2: But if you go to his IMDb, he has also
13:11
Speaker 2: directed every music video you've ever heard of. Like literally
13:15
Speaker 2: Smells Like Teen Spirit, Garbage. No, seriously. But like David
13:19
Speaker 2: Fincher had also directed that Vogue, the Vogue music video.
13:24
Speaker 2: David Fincher directed it. He also directed Suit and Tie
13:28
Speaker 2: by Justin Timberlake. But he's also the director of like
13:32
Speaker 2: the social network and like Zodiac and Benjamin Button and whatever.
13:37
Speaker 2: So the joke started because I wanted to deliver that
13:40
Speaker 2: information to an audience because I thought it was fucking crazy.
13:43
Speaker 2: So I wrapped it inside of, oh, when I was
13:46
Speaker 2: doing cocaine, I also taught yoga and I would tell
13:49
Speaker 2: the class, I would interject, I would interject coke head
13:53
Speaker 2: facts into my yoga class. So that's how it started
13:56
Speaker 2: because I was like, well, I think this is insane.
13:59
Speaker 2: And I think this premise I can like wedge. And
14:01
Speaker 2: sometimes that happens, you know that, where you'll marry two
14:04
Speaker 2: ideas just to like build out a joke.
14:08
Speaker 1: I also just love the idea, because I don't know
14:10
Speaker 1: if there's a lot of comedians that come from a
14:13
Speaker 1: yoga background, but I love the idea as comics, we're
14:16
Speaker 1: always taking any opportunity to run bits, like wherever, whenever.
14:21
Speaker 1: And I love thinking that it's like a yoga teacher
14:25
Speaker 1: picturing just like I'm gonna sneak in my jokes and
14:28
Speaker 1: see but also the fact that you were blown out
14:30
Speaker 1: of your mind.
14:31
Speaker 2: On cocaine is like I know.
14:33
Speaker 1: Even somehow even more magical of just like picturing a
14:36
Speaker 1: room full of people in the bay area like you
14:39
Speaker 1: know doing their sun salutations just kind of like what.
14:42
Speaker 2: The fuck really totally I would I would show up
14:45
Speaker 2: in like a hoodie and running shorts to teach it
14:47
Speaker 2: I was out of my mind like I did not
14:49
Speaker 2: know what I was doing Did you ever teach yoga
14:52
Speaker 2: while you were doing standup? Like in the same time period,
14:55
Speaker 2: like were you doing standup and teaching at the same time?
14:58
Speaker 2: That's what I'm trying to say.
14:59
Speaker 1: There was a little bit of overlap. Like around the
15:04
Speaker 1: time I started doing comedy, it was like sort of
15:07
Speaker 1: the end of, of teaching yoga.
15:11
Speaker 2: Same, but I had just started doing comedy and I
15:16
Speaker 2: was kind of easing out of yoga and But I
15:19
Speaker 2: did find it so helpful to go up in front
15:22
Speaker 2: of a class and talk, not like do dialogue and
15:25
Speaker 2: queuing for an hour. And then I had to go
15:27
Speaker 2: on stage and do five minutes. So I was like, oh,
15:29
Speaker 2: that's nothing. Like to me, I was like, I would use,
15:32
Speaker 2: I literally, there was a period where there was a
15:33
Speaker 2: Tuesday night mic. I would teach yoga at the 6 p.m.
15:36
Speaker 2: class and go straight to the mic. And so I
15:38
Speaker 2: found it effortless to like do stand up because I
15:41
Speaker 2: was new at it. So I was like, oh, well,
15:43
Speaker 2: this is.
15:44
Speaker 1: Yeah, I guess in a way there is similarities because
15:47
Speaker 1: you're not always getting like a response like you're talking
15:51
Speaker 1: and obviously they're hopefully following the cues, but they're not
15:54
Speaker 1: like nodding their heads along with what you're saying or reacting.
16:02
Speaker 1: That's interesting. I hadn't thought of it.
16:05
Speaker 2: It's true though. I mean, I was going to Narcotics
16:07
Speaker 2: Anonymous meetings and teaching yoga when I started doing standup
16:11
Speaker 2: and both of those things fed. Like both of them
16:13
Speaker 2: were like, I mean, an AA or NA meeting is
16:16
Speaker 2: the same thing as an open mic. You get a
16:18
Speaker 2: list and a four minute time limit and you get
16:20
Speaker 2: a bell and that's it. And like, to be honest,
16:23
Speaker 2: like a lot of my NA meetings were funnier than
16:26
Speaker 2: the mic, which isn't a joke. I'm not doing a
16:29
Speaker 2: bit that is real, but they helped.
16:33
Speaker 1: Um, from following you on Instagram, your, your social media
16:37
Speaker 1: is super funny and I, I love that it's very, um,
16:41
Speaker 1: it's such a tribute to New Orleans. I feel like your,
16:43
Speaker 1: your comedy is very, it's like a love letter to
16:46
Speaker 1: New Orleans, but I know recently you were, was it
16:50
Speaker 1: like an MC for Mardi Gras or?
16:52
Speaker 2: Not even that. Um, there's an event without getting in
16:56
Speaker 2: the weeds. There's an event in New Orleans during Mardi
16:58
Speaker 2: Gras called the greasing of the poles and which happens
17:01
Speaker 2: at the Royal Sinesta in the French Quarter on Bourbon Street.
17:04
Speaker 2: And they basically, it was a tactic to grease the
17:08
Speaker 2: poles in front during Mardi Gras so that people on
17:11
Speaker 2: Bourbon Street, drunk people, wouldn't climb up them during like
17:14
Speaker 2: the festivities. So they grease them with Vaseline so people
17:17
Speaker 2: can't do it. They have since evolved it into a
17:19
Speaker 2: competition and like a stunt that is sponsored by like
17:23
Speaker 2: Moet Champagne. And like, it is like a whole thing now.
17:26
Speaker 2: So I was asked to be a judge this year
17:29
Speaker 2: There was a wardrobe, and thousands of people come. The
17:32
Speaker 2: Bourbon Street is packed shoulder to shoulder, literally thousands of people.
17:38
Speaker 2: And you go up on stage, there's four people, they
17:40
Speaker 2: grease the poles, you judge them. It's like a fun
17:42
Speaker 2: kickoff event. The whole thing lasts like an hour and
17:44
Speaker 2: a half. But there was a wardrobe malfunction from one
17:48
Speaker 2: of the girls who was greasing. And when it happened,
17:50
Speaker 2: the host kind of punted, I'll say, to me. It
17:55
Speaker 2: was like, while we fix that, we're going to hear
17:56
Speaker 2: some jokes from Ryan Rogers. No prep. Like you would,
18:00
Speaker 2: anyone would die. He was walking up to me and
18:03
Speaker 2: I was just like, do not do this. Like in
18:05
Speaker 2: front of everyone. I was like, don't, don't, don't, don't.
18:08
Speaker 2: And he just hands me the mic. So I was like,
18:10
Speaker 2: fuck it. And I just stood up on the chairs
18:12
Speaker 2: and faced like one foot on each chair facing this
18:16
Speaker 2: crowd of thousands of people from the judging table. And
18:18
Speaker 2: I did like, I did like three minutes and just murdered.
18:24
Speaker 2: Cause I have enough local shit that I can be like,
18:27
Speaker 2: this part of New Orleans and that part and our
18:29
Speaker 2: mayor and whatever killing. So the general manager of the
18:35
Speaker 2: event came up to me as soon as that I
18:38
Speaker 2: handed the mic back and goes, we'd love for you
18:40
Speaker 2: to MC next year. Would you be interested in that?
18:42
Speaker 2: So it was like best case scenario.
18:43
Speaker 1: That is amazing.
18:45
Speaker 2: I saw the, it is amazing.
18:46
Speaker 1: I saw pictures from it and you truly like, you
18:49
Speaker 1: looked like you're like the mayor, like you're just in
18:51
Speaker 1: the middle of the crowd. And I was like that.
18:53
Speaker 2: That was a thank you. That was a, that I
18:55
Speaker 2: wore the tux that I wore to my wedding. That's
18:58
Speaker 2: my wedding tux. And I just put a gold crown
19:00
Speaker 2: on and it was a game time decision because I
19:02
Speaker 2: was going to wear this whole drag get up. And
19:05
Speaker 2: I woke up at 5am and start putting on makeup
19:07
Speaker 2: and I started doing it. And I was like, this
19:08
Speaker 2: isn't right. I don't, this is not going to be great.
19:11
Speaker 2: So I straight up was like, you know what? I
19:14
Speaker 2: think I've got a better idea. So I just did Tuts.
19:16
Speaker 2: So I look so official and so like cool.
19:19
Speaker 1: You did.
19:19
Speaker 2: I know it looks really cool.
19:20
Speaker 1: When I was saying that I saw you on the
19:23
Speaker 1: schedule for Mic Drop and I was like, I gotta
19:25
Speaker 1: reach out to Ryan. And I was like, it's also
19:27
Speaker 1: the middle of Mardi Gras. So I'll give him some
19:28
Speaker 1: time to like- I don't drink.
19:31
Speaker 2: So like, I'm not, I'm not, the funniest part about
19:33
Speaker 2: it is I was raised in this city and I
19:35
Speaker 2: am deeply ambivalent about Mardi Gras. I do not give
19:39
Speaker 2: a shit half the time. It is in the way-
19:42
Speaker 2: It's so annoying. We live on a parade route, so
19:45
Speaker 2: I can't escape it. I'm a sober person. There's nothing
19:47
Speaker 2: for me. I don't give a shit. And now I have, like,
19:50
Speaker 2: failed up into this, like, king of Mardi Gras status,
19:52
Speaker 2: what everyone knows me for. And I'm like, I don't
19:54
Speaker 2: give a shit about this holiday, guys. I just think
19:57
Speaker 2: it's funny.
19:58
Speaker 1: Did you get to see some fun stuff? Do you
20:01
Speaker 1: see people just, like, a titty hanging out, missing.
20:05
Speaker 2: A shoe, just, like, the.
20:08
Speaker 1: Totally worst of humanity. Yeah. Yeah.
20:11
Speaker 2: We, I don't go to the French quarter too much
20:13
Speaker 2: during Mardi Gras ever. I think that's like the craziest
20:16
Speaker 2: fucking thing anyone can do, but I live uptown on
20:18
Speaker 2: a parade route. So there are people in my front yard.
20:20
Speaker 2: I can watch parades without leaving my living room. Yeah. They,
20:23
Speaker 2: the big parades roll right by, like I live on
20:26
Speaker 2: the corner and they're right there. Um, like I'm not,
20:29
Speaker 2: it's not like blocks away. It's right in my yard.
20:31
Speaker 2: So I can't escape it, but I do see crazy shit. Um,
20:35
Speaker 2: but we had my siblings' babies at the house this year.
20:38
Speaker 2: So it was a very like, oh, there's the chaos
20:41
Speaker 2: of babies, unless like wasted people are throwing up in
20:44
Speaker 2: the bathroom. It was a very different, very adult vibe
20:47
Speaker 2: this year.
20:48
Speaker 1: Amazing. So great. I love it. We have a segment.
20:55
Speaker 1: I don't know if I warned you about this, but
20:57
Speaker 1: we have a little bit of trivia. How do you
20:59
Speaker 1: feel about that?
21:00
Speaker 2: Hit me.
21:00
Speaker 1: It's... I looked him over last night and I was like,
21:09
Speaker 1: I don't know. These are, you know, it's different questions
21:12
Speaker 1: each week. I feel like it's going to be a
21:17
Speaker 1: good one. You do have some sports questions in there.
21:19
Speaker 1: Are you a sports fan at all?
21:22
Speaker 2: Couldn't be further from it, but I'm willing to try.
21:25
Speaker 2: Unless you count drag race as a sport.
21:28
Speaker 1: I don't think there's any drag questions in there, but
21:31
Speaker 1: we'll see. So this is our good to know section.
21:33
Speaker 1: We're starting out strong. Name two of the World War
21:39
Speaker 1: II Axis powers. Oh, sure.
21:45
Speaker 2: Italy and Germany.
21:47
Speaker 1: Okay, Ryan. Okay, Ryan.
21:52
Speaker 2: I might be gay, but I'm still a white man.
21:56
Speaker 2: That information is in there. Yeah, I love it. Okay.
22:00
Speaker 1: I'm so sorry, but we have a sports question for you.
22:04
Speaker 1: I don't know this. Name a baseball team that has
22:08
Speaker 1: never won a World Series.
22:12
Speaker 2: The Angels?
22:15
Speaker 1: Are they on there? I don't see them on here.
22:17
Speaker 1: Do you want to try some other?
22:21
Speaker 2: A baseball team that has never won a World Series. Okay.
22:27
Speaker 2: Can I say the Oakland A's?
22:29
Speaker 1: You can. They're also not on this list.
22:32
Speaker 2: Damn it. Oh, God, I'm so gay.
22:36
Speaker 1: No. I was like, there's some other California teams on here.
22:40
Speaker 1: So some of the choices listed here, Colorado Rockies, Milwaukee Brewers,
22:45
Speaker 1: San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, and the Tampa Bay Rays.
22:50
Speaker 2: Dude, just a list of fucking losers.
22:53
Speaker 1: Yeah.
22:54
Speaker 2: Yeah. Terrible. Sorry.
22:58
Speaker 1: Sorry to any of those teams.
23:00
Speaker 2: If they're listening, how are you going to dedicate your
23:02
Speaker 2: life to the most boring sport on the planet and
23:04
Speaker 2: not even win?
23:06
Speaker 1: I mean, that's a great, that's a great question.
23:08
Speaker 2: That's so dumb. What a waste that they got their
23:11
Speaker 2: big fat asses and they're chewing tobacco and they can't
23:13
Speaker 2: even fucking win a world series. That sucks. Grow up. Yeah.
23:17
Speaker 1: Uh, Ryan Rogers, everyone will be, uh, at my cap.
23:20
Speaker 1: He's actually coming to some, uh, Some spring training games
23:24
Speaker 1: while he's in town so you can watch for him.
23:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, and if you're from San Diego, tell your team
23:30
Speaker 2: to do better.
23:31
Speaker 1: I think the San Francisco Giants, I think they're a team.
23:35
Speaker 1: And I think that they practice here. So maybe you
23:38
Speaker 1: can check out a game while you're here.
23:39
Speaker 2: Actually, I love Minute Maid Park. Is that right? Did
23:42
Speaker 2: I make that up? I'm pretty sure that's a park.
23:45
Speaker 2: Is that in Houston?
23:46
Speaker 1: I've never heard of Minute Maid Park. That sounds like
23:48
Speaker 1: something you just made up.
23:50
Speaker 2: Ask me a fucking drag race question, goddamn.
23:55
Speaker 1: Okay, this is a good one. Who shot JFK? Again,
23:58
Speaker 1: I don't come up with these questions, but.
24:00
Speaker 2: It's, okay, damn it.
24:03
Speaker 1: Or who do you think, who do you think shot JFK?
24:06
Speaker 2: First of all, the answer is the FBI. However, I
24:11
Speaker 2: want to say, is it Lee Harvey Oswald? Yeah. No,
24:16
Speaker 2: is it? Yeah.
24:16
Speaker 1: Yeah. It is. Okay.
24:18
Speaker 2: Hell yeah.
24:19
Speaker 1: Allegedly, anyway. We'll say allegedly. But it could be somebody
24:22
Speaker 1: from Drag.
24:23
Speaker 2: Race, maybe. We don't know. Yeah, it was Jada Essence
24:27
Speaker 2: Hall shot JFK. It's crazy.
24:31
Speaker 1: It was Katya, I bet. I wish. Okay. I'm so sorry,
24:36
Speaker 1: but there's another sports question. How many cities have the
24:41
Speaker 1: Raiders played in?
24:42
Speaker 2: Detroit? Detroit?
24:46
Speaker 1: In L.A.? Okay, we got one of them in there.
24:51
Speaker 1: I feel like that should be... How many?
24:57
Speaker 2: Is it three or two?
24:59
Speaker 1: It is three. Okay.
25:01
Speaker 2: And I would even reword that question like, what cities
25:05
Speaker 2: has the Raiders, you know, represented?
25:08
Speaker 1: Because they played everywhere.
25:11
Speaker 2: Yeah. Is it like... So, L.A.? And, man, this is
25:20
Speaker 2: killing me. Where? Where are they playing?
25:23
Speaker 1: Oakland and Las Vegas. I think they're currently in Las Vegas.
25:26
Speaker 1: Is that right? Yes.
25:28
Speaker 2: The Oakland Raiders sounds wrong. That sounds wrong. That sounds
25:34
Speaker 2: like a Utah Jazz situation. Like, something got fucked up
25:38
Speaker 2: along the way. You know what I'm saying?
25:39
Speaker 1: Yeah.
25:42
Speaker 2: In New Orleans, we had the Hornets for a while.
25:45
Speaker 2: Charlotte had the Hornets, and we had them, and then
25:46
Speaker 2: they went back to Charlotte. But I just found out
25:49
Speaker 2: that the Charlotte Hornets girls dance team, not girls, I'm sorry.
25:52
Speaker 2: It's probably more inclusive now. The dance team for the
25:55
Speaker 2: Hornets is called the Honeybees. How confusing is that?
25:58
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
25:59
Speaker 2: That is pretty confusing. That's wrong.
26:01
Speaker 1: I think Siri got stuck. No. That's okay. We'll wait
26:09
Speaker 1: for her to return. But no, I agree with you
26:11
Speaker 1: that also the Minute Maid park was in Houston. And
26:14
Speaker 1: you're back!
26:15
Speaker 2: I'm back.
26:15
Speaker 1: I could hear you guys. I just was frozen.
26:18
Speaker 2: Oh, we were killing over here. We were cutting up.
26:22
Speaker 1: I like to freeze in really unflattering spaces. That's my
26:26
Speaker 1: favorite on the podcast for people to watch.
26:30
Speaker 2: People love that.
26:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, when I was going to school in Santa Cruz,
26:34
Speaker 1: I remember people, there were like die-hard... Oakland Raiders fans
26:39
Speaker 1: like that would not you couldn't say anything to them
26:42
Speaker 1: and they were they were.
26:44
Speaker 2: Fanatical well tell Oakland that I used to work there
26:49
Speaker 2: in Oakland for a while at Pandora and I love
26:52
Speaker 2: their town because they don't call it a city they
26:56
Speaker 2: call it a town the town of Oakland the city
26:58
Speaker 2: of San Francisco um see I know that Did you get.
27:03
Speaker 1: Into like hyphy music when you were there? I feel
27:05
Speaker 1: like you know a lot about like bounce music and
27:07
Speaker 1: New Orleans.
27:09
Speaker 2: Some, I have respect for a lot of the obvious
27:13
Speaker 2: like Oakland rappers and stuff, but I'm so, I'm so
27:17
Speaker 2: loyal to like cash money and no limit. I just,
27:23
Speaker 2: I actually just opened for Whitney Cummings at the joy
27:25
Speaker 2: theater here. And I was like really stressing about what
27:28
Speaker 2: my walk-up music was going to be.
27:30
Speaker 1: I love it.
27:31
Speaker 2: And then I landed on a song by DJ Jubilee.
27:35
Speaker 2: It's get it ready, get it ready, get it ready.
27:37
Speaker 2: I don't know if you guys have that or know that,
27:38
Speaker 2: but it's like a, it's like a very, very big,
27:41
Speaker 2: like weddings. Like they played at weddings a lot here
27:44
Speaker 2: and people lose their shit. And like this, it was,
27:47
Speaker 2: it was very our coming of age. And so I
27:49
Speaker 2: lean into that a lot where I'm like, if it's
27:51
Speaker 2: local and there's like a thousand people, I'm walking out
27:55
Speaker 2: to a local rap song. I don't care how gay
27:56
Speaker 2: I am. I don't give a shit. And I grabbed
27:59
Speaker 2: the mic, because I was going to play some gay
28:01
Speaker 2: shit to walk up to Whitney Cummings. But then I
28:03
Speaker 2: was like, now I think this is right. And I
28:06
Speaker 2: grabbed the mic. It was like 1,200 people. And I
28:08
Speaker 2: was just like, New Orleans makes some bucking noise. They
28:11
Speaker 2: lose their mind. And I told the DJ, I'm like,
28:13
Speaker 2: keep playing it until I cue you. And then I
28:14
Speaker 2: was like, I requested this song just for you. Stand up.
28:17
Speaker 2: That's our national anthem. Well, I love that. I know.
28:20
Speaker 2: I'll pander with music like that. Obvious. It's like a
28:23
Speaker 2: cheat code. Comics, I don't know. I feel like there's
28:25
Speaker 2: so many... hats to the system with standup comedy where
28:28
Speaker 2: like comedians forget that this is a performance.
28:32
Speaker 1: Yeah.
28:32
Speaker 2: It's a performance. People paid money to be here. It's
28:34
Speaker 2: not just about your setup punchlines and your timing. This
28:37
Speaker 2: is fun. They want to have fun. They want to
28:39
Speaker 2: feel included.
28:40
Speaker 1: They just want to laugh.
28:42
Speaker 2: They just want to laugh. And I, dude, we can,
28:45
Speaker 2: we don't have to get into it, but there's so
28:46
Speaker 2: many like straight white guy open micers. And like, I'm
28:49
Speaker 2: being very like, how do I put this? I'm boxing
28:53
Speaker 2: them in, but like, I don't feel bad about it
28:55
Speaker 2: where it's like, There's so much that like, and it's
28:58
Speaker 2: not exclusive to them, but they stick out where it's
29:00
Speaker 2: just like, give these people a fucking show. Give them
29:04
Speaker 2: a show. Yeah. Come on.
29:07
Speaker 1: I know.
29:07
Speaker 2: Where's the joy?
29:09
Speaker 1: Every once in a while I'm like, hey, remember when
29:11
Speaker 1: you started comedy because you wanted to make people laugh?
29:14
Speaker 2: Totally. And it's like sullen, sad boy. Like, and I'm like, ew.
29:20
Speaker 1: Yeah. Do you have any idea of music, like walk
29:24
Speaker 1: up music for when you're coming to see us in Chandler?
29:27
Speaker 2: My go-to lately, and when I say lately, I mean
29:29
Speaker 2: like maybe the past year, has been bongos.
29:32
Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
29:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, Cardi and Megan Thee Stallion. I just
29:36
Speaker 2: think it's so fun. And you can start it anywhere,
29:39
Speaker 2: that's why I like it. it as a walk-up song
29:40
Speaker 2: like yeah if they fuck it up it's okay because
29:42
Speaker 2: it's fun.
29:43
Speaker 1: Okay good we'll get it queued up for you for for.
29:46
Speaker 2: When you when you come see us do you have
29:48
Speaker 2: a walk-up playlist do.
29:51
Speaker 1: I personally or like at mic drop um I think
29:56
Speaker 1: recently the DJ there asked me for a song and
30:00
Speaker 1: I was like in a weird mood and I asked
30:01
Speaker 1: for too short, blow the whistle. That's a fun one.
30:06
Speaker 2: Yeah. This is what I'm talking about. Yeah.
30:08
Speaker 1: I was really excited. Cause it was like, and I
30:11
Speaker 1: think they, they were surprised and I was like, I
30:14
Speaker 1: will wrap the whole song right now. Like forget my time.
30:18
Speaker 1: But I'm like, how do you not hear that song
30:20
Speaker 1: and get, get hyped up? I love it.
30:23
Speaker 2: My first walk up song was, that I chose without
30:26
Speaker 2: hesitation was Party Up by DMX. I was like, why
30:31
Speaker 2: wouldn't you use this? It feels like everyone should be
30:33
Speaker 2: using this. What are you talking about? No one is
30:35
Speaker 2: doing this. That's crazy. And then I did, go ahead.
30:39
Speaker 1: Oh, I was going to say, we should just make
30:40
Speaker 1: a playlist of walk-up songs.
30:42
Speaker 2: I have one. I'll send it to you.
30:46
Speaker 1: I worked with Amber Autry last year and she had
30:49
Speaker 1: like a fire playlist before the show. I think it
30:53
Speaker 1: was like, I asked her about it and she was like,
30:56
Speaker 1: it's like the gym baddies. Like everyone was having the
30:59
Speaker 1: best time just like dancing.
31:02
Speaker 2: We can't talk about Amber because we'll be here all day.
31:05
Speaker 2: I love Amber.
31:06
Speaker 1: We go way back. I met her.
31:10
Speaker 2: Oh my God. Like when I first started doing comedy,
31:13
Speaker 2: it's a very long story, but I was producing a
31:14
Speaker 2: show in Nashville. I asked for some local recs and
31:17
Speaker 2: she was one of them. And she was like, she
31:19
Speaker 2: was not the Amber Autry we know today. She was
31:21
Speaker 2: just as funny, but she had like, she didn't have
31:23
Speaker 2: hundreds and thousands of followers. You know what I mean?
31:25
Speaker 2: But you could tell you were like, she's going to
31:27
Speaker 2: be a star. Easy. So fun. 100%.
31:30
Speaker 1: No, I met her at a festival in Des Moines, Iowa.
31:34
Speaker 1: And it was like, white dude, white dude, white, like
31:36
Speaker 1: the same white dudes over and over. And then she
31:39
Speaker 1: came up and it was like a burst of energy.
31:42
Speaker 1: And I was like, Oh my God, this woman is phenomenal.
31:46
Speaker 1: And I, I bought some of her merch and I
31:48
Speaker 1: still have it. It's like, I'm like, this is like
31:50
Speaker 1: collector's item now.
31:52
Speaker 2: No, for real. There are very few comics that are like,
31:55
Speaker 2: not very few. That's rude that I've like paid for
31:58
Speaker 2: their merch and I like wear it proudly, but like
32:00
Speaker 2: daily Pope is one of them. Yes.
32:02
Speaker 1: Yes.
32:03
Speaker 2: Bailey, I wear her shirt all the time.
32:05
Speaker 1: Your merch is so sick, too.
32:06
Speaker 2: It's sick, yeah.
32:07
Speaker 1: Do you have the Pope one, like the tarot card?
32:09
Speaker 2: Of course I do. Oh, my God. I wear it
32:11
Speaker 2: all the time. I might wear it tonight on stage.
32:13
Speaker 2: I think it's so sick. I think she's cool. I
32:15
Speaker 2: have this new, I wish I could show you. It's
32:18
Speaker 2: in my room. But my new merch that I produced
32:21
Speaker 2: for Skank Fest. Calm down, everyone.
32:23
Speaker 1: Bring it to Chandler. I will.
32:26
Speaker 2: It's basically, I have this, there's a designer in Austin
32:29
Speaker 2: who does really cool custom metal merch. lettering but it's
32:32
Speaker 2: like top of the line like he can draws it
32:35
Speaker 2: and it is like it's the best version of like
32:38
Speaker 2: metal because you know you see really crappy ones it's
32:41
Speaker 2: amazing but i had this idea for merch for skank
32:43
Speaker 2: fest for t-shirts like ryan rogers branded on the back
32:46
Speaker 2: but across the front and like like fuchsia it just
32:52
Speaker 2: says straight girls and i think it's genius i'm like
32:56
Speaker 2: everybody would want this straight men straight women lesbians and
32:59
Speaker 2: gay guys done like we've covered all of our but
33:02
Speaker 2: it's so smart and a bunch of them sold and
33:04
Speaker 2: i love them like they're so it just has straight
33:06
Speaker 2: girls in metal.
33:08
Speaker 1: All right that's fantastic yeah bring.
33:10
Speaker 2: It cracked the merch code we did it bring it
33:12
Speaker 2: i'll bring.
33:14
Speaker 1: It i love it.
33:16
Speaker 2: Um so did i fail at this game.
33:18
Speaker 1: Well, we have a few. There's so many. I don't
33:21
Speaker 1: know why this is such a sports-heavy week. We'll have
33:23
Speaker 1: a chat with Carlos. Question number five. How many championships
33:28
Speaker 1: does Tom Brady have?
33:31
Speaker 2: Six?
33:34
Speaker 1: Really close. Seven. Why?
33:38
Speaker 2: Can we skip the sports ones?
33:41
Speaker 1: I don't know why I was thinking that.
33:44
Speaker 2: It's painting me out to be like a dumb bitch. Like,
33:46
Speaker 2: I don't love this.
33:47
Speaker 1: No, not at all. There's a Mariah Carey related question
33:51
Speaker 1: coming up.
33:52
Speaker 2: Thank God. I've watched this one too.
33:55
Speaker 1: I'm going to be like, uh, Detroit. Yeah. But first,
34:00
Speaker 1: how many seasons did Def Comedy Jam have?
34:06
Speaker 2: On television?
34:07
Speaker 1: I guess so. I didn't know the answer to this one.
34:09
Speaker 2: I'm going to say 25.
34:10
Speaker 1: Um, This, according to this, it says eight seasons. Did
34:15
Speaker 1: you ever, did you ever watch it?
34:17
Speaker 2: Some. I am very in my bag. I think it's
34:20
Speaker 2: Peacock or Paramount has all of the Comedy Central premium
34:23
Speaker 2: blends and Comedy Central presents. I know it is a,
34:27
Speaker 2: it is incredible. I don't know why standup comedians aren't
34:30
Speaker 2: all talking about this. They're all right there. You can
34:32
Speaker 2: watch like everyone's first Comedy Central 20 minute special right now.
34:37
Speaker 2: It's amazing. I used to love watching those. Well, it
34:41
Speaker 2: introduced us to everyone, like us, like that's how I
34:44
Speaker 2: got exposed to real standup at a young age. And like,
34:47
Speaker 2: they look and sound exactly the same. It is jarring.
34:51
Speaker 2: It's really like, I remember the first comedy special that
34:54
Speaker 2: I ever literally pissed my pants. Literally. I was at,
34:59
Speaker 2: I had friends sleeping over at my house and I,
35:01
Speaker 2: we're just watching comedy central. This guy came on and
35:04
Speaker 2: I just, I remember the bit to this day and I,
35:06
Speaker 2: I laughed so hard. I like, I was in like
35:09
Speaker 2: pajama pants, a little boy. And I pissed myself. I
35:12
Speaker 2: had to get up and change. And it was Brian Posehn.
35:14
Speaker 2: You know Brian Posehn?
35:15
Speaker 1: Oh my God, yes. That's who JT opens for.
35:19
Speaker 2: I ran into Brian Posehn when I was headlining at
35:23
Speaker 2: some bullshit show in Mobile, Alabama. And he was at
35:27
Speaker 2: the gig like across the road and we met in
35:29
Speaker 2: the lobby. And I was just like, we were staying
35:32
Speaker 2: at the same hotel. This was like six months ago.
35:34
Speaker 2: This was not long ago. And I told him what
35:36
Speaker 2: I just told you. I said, you, you were the first,
35:39
Speaker 2: you did it. Like you made, you fucking cracked me
35:42
Speaker 2: from a very young age. And he, I'm sure he
35:46
Speaker 2: thought he was a total weirdo because the producer of
35:48
Speaker 2: the show texted me and he goes, did you run
35:49
Speaker 2: into Brian Posehn in the lobby? I go, why, how
35:51
Speaker 2: do you know that? And he goes, he ran into
35:52
Speaker 2: some comedian in the lobby and told me about it.
35:54
Speaker 1: And I was like, Oh God, I was talking about
35:57
Speaker 1: pissing his pants.
35:58
Speaker 2: Yeah. He wanted me to piss on his pants. I'm like,
36:00
Speaker 2: that's not what I said. Yeah.
36:03
Speaker 1: I haven't met him. I heard he's a super nice guy.
36:06
Speaker 2: He is. That was very cool. Yeah.
36:09
Speaker 1: Oh, that's, that's amazing. Yeah. I got to find that.
36:13
Speaker 1: All those episodes.
36:15
Speaker 2: There's some comics that if I met him, I'd probably die.
36:18
Speaker 2: But like that list is like maybe two or three people,
36:22
Speaker 2: but like, frankly, like I got to see Amy Mann
36:25
Speaker 2: this week in new Orleans and like, she's one of
36:27
Speaker 2: my heroes. And I, I pulled some strings at the
36:30
Speaker 2: theater that I perform. It's like a big theater. And I,
36:32
Speaker 2: I don't have much pull. but I called in a
36:34
Speaker 2: favor and they were like, no one can meet her.
36:36
Speaker 2: She does not want to do a meet and greet,
36:38
Speaker 2: but she is doing a sound check that you can
36:40
Speaker 2: go to. And like, it was just me and nine
36:43
Speaker 2: other people at the sound check in a theater at
36:46
Speaker 2: 6 PM on Tuesday. And so she was just like,
36:49
Speaker 2: here are five songs. I'm not going to play at
36:51
Speaker 2: the concert tonight. Wow. It was amazing. But I get starstruck. I, my,
36:56
Speaker 2: my list of like heroes I need to meet and
36:58
Speaker 2: shit is like mostly musicians and actors, comedians. Well, I'm, I'm,
37:02
Speaker 2: I'm telling you that story to illustrate that. Like, very
37:04
Speaker 2: few comedians will have me probably knocked on my ass.
37:07
Speaker 2: And that includes like John Mulaney and Taylor Tomlinson and
37:09
Speaker 2: probably Kathy Griffin. And that's it.
37:11
Speaker 1: Yeah. Those are all superstars.
37:15
Speaker 2: I can't, I heard somewhere that Kathy Griffin doesn't have openers,
37:18
Speaker 2: but like, I have this vision of opening for her
37:20
Speaker 2: on the road and doing real life hacks with Kathy Griffin.
37:23
Speaker 2: I think it's, I think it's a genius.
37:26
Speaker 1: I would watch that show. You can inject it into
37:28
Speaker 1: my veins.
37:30
Speaker 2: I'm aware. And I'm not shy about this. It's a
37:32
Speaker 2: fucking genius idea. I have, I've like cold emailed her
37:37
Speaker 2: and her people about it where I'm like, let me
37:39
Speaker 2: open for you. Let me just do it once. I will,
37:42
Speaker 2: I will prove it in one show. I promise. I
37:45
Speaker 2: don't need more. I don't need more than that commitment.
37:46
Speaker 2: Just trust me to open for you. I will do
37:48
Speaker 2: 15 minutes and you will see. You have to believe me. I, wow.
37:52
Speaker 1: That would be incredible.
37:57
Speaker 2: It's incredible. I know. I've thought about this a lot.
37:59
Speaker 1: I would also, I would like to watch, I don't
38:02
Speaker 1: know how many seasons Hacks has now, three or four,
38:04
Speaker 1: but I would like to watch the Ryan Rogers reboot
38:08
Speaker 1: with you and Kathy Griffin. Maybe I could pitch myself
38:11
Speaker 1: as a writer if you're open to that.
38:13
Speaker 2: Yes, 100%. I think it works better as a docu-series.
38:16
Speaker 2: You're hired. I think it works better as a docu-series
38:19
Speaker 2: because that feels more Kathy Griffin to be like, it's
38:22
Speaker 2: me and her working, like modernizing her shit or whatever.
38:25
Speaker 2: I think it's really fun. Not that she needs my help.
38:28
Speaker 2: She's Kathy Griffin. but I think it works. It's like
38:30
Speaker 2: a bit, that's like a dynamic.
38:32
Speaker 1: Yeah. How do you feel? Maybe like a mockumentary.
38:34
Speaker 2: Style, even better girl. Okay. Now you're not even cash.
38:38
Speaker 2: You're a producer now.
38:40
Speaker 1: I feel like, um, maybe like miss piggy could make
38:43
Speaker 1: an appearance.
38:43
Speaker 2: I don't know. I feel like this is the, look,
38:45
Speaker 2: you already get the tone. This is what we're doing. Wait,
38:49
Speaker 2: do you pitch miss piggy for everything?
38:51
Speaker 1: No, I just would love to watch a comedy show
38:54
Speaker 1: with you and Miss Piggy.
38:56
Speaker 2: Me, Miss Piggy, and Kathy Griffin. And then the speakers
38:59
Speaker 2: blow out of the TV because it's too much screaming.
39:01
Speaker 1: Yeah, and Big Frida can do the music.
39:04
Speaker 2: Oh my God. This is so good. Hulu, where are you?
39:12
Speaker 1: We'll tag Hulu when we post this episode. And Kathy Griffin.
39:18
Speaker 2: And then we're like, We're going to get greenlit and
39:21
Speaker 2: then I get a cease and desist in the mail.
39:23
Speaker 1: Incredible. From Miss Piggy. She's like, get your fucking name
39:27
Speaker 1: out of here. of here. Oh my gosh. We're having
39:36
Speaker 1: too much fun. Question number seven. Mariah Carey's You'll Always
39:42
Speaker 1: Be My Baby is on what album?
39:46
Speaker 2: Okay. So. Here's me skirting. No, no, no. I'm not
39:54
Speaker 2: going to get it right, but here's what I'm going
39:55
Speaker 2: to do. I was going to give you multiple choice.
39:57
Speaker 2: Go for it. It's not Butterfly, and it's not Rainbow,
40:00
Speaker 2: and it's not The Emancipation of Mimi. It's much older
40:02
Speaker 2: than that. So what are my choices now?
40:06
Speaker 1: Ooh. Please hold.
40:10
Speaker 2: Is it... Fantasy?
40:13
Speaker 1: Fantasy, Daydream, or....
40:21
Speaker 2: Um, is it one of those two?
40:23
Speaker 1: It is. I was trying to come up with another
40:25
Speaker 1: one and I couldn't, I was like, or glitter. I
40:28
Speaker 1: don't know.
40:28
Speaker 2: It's not glitter. Is it fantasy?
40:32
Speaker 1: It's, it's not.
40:33
Speaker 2: It's daydream.
40:34
Speaker 1: It's daydream.
40:35
Speaker 2: I am flop Tina Aguilera on the pod.
40:38
Speaker 1: That's all right. Uh, I don't think Mariah Carey listens
40:42
Speaker 1: to this podcast. So I think.
40:44
Speaker 2: Why not? We're, we're new.
40:47
Speaker 1: That's the only reason why. Otherwise I'm sure she would
40:49
Speaker 1: listen to us.
40:50
Speaker 2: Mariah, we are developing a new show you'd be great for. Yeah.
40:56
Speaker 2: At Mariah Carey. And the podcast gets blocked and reported.
41:03
Speaker 1: Like immediately debuts and gets canceled.
41:07
Speaker 2: Incredible. Okay.
41:09
Speaker 1: Question number eight. What city was the first McDonald's located in?
41:20
Speaker 2: Where is Ray Kroc from?
41:22
Speaker 1: I don't even know who that is.
41:25
Speaker 2: He's the founder of McDonald's. Is it somewhere in like Missouri? No.
41:30
Speaker 2: What state was it in? I don't even know the state.
41:32
Speaker 1: California. I was going to say if you would name it. Yeah,
41:36
Speaker 1: I know.
41:37
Speaker 2: That doesn't seem very McDonald's-y to be from California.
41:44
Speaker 1: I mean, it doesn't list the state, but unless I
41:46
Speaker 1: have this city wrong.
41:51
Speaker 2: What is it?
41:52
Speaker 1: San Bernardino.
41:54
Speaker 2: Yikes. Yeah. Which also doesn't have a baseball team.
42:02
Speaker 1: And that's why you don't live there.
42:04
Speaker 2: Yeah. Cause I need to be in a city where
42:06
Speaker 2: they have a great baseball team that wins world series is.
42:09
Speaker 1: It's very important to you. Very, very important to you.
42:14
Speaker 2: Okay.
42:14
Speaker 1: This is, I think you can get this one. Number nine.
42:17
Speaker 1: How many U S presidents are there?
42:19
Speaker 2: 47. Well, there's one U.S. president, but there have been 47.
42:23
Speaker 2: Is that your question?
42:26
Speaker 1: This is 45, but I feel like I think 45
42:32
Speaker 1: is right, but I feel like your answer should also
42:35
Speaker 1: be awarded because we've had 47 residencies. Nick, what do
42:44
Speaker 1: you think? I think he deserves the point because both counts.
42:50
Speaker 1: yeah so i.
42:52
Speaker 2: Think so i concur great the jury has awarded.
42:56
Speaker 1: You yes okay final question what states do not participate
43:04
Speaker 1: in daylight savings.
43:07
Speaker 2: Arizona that's the only one that i'm aware of so
43:14
Speaker 2: maybe alaska is that the only one just that just
43:18
Speaker 2: arizona two There's two. Arizona, is it in the lower 48?
43:26
Speaker 1: I feel like you were close with your first guess.
43:32
Speaker 2: Alaska is what I thought. The lower. Hawaii.
43:38
Speaker 1: Nailed it. Is that a two point or one? I'm
43:46
Speaker 1: just going to give it two points. Hell yeah.
43:49
Speaker 2: We're real.
43:50
Speaker 1: We're real generous with the points. I'm like, name some
43:53
Speaker 1: drag queens, whatever.
43:54
Speaker 2: Yeah.
43:56
Speaker 1: Okay.
43:56
Speaker 2: I'll take that.
43:58
Speaker 1: It's fine.
44:00
Speaker 2: Just starting. I'm so much better at like pop culture-y stuff.
44:04
Speaker 2: I know. I love Jeopardy. I love Jeopardy and I
44:07
Speaker 2: love trivia, but I'm always like, give me anything like
44:11
Speaker 2: award season movies music like you i'm hard to beat
44:15
Speaker 2: for stuff like that i.
44:16
Speaker 1: Feel like some of the other guests have gotten like
44:18
Speaker 1: a lot of pop culture stuff and this one i
44:21
Speaker 1: was looking through it i was like this is a
44:22
Speaker 1: lot of sports.
44:23
Speaker 2: For him the funny thing is you could have changed
44:27
Speaker 2: any of that and you chose not to this is
44:28
Speaker 2: on you.
44:29
Speaker 1: It's not we can blame carlos for it i because
44:36
Speaker 1: i think the idea is that we everybody who is
44:39
Speaker 1: coming to Mic Drop the same week as you for
44:42
Speaker 1: your show in Chandler on March 5th, they're all going
44:45
Speaker 1: to get the same questions. So when the podcast comes out,
44:50
Speaker 1: we'll be like, who is the fairest of them all?
44:53
Speaker 1: Who's the smartest?
44:56
Speaker 2: I can't.
44:56
Speaker 1: You're getting the same questions as the other comics who
44:59
Speaker 1: are visiting us.
45:02
Speaker 2: I found this batch of questions to be extremely straight-coated.
45:07
Speaker 1: They are.
45:08
Speaker 2: That's fair.
45:08
Speaker 1: I think they're homophobic. Minus the Mariah Carey question.
45:12
Speaker 2: You said it.
45:13
Speaker 1: I did. And I feel comfortable saying it.
45:16
Speaker 2: If a straight guy gets that question, you can go
45:18
Speaker 2: ahead and just delete my episode entirely.
45:21
Speaker 1: I'll just be like, the file was too big. Just
45:24
Speaker 1: delete the whole thing.
45:25
Speaker 2: It was too funny.
45:27
Speaker 1: Well, you survived it, though. You got through it.
45:31
Speaker 2: Thank you.
45:31
Speaker 1: What a blast. How many drag queens can you name in, like,
45:35
Speaker 1: 30 seconds? Go.
45:37
Speaker 2: Probably, probably right now. Okay. Alaska, Katya, Trixie, Detox, Alyssa Edwards,
45:44
Speaker 2: Lala Ri, um, Megami, Eureka, O'Hara, Bob the Drag Queen,
45:50
Speaker 2: Monet Exchange, um, let's, Bianca Del Rio, Laganja, Estranja, uh, Georges,
46:00
Speaker 2: let's do, um, Tina Burner, uh, Jada Essence Hall, Evie Audley, Raja,
46:10
Speaker 2: Jinx Monsoon, Vendula Krem.
46:12
Speaker 1: That's 30 seconds. She even put a 30 second timer
46:16
Speaker 1: on the board. I think I counted 23, but you
46:20
Speaker 1: honestly could be making them up. You could be just
46:22
Speaker 1: naming like parts of the body or something.
46:24
Speaker 2: Oh, that's so funny.
46:28
Speaker 1: I knew some of them.
46:30
Speaker 2: I have gone back. What'd you say?
46:33
Speaker 1: Nick, did you keep count? I think I got like
46:35
Speaker 1: 23 or 24. I did not do any of that.
46:41
Speaker 1: I was too busy trying to figure out how to
46:42
Speaker 1: get a score countdown on there.
46:44
Speaker 2: You did it.
46:44
Speaker 1: You crushed it. I love it. I wanted Ryan to
46:48
Speaker 1: finish strong.
46:49
Speaker 2: That was fun.
46:51
Speaker 1: Ryan, I feel like we could just be here chatting
46:54
Speaker 1: all day, all day long. And I know we have
46:56
Speaker 1: to go. So now we're in our gotta go section.
46:59
Speaker 1: Is there anything else you would like to mention before
47:03
Speaker 1: people come and visit you for your show on Thursday,
47:06
Speaker 1: March 5th?
47:08
Speaker 2: I would love if people came to my show at
47:11
Speaker 2: Mic Drop Chandler on Thursday, March 5th. That would mean
47:15
Speaker 2: a lot to me. And we need to move these
47:17
Speaker 2: tickets because it's a 50 cap room. And I don't
47:21
Speaker 2: think that's hard to fill, but I would love it
47:24
Speaker 2: if anyone could. in the Chandler surrounding area, including Phoenix.
47:28
Speaker 2: And I'll just go ahead and say Colorado. California's out there.
47:35
Speaker 2: Nevada's out there. New Mexico's out there. I wish all
47:38
Speaker 2: of them would come because they have to. I've got
47:42
Speaker 2: a really fun year ahead, including I just licensed my
47:46
Speaker 2: latest special girl by to out TV. Really?
47:51
Speaker 1: I didn't know that. Congratulations.
47:53
Speaker 2: It's new. I haven't really talked about it at all,
47:55
Speaker 2: but we had a couple calls this week about launch
47:59
Speaker 2: date and everything. I signed it in October, but I
48:03
Speaker 2: have to keep my mouth shut. But we're going to
48:05
Speaker 2: have to start rolling out promo because it's going to
48:07
Speaker 2: launch the first or second week of May. So it's
48:10
Speaker 2: going to be on OutTV for international distribution and syndication
48:14
Speaker 2: in Canada, the UK.
48:16
Speaker 1: That is so cool.
48:18
Speaker 2: It's really cool.

Speaker 1: I know.
48:20
Speaker 2: I love you. Very, very proud.

49:51
Speaker 2: it was narrated by this British woman with a soothing voice.
49:53
Speaker 2: And then at the end, after listening to her for
49:55
Speaker 2: hours and hours, I realized it was Carey Mulligan the
