- 0:26Well, tonight, Chicago Cubs in town to open up a three-day series here with the Dodgers.
- 0:31Tomorrow night's game will be at Roosevelt Stadium, and on Thursday they'll come back here to wind up the set.
- 0:36We'll begin on Friday, Saturday, and for a doubleheader Sunday, the Cincinnati Redlegs.
- 0:41the Dodgers have a 3-0 record against the Cubs this year with two victories at Ebbets Field and one at Wrigley Field.
- 0:47Two of the ball games in the Western city, of course, were postponed because of bad weather.
- 0:52the Brooklyn record, by the way, against the Western clubs this year is 10-6, 5-4 at home, and 5-2 away.
- 1:00That victory in Chicago was posted by young Sandy Koufax, who blazed by a 13 strikeout from that ball game to get a 3-2 win.
- 1:07the two runs against Sandy by the Cubs were unearned in that one.
- 1:10Koufax will go to the firing line tonight, and opposing will be a young right-hander named Richard Fred Drott,
- 1:17known by his teammates as Dick Drott, purchased by the Cubs from Los Angeles on March the 5th this year.
- 1:24He's a big right-hander who is from Cincinnati.
- 1:27Last year with Los Angeles on the coast, he won 13, lost 10, and had an earned run average of 4.39.
- 1:34So it'll be Drott going against Koufax, Sandy Koufax the left-hander, and Dick Drott with the right-hander.
- 1:40Let's give you a rundown now on the batting orders for the two ball clubs.
- 1:45Leading off for Chicago, at second base will be Bobby Morgan.
- 1:51Left field, Spieth, at third base will be Banks.
- 1:54In center field will be Walls.
- 1:56Ernega, the right fielder, E-R-N-A-G-A, a newcomer who has made quite an impressive start with Chicago.
- 2:03Day along at first base, Neiman the catcher, Latrell at shortstop, and Dick Drott to do the pitching.
- 2:11For the Dodgers, Amarose in left field, Gilliam at second base, Duke Snyder in center,
- 2:19Gino Simoli in right field, Hodges at first, Campanella catching, Charlie Neal at third,
- 2:27Don Zimmer at short, and Sandy Koufax to do the pitching.
- 2:33the umpires for tonight's game will be Gorman at the plate, Dixon, Burkhart, and Duffy Boggess on the bases.
- 2:40Well, it's a fine night for a ball game.
- 2:42Still plenty of seats available here at Ebbets Field for this series opener,
- 2:45which welcomes the Dodgers back home after a long road trip.
- 2:49They went to the west and had the trip broken by a three-day stand here against the Giants,
- 2:53and went back into Pennsylvania for a nine-game series.
- 2:57So it'll be the Dodgers and the Cubs as the Western Invasion begins for the second time this year.
- 3:02Still plenty of seats here at Ebbets Field, a fine night for a ball game,
- 3:05so if you're in the neighborhood, make your plans and come on over and see one.
- 3:09Koufax has stopped his warm-ups now, and he's about ready to go,
- 3:13but the big Chicago right-hander, Dick Drop, is still firing away off to our left.
- 3:20Brooklyn on this home stand plays 15 games against the West, including two games at Jersey City,
- 3:26tomorrow night against Chicago, and June 10th against Milwaukee.
- 3:30There'll be two Sunday double-headers in the set, June 9th against Cincinnati.
- 3:34That'll be this coming Sunday, and then a week from Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals
- 3:38on Father's Day.
- 3:40the Dodgers take the field now, and we'll remind you to be sure
- 3:43and pick up your tickets for those two big double-headers coming up.
- 3:46Sunday, June 9th, the Dodgers and the Cincinnati Redlegs, and Sunday, June 16th, with St. Louis.
- 3:54So the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Braves, Cincinnati Redlegs, and St. Louis Cardinals
- 3:59come to Ebbets Field, while the Dodgers here hope to make hay
- 4:02and gain a little ground in the National League standing.
- 4:05Going out to play now, third base Charlie Neal at shortstop, Don Zimmer.
- 4:09Second is Junior Gilliam with his first, Gil Hodges.
- 4:12Andy Amoros goes to left field, Duke Snyder to center, Dino Samoila to right.
- 4:17Campanella catching, Kofax pitching, and now our national anthem.
- 4:21the Dodgers and the Cincinnati Redlegs, and Sunday, June 16th, with St. Louis.
- 4:35the Dodgers and the Cincinnati Redlegs, and Sunday, June 16th, with St. Louis.
- 4:52the Dodgers and the Cincinnati Redlegs, and Sunday, June 16th, with St. Louis.
- 5:06the Dodgers and the Cincinnati Redlegs, and Sunday, June 16th, with St. Louis.
- 5:19the Dodgers and the Cincinnati Redlegs, and Sunday, June 16th, with St. Louis.
- 5:44And so it's about time to play ball.
- 5:46the Dodgers are on the field defensively, and the Chicago Cubs will start off with Morgan speaking banks to face left-hander Sandy Kofax.
- 5:53And I imagine the Cubs remember that last outing against Kofax when 13 panned the breeze.
- 5:59Kofax firing down a few to Roy Campanella, and we'll have this one underway in just a moment.
- 6:04the Dodgers currently in third place in a tie with Milwaukee in the National League standings.
- 6:08Three games off the top and a game, a half a game behind the Philadelphia Philz, who are in second.
- 6:14the Dodgers on this long home stand coming up against the Western Clubs hope to pick up some ground.
- 6:22Kofax about ready now, still pumping them into Roy Campanella.
- 6:28Fine evening for a ball game, and again we ask you in the neighborhood, come on out to Ebbets Field and take this one in.
- 6:33That ought to be a good game between two fine young pitchers, Dick Grott for the Cubs and Sandy Kofax for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 6:40the both-man crew going down right field for the Dodgers, stepping into the batter's box, the Chicago leadoff man Bobby Morgan,
- 6:47and stepping into the microphone for the F&M Schaeffer Brewing Company, and for the play-by-play, here's Vince Scully.
- 6:52Thank you, Jerry, and good evening everybody.
- 6:55And despite the fact that I have just knocked a cup of coffee in my lap in a suit that's just out of the cleaners, it's great to be home.
- 7:04Bobby Morgan, Bob Speak, and Ernie Banks in the first inning.
- 7:08So Sandy Kofax, a belated starter with Magley the announced pitcher out, and Kofax gets over the strike on one.
- 7:16Morgan batting 281, he has a run batted in.
- 7:22the lights have not yet taken complete effect.
- 7:25Kofax, trying to use that to his advantage now, comes back with a fastball that's cut on a miss, 0-2.
- 7:33You see that happen a lot in ball games, especially night games, or out at Chicago at the tail end of a game.
- 7:40the pitcher will rely more on his fastball.
- 7:450-2, the count to Bobby Morgan.
- 7:47Kofax ready, curveball is cut on and fouled away, 0-2.
- 7:53the F&M Schaeffer Brewing Company of Brooklyn, delighted to be sending it to you.
- 7:57Hope things are going just right for you, wherever you may be.
- 8:05They have a pretty good breeze blowing from the right field corner, slanting over to the left field corner.
- 8:10Strike two-fifths, slow curve got him swinging.
- 8:17Sandy Kofax, the last time he faced the Chicago Cubs out at Wrigley Field, you no doubt remember, he struck out 13.
- 8:25Going into tonight's ball game, he had 47 strikeouts, he's second man in the league, one back of Luis Arroyo of the Pirates.
- 8:33And now by striking out Bobby Morgan, Kofax now ties Arroyo.
- 8:41Bob Speak batting 2-43 with three home runs and 11 runs batted in.
- 8:47One out in the first inning, no score.
- 8:49Kofax ready and comes to the plate, fastball inside, ball one.
- 8:55Tommy Gorman calling the balls and strikes, Hal Dixon at first, Kenny Burkhart at second, and Dusty Boggess at third.
- 9:06Kofax staring in to get his sign, Cabinella wigwags it out to him, now kneeling on the grass at third.
- 9:121-0 pitch, too high, ball two, 2-0.
- 9:22Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs opening up a big stand here at Ebbets Field tonight and over at Jersey City tomorrow night.
- 9:29Don Drysdale will do the pitching for Brooklyn tomorrow evening.
- 9:34Two balls, no strikes to Bob Speak, one out on the first inning, no score.
- 9:38Kofax right back and the fastball is inside, ball three, 3-0.
- 9:44Kofax at this moment, and of course it's only the second batter, is not nearly as fast as he was in Chicago.
- 9:51However, he's trying to loosen up and right now he's bent over and tried to touch his toes.
- 9:563-0 the count, Sandy ready and delivers, fastball low, ball four.
- 10:01So Bob Speak goes a walk with one out on the first inning.
- 10:07Ray Banks batting 2-31, he has five home runs, 15 runs batted in, out on Declay Walls.
- 10:23Sandy Kofax and Roy Cabinella, the Dodger battery.
- 10:26Kofax takes a peek at first, checks again and goes over there and Speak, just off the bag, steps back.
- 10:33Dodgers, Gilliam, Zimmer and Neal, the outfield of Amoros, Snyder and Simoli.
- 10:42Kofax said, another look at first, now the fastball is bonded up along the third baseline and goes foul.
- 10:49On one to Ernie Banks.
- 10:54Well, what have you been doing while we were away on the road through the state of Pennsylvania?
- 10:58Did you have a nice Memorial Day weekend and a big holiday? Hope you did.
- 11:02And I certainly hope you'll be making plans to pay us a visit. Come on out to the ballpark.
- 11:08Be home for a while now, the entire west will come storming in.
- 11:12And the highlight invasions, of course, by Cincinnati and Milwaukee.
- 11:16So we'll be looking forward to seeing you out here at the ballpark.
- 11:20Banks waiting on one to count, Kofax bends a curve and it's cut on and missed like two.
- 11:25Sandy took a little off that and Banks out in front.
- 11:31We have confirmation of the Chicago Cubs pitcher for tomorrow night, Don Kaiser.
- 11:36So it'll be Don Kaiser and Don Drysdale tomorrow night at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City.
- 11:44Banks waiting on one to the count.
- 11:47Kofax goes to a stretch and pulls it down. Now the strike two fits fastball high, ball one.
- 11:52One and two.
- 11:59the Dodgers for many, many reasons are happy to be home.
- 12:03Not the least of which, extra time for batting practice.
- 12:06They've been out here quite a while today trying to get their eye back.
- 12:09Foto first, Bob speak back.
- 12:11You know when you're the visiting ball club and you get into a hitting slump, it's pretty tough to correct it.
- 12:16For you only have a half hour of batting practice as a visitor.
- 12:20Home club can bat all day if they want.
- 12:23One and two pitch fastball got him swinging and that thing was moving.
- 12:26So maybe Kofax is starting to loosen up a little bit.
- 12:29It wasn't very fast to Morgan or speak with that last strike to Ernie Banks had something on it.
- 12:35Oh, he now has two strikeouts in the first inning.
- 12:39He is now one ahead of Louis Arroyo.
- 12:42Kofax now with 49 strikeouts.
- 12:48Lee Walls batting 226.
- 12:50Ten runs batted in.
- 12:54Two out in the first inning, no score.
- 12:56Bob speak at first base.
- 12:58Sandy Kofax and Dick Grott in this one.
- 13:02Kofax takes the peak at first.
- 13:04Now left hand's a fastball in there that's cut on and fouled to the right of the plate and close to the dugout.
- 13:08Campanella comes over to the lip of the dugout and he has no play.
- 13:12Finally winds up about four rows back of the dugout.
- 13:25Oh, on one account, young GI with his gal got that foul ball and proudly presented it to her.
- 13:31I'd like to see that in the ballpark.
- 13:33Another thing you'd like to see is a father catch a foul ball and hand it to his little son.
- 13:38That's my pop.
- 13:46Walls waiting, on one account.
- 13:48Kofax now ready and decides to go to first again and speak right back to the bag.
- 13:53Just the start of things.
- 13:55Oh, pull up a comfortable chair.
- 13:57If you want to take your shoes off, go ahead.
- 13:58Wiggle your toes and we hope you'll have a cold shave for the two throughout the evening.
- 14:03Dodgers and Cubs opening up the home stand.
- 14:08Kofax set. Now the strike one fits.
- 14:10Slow curve, a little high, just off the target where Tom Gorman started to bring his right hand up
- 14:16and then quickly snapped it back to his side.
- 14:19One ball, one strike.
- 14:31Kofax set, another look at first.
- 14:33Again he goes over there and Bob Speak, who has not been having much of a lead,
- 14:37driven back to the bag again.
- 14:44Lee Walls waiting, Kofax ready.
- 14:46Now the one-one pitch.
- 14:47Fast ball, cut on and missed and that was moving.
- 14:50One and two.
- 14:53Well, one thing I'm pretty sure about this stage of the game now, Kofax has loosened up.
- 14:57He appeared to be a little stiff pitching to Morgan even though he struck him out.
- 15:01Pinwheeled his arms around, did a couple of knee bends.
- 15:05Now he's starting to pitch with a loose motion.
- 15:08One and two, the count to Lee Walls.
- 15:11Two out in the first inning, no score.
- 15:15Kofax set, takes a peek at Speak, comes to the plate with a curve and misses high.
- 15:19Two and two.
- 15:30Freddie Fitzsimmons coaching at first for Chicago.
- 15:34Round at third, George Myatt.
- 15:39Two balls, two strikes.
- 15:41Kofax set and delivers.
- 15:42Fast ball, cut on, is a high pop fly and a very shallow right center.
- 15:46It looks like Gilliam's going out and calling, Simoli trotting in behind him and Gilliam takes it for the out.
- 15:53So in the first inning, no runs, no hits.
- 15:55It was one more.
- 15:56One man left on.
- 15:57Kofax strikes out two.
- 15:59At the end of half an inning, Chicago nothing and the Dodgers coming up.
- 16:02Coming up right now with the shape of scoreboard, Jerry Doggett.
- 16:06Well, then there's a lot of activity going on tonight in the major leagues.
- 16:09Milwaukee playing the Giants at the Polo grounds.
- 16:12Crone going against Miller.
- 16:13Cincinnati at Philadelphia, Lawrence against Attucks.
- 16:16St. Louis at Pittsburgh.
- 16:17It'll be Schmitz against Smith.
- 16:19And those St. Louis Smiths are still getting together.
- 16:22Bob Smith, who formerly was in the Cardinals, pitching tonight for Pittsburgh.
- 16:25And Willard Schmitz going for St. Louis.
- 16:28In the American League, the Yankees play at Cleveland.
- 16:30Sturtevant going against Daly.
- 16:32Boston and Chicago out of Chicago.
- 16:34Sullivan or Schiffler against Pierce.
- 16:37Washington at Detroit.
- 16:39It'll be Clevernture against Maas.
- 16:41And Baltimore and Kansas City, Lowe's against Morgan.
- 16:44the games of course, Chicago, Detroit and Kansas City will be somewhat behind us.
- 16:49Chicago-Detroit game will start at 9 o'clock New York time.
- 16:52And the Kansas City game will be at 10 o'clock.
- 16:55the Yankee-Cleveland game is about to get underway.
- 16:58Our score at the end of the half inning of play, nothing nothing.
- 17:01the Dodgers coming on, so let's get back to play.
- 17:03And here's Vinn.
- 17:04Sandy Amoros, who is doing a fine job spelling Carl Perillo.
- 17:08Although Amoros is playing in left field.
- 17:10He got into the lineup because of Perillo's stiff neck.
- 17:13Amoros batting 320.
- 17:15He has three home runs, nine runs batted in.
- 17:18Amoros followed by Jim Gilliam and then Duke Snyder.
- 17:25Dick Drott, D-R-O-T-T, loosening up right now.
- 17:28Richard Frederick Drott, to be exact.
- 17:31He throws hard. He has 46 strikeouts.
- 17:34So if you're keeping score, we'll probably be putting a few K's in the book tonight.
- 17:38Kofax recorded two in the first inning.
- 17:40Now we'll find out about Dick Drott.
- 17:42Amoros wiggling that bat back of his left ear, settles in the hitters box.
- 17:46And here we go to the last of the first.
- 17:48Drott delivers fastball outside, ball one.
- 17:52In fact, any time you go into Chicago, come to think of it,
- 17:55especially in the spring or in the fall when you don't get that bright sunshine for too long,
- 18:01you run into Drott, Drabowski, or Kaiser.
- 18:04You could be in for quite a sad afternoon.
- 18:07the 1-0 pitch to Amoros. He runs up as if to bond and takes it inside.
- 18:11Ball through, 2-0.
- 18:16Some fine young ballplayers coming into their own this year.
- 18:19It's always a good sign for the league and for baseball.
- 18:25Drott ready. Now the 2-0 pitch to Amoros.
- 18:28In there, looks like he changed up on it, 2-1.
- 18:32Dodgers, of course, proud of their three youngsters.
- 18:35John Padres, Andy Koufax, Don Drysdale.
- 18:39For that matter, Gino Simoli, too.
- 18:46Drott gets his sign now. Dick ready.
- 18:48And the 2-1 pitch to Amoros. Fastball uppercut it.
- 18:51And a high pop fly. Ernie Banks calling, waiting.
- 18:55He's got it. One out.
- 19:03Jim Gilliam, who must be very happy to be back here in Brooklyn.
- 19:07He's had trouble, needs extra batting practice.
- 19:11He's hitting 2-51. Ten runs batted in.
- 19:15On deck, Duke Snyder.
- 19:18Ernie Banks, wide of the bag at third, but on the edge of the infield grass.
- 19:22Dick Drott goes to work now. the right-hander comes with a fastball
- 19:25and gets it over for the strike, going one.
- 19:28Jake Butler coaching at first, around a third. Billy Herman.
- 19:41Drott right back again. A strike one pitch, a breaking ball, it's down low, one and one.
- 19:59One ball, one strike.
- 20:01Drott delivers one-one. the curveball breaks low and inside, ball two, two and one.
- 20:06It might be a slider. It's not that sharp curveball.
- 20:09Just seems to break in a little bit and drop.
- 20:14Two balls, one strike to Jim Gilliam. One out, bottom of the first inning, no score.
- 20:19Drott ready and the 2-1 pitch. Fastball just outside, ball three, three and one.
- 20:32Snyder waiting on deck.
- 20:37Drott ready and the 3-1 pitch to Gilliam. Fastball high and juniors on.
- 20:41So with one out, Gilliam draws the walk and it brings up the Duke.
- 20:45And a troubled Duke he is, with a 2-45 batting average.
- 20:50He's still hitting the long ball. He has nine home runs to lead the club.
- 20:54And 20 runs batted in.
- 20:59Out on deck, Geno Somoli. One out, bottom of the first inning, no score.
- 21:03Gilliam at first base.
- 21:07Snyder waiting at the plate now. Drott for the first time having to work from a stretch position.
- 21:13Dick comes out, a peek at first, and now he works the plate.
- 21:16Sharp curve outside, ball one, one and oh.
- 21:27One ball, no strikes.
- 21:35Drott ready. Now the 1-0 pitch. Snyder looks at a fastball, it's down low ball too.
- 21:40Two and oh.
- 21:43Dick Drott, as we said, a strikeout man. He has struck out 46 thus far this year.
- 21:48And the high for him, which is also a league high.
- 21:51Dick Drott struck out 15 in one ball game.
- 21:56And two, close to that, Koufax and Roberts have each struck out 13.
- 22:03Drott delivers two and oh to Snyder, and the fastball is high. Ball three, three and oh.
- 22:08That 15 strikeout performance by Dick Drott is also now a Chicago club record.
- 22:15No pitcher in the history of the Cubs ever struck out that many men in one game.
- 22:20And he's 20 years old. He should be around Chicago for quite a while.
- 22:27Three balls and no strikes to Snyder. Drott ready and delivers.
- 22:30Fastball outside, ball four.
- 22:33And so the fellow who can fire that baseball apparently has trouble with control too.
- 22:37And he has walked two men with one out in the first inning.
- 22:40And here's Geno Somoli who's certainly been carrying the banner for Brooklyn throughout the West.
- 22:46And then of course in Pennsylvania, he was hurt on the Western trip, but he still had that red out batting average.
- 22:52And he brings up a 346 average to the plate.
- 22:56In his last 11 ball game, Somoli has batted 432.
- 23:00Will you spell his name in capital letters? Geno Somoli.
- 23:11Gilliam coming away from second, Snyder from first.
- 23:14One out, bottom of the first inning, no score.
- 23:16From Ebbett Field in Brooklyn.
- 23:19Dick Drott ready, checks his runners and delivers.
- 23:22Fastball inside, ball one.
- 23:25Somoli continues to look around at Billy Herman in case there might be something up in the air.
- 23:30Good batter will always check with his third base coach, not just on a two and oh and three and oh count.
- 23:38One ball, no strikes.
- 23:41Dick Drott ready, another look to his base runners and comes to the plate and misses again.
- 23:45Down low, ball two, two and oh.
- 23:50Now Dale Long comes over from first to have a few words.
- 23:53And Bob Sheffing going out to the mound to see just what's wrong with Dick Drott.
- 24:04Long leaves the mound and Sheffing, an ex-catcher going out to try and settle his young pitcher.
- 24:11Dick Drott and Cal Neiman, the batter, Dale Long, Bobby Morgan, Jack Littrell, Ernie Banks in the infield.
- 24:19the outfield, Bob Speak, Lee Walls and the right fielder, Frank Renega.
- 24:33Somoli waiting, two balls, no strikes.
- 24:38Dick Drott comes set now, checks his runners and the two nothing pitch to Somoli.
- 24:43Down low, ball three.
- 24:46Drott, as far as his record is concerned, with 46 strikeouts, he had walked 28 men.
- 24:53Profeller throws that hard, it's very good.
- 24:56But he's having his problems here.
- 24:58One pitch away from loading up the bases.
- 25:01A free all pitch to Somoli, barreled in there for a strike, three and one.
- 25:13Gilliam hands on his hips, a short lead off second.
- 25:16Snyder inching away off first.
- 25:18One out on the first inning in case he might have just dropped by, no score.
- 25:23Drott set, checks his man.
- 25:25Now the three one pitch, fastball is in there again, strike two.
- 25:30Dick Drott has gone to a full count and now with one out, Somoli and Messers,
- 25:34Gilliam and Snyder on the base paths take a look over at third base coach Billy Herman.
- 25:38See if they play a little run and hit or not.
- 25:45Drott looks down the barrel to get his sign, Nieman wigwags it out to him.
- 25:49the runners go, the three two is cut on and fouled away.
- 25:53Down the right fielder line on top of the roof and out of the ballpark.
- 25:57the kids are listening to the ball game on the soda pop stands outside.
- 26:01You run that one down almost to Bedford Avenue.
- 26:08Full count to Somoli, the runners were going on the pitch.
- 26:11We'll see what they do this time.
- 26:21Dick Drott shaking no, now he's ready.
- 26:24Check the runners, they go, the three two are cut on foul-tip and held by Nieman
- 26:28and his ball goes into left field.
- 26:31Gilliam is up, comes to the plate and Snyder goes to third.
- 26:38So Somoli strikes out.
- 26:39What happened was he foul-tipped the ball right into the webbing of Nieman's glove
- 26:44and the young catcher in such a hurry to get his man at third, threw the ball into left field.
- 26:49So Somoli strikes out.
- 26:53the runners advance to second and third and Gilliam comes on in on the throwing error
- 26:57and I imagine that they'll give them stolen bases on it.
- 27:01However, we will wait for the verdict of the official score.
- 27:07Both Snyder and Gilliam giving credit for stolen bases and then Gilliam comes in to score
- 27:12on the catcher's overthrow, Snyder advancing to third.
- 27:15Dodgers lead one to nothing here in the first inning, two out and Gill Hodges steps in.
- 27:21Sharp curve in and over for a strike on one.
- 27:30Brooklyn one, Cubs nothing, bottom of the first inning, Duke Snyder coming down off third with two out.
- 27:35Hodges batting 3.44.
- 27:40Drop ready and the strike one fits, fastball a little low.
- 27:43Hodges dropped his back foot back and slid that bat between his hands as if he was going to bunt.
- 27:49Snyder started to come down the line and then recreated.
- 27:51One ball, one strike.
- 27:55Gill's been red hot in his last 16 ball games.
- 27:57He's hit at a 4-0-3 clip.
- 28:03Drop to his windup now.
- 28:05the 1-1 pitch to Gill, fastball low, ball two, two and one.
- 28:17So two walks, a double steal and a throwing error by catcher Cal Nieman and Brooklyn leads one to nothing.
- 28:24Two and one to count to Gill Hodges.
- 28:29Drop ready, the 2-1 pitch, fastball low and outside, ball three.
- 28:40On deck, Roy Campanella.
- 28:44Still no action in the Chicago bullfin.
- 28:47Early in the ball game and the goal of the fellow can throw as well as Drott.
- 28:513-1 pitch to Hodges, slow curve, missed inside, ball four.
- 28:56So Hodges walks, the third walk given up by Dick Drott.
- 29:00Runs at first and third with two out and it brings up Roy Campanella.
- 29:06Campanella batting 2-39, has seven home runs, 22 runs batted in.
- 29:19Camp settling in the hitters box now, Drott having a rough first inning.
- 29:24Least control wise, he has been charged with only one run.
- 29:28Checks his runners and delivers to Campi and the fastball is at his knees for a strike on one.
- 29:34Bottom of the first inning, runners at first and third, Brooklyn leads one to nothing.
- 29:52Campi just waiting, Drott staring in.
- 29:55Now the right end are ready and the strike one pitch, curve ball, it backs Campanella out of there.
- 30:00One ball, one strike.
- 30:03We're happy to salute our Schaeffer Award winners for the week, Johnny Padres and Gino Simoli.
- 30:09Simoli's been a big winner.
- 30:12He'll probably end up with half the brewery at the rate he's going.
- 30:21Drott set and the 1-1 pitch to Campi, curve outside, ball two, 2-1.
- 30:28Have some wonderful gifts, you know, Schaeffer Award.
- 30:33All kinds of home appliances and radios, wearing blenders and mixers and things like that.
- 30:43Luggage.
- 30:49Campanella waiting, two balls, one strike.
- 30:52Drott delivers two and one to Roy, fastball and that's low, ball three.
- 30:57Oh, Dick Drott having trouble with his control now.
- 31:01He'd want three men here in the first inning, one run is over.
- 31:05He might have been out of it, had the ball not stuck in Nieman's web.
- 31:09However, once he did that and the young catcher made a hurried throw, went into left field.
- 31:163-1 pitch to Campanella, fastball cut on a high drive to deep right field.
- 31:20Back goes Inega, this one's going to be off the side of the scoreboard and bounding away.
- 31:25In comes Snyder, right back of him is Hodges on a stand-up double by Campanella.
- 31:38Frank Ornaga, E-R-N-A-G-A, 26-year-old right fielder.
- 31:44This was the first time he has ever played at Ebbets Field.
- 31:47And many a right fielder has spent a sleepless night thinking about that concave wall
- 31:52and the many-sided scoreboard and that thing took the wrong carom as far as Inega was concerned.
- 31:57Bounced all the way over near the foul line.
- 32:00So Campanella doubles high off the Schaeffer scoreboard.
- 32:02the right drives in two more and the Dodgers now lead 3-0 in the first inning.
- 32:12Campanella now has 24 runs batted in.
- 32:15Roy at second, Charlie Neal to batter with two out and the fastball comes low, ball one.
- 32:21Bob Sheffing going along with his young pitcher finally stands up in front of his dugout
- 32:26and motions with his right hand to get somebody loose down there in the bullpen.
- 32:31They didn't see him and he now finds out about the telephone so he'll ring.
- 32:35Curved to Charlie Neal in for the strike, one and one.
- 32:39So they are moving around now on the Chicago bullpen.
- 32:43Brooklyn three runs on one hit.
- 32:47Throwing error by Katja Nieman got one run over and Campanella has just doubled in two.
- 32:56the one-one pitch now to Neal, cut on and missed, one and two.
- 33:10Neal waiting, one ball, two strikes.
- 33:12Two out on the first inning, 3-0 Brooklyn.
- 33:17Campanella coming away off second base.
- 33:25Now the one and two pitch to Neal is cut on and missed, strike three.
- 33:28So Charlie goes down and that closes out the first inning.
- 33:32So both starting pitchers with reputations of being strikeout men
- 33:36and each starter has struck out two men in the first inning.
- 33:39Over Kofax walked just one man and got out of the first inning.
- 33:43Dick Grott is charged with three runs on one hit.
- 33:46A double steal, a costly throwing error and one man left on.
- 33:50At the end of one inning, Brooklyn three, Chicago nothing.
- 33:54Now let's hear from Jerry.
- 33:56Well now while the field changes hands, let's have a couple of young friends take the spotlight.
- 34:00How about it?
- 34:04A real, real enjoyment get Shaffer, Shaffer beer.
- 34:09A real, real enjoyment ask for Shaffer.
- 34:13It's real beer.
- 34:15A real, real refreshment get Shaffer, Shaffer beer.
- 34:19A real, real refreshment ask for Shaffer.
- 34:24It's real beer.
- 34:29That's a real trumpet.
- 34:31That's real beer!
- 34:36For real, real enjoyment, get Shaffer Shaffer beer.
- 34:41For real, real enjoyment, ask for Shaffer, it's real beer.
- 34:47Alright, it's about to play ball in the second inning.
- 34:53Let's go right back to the action and hear it again from Vince Scully.
- 34:56Frank Ernauga, E-R-N-A-G-A. He's come up from Portland and has certainly given the Cubs some power.
- 35:04He's batting.353, he's only.17 at bats.
- 35:10Frank Ernauga, first pitch to him, down low, ball one.
- 35:14Frank with six hits, has two home runs, two triples and a double.
- 35:22Extra base hits, right hand batter, E-R-N-A-G-A.
- 35:29Colfax ready and the 1-0 pitch, fastball in for the strike, one and one.
- 35:34It's a good thing Ernauga was not, it was a good thing he wasn't a girl
- 35:40because he would have been upset about the age that they first announced about him.
- 35:44They said he was.37, he's.26.
- 35:48the 1-1 pitch, fastball just low, ball two, two and one.
- 35:53Be followed by Dale Long and then catcher Cal Nieman.
- 35:59Giants and Milwaukee, a 1-1 tie at the end of an inning and a half.
- 36:06Colfax ready, now the 2-1 pitch, fastball in there, strike two.
- 36:12In that ball game, Ray Cone and Stu Miller for the Giants, a 1-1 tie at the end of an inning and a half.
- 36:18Frank Torrey had a home run for the Braves, Willie Mays had a home run for the Giants.
- 36:27Ernauga waiting now, the 2-2 pitch, fastball got him swinging.
- 36:35That is the third strikeout for Sandy Colfax and brings up Dale Long.
- 36:44Long batting 2-43, has five home runs, 16 runs batted in.
- 36:56Long, powerful left hand batter, formerly with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 37:03Out on deck, Cal Nieman, first pitch to Long, in and over for a strike on one.
- 37:07Soon as Dale has had his ad batch, we'll duck in a station break.
- 37:18Colfax right back again and the slow curve is just outside, one ball, one strike.
- 37:24We're in the second inning, one out, bases empty, Brooklyn three and Chicago nothing.
- 37:37Colfax winds a 1-1 pitch, fastball cut on 1-2.
- 37:55Colfax bends at the waist to get his sign from Cabanela, now he's ready.
- 37:591-2 pitch, slow curve, down low, 2-2.
- 38:06the Philadelphia Phillies leading Cincinnati 1-0 at the end of an inning and a half.
- 38:10That means those fills are rough.
- 38:17Long waiting, two balls, two strikes.
- 38:20Colfax delivers, fastball inside, right at the knuckles, ball free.
- 38:35Colfax nods in agreement with Cabanela, now he's ready.
- 38:413-2 pitch, fastball fouled away.
- 38:46the lights are beginning to take effect now here at the ballpark.
- 38:50Funny when the lights go on, the gray sky up ahead now appears to be nice and blue.
- 38:59Much nicer looking evening.
- 39:04Full count to Dale Long.
- 39:07Colfax ready.
- 39:09Sandy winds in the 3-2.
- 39:10Fastball on the corner, called strike three and Dale Long is caught looking.
- 39:15Jaws away with Tom Gorman, but let us pause now for station identification.
- 39:20Now 1460 WOKO for the Brooklyn Dodgers games and write to WOKO for the complete Dodgers schedule of games at home and away.
- 39:27You're free for the asking.
- 39:28Be sure to give your name and address.
- 39:30That's right, baseball WOKO Albany, New York.
- 39:34And New York.
- 39:40All right, back at Ebbets Field, two out on the second inning, Cal Neiman, the batter and the first pitching for the strike on one.
- 39:46It was a very troubled and bitter Dale Long who left the plate.
- 39:50He took his helmet off and fired it about 25 feet along the box seats.
- 39:54That boy had to run down the line to get it.
- 39:58Colfax has now struck out four men in an inning and two-thirds.
- 40:02Sandy right back and it looked like he changed up and ballooned it too high.
- 40:05One and one.
- 40:07Cal Neiman batting 267.
- 40:09He has six home runs, 15 runs batted in.
- 40:18One and one.
- 40:20Colfax looks into Cabanela.
- 40:22Roy blinks signs out to him.
- 40:24Now the one-one pitch, fast ball, cut on and miss, one and two.
- 40:31Sandy Colfax now has 51 strikeouts to be the leader.
- 40:36He has passed to Roy.
- 40:45Colfax checking again, one and two the count.
- 40:48Sandy hides that ball back of his left hip.
- 40:51Now he's ready.
- 40:52One and two pitch, change curve, fouled at the plate and squirts away from Cabanela.
- 40:56Roy got stung by it a little, hit him off the right knee.
- 41:01One and two, the count to Cal Neiman.
- 41:14Remember tomorrow night at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, Don Kaiser and Don Drysdale.
- 41:20the one and two pitch to Neiman, fast ball got him swinging.
- 41:23He struck out the side.
- 41:28Sandy Colfax has now struck out five men in two innings.
- 41:32Remember the last time he faced the Cubs, he struck out 13.
- 41:35At the end of an inning and a half, Brooklyn 3, Chicago nothing.
- 41:39Now here's Jerry.
- 41:40You want a glass of beer?
- 41:42You want a good glass of beer?
- 41:44You want a great glass of beer?
- 41:47You want a glass of Schaeffer beer?
- 41:50Because Schaeffer's brewed for enjoyment, that's why.
- 41:53That's the whole story in a nutshell.
- 41:56Schaeffer is brewed to give you all the enjoyment, all the light, dusty flavor, all the brilliant sparkle and zing
- 42:04you look for when you lift a glass of beer to your lips.
- 42:07And when you lift a glass of Schaeffer, man, it's sunlight on a drift of snow, cool and white and wonderful.
- 42:15You try it yourself.
- 42:17First time a thirst catches up with you.
- 42:19For real enjoyment, pour out a foaming glass of Schaeffer.
- 42:23You'll see it's real beer.
- 42:29the Dodgers come on with Zimmer, Colfax and Amarillo first two up here against Dick Grott.
- 42:34And the battle of the strikeout artist goes on.
- 42:36Colfax now ahead five to two.
- 42:38Dodgers leading three to nothing.
- 42:40So let's get back to playing.
- 42:41Here again is Ben.
- 42:42Well, Don Zimmer will be first up.
- 42:44Then put your Sandy Colfax and Sandy Amarillo's bottom of the second three nothing Brooklyn.
- 42:53We understand at the agency that we now have a young girl writing commercial copy.
- 43:00And I'll bet you her fine hand was in that last one.
- 43:03Sunlight on a drift of snow.
- 43:07All right.
- 43:10Zimmer batting 229.
- 43:12He has four home runs, 13 runs batted in.
- 43:15Dots fastball is uppercutted and fouled by Cal Nieman on the run, stumbles.
- 43:19He doesn't have a play, remains on his feet.
- 43:310-1 to count to Zimmer.
- 43:34Last of the second inning, three nothing Brooklyn, bottom of the second.
- 43:43Dick Grott looks in to get his sign.
- 43:45Zimmer bends at the knees a little bit more now.
- 43:48And the strike one pitch fastball cut on is a high foul to the right of the plate.
- 43:52Nieman coming back right to the lip of the Dodger dugout and can't make it.
- 43:56the ball lands on the roof.
- 43:58And somebody makes a great catch by the name of Barney Stein.
- 44:03Barney who takes great sports photos for the New York Post.
- 44:06He's also the Brooklyn Dodgers official photographer.
- 44:09And that thing kangarooed from the dugout roof right up into the camera booth.
- 44:13And there was Barney to grab it.
- 44:21He dropped a $9,000 camera in the process.
- 44:24No, not really.
- 44:260-2.
- 44:28Fastball is outside, knocked down by Cal Nieman.
- 44:30One ball, two strikes.
- 44:34We're in the last of the second, Brooklyn three, Chicago nothing.
- 44:37Everybody a little extra chipper tonight now that we're home.
- 44:44Grott to his windup and delivers.
- 44:46Curved ball in there, called strike threes.
- 44:49Zimmer knew it and walked away.
- 44:53That's the third strikeout for Dick Grott.
- 44:56the eighth strikeout on the game and we have one out in the bottom of the second.
- 45:01Now the last time anything like this began was out at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
- 45:07Mo Drabowski struck out eight men.
- 45:10Kofax struck out 13.
- 45:13the record, the total for a ballgame, 24.
- 45:18the national is 23.
- 45:20So we'll keep an eye on it.
- 45:22Pitch to Kofax in for the strike on one.
- 45:24On that particular day, the total of strikeouts tied the National League record, 23.
- 45:30We're starting to build up to something like that again tonight.
- 45:33Strike one, pitch to Kofax.
- 45:35Up high, one and one.
- 45:43Want to know who had the other two strikeouts.
- 45:45Turk Lown in relief.
- 45:49One and one to Sandy Kofax.
- 45:51Grott ready and delivers.
- 45:52Fastball cut on late and missed, one and two.
- 45:56Kofax is 0 for 10, but he has shown progress.
- 45:58the last few times up he's hit the ball and once or twice fairly well.
- 46:06Grott getting his sign.
- 46:08Kofax waiting.
- 46:09Now the one and two pitch to Sandy.
- 46:11Fastball got him.
- 46:12So down he goes.
- 46:14Four strikeouts for Dick Grott.
- 46:20So that sword has two edges.
- 46:22Kofax has been cutting down the Cubs and now he nubs the finger himself.
- 46:28Kofax struck out all three men in the second inning.
- 46:31Grott has struck out three in a row as he faces Amaros here in the second.
- 46:38Grott ready and delivers.
- 46:39Slow curve in for the strike.
- 46:42Charlie Neal struck out to close out the first inning and here in the second Zimmer and Kofax have gone that way.
- 46:48They're missing plenty of strikeouts.
- 46:52Amaros batting 314, popped out in the first inning, 0 for 1.
- 46:56Grott delivers.
- 46:57Fastball low, one and one.
- 47:02At the end of two innings we'll be ducking in scores all night long.
- 47:05the Phillies are leading Cincinnati 3 to nothing at the end of two innings.
- 47:09the Giants are leading Milwaukee 2 to 1 at the end of two innings.
- 47:14the Yankees leading Cleveland 3-1 at the end of an inning and a half.
- 47:17Slow curve filed away at the plate, one and two.
- 47:23Schaefer-Beers sending it all to you.
- 47:26Hope you'll have a cold Schaefer while you're listening to the ballgame.
- 47:35the one and two pitch now to Amaros.
- 47:37Fastball low, two and two.
- 47:42We have two out in the second inning, we've had nine strikeouts in the ballgame.
- 47:48Kofax has struck out five, Dick Grott has struck out four.
- 47:53the two-two pitch, Amaros.
- 47:55Fastball just low, ball three.
- 47:58Three and two.
- 48:04Grott is not overpowering.
- 48:06In fact, I don't think he even looks quite his weight.
- 48:08He's even six and he weighs 185 pounds.
- 48:11Three-two pitch, Amaros.
- 48:13Outside, ball four.
- 48:16Oh, Sandy Amaros walks with two out in the second inning.
- 48:18It is the fourth walk given up by Dick Grott.
- 48:22Brooklyn three, Chicago nothing, and the batter, Jim Gilliam.
- 48:26Jim walked in the first inning.
- 48:28Was the front man on a double steal, actually was a run and hit play, and some only struck out.
- 48:33And on the late throw to third, which went into left field, Gilliam picked himself up and came in to score.
- 48:39Jim batting 251.
- 48:44Grott up on the rubber now and comes set.
- 48:46Takes a peek at Amaros, two down.
- 48:49Comes to the plate and the fastball is outside, ball one.
- 48:54I'll tell you one thing, when you're behind a pitcher like Dick Grott,
- 48:57say the outfielders tonight, Bob Spiek and Lee Walls and Frank Ornega,
- 49:01they really have to fight themselves to bear down and get a pitcher having trouble with control,
- 49:07and it's tough for the outfielders.
- 49:09the 1-0 pitch to Gilliam, cut on a big bouncer right the day along.
- 49:12He goes up the ladder to grab it and steps on the bag and that's it.
- 49:17In the second inning, no runs, no hits.
- 49:20There was one man left on base.
- 49:22At the end of two innings at play, Brooklyn three, Chicago nothing.
- 49:25Once again, a few words from Jerry.

- 50:18followed by Dick Drought and then by the leadoff man Bobby Morgan.
- 50:21Sandy Koufax now has five strikeouts, Dick Drought has four.
- 50:24So we're really having one going here tonight.
- 50:27Dodgers three, Cubs nothing. Top of the third, back to action and here again is Vim.
- 50:32Jack Luttrell stepping in and batting 140 with three runs batted in.
- 50:37Want to spotlight something we forgot about before. Pay tribute to a fine group.
- 50:46Koufax checking his signs now at Campanella. Sandy winds and delivers. Fastball for a strike.
- 50:53On hand tonight, the typical Brooklyn family selected by the Brooklyn Historical Society.
- 50:59Mr. and Mrs. Gerald O'Donnell and their children are guests of the Dodgers tonight.
- 51:04Strike one, pitch the curve a little high, one and one.
- 51:07Mr. and Mrs. O'Donnell and their family live at 2683 Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.
- 51:14And we're certainly happy to have them here.
- 51:21the one-one pitch to Jack Luttrell, fastball outside, ball two, two and one.
- 51:27Start of the third inning, Brooklyn three, Chicago nothing. Sandy Koufax and Dick Drought.
- 51:35Koufax checking signs again with Campy. Now the two-one pitch. Fastball cut on and missed, two and two.
- 51:42Well I might have said earlier, in the first two batters up there, that Koufax appeared not to be loose.
- 51:48But now he is firing. He struck out the side in the second inning.
- 51:55Two balls, two strikes. Luttrell then pitcher Dick Drought and leadoff man Bobby Morgan.
- 52:03Koufax ready now to his windup. the two-twoer. Fastball got him swinging.
- 52:09Luttrell strikes out. Four strikeouts in a row for Koufax. He has struck out six men in two and a third innings.
- 52:18In other words, eight men have come to bat. And only one of them has hit the ball.
- 52:27That was Lee Walz who popped up. the other man walked.
- 52:37Curve is fouled away by pitcher Drought, 0-1. Drought batting 2-11.
- 52:45Koufax is remarkable with his strikeouts this year. Figure out how many innings he's pitched and then look at his strikeout, you really start to shake your head.
- 52:54the strike one pitch to Drought. Curve ball low, 1-1.
- 52:58Then he has struck out six men tonight thus far in two and a third innings to give him 53 strikeouts. Now let's check his innings.
- 53:10He's worked 44 and a third innings. Struck out 53 men. the 1-1 is fastball cut on and bellied to left field.
- 53:18Here goes Ambrose, a way back to the wall and grabs it, going away.
- 53:29Don't pitch your dig Drought. It's a long fly ball to left center for the second out.
- 53:38Bobby Morgan struck out in the first inning. Bob batting 2-77.
- 53:46Brooklyn 3, Chicago nothing in the third inning.
- 53:55Cabanela settling now, back of the plate to hang out his signs. Morgan waiting. the outfield about straight away.
- 54:02Koufax sends him a fastball for a strike on one.
- 54:10You know the record of course for the most strikeouts in one game. I'm pretty sure, at least you'd know the name of the fellow who did it in one game.
- 54:20He doesn't play anymore but he just retired.
- 54:24Strike one pitch, cut on, hit off the thumbs and popped up in the very shallow left. Ambrose comes running in under it now and takes it to the out.
- 54:32Morgan pops out to shallow left field. the Cubs go out in order 1-2-3. Koufax has retired the last eight men in a row. the guy who struck out 18 was Bob Feller and now here's Jerry.
- 54:44You know folks, the Schaeffer people have been brewing their famous beer for 115 years now. It's America's oldest lager beer.
- 54:52But that doesn't mean you can't get it in the newest of containers. No sir, the Schaeffer people keep right up with the times.
- 54:59Here's a handy Schaeffer half quart can for instance, designed for modern living.
- 55:05Trim and slim, it's a cinch to carry, a cinch to tuck away inside your refrigerator. Takes up hardly any room and it cools in a flash too.
- 55:15Inside you've got 16 ounces of tasty pleasure. Two full glasses of golden amber Schaeffer beer.
- 55:23A drink for young couples who like to share their fun. Old friends who want to clink glasses. Anybody who's just plain thirsty.
- 55:31So next time you're out shopping, why not pick up a few six packs of handy Schaeffer half quart cans.
- 55:39Each one holds two full glasses of real enjoyment. That Schaeffer beer man, it's real beer.
- 55:51Last but not least, Duke Snyder, Geno Somoli and Gil Hodge's do-up for Brooklyn. Score Dodgers three, Cubs nothing. Back to play and here again is Vinn.
- 55:59Talking about strikeouts now, since they might very well become a very important part of the game, Dick Drott has struck out four, Sandy Koufax has struck out six.
- 56:10the National League record for the total of strikeouts, 23 in a game. the American League record, 24.
- 56:17the most strikeout by an individual in one game, Bob Feller, struck out 18. the National League record is 17 by Dizzy Dean.
- 56:26You might be thinking about those things, so we pass them along to you. All right, bottom of the third, three, nothing, Brooklyn. Duke Snyder, Geno Somoli and Gil Hodge's.
- 56:34Snyder walked in the first inning, Duke batting 245.
- 56:40Drott has a sign now, Dick Wines and delivers. Fastball cut on is a high drive to deep center field, going way back near the bleachers, just watching it is gone. Lee Wall just had to let it go.
- 56:52And the ball bounces out of the lower deck of the bleachers. Wall picks it up and throws it in the upper deck.
- 57:08And there's a man at home running the lower deck right now. Snyder hit a bullet into the seats. It bounced high in the air back out of the field.
- 57:15Wall's caught it just as nice as you please and fired it upstairs in the upper deck. So Snyder hits his tenth home run, his 21st run batted in.
- 57:23the Dodgers lead four to nothing and Geno Somoli takes a pitch inside and drives him out of there. Ball one.
- 57:36He hit a second hit for Brooklyn. the other, a double by Kambinella.
- 57:43Drott Wines and the one-oh pitch to Somoli, a fastball outside, ball two, two and oh.
- 57:51Shae for Beers sending you all the fun and excitement from Ebbets Field in Brooklyn.
- 57:56Four to nothing Dodgers here in the third. the two-oh pitch to Somoli, fastball down low, ball three, three and oh.
- 58:15Drott Wines and the three-oh pitch to Somoli at his knees and over for the strike, three and one. On deck, Gil Hodges.
- 58:22Brooklyn four runs on two hits. Chicago no runs, no hits, one error. That a throwing error by catcher Cal Neiman.
- 58:30Three-one pitch, fastball filed away. Trickling on over into the cub dugout.
- 58:39Three and two.
- 58:52Drott checks the signs. Now the three-two pitch to Somoli, drives him back high and tight, ball four.
- 58:58To Somoli walks, that is the fifth walk given up by Dick Drott. Colfax who has struck out six is not walk-a-man.
- 59:15the batter, Gil Hodges, who walked in the first inning. Gil batting three forty-four.
- 59:22Nobody out here in the third. Brooklyn four, Chicago nothing.
- 59:29Drott looks in to get his sign. Right at the bag is Somoli, held on by Dale Long.
- 59:35Now the right-hander delivers, fastball cut on and missed, two and one.
- 59:39I think Hodges trying to go to right field that time, the way he moved his feet.
- 59:43He certainly had right field of Frank Ornega thinking that way, for he was heading towards the foul line.
- 59:48On one account, one of the big reasons why Hodges is now a fine hitter.
- 59:54the fact that he's been able to hit that pitch to right.
- 59:57Strike one pitch to him, curveball cut on it to left center.
- 1:00:01On the run coming over is Walls, bends down and traps the ball.
- 1:00:05Somoli is around second going to third and will beat the throw.
- 1:00:09And down to third goes Hodges. Lee Walls tried to backhand the ball at his ankles.
- 1:00:14And all he could do was trap it. So Hodges doubles.
- 1:00:19Somoli of course had to hold up and now gets as far as third.
- 1:00:28So the Dodgers have three hits off Dick Drott, two doubles and a home run.
- 1:00:33They have run as a second and third with nobody out in the battle.
- 1:00:36Roy Campanella who doubled in two runs in the first inning.
- 1:00:41Jim Brosnan gets up now in the Chicago bullpen and begins to loosen up.
- 1:00:47Big right-hander. Campanella hitting 245.
- 1:00:52the infield must play in tight now, nobody out.
- 1:00:55Somoli at third, Hodges at second.
- 1:00:58Four-nothing Brooklyn here in the third inning, they're trying to break it wide open.
- 1:01:03Drott to his wind-up and delivers and Campanella is hit by the pitch in the ribs.
- 1:01:08On the left side, just under his number, Doc Wendler comes out and boy that hurt.
- 1:01:13A fastball right in the rib. So Campanella with his left hand holding his ribs, walking up along first.
- 1:01:21Walter Olson comes out now and Wendler refuses to let Campanella walk. He stops him right there.
- 1:01:27Boy that thing hurt. That was a sidearm fastball that just sailed right in at him and hit him right at the ribs.
- 1:01:34Roy bent over slightly, Doc Wendler with his arm around him.
- 1:01:38So more complications, you know, Rube Walker has a couple of stitches on his right hand.
- 1:01:43Campanella trying to breathe and I imagine every time he does there's a sharp bite of pain.
- 1:01:49Doc Wendler, Jake Fuddler and Walter Olson watching the catcher, still rubbing his left side.
- 1:01:55He has his back to it but I'm pretty sure he got it right in the ribs.
- 1:01:59Roy wants to stay in the ballgame, starting to go to first. Now Carl Erskine comes out to run for him.
- 1:02:05And Erskine continues on towards first base so whether Campanella likes it or not, they want him to come out.
- 1:02:10Roy of course likes to play but he's hurting.
- 1:02:14Yep, he got it on the left side, probably just under the heart.
- 1:02:19And Campanella comes out. He's walking a little better now but boy he was shaken up.
- 1:02:24So Dick Drott with a fastball, it's Campanella in the chest or the left side near the ribs and he comes out.
- 1:02:30Erskine running for him, the bases are loaded, nobody out.
- 1:02:34And the batter Charlie Neal, the infield remains up tight.
- 1:02:38Somoli at third, Hodges at second, Erskine at first.
- 1:02:41Drott delivers fastball, cut foul to the roof and out of the ballpark.
- 1:02:450-1. Roy Campanella hit either just under the heart or around the ribs.
- 1:02:58Erskine running for him and Ruub Walker with a couple of stitches in his right hand will still come back into the ballgame.
- 1:03:05Neal waiting, Drott winds and the strike one fits, curve fouled away, 0-2.
- 1:03:260-2 to Neal, nobody out, bases loaded, 4-0 Brooklyn in the third.
- 1:03:30Drott delivers, sidearm curve, it through the hole in the left field for a base hit.
- 1:03:34In comes Somoli, right back of him is Hodges and the Dodgers lead 6-0.
- 1:03:40Charlie Neal bounces one through the drawn in left side and drives in two.
- 1:03:46the Dodgers didn't score this many runs in the entire trip through Pennsylvania.
- 1:03:57And here in the third inning they lead 6-0.
- 1:04:01O'Neill with a base hit and two runs batted in, Bob Sheffing going out to the mound and maybe we'll have a change right here.
- 1:04:08Somoli scoring from third base, Hodges coming in from second.
- 1:04:13That's the fourth hit of Dick Drott.
- 1:04:18Sheffing making his way out to the mound, Cal Nieman is there.
- 1:04:22Carl Erskine at second, Charlie Neal at first, Brooklyn six runs on four hits.
- 1:04:27Chicago no runs no hits, we're in the bottom of the third.
- 1:04:30Brooklyn scored three times in the first inning, three times in the third.
- 1:04:34And still nobody out here in the third.
- 1:04:37We'll have a change of pitches and while we do have, suppose we duck in a station break, make everything legal.
- 1:04:42We'll pause the station identification.
- 1:04:44This is the Brooklyn Dodgers radio network.
- 1:04:47For the Thompson.
- 1:04:52Dial 1460WOKO for the Brooklyn Dodgers games and write to WOKO for the complete Dodgers schedule of games at home and away.
- 1:04:59You're free for the asking. Be sure to give your name and address.
- 1:05:02Write Baseball WOKO Albany, New York.
- 1:05:07Back here at Edwards Field with the Dodgers leading six to nothing.
- 1:05:11Dick Drott worked two innings plus.
- 1:05:15He relieved by Jim Brosnan.
- 1:05:17Drott in two innings plus gave up six runs.
- 1:05:20the run is at first and second also belonged to him.
- 1:05:23Drott six runs four hits.
- 1:05:25He walked five men. Of course that was his undoing.
- 1:05:28He hit one man, Campanella.
- 1:05:30And while we're talking about Campanella, wondering whether the ball hit him in the ribs or under the heart.
- 1:05:35We now have the report from the dugout that it hit him just under the or over the heart right around that area.
- 1:05:40Really stunned him.
- 1:05:42Well, Campanella out.
- 1:05:44Jim Brosnan warming up now to take over for Drott.
- 1:05:46He'll be pitching to Zimmer, Koufax and Amoros.
- 1:05:50I'll give you a Brosnan's record this year, but Jerry will tell you a little bit about him before we get back to the ballgame.
- 1:05:55Jim's a pretty good sized boy, Vinny. Six four, weighs 215 pounds.
- 1:05:59And he was with Chicago last year. He won five and lost nine.
- 1:06:02He was with the Cubs for a brief while in 1954.
- 1:06:06He had a one and 0 record in the National League.
- 1:06:08He's been playing mostly in double A, triple A.
- 1:06:11And then in the major leagues for those two shots that we told you about, in 1954.
- 1:06:15And last year with the Cubs, he was in 30 ball games.
- 1:06:18Five wins and nine losses. His lifetime major league record is six and nine.
- 1:06:23So Jim Brosnan now in to replace Nick Drott.
- 1:06:27Drott going out with a record of three five and is now behind six to nothing.
- 1:06:31In two innings plus, six runs, four hits, four strikeouts and five walks.
- 1:06:37So Don Zimmer steps in now to face the new big right hander.
- 1:06:41Let's get back to play. And here again is Vin.
- 1:06:43Well, that a new line to the history book on Jim Brosnan.
- 1:06:45This is his 12th appearance for the Cubs. He started once.
- 1:06:48He is 0 and 1 with the league.
- 1:06:50B-R-O-S-N-A-N Jim Brosnan.
- 1:06:55Brooklyn six, Chicago nothing. Nobody out in the third inning.
- 1:06:59Carliskin running for a camp and a lot second.
- 1:07:02Charlie Neal just chased in two runs with a base hitters at first.
- 1:07:05Don Zimmer struck out in the second inning.
- 1:07:08Brosnan checks his runners. Now comes the plate.
- 1:07:10Overhand fastball, cut on and missed.
- 1:07:12the ball gets away from Neiman, but not far enough for the runners to advance.
- 1:07:16On one to count.
- 1:07:18In the Dodger bullpen, and gee, it could be quite a night.
- 1:07:21Joe Pignatano is a Brooklyn boy.
- 1:07:24He has not caught a pitch in the major leagues, and he's very close to it.
- 1:07:32He appeared as a pinch runner, but he's never been behind the plate.
- 1:07:34Wouldn't be a great thing to have the boy in the game tonight.
- 1:07:37If the Dodgers, with this comfortable lead of six, nothing, might very well decide.
- 1:07:40Now to give him a chance.
- 1:07:43the 0 and 1 pitch to Don Zimmer. Curveball.
- 1:07:45It's slowly to third. Banks up with it, goes back to Morgan, they get one.
- 1:07:48On to first in time for the double play.
- 1:07:51And down to third goes Carl Erskine.
- 1:07:54Oh, the double play, five to four to three.
- 1:07:58Say, I'll tell you what, you might know the Pignatanos.
- 1:08:01If you do, maybe his wife taking care of the baby, not watching or listening to the ballgame.
- 1:08:06Give her a call.
- 1:08:08Looks like Joe's going to break into the major leagues tonight.
- 1:08:19Randy Koufax coming up, struck out in the second inning. He's 0 for 11.
- 1:08:24Two out in the third inning, six nothing Brooklyn.
- 1:08:27Carl Erskine now at third base, running for Campanella.
- 1:08:30Brosnan winds and delivers, and the curveball a little high, ball one.
- 1:08:35Pretty sure I saw Pignatano putting on the gear.
- 1:08:39Campanella hit under the heart with a fastball, had to come out.
- 1:08:42Rube Walker has a couple of stitches in his hand.
- 1:08:44He could play, with the Dodgers leading six nothing in the third, might let Pignatano catch.
- 1:08:49Curve is down low, ball two.
- 1:08:55That'd be real nice.
- 1:09:00Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:09:04No pitch to Koufax, he runs up and looks at it, it's in for a strike, two and one.
- 1:09:09Boy, Joe's got a little baby boy who might well put on the gear and go back to the plate.
- 1:09:13Boy, what a stocky kid.
- 1:09:15Wow.
- 1:09:18Dad might get in tonight.
- 1:09:22Brosnan ready in the two one pitch, fastball on the outside corner, two and two.
- 1:09:27Two down, bottom of the third inning, Brooklyn six, Chicago nothing.
- 1:09:30Yes, it's kind of a one sided game thus far, but you have a couple of things going.
- 1:09:34Sandy Koufax has struck out six men, he is not allowed a hit.
- 1:09:38He does not walk to anybody.
- 1:09:40Pignatano might break into the majors, so stay right with us.
- 1:09:44Fastball is low, ball three.
- 1:09:47Full count to Sandy.
- 1:09:52Jim Brosnan in relief of Dick Drott.
- 1:09:55Tomorrow night we'll be at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City.
- 1:09:58Don Drysdale and Don Kaiser.
- 1:10:01the three two pitch to Koufax.
- 1:10:03Fastball in there, Sandy's caught looking and strikes out for the second time.
- 1:10:09For the Dodgers in the third inning, they pick up three more runs.
- 1:10:14There were three hits, a home run, a double and a single.
- 1:10:17One man left on and one man hit by a pitch, Campanello had to leave.
- 1:10:22And Joe Pignatano is putting on the gears.
- 1:10:24Welcome to the club, Joe, and lots of luck.
- 1:10:27Carl Erskine is stopping to talk to him right now.
- 1:10:30While Pignatano, a Brooklyn boy, finally plants his spikes back on home plate
- 1:10:34and takes a few warm-up tosses, let's check with our Shaper scoreboard.
- 1:10:39Milwaukee and the Giants, at the end of two and a half innings of play.

- 1:12:14Passball comes low from Koufax.
- 1:12:16One ball, no strikes on Bob Speak.
- 1:12:18Speak hitting in the number two spot.
- 1:12:21Hitting at 2.43.
- 1:12:23Ernie Banks on deck and Lee Walls down in the hole.
- 1:12:28the wind up and the 1-0 pitch.
- 1:12:30Infra-strike, passball in this 1-1.
- 1:12:33One ball, one strike to Bob Speak.
- 1:12:38the Cubs have had one man on. Speak walks in the first inning.
- 1:12:44Sandy checks the sign, winds and fires.
- 1:12:47the pitch is low for a ball and the count goes two and one.
- 1:12:50Two balls, one strike.
- 1:12:54the Dodgers got three in the first and three more in the third off starter Dick Drott.
- 1:13:00Who then was relieved by Jim Brosnan.
- 1:13:04Strike two with a fastball over the plate at the knees and it's a 2-2 count.
- 1:13:16Johnny Neal wide at third in a step or two against a left hand batter.
- 1:13:21Speak waiting.
- 1:13:22Here's the 2-2 pitch.
- 1:13:24A bouncer foul down the first base line.
- 1:13:31Handled in the first base coaching box by Freddie Fitzsimmons.
- 1:13:36Can't hold the 2-2 on Bob Speak.
- 1:13:39Dodgers home after a long road trip.
- 1:13:43the Western trip was interrupted by three games here at Rebbets Field against the Giants.
- 1:13:47Then back they went to Pennsylvania for some more on the road.
- 1:13:50And now back home for 15 games and 13 days.
- 1:13:54Couple of big double hitters coming on. We will tell you about those a little later.
- 1:13:582-2, Kofak shakes off a sign from Pignatano, gets another one.
- 1:14:02Wind up in the 2-2 pitch.
- 1:14:04Fastball just missed the outside corner at 3-2.
- 1:14:08So a full count on Bob Speak.
- 1:14:11Number 11 left hand batter.
- 1:14:233-2.
- 1:14:25Kofak takes his time to wind up and here's the pitch.
- 1:14:28High fly ball to right field.
- 1:14:30Simoli backs up.
- 1:14:32Waiting now and Mozena step or two and makes the play for the out one away.
- 1:14:36Speak's guys out high on the right.
- 1:14:39One up, one down and here's Ernie Banks coming on.
- 1:14:41One down, swinging first time.
- 1:14:43Ernie off to a slow start for him this year hitting just the 2-29.
- 1:14:48He has five home runs and 15 runs battered in.
- 1:14:52Banks the batter with walls on deck and Frank Ornega to follow.
- 1:14:57One out, none on. Fourth inning, Dodgers 6, Chicago Cubs nothing.
- 1:15:06the Cubs in seventh place just a half game ahead of the Pirates.
- 1:15:10Trying to stay out of the cold hole.
- 1:15:12Here's a bounder foul past third.
- 1:15:16Strike one.
- 1:15:18Nothing in one to Banks.
- 1:15:20Kofak gets a new one to work with now.
- 1:15:23Pignatano replaced Campanella, plunked in the ribs, above the ribs by fastball from Dick Drott.
- 1:15:30Can't be had to retire from the game.
- 1:15:33Here's the 0-1 pitch by Kofak.
- 1:15:35Fastball swung on a miss.
- 1:15:37Strike two.
- 1:15:38Sandy pulled the string very well that time.
- 1:15:40Changed up and Banks was fooled.
- 1:15:42Nothing in two.
- 1:15:46One out, none on. Fourth inning.
- 1:15:54Sandy ready to wind up and pitch.
- 1:15:56Fastball got him swinging.
- 1:15:57Down goes Frank for the second time tonight and for Kofak strikeout number seven.
- 1:16:04So in three and two-thirds innings, Kofak has chalked up seven strikeouts,
- 1:16:08which is a better pace than he had when he struck out 13 Cubs out at Wrigley Field.
- 1:16:13Lee Walz coming on.
- 1:16:15Popped out his first time.
- 1:16:18And is hitting 224.
- 1:16:21Center fielder Lee Walz.
- 1:16:23Two outs, none on.
- 1:16:24Fourth inning, Cubs have had just one base runner speak who walked in the first inning.
- 1:16:29Slow curve is up high on this ball.
- 1:16:31One.
- 1:16:33Dodger six. Cubs nothing.
- 1:16:35Top of the fourth inning at Ebbets Field and Schaeffer Bear.
- 1:16:38Happy to send it to you tonight.
- 1:16:41Hope you enjoy the game. We know you'll enjoy Schaeffer.
- 1:16:45Fastball strike one.
- 1:16:47Count evens now. One-one on Lee Walz.
- 1:16:50Walz blocked a bunt that time and Charlie Neal came charging in from third.
- 1:16:55It's Neal, Zimmer, Gilliam, and Hodges on the Dodger infield.
- 1:16:58the outfield, Amarillo, Snyder, and Somoli.
- 1:17:01Big Natano catching and Kofax pitching.
- 1:17:04Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:17:06Up high with a fastball. It's ball two. Two and one.
- 1:17:11Two outs, none on. Fourth innings, Chicago at bat.
- 1:17:21Kofax checks again with Big Natano delivers.
- 1:17:24the fastball is low and outside. Ball free.
- 1:17:27Three and one to Lee Walz.
- 1:17:30Well, a big set coming up over the weekend. Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday a doubleheader.
- 1:17:36Cincinnati Redlegs coming to town over the weekend.
- 1:17:38We hope you've got your tickets and plan to be here.
- 1:17:41That'll be a big set.
- 1:17:44Three-one pitch on the way.
- 1:17:47Ball four, up high, walking. So Walz is on. That's walk number two given up by Sandy Kofax.
- 1:17:53Second base winner for Chicago and Frank Renega coming on.
- 1:18:03Two outs, one on. Renega the batter struck out first time, hitting 333.
- 1:18:13Kofax now working out of the stretch for the second time tonight.
- 1:18:17Sixth off a time, gets a new one. Two outs, one on. Cubs batting. Pitch.
- 1:18:23Fastball for a strike on the outside corner, knee high.
- 1:18:290-1 to Frank Renega, E-R-N-A-G-A.
- 1:18:35Frank brought up just after the season opened from Portland.
- 1:18:42One-and-one. Pitch. Curveball high over the bill of the cap, but it's ball one.
- 1:18:47Even count now. One ball, one strike.
- 1:19:01One-and-one. Walz playing it close to the bag at first.
- 1:19:06Renega is holding him on. Curveball for strike two. Renega had an ocean, checked his swing, and it cost him one ball, two strikes.
- 1:19:18the Cubs right fielder Frank Renega. Should he get on, day along is due next.
- 1:19:25One-and-two count. Kofax checks again, delivers.
- 1:19:30A wild pitch, gets fast, takes it down to back to the wire, and down to second base goes Walz.
- 1:19:35Makes his turn there and holds on as Pignatonic goes back to the screen to retrieve.
- 1:19:40A high one. And it's a wild pitch charged against Sandy Kofax.
- 1:19:46Pignatonic just able to get a tip of the glove on it, and couldn't slow it down.
- 1:19:52So the Cubs have a man at second with two out, Walz on there, and Renega has a two-two count.
- 1:20:05Turn two on the batter, two outs, and a man on at second. Badger six, Cubs nothing, top of the fourth.
- 1:20:12Now the check by Kofax, and here's his pitch. Fastball high, game ball free.
- 1:20:18Sold the count to Renega, full, three-two.
- 1:20:22Walz moves on, second, Kofax ready, three-two count. Here's the pitch.
- 1:20:40Got him swinging, down he goes, bad retire.
- 1:20:43Kofax strikeout number eight in four innings. So he's been rolling along here with an average of two innings.
- 1:20:49Right out in the fourth inning for the Cubs, no runs, no hits, no errors, and they left one man on.
- 1:20:55So at the end of three of the happenings to play, it's the Dodgers six, Chicago Cubs nothing.
- 1:21:01And now here it's been.
- 1:21:06Well isn't it a fact, friends, as many times as your favorite player comes through in the clutch, you always get a kick out of it.
- 1:21:12It does your heart good every time. Well let me tell you about something else that will do your heart good every single time,
- 1:21:18and I'm talking about a tall, cool glass of Schaefer beer.
- 1:21:22Yes sir, Schaefer is beer at its best in any man's league. It's got to be.
- 1:21:26Because Schaefer is brewed for enjoyment. Brewed to give you all a zesty, satisfying flavor you want, but don't always find.
- 1:21:33the Schaefer folks select rich barley malt, tangy hops, and other fine, natural ingredients.
- 1:21:39Then they add their own special ingredient, the brewing skill that comes from 115 years of experience.
- 1:21:45So for real enjoyment, how about having a tall, foaming glass of Schaefer beer right about now, and you'll agree about Schaefer,
- 1:21:52and it's real beer. Skoll, post, here's mud in your eyes.
- 1:22:12Last of the fourth inning, Brooklyn six runs, four hits, and no errors, but another story is building up now,
- 1:22:17for the Cubs have been at bat for four innings, and Copax is not allowed a hit, and has struck out eight.
- 1:22:23So you stay right where you be and listen to Jerry.
- 1:22:26Okay Vinnie, top of the fourth inning, it'll be Sandy Amarose, Jim Gilliam, and Duke Snider coming on.
- 1:22:33Amarose has walked and popped out. Jim Brosnan came on to relieve starter Dick Drought in the third,
- 1:22:39and got Zimmer to bounce in the double play, and struck out Copax, so he's quieted the noise.
- 1:22:45Dodgers three in the first and three in the third. So here we go now, the last half of the fourth inning.
- 1:22:57Jim Brosnan warming up with catcher Cal Nieman, and Amarose steps in and we're ready to go.
- 1:23:02Last of the fourth inning, Brosnan in the lineup, and here's the pitch to Sandy.
- 1:23:06Third ball drops in for a strike. Sandy hitting three-fourteen.
- 1:23:14Gilliam on deck, and then Snider to follow.
- 1:23:18Strike one count.
- 1:23:20Big Jim delivers. Up high, ball one, count evens one-one to Amarose.
- 1:23:33the Chicago defense moves around to the right to play Amarose to pull.
- 1:23:37Here's the one-one pitch.
- 1:23:39Serve again high outside, ball two, two and one.
- 1:23:42Banks is wide a third and in a step or two.
- 1:23:46Shortstop Jack Luttrell shading second just a bit.
- 1:23:49Morgan and Long deep on the right side, and the outfield moves around a bit to the right to play against Sandy.
- 1:23:55Two-one pitch. Down it comes.
- 1:23:58Third of the tenth for a strike at the knees, and it's two-two to Amarose.
- 1:24:19Here's the pitch.
- 1:24:21A bouncer off to the right side coming on fast forward as Morgan has played a first at the time and it's one away.
- 1:24:26Amarose rolls out second to first.
- 1:24:29So we have one up, one down, and oncoming is Junior Gilliam.
- 1:24:32Walks, scored a run, and grounded out.
- 1:24:36At the end of four and a half in Philadelphia, three, Cincinnati nothing.
- 1:24:40Milwaukee now taking the lead on the Giants at the end of four and a half, four to three.
- 1:24:48Gilliam hitting two-fifty.
- 1:24:51Drossman, the big right-hander, Texas sign with catcher Cal Nieman.
- 1:24:56Here's the windup and pitch.
- 1:24:58Fastball skips from the third at the plate, ball one.
- 1:25:04Banks in a bit closer now than he was on Amarose, still wide of the bag.
- 1:25:08Guarding against the most possible of the two from Junior.
- 1:25:12Here's the windup and the pitch.
- 1:25:14And Junior ran up to butt it, let it go, and it cost him for a strike, one-one.
- 1:25:29One-on-one to Gilliam.
- 1:25:31the windup and pitch.
- 1:25:33Curveball in for a strike on the inside corner.
- 1:25:35Gilliam taking and it's one and two.
- 1:25:38One-up, none-on, last to the fourth.
- 1:25:40Dodgers six, Cubs nothing.
- 1:25:42First of a three-game series, opening a long home stand for Brooklyn.
- 1:25:52Fastball is high on outside, ball two, two-two now.
- 1:26:06Two-on-two to Gilliam, one-out, none-on.
- 1:26:12the windup and the pitch.
- 1:26:14Curveball, bounce foul down the right field line all the way to the Brooklyn bullpen.
- 1:26:19And the count to Gilliam holds up two-on-two.
- 1:26:21As Brosnan gets a new one now, rubs it up.
- 1:26:36Two-two pitch on the way.
- 1:26:39the roller hits the wide of first base.
- 1:26:40Over the board goes Morgan, makes his play it along in time, and it's two-gone.
- 1:26:44Gilliam rolls out as did Amorow, second to first, two-up and two-down.
- 1:26:47And here comes Snyder.
- 1:26:56Here's a further report on Campanella, examined by the team physician, Dr. Kubiak, and reported that he was okay.
- 1:27:05the doc examined his ribs, his heart, said everything's all right.
- 1:27:09Had the wind knocked out of him, and it's going to be a little sore, but should be able to play by tomorrow.
- 1:27:13So a good report on Campy, plunked in the ribs earlier by a big drop fastball.
- 1:27:18Pitch to Snyder on the inside corner for a called strike.
- 1:27:22Snyder has walked it a home run.
- 1:27:24He's one for one and a score twice, hitting 250.
- 1:27:320-1 count.
- 1:27:33Here's the pitch.
- 1:27:34Fastball outside, ball one.
- 1:27:37One ball, one strike on Duke Snyder.
- 1:27:40Gino Somoli on deck, two-outs, fourth inning.
- 1:27:44Dodger, six, Cubs, nothing.
- 1:27:53Brosnan into the windup, and down it comes.
- 1:27:56Duke takes a fastball at the knees for a strike two, and it's one and two.
- 1:28:01One ball, two strikes.
- 1:28:06Brosnan has faced four batters, retired them all.
- 1:28:09He got Zimmerwood two on and got him to hit the double play, then struck out Kofax in the third.
- 1:28:15Got Ambrose and Gilliam on rollers here.
- 1:28:17Snyder swings a hot one past first foul, and the count stays at one and two.
- 1:28:29the Pirates lead the Cardinals one to nothing at the end of two and a half innings of play.
- 1:28:33Yankees six, Cleveland one through three innings of play at Cleveland tonight.
- 1:28:41One and two, the count to Duke Snyder, two-outs, none on.
- 1:28:45Dodger, six, Cubs, nothing.
- 1:28:54Brosnan into the windup, and down it comes.
- 1:28:56Curveball high, and it's ball two. Even count now to Duke, two and two.
- 1:29:09Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:29:14Big Jim whines and fires to Duke.
- 1:29:17Swings and chops a foul, rolling back behind the plate into the Dodger dugout.
- 1:29:22So the count holds at two-two.
- 1:29:28Tomorrow night, the same clubs play at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City,
- 1:29:31and then back again to Evans Field on Thursday.
- 1:29:34Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Sunday a double header with Cincinnati here at Evans Field.
- 1:29:41Here's the pitch.
- 1:29:43Hold on, I missed. Strike three. Snyder going for a slow curve, is out on strike.
- 1:29:47For Brosnan, strikeout number two, and that is the 14th strikeout in the ballgame.

- 1:30:55Chicago coming on to bat in the fifth inning now against Sandy Koufax.
- 1:31:12Day-long first batter up, struck out first time up, and is hitting 241.
- 1:31:17Left-hand batter against Koufax, and now has posted eight strikeouts.
- 1:31:22Cub pitching has recorded six so far.
- 1:31:26Fastball comes in low to long, and it's ball one.
- 1:31:29One ball, no strikes, fifth inning, Dodger six, and the Cubs nothing.
- 1:31:35Long, Nieman and Luttrell, first three do up.
- 1:31:38We have some bullpen activity now for the Cubs,
- 1:31:41indicating the possibility of a pinch hit if we get down to the pitcher's spot.
- 1:31:51Ball two, down to long, and it's two-nothing now.
- 1:31:55Two-oh count, long waiting.
- 1:31:58In the second inning, Koufax struck out the side.
- 1:32:01Here's a fastball to long, he takes first strike, and it's two and one.
- 1:32:06Two balls, one strike.
- 1:32:09Top of the fifth.
- 1:32:12Long wearing number 27 on the back of the gray uniform, two on pitch.
- 1:32:17Low for ball three, three and one.
- 1:32:20Chicago's had two base runners, both on walks off Koufax.
- 1:32:25So Sandy's been mowing them down.
- 1:32:32Starts to pump and holds up, gets a new sign from Joe Pignatano.
- 1:32:37Here's the windup in the three-one pitch.
- 1:32:40Inside, ball four, and long is on to start for fifth.
- 1:32:43Walk number three off Koufax, and it brings on Cal Nieman.
- 1:32:49He struck out his first time up, Nieman is hitting 265.
- 1:32:53Right-hand batter, pretty good-sized boy, Cal Nieman.
- 1:33:00One on, none out, fifth inning Dodgers six, Cubs nothing.
- 1:33:05Joe Pignatano down to give a sign,
- 1:33:08and Koufax now working out of a stretch for the third time tonight.
- 1:33:12the serve is low for a ball, and it's one ball, no strikes.
- 1:33:20In case you joined us late,
- 1:33:21Brooklyn got three in the first off starter Dick Drott,
- 1:33:23and then got three more in the third to drive him to cover.
- 1:33:28Here's the pitch.
- 1:33:30Strike called on a fastball of the letters, and it's one and one.
- 1:33:34Cal Nieman hitting in the number seven spot,
- 1:33:37the shortstop Jack Latrell due up next.
- 1:33:40the pitcher's spot, Jim Brosnan.
- 1:33:45Koufax stretches again.
- 1:33:46the pitch up high with a fastball, and it's ball two, two and one.
- 1:33:59Two balls, one strike, one on, none out.
- 1:34:01Chicago batting in the fifth,
- 1:34:02Cubs leading, the Dodgers leading the Cubs six, nothing.
- 1:34:10A swing and a rest on a fastball, strike two.
- 1:34:14Count evens it two and two.
- 1:34:22Tom Pahulski in the bullpen for the Cubs, big right hander.
- 1:34:28Koufax ready, two, two pitch to the plate.
- 1:34:34Fly ball to center field, Snyder coming on for it.
- 1:34:37Somoli from right center comes in, and Snyder makes the call,
- 1:34:40grabs it for the out.
- 1:34:42So Nieman skies out the Snyder and short right center.
- 1:34:45One away, and here's Jack Latrell, the shortstop.
- 1:34:49the trail is hitting at 138.
- 1:34:55One out and one on.
- 1:35:06Pignatano on the mound talking to Koufax,
- 1:35:08so while he's out there talking, let's duck in a station break.
- 1:35:11This is the Brooklyn Dodgers radio network.
- 1:35:15Ted Brown on the redhead, keep you entertained with chatter,
- 1:35:18music, news, and weather every m-

- 1:35:29You're free for the asking.
- 1:35:31Be sure to give your name and address right baseball WOKO Albany, New York.
- 1:35:55Fly ball at the left field, Sandy Amoros moving in and coming toward the lineup,
- 1:35:59but he's there waiting and makes his play for the out.
- 1:36:02Two away.
- 1:36:03Latrell skies to left, and Jim Brosnan, new up,
- 1:36:07we'll see if he's going to bat.
- 1:36:12Goes to get a helmet, so looks like he's going to come on.
- 1:36:16Two outs, one on.
- 1:36:17Long started the inning with a walk.
- 1:36:22And Brosnan now will be the hitter.
- 1:36:24He goes to the bat rack to pick one out, getting a batting helmet right now.
- 1:36:28Here he comes.
- 1:36:31Dodgers six runs on four hits, the Cubs no runs on no hits.
- 1:36:35Chicago with one error, a throwing error by Cal Lehman in the first inning
- 1:36:39with gotten the first run of the ball game.
- 1:36:42So here's Brosnan up now with two outs and one on.
- 1:36:47Top of the fifth.
- 1:36:49Sandy delivers.
- 1:36:51the fastball is in for a strike.
- 1:36:54the Fax has recorded at least one strikeout in every inning up to now.
- 1:36:59He got two in the first, three in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth.
- 1:37:06Total of eight.
- 1:37:09Fastball outside, ball one.
- 1:37:12Count evens to Brosnan, one and one.
- 1:37:16Joe Pignatana doing the catching.
- 1:37:19Campanella plunks in the ribs in the third inning.
- 1:37:21He's had to leave the ball game, but the doctor reports that he's okay.
- 1:37:25Just going to be a little sore for a day or so.
- 1:37:28the one-one pitch.
- 1:37:30Foul back, straight back to the wire, strike two.
- 1:37:33One and two to pitcher Jim Brosnan.
- 1:37:43Day along, wandered around off first.
- 1:37:45I just kind of ignoring him.
- 1:37:48I'll hold him on.
- 1:37:52One and two.
- 1:37:53Here's the pitch.
- 1:37:54Curveball high, and it's ball two.
- 1:37:56Even count now, two-two.
- 1:38:11Sandy Koufax ready again.
- 1:38:13Checks the two-two pitch.
- 1:38:15Strike three called on the outside corner, so Sandy keeps the string going.
- 1:38:19And now has nine strikeouts in five innings.
- 1:38:23For the Cubs, in the top of the fifth inning, no runs, no hits, no errors, and one man left on.
- 1:38:29So at the end of four and a half innings of play, the score, the Dodgers six, Chicago nothing.
- 1:38:38And now, friends, a word from Al Hofer.
- 1:38:41Well, some time or other we've all watched the third base coach flashing signs.
- 1:38:45Did you ever watch old Jerry Daggett here flashing his signs?
- 1:38:49Ah, he's got his hand held out.
- 1:38:51Calm up.
- 1:38:52Well, that means, uh, let's me luckies at home.
- 1:38:55Can a mooch want?
- 1:38:56A beaming smile?
- 1:38:57Uh-huh.
- 1:38:58Well, that's Jerry's sign that he's got his lucky and he's enjoying it right now.
- 1:39:03What else?
- 1:39:04Oh, no.
- 1:39:05A lucky is all fine tobacco.
- 1:39:08There couldn't be anything else.
- 1:39:09Naturally good tasting tobacco that's toasted to taste even better.
- 1:39:13Well, say, what's he signaling now?
- 1:39:16Oh, I got a Jerry.
- 1:39:17Let's all light up our lucky.
- 1:39:19That's a good idea.
- 1:39:21For the taste that you like, light up a lucky strike.
- 1:39:30You'll say a lucky is the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 1:39:35We're moving to the last half of inning number five at Ebbets Field.
- 1:39:51Gino Somoli will be the first lineup.
- 1:39:53Then comes Hodges and then comes Pignatano.
- 1:39:56You all set, Jerry?
- 1:39:57Ready to go, Al.
- 1:39:58That lucky pardon going, huh?
- 1:39:59Got it going.
- 1:40:00Hold it for a minute now.
- 1:40:01I got to put a match to it.
- 1:40:03Then we'll be ready to roll.
- 1:40:05Somoli has struck out and walked into score.
- 1:40:08Gino hitting at 3.43.
- 1:40:11On the mound, Big Jim Brosnan.
- 1:40:13Into the lineup and the pitch comes to Somoli.
- 1:40:17Gino checked up and took a low for a ball.
- 1:40:20One nothing.
- 1:40:26Now I'm ready.
- 1:40:28What are you going to do with the other one on the other side?
- 1:40:29You got two of them lit now.
- 1:40:31You can smoke them two at a time.
- 1:40:36Two, three, five, or six you can't improve on the flavor though, boy.
- 1:40:39They're all fine.
- 1:40:41the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 1:40:44Check it.
- 1:40:45Here's the little pitch to Gino.
- 1:40:47Again, he checks and it's a ball two.
- 1:40:49Curve outside.
- 1:40:50Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:40:54Dodger six, Cubs nothing.
- 1:40:56Bottom of the fifth.
- 1:40:58Somoli with a hot bat.
- 1:40:59432 average in his last 11 ball game.
- 1:41:02Here's the pitch.
- 1:41:04Top foul, back of the plate.
- 1:41:06Neiman turns and watches it sail in the upper deck and it's 2-1.
- 1:41:15Two balls, one strike to Gino Somoli batting in the cleanup spot.
- 1:41:28Drosman ready.
- 1:41:29Here's the pitch.
- 1:41:31Curve ball in high and on the letters, ball three.
- 1:41:34Three and one to Gino.
- 1:41:46Here's the pitch.
- 1:41:48Swing it to drive to left field.
- 1:41:49Backboard goes to left field to Spiek and makes the grab in front of the wall.
- 1:41:53Gino gave it a ride to left field but Spiek was there to make the play.
- 1:41:58Somoli line to left, one away.
- 1:42:01And on comes Hodges.
- 1:42:02Gill has walked and doubled, has scored twice.
- 1:42:24Drosman ready now.
- 1:42:25Pitches to Hodges.
- 1:42:26Fastball on the inside corner, strike one.
- 1:42:38Strike one count.
- 1:42:41the wind up for the pitch.
- 1:42:43Low for ball and the count goes one and one.
- 1:42:47Last of the first inning we have one out.
- 1:42:49Dodgers batting leading 6-0 over Chicago.
- 1:42:54First of a 15-game home stand.
- 1:43:04One ball, one strike.
- 1:43:06Here's the pitch.
- 1:43:08Fly ball to deep center field.
- 1:43:09Backboard goes well.
- 1:43:10Way back, back, back and forget it.
- 1:43:13That's a home run for Hodges.
- 1:43:32Gill Hodges hit one far and deep into the lower stands in left center field a long way away.
- 1:43:38And it's the seventh of the year and for the veterans at the VA Hospital Montrose, New York, another thousand free-luckies along with that home run.
- 1:43:48Here's Joe Pegna Turner up for his first at bat.
- 1:43:51Joe got in the ball game in the third and now I guess we can take a look at major league pitching.
- 1:43:56Last year at St. Paul Joe hit 295.
- 1:43:59Ball one to him. Swings on a curve and it's strike one, one and one.
- 1:44:08So far in our ball game tonight we've sent along 3,000 lucky to the veterans at Montrose Hospital.
- 1:44:15We have a quota of 34,000 and now I have received 29 of the 34,000 quota.
- 1:44:21Curve ball bites from the dirt and bounces away from Neiman and to Pegna-Tano it's ball two and strike one.
- 1:44:28the Dodgers seven and the Cubs nothing.
- 1:44:35Gill's been on a real binge here lately. Two homers, two doubles, two walks in his last six times to the plate.
- 1:44:41That's pretty good. Four for four and he's been on base six times.
- 1:44:46Joe takes a strike at the knees and it's two-two to Pegna-Tano.
- 1:44:59Turn to his brazen goes into the windup and here's his pitch.
- 1:45:02A swing and a drive to right field. Base hit for Pegna-Tano. One big bounce in front of Ornega.
- 1:45:08Joe is on, slamming one to right over the head of second baseman Bobby Morgan.
- 1:45:13And a nice round of applause for the Brooklyn catcher.
- 1:45:16Joe Pegna-Tano on with a single and here comes Charlie Neal.
- 1:45:20Charlie struck out and swung a little drive in a pair so he's one for two hitting it 274.
- 1:45:28the home run by Hodges was the first one allowed by Brosnan.
- 1:45:33In fact, was the first baserunner.
- 1:45:38Big Jim checks first. Pegna-Tano leads off and here's the pitch to Neal. Down low, ball one.
- 1:45:44We're in the bottom of the fifth inning. One out, one on. Dodger seven, Cubs nothing.
- 1:45:54Philadelphia three, Cincinnati nothing to six and a half.
- 1:46:00Fastball outside, ball two. Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:46:12Pegna-Tano on first.
- 1:46:16Charlie Neal waiting, down zipper on deck.
- 1:46:20In field, up a step or two, double play depth.
- 1:46:24Fastball low and it's ball free to Neal.
- 1:46:38Three-oh the count to Charlie Neal.
- 1:46:42Here's the look and the pitch.
- 1:46:44Ball four, hide inside, bends him back and Neal is on with a walk.
- 1:46:49Brosnan walk number one and off Chicago pitching the Dodgers have now received five free passes.
- 1:46:54Or rather six. Five off drop and one off Brosnan.
- 1:47:01Here's down, zipper up now. Called out on strikes and wrapped into a double play.
- 1:47:05Hitting 226.
- 1:47:09Pegna-Tano on second and Neal on it first.
- 1:47:13One out, here's the pitch.
- 1:47:16Curve ball low and away, ball one.
- 1:47:21Dodgers three on the first, three on the third and one now on the fifth with two on and one out.
- 1:47:29So the Dodgers have been using the odd ending tonight to get their runs.
- 1:47:34Brosnan ready, checks and delivers.
- 1:47:37Bow ball straight back and it's one and one to Zimmer.
- 1:47:42Sandy Koufax do up next with Sandy Ambrose comes out in the on-deck circle.
- 1:47:49At the end of six, the Giants five, Milwaukee four.
- 1:47:54End of six and a half, Philadelphia three and Cincinnati nothing.
- 1:48:05Here's the pitch to Zimmer.
- 1:48:07Hide outside, ball two, two and one.
- 1:48:10Heavy haddocks doing the work for Philadelphia.
- 1:48:15And hanging goose eggs on red legs up to now.
- 1:48:27Two one counts, Zimmer waiting, two on.
- 1:48:30Pegna-Tano and Neal at second and first.
- 1:48:32Brosnan delivers, Zimmer swings a high pop fly in the center field.
- 1:48:35Coming on forward as Walls and cutting in from right as Ornega.
- 1:48:38Walls calls and almost overran the ball, stops and lean back to make the grab.
- 1:48:44Zimmer out on a pop fly in the center field.
- 1:48:49Two away now, Sandy Koufax goes to the bat rack to get a helmet and a bat.
- 1:48:56And up he comes.
- 1:48:59Nice hand for Sandy who threw five innings as a lot.
- 1:49:02No runs and no hits to Chicago.
- 1:49:04Sandy's a free base runner while striking out nine.
- 1:49:09Sandy having quite an evening so far.
- 1:49:20Koufax swings left.
- 1:49:23Waiting now for Brosnan to get set.
- 1:49:25Two on, two out.
- 1:49:27Here's the pitch.
- 1:49:28Bow ball straight back, strike one.
- 1:49:31God give Sandy a cheer as he got a piece of the ball.
- 1:49:35Sandy is 0 for 12.
- 1:49:36Tonight he has struck out twice and I think that he's struck out now 10 out of 12 times.
- 1:49:41Is that about right, Allen? 8 out of 12.
- 1:49:49Here's the pitch.
- 1:49:51Curve ball in tight and it's ball one.
- 1:49:53One and one to Koufax.
- 1:49:55Dodger seven, Cubs nothing, last of the fifth inning.
- 1:49:59Last two on.
- 1:50:08Jim Brosnan, the second Chicago hurler, replaced Vic Drop in the third.
- 1:50:17the one-one pitch.
- 1:50:19A liner hit right to the second base for Morgan who makes the grab.
- 1:50:22And here's what happened on the play.
- 1:50:23Morgan had come over to block the runner, Pignatino.
- 1:50:26And he was going back as Brosnan pitched.
- 1:50:29Had he not been over there, the ball would have gone through the middle for a base hit for Koufax.
- 1:50:33So Sandy can say that he was robbed.
- 1:50:36If it's value you want, then it's value you'll get when you trade at Rose Oldsmobile.
- 1:50:43Take a tip from a friend that you'll never regret.
- 1:50:47If you're looking for a really good used car, Rose Oldsmobile, the capital district's oldest franchise Oldsmobile dealer, is the place to go.
- 1:50:54If you've ever purchased any car anywhere, then you know there's more to buying a car than just price.
- 1:50:59You want to be sure the deal you make is the best deal for you.
- 1:51:02And you want to be sure the dealer stands behind it.
- 1:51:04You can be sure when you deal with Rose Oldsmobile at the corner of Central and Manning and Albany.
- 1:51:09Rose Oldsmobile sells the best late model used cars, good reliable used cars traded on brand new Oldsmobiles.
- 1:51:16And these late model beauties are price right.
- 1:51:19So when you think of value in used cars, think of price.
- 1:51:22Think of the deal you can make, think of the firm's reputation.
- 1:51:25When you think of value in these terms, you're sure to think of Rose Oldsmobile, corner of Central and Manning and Albany.
- 1:51:31You'll never, never, never, never get better value.
- 1:51:43And for the next four purchasers of the yearbook, the same gift, a pair of box seats.
- 1:51:49That's ten box seats in all waiting for five lucky purchasers of the Dodger yearbook.
- 1:51:55That Dodger yearbook, box 119, Brooklyn 1, New York.
- 1:51:59Maybe you'll be the recipient of a pair of box seats.
- 1:52:02Order your book right away.
- 1:52:05In the sixth inning we go, Jerry. That's Morgan up there. How about it?
- 1:52:16Ready to go. Sandy Koufax into the windup and here's his pitch.
- 1:52:20Fastball for a strike in at the knees and it's nothing in the one.
- 1:52:24Koufax with nine strikeouts has walked free and allowed no runs and no hits to the cup.
- 1:52:29Top of the sixth inning, Bobby Morgan, the leadoff man, takes the curveball inside and it's ball one.
- 1:52:36Even count now, one and one.
- 1:52:40Joe Pignatano behind the plate, down to give a sign.
- 1:52:42Charlie Neal edging in at third, just in case Morgan should think about bunting.
- 1:52:47the one-one pitch. Bouncer foul past third and off the box seat running.
- 1:52:53the man fell out of the fence going after that one.
- 1:52:59One ball, two strikes on Bobby Morgan.
- 1:53:03He fell out of the fence to get the ball and the park policeman came down to retrieve it.
- 1:53:08You can't come on the field to get it. You've got to stay in the fence.
- 1:53:12When you fall out of there, that's too bad.
- 1:53:15Of course, that draws around the booze.
- 1:53:18the one-two pitch by Koufax. Bowel ball right straight back and it's still one and two.
- 1:53:25Andy Koufax leading the league in strikeouts.
- 1:53:30Really blazing them in. Nine and five innings so far tonight.
- 1:53:37At the end of seven, the Phillies three, Cincinnati nothing.
- 1:53:43Milwaukee tied it up on the Giants with one of the seven, five, five, top of the seven.
- 1:53:48Curve ball just missed inside and it's ball two.
- 1:53:52Two and two to Morgan. Speak is on deck with Ernie Banks down in the hole.
- 1:54:08Pitch is low for a ball and the count goes three and two now. Full count to Bobby Morgan.
- 1:54:21Three and two.
- 1:54:24In the fifth inning, Koufax walked the first batter long but then got the side out and long died at first.
- 1:54:31Three-two pitch on the way.
- 1:54:34Ball four, low and inside he walked him. Koufax walked number four.
- 1:54:40Again, leadoff man is on and Bob Speak comes on. He walked him flat out in two tries, none for one.
- 1:55:06First pitch comes down to Speak low for a ball and it's one nothing.
- 1:55:13Dodger seven, Cubs nothing. We're in the sixth inning.
- 1:55:20Sandy Koufax, Texas runner, Texas sign now and goes out of a stretch.
- 1:55:24Delivers to Speak. Strike called with a curve on the corner and it's one and one.
- 1:55:30Brooklyn got three in the first, three in the third and one in the fifth.
- 1:55:38Charlie Neal playing it in the third with a left-hand batter up there.
- 1:55:42Zimmer and Gilliam halfway and double play it up.
- 1:55:45Hodges holding the runner on, now backs off. Here's the pitch.
- 1:55:49Pop up around the plate foul. Back forward comes Pignatino.
- 1:55:52Back to the wire but it's up in the screen out of play.
- 1:55:57So it's a ball and two strike count now to Bob Speak.
- 1:56:01Joe Pignatino in the ball game. Campanella plunked him a chest by pitch by Dick Drought in the third.
- 1:56:07Had to leave the ball game. Rube Walker has a couple of stitches in his right hand.
- 1:56:11So Pignatino gets into his first major league ball game here tonight.
- 1:56:15the Brooklyn boy handling the slant of Sandy Koufax.
- 1:56:19Giving the Dodgers an all Brooklyn battery for the first time in I guess a long time.
- 1:56:25Here's the one-two pitch. Curve up high for ball two. Two on two.
- 1:56:34Actually the second game that Joe's been in but the first game that he's caught he was in as a pinch runner earlier.
- 1:56:44To Koufax. Sighs Morgan at first base now delivers to the plate.
- 1:56:48Ball three the fastball just inside. So again a full count here on Bob Speak.
- 1:56:55Koufax working away. He's walked four and struck out nine.
- 1:56:59Now Pignatino goes out to have a talk.
- 1:57:05Joe is rated a very capable receiver.
- 1:57:07And last year he had a good batting average at St. Paul in 81 games. He hit 295.
- 1:57:13His peak year was in 1953 at Asheville, North Carolina. He hit 316.
- 1:57:26Three and two. Sandy Koufax out of a stretch. Here's the pitch for Speak.
- 1:57:31A drive to right field. That one's tagged. That one is well hit.
- 1:57:35And over the wall a home run for Bob Speak.
- 1:57:38And two runs score for Chicago in the first hit of the ball game off Sandy Koufax.
- 1:57:45As Bob Speak hit a low fastball on the 3-2 pitch and gave it a golf shot over the screen and right field out into Vetford Avenue.
- 1:57:55So the Cubs pick up a pair and down the drain goes the no hitter and also the shutout.
- 1:58:00Two runs on one hit for Chicago. A home run for Bob Speak.
- 1:58:07Ernie Banks coming on takes low for a ball.
- 1:58:10Nobody out. Two in. And it's a 7-2 ball game.
- 1:58:13And for the home run Bob Speak sends along a thousand free-luckies to the veterans at Montrose Hospital.
- 1:58:19Montrose New York.
- 1:58:21One ball no strikes.
- 1:58:30the curve ball to Banks is inside. Ball two.
- 1:58:34Sandy was rolling along with pretty good control. He had a walk in the first.
- 1:58:39In the fourth. the fifth and now in the sixth. But he got behind.
- 1:58:43Had to come in with one to Speak on a full count.
- 1:58:46Here's a strike to Banks and it's two and one.
- 1:58:52Ernie Banks at bat has struck out twice.
- 1:58:56Koufax checks the sign from Pigna Tunnel.
- 1:59:00the 2-1 pitch.
- 1:59:02High fly to center field. Snyder drifting in. Weights, pounds, his glove comes on in and he's got it for the outs. One away.
- 1:59:12So Banks out on a fly ball to center and here's Lee Walls.
- 1:59:17Walls has popped out and walks. Speak and Walls are the only batters that have not gone down swinging before Koufax tonight.
- 1:59:27Sandy has picked up two on Ernie Banks and Frank Ornega.
- 1:59:32One on all the others except Speak and Walls.
- 1:59:35One out and on. Here's his pitch.
- 1:59:38Pass ball is outside. Ball one.
- 1:59:41Walls hitting a 2-24.
- 1:59:46Walls and Long of course came to the Cubs and the deal has sent Baker and Pondy to Pittsburgh.
- 1:59:55And right now it appears that the Pirates got the better of it.
- 1:59:58Especially since Dee Pondy is leading the league in batting.
- 2:00:02With a 3-67 average.
- 2:00:05Long is hitting 2-41 and Walls hitting 2-24.
- 2:00:11Here's the pitch.
- 2:00:13Pass ball is in for the strike and it's 1-1.
- 2:00:18Oddly enough although the Pirates are last in the league they have three among the top ten hitters. Pondy, Groat and Thomas.
- 2:00:271-1 pitch. High and inside. Ball two. Koufax with the curve ball. Lost control of it.
- 2:00:35Two balls, one strike. Sixth inning. the Cubs have two in and it's 7-2 Dodgers lead.
- 2:00:46Neal playing shallow a third against Walls who might bunt.
- 2:00:50Down ball to the left side Zimmer goes over towards second. Plays it across. End time for the out two away.
- 2:00:57And up to this point with two out in the sixth inning Koufax has chalked up at least one strike out for an inning.
- 2:01:03Now he comes again to an inning with two outs.
- 2:01:06He's needing to get one to keep the string alive.
- 2:01:09the play by Zimmer is the first assist of the ball game. All of the other foot outs, fly balls or strike outs.
- 2:01:20First assist.
- 2:01:23There's a fast ball for a strike so we go along for five and two thirds innings before we get the first ground ball actually.
- 2:01:31First assist.
- 2:01:33Two outs. Strike one count on Frank Ronega who has struck out twice.
- 2:01:38Curve is low for ball and the count is 1-1.
- 2:01:44Two outs, none on. In the inning Morgan walked and speak at a line drive over the screen and right for a home run.
- 2:01:51Lucky strike sending it all to you tonight from Ebbets Field.
- 2:01:55Fast ball outside, ball two. Two and one now to Ronega.
- 2:02:00Frank hitting three ten came into tonight's game at three fifty three but he's only been up for a six time, seventeen times with six hits.
- 2:02:09Now it's six for nineteen.
- 2:02:11And looks at a fast ball low again ball three.
- 2:02:15So it's three one to Frank Ronega.
- 2:02:18Coffax into the windup and here's his pitch. Strike two on the outside corner it's three and two.
- 2:02:34Big Natano passes it out and Coffax winds it five. Strike three down he goes and that's number ten for Sandy Coffax and he still has one at least one innings.
- 2:02:54the third time for Ronega to slide out in the sixth.
- 2:02:57For the Cubs two runs, one hit, no errors and they left none on.
- 2:03:02So at the end of the top of the sixth inning the score the Dodgers seven Chicago two.
- 2:03:07Al you ready? Yes sir.
- 2:03:10Now for a quick trip to the captain's corner. Captain Peewee you're up.
- 2:03:15So far this season the one thing which has impressed me mostly is the balance of the league.
- 2:03:20All the clubs are tough now.
- 2:03:22Several years ago we never had too much trouble with Pittsburgh, Philadelphia or Chicago.
- 2:03:27Now every team in the league seems to play like penitent contenders against us.
- 2:03:31the Giants may not be high in the standings but when they play us they really get up for the games.
- 2:03:36I would say the National League this season is the best balance I've ever seen it.
- 2:03:40It should make for great fan appeal.
- 2:03:43Well spoken Captain Reese. Got a suggestion for you before we focus back on the game.
- 2:03:49Fans light up a lucky and enjoy the genuine pleasure of a genuine cigarette.
- 2:03:54You'll say a lucky is the best tasting cigarette you ever smoked.
- 2:04:02Now to the last half of inning number six.
- 2:04:07First man up will be Sandy Amoros and we'll have Gilliam and Snyder.
- 2:04:11Now have a 7 to 2 ball game in favor of the Brooklyn Dodgers.
- 2:04:14Sandy Koufax despite the fact he's given up two runs is still breathing.
- 2:04:18Going right along you're firing that fastball. He's stuffing it in is he Jerry?
- 2:04:21He's really pointed out 10 strikeouts in the ball game through six innings.
- 2:04:26Amoros waits none for two tonight.
- 2:04:29Brosnan delivers a high curve ball one.
- 2:04:32Sandy hitting a 3 0 8 came into the night's game at 3 20.
- 2:04:36Popped out walked and grounded out.
- 2:04:40the Dodgers have six base hits good for seven runs.
- 2:04:42the Cubs have one hit good for two runs.
- 2:04:46A curve is in for a strike and it's 1 1 to Amoros.
- 2:05:031 1 to wind up and pitch.
- 2:05:06Curve ball bellied in the center field.
- 2:05:08Walls now turns and drips back forward back back back near the track.
- 2:05:12He's got it for the out.
- 2:05:14Amoros skying deep to center for the first out of the inning.
- 2:05:18One up one down and here's Gilliam.
- 2:05:20Junior has walked grounded out twice.
- 2:05:23Gilliam hitting a 2 49 none for two tonight.
- 2:05:30Dodgers 7 Cubs 2 last of the sixth inning.
- 2:05:40Brosnan delivers Gilliam swings and hits one in the hole to left field for a base hit.
- 2:05:45Junior slicing one through there between the shortstop Latella and third base with Ernie Banks.
- 2:05:51So he's on with a single hit number seven for the Dodgers and oncoming will be Duke Snyder.
- 2:05:56And as soon as we see what happens to Snyder we'll run him a patient break for you.
- 2:06:01One on one out Snyder has walked in a long run and struck out.
- 2:06:06He's got two forty eight one for two tonight.
- 2:06:11He's picked up three points this evening with a home run scored two runs.
- 2:06:16One on one out.
- 2:06:18Brosnan the big right hander second Chicago pitcher of the night.
- 2:06:22Here's the pitch fastball for strike at the knees Snyder nothing in one.
- 2:06:31He's got some only on deck and Gil Hodges down on the hole.
- 2:06:41Strike one count Duke waiting.
- 2:06:43Gilliam off first.
- 2:06:44Here's the pitch.
- 2:06:46Ball ripped straight back and it's strike two to do.
- 2:07:06Nothing into count to Snyder.
- 2:07:10Gilliam off first one out Brosnan out of a stretch delivers to do curve in the dirt.
- 2:07:14He's got a little bit of a bounce by Neiman down the second go Gilliam makes a big turn there and now goes the third.
- 2:07:21the thought of bank.
- 2:07:23Then time Gilliam out trying to go to third on a wild pitch.
- 2:07:27the ball came back to the backstop and Neiman had a little trouble grabbing it finally picked it up and fired the banks for the.
- 2:07:34So if you're scoring it'll be going the second on the wild pitch and not going to third to the five.
- 2:07:41Snyder ball one and two strikes.
- 2:07:45Gilliam out Jim has a better just a moment before deciding to go on and that's the second coffee out of third is even with a perfect big down the bank.
- 2:07:58So to us now.
- 2:08:00No base runner Snyder waiting ball one strike two.
- 2:08:10Wind up in the one to pitch curve outside for ball and the count to do now on Snyder.
- 2:08:33Dodger seven comes to last of the fact.
- 2:08:39the wind up in pitch fastball high outside ball free tomorrow night at Jersey City it'll be done Drysdale for the Dodgers against Don Kaiser for the Cubs.
- 2:08:51Don Newcomb do the pitch back at Evans Field on Thursday against Chicago.

- 2:13:51first three in the second one in
- 2:13:53the third two in the fourth one
- 2:13:54in the fifth and one in the
- 2:13:55sixth long swings a high pop
- 2:13:59fly around the plate take the
- 2:14:01title off of the back moves back
- 2:14:02about four steps late.
- 2:14:04He's got it.
- 2:14:05He's got it on the way long
- 2:14:07fouls out straight up in the air
- 2:14:09to Joe Pignatano foul ball to
- 2:14:18pick the title right.
- 2:14:20No about four steps back in the
- 2:14:21play so one away and here's
- 2:14:23Carol Eamon coming on struck out
- 2:14:25and flat out even none for two
- 2:14:28and sixty three Koufax into the
- 2:14:38wind up and here's his pitch
- 2:14:40fastball for strike on the
- 2:14:41outside corner on one one down
- 2:14:46in the seventh inning and the
- 2:14:50Cubs have bullpen activity again
- 2:14:52here in the top of the seven swing
- 2:15:00and a vest on a good curve ball
- 2:15:02in the waters and it's strike
- 2:15:03two on two on Carol Eamon
- 2:15:14Poufax lines and fires curve at
- 2:15:18the knees for a ball and it's
- 2:15:19strike two on ball two strikes
- 2:15:31wind up and pitch strike three
- 2:15:34called at the outside corner
- 2:15:36strike out number 11 for
- 2:15:37Koufax and for Carol Eamon
- 2:15:40that's twice on the year and
- 2:15:46that's fifty eight strikeouts

- 2:16:16ball to Tom Paolski busy in the
- 2:16:21bullpen for Chicago.
- 2:16:23Brosnan is due up next.
- 2:16:26So Littrell gets on we're after
- 2:16:28see a pinch batter for the Cubs
- 2:16:30one one count to Littrell
- 2:16:36Koufax lines and fires strike
- 2:16:39called and it's one and two
- 2:16:40Littrell taking a curve ball at

- 2:16:46Cubs to top of the seven.
- 2:16:52Here's the pitch a bouncer hit
- 2:16:54the third Neil backs up near the
- 2:16:56line long throw is in time for
- 2:16:58the out to retire the side.
- 2:17:01So it's three up and three down
- 2:17:02for Chicago in the seventh no
- 2:17:04run no hits no errors and none
- 2:17:06left on the end of six and a
- 2:17:09half. So what's happening to
- 2:17:11play the score the Dodger seven
- 2:17:13the Cubs to allow everybody
- 2:17:17standing up for the seven
- 2:17:18minute stretch.
- 2:17:19What do you got to say.
- 2:17:20All right.
- 2:17:21Got this to say it's been quite
- 2:17:22a game.
- 2:17:23Now here comes the seven
- 2:17:25inning stretch wonder what that
- 2:17:27Dodger fan down there is
- 2:17:28thinking about Jare.
- 2:17:30Let's steal a little time.
- 2:17:32Time again.
- 2:17:34Seven inning.
- 2:17:35It's a nice time to play a game
- 2:17:37and stretch and kind of look
- 2:17:41around the ballpark.
- 2:17:43If you things haven't noticed
- 2:17:44during the first part of the
- 2:17:45game sure tell the home fans
- 2:17:48from the visitors spot the
- 2:17:50lucky fans to no wonder they
- 2:17:52call it the lucky seven lot of
- 2:17:55lucky smokers can't think of a
- 2:17:57better light up time.
- 2:18:03Boy that tastes good.
- 2:18:05Light up a lucky yourself.
- 2:18:06You know they say they say
- 2:18:08luckies taste better.
- 2:18:10Tell you what you'll say.
- 2:18:12You'll say it's the best
- 2:18:13tasting cigarette you ever
- 2:18:15smoked.
- 2:18:29Well the greatest good things
- 2:18:31as the brightest of the little
- 2:18:32hand clapping music.
- 2:18:33Let's take a look up the score
- 2:18:34board and see how things stand
- 2:18:36for Brooklyn seven run seven
- 2:18:38hits no errors and for Chicago
- 2:18:39two runs one hit that committed
- 2:18:41one error.
- 2:18:42We go to the last of the seventh
- 2:18:43inning.
- 2:18:44It's Hodges coming up to the
- 2:18:45plate now and stepping right
- 2:18:47back up.
- 2:18:48Lucky strike.
- 2:18:49Gary Doug.
- 2:18:50OK.
- 2:18:51I just had a real good night so
- 2:18:52far.
- 2:18:53Walked double to the home run.
- 2:18:55Gills average has moved from
- 2:18:56three forty four to three fifty
- 2:18:58two and he's been on base six
- 2:19:00times in a row to double two
- 2:19:01home runs and two walks takes a
- 2:19:03curve on the inside corner for
- 2:19:05a strike at the end of a
- 2:19:07Philadelphia three Cincinnati
- 2:19:08one and at the end of seven the
- 2:19:12Giants six Milwaukee five one
- 2:19:17count here's the pitch by
- 2:19:18Brosnan curve low and it's ball
- 2:19:21one one ball one strike to
- 2:19:26Hodges Jim Brosnan Texas sign
- 2:19:38here's the one one offering
- 2:19:41outside ball to turn one Roger
- 2:19:44Craig and Don Bessam now in the
- 2:19:46bullpen for the Dodgers just in
- 2:19:47case.
- 2:19:49Colfax has struck out eleven
- 2:19:53and the Cubs will have two more
- 2:19:54turns at bat to one pitch to
- 2:19:59Gil a half swing and Gil
- 2:20:02couldn't check it in time.
- 2:20:03Strike two to two ball in the
- 2:20:07strike zone anyway so it's a
- 2:20:09two to count the high just all
- 2:20:23the national league races
- 2:20:24really something in it.
- 2:20:26Real dog fight.
- 2:20:28I just swing the ground ball to
- 2:20:29the left side shortstop a trail
- 2:20:30over up with it played a first
- 2:20:32in time and it's one gone.
- 2:20:34So they finally stop Hodges
- 2:20:36after getting on six times Gil
- 2:20:38Brown's out.
- 2:20:39He'll take the title coming on
- 2:20:41now batting one thousand if you
- 2:20:43play one for one one out not on
- 2:20:52the ground.
- 2:20:53He's got a good one.
- 2:20:54Seven winning.
- 2:20:56Look for a sign and winds and
- 2:20:58fire to Joe half swing check up
- 2:21:01and it's ball one one ball no
- 2:21:03strikes to pick the tunnel.

- 2:21:08number to follow last with the
- 2:21:10seventh inning Dodgers seven
- 2:21:11the Cubs to Roslyn ready the one
- 2:21:18old pitch to Joe curve high for
- 2:21:20ball two in case you joined us
- 2:21:22in the first inning.
- 2:21:23Joe's got a good one.
- 2:21:24He got flunked on the chest by
- 2:21:26a pitch ball in the third and
- 2:21:29with a score six nothing big
- 2:21:30Natano got the catching
- 2:21:32assignment this place since
- 2:21:33Rube Walker has a couple of
- 2:21:35stitches in his right hand.
- 2:21:38Actually Joe the only able body
- 2:21:39catcher gets a big league look
- 2:21:41and it looks very good.
- 2:21:43Makes a strike and it's two one
- 2:21:45but Joe's been riding that bench
- 2:21:47to send.
- 2:21:48Wait like get in there.
- 2:21:48Wait like get in there.
- 2:21:49And here he is.
- 2:21:50Joe the first catching role in
- 2:21:52the major leagues been in one
- 2:21:53ball game previous as a pitch
- 2:21:55runner.
- 2:21:55the two one pitch to Joe strike
- 2:21:57to he takes a fastball and it's
- 2:21:59two to one out.
- 2:22:02Not on Dodgers batting in the
- 2:22:03seventh leading seven to two one
- 2:22:05hit allowed by Sandy Koufax
- 2:22:08Dodgers have picked up seven
- 2:22:15to pitch on the way swing of the
- 2:22:18strike goes big Natano strikeout
- 2:22:21number three for Jim Brosnan
- 2:22:27that's 18 strikeouts in the game
- 2:22:33and here's Charlie Neil struck
- 2:22:35out single drive in a pair and
- 2:22:37walk one for two tonight Neil
- 2:22:38hitting two seventy four
- 2:22:40and a half.
- 2:22:48Brosnan takes a lot of time
- 2:22:50between pitches now Neil waits.
- 2:22:53Here's the pitch ground ball to
- 2:22:55the right side Morgan scoops over
- 2:22:57on the outfield grass makes his
- 2:22:58play just in time to get the
- 2:23:00flying heel by.
- 2:23:01I like to play at first.
- 2:23:03I'd retire but I just go out of
- 2:23:06order.
- 2:23:07No runs no hits no errors and
- 2:23:09then the end of seven things to

- 2:25:22and got it over.
- 2:25:27Kirkland joined Tom Pajolski in

- 2:25:56the Phillies red hot three

- 2:27:41There goes the runner at Colfax
- 2:27:42winds and there's no play made
- 2:27:45Sandy kind of kicks with the
- 2:27:46ball rolling into a windup with
- 2:27:48the runner on and Morgan just

- 2:28:22Speaker left hand batter has not
- 2:28:24felt the strikeout sting of
- 2:28:26Colfax yet.
- 2:28:27He's actually built it a home

- 2:29:31Dodger both and then he shakes
- 2:29:34it off again and now we're going
- 2:29:35to have a conference Colfax and
- 2:29:38the Dodgers and they might have
- 2:29:42a switch that on with a runner
- 2:29:43on its second base and Sandy
- 2:29:45wants to make sure he doesn't
- 2:29:46cross him up.
- 2:29:54One Bob speak waiting left hand
- 2:29:57batter Colfax peers down to get
- 2:29:59it now.
- 2:30:00OK.
- 2:30:02Out of a stretch delivers.
- 2:30:04Hi.
- 2:30:05I was headed speak is on with a
- 2:30:07little bit of a walk given up by
- 2:30:08Colfax and speak is on two of
- 2:30:11them Ernie Banks comes on now
- 2:30:16has struck out twice and fly to
- 2:30:17center so banks nothing but
- 2:30:20three hitting to 26 to on for
- 2:30:27the Cubs in the eighth inning
- 2:30:30one out Dodger in field double
- 2:30:33played up Dodgers lead seven to
- 2:30:34two top of the eighth Colfax
- 2:30:36and the Dodgers lead.
- 2:30:37the Cubs are in the first
- 2:30:39inning and the stretch delivers
- 2:30:41long five ball and there it goes
- 2:30:43deep to left field.
- 2:30:44This one is going to a home run
- 2:30:47for any bank well before you
- 2:30:56know it the Cubs are right back
- 2:30:57in the ballgame.
- 2:30:58Now is there any banks at the
- 2:30:59free run home with seven to five
- 2:31:01Dodgers lead as banks voted one
- 2:31:04out for his sixth home run of the
- 2:31:06year and for another thousand
- 2:31:08lucky to the hospital at Montrose
- 2:31:10New York and here comes all
- 2:31:11lost not to have a talk with
- 2:31:13Colfax the Cubs have picked up
- 2:31:17three hits in the game to have
- 2:31:19been home run down they have
- 2:31:20accounted for the fire at
- 2:31:21Chicago Talley Hodges and Colfax
- 2:31:24the man now waiting for Austin
- 2:31:26to come on as Ernie Banks hit
- 2:31:29one of the stands and it's seven
- 2:31:31to one for the Cubs and the
- 2:31:34Cubs are in the second inning
- 2:31:35of the game for the Cubs in
- 2:31:37Brooklyn.
- 2:31:40Lambele buying now replaces
- 2:31:42Roger Craig in the Dodger bullpen
- 2:31:43and destroying along with Don
- 2:31:45Betham and the conference of the
- 2:31:48man and Austin wants to find out
- 2:31:50about it.
- 2:31:52And he called back started the
- 2:31:54game with the Cubs and the
- 2:32:01Cubs are going to play their
- 2:32:03Kindle and he's going to stay in
- 2:32:07awesome coming on off after
- 2:32:09Kendall struck out Morgan stroke
- 2:32:11the swing on the right field
- 2:32:13stole second as Colfax went into
- 2:32:15a wind up speak and draw a walk
- 2:32:17and banks powdered one for a
- 2:32:19home run.
- 2:32:20Here's Lee Walls up now he has
- 2:32:22struck out the Cubs and the
- 2:32:24Cubs are going to be the only
- 2:32:26Cubs who have not gone down on
- 2:32:27strike.
- 2:32:29Here's the pitch a liner hit
- 2:32:31right to the left for the line
- 2:32:33drive to Don and it's still a
- 2:32:35way little Don just kind of
- 2:32:38brought it down and made the
- 2:32:39catch.
- 2:32:41So to a way now as Frank
- 2:32:43said three times seven five
- 2:32:53Dodgers lead top of the eight
- 2:32:55Cubs batting two outs none on
- 2:32:58lucky strike sending it to you
- 2:32:59from Ebbets Field is a looker
- 2:33:01hit the right center field for a
- 2:33:02base that this is going to be
- 2:33:04in for extra bases going to the
- 2:33:05wall and I go around first dig
- 2:33:07the second now fighter plays the
- 2:33:08ball in the corner or they get
- 2:33:10turned and stopped the second
- 2:33:11time a double the right center
- 2:33:13field and the Cubs now stand up
- 2:33:16they along with a tying run.
- 2:33:18How about that.
- 2:33:20I just had a big lead of seven
- 2:33:22nothing and the Cubs now have
- 2:33:24come romping back to get in the
- 2:33:25ball game and go back has been
- 2:33:28pitching bring it Lee but the
- 2:33:29home run ball has gotten him in
- 2:33:30trouble.
- 2:33:31That's just the fourth hit for
- 2:33:33Chicago to home runs a single
- 2:33:36and a double and here comes
- 2:33:37off and again that may be all
- 2:33:39for.
- 2:33:39the Cubs are going to be in the
- 2:33:40second half of the game for
- 2:33:42Colfax even though they along
- 2:33:45the left hand batter is due up
- 2:33:46next.
- 2:33:47Wait and see all from coming
- 2:33:49back to the mound to have a
- 2:33:50talk.
- 2:33:52For Chicago to right handers
- 2:33:53Turk Lown and Tom for home he
- 2:33:56working off from now talking
- 2:33:59with Bigg Natano as they both
- 2:34:01walk to the mound the Colfax
- 2:34:03or negative belt of a double the
- 2:34:05right hander and the after
- 2:34:09achieving his 12 strikeout to
- 2:34:11start this thing has been
- 2:34:14hammered around here rather
- 2:34:15thoroughly by the Cubs the line
- 2:34:16single the right a walk along
- 2:34:19home run to left a line out the
- 2:34:21shortstop and a double the right
- 2:34:23center field and he's going to
- 2:34:24leave the ball game and from
- 2:34:25the line will come on so call
- 2:34:30back after a rather brilliant
- 2:34:32performance tonight balls off
- 2:34:34the line and the range on him
- 2:34:36and pick up three runs and
- 2:34:37bring the tying run to bat with
- 2:34:39two outs one on they along do up
- 2:34:41to face the oncoming from the
- 2:34:43line from the bullpen for the
- 2:34:44Dodgers.
- 2:34:46Well our plan makes the long
- 2:34:47walk in here and get this one
- 2:34:50up tosses down to Joe Bigg Natano
- 2:34:53let's turn over to Al and get a
- 2:34:55run down on the lucky strike
- 2:34:56scoreboard out.
- 2:34:57All right Jerry checking up on
- 2:34:58that Milwaukee New York ball
- 2:34:59game.
- 2:35:00It's quite a tussle at the end
- 2:35:01of eight innings it's all tied
- 2:35:02up in six six and six between
- 2:35:05Milwaukee the Giants at the end
- 2:35:06of eight.
- 2:35:09A round of applause for Sandy
- 2:35:10Colfax as he leaves the mound
- 2:35:12and the bank and ball.
- 2:35:16Coming up in the right defeated
- 2:35:17Cincinnati three to one St.
- 2:35:21Louis and Pittsburgh at the end
- 2:35:22of six innings at St. Louis for
- 2:35:26Pittsburgh three the Yankees in
- 2:35:28Cleveland in the American League
- 2:35:29at the end of seven innings.
- 2:35:30the Yankees are in the game.
- 2:35:33It is the Yankees six and
- 2:35:35Cleveland has Boston and Chicago
- 2:35:38at the end of five and a half
- 2:35:39innings no score.
- 2:35:41Boston Chicago scoreless in the
- 2:35:43five and a half.
- 2:35:44Washington and Detroit at the
- 2:35:46end of two and a half innings
- 2:35:47Washington leading Detroit two
- 2:35:49to one Baltimore and Kansas City
- 2:35:52at the end of half an inning.
- 2:35:53Baltimore nothing Kansas City
- 2:35:55now coming about.
- 2:35:58Well that's everything off the
- 2:35:59top of the list.
- 2:36:01I think Jerry has the bonds
- 2:36:03record all checked up for us as
- 2:36:05one takes the mound.
- 2:36:06He'll be pitching to date along
- 2:36:08here in the eighth inning in
- 2:36:10which the Chicago Cubs as Jerry
- 2:36:12told you to get back in the ball
- 2:36:13game of scored three times and
- 2:36:16our naggers double with two outs
- 2:36:19placed him in second base and
- 2:36:20day long is always trouble.
- 2:36:22So Jerry how about.
- 2:36:23OK.
- 2:36:24Long the struck out and foul
- 2:36:25out and the buying now comes in
- 2:36:27with a three and a half run this
- 2:36:29year.
- 2:36:29Clem's record is three and only
- 2:36:30a save.
- 2:36:32I'm trying to play a little
- 2:36:33for Colfax.
- 2:36:35Here's the stretch.
- 2:36:36the look on the pitch curve on
- 2:36:38outside ball one Roger Craig now
- 2:36:40working alone in the bullpen for
- 2:36:41the Dodgers the Biden has worked
- 2:36:44forty one and two third innings
- 2:36:46and has allowed just eight run
- 2:36:47runs winning three losing none
- 2:36:51struck out twenty five and walk
- 2:36:54nine one all count the left hand
- 2:36:57and the right hand.
- 2:36:58the left hand is the best one on
- 2:37:00the pitch curve for a strike and
- 2:37:02it's one and one.
- 2:37:04Go back for seven and two third
- 2:37:06inning allowed five runs just
- 2:37:08four hits struck out twelve and
- 2:37:10walked five.
- 2:37:12Sandy with a fine performance
- 2:37:14weakened a bit in the eight and
- 2:37:15the Cubs got three runs on any
- 2:37:16bank homer with two aboard the
- 2:37:19double by our Nega then brought
- 2:37:21off and out for the second time
- 2:37:22and LeBine in the pitch the one
- 2:37:25one pitched along ground ball
- 2:37:26nine and the crowd is retired
- 2:37:29as hard as carried the ball to
- 2:37:30the bag for the out in time on
- 2:37:33long.
- 2:37:33So that's all in the eighth
- 2:37:34inning.
- 2:37:35LeBine comes in and makes three
- 2:37:37pitches and gets the side out
- 2:37:38for Chicago.
- 2:37:40Three runs on three hits no
- 2:37:43errors and they left one.
- 2:37:45So at the end of the top of the
- 2:37:46eighth score the Dodgers seven
- 2:37:49to cargo fire.
- 2:37:51Now.
- 2:37:53Well fans would you like to take
- 2:37:54a guess at the time here in
- 2:37:55Brooklyn. Let's see how close you
- 2:37:57can get.
- 2:38:00Well if you said it's about 1030

- 2:38:42inning on this lucky strike
- 2:38:43broadcast on Zimmer will be the
- 2:38:45first man up for the Brooklyn
- 2:38:46Dodgers.
- 2:38:47Then LeBine is due and then

- 2:39:00this is his tenth appearance.
- 2:39:01He started five and he's warming
- 2:39:06up now with the catcher Cal
- 2:39:08Neiman as Tom Zimmer stands by
- 2:39:11waiting to start it off here in
- 2:39:12the last of the eighth inning
- 2:39:15Dodger seven Cubs five last of
- 2:39:17the eighth and the Cubs use the
- 2:39:20home run ball to get right back
- 2:39:22in the contest.
- 2:39:23A two run homer by Bob speak in
- 2:39:25the sixth inning and the free
- 2:39:26run homer by Ernie Banks in the
- 2:39:28eighth.
- 2:39:30We've had four home runs but
- 2:39:31I just said a pair of Snyder and
- 2:39:33Hodges and for the Cubs speak
- 2:39:35and banks we've had one double

- 2:39:47thirty four thousand.
- 2:39:48We're still going along.
- 2:39:53Don Zimmer steps in now a little
- 2:39:54guy on has struck out at the
- 2:39:56double play and flat out.
- 2:39:58So he's nothing for three and
- 2:39:59hitting the two twenty five.
- 2:40:02Tom Pajolski big right hander
- 2:40:03formerly with the cardinal.
- 2:40:07Dodger seven comes by bottom of

- 2:46:38the trial will not bad outfielder
- 2:46:39Jim Bolger will bat for him and
- 2:46:42that's why wise is warming up in
- 2:46:44the bullpen.
- 2:46:45Here's the pitch now.
- 2:46:46Bolger takes a strike on one
- 2:46:52Chicago Cup utility outfielder
- 2:46:54Jim Bolger batting with one out
- 2:46:55of the ninth and LeBron trying
- 2:46:56to slam the door in their face.
- 2:46:59Here's the pitch curve low
- 2:47:01outside ball one one and one to
- 2:47:03Bolger.
- 2:47:04the host is due up next.
- 2:47:08But walk Warren is out in the
- 2:47:09on deck circles swinging a couple
- 2:47:11of bats.
- 2:47:11One one count.
- 2:47:18LeBron lines and far curveball
- 2:47:21jump foul off to the right with
- 2:47:23the Dodger bat rack.
- 2:47:24Captain P. Reese comes out of a
- 2:47:26dugout to make play on that one
- 2:47:27favorite.
- 2:47:28Well that's full futile Muslim
- 2:47:32urinal track on Senator Jim
- 2:47:34Bolger fighting for YouTube
- 2:47:37videos.
- 2:47:38One ball two strikes on
- 2:47:40Pinchotter Jim Bolger
- 2:47:44Lown has stopped throwing in the bullpen for Chicago now
- 2:47:48He's been down there for several years so perhaps he's got enough
- 2:47:52Empire Tom Gorman rubs up a new one for LeBine lobs it out to him
- 2:47:56Dodger seven Cubs five we're in the ninth inning one out none on
- 2:48:08Milwaukee now has scored in the ninth and leads the Giants seven six top of the ninth
- 2:48:14Billy beats Cincinnati three one
- 2:48:16Here's the one two pitch
- 2:48:18Curveball a fly ball to right field
- 2:48:20Somali coming fast for it
- 2:48:22Can't get it at the base there
- 2:48:24Bolger on dunking one in the right near the line
- 2:48:27A base there for the
- 2:48:29Chicago Cubs
- 2:48:31That is September five for Chicago the first off LeBine
- 2:48:36And it brings on Walt Moore and another pitch better
- 2:48:40Warren is a more in the swings that bat with a lot of authority
- 2:48:44As good power as a left-hand batter
- 2:48:47So again the Cubs now from the time under the plate
- 2:48:50And pig the tunnel goes out to talk to LeBine and it might be that Joe rather new in this nationally catching business is going to ask
- 2:48:58When I was the pitch to him
- 2:49:02So for whole skis out after working one inning and he got the crowd out of order and more on now walk one coming on to bat
- 2:49:09Like the last time the Cubs were here more and belted the home run off the barn to get a tie ballgame
- 2:49:16Grand slammer that time. There's a curveball for strike one
- 2:49:22That's tied the ballgame up we played about 16
- 2:49:29No
- 2:49:31Played a few I think
- 2:49:33One one
- 2:49:35the barn delivers fastball on the corner for strike two tomorrow
- 2:49:45Not only Mr. Defect Alan strike to count
- 2:49:51Walt Warren pinch hitting for pitcher Tom for home game one out one on ninth inning
- 2:49:59Setting Dodgers lead seven to five the barn delivers curveball for a ball one and two on deck is Bobby Morgan
- 2:50:08the Cubs are in the lead with a three to one lead
- 2:50:12the Cubs are in the lead with a three to one lead
- 2:50:22Chicago second baseman
- 2:50:24Pitcher Jim Bolger on first single the right field with one out of the fire that Dodgers have seven curveball bounce foul off the first base side
- 2:50:41It's the box seat readying and rolls out toward the foul line in the first base umpire how Nixon throws it out
- 2:50:47One ball two strikes on pitch better Walt Warren
- 2:50:55Don Buffett now back to the firing line in the bullpen for the Dodgers
- 2:51:01One and two here's the pitch curveball looped to the left field along the line feeling off foul out of play
- 2:51:15Warren swinging late sliced her foul down the left field line one and two
- 2:51:23Dodger infield a bit to the right and double play depth Neil way wide a third
- 2:51:31Jim were halfway up and over a bit toward the second William back about normal depth on the right side
- 2:51:39And Hodges moving in and out behind the runner at first one and two here's the pitch up high for ball two two now on Walt Warren
- 2:51:49Pinch header here in the ninth inning
- 2:51:57Dodger seven Chicago Cup five first game of the series tomorrow night there'll be a Jersey City Thursday night right back here at
- 2:52:06the field and over the weekend it'll be Cincinnati single games on Friday night and Saturday afternoon double hitter Sunday here's the pitch fastball high side ball three and now the
- 2:52:19Dodger has worked the count out ball in the spot three to on the header Walt Warren with one out one on and the Dodger lead two runs
- 2:52:37And we'll see how Chicago's going to play at both your first runs good at good speed and we're simply going to let him go with the Cubs two runs behind they might play a play
- 2:52:49Two to the barn check those you're holding in the pitch a strong line of the center center coming on fast can't play a base that I'm both are goes in and hold the second base not as well comes to them at the cutoff spot and the Cubs have the time runs on now with Bobby Morgan coming on
- 2:53:09Two players in a row for Bob stepping deliver on the job have to on with one out and Bobby Morgan coming on the struck out flat out walked and single scored twice and it looks like we're going to have a runner now more on that it'll probably be wise and then
- 2:53:27Fielder who was running in the bullpen and we'll see Casey wise coming on to run and here's the change for the Dodgers now Carl Ferrello is going to right field you know Somali will go to left field and out will come Sandy Amarillo for the defense also makes a change and since for the right here in the night into left field goes Somali and a runner at
- 2:53:56first base for more than Casey wise all kinds of changes going on in this ballgame far from being over as the Cubs now have roared back from a seven nothing deficit to a spot where it's seven five and they have the time runs on with one out of the night and the
- 2:54:12buying time to get them out. Casey wise runner for more than a single defender on the three to play right. Oh wow. All this is going on. Let's light up a lucky lean back and see what happens. Things getting a bit hectic here at
- 2:54:32first base. We're going to have a look at the right field tonight. the bind are ready to work on Morgan is one for three. Here's the pitch. Powerball at the plate strike one.
- 2:54:48the Cubs go back for five innings that thrown a no hitter at the Cubs better than 60 walk Morgan and then speak at a home run the first hit and two runs from the eighth after he struck out the first man Morgan single speak walked and banked at a home run to make a seven five.
- 2:55:05the walls lined out or make a double that brought on LeBron got the third out there and day along and now got the first out of the night but back to back single to put the cup right back in business. the one pitch inside the ball
- 2:55:19in the count is one and one one ball one strike ninth inning Dodger seven and the Cubs five seven hits for Brooklyn and six for Chicago. Here's the look in the pitch.
- 2:55:41the
- 2:56:09Here's the pitch.
- 2:56:10A pop fly at second base.
- 2:56:12Gilliam comes in, infield fly
- 2:56:13rule is on and Gilliam makes the
- 2:56:15play.
- 2:56:16Morgan is out.
- 2:56:17He broke his back.
- 2:56:18Gilliam let off the fist.
- 2:56:19So there are two outs now and
- 2:56:21Bob Speak coming on as the last
- 2:56:23hope for Chicago.
- 2:56:24But he's had a pretty good
- 2:56:26night.
- 2:56:27He walked, flied out, hit a home
- 2:56:28run and walked.
- 2:56:29Scored twice.
- 2:56:30Speak hitting two fifty.
- 2:56:31One for two tonight.
- 2:56:33If the Dodgers can hang on and
- 2:56:36win they'll move to within two
- 2:56:38games at the top.
- 2:56:39the Phillies now move to win one
- 2:56:41of the top one and a half.
- 2:56:44One and a half.
- 2:56:54I left hand better Bob Speak
- 2:56:56facing Clem LeBarn with two out
- 2:56:57two on in the ninth inning.
- 2:56:58Here's the pitch.
- 2:57:00Curve strike.
- 2:57:01Nothing in one.
- 2:57:05And kind of holding their breath
- 2:57:06here at Ebbets Field.
- 2:57:09And for you I'll light up a
- 2:57:10lucky and let's see.
- 2:57:14On one on Bob Speak left hand
- 2:57:16better hitting in the number two
- 2:57:17spot for Chicago.
- 2:57:21Here's the check and here's the
- 2:57:22pitch.
- 2:57:23Bob all bounced off to the left
- 2:57:24of the plate.
- 2:57:25Strike two.
- 2:57:37So LeBarn is now one strike away
- 2:57:39from recording his seventh save
- 2:57:41of the year to give Colfax his
- 2:57:43fourth win.
- 2:57:44But that's the mighty big pitch.
- 2:57:46So let's just wait and see.
- 2:57:49Strike two as Speak steps off
- 2:57:51now.
- 2:57:53the Cubs have Bolger at second
- 2:57:54and wise at first.
- 2:57:59Dodgers with a two run lead here
- 2:58:00in the ninth inning.
- 2:58:02Outfield around to the right.
- 2:58:03Infield also.
- 2:58:06Waiting as LeBarn comes up
- 2:58:07delivers.
- 2:58:08Outside with a fastball one and
- 2:58:10two.
- 2:58:11Clem tried to make him take the
- 2:58:12bad one but Speak wouldn't go
- 2:58:13for it.
- 2:58:15One and two to Bob Speak.
- 2:58:27LeBarn ready again.
- 2:58:29the one to look.
- 2:58:30Here's the pitch.
- 2:58:32Curve outside ball to just miss
- 2:58:34the outside corner.
- 2:58:37Clem tried to send one in over
- 2:58:38that corner trying to keep the
- 2:58:39ball away from Speak.
- 2:58:41Keeping from pulling toward that
- 2:58:43short at the wall.
- 2:58:51Dodgers seven Cubs five two out
- 2:58:53two on ninth inning and a two to
- 2:58:56count on the batter Bob Speak.
- 2:59:05LeBarn ready.
- 2:59:06the runners out of a stretch.
- 2:59:16the Dodgers win.
- 2:59:17LeBarn strike out with a one and
- 2:59:19for the Cubs in the ninth no
- 2:59:21runs to hit no errors.
- 2:59:23They left two on the ball game
- 2:59:26fans the final score the Dodgers
- 2:59:28seven the Cubs five.
- 2:59:31We'll be back with a final
- 2:59:32recap of the game in just a
- 2:59:33moment.
- 2:59:34But first here's pretty Miss
- 2:59:36Dorothy Collins.
- 3:00:03Well here are your totals for
- 3:00:04tonight's Brooklyn Dodger win

- 3:00:33faces him.
- 3:00:34He's on one with them.
