- 1:32Rory Malone. Ladies and gentlemen, The American Broadcasting Company brings to its entire
- 1:38network one of radio's most unusual program Pat Novak or Hire. I'm Pat Novak
- 2:17for hire. That's what the sign out in front of my office says at
- 2:38Foghorn for hire. Oh, there are other ways to say it, but
- 2:43down on the waterfront of San Francisco, you got to put your best foot
- 2:46forward, especially if you want to trip up a friend down here. A
- 2:50friend is anybody who's been dead more than ten years. And then it pays
- 2:54to watch out because if you relax, somebody you'll come along and knock you
- 2:57on the back of your stomachs. All right, though I rent the boats
- 3:01and do anything else, you can hide in the dark. It's about all
- 3:06you can ask because along the Embarkodaro, nothing's perfect except the heels. I
- 3:12found that out Wednesday afternoon. She was a lovely girl, the sort of
- 3:16person you'd expect to see in a choir loft about three hours after choir practice.
- 3:23Her hair was red, her eyes were as cold as a rear mortise,
- 3:27and you knew the first time you met her that you'd been seeing her
- 3:29too often. It must have been about five o'clock in the afternoon. I
- 3:32was walking down toward Pere nineteen when she pulled up alongside of me in a
- 3:36cream convertible. Can I give you a lift you already have. Well,
- 3:44is that love or reflex action? What's on your mind? You of is
- 3:47to know back, But don't put on your tracksuit. It's a business matter.
- 3:52In that case, you've got a name. I'm con Reagan. I
- 3:53went by your office a few minutes ago, but you were out. I'm
- 3:57in now, go ahead. It won't take me long as to no back.
- 4:00Stay away from roll him alone? What I'm doing all right? So
- 4:03far? Who is he? He's important to me. I don't want to
- 4:05lose you, mister Novak, So please stay away. Go tell a girl.
- 4:09I don't even know the guy you will. You're not lying now.
- 4:13He's a prize fighter and someone's going to try and hurt him, and you'd
- 4:15rather hurt him first. I'm willing to pay you to stay away from him.
- 4:18I suppose I'm going to see him a lot. Will you pay a
- 4:20lot? I'll give you three hundred dollars? All right, mister Novack,
- 4:25you know you're not smarting angel. If you're pressing that hard, the other
- 4:27team's gonna bid too. The answer is no. I'm afraid that's up to
- 4:30you, but I'm warning you don't do it. Please don't do it.
- 4:34That's what mother used to say. I'm still all right. Maybe Mother liked
- 4:38you better, mister Novak, see you later. Well. I watched her
- 4:54for a minute as she brushed her hair back and started the car. Was
- 4:57nice hair, and the dress helped too. It was dark blue and had
- 5:00a v neck. But the designer believed in big letters. She pulled away
- 5:04and gave me a look you could take on a safari. It was enough
- 5:09to tell me that she was as safe as a tap dancer on a floor
- 5:11full of dynamite caps. I walked up and turned into pair nineteen. When
- 5:15I reached the door of the office, I could see the old man sitting
- 5:18with the desk. He looked tired and a year older than the Bible.
- 5:24His hands were shaking, and his skin was coarse in the color of an
- 5:26old razor strap. When I walked in, he glanced up at me and
- 5:30looked about as happy as a cocker spaniel with his stomach ink. I could
- 5:34talk to you, please, mister Novak, we'll try at once. Go
- 5:38ahead. I'm an old man. You want to argue or go on?
- 5:43I am too old, so I must come to someone for help. My
- 5:46name is Hans Neumaya. I would like you to watch someone for me,
- 5:50someone like Rory Malone. Yeah, but what is this save Rory Malone?
- 5:56Week? What's he to you? I'm his man. Oh you don't ever
- 6:01hear of me because I'm old and not a very good manager. I guess
- 6:08after this fight, well we find hum manager maybe yeah, what swim's this
- 6:13fight tonight? Or you don't know? Or he's a good boy, he's
- 6:17a very good boy. Well, good boys don't need watchings. He got
- 6:21some bad coming out. It's something funny about this fight. He meets with
- 6:27bad people, and or he is a good boy. Yeah, I just
- 6:30met one. How deep do they run? The West is a fellow named
- 6:33Joe Slaeger. He's a bad man, a gambler. Please, mister,
- 6:40no, but you just watch Obie tonight and see he's all right? Are
- 6:43you that rich? Tasa? I don't have much money, just three hundred
- 6:47dollars maybe what I got from the fight. Maybe three hundreds. I don't
- 6:54know. I just got a little money. It's a type pop you win
- 6:59the toss, please you you don't help me? You win? You win?
- 7:02Pop? When do I look at him tonight? You come before the
- 7:06fight in its old. I'll show you too old and juicye. He's all
- 7:10right, yeah about nine? Yeah, please, mister Nolvak, I think
- 7:15you all my life. You watch ol you I think you all my life.
- 7:18Yeah. Well I'm getting short shift on that, but I suppose it's
- 7:20not your fault, pap. See you're nine. Well. I felt sorry
- 7:38for him when he turned and walked out of there. I could afford it.
- 7:42Three hundred bucks. You can buy a lot of crying towels at the
- 7:46door. He turned and smiled once before he shuffled out. He moved down
- 7:49the pier with a nervous, uncertain motion like a flower pedal, and a
- 7:53warm wind. When he disappeared, I took a cab and rode up for
- 7:58the price club. Found out a lot about Rory Malone, and most of
- 8:01it was good. He was a lightweight and Hans new Meyer had picked him
- 8:05up and brought him through the prelimbs up to the main events stuff. He
- 8:09was fighting tonight against a Cleveland boy named George zerkim Le. Betting was even.
- 8:15I ran into a chronicle man whose wife divorced him and named a fight
- 8:18club his correspondent, and he said not to worry about Joe Slagel, that
- 8:22Rory Malone fought for purses. And that's all he knew about the girl con
- 8:26Reagan, but he didn't want to say much, just that she was a
- 8:28fast five gated horse trying for seven. Well, I had some dinner and
- 8:33I went over to the arena about eight thirty. When I walked into Rory
- 8:35Malone's dressing room, Hans new Meyer wasn't anywhere around. I stood over in
- 8:39a corner and watched him get ready for the fight. There was enough lineman
- 8:43being thrown around to keep an old Ladies Home spry for years. The other
- 8:48handlers were in watching him tape up Malone and put on the gloves. Most
- 8:50of the people cleared out them. Malone shadow boxed a minute before a second
- 8:54threw a robe around his shoulders and shoved him toward the door. As he
- 8:58passed, I fell in beside him and we started walking under the arena A
- 9:01few feet down. I bumped up against him, saying about what hands Newmeyer
- 9:07oil? Where's new Mayre? What do you care? My name's Novak.
- 9:09I'm supposed to meet him here. Do you know where he is? No?
- 9:11He doesn't show up he's probably not drunk. Does he drink? No,
- 9:13Well, that's a funny answer. I don't know where he is.
- 9:16All I know is I need him tonight. I gotta get up of the
- 9:18ring. I'll go with you so just so you're gonna win tonight. You
- 9:24never know. Sometimes you do miss there, hear Riet, are too smart
- 9:28or too dumb? What's the difference. You can't fight twice in one night.
- 9:35I want to talk to you, Rory, not no Kitty at the
- 9:37fight. Please, Rory, talk to me now, getting you're crazy.
- 9:39This guy is standing around a lot of other people. What do you want
- 9:41to do? Put him on the radio. Where's he hasn't been wrong?
- 9:46Where is he right? I don't know, Kitty. If I know,
- 9:48I get him something wrong? Rory, I've been watching. I know there's
- 9:50something wrong about this fight. Yeah, yeah, there's only going to be
- 9:54one guy fighting. If you don't let me out, don't brush me off
- 9:58like a dumb fly. I know is something wrong. I want you to
- 10:01get into trouble, all right, kill don't see all right? When you
- 10:05know how I feel. Let's talk about you and Joe Sleago, please,
- 10:11Rory. You don't know what it's like to see somebody in love go crazy
- 10:15your do you know that doesn't count, Rory. Little money I save doesn't
- 10:20count next to you. Oh please, Rory, don't do anything wrong.
- 10:26I die. I die of terrible heartbreak. It hurts me all my life.
- 10:33Stop it when you're kidding, I stop crying. I don't worry.
- 10:35I'll win. Just don't let anything happen. Right, I want to say
- 10:39after the fight, coming on that. Yeah, you're real good with your
- 10:48women, Malone. After this fight, I want to match with you.
- 10:50Know that I met two of them, and they both have you and their
- 10:52dream books. Right on the fly. I'll remember talk some more. I'll
- 10:56talk enough to tell you you're being followed about twelve inches behind. That's right,
- 10:58Malone, keep walking China in the next door. You better walk alone
- 11:03unless you can run a bullet. I agreed an hour ago. All right,
- 11:11holding the dop for a meddi. Okay, you stand over here,
- 11:18I'm alone. Take off your glove. I'm gonna need it. You're gonna
- 11:22be eating teeth. Take off your glove. Help him at he Yeah,
- 11:28that's it. Hold him on the other science stairs. Put his hand on
- 11:33the Tableady, I'll give me the block yeah, you can crime alone.
- 11:43It's gonna hurt. Okay, hold him, keep his hand out there.
- 11:52Ready the glove back on alone. It's too smashed that it will hold the
- 12:00faces. Put it on. You better put it on. A blow and
- 12:01you're overmatched. That's it. I go wine up there and look good.
- 12:07Yeah, why don't you hold him the gun and he'll win in two rounds.
- 12:09Look, mister, I don't know who you are, but I'm sick
- 12:11of in moth. It's a big floor, it's a stretch out. During
- 12:35the next two hours, they either moved me or the arena, because I
- 12:37woke up in an alley down there the Golden Gate Theater. It was in
- 12:41the back of a restaurant, and I was lying there trying to look good
- 12:43in a mixed green salad. My head was about the size of a diving
- 12:48bell, and my clothes were so rumpled and dirty. I looked like a
- 12:50legman for the Hoboe News. I tried to get to my feet once,
- 12:54but it wasn't easy. It was like trying to push a basketball through a
- 12:58stovepipe. I think it was close to eleven when I got out to the
- 13:03street. I didn't even buy a paper to find out about the fight.
- 13:05I grabbed a cab and went up to my apartment, iron out of my
- 13:07spine. It was a good idea. But the girl at the desk had
- 13:11a message from Hans Newmyre. He was out at the California General Hospital and
- 13:16he wanted to see me right away. When I got there, he was
- 13:20at the end of a ward on the third floor, but the duty nurse
- 13:22wouldn't let me buy. Oh, she was a real pretty nurse, if
- 13:24you like pure mammal. Somebody buzzed, and when she oozed down the hall,
- 13:28I ducked into the ward and started looking for hands Newmyre, who was
- 13:33dark, and he was away down at the end behind a white screen.
- 13:35He looked tired, and his eyes were moist and soft, like a ripe
- 13:39fruit that's just been squeezed too hard. Geez, mister, know that you've
- 13:43come to see me. Yeah, as soon as I got your message,
- 13:46you make mistake, Miss Hunts. I don't send message if somebody wants to
- 13:52be your secretary. What happened to you in my room? I just got
- 13:56to my room. Somebody is there? I don't know? Oh? Is
- 14:03all that? I limped a little? Mister your boy got his hands smashed.
- 14:07Aw, he's a good boy. He's got a good girl. Who's
- 14:11kidding. She's cool with holy a long time, save money to marry something
- 14:20that somebody coming down this way, come here, bind that curtain. Maybe
- 14:30who comes to visit me? Whoever came to visit him didn't stay long.
- 14:52The old man leaned back in the bed and quit without any fanfare, like
- 14:56a long summer coming to an end. Well, I went out to get
- 15:01the nurse and I found her out at the end of the hall giving an
- 15:03intern some greedy talk. She hadn't heard the shots, and they hadn't seen
- 15:07anybody come out of the ward. I told her as much as I could,
- 15:09and then she wheeled the old man into another room and called homicide.
- 15:13Now that called a homicide didn't help, because from now on things weren't going
- 15:16to improve. I was fighting a forest fire with a Canna keara scene.
- 15:22About twenty minutes later, Inspector Helman showed up. He was full of finesse
- 15:24and fury, and he came charging over about as graceful as a lame lobster.
- 15:28Oh no, VC, you're up late. I had company most of
- 15:31the time. Yeah, did he boy, you somebody got tired of him.
- 15:33It happened behind the screen down there an award. Who is he guy
- 15:35in the name of Hans Neumeyer. He manages a fighter named Rory Malone.
- 15:39Yeah, the killings mixed up with a fight face, not the zerk fight.
- 15:41Yeah, that's right. They got to Rory Malone ten minutes before a
- 15:45ring. Time. You got a thin story, Novak. Look, I
- 15:46got a fat one and I got all again when going down on my side.
- 15:50The old man got it because Rory Malone was dumped in that fight.
- 15:52I don't believe it. You don't have to believe it, hellman. They
- 15:54smashed him up. His right hand was as limp as an old piece of
- 15:56letts when he climbed into that ring. They should have smashed both hands,
- 15:58though, because Rory malown won by a knockout in the fifth round. Trying
- 16:02to the page, Novak, When Helman told me Rory Malone one that fight,
- 16:17I might as well I handed him a feather. I stood there feeling
- 16:19like a guy peddling dope at his sister's wedding. How could Rory Malona won
- 16:23that fight without a hand grenade? When I saw the hand It wasn't strong
- 16:27enough to flatten a piece of silk on on Ivory table, and yet he
- 16:30won by a knockout in the fifth round. I pointed to one thing Zari
- 16:34could take in a dive. But why are the double fixed? Why had
- 16:37they smashed Rory's hand? Oh, it was a goofy pitch, like sending
- 16:41for a plumber to fix a hole in Boulder Dam. I didn't have time
- 16:45to wrestle around with it because Helman had talked on his mind. He can't
- 16:48get a booky in town to take bits in this one, Novak. No,
- 16:49not with you setting the odds. They were that way when I got
- 16:52there, So don't write up a clean bill of health. The guy's dead
- 16:55and nobody else's volunteering. You'd muff a confession anyway before you tumbled. They'd
- 16:57have to cut it in stone across the front of city Hall. What were
- 17:00you doing with the old man, helping him over the rough spots or taking
- 17:03him over the hurdle. He hired me to watch Rory Malone. They were
- 17:07stepping up the pace on his boy, for instance. For instance, Joe
- 17:08Slagel, everybody says he had a steak in the fight you don't throw a
- 17:11fight by winning in the fifth round. That's what the book says, but
- 17:14sometimes the book's wrong. You better look up Joe Schlagel, and on the
- 17:15same trip you can stop buy and see a gall named con Reagan. Yeah.
- 17:18Why, she's Malone's new sparring partner of Paul Redhead with lots of dry
- 17:22cells. She sounds nice. I'll talk to her and Slago too that I'm
- 17:30gonna find out about you and Rory Malone. First, I'm gonna run down
- 17:34this stuff on this fight and I'll find out where you fit in. Don't
- 17:37worry, no vac ou de gat. You could take the jelly out of
- 17:40an omelet. Helman. Look up the girl and Joe Slagel. I'll talk,
- 17:42not about each other, there's some connection there. I'll give even money
- 17:45their friends. They want to be what they were married a month ago in
- 17:48Las Vegas. Or don't you know about love? Hellman stood there a moment
- 18:03and smiled like a guy who's just killed the landlord, and then he turned
- 18:06around and walked out. Well, I stayed until they wrapped up the old
- 18:10man, and after that I went with the chronicle office and pulled the clips
- 18:12on Joe Slade. He'd been to three jails and gotten his master's at Alcatraz,
- 18:18and there were some pictures of him at the racetrack. He had to
- 18:21face any museum would buy in a ford that was so low he must have
- 18:23had to look down to see his hairline. There was one other thing about
- 18:26him. I noticed he was the same guy who'd smashed Rory Malone's hand.
- 18:32I began to wonder about that friendship, but it was getting late and I
- 18:33had to work fast, so I looked up the only honest guy I know,
- 18:37an ex doctor and a boozer with the name of Jock Omdigan. He's
- 18:41a smart guy and until he decided a head on your beer is worth more
- 18:44than a head on your shoulders. I finally found him in a little joint
- 18:48down on Geary Street, talking to some woman into giving up all men under
- 18:51fifty. Petsy, I've missed you in a rather a trivial way. All
- 18:56right, chuckle, I'm giving these women an lecture on diminishing return. JACKO,
- 19:00will you start drinking long enough to listen? Patsy, you fail to
- 19:04understand my drinking. Actually I hate whiskey, but I go on drinking as
- 19:10a sort of suff to providence, because everyone knows the Guardian Angels take care
- 19:15of small children and tipplers. And since I've passed the age where I look
- 19:19well in rampers, this is a very clever dodge to get a little outside
- 19:23help. Chuck, are you ever going to change? Patsy? Don't you
- 19:27know what a burden change is to a man as old as I are?
- 19:30Oh? Yeah, see, it's not the change we mind, it's the
- 19:33way it happens by degrees, never giving you a chance to remember anything else.
- 19:38So it's heartbreaking. Pert. It's like visiting a half forgotten neighborhood.
- 19:44It hasn't changed completely, just parts of it, a few old houses and
- 19:48some human remnants, is still around, enough to remind you of the change,
- 19:52but never enough to make you happy. It's that way with growing over.
- 19:56Listen. They don't allow you to grow old suddenly and leave. They
- 20:00insist on this policy of having you dribble off into eternity. It's undignified,
- 20:07Patsy feeling like a bowl of old dishwater with the stopper pulled out. JOCKO,
- 20:11I want to talk to you. Oh why didn't you say so?
- 20:14What's the matter. An old guy in the name of hands Newmyra is dead.
- 20:17Oh bless him. Homicides full of fever. They think I killed the
- 20:19old man? What did he do before he stopped doing it? A fight
- 20:23manager? He hired me to watch his fighter, Rory Malone. He should
- 20:26have hired a team because somebody got to him in the hospital tonight. How
- 20:30do you fit him? I was just passing through when the noise started.
- 20:33That was General Custer's problem. It's tied up with tonight's fight. Numaya was
- 20:37afraid of a gamber named Joe Slaye. He was around the night. Smashed
- 20:40Malone's hand before a ring time. That's a hard way to lose. It's
- 20:44a harder way to win. Malone won by a knockout in the fifth?
- 20:47Was he fighting his father. I'm not getting any place, Jocko, and
- 20:49I'm doing it in a hurry. It's a bad fit all the way around.
- 20:52They took two tries to get the old man. And if Slago bought
- 20:56the fight, why do he smashed Malone's hand. That's heaven drinking, Jocko.
- 20:59You got to help me. It's the thirst that's confusing. I want
- 21:02you to get up to Roy Malone's place. You can find it in the
- 21:03book. Go through his stuff and try to pick up a lead with you.
- 21:07Why don't you do it? I'm going to look up a girlfriend named
- 21:08Conrie and she's married to slag One, but she's trying to work Malone into
- 21:11the act. M Well, in that case, i'd be in the way.
- 21:15Look, I'm in a spot, Jack and I get up to that
- 21:18apartment. Will you what if Malone walks in and finds me going through his
- 21:21stuff? Stop worrying? He almost killed a man with one broken hand.
- 21:25Suppose someone smashed the other one. Well, I had to do something quick
- 21:37because the kettle was on to boil by the time Hellman got to him.
- 21:41Slagelould have an alibi, and my story about the smashed hand wouldn't prove a
- 21:44thing. I had to grope around and pretend like a guy. On the
- 21:48second verse of the National Anthem, I decided to tag by Slagel's place,
- 21:52and on the way I bought a paper to read about the fight. Malone
- 21:56looked real bad for four rounds and then came out of the woods fast with
- 21:59a left hand in the fifth. It was about midnight when I got to
- 22:03Slagel's apartment room began to look more and more like it when con Reagan opened
- 22:07the door. Oh, I could see Rory's point. She was a sort
- 22:11of a woman you'd never give a second look, because the first it paralyze
- 22:15you. Her red hair looked brighter now, and well, legs like that
- 22:21are the reason silkworms are born. She smiled, and you knew if you
- 22:25had never made Naples, you could die happy with her. But I guess
- 22:27she picked her friends. It's too late for the three hundred now, mister
- 22:30Nobeck, I'm working free. Invite me in a sorry darling, you look
- 22:36lonely? Where slavely? I agreed to marry him, not following about Malone,
- 22:40somebody killed his manager. I'd like to help you, mister Noback,
- 22:42but I don't like you well enough. Well you can make love later.
- 22:45Give me answers. Now, where you're going, you're not welcome. I
- 22:47want to know what those bags are packed for. I don't trust the drawers.
- 22:48Now get out of here, mister Noback. Calm down and put the
- 22:51gun away. Get out of here. You came on, invite it.
- 22:52I'll kill you the same way. Hello, no bag, you're gonna lose
- 22:56an argument. Well, it looks that way. If she's yours caller off
- 22:59Malone, tough gun. Let him walk up. He's deemed in here full
- 23:02of questions. That's a bad way to answer, Relie. That's what your
- 23:04man neu Mayer is doing. Somebody killed him tonight. I know that,
- 23:07Novak your eyes. I'm very red. I can't help, but Novank.
- 23:11All I can do is square is beef and you can start with your girlfriends.
- 23:14He's leaving town or did you buy the tickets? But Yourn I want
- 23:17to leave. I can't leave, Rory. I'll argue, would you You'll
- 23:18get the short end, Rory, because I'm leaving. Stay away from me.
- 23:22You're too close. Someday they'll met you, Eve and Rory. Maybe
- 23:30it's a referee. I'll get it. Yeah, you got a deep voice,
- 23:36miss Reagan. What's on your mind? Helman? Joe s right now?
- 23:40He cleaned up in tonight's fight, not with a betting, even wasn't.
- 23:41After the first round word got out, the Malone broke his hand,
- 23:45the betting chained, and Slegel covered every bed in the house. That's right,
- 23:48Well, the old man tumbled before it happened that's what he was afraid
- 23:51of. Did you got a motive now, Helman, you better look him
- 23:53up? We did. He's dead. He couldn't be dead if he's not.
- 23:56The bullet holes are good fakes, he assumed Novak. Well, I
- 24:15didn't talk to the girl and Rory because I knew they dummy up on me
- 24:18and I had nothing to go on. It was like trying to build a
- 24:22wall out of jelly consome. Nothing added up. Now, whose side was
- 24:27Rory on him? Where did that other girl kitty fit in? My luck
- 24:33was on the black market tonight and I knew it. So I went by
- 24:36my place to check with Jacko. He was in the kitchen, and he
- 24:38looked worried. Ah, Patsy, you know, I was going to break
- 24:44open the thermometer until I found this bottle in the clout. All right,
- 24:47jack what'd you find out that it pays to know Joe Slagel. There's a
- 24:52twenty thousand dollars check in Malone's desk. Slagel signed it. He could afford
- 24:56it. Somebody killed him an hour ago. Well it was Malone. I
- 24:59don't know, but that's not gratitude. Maybe he wir regrets you'd better get
- 25:03up there. All the stuffs pecked for a long trip, well, well,
- 25:07a couple of trunks and all these bags. Does that sound like a
- 25:10weekend party? I don't know, Jacko, he's kind of fancy. Maybe
- 25:12he likes a lot of laundry. Up to now, it was like trying
- 25:27to melt a pound of diamonds. But when the turn comes, everything happens
- 25:30in a hurry, and things began to fall faster than snow off a warm
- 25:33roof. If Jocko was right, it meant Rory and the girl fought,
- 25:37but they did a lot of clinching between rounds. Well, I got a
- 25:41hold of Helmet and brought him up to date, and then I started for
- 25:42Rory Malone's apartment. When I got there, Helman was outside the door,
- 25:47listening, as quiet as a washing machine full of pebbles. It must be
- 25:49in the back room. I can't hear a thing. You couldn't hear a
- 25:52rifle shot in a box car. Helmet, let's get a better view to
- 25:56miss your train. Malone. It's a chance to bet this is Inspector Helman
- 26:00from homicide. But he got strong, Inspector. I'm covered for Joe Slagel
- 26:04Novak Hair's alibi for miss Reagan. Check. You're scraping bottom, mister.
- 26:08We can start with a twenty thousand dollars check from Joe Slagel. That's why
- 26:11you'll stop too. The twenty thousand covered a sale of my contract. The
- 26:15fight commission can beef. But that's all you ready come? I hope you
- 26:18are too, because you're going downtown. Look fully, you can make us
- 26:22miss a train, but we'll catch the next one you're wishing now, Roy,
- 26:25who's this a fast friend with a slow burn? Hello, Kitty,
- 26:27your boyfriend's gonna leave, Saygabye, you're crazy to go with her. She
- 26:32makes me that way, Kitty. I'm sorry, Rory. I've done too
- 26:34much for you. I've kept loving you all this time. I can't leave.
- 26:40You can't leave. No, I don't want to be alone. Buy
- 26:41a dog. No, Rory, No, I won't let you go too
- 26:45good with guns drop it. You better take her helmet. She's angry.
- 26:51Don't please, Rory. I loved you too much for this. I loved
- 26:56you enough to kill somebody. You can't leave, Rory. Can't leave me
- 27:00to myself. When the guy comes, tell him where the baggage is what
- 27:03will become of you, Rory Malone? What will become of you Malone when
- 27:07you have to think about me, when you hear the sound of me in
- 27:11your head. You're brave, Rory. You're brave to leave me alone.
- 27:17Come on, conn in a place like this, we're wasting you. Come
- 27:21back, Come back, Rory Malone, come back long enough too. The
- 27:26love at me would have love at me for the fool I am. Oh,
- 27:33it's the great fool in the world. I well, it doesn't prove
- 28:02much, except the right kind of a heel can grind you into the dirt
- 28:04fast well. Helman pieced most of the story together. Slagel and Malone planned
- 28:11the fight and it went off without a hitch. Slagel bought off the other
- 28:14fighter so that Malone could win as soon as the bets had been covered.
- 28:18Hans new Meyer had an idea, but he liked Rory too much to believe
- 28:22it. They found out he was coming to me, and con Reagan tried
- 28:25to scare me off. She looked too good to Rory, and the scheme
- 28:29started to grow. He lied to Slagel after the fight about new Meyer,
- 28:33so Slagel went into the hospital and killed the old man. That left Slagel
- 28:37around to cloud things up. So Rory Malone told a phony story to his
- 28:41girlfriend Kitty. She loved him enough to kill Slagel. There was no way
- 28:48to stick Rory Malone. They could never fight again with that hand. But
- 28:52he had a check for twenty thousand bucks to start on him. That's enough
- 28:56to keep love in the living room. Well, Hellman asked only one question.
- 29:03Why would a smart gambler like Slagel take a chance on giving Malone a
- 29:07check for twenty thousand bucks. I guess Malone found out when he tried to
- 29:11cast that check because Joe Slagel was big hearted but broke. The American Broadcasting
- 29:33Company has just brought you the sixth of a new series, Pat Novak for
- 29:37Hire, starring Jack Webb. Pat Novak is produced and directed by William p.
- 29:41Russo. Jocko Madigan is played by Tudo. Our own inspector Helman is
- 29:47played by Raymond Burr. Music was composed and conducted by Basil Adlam. In
- 29:51our cast were Yvonne Pete, Stephen Schnabel, Frank Lovejoy, William Bayev,
- 29:56and Ted de Courcia. His program is being released to our service men and
- 30:00women overseas to the worldwide facilities of the Armed Forces Radio Service. Be with
- 30:06us again next week when over most of these same ABC stations, we will
- 30:10bring you Pat Novak for Hire. This program came to you from Hollywood.
- 30:29Now a listening reminder don't miss Gene Arthur and Robert Morley when they star in
- 30:34the compelling drama Yesterday's Magic on Theater Guild on the air tonight. This is
- 30:41ABC, the American Broadcasting Company. Welcome back. I love the twist on
- 30:47this program because typically you would think that the band guard was about to get
- 30:57away with it in terms of Rory and his girl, that they were,
- 31:03you know, even though that because they were not legally culpable for what happened,
- 31:07but they really did have some moral culpability in what happened, and it
- 31:15looked like they were getting away with a good check chunk of change. But
- 31:18then that last minute, that last minute revelation really changed the whole complexion of
- 31:26the end. The idea of Rory getting away scout for he was kind of
- 31:32cynical and almost added a character for the series. Because the criminals and the
- 31:41bad people have to pay a price in the end. Then they came up
- 31:45with an ending where they added actually a little bit more cynicism, but to
- 31:48get to the same result of a sort of crime doesn't pay ending. And
- 31:52I also love the quotes. I chose one thing for the quote in the
- 31:59show notes this time, I'm I just chosen something else another time. When
- 32:02you listen to Pat and Novack, it's not like there's just one quote that
- 32:08could plausibly be the quote of the episode. So much stuff and then the
- 32:14pictures in the word imagery. It's just powerful and really like nothing that you'll
- 32:22hear anywhere else. All Right, Well, on to some listener comments and
- 32:25feedback over on Facebook, and Rebecca says, I love the Pat Novac commentary,
- 32:36thanks for putting it on the podcast. Robin approved of the quote we
- 32:40chose for that week, which it was he was about the size of a
- 32:44golf bag with arms. If he had a cigar box, he could see
- 32:47over a pool table, and Fatty says I wasn't looking forward to the Pat
- 32:52Novac replays, but gave them a second chance, and now remember why I
- 32:55love them so much the first time. Well, I'm glad that you you
- 33:00enjoyed it. And this is one of those series I don't mind going through
- 33:04a second time, though, with so many other programs at going through it
- 33:09just to kind to recreate the experience of original listeners is what's driving my decision
- 33:16to replay it at this point. But there'd be merit to the idea even
- 33:22if it wasn't. All right. Well, that will do it for today.
- 33:28We will be back tomorrow with Philip Marlow and this time the adaptation of
- 33:34Lady in the Lake. And we will be back next Tuesday with another episode
- 33:38of Patnovak for Hire. In the meantime, send your comments to Box thirteen
