- 0:01Welcome to authentic living with Roxanne, a place where we have conscious cover about
- 0:09things that really matter in our lives.
- 0:12And now here's your host, Roxanne Turhage.
- 0:33Everyone, it's, Roxanne.
- 0:36Thanks for tuning in this week, to I have a special guest, Chuck Davis.
- 0:45Chad and I met each other a couple of years ago now.
- 0:49We were in a a pretty big, mass mind group out of the US where we were privileged to, run
- 0:55across each other.
- 0:56And we have some, common colleagues and in, in common now that we stay connected with.
- 1:02So, Chad, welcome, to authentic living with Roxanne.
- 1:06Thanks so much, Roxanne.
- 1:07I'm happy to be here.
- 1:08So Chad's gonna talk about something that I know that most of us struggle with.
- 1:12I know I do and I try to maintain my cool, but probably not a very pretty way often through my
- 1:17day, which is technology.
- 1:20So Today, Chad's gonna talk to us a little bit about his expertise, and he is an expert in, in
- 1:27in technology.
- 1:28So I'll I'll read a little bit about chat for you.
- 1:30And, Chuck's gonna fill in any blanks that I maybe missed.
- 1:34He's an award winning technology teacher who's helped over a 100,000 people learn, how to use
- 1:40technology more successfully, creatively, and more securely.
- 1:44He's taught workshops, online courses, webinars and delivered presentations on a wide range of
- 1:49technology topics, coupled with this classroom teaching experience He makes it difficult
- 1:55attainable with his engaging front approach and his in-depth knowledge of all things tech.
- 2:02Sounds pretty good to me, chat.
- 2:05Wow.
- 2:05I hope I can live up to that.
- 2:08The chat I'm you know, I know you work with a lot of different people, in a lot of different
- 2:16professions like, with our our world or circles.
- 2:20It's a lot of speakers, trainers, authors, and an an entrepreneur on an ongoing basis.
- 2:26So tell me kind of what's what got you in this this path?
- 2:32Like what what got you into technology.
- 2:37Yeah.
- 2:37It, you know, from an early age, I, I was very comfortable with technology, very comfortable
- 2:43with systems and things.
- 2:46And, coupled with a creative approach, I I I played the trumpet growing up, that was kind of
- 2:52my art form and and now very much into what I call digital storytelling, you know,
- 2:56photography and video.
- 2:58And, as I got older, I saw my father struggle with technology.
- 3:03And in his eighties, I, my parents lived just a couple hours away, and and I I saw him really,
- 3:11really struggling.
- 3:12And that was it it was a challenge for me to see, a man who I looked up to and who could
- 3:18always do anything.
- 3:20And, he was trying to to use technology to stay in touch with his body easier now and and watch
- 3:26his golf online and and, with their community and the church choir and all that stuff.
- 3:33And and and regularly getting calls of his frustration and it it it just frustrated me to
- 3:41see him so challenged.
- 3:43And, I realized there was just so much potential in in helping others master the
- 3:51benefits of technology.
- 3:52I I I, you know, it it's a double edged sword.
- 3:54There's a lot of challenges, and there's certainly a lot of information about a a a p
- 3:58how people use technology.
- 4:00And and I don't advocate using it in place of a human connection, but I think it can help
- 4:05inspire human connection and create connection.
- 4:08And that's when I kind of set inside myself, you know, I'm gonna do whatever I can to help
- 4:14people feel more comfortable with what I think is an important tool.
- 4:20Absolutely.
- 4:21And I think connection key.
- 4:22Right?
- 4:22Like, I think of, you know, I'm dating myself, but I remember, you know, when when Facebook
- 4:28came out and and, you know, I was kinda like, nah, I was indifferent.
- 4:31But I grew up in Trinidad.
- 4:33So, you know, I left home when I was sixteen to come to Canada to go to school.
- 4:37And of course, like with a lot of the my other friends, they went all over the world.
- 4:41Some went back to Trinidad, some were state in Europe, you know, all over the US and Canada.
- 4:47And then eventually somebody created this group.
- 4:51From all the people in our year, that's entered school together and graduated together.
- 4:58And guess what happened?
- 4:59So here you are women all over the world now and anything that's going on in anyone's life
- 5:07we know about, which is such a nice element.
- 5:10Right?
- 5:10So even though they don't see my life and kind of what's going on in my life, they they kinda
- 5:14know, you know, what's with my family, those types of things.
- 5:17And then when I go back to Trinidad, it's it's it's like we've never disconnected, which is
- 5:22it's such an awesome and, like, a element to connection.
- 5:26And, you know, I know we have other lots of negatives, which we know all about those, but,
- 5:30you know, the positives to your point with your dad and his buddies and and connection with my
- 5:35friends has been just it's been, invaluable.
- 5:38Yeah.
- 5:39Yeah.
- 5:39Very much.
- 5:39So I know I've connected with a lot of people that I, grew up in the same community with.
- 5:45And, you know, high school classmates and and etcetera, And, yeah, there's a degree of
- 5:49superficiality, but it's but it's way more connection that I had, you know, outside or or
- 5:56prior to that.
- 5:56So There's some I kept in touch on the side, but but a lot more I've reconnected with.
- 6:02And about 15 years ago, we had the benefit we spent a year in a motor home, and I did classes
- 6:07all over the US and Canada.
- 6:09I would we did 40 states and 2 provinces.
- 6:12And and and I met a lot of new people on that trip and I've been able to rekindle friendships
- 6:18and relationships.
- 6:19I I I really do believe that technology has the power to make the world smaller.
- 6:25And so by staying in touch with with friends, you know, on other continents as well, when
- 6:32used properly, I do believe it has the power to increase connection, you know, not replace
- 6:38connection, but increase it or maybe invite it.
- 6:42So tell me about that, I did, you know, I'm remiss in remembering if I did know above that,
- 6:47but tell me about that trip.
- 6:49Like, what was the kind of the impetus to do that.
- 6:52I mean, obviously, it's well in line with what you do, but I'm curious.
- 6:56How what about that idea and what what you experienced and You know?
- 7:01Yeah.
- 7:02That was that was a a marvelous experience.
- 7:06At the time, I was a sales manager for a company that sold a video editing products.
- 7:12And, I I was kind of, for lack of better word, you know, the the the brand representative and
- 7:19I love presenting.
- 7:20I love speaking and teaching and love getting in front of a group and exciting them about the
- 7:28potentials and the possibilities.
- 7:29And so, my boss at the time said, hey.
- 7:32I'd love to get you out in front of as many of our resellers as we can.
- 7:36We had a network of of people across the US and Canada across North America.
- 7:40And and I said, you know, I I love doing that, but I don't wanna be away from my family that
- 7:46much.
- 7:46You know, you want me on the road like every week doing this and this and this and, there's
- 7:50a a part that excites me and and my youngest son was 3 at the time.
- 7:54And, you know, I don't wanna be gone that much.
- 7:56And, so I put my thinking cap on, and I said, what if, you know, my wife had just finished
- 8:02her her doctorate degree.
- 8:04So she was just finishing, her higher university.
- 8:09My son was reached, so he didn't have commitments at school yet.
- 8:12And so I came back and I proposed, hey.
- 8:14What if we do this?
- 8:16You know?
- 8:18Put me in a motor home, and I'll go around to all of these places and we'll do workshops and
- 8:22seminars, etcetera.
- 8:24And, look how much, you know, how many people we can impact.
- 8:27And they said, okay.
- 8:29So we, we put our house up for rent.
- 8:33And I think it was something like sixty two thousand miles in a thirty seven foot motor
- 8:37home towing our car and visiting, like I said, 40 States and 2 provinces and doing workshop
- 8:43some seminars and, it was an amazing experience getting to see parts of our continent and and
- 8:49meeting so many wonderful people.
- 8:51Yeah.
- 8:51I could just imagine what an experience.
- 8:53And then for your son who's kinda like, you know, having lots of learning in such so many
- 8:59different ways and just just how, how ingenious to come up with that because to leave your
- 9:04family behind, you know, we know we're traveling and how tough it is.
- 9:09You know, because it's it's one thing after a while.
- 9:11It's kinda it's kinda glamorous and sexy at the beginning.
- 9:14And then after a while, it's like, okay, get me home.
- 9:17Exactly.
- 9:17And the cool thing about being in a motor home, I I know several people and they meant it said,
- 9:21you're crazy.
- 9:22You know?
- 9:23But interesting thing about being in a motor home is is unlike, working out of a suitcase
- 9:30where, you know, you're in a different hotel each night you you come home at the end of the
- 9:34day too.
- 9:34You're traveling home.
- 9:36So, you know, my son's toys were there.
- 9:38Our our stuff was there.
- 9:39It was my bed with our bedspread, and and my wife was there.
- 9:42And, and so it it was with us, and it truly wasn't met.
- 9:48The only downside was we we got our son started on this on this wanderlust is, you know, when
- 9:54when we finished the trip and we pulled into our driveway at the end of at the end of the
- 9:58trip, he said, Where are we going tomorrow?
- 10:01I said, well, sorry.
- 10:02We're here for a while now.
- 10:06Oh, how cute.
- 10:07So I'm I'm, I want you to kind of, share with with us, kind of, that element of getting
- 10:18comfortable with technology.
- 10:19So I think you you must see a span of people from people like your dad So people that are
- 10:25pretty savvy or high-tech or into things.
- 10:29What when people come to you, chat, what what are their what what genre are people looking
- 10:34for?
- 10:36You know, that I I think that's the first most excellent question is is for me to turn the
- 10:43tables and say, you know, what's your goal?
- 10:46What do you what do you wanna get out of this?
- 10:49And I think the important distinction is, I'm not here to low help you learn technology so
- 10:57that you know technology, I'm here to help you use technology as a tool to accomplish
- 11:05something.
- 11:06So first, we have to identify what is that something, and then let's select the proper
- 11:12tool and teach you what you need to know to use that tool.
- 11:17I use the analogy of of tools because I think it's something easy for us you know, to kind of
- 11:22wrap our our brain around is like if if if if I have, a drawer that that has a loose pull on
- 11:29it, then I know I need to tighten that pull.
- 11:34So I'll go to my toolbox and I'll select a screwdriver?
- 11:38And then do I need a, you know, a flat head screwdriver, or do I need a Phillips
- 11:41screwdriver?
- 11:41Okay.
- 11:41So I gotta select the proper tool.
- 11:43And then I don't need to know everything there is to know about screwdrivers.
- 11:48I just need to have the correct tool that's gonna do what I need it to do.
- 11:52And then I'll put it back in the toolbox.
- 11:54Right?
- 11:54So, I know there's probably screwdriver representatives out there maybe listening on
- 11:59this program who can tell us everything them and, you know, the composition and the
- 12:03strength, etcetera.
- 12:04But, you know, as an end user, I don't need to know all that.
- 12:07I just need to know enough to get my job done.
- 12:11The thing that I experience a lot, Roxanne, is is first of all, I think the huge part is is
- 12:18confidence.
- 12:19And helping instill the confidence that you can do this.
- 12:24I see so many people who have already given up on their own capacity.
- 12:31And in some ways, I'm a life coach.
- 12:36That helps them realize they do have the ability to do this.
- 12:43And, instead of giving it up and and thinking, especially working with a lot of older people,
- 12:51you know, updating myself of an older person myself.
- 12:54Anybody over, like, 3540, it's like, well, you know, My grandkids pick this up, and they can
- 13:00do it right away.
- 13:01You know?
- 13:02Or, you know, this is for the young people.
- 13:04And so all automatically in our minds, We're dismissing our own capabilities.
- 13:08And I say, no.
- 13:09No.
- 13:09No.
- 13:09No.
- 13:09No.
- 13:09Wait a minute.
- 13:10What is it you wanna get done?
- 13:11I believe you can do it, and I can help you do that.
- 13:15You know, it is not such you hear that statement.
- 13:19I I've said it too.
- 13:20I'm a teenager.
- 13:21Right?
- 13:21I'm like, Oh, I'm sure RJ will figure it out.
- 13:24And then you're right.
- 13:25I'm already discounting the my ability to probably just sit through from saying to myself
- 13:30before getting overwhelmed, then I am going to get overwhelmed.
- 13:33So most likely, I will get overwhelmed when I'm stuck.
- 13:36Right?
- 13:36So you're right.
- 13:37It's that confidence of that voice in my head to say, oh my goodness.
- 13:40How am I gonna fig figure out Camtasia?
- 13:42Like, I I'm already overwhelmed I've watched a couple YouTube videos and I'm freaking out.
- 13:51So I think you're right.
- 13:52Having someone just walk you through the steps or teach you some of the basics.
- 13:57Right?
- 13:57And and then figuring out how you learn best.
- 14:02Right?
- 14:03Like, do you let let you learn best by my sometimes I learn best by listening chat and
- 14:07not looking.
- 14:08And sometimes I learn best by listening and watching, and sometimes it's just reading based
- 14:13on on my, you know, my level of, energy or my discomfort or comfort or with learning a new
- 14:19skill?
- 14:19Do you find a lot of people kind of, might struggle with those types of things?
- 14:24Oh, a 100%.
- 14:26100%.
- 14:26That, you know, I think why I have such a passion for this as well Roxanne is is I am a
- 14:33for for good or bad, a classical quote teacher.
- 14:36I I I was a classroom teacher for 17 years, and so, learning styles and modalities I I love to
- 14:45teach people.
- 14:46I love what I what I strive for most is what I call, enjoying the moment.
- 14:51When I'm working with a learner, whether it's in one of my online classes and, you know, they
- 14:55they respond back or or a face to face workshop or, you know, speaking to a group of people
- 15:00when I can see their eyes sparkle and I can see they get it.
- 15:04That just thrills me.
- 15:06It's like, yes.
- 15:06I knew you could and they get it.
- 15:09And that's, to me, is is a real powerful moment and and a lovely moment.
- 15:14And I think that's partly why I'm really excited about, working with people in this
- 15:21realm.
- 15:22I think there's just because you know something doesn't mean you can teach it.
- 15:26And that may put some people off.
- 15:28And and and I don't mean to do that.
- 15:30But it's I mean, teaching is an art and a science.
- 15:33And I believe everybody maybe can be a great teacher, but just saying something isn't
- 15:40teaching.
- 15:40Like you said, some people learn best through list some people through readings, many people
- 15:45by doing it themselves.
- 15:47And so people say often, you know, well, they're you can find anything to do on YouTube.
- 15:51Yeah.
- 15:51But have you waited through all the different options?
- 15:55You know?
- 15:55I have fixed my clothes dryer.
- 15:58I fixed our kitchen range by watching YouTube videos, but I had to sift through ones, some
- 16:05with irrelevant or incorrect information, and some just people who, though well intentioned
- 16:11their video was like, oh my gosh.
- 16:13I can't watch this anymore.
- 16:14And so it's It's that proper presentation.
- 16:18It's covering the material in a way that helps someone learn.
- 16:23I took a left turn there, but I think that's, that's a big challenge is a lot of people set
- 16:28out to learn something and they haven't maybe found the right teacher for themselves yet.
- 16:34That's a good point.
- 16:35Right?
- 16:35Cause I I've I've tried that and sometimes I I you know, I'm in on freak out mode and I'm
- 16:40trying to learn, and then I'm trying to find the I'm trying to find the answer on YouTube.
- 16:43And then I'm like, oh, no.
- 16:44I can't do that.
- 16:45Okay.
- 16:45Forget that.
- 16:46I don't that person has been oh my goodness.
- 16:48No.
- 16:49No.
- 16:49That's too much tax.
- 16:50Or, you know what I mean?
- 16:51You're right.
- 16:51And then before you're you're dizzy, and you're like, okay.
- 16:54I need to take a break now.
- 16:55I think I I I think need a nap.
- 16:57You know what I mean?
- 16:58To go back to it, so you can't ask for that.
- 17:02You know, if I can go back to something you said a minute ago too about learning something
- 17:09new and thinking and starting.
- 17:10And then this is uncomfortable, and it's so easy for the kids.
- 17:13There there's a term you may have heard, and and a lot of people are calling the young
- 17:16people today, digital natives.
- 17:20Our children, our grandchildren, our digital natives.
- 17:23They grew up with this.
- 17:25Okay?
- 17:25It's just around them.
- 17:26It's very natural.
- 17:28For us, where technology is a new thing, it it it doesn't come naturally But again, it doesn't
- 17:36mean that we can't learn it.
- 17:38It's something that, it comes differently to young people.
- 17:43Yes.
- 17:43But again, that's something they're humans.
- 17:46They've learned it.
- 17:47We can do that too.
- 17:48And, I heard an interesting phrase in a podcast this week, and and the presenter said that,
- 17:56discomfort is the currency of your dreams.
- 18:00Discomfort is the currency of your dreams.
- 18:02And I thought about that, and I said, that works well with a lot of people that I work
- 18:06with as well, and and a lot of our colleagues on and speakers and authors and and not
- 18:12suggesting that you go out of your way to find, you know, a life that's uncomfortable.
- 18:17But sometimes because it's new, we as human creatures find things that are new,
- 18:23uncomfortable at first.
- 18:24Right?
- 18:25But then we do it and we realize, oh my gosh.
- 18:26Okay.
- 18:27Yeah.
- 18:27I did that.
- 18:28So that is a big part of of it for me is taking small steps on the way to learn what you need
- 18:35to learn and celebrating every step of the way.
- 18:38You know, that that really makes sense.
- 18:40Right?
- 18:40Because, like, you know, my little example is me freaking out because I'm trying to, you
- 18:44know, bite off too many big chunks, right, and try to and then, you know, kinda thinking,
- 18:49okay.
- 18:49That's not right.
- 18:49That's not right.
- 18:50And then Of course, where am I?
- 18:52I'm just kinda spinning from it versus saying, okay, what part of this can I learn today?
- 18:57Right?
- 18:57What little part of you know, an interface that's new to me can I learn?
- 19:02Right?
- 19:03And then and then mucking around because I'm thinking of when I used to, you know, years ago
- 19:08when we were kinda getting everything kind of, coming at us in reference to marketing with our
- 19:13with our, mastermind in Philadelphia.
- 19:16It was like, during the headlights because it was like, woah, this is a lot of information.
- 19:21And now years later, you were not.
- 19:22I mean, you were already into technology, but me, I was relatively new.
- 19:26And now I look at where I am, you know, 3 years later, and it's it's like night and Day.
- 19:32Yes.
- 19:32There's a lot there's still a lot to learn.
- 19:34But now I'm I'm I'm kinda saying, okay.
- 19:36I can't learn IGTV today, right, because everybody's, you know, every time a new
- 19:41technology comes, everybody's on it.
- 19:43And then you kinda used to, in 15, I would be overwhelmed because I had to learn it.
- 19:48Now I'm like, okay.
- 19:49It's alright.
- 19:49It's not part of my marketing.
- 19:51I might get to it.
- 19:53I talk myself down, then I go from
- 19:55there.
- 19:57Exactly.
- 19:58I think you're right.
- 19:58It's the newness of it and then being realistic about you know, what capacity can I take in
- 20:05knowing I have a new skill and and then, you know, how do I practice it?
- 20:09You know, how do I practice it?
- 20:11Try it, see what works, what's got easier, those types of things.
- 20:15And, like, with anything else, it just gets a little bit more comfortable.
- 20:18We don't like changes.
- 20:19Human beings, you're right.
- 20:20We don't like change.
- 20:22Yeah.
- 20:22Yeah.
- 20:23You know, it it and a a parallel I see with that is kind of that overwhelm and I know a lot
- 20:30of, you know, entrepreneurs face that is like, well, I I feel like I need to be on Facebook
- 20:35and I've gotta have a LinkedIn profile and I gotta be on and I'm I'm setting up my Pinterest
- 20:40and trying to do all these things, and none of them particularly well.
- 20:44And and and and it's much better to just focus on one that you love that that suits you well.
- 20:50And that's that goes back to that tool analogy.
- 20:52Right?
- 20:53When I when I need to fix something, I don't go to my garage and, you know, and grab all these
- 20:57things and bring them back in the house.
- 20:59I that's I have to discern which one's right for me.
- 21:02And so that's the first step is which one's right.
- 21:04And I I the parallel I see with what I call common folks everybody, regardless of your
- 21:12profession, is, around security.
- 21:15And that's been a big focus of me.
- 21:17In fact, I'm hoping to finally have my my book on tech security out this next spring, but
- 21:23it's, is I think people are are learning enough to know that they should be more secure in
- 21:32their use of technology.
- 21:34But they're so overwhelmed.
- 21:36They don't know where to start that it's like, oh, well, you know, that's and kind of dismiss
- 21:42it like, well, that's that's too challenging and I'll I'll just go on and do the best I can
- 21:47when instead of taking those like you said, those those bite sized steps and and instilling
- 21:54the confidence and move through that little bit of discomfort.
- 21:57To take control themselves and realized you do have the capacity to be successful, to be more
- 22:05secure.
- 22:06So tell me some of the things that you actually teach.
- 22:10Are they actual, social media courses?
- 22:15What kind of things do you actually teach on, on your site and on in your coaching?
- 22:21Sure.
- 22:22I I actually about, I I think my online teachings in, I think, 5 different sites.
- 22:26I have I have a 109,000 students right now in in
- 22:30Oh my goodness.
- 22:32A variety of different.
- 22:33And I teach everything from, you know, iPhone Photography, to, using digital tools as a
- 22:40professional So, with with a kind of a hyper focus, authors, speakers, and coaches, using
- 22:48technologies to become more successful in your business there.
- 22:52But, I am launching a new program in the in in the new year that's related to what I call a
- 22:59tech success club helping.
- 23:02Everybody use technology more successful.
- 23:04And that's what I would call general technology.
- 23:06It's not technology for Geeks, I think there's enough people out in the ad space, but it's
- 23:10technology for for for us to to be more successful in in our particular ways.
- 23:16But that focus on security is something that I, is near and dear to me because I've I've I've
- 23:23met with people that have lost 1000 of dollars to scammers.
- 23:28And I was just reading this morning, and it shocked the heck out of me that a year ago,
- 23:36mobile phone, fraud was like 3.7%.
- 23:42This last year, the determination is 30% of all mobile calls are fraudulent.
- 23:49And the expectation is that in 2019, we will see 50% half of all mobile phone calls will be
- 23:57fraudulent in some way, shape, or form.
- 24:00And, like I said, I've seen people usually older citizens, our, you know, our our parents
- 24:06and grandparents, built out of not 100, 1000 of dollars with nobody course, and it just It it
- 24:14just makes me angry.
- 24:17And, that's part of my challenge I think is to enable people to help themselves and help their
- 24:24parents, you know, help family members realize that there's some simple steps we can take and
- 24:29these people are praying on the the fear and the insecurity, but they're using technology in
- 24:35a way that people don't, you know, they're they're making you think there's somebody
- 24:38they're not, and they're using technology very inappropriately, illegally, and and that's
- 24:45where I wanna give people that confidence to say, no.
- 24:48No.
- 24:48I'm gonna hang up now.
- 24:49Right?
- 24:50And you know what?
- 24:50And I I can give you a story, like, you know, to kinda speak to that.
- 24:54And I'm, you know, I'm pretty savvy but I received a call from our, you know, our your
- 25:00equivalent of VRS versus that I'm calling from Revenue Canada.
- 25:05My badge number is blah blah blah blah blah.
- 25:09Really quickly.
- 25:10So I'm like, okay.
- 25:12Right?
- 25:12I'm a business owner, you know, obviously, with our business taxes and all that stuff.
- 25:16And I'm like, and you need, you know, you need to call back, hang up and call back this number
- 25:21immediately.
- 25:22Because there, you know, is some issue with legal action against you from outstanding
- 25:28taxes.
- 25:28And I'm like, well, that doesn't make sense, but I said, Okay.
- 25:31What's the number?
- 25:33I said, give me your give me this number that I need to call back.
- 25:37So I took down the number, And I said, okay.
- 25:39I'll give a callback.
- 25:40Then I called Revenue Canada themselves.
- 25:43The correct number that I knew I had, and I said, I'm calling.
- 25:46I give, you know, give them my social insurance and I said, I just received a call.
- 25:50She said that's fraud.
- 25:53Yeah.
- 25:54Yeah.
- 25:54And I'm like, If the average, I mean, person re because you're freaking out
- 25:59Right.
- 25:59Well, and then you could probably call and probably give them your social insurance number
- 26:03and gun then god knows what.
- 26:05Happens at that point.
- 26:07You know?
- 26:08And is now they've got all your private information, blah blah blah.
- 26:11So it was, you know, and I I and I that has happened not once, but twice to me.
- 26:16Yeah.
- 26:17I I I you are so right.
- 26:19And they're taking 1 of 2 routes.
- 26:21This one is requiring and and they're very, threatening, either at, you know, fear of of
- 26:31legal action or, and sometimes it's, we have your your son or grandson and and they're, you
- 26:38know, we caught them.
- 26:39They're going to jail, etcetera.
- 26:40We could stop this.
- 26:41You know, here's bail, that kind of stuff.
- 26:43And if you're, you know, an elderly remember, especially living a distance away, you might
- 26:47think, oh my gosh.
- 26:48You know, what what can I do to help?
- 26:50You know?
- 26:50And and they're very immediate about a course of action.
- 26:54Either with, like you say, the the private information here in the US would be your Social
- 26:58Security number, that kind of stuff.
- 27:00And then they're developed, then it's, you know, I identity theft, and they're creating
- 27:04credit cards under your name, etcetera, or they pressure people to buy gift cards or to
- 27:10turnover, monetary value I just reading this morning to power companies that's rampant in
- 27:14the wintertime.
- 27:16They they help people over the phone open up a debit card to pay off, an an o outstanding
- 27:25balance on the current bill to avoid your heat being shut off.
- 27:28And if you're a know, a shut and elderly person in a very cold climate, you're thinking, oh my
- 27:32gosh.
- 27:32I I don't want my heat turned off.
- 27:34It's freezing.
- 27:34So they comply with these people.
- 27:36And then they run up 100 of dollars of bills.
- 27:38So it's Yes.
- 27:40These little steps, I think, that we opening emails.
- 27:43Like, I get emails every week that I know are not from the people they portend to be, and
- 27:48there's a very simple video I have online that, that you can by hovering over it with your
- 27:54mouse.
- 27:54You can see who the original identity but but people don't take that simple step because
- 28:00you're in that fear mode.
- 28:03So that's so that's, on your on your sites that's something people can access for
- 28:08security.
- 28:08Do you have courses specific for security on your site right now?
- 28:13I do.
- 28:13In fact, I've I've got, what I consider a great little resource.
- 28:16It's it's a free nine page, document, a PDF book that's called creating safe passwords.
- 28:23And I think that's that's the biggest beast.
- 28:25This, passwords overwhelms to many of It's like, I know I'm supposed to have, you know,
- 28:29more secure passwords.
- 28:30The the the the number one password, I think it's 10 years in a row is p a s s w r d.
- 28:36So followed second by 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.
- 28:39But,
- 28:41I can't believe people will do that.
- 28:43Oh, you yes.
- 28:45Yes.
- 28:45Even businesses I visited there.
- 28:47I I can I log on here in that?
- 28:48Yeah.
- 28:48Here.
- 28:49Here's the password.
- 28:491, 2, 3, 4.
- 28:50I'm really But, the, yeah, the the book is if you are practicing safe tech.com is is the
- 29:00website where you can get that free that free PDF.
- 29:03It'll guide you to some of those videos as well.
- 29:07And you'll be signed up to receive an email once my book practicing safe technically.
- 29:12Awesome.
- 29:12Well, I'm I'm gonna go check it out, just, you know, to anything more around that, I I think
- 29:18would be helpful.
- 29:19So thanks for thanks for sharing that resource.
- 29:22Now I want now I wanna shift our focus back a little bit to, with all the technologies, you
- 29:31know, whether you're somebody doing a, you know, a a project at for school or someone
- 29:35that's an entrepreneur like myself that you know, does do put out stuff weekly, on social
- 29:42and to my list, a lot of videos and those types of things.
- 29:46There's always that that thought in the back of my mind, you know, am I doing it perfect?
- 29:52So I wanted you to speak from your perspective you know, with technology, what are some of the
- 29:57things that, you know, we should keep in mind?
- 29:59Cause I think oftentimes, oh, that's not done right, or are they you know, goodness they're
- 30:03gonna be able to see that I didn't know what to say next or, you know, I didn't seem polished
- 30:08enough for those types of things.
- 30:09Do you have some kind of, you know, guidance that you could give people that might be
- 30:13listening that might have the same kind of concern that I do.
- 30:17Yeah.
- 30:17Yeah.
- 30:18And it's a great question.
- 30:19I think, you know, one of one of my mentors, one of the people I look up to is Jack
- 30:24Canfield.
- 30:25And if if I'm starting a Facebook live or doing a podcast or something else, I might think Wow.
- 30:34Really?
- 30:34You know, I'm gonna step in front of the mic today.
- 30:36I'm gonna I'm gonna be Jack Canfield number 2.
- 30:39And I think that's the biggest mistake right out of the gate is I'm comparing myself to
- 30:44somebody I'm not.
- 30:46And, you know, uh-uh, I think built around your whole brand Roxanne is the most important thing
- 30:52is to be your authentic self.
- 30:54Mhmm.
- 30:55And how can you use technology to share with people your mission, your passion, your person,
- 31:03and That's part of the searching is, like, first identify who you are and what is your
- 31:10unique gift to the world.
- 31:12And then let's use a technology that enables people to see and experience who that is and
- 31:21realize that by me, maybe hemming and hawing or stammering or, you know, coughing on camera or
- 31:30something, is, we're we're not looking for network TV.
- 31:34We're looking for connection.
- 31:36And that's the most important part is whether you're using Instagram or face book or your
- 31:42podcast or whatever it is.
- 31:44Allow people out there to see who you really are because that's what they're drawn to.
- 31:50They're not drawn to perfection.
- 31:52They can turn on network TV if they wanna watch a program.
- 31:55You know, they want they want something meaningful, and I think that's what sometimes
- 32:01is missing.
- 32:01We we we take that step as an entrepreneur to be perfect, but people don't want perfect.
- 32:06People want you and they what you have to bring to the table, if that makes sense.
- 32:12Oh, absolutely.
- 32:13And I think I've gone through, you know, as a new entrepreneur, you're kinda thinking, you
- 32:19know, yeah, and then you're right.
- 32:20You see the Jack Cam fields of the world and you, you know, the Tony Robbins and and even,
- 32:24you know, Steve Harrison, see, you know, I think you think, okay.
- 32:27How am I gonna fit my model in there somewhere?
- 32:29And then you go, I can't do any of those things.
- 32:34Right?
- 32:34Try to do them, but I'll do them poorly.
- 32:36And then you get back to the point, like, like to your point, I am Roxanne.
- 32:40I, you know, I believe in in in people, being themselves that we are not defined from what
- 32:46they we come from.
- 32:47We can create what whatever we want, and we've all been through stuff.
- 32:51But there's a way to get to deal with it in a way that that propels you forward to stay, the
- 32:56best version of yourself.
- 32:57That's my brand.
- 32:58And, you know, obviously, that goes from the spectrum of just mental well-being all the way
- 33:04up to mental health issues.
- 33:06So I think what you're right when you, you know, when you figure out your unique gifts to
- 33:11your point, you're always speaking from your heart and that, you know, I'm I'm consistent to
- 33:16your thinking, when I'm you know, I, you know, if I'm teaching something until I did a talk on
- 33:20time management while I was talking about be be connected to why you do what you do, and then
- 33:26using your time effectively to take care of yourself so that you could focus on your why.
- 33:31So it made it easy because I thought you know, I'm a a business seminar talking about tag
- 33:36management and how am I going to, you know, create create any value that speaks to what's
- 33:42important to my brand and also to to the audience.
- 33:45So I think you're right.
- 33:46And it's something that I think, working with, you know, quantum leap like we did, it really
- 33:52started that process to really, really, not get overwhelmed by everything coming at you.
- 33:59But to really kind of funnel down to, you know, what's that thin edge of the wedge for me.
- 34:04Right?
- 34:04And and that's really about being authentic with you.
- 34:07You love teaching.
- 34:08You love technology.
- 34:09Like, what a, what a great marriage there between both of those because that's what you
- 34:14do out there in the world.
- 34:15And mind is to, you know, teach people that, guess we all have me think of how much time you
- 34:21use your brain, chat, in any different given day.
- 34:24And that's, you know, with caring and kindness for your body and your mind, you know, you're
- 34:29equipped to do anything possible.
- 34:31But we can't do it all and what kind of steps do you take to to kind of inoculate or or care
- 34:37for yourself so that that capacity stays at a 100%.
- 34:41So important.
- 34:42You know, you mentioned, Steve Harrison, one of one of the phrases that resonate in my mind is
- 34:48that and I hear this in all different kinds of ways with entrepreneurs is, you know, people do
- 34:52business with those.
- 34:53They know, they like, and they trust.
- 34:55Mhmm.
- 34:56And and I think that's to me the greatest potential that technology offers.
- 35:01Each of us is that, especially as entrepreneurs, is we can use technology as a
- 35:06way to connect to reach out to 100 and thousands of people and share our passion and
- 35:12share our mission.
- 35:13And for those who resonate with us, they're probably gonna wanna take deeper steps because
- 35:19they find value in what we bring when we're truly authentic.
- 35:22And and that's that potential is not to be everything to everyone, but recognize there's
- 35:27there's somebody out there who would really appreciate what it is you have to offer.
- 35:32And so be that authentic individual and enable them to see the real you and to connect with
- 35:38that real you.
- 35:40I think that's just so important.
- 35:43Absolutely.
- 35:44And, you know, and, you know, with technology, I think you're so right.
- 35:47A lot of people get overwhelmed by technology, and then they're not they they try to they, you
- 35:54know, they try to do too many things, right, like you're you're so right in saying, Pick 1
- 35:58interface to start, maybe 2 at a time.
- 36:01Perfect the first one.
- 36:02You know, you know, this concept that we can multitask.
- 36:05We know how.
- 36:06Horrendously wrong.
- 36:07That is just pick 1 and get a cuss if it's Facebook, you know, get get comfortable with
- 36:11Facebook, every aspect of Facebook.
- 36:13Like, I mean, you can run an entire platform from just Facebook, right, like videos and
- 36:18lives and, you know, chats and all that stuff and then just putting out good content from
- 36:25every kind of learning model.
- 36:26Like, we talked about audio, visual, you know, those types of big text.
- 36:31You can you can build a brand just by using one interface.
- 36:35But I think you're right.
- 36:36When you go on the internet to learn about how to market, talk about that is you you get
- 36:43overwhelmed because there's so much information and you're not sure Where do I go?
- 36:50Like, who who who do I go to?
- 36:52Like, because everybody has perspective.
- 36:54Right?
- 36:55And then to your point, it then it becomes overwhelming, and then you shut you think, oh,
- 36:58I'm not I'll do this next week.
- 37:01Right.
- 37:02Well, you know, it's like walking if any one of us were to walk on a university campus and
- 37:07recognize maybe at that moment in time, there's 562 classes that are being offered right now
- 37:13today.
- 37:14And it'd be like, I mean, YouTube's like that.
- 37:16Right?
- 37:16You just go, oh, I'm gonna pop into this classroom and sit down and, oh, oh, this one's
- 37:21not for me.
- 37:22Let me come over here.
- 37:23That's it's it's why you need, theoretically, you know, a guidance counselor or someone,
- 37:27first of all, who says, okay.
- 37:28What are your goals?
- 37:29What do you wanna accomplish?
- 37:31Alright.
- 37:32So I recommend you take this class and then you take this class next and this class next.
- 37:36And I think that's what's missing sometimes is and this is my the old teacher in me is is is
- 37:41an articulated plan to help you get there.
- 37:44And that's what I offer in in my coursework and in my programs is what I call the scaffolding.
- 37:52That's a big term in in project based education.
- 37:55It's the scaffolding to help you get from point a to point b.
- 37:59With steps along the way instead of saying, okay.
- 38:01Just here.
- 38:02Learn YouTube.
- 38:03Here you go.
- 38:03Here's a here's a box.
- 38:05You know?
- 38:05No.
- 38:06No.
- 38:06No.
- 38:06We as humans don't learn like that.
- 38:08Very few of us do.
- 38:08There are some who could just take it and run, but most of us need the the the progress along
- 38:14the way like you suggest.
- 38:16Mhmm.
- 38:16Absolutely.
- 38:17I I would definitely agree.
- 38:19So for for people wanting to connect with you and to Tell them where they can reach you and
- 38:28your websites where they can go now you said you have 55, platforms.
- 38:34So I would say the main platform where they can go to and if there's, what if they're I don't
- 38:39know about, you know, if there's one to one coaching or group coaching that you offer that
- 38:44So please let them know where they can get a hold of you.
- 38:47Sure.
- 38:48Yeah.
- 38:48In fact, I do offer I'm launching a brand new, one on one tech coaching program in the New
- 38:53Year as well.
- 38:55Along with group coaching.
- 38:56I do some, live hands on workshops and video production.
- 38:59That was what I taught for 17 years.
- 39:02As well as the my general technology program.
- 39:04So, a couple different ways I would recommend is if you go to tech tech
- 39:10successclub.comtechsuccessclub.com.
- 39:15You can sign up and and you'll get an email with some regular technology updates.
- 39:20My little short videos on on a variety of different technologies, and and you'll be made
- 39:23aware when the tech success club actually launches as It's kind of a membership program
- 39:28to learn new technologies each month.
- 39:30And the other is the the the practicing safe tech dotcom for for safety and insecurity.
- 39:39Those are the two outlets that I think most people would find lots of value.
- 39:42My regular website is your technology tutor.com.
- 39:47If you're a speaker author or coach or or someone looking for a presenter, you know, with
- 39:52your organization.
- 39:53I speak on a variety of topics.
- 39:55I'm happy to engage in conversation there, but there's a there's some ways check out what I
- 40:00have to offer and and, you know, if if you find me an authentic fit to what you're doing, I'm
- 40:04happy to have a conversation.
- 40:05So otherwise, I hope that my material out there helped you you know, use technology more
- 40:11successfully.
- 40:12So, you know, you've taught me and reinforced some of the things that I already knew, but you
- 40:17know, thank you again for sharing that, you know, just take your time and take one step,
- 40:23right, and don't get overwhelmed.
- 40:25Because I really look at how far I've come in in and I'm not still not a techie.
- 40:30I have a VA that does some things for me and those types of things, but, just, I but but now
- 40:37compared to the, you know, 2015 Roxanne, would say I'm a bit of a techie now compared to what
- 40:43I was.
- 40:44Nice.
- 40:44Nice.
- 40:45You know, I think that's an important piece of it as well, Roxanne, is that at the end of the
- 40:49day or or the end of an hour when when you've made even an incremental bit of progress, go go
- 40:55to the bathroom and high 5 yourself in the mirror is like, I think we as humans, we need
- 40:59to celebrate even small successes and and continue to move forward.
- 41:03Absolutely.
- 41:03I'm gonna remember doing that then because I if I if I would have sit down and think of what
- 41:07I've taught myself or, with minimal instruction at times, in technology since I've started even
- 41:14this year, with my, you know, podcasts and stuff like that, I've I've, you know, I've
- 41:18learned a lot So I'm gonna check out your your success club because I think it would be
- 41:24something that would be beneficial to me.
- 41:26So thank you for taking the time, to be here with us today.
- 41:30I'm hoping I'm thinking your your California weather's a lot better than ours.
- 41:33We're pretty cold up here in Niagara Falls.
- 41:37So and I hope to reconnect with our group pretty soon.
- 41:40So for everyone, you know, what I would suggest is, to Chad's point, Technology is there, but
- 41:48remember to stay connected to why you're doing what you're doing.
- 41:52What is the, you know, what is the message that you're trying to get across?
- 41:56And and how are people experiencing that with you and figuring out that is most important.
- 42:01And then from that point, then figuring out maybe one platform that might be worked for you
- 42:06and starting with that.
- 42:07So if you're wanting more information on me, you can go to
