0:18
Speaker 1: Year's accomplishing all your New Year's resolutions and staying healthy.
0:28
Speaker 1: Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast. You know what
0:30
Speaker 1: time it is, Mitchell, it's the Super Bowl. Well, I
0:33
Speaker 1: guess the week before the Super Bowl. And it's still
0:36
Speaker 1: a lot of action going on. We know what the teams,
0:38
Speaker 1: we know what they got going on. No billboard, no
0:41
Speaker 1: bulletin board material yet. But there's some coaching hires and
0:45
Speaker 1: some fires and some people getting picked up that you
0:48
Speaker 1: wasn't expected. Schwartz's pissed, Mitchell. What's you thinking, Richard. There's
0:51
Speaker 1: a lot of action.
0:52
Speaker 2: Even though this is technically a bye week, the week
0:55
Speaker 2: before Super Bowl week, there's still a lot of action
0:58
Speaker 2: going on in the NFL. One of the big things
1:01
Speaker 2: right around Super Bowl time is the Hall of Fame,
1:04
Speaker 2: and Richard, we got caught with an absolute right hook
1:09
Speaker 2: of news this week. How in the world is a
1:13
Speaker 2: guy like Bill Belichick not a first ballot Hall of Famer.
1:18
Speaker 1: I'll start there, Mitchell. You want to know how you
1:21
Speaker 1: you want to know how you use lose credibility in
1:25
Speaker 1: an established organization, team or anything. You watch a slam
1:31
Speaker 1: dunk candidate a no brain or answer and it go unanswered.
1:38
Speaker 1: If you don't want to listen to me, just listen
1:40
Speaker 1: to what Tom Brady said. He said he doesn't understand
1:43
Speaker 1: if he's not a first ballot Hall of Famer, then
1:46
Speaker 1: really there's no coach that should ever be a first
1:48
Speaker 1: ballot Hall of Famer. And that's true. Now, I have
1:52
Speaker 1: a lot of respect for the Hall of Fame and
1:53
Speaker 1: the hard job that all the voters have and all
1:55
Speaker 1: of that, but this wasn't a hard job. This wasn't
1:59
Speaker 1: a hard job at all. This is Hey. Whether you
2:03
Speaker 1: think he's the greatest coach all the time or not,
2:05
Speaker 1: whatever you can, you can argue that with somebody else.
2:09
Speaker 1: One of the greatest coaches to ever play coach the
2:11
Speaker 1: game a lot of Super Bowls. I think he got
2:15
Speaker 1: eight between playing, between coordinating and head coaching. Between the
2:21
Speaker 1: Giants and the New England Patriots earned first ballot Hall
2:25
Speaker 1: of Fame earned, not speculative, not hey, I think he
2:30
Speaker 1: should one hundred percent sure, first ballot Hall of Famer. Now,
2:34
Speaker 1: when you don't do it, and then there's conjecture and
2:39
Speaker 1: conversation about what Bill Pollian said or may have not said,
2:43
Speaker 1: because there's you know, we don't know what's happening behind
2:46
Speaker 1: closed doors. There's rumors both ways he said something, and
2:49
Speaker 1: then they're saying he didn't say anything, and he voted
2:51
Speaker 1: for Bill Belichick. So I don't know. I think this
2:56
Speaker 1: is what happens when you don't have a transparent process.
2:59
Speaker 1: And you don't have a transparent process, there's no accountability.
3:02
Speaker 1: If you had accountability in this process, I don't think.
3:05
Speaker 1: I think this is a slam duck and nobody's talking
3:07
Speaker 1: about it. But when you can hide behind a vote,
3:10
Speaker 1: it makes it really tough. It makes it really tough
3:13
Speaker 1: because you you won't ever be able to get to
3:16
Speaker 1: the bottom of who voted for him and who didn't
3:17
Speaker 1: vote for him. If it's true. Now we may get
3:21
Speaker 1: to next week and Bill Belichick be a Hall of
3:23
Speaker 1: Famer and all this with some made up rumor and
3:26
Speaker 1: somebody got misinformation and all this, and I'm hoping that's
3:29
Speaker 1: what the case is, because if that's not, I don't know,
3:35
Speaker 1: I don't know how you you can trust this process
3:37
Speaker 1: going forward. If somebody with his resume as a coach
3:45
Speaker 1: and a coordinator isn't an NFL Hall of Famer on
3:49
Speaker 1: the first ballot that he's on, it it's hard to
3:52
Speaker 1: debate that anybody is now because the equivalent is putting
3:58
Speaker 1: Tom Brady on the ballot and not say and he's
4:00
Speaker 1: the first ballot Hall of Famer. That's the level of
4:02
Speaker 1: insanity this is. And if you don't believe me, I mean,
4:04
Speaker 1: that's what it is like if you put Tom Brady
4:08
Speaker 1: on the ballot and you said, hey, Tom Brady didn't
4:11
Speaker 1: get the forty votes, what are we what are we
4:16
Speaker 1: voting for? And I understand people are saying, oh man,
4:22
Speaker 1: the deflate gate that this that that I don't know
4:26
Speaker 1: if that it's the Barry Bonds baseball thing for me
4:31
Speaker 1: hall of famer, Like you could say, you know how
4:34
Speaker 1: many people probably you know, took enhancements in these sports.
4:40
Speaker 1: Those enhancements don't help you hit that little ball. I
4:42
Speaker 1: guarantee you there's no enhancement that can increase your speeture,
4:46
Speaker 1: your hand eye coordination enough, because if it did, the
4:49
Speaker 1: baddened percentages would be crazy out of this world. But
4:52
Speaker 1: the guy was an incredible ball player. This is an
4:54
Speaker 1: incredible coach, and I don't think the things in the
4:57
Speaker 1: speculation should ever diminish that in And it almost seems
5:01
Speaker 1: like personal agendas are getting in a way of the
5:05
Speaker 1: facts and objective opinions about the greatest sport in the
5:09
Speaker 1: national I mean, the greatest sport in America. And I
5:12
Speaker 1: just don't like that, Mitchell. I don't like it. I
5:13
Speaker 1: don't like human emotion getting between fact. Like Bill Belichick's
5:21
Speaker 1: the first ballot Hall of Famer, that's a fact. If
5:25
Speaker 1: that's not a fact, the process has to be changed
5:29
Speaker 1: because it's clearly broken. It's clearly broken. If that's not
5:32
Speaker 1: a fact, I'll.
5:34
Speaker 2: Take it a step further. Richard, I think it's a
5:36
Speaker 2: complete and utter joke. I think it discredits the Hall
5:39
Speaker 2: of Fame. This guy, Bill Belichick. He is the Michael
5:43
Speaker 2: Jordan of coaches. I mean, whether you think he's the
5:46
Speaker 2: greatest of all time or not, he's certainly in that discussion.
5:50
Speaker 2: And if any person coach player, executive, et cetera. Is
5:55
Speaker 2: in that discussion as one of the greatest of all time.
6:00
Speaker 2: Deserve to be first ballot, and that's what Bill Belichick is.
6:03
Speaker 2: You gotta wonder, you know, off his riff with the
6:06
Speaker 2: media of how he handled his press conferences with the media,
6:10
Speaker 2: had anything to do with this. You gotta wonder if
6:12
Speaker 2: these voters kept him off the first ballot out of spite.
6:15
Speaker 2: You know, obviously he's coaching at UNC now. You know,
6:19
Speaker 2: he didn't retire and sale off into the sunset. He
6:23
Speaker 2: chose to go go keep coaching and chase a new challenge. Richard,
6:27
Speaker 2: this is a complete another joke.
6:30
Speaker 1: But even if that's the case, even if you say, hey,
6:33
Speaker 1: he was abrasive, he was this, that would be okay.
6:35
Speaker 1: If there was like a fringe, if he's a fringe
6:38
Speaker 1: Hall of Famer, If he's a fringe Hall of Fame coaching,
6:40
Speaker 1: you say he doesn't deserve the first ballot, hits a fringe.
6:44
Speaker 1: This man got eight Super Bowls to his name. That's
6:48
Speaker 1: not a friend. That's not a debatable point. This is
6:51
Speaker 1: not a debatable topic. It's so it's personal opinion or
6:55
Speaker 1: not like it's it's it is a sun hot. Guess
6:59
Speaker 1: it's that's not a debatable thing. It's it's it's one
7:03
Speaker 1: of those things. Is the sky up or down? Like
7:06
Speaker 1: it should not be up for debate. It should not
7:08
Speaker 1: be up for for somebody's emotional emotions to change an outcome.
7:16
Speaker 1: If the media hated Bill Belichick does not change the
7:18
Speaker 1: fact he's a Hall of Fame coach. Now did they
7:22
Speaker 1: do that? To to uh to one hundred percent? To
7:26
Speaker 1: was probably supposed to be a first battle of Hall
7:28
Speaker 1: of Famer. His numbers say that his rankings on a
7:31
Speaker 1: number of lists ay first ballot Hall of Famer. They
7:33
Speaker 1: punished them, said nope, we're not gonna do it. Cool.
7:37
Speaker 1: I guess you know what I mean. You gotta be
7:39
Speaker 1: good to the media, you gotta be nice to people,
7:41
Speaker 1: you gotta have those conversations. But this guy just doesn't
7:49
Speaker 1: feel like this is right. It almost if this doesn't
7:54
Speaker 1: change something in a big way. And I know the
7:56
Speaker 1: Hall of Fame came out and made a statement, but
8:00
Speaker 1: to this point, Hall of Fame, if if this guy
8:04
Speaker 1: doesn't go on the first ballot, I mean, the the
8:07
Speaker 1: the integrity is in question, and you never want to
8:10
Speaker 1: say that about something that's lasted as long as the
8:13
Speaker 1: Hall of Fame. But is it emotions now, Like if
8:18
Speaker 1: you if you hurt my feelings, I'm not going to
8:20
Speaker 1: vote for you. If if if you hurt my feelings personally,
8:25
Speaker 1: those people can't like that can't be the reason he's
8:28
Speaker 1: in not in, Like if there's a legitimate, uh topic,
8:35
Speaker 1: that's that's beyond debate, indisputable fact that you say, hey,
8:41
Speaker 1: this happened, this happened, this happened, which means he does
8:45
Speaker 1: not deserve to be in the Hall of Fame on
8:48
Speaker 1: the first ballot because of these things. And that's a
8:51
Speaker 1: strong argument that hey, and I don't I know the
8:54
Speaker 1: deflate gate and the spygate and all that that that
8:58
Speaker 1: even if you said, hey, we'll take way those two
9:00
Speaker 1: super Bowls, he's still first sins. It's still first ballot,
9:06
Speaker 1: Like I just don't. That's where it's like, I hear
9:10
Speaker 1: you get cool make those arguments. It's still if you
9:13
Speaker 1: took those away, it does not change his resume to
9:16
Speaker 1: the point he's not a first ballot Hall of Fame coach.
9:18
Speaker 1: So it's frustrating. Obviously, Tom hears it. The Hall of
9:23
Speaker 1: Fame reached out, they didn't really say much. But that's
9:26
Speaker 1: all I got to say about it. Man, That's that's ridiculous.
9:28
Speaker 1: Hopefully they do the right thing and and and make
9:30
Speaker 1: this right. Hopefully this is all just conjecture and rumors
9:33
Speaker 1: and when the when the class comes out Bill Belas checks.
9:37
Speaker 2: On, that would be a pretty wild pr move on
9:40
Speaker 2: their part. But you know what, Richard, at bottom line,
9:42
Speaker 2: like you said, I would love to know who voted no,
9:45
Speaker 2: and I would need an explanation as to why, because
9:47
Speaker 2: this one is just making no sense whatsoever. Richard, we
9:52
Speaker 2: got some news on the coaching circuit. Let's start in Cleveland.
9:56
Speaker 2: Todd Monkin, the old old c at Baltimore, takes the job.
9:59
Speaker 2: And I know, you know, he has certainly been a
10:02
Speaker 2: name a candidate for a lot of different jobs. He
10:04
Speaker 2: ultimately ends up in Cleveland. But the bigger story here
10:07
Speaker 2: is a guy like Jim Schwartz, who is you know,
10:10
Speaker 2: truly wants to be there. Where's his emotion on his
10:14
Speaker 2: sleeve week in and week out.
10:16
Speaker 1: Led one of the top.
10:17
Speaker 2: Defenses in this league, the only bright spot of the
10:20
Speaker 2: Cleveland Browns team for the last few years, does not
10:23
Speaker 2: get the job.
10:24
Speaker 1: Richard.
10:24
Speaker 2: Let's start with Jim Schwartz not receiving the job, and
10:28
Speaker 2: then we can talk a little bit more about Todd Monkin.
10:30
Speaker 2: Your initial thoughts when you heard Jim Schwartz was not
10:33
Speaker 2: the new head coach of the Cleveland Browns insane.
10:37
Speaker 1: Insane. With the amount of people that took their name
10:41
Speaker 1: out of the hat for this job, including Yudinsky who
10:47
Speaker 1: just pulled his name out, it seemed like Schwartz is
10:51
Speaker 1: to lose the way his players speak about him, like
10:54
Speaker 1: those are things you can't measure the respect and regard
10:58
Speaker 1: that your best players have for And I'm talking about
11:01
Speaker 1: Miles Garrett, I'm talking about Denzel Ward. I'm talking about
11:03
Speaker 1: the defensive players that are foundational pieces to this organization.
11:10
Speaker 1: I think they took him for granted, and I think
11:12
Speaker 1: he feels that way. I don't know him, I didn't
11:15
Speaker 1: have any conversations with him, but I think he feels
11:17
Speaker 1: that way because when you have a top five defense,
11:22
Speaker 1: top ten defense just about every year, regardless of how
11:25
Speaker 1: your out, your offense competes, regardless of how how they
11:30
Speaker 1: play and how your defense shows up their defenses, is
11:34
Speaker 1: giving him a chance and for them to basically treat
11:39
Speaker 1: him like an afterthought and say Hey, we know what
11:43
Speaker 1: we got with you, but we want to go out
11:45
Speaker 1: there and get something new. We want to get an
11:47
Speaker 1: offensive guy. Couldn't he hire an offensive guy like Todd
11:53
Speaker 1: Munkin was on his way to be the OC for
11:56
Speaker 1: the Giants if you hire Swarts, like, can you can
12:01
Speaker 1: easily hired an offensive coordinator to do this? Like if
12:06
Speaker 1: you're saying this, it's almost like a damning statement against
12:11
Speaker 1: Schwartz's ability to lead men. And as an organization, you're
12:15
Speaker 1: saying you don't think he can do it. And we've
12:18
Speaker 1: heard all these rumors about the Browns process, and they
12:21
Speaker 1: got all these psychological tests and written tests and all
12:24
Speaker 1: these things that they want to use all this information
12:27
Speaker 1: that they're compilling to evaluate these candidates. But you can
12:32
Speaker 1: evaluate Sworts without all that. He's been there long enough
12:36
Speaker 1: for you to evaluate him. And what you're saying is
12:39
Speaker 1: he's not the guy. I think if Swartz goes to
12:43
Speaker 1: another team, a contender who's out of a decordinator right now,
12:47
Speaker 1: I think he has a head coach job within the
12:50
Speaker 1: next two years. And by a contender, I'm thinking of
12:54
Speaker 1: the San Francisco forty nine ers, and I would imagine
12:56
Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan is on the phone right now. Whatever you need, Hey,
13:03
Speaker 1: you don't want to you don't want to be sitting
13:05
Speaker 1: in the AFC North in the freezing cold in November,
13:08
Speaker 1: then come over here to the San Francisco forty nine ers.
13:11
Speaker 1: You don't want to have your team treat you like
13:15
Speaker 1: you don't deserve to be treated, treat you like an
13:17
Speaker 1: after thought thing. Come over here to the San Francisco
13:19
Speaker 1: forty nine. I know Kyle Shanahan is gonna make that call.
13:21
Speaker 1: He has a tremendous amount of respect. And after losing
13:24
Speaker 1: Robert Sala to a head coaching job and showing a
13:27
Speaker 1: pipeline for his decoordinators to be elevated to head coaching job.
13:31
Speaker 1: You talk about Demiko Ryan, you talk about Robert Sala twice,
13:37
Speaker 1: and even even my guy Jeff Hafley, who was on
13:39
Speaker 1: the staff in eighteen like is now a head coach
13:42
Speaker 1: right now for the Miami Dolphins. So there's so much there.
13:46
Speaker 1: If Jim Schwartz everyone wants to coach and be a
13:49
Speaker 1: head coach again, now sure he has to come in
13:52
Speaker 1: and understand and figure it out. You know, what works
13:54
Speaker 1: for his family, what works for for his you know,
13:57
Speaker 1: do they do their personalities work? But and all that
14:03
Speaker 1: to say, does Cleveland even let him out? It's an
14:05
Speaker 1: ugly situation, like do you keep a coach who doesn't
14:09
Speaker 1: want to be there? Like are you going to force him?
14:11
Speaker 1: Because he said, Hey, if they don't give me the
14:13
Speaker 1: head coaching job, I'm out. And once you say that,
14:16
Speaker 1: and some guys are stubborn to that point, like he
14:18
Speaker 1: feels disrespected. And do you want a guy in there
14:20
Speaker 1: that's sitting there feeling that way in that building, like
14:23
Speaker 1: feeling like he's been undercut, like he's been undersold, like
14:26
Speaker 1: he's been underappreciated. I don't think you do. And to
14:30
Speaker 1: hire somebody within the division, it's probably another slap in
14:34
Speaker 1: the face for him. You know, that's a guy that's
14:36
Speaker 1: an offensive coordinator he's been game planning against for years,
14:41
Speaker 1: Like that's almost a rival, and you hire a rival
14:46
Speaker 1: above me, over me, Like I'm not working with that guy.
14:49
Speaker 1: And that's what it seems like he's saying. And so
14:51
Speaker 1: I I don't like this. I really don't like this
14:55
Speaker 1: for him. I don't like and I don't know if
14:57
Speaker 1: they're gonna let him out, and that's gonna create another
14:59
Speaker 1: issue for the offseason, like, well, I'm sure we're gonna
15:03
Speaker 1: talk about your door. We gotta talk about their whole
15:05
Speaker 1: quarterback situation. Now it's your door's name to the Pro Bowl.
15:07
Speaker 1: So now you got a Pro Bowl quarterback, Pro Bowl
15:09
Speaker 1: rookie quarterback returning for Todd munkt And you can't say
15:14
Speaker 1: it's gonna be a quarterback competition, can you? With with
15:17
Speaker 1: Dylan Gabriel and the Pro Bowler Shador Sanders, is that
15:19
Speaker 1: gonna be a quarterback competition? I doubt it. What is
15:22
Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson gonna do? That's what Todd Munkin's walking into. Like,
15:26
Speaker 1: Deshaun Watson's making a lot of money and he's he's
15:29
Speaker 1: gonna be healthy. It's gonna be a healthy probably healthy
15:31
Speaker 1: scratch every week. Or do you think he can play?
15:34
Speaker 1: What happens if Deshaun Watson goes into practice and he's
15:37
Speaker 1: healthy and he starts to play like the old Deshaun
15:39
Speaker 1: Watson and you got him for fifty million dollars guaranteed
15:43
Speaker 1: and you can't get rid of then what then? What
15:46
Speaker 1: do you do? You know, those are the conversation that's
15:48
Speaker 1: gonna be had. But it just seems like this decision
15:52
Speaker 1: injects dysfunction into the Browns. It injects dysfunction that wasn't
15:57
Speaker 1: necessarily there. They've been so focused on outside candidates. They
16:03
Speaker 1: did not appreciate Jim Swartz. And I'm it seems like
16:06
Speaker 1: he feels hurt by that. And we'll see if they
16:09
Speaker 1: can repair that relationship. I don't think they can.
16:12
Speaker 2: He deserves to feel hurt, Richard, This was a guy,
16:15
Speaker 2: Like you said, there was numerous candidates that just flat
16:19
Speaker 2: out removed their hat from the ring. They didn't want
16:21
Speaker 2: any part of being in Cleveland. This was the guy
16:23
Speaker 2: who was already there, who was successful while he was there.
16:26
Speaker 2: He was the only bright spot of this team. That
16:28
Speaker 2: defense was and he led that. And he's a fiery guy.
16:32
Speaker 2: He's a Midwestern guy, Richard. He coached in Detroit. He
16:34
Speaker 2: was a bright spot in Detroit. He helped at least
16:37
Speaker 2: make the Detroit Lions competitive. I could see him doing
16:40
Speaker 2: the same thing with Cleveland. You know, a feisty, fiery defense.
16:44
Speaker 2: He'll figure out the offense. Like you said, Richard, whatever
16:47
Speaker 2: the Cleveland Browns front office is doing, whatever, analytics, whatever
16:51
Speaker 2: they're doing to come up with these decisions from all
16:54
Speaker 2: the personnel standpoint, from a coaching standpoint, they just need
16:58
Speaker 2: to pick it up and huck it out the window
17:00
Speaker 2: because it's not working.
17:01
Speaker 1: Man.
17:02
Speaker 2: I mean, this is the same franchise that let go
17:04
Speaker 2: with Baker Mayfield. They've picked them number one overall just
17:07
Speaker 2: to let them, let them walk, and then they go
17:09
Speaker 2: out and basically mortgage their entire future for Deshaun Watson,
17:14
Speaker 2: and we don't even need to talk about what he
17:16
Speaker 2: was doing off the field. Reality is is that Baker
17:20
Speaker 2: Mayfield was more capable and another guy that absolutely wanted
17:25
Speaker 2: to be in Cleveland, and they just said, yeah, see
17:27
Speaker 2: you later, We're gonna go with the Shawn Watson. When
17:31
Speaker 2: you're an organization that struggled as much as the Cleveland
17:33
Speaker 2: Drownds has over the last several decades, I feel like
17:37
Speaker 2: you should probably go with the guy that really truly
17:40
Speaker 2: wants to be there and wants to change that culture.
17:43
Speaker 2: That's just my opinion.
17:45
Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a guy like some coaches just look the part,
17:49
Speaker 1: and Swartz looks the part like rugged now do in
17:53
Speaker 1: the code. He knows the environment, knows the city, knows
17:55
Speaker 1: what's going on, knows these players, knows a heartbeat of
17:58
Speaker 1: the team. No, that's a feel. Maybe he's little abrasive.
18:00
Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm not in that building. I don't
18:02
Speaker 1: know how those.
18:02
Speaker 2: Gas try to fight. He tried to fight Jim Harball
18:05
Speaker 2: when he was with the Detroit Lions.
18:08
Speaker 1: He's definitely so I'm with that. I'm with that. I'm
18:12
Speaker 1: with that. I mean, you look at Robert Saler. He
18:14
Speaker 1: was ready to fight Liam Callin after that game. I mean,
18:17
Speaker 1: it gets hot. People take this game series. This is
18:19
Speaker 1: real life. But he's been there, he's shown you success.
18:25
Speaker 1: And you talking about analytics Mitchell. In twenty twenty four,
18:27
Speaker 1: they won three games. This year they won five. I
18:31
Speaker 1: don't know if analytics is the answer out there. Sometimes
18:34
Speaker 1: you need to go old school ball coach. Sure, the
18:36
Speaker 1: last year before they won eleven games somehow, but like,
18:40
Speaker 1: you have to figure this thing out. And I don't
18:43
Speaker 1: know if this decision does anything but piss off your players.
18:48
Speaker 1: I'm sure your fan base is indifferent. But you lose
18:52
Speaker 1: your decordinator, You're you're behind eight ball. It looks like
18:55
Speaker 1: you're gonna lose your special teams coordinator to the Rams. Like,
19:01
Speaker 1: I'm not sure if this decision elevates the Cleveland Browns.
19:05
Speaker 1: And this has nothing to do with Todd Munkin and
19:07
Speaker 1: his abilities, but has more to do with the guy
19:11
Speaker 1: you may be losing because of the decision you made.
19:13
Speaker 1: It's almost a subtraction by addition. I know you hear
19:17
Speaker 1: it the other way, but this is what I'm saying.
19:19
Speaker 1: So we'll see.
19:22
Speaker 2: Jim Schwartz and San Francisco sounds really, really good, and
19:26
Speaker 2: I tell you what, San fran would be blessed to
19:29
Speaker 2: have him as their DC. Let's stick with the Cleveland
19:32
Speaker 2: Browns a little bit more here. Shad Or Sanders, you
19:33
Speaker 2: talked about it, got named of the Pro Bowl. I
19:36
Speaker 2: think he was like the seventh or eighth alternate. Bigger
19:39
Speaker 2: discussion here. I know you're a huge fan of Dion Sanders.
19:43
Speaker 2: You have a lot of respect for Shaudor, and you've
19:45
Speaker 2: spoken so highly over it about him over the last
19:47
Speaker 2: couple of years. I mean, realistically, I don't even know
19:50
Speaker 2: if we need to go into it. Should or doesn't
19:52
Speaker 2: deserve to be a pro bowler. I think that's a
19:54
Speaker 2: statement of fact. The bigger question here, Richard is we
19:58
Speaker 2: talked about the credibility of the Hall of Fame. I mean,
20:02
Speaker 2: what does this do for the credibility of the Pro Bowl.
20:05
Speaker 1: Well, I mean, the Pro Bowl has no credibility as is,
20:09
Speaker 1: you know. But you know, I'm happy for Shador, you know,
20:12
Speaker 1: I think this will be good for the Pro Bowl
20:14
Speaker 1: because of the tension and eyeballs that Shardor brings. People
20:19
Speaker 1: will watch because he's playing. A lot more people would
20:21
Speaker 1: watch because Schador is playing than they would watch if
20:23
Speaker 1: he didn't play. And that's just the fact of the matter.
20:26
Speaker 1: You know, he has star power, he has a lord,
20:28
Speaker 1: he has or all those things. So it's good in
20:31
Speaker 1: that respect. But I think, in my opinion, something needs
20:35
Speaker 1: to change in terms of being credited with a Pro
20:40
Speaker 1: Bowl season when you're not voted on the initial ballot,
20:44
Speaker 1: I think if that changed, I think that's fair. Like
20:48
Speaker 1: instead of everybody, hey, no matter if you're the seventh
20:50
Speaker 1: alternate or tenth alternate, it just says Pro Bowl. Like,
20:54
Speaker 1: I think it would lower a lot of guys Pro
20:55
Speaker 1: Bowl numbers because alternates don't count against the actual like
21:02
Speaker 1: Accolade Hall of Fame. Now, I can't say Schador doesn't
21:05
Speaker 1: need to deserve to play because he was voted by
21:08
Speaker 1: both the players and however shook out. He go into
21:11
Speaker 1: the game. So I could say a lot of things
21:14
Speaker 1: didn't deserve to happen. I don't know if he deserved
21:15
Speaker 1: to go in the fifth round. I don't know if
21:17
Speaker 1: a lot of these guys deserve to be picked over him,
21:19
Speaker 1: you know. But it is what it is. It's how
21:21
Speaker 1: it shook out. And he's in the Pro Bowl game,
21:24
Speaker 1: and it's gonna make it a more fun game and
21:25
Speaker 1: a more entertaining game to watch because he's in it.
21:27
Speaker 1: More people are gonna watch, more people are gonna gonna
21:30
Speaker 1: tune into that game because he's playing. Because he's a
21:33
Speaker 1: polarizing figure in the National Football League, just like his dad,
21:35
Speaker 1: the great, late the great Dion Sanders prime time, he's
21:39
Speaker 1: a polarizing Either you love him with all your heart
21:42
Speaker 1: or you don't care for him. I mean, I feel
21:44
Speaker 1: like I'm that way. You know, you either love me
21:47
Speaker 1: or you leave me alone. But but it is what
21:52
Speaker 1: it is. I think if they if they stopped giving
21:55
Speaker 1: credit for alternates, like let him play. Hey, that's how
22:00
Speaker 1: it shook out. It went down the list, he's the
22:02
Speaker 1: one that wanted to play. I think that would would
22:05
Speaker 1: help the Pro Bowl and it's and its validity and
22:08
Speaker 1: its integrity and the way people see it, because the
22:13
Speaker 1: guys that got voted on the initial ballot are considered
22:16
Speaker 1: Pro Bowlers for the year now whether they play or
22:18
Speaker 1: don't play. Now, if they don't play and everybody else plays,
22:21
Speaker 1: then cool. Those guys get get a chance, get the honor,
22:24
Speaker 1: get the money that comes with playing in the game,
22:26
Speaker 1: get to go out there and have fun. But it
22:27
Speaker 1: does not count as a Pro Bowl because you did
22:30
Speaker 1: not get it. You did not get it on the
22:32
Speaker 1: initial ballot, which is the only way you're named a
22:35
Speaker 1: Pro Bowler in it. In the old ways, you know,
22:38
Speaker 1: it's not hey who played in the Pro Bowl, it's
22:40
Speaker 1: who was named to the Pro Bowl. And so I
22:42
Speaker 1: think that's the change that that that would help the
22:45
Speaker 1: credibility of the Pro Bowl. Allow whoever to play if
22:49
Speaker 1: guys back out. You need guys to play in the game,
22:52
Speaker 1: but if you're giving them the same accolade that you're
22:55
Speaker 1: giving the guy that was voted on in the in
22:58
Speaker 1: the first place, I think then it loses the lord,
23:02
Speaker 1: it loses it's it's it's power, it loses its substance.
23:05
Speaker 1: And because then you got one hundred Pro Bowlers in
23:09
Speaker 1: a year, you know what I mean? You got, you got,
23:11
Speaker 1: you got sixty seventy Pro bowlers, and you're like, it
23:14
Speaker 1: wasn't that many Pro Bowl players in the National Football League.
23:16
Speaker 1: It's it's it's it becomes participation exactly.
23:20
Speaker 2: And to that point, I mean, I feel like your
23:24
Speaker 2: line of thinking is the way it should be.
23:26
Speaker 1: It's so obvious.
23:27
Speaker 2: You name a Pro Bowl team, you give those accolades
23:30
Speaker 2: to the players, much like they do with the All
23:32
Speaker 2: Pro team, and if they don't show up, so be it.
23:35
Speaker 2: That's their decision. That being said, do you ever think,
23:39
Speaker 2: just for the sake of keeping the Pro Bowl accolade
23:42
Speaker 2: at a high, high regard, do you ever think they're
23:44
Speaker 2: just gonna scrap the Pro Bowl? Do you ever think
23:47
Speaker 2: they would just go to that line of thinking, these
23:49
Speaker 2: are our Pro Bowlers and that's it.
23:52
Speaker 1: No, because because it'd be the only major sport without
23:55
Speaker 1: an all Star game, and I think that matters to people,
23:58
Speaker 1: you know, I pick. I think the the optic of
24:04
Speaker 1: seeing you know, the best players in the National Football
24:08
Speaker 1: League on a field together, competing against each other, is
24:12
Speaker 1: an optic the NFL wants to keep going. Now, it's
24:15
Speaker 1: not necessarily football, but with with the the increased value
24:20
Speaker 1: of flag football because of the Olympics and all that.
24:23
Speaker 1: Then it's it's still something people will will will tune
24:26
Speaker 1: into and be entertained to see their favorite players to
24:28
Speaker 1: play one more football game and see them in a
24:30
Speaker 1: different element, having fun and doing things. And so I
24:34
Speaker 1: don't think they'll ever do that because it takes away
24:36
Speaker 1: a fan experience and in a way for fans to
24:40
Speaker 1: continue to interact with players in an environment that's different
24:44
Speaker 1: than what you would expect. And I think the league
24:46
Speaker 1: values that and players value that, and they and players
24:49
Speaker 1: value being being treated like a pro bowler. You know,
24:52
Speaker 1: there's certain activities during the week, there's certain things you
24:55
Speaker 1: get to do when you get to take your family
24:57
Speaker 1: and your kids, and so I don't think they'll do
24:59
Speaker 1: away with because then it's just an emptiness, you know.
25:01
Speaker 1: It almost gives the league a bit of a black
25:06
Speaker 1: eye when talking about these these games, because I imagine
25:09
Speaker 1: an NBA without the All Star Game. You'd be like, wait,
25:12
Speaker 1: where's the All Star Game? Like, sure, these guys don't
25:15
Speaker 1: play and you're changing it up and doing all these
25:16
Speaker 1: cool things, but if they just took the game away,
25:19
Speaker 1: you'd be like, I don't know if that's the right,
25:20
Speaker 1: call fair enough.
25:22
Speaker 2: We'll see how it all pans out. I mean, they
25:25
Speaker 2: are trying to keep it fun. They are trying to
25:27
Speaker 2: keep it cool. I think one idea, Richard, throw an
25:29
Speaker 2: average Joe out there for flag football. Let's you know,
25:32
Speaker 2: all these guys that think they can play in the NFL,
25:34
Speaker 2: Let's see how they can really fare and flag football.
25:37
Speaker 2: That's an idea for you. If you want to bring
25:39
Speaker 2: some pros v Joe's, let's talk about some more coaching hires.
25:43
Speaker 2: This was an active week. We saw Joe Brady go
25:46
Speaker 2: to the Bills, you know, get promoted, Steelers signing Mike
25:50
Speaker 2: McCarthy a bit of a head scratcher. Surprise, Jesse Mentor
25:54
Speaker 2: goes to the Ravens, and then finally the big splash,
25:57
Speaker 2: John Harbaugh goes to the Giants. Which one of these
26:00
Speaker 2: stood out the most to you?
26:03
Speaker 1: I think Mike McCarthy. I mean, it's great for him.
26:05
Speaker 1: He grew up as a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
26:09
Speaker 1: I think this was the greatest chance that they bring
26:13
Speaker 1: back Aaron Rodgers, as if they hired Mike McCarthy, and
26:16
Speaker 1: not that Aaron Rodgers is going to be playing for
26:18
Speaker 1: much longer. I don't think he but I think he
26:20
Speaker 1: plays for another year because of Mike McCarthy and a
26:22
Speaker 1: familiarity there. Obviously, Pittsburgh is gonna have to draft a
26:26
Speaker 1: quarterback this year because I don't know how much gas
26:30
Speaker 1: he has left in the tank. But I think the
26:32
Speaker 1: relationship there helps. He's an established coach that has won
26:36
Speaker 1: a Super Bowl. He has an over sixty percent winning
26:39
Speaker 1: percentage in the National Football League. So it's it's not
26:42
Speaker 1: it's not a terrible hire. It's just different than what
26:45
Speaker 1: you would expect it For the Pittsburgh Steelers. I thought
26:46
Speaker 1: they would go a defensive guy, you know. I thought
26:50
Speaker 1: Flores or Or or Anthony Weaver seemed like guys that
26:55
Speaker 1: they would go with. Even Mentor, I thought he would
26:58
Speaker 1: he would be a guy Chris Shula with with the
27:03
Speaker 1: with the Rams, I thought he would be an option
27:06
Speaker 1: for him. So, but Mike McCarthy's a fine higher. I
27:09
Speaker 1: think it's safe. I think it's similar to what the
27:11
Speaker 1: Atlanta Falcons and Matt Ryan did. You know, they went
27:14
Speaker 1: with a safe, established coach that you're not going to
27:17
Speaker 1: get a lot of flak for it. It's just not
27:18
Speaker 1: going to cause a lot of excitement to the fan base.
27:20
Speaker 1: But it's also you're not gonna sit there and be
27:22
Speaker 1: like he struck out, you know, hiring a coach that
27:24
Speaker 1: has won a lot of games in the National Football League,
27:27
Speaker 1: just like the Atlanta Falcons. Hey, a two time coach
27:29
Speaker 1: of the Year. You're not going to feel like you
27:30
Speaker 1: totally struck out. Hiring a two time coach of the year.
27:33
Speaker 1: Clearly he can do it at a high level if
27:34
Speaker 1: if his team is talented enough, and you you give
27:37
Speaker 1: him a good enough roster and and some structure, he
27:39
Speaker 1: can get the job done. So Giants hiring John Harball,
27:44
Speaker 1: I think they felt he was the best coach in
27:47
Speaker 1: the hiring cycle. A lot of teams would have felt
27:49
Speaker 1: that way. They went all in on on him really
27:51
Speaker 1: early and and and went full court press. Uh, and
27:55
Speaker 1: they got their guy, Joe Brady. Seems seems odd because
27:59
Speaker 1: I'm I'm pretty sure we saw some Buffalo Bills fans
28:03
Speaker 1: and I'm not saying it was a large contendent, but
28:04
Speaker 1: it was a loud contingent calling for his job throughout
28:08
Speaker 1: the season at times. So so to go from calling
28:11
Speaker 1: for his job to him being the head coach, you know,
28:14
Speaker 1: if things don't go well, early you could see that,
28:17
Speaker 1: you know, kind of unraveling pretty quickly. But he's had
28:21
Speaker 1: success just about everywhere. He's gone a great relationship and
28:25
Speaker 1: rapport with with Josh Allen, which helps, uh the continuity there.
28:30
Speaker 1: But again, you feel like it's a safe pick and
28:34
Speaker 1: that's what they wanted to go with. That whole process
28:39
Speaker 1: was kind of strange to me, and we spoke about
28:40
Speaker 1: it earlier, but I mean a few episodes ago. But
28:44
Speaker 1: Brandon Bean, you know that that that conversation and that
28:47
Speaker 1: the the way they talked about the conversation between Brandon
28:54
Speaker 1: Bean and McDermott and and Pegoula and the ownership group
28:59
Speaker 1: and how he basically said, you guys didn't give me
29:02
Speaker 1: enough to win a super Bowl to be a Super
29:03
Speaker 1: Bowl roster And instead of saying, okay, that's true, we
29:07
Speaker 1: were a little banged up and and the GM Bean
29:10
Speaker 1: could have done a little better of a job, they said, no,
29:12
Speaker 1: we're firing you because he's done a tremendous job and
29:17
Speaker 1: you haven't. And I just don't know if that's the
29:19
Speaker 1: right answer, Like I feel like it's it's about even
29:23
Speaker 1: there's some things McDermott did well with a limited roster
29:27
Speaker 1: there's some things, some players that Brandon Bean drafted and
29:33
Speaker 1: brought in that that helped elevate this team to where
29:35
Speaker 1: they are. But I don't feel like you you should have.
29:39
Speaker 1: There's a world where you fire McDermott and you don't
29:41
Speaker 1: fire being, but they did, and and then you hire
29:44
Speaker 1: from within. So it's almost like a double you're you're
29:49
Speaker 1: you're double punishing McDermott. You're it's it's an indictment against
29:53
Speaker 1: McDermott because you're saying, hey, we got everything else we needed,
29:56
Speaker 1: it was you. You're the issue. You're you're not a
29:58
Speaker 1: good leader. That's why our team struggled. And I'm not
30:00
Speaker 1: sure that's that's entirely the truth. I'm not sure that's
30:05
Speaker 1: a lot of people would agree with that statement. And
30:07
Speaker 1: we'll see I agree with you.
30:09
Speaker 2: I mean, you look at the Buffalo Bill's roster and
30:12
Speaker 2: there are so many voids in that lineup, and we
30:14
Speaker 2: talked about it all year long. They're receiving corps. I mean,
30:17
Speaker 2: you got one of the best, one of the top
30:19
Speaker 2: three quarterbacks in the NFL, and you surround him with
30:23
Speaker 2: minimal weapons. That falls on Bean and then to double
30:28
Speaker 2: down at it from Pegoula's standpoint. I know we talked
30:30
Speaker 2: about a last episode, but I just can't get enough
30:33
Speaker 2: of he goes and publicly, you know, criticizes Keon Coleman
30:38
Speaker 2: and then basically says that Bean was pressured into drafting
30:41
Speaker 2: him by the coaching staff. You know, like, what is this?
30:46
Speaker 2: It makes no sense to me.
30:48
Speaker 1: I'm with you.
30:49
Speaker 2: Back to Mike McCarthy, I think the Steelers are strategic
30:52
Speaker 2: in this higher and we've talked about bridge quarterbacks. I
30:55
Speaker 2: think Mike McCarthy's the perfect bridge coach. I imagine they're
30:59
Speaker 2: going to bring in somebody that they feel will be
31:01
Speaker 2: their apparent to Mike McCarthy, that he can kind of
31:04
Speaker 2: groom and bring along at OC or DC. But and
31:08
Speaker 2: like you said, his familiar familiarity with Aaron Rodgers makes
31:12
Speaker 2: a lot of sense. And then Jesse Mentor with the
31:14
Speaker 2: Ravens and up and coming rising you know, young defensive mind.
31:20
Speaker 2: I mean, much like Mike McDonald, you can kind of
31:23
Speaker 2: make sense as to why they made that decision. Now,
31:26
Speaker 2: there are two big jobs that are left open right now,
31:28
Speaker 2: one being in Arizona, the other in Vegas. They have
31:31
Speaker 2: not been filled. I know they're going through the interviewing process.
31:34
Speaker 2: But why do you think those positions haven't been filled.
31:37
Speaker 2: Is it a lack of desire to go there as
31:40
Speaker 2: a coach or do you think they're just still mulling
31:42
Speaker 2: through their options at this point beyond I would go
31:49
Speaker 2: to thank I go to Arizona. Hell yeah, man, I
31:51
Speaker 2: mean just vacationing.
31:53
Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah see yeah, No, Mitchell,
31:58
Speaker 1: I don't think that's not an attract jobs one Arizona Cardinals.
32:02
Speaker 1: I think they have talent. I think you have quarterback uncertainty.
32:07
Speaker 1: That's scary for any young coach that's trying to break
32:09
Speaker 1: into this industry. Maybe you'll get a coach that's desperate
32:12
Speaker 1: to get a job, you know, looking for a big
32:14
Speaker 1: pay day because you're gonna have to pay them, and
32:16
Speaker 1: then cool, you'll take that job. But going into the
32:19
Speaker 1: NFC West, that's a gauntlet and it's not going anywhere.
32:23
Speaker 1: You know, you got to go against Kyle Shanahan, McVeigh
32:25
Speaker 1: and McDonald over and over and over, and that's just
32:28
Speaker 1: for a chance at the playoffs. I don't think that's
32:31
Speaker 1: the job I'm signing up for. And then if you
32:33
Speaker 1: look at the Las Vegas Raiders, so the Chiefs aren't
32:38
Speaker 1: gonna be down forever. They're not gonna be down forever.
32:41
Speaker 1: They're not, and then you would expect them to come back.
32:44
Speaker 1: You got to go against Mahomes. Then you got Herbert
32:47
Speaker 1: who you got to deal with. And then the Denver
32:48
Speaker 1: Broncos were just in the AFC Championship and if they didn't,
32:51
Speaker 1: if their quarterback doesn't get hurt, they're likely to go
32:53
Speaker 1: into the Super Bowl. So you really want to sign
32:57
Speaker 1: up for that again, quarterback uncertainty. You got number one
33:00
Speaker 1: pick in the draft. But is Mendoza the answer is he?
33:03
Speaker 1: Is he a guy guy? Or is he a guy
33:05
Speaker 1: that you need to surround with a really good team. Now,
33:08
Speaker 1: if you talked about the Minnesota Vikings drafting Mendoza, I'd say, Oh,
33:12
Speaker 1: that's gonna be a that's gonna work out pretty well
33:14
Speaker 1: for that kid. He's got a you know, talented defense,
33:17
Speaker 1: you got two talented pass catchers, you got a coach
33:19
Speaker 1: who can scheme it up and you can get the
33:21
Speaker 1: ball where it's supposed to get. Now, you put him
33:24
Speaker 1: on a team without that, without a lot of offensive weapons.
33:29
Speaker 1: You got a tight end, you may have a running back,
33:32
Speaker 1: you got a highly drafted running back house, the offensive line,
33:36
Speaker 1: I don't know the defense cupboards, mayor. And so when
33:43
Speaker 1: you talk about from that perspective, what coach can go
33:46
Speaker 1: on their young coach where you're getting your first opportunity.
33:50
Speaker 1: And again, they fired each of the last couple head
33:53
Speaker 1: coaches in their first year like it's just been fire fire,
33:57
Speaker 1: fire sale, And again that's that's a scary predicament. Do
34:01
Speaker 1: you really want to put your family in that position where, hey,
34:04
Speaker 1: things aren't going to go well and this isn't a
34:06
Speaker 1: great setup to begin with, and if you don't do
34:09
Speaker 1: well in your first year, you're going to be fired again.
34:13
Speaker 1: This is These are the things that come when you
34:15
Speaker 1: continue to fire ahead coaches and don't give them a
34:18
Speaker 1: chance to make up for their mistakes. People will wonder
34:22
Speaker 1: why Aaron Glenn got another opportunity because it just looks
34:24
Speaker 1: so dysfunctional to keep firing coaches after the first year,
34:27
Speaker 1: Like it looks bad. It means you made an awful
34:30
Speaker 1: decision the first time and you're trying to get out
34:33
Speaker 1: of it. But when you keep making off decisions, then
34:35
Speaker 1: they stop thinking it's the coaches and start thinking it's you.
34:38
Speaker 1: So that's a job somebody will take because you have to,
34:43
Speaker 1: but it's not anybody's first choice.
34:46
Speaker 2: I want to talk a little bit about the Detroit
34:48
Speaker 2: Lions hire at OC. They hired Drew Petsing Arizona Cardinals
34:52
Speaker 2: for more offensive coordinator, and it was met with a
34:56
Speaker 2: lot of question marks by the fan base, a lot
34:58
Speaker 2: of criticism going down Campbell's way. Fans, you know, wanted
35:03
Speaker 2: Mike McDaniel and rightfully so. I mean, it's got that
35:06
Speaker 2: cool factor. Hey, Mike McDaniels is his offensive genius and mastermind.
35:11
Speaker 2: But I'm on Ross Saint Brown stood up for his coach,
35:15
Speaker 2: Dan Campbell, and but he also offended some fans in
35:19
Speaker 2: doing so. On his podcast, he said, fans need to
35:22
Speaker 2: relax and let this thing play out. Most of you, guys,
35:25
Speaker 2: referring to the fans, don't know really much about anything
35:28
Speaker 2: about football. Richard first and foremost, your thoughts on this
35:34
Speaker 2: whole hire Drew Pettsing. I know you're not entirely familiar
35:38
Speaker 2: with him individually, but just looking at the Arizona Cardinal's offense,
35:42
Speaker 2: there were some bright spots over the last couple of years.
35:45
Speaker 2: And also I'm on Ros's comments, well.
35:49
Speaker 1: I mean, I can understand where both sides are coming from.
35:51
Speaker 1: You know, you when you were paying attention to the
35:54
Speaker 1: National Football League and you're hearing about all these big
35:57
Speaker 1: names quote unquote big name offensive court and coming out,
36:01
Speaker 1: you're really excited. You're like, man, give us one of those,
36:03
Speaker 1: get us, get us. It's like a name brand shoe.
36:05
Speaker 1: It's like a man, get us the Nike, you know,
36:08
Speaker 1: new Nike whatever it is, And it's like, I don't.
36:11
Speaker 1: I don't want the off brand whatever shoe that looks
36:15
Speaker 1: like the Nike and probably it's just as good, but
36:18
Speaker 1: I don't. I didn't. I haven't heard of that. It's
36:20
Speaker 1: not been advertising the big magazines, but it's probably just
36:23
Speaker 1: as good and probably made by the same people. It
36:25
Speaker 1: just doesn't have the Nike logo on it. And I
36:27
Speaker 1: think if you go back four years, maybe five years,
36:33
Speaker 1: I guess six years maybe did you know who Mike
36:36
Speaker 1: McDaniel was? Did you really know? Like did you did you?
36:41
Speaker 1: Did you know he was the one game coordinator of
36:42
Speaker 1: the San Francisco before nine is how often did you
36:44
Speaker 1: hear his name? Like you know who he is now?
36:47
Speaker 1: But when he got hired by the Miami Dolphins, where
36:49
Speaker 1: you're like, who not like like, don't don't use now,
36:54
Speaker 1: don't use now, and and try to try to relitigate it.
36:57
Speaker 1: But go back, just try to do that exercise with me,
37:01
Speaker 1: and go back in your brain and think when he
37:02
Speaker 1: got hired, did you really know who he was? And
37:05
Speaker 1: how often does that happen. There are some incredibly talented
37:09
Speaker 1: offensive and defensive minds in this game, and not all
37:12
Speaker 1: of them get a ton of press. Not all of
37:15
Speaker 1: them are on the biggest teams, are on the biggest
37:17
Speaker 1: stage or even at the forefront for you to hear
37:20
Speaker 1: about them until they get hired. But I don't think
37:26
Speaker 1: these teams are making knee jerk decisions. I think these
37:29
Speaker 1: guys are doing their due diligence, and a team like
37:32
Speaker 1: the Detroit Lions that has been incredibly proficient offensively and
37:36
Speaker 1: has a quarterback that can get the job done at
37:38
Speaker 1: a high level, I don't think they're making a knee
37:42
Speaker 1: jerk reaction. I think when they brought McDaniel in, they
37:45
Speaker 1: had conversations with him, they learned what they needed to learn,
37:48
Speaker 1: and they said, hey, I love it, but maybe it
37:51
Speaker 1: doesn't work for what we're trying to do. Some schemes
37:55
Speaker 1: don't work with certain personnel, not that the running backs,
37:58
Speaker 1: but maybe it doesn't work with the offensive line have
38:00
Speaker 1: maybe running running you know, the scheme that they have
38:04
Speaker 1: that he has that he would be successful with. Now
38:06
Speaker 1: mind you, Jared Goff, I think can play in that scheme.
38:08
Speaker 1: He can play in that offense because he has but
38:12
Speaker 1: maybe it doesn't work. Maybe the personalities don't work, and
38:15
Speaker 1: they have to work with each other all they have
38:17
Speaker 1: to depend on each other. And so you have to
38:19
Speaker 1: understand that. What I think Amen Raz speaking to is that,
38:24
Speaker 1: like you don't know every coordinator and every scheme and
38:27
Speaker 1: every guy, and just because it's not the big guy,
38:29
Speaker 1: big name guy that you want, doesn't mean he's not
38:31
Speaker 1: going to be able to do the job. Like if
38:33
Speaker 1: we're looking in the Super Bowl right now, you got
38:38
Speaker 1: you got Clint Kubiak, who was work Was anybody really
38:43
Speaker 1: high on him before he got to Seattle this year?
38:47
Speaker 1: Like you know the Kubiak name, you know, because of
38:50
Speaker 1: his father and what he did, But were there many
38:53
Speaker 1: people clamoring to get him as their offensive coordinator? I'm
38:56
Speaker 1: not sure. I I he got hot. Now he's now
39:00
Speaker 1: because his team is successful, his scheme is successful. He's
39:02
Speaker 1: doing a fantastic job in the Seattle. But again, I
39:07
Speaker 1: think people get so enamored with the press and the
39:10
Speaker 1: headline names that you see that you forget like there
39:14
Speaker 1: are guys out there grinding, And a lot of these
39:17
Speaker 1: guys came from grind. The Matt Lafleurs to Mike Laflores,
39:20
Speaker 1: the Kyle Shanahans, the mcveig's, they were quality control, worked
39:24
Speaker 1: themselves up, work their way to get to where they are,
39:27
Speaker 1: and you didn't You didn't know them until you knew them.
39:31
Speaker 1: And so just I caution you to before going out
39:36
Speaker 1: and being like, man, this guy sucks. Who is this guy?
39:38
Speaker 1: Because sometimes those are the guys that blossom, And then
39:41
Speaker 1: you're sitting there like, man, did you know who Dave
39:43
Speaker 1: Canalis was? Please tell me you knew who Dave Canalis was?
39:47
Speaker 1: Because Dave Canalis is the head coach for the Carolina Panthers.
39:50
Speaker 1: And I knew him when he was the receivers coach
39:52
Speaker 1: for the Seattle Seahawks, before he was the quarterbacks coach
39:55
Speaker 1: for the Seattle Seahawks, but you didn't. Now he's a
39:58
Speaker 1: head coach and now he's doing a pretty good job.
40:00
Speaker 1: So just again I caution because not every guy whose
40:06
Speaker 1: name you didn't know is a bad choice.
40:11
Speaker 2: Dave Canalis love it. How about Brian day ball Rich
40:16
Speaker 2: going to the Tennessee Titans. You know this was They
40:20
Speaker 2: must have loved cam Ward or he must have loved that.
40:22
Speaker 2: The Giants offered the number three pick, twenty twenty six
40:25
Speaker 2: first rounder and multiple Day two picks last year to
40:28
Speaker 2: the Titans for the number one pick in order to
40:30
Speaker 2: seleck cam Ward. Obviously, the Titans declined that offer. Dave
40:33
Speaker 2: ball is going to the Titans and helping out your boy,
40:36
Speaker 2: Robert Sala. What do you think about this hire? Robert
40:39
Speaker 2: Salas surrounding himself with another guy who's got a ton
40:42
Speaker 2: of experience, obviously former head coach of the Giants. Your
40:46
Speaker 2: thoughts about Sala's move here?
40:49
Speaker 1: I love it. I love it. Established offensive coordinator who
40:51
Speaker 1: can do it at a high level with a quarterback.
40:53
Speaker 1: He wants to do it with a quarterback that he
40:55
Speaker 1: studied well, and he clearly had a lot of respect
40:58
Speaker 1: and regard for and went outside of his way to
41:01
Speaker 1: try to acquire him before they obviously acquired Jackson Darton,
41:05
Speaker 1: and he went that direction. But I like it. I
41:09
Speaker 1: like it if he's that high on it, then who
41:11
Speaker 1: am I to be upset? I think Robert Salah is
41:14
Speaker 1: gonna give him the reins of the offense and allow
41:16
Speaker 1: him to run it the way he wants to run it. Uh,
41:18
Speaker 1: he's gonna run the defense. I'm not sure if Salah's
41:20
Speaker 1: gonna call plays or not, but it's as good of
41:25
Speaker 1: a move as he could have made. I mean, I
41:27
Speaker 1: think if you get McDaniel, you feel comfortable with it,
41:29
Speaker 1: but you get day Bowl, you feel great.
41:32
Speaker 2: And how about Mike McDaniel ultimately ending up with the
41:34
Speaker 2: LA Chargers. It seems like a good fit on paper.
41:37
Speaker 2: He can still wear his his jeorts out there as
41:40
Speaker 2: joggers in LA. It makes sense, you know, just aesthetically,
41:45
Speaker 2: but your thoughts as in execution here.
41:50
Speaker 1: We'll see. I think Jim Harball has evolved a lot
41:53
Speaker 1: since the guy that that coached me in college, and
41:56
Speaker 1: it seems he's done a better job of being flexible
41:59
Speaker 1: and and and and and going with the flow in
42:03
Speaker 1: terms of of reading the room and and and reading
42:07
Speaker 1: the personalities of his personnel and coaches. Because if he
42:11
Speaker 1: was a guy that I knew in college, I'd say
42:12
Speaker 1: it'd be a be a bit of a clash of
42:15
Speaker 1: personalities because both guys are really smart, both guys. But
42:20
Speaker 1: but Jim has a way of doing things and and
42:24
Speaker 1: this is an alternative way. And I think McDaniels is
42:26
Speaker 1: going to show him an alternative approach to coaching that
42:29
Speaker 1: he may be unfamiliar with. But he's dealt with guys
42:32
Speaker 1: who are who are more you know, these these offensive
42:37
Speaker 1: geniuses who are a little more quirky is the word
42:39
Speaker 1: I'll use, than what he's what he's accustomed to. You know,
42:42
Speaker 1: he's an old school football coach, old school GrITT and grind,
42:45
Speaker 1: grinded out kind of guy. And and I think Mike
42:49
Speaker 1: is more of the new school analytics, UH creative scheme,
42:52
Speaker 1: a creative way to approach the game, an offensive genius
42:56
Speaker 1: run game, UH savant and and and I think Jim
43:01
Speaker 1: obviously had a lot of respect for his presentation and
43:04
Speaker 1: how he showed that he can manipulate a scheme and
43:06
Speaker 1: how he understands the game and how he sees football
43:09
Speaker 1: because he has a brilliant way, in a brilliant mind
43:11
Speaker 1: for seeing this game and being able to manipulate the
43:14
Speaker 1: defensive personnel to have success. So I think it's a
43:18
Speaker 1: hand and Gulf Fit. He'll be great for not only
43:23
Speaker 1: you know, Jim and what they want to do, but
43:24
Speaker 1: he'll be great for Herbert and his development and making
43:28
Speaker 1: the game easier for him and his development. You know,
43:32
Speaker 1: he said something in his initial press conference like he
43:34
Speaker 1: has all the talent in the world, but we don't
43:36
Speaker 1: want to always depend on him to make these incredible throws.
43:40
Speaker 1: I want to put him in situations where, hey, sure
43:43
Speaker 1: you can do that, but I'm going to give you
43:44
Speaker 1: a lot of layups too, a lot of down the
43:46
Speaker 1: field layups where the guy is just wide open, and
43:48
Speaker 1: every now and then, I'm going to ask you to
43:49
Speaker 1: be special, but I'm not going to depend on you
43:51
Speaker 1: being special for offense to be what it needs to be.
43:56
Speaker 2: He's got a lot of weapons in LA and with
43:58
Speaker 2: the healthy old line, lookout for the Chargers next year.
44:01
Speaker 2: It could be really exciting in LA for them. We
44:04
Speaker 2: can't go a full podcast without diving a little bit
44:07
Speaker 2: into the San Francisco forty nine Ers. Let's talk offseason
44:10
Speaker 2: San Francisco forty nine. There's gonna be a lot of questions,
44:13
Speaker 2: how do you revamp this team? Obviously got to get healthy,
44:16
Speaker 2: but one of the questions is you, if you are
44:20
Speaker 2: John Lynch, do you resign Juwan Jennings or do you,
44:24
Speaker 2: you know, maybe use that money elsewhere, maybe reinforce the
44:28
Speaker 2: old line with a guy like Tyler Linderbaum from the
44:31
Speaker 2: Baltimore Ravens. You know what direction do you think the
44:35
Speaker 2: forty nine ers should go this offseason?
44:38
Speaker 1: I think you start building an offensive line that can
44:41
Speaker 1: move people. And sure Juwan Jennings embodies everything you want
44:47
Speaker 1: for the San Francisco forty nine Ers, that offense where
44:50
Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan preaches he's a guy that works hardy, does
44:52
Speaker 1: things the right way. But can you find another? Is
44:56
Speaker 1: the question? What he's he what does he get on
45:00
Speaker 1: the open market? And I think you allow him to
45:02
Speaker 1: explore that. I think you keep keep the phone lines open.
45:05
Speaker 1: I think you keep communication. But I don't think you're
45:07
Speaker 1: the first. I don't think you. I think you let
45:09
Speaker 1: him walk out of the building and let him, let
45:11
Speaker 1: him see what he can get. Now, I think you
45:13
Speaker 1: try to try to match it if it's if it's fair,
45:15
Speaker 1: if you think, hey man, that's a low enough number
45:17
Speaker 1: that we could stay in the fight, and and hope
45:19
Speaker 1: that you didn't burn the bridge by letting him walk.
45:21
Speaker 1: But I think getting a guy like Tyler Linnenbaum, uh
45:24
Speaker 1: it would be Linderbaum is a great pickup. But I
45:27
Speaker 1: also have concerns about why Baltimore let him walk. You know,
45:31
Speaker 1: I I we gotta you gotta do your due diligence
45:34
Speaker 1: and figure out why would they let a twenty five
45:36
Speaker 1: year old, three time Pro bowler and former first round
45:40
Speaker 1: pick get out the building? Because rarely are those guys available,
45:43
Speaker 1: and for that reason, they're they're they're dependable, they're durable,
45:47
Speaker 1: they're they're what they what you what you expect them
45:50
Speaker 1: to be. And you're gonna be paying a high price
45:52
Speaker 1: tag with the injury history of the San Francisco for
45:54
Speaker 1: nine that you got to make sure you you make
45:56
Speaker 1: sure you open every door and peek under every every
45:59
Speaker 1: man and peek into every quarter to make sure this
46:02
Speaker 1: guy is is gonna make it through the football season
46:05
Speaker 1: every single year. Uh, if you're gonna pay him that
46:07
Speaker 1: much money because of just the history that you've had.
46:11
Speaker 1: But I think that is a move you make. I
46:13
Speaker 1: think offensive and defensive line is world championships are won.
46:18
Speaker 1: I think you can find the receivers and maybe they
46:20
Speaker 1: they use Mac Jones to help them find their their
46:24
Speaker 1: number one receiver in some way. Maybe there's a lot
46:27
Speaker 1: of quarterback needy teams. And we we already mentioned the
46:30
Speaker 1: Minnesota Vikings, but the New York Jets, Like, hey, is
46:34
Speaker 1: Wilson available? Like can we get a mac Jones and
46:37
Speaker 1: and a pick for Wilson? Like is that is that?
46:40
Speaker 1: Is Garrett Wilson available? That's a conversation you're gonna have
46:43
Speaker 1: to ask. And they've been they've been sellers before. I
46:47
Speaker 1: mean they they got rid of Quinn and Williams, they
46:49
Speaker 1: get rid of Sauce Gartner. So that's conversation that you're
46:52
Speaker 1: gonna have to have. And an offensive coordinator going to
46:55
Speaker 1: the Jets is gonna want want some security. Hey, I
46:57
Speaker 1: needed an established quarterback. I think Kevin o'c donald was
47:00
Speaker 1: gonna be the first call that hey is he available?
47:02
Speaker 1: Because I know he could come in here and do
47:03
Speaker 1: the job all right. He could be our quarterback that
47:06
Speaker 1: gets us through to make sure we know we have
47:08
Speaker 1: stability and we know are all pro receivers happy. What
47:13
Speaker 1: are you willing to give for him? You know, I
47:14
Speaker 1: don't think you give Justin Jefferson, but can you give Addison?
47:17
Speaker 1: Addison has some off the field issues to San Francisco
47:20
Speaker 1: forty nine ers. I don't know the answer to questions,
47:22
Speaker 1: but I think those are the things that you're going
47:25
Speaker 1: to have to explore. But I think solidifying the offensive line,
47:28
Speaker 1: finding a pass rusher, finding two you can never have
47:31
Speaker 1: enough of them, is priority over wide receiver. I know
47:35
Speaker 1: they need to get faster, they need to get more talented,
47:37
Speaker 1: they need more speed and all that good stuff. But
47:40
Speaker 1: if you can't block for the fifty million dollar quarterback,
47:43
Speaker 1: then none of it really matters.
47:45
Speaker 2: Richard, It's finally super Bowl. I guess lead up to
47:49
Speaker 2: super Bowl week. You're no stranger to playing in the
47:51
Speaker 2: super Bowl, having played in three of them. Walk our walk,
47:55
Speaker 2: our followers, our listeners through what this week really means? Like,
47:59
Speaker 2: what do you you doing as a player this week?
48:01
Speaker 2: I know next week everyone's in the Super Bowl host
48:05
Speaker 2: city practicing, grinding it out. Are you guys resting, relaxing,
48:10
Speaker 2: film study, getting your mind right, getting your body rested up?
48:15
Speaker 2: Or you guys, what are you guys doing? Are you
48:16
Speaker 2: guys practicing? Walk us through really what goes on this
48:19
Speaker 2: week and leading up to the super Bowl.
48:22
Speaker 1: Mitchell, you party, you go out, makes it you don't
48:25
Speaker 1: lock in at all. You just just have a good time.
48:28
Speaker 1: You're happy to be No, no, I mean do you
48:31
Speaker 1: you lock in? First? The first initial shock you get
48:34
Speaker 1: through the first day, you're dealing with millions of texts
48:38
Speaker 1: from all these people. Hey, is tickets, tickets, tickets, man, congratulations,
48:42
Speaker 1: congratulations super Bowl, living the life stream from every person
48:45
Speaker 1: that you've ever known. Then it's like, hey, could you
48:48
Speaker 1: help me with this flight? Could you help me with
48:49
Speaker 1: this flight? Could you you figure out the people like
48:51
Speaker 1: this is by Thursday. You need to figure out who's coming,
48:55
Speaker 1: what they're doing, where they're staying, their flight situation. Are
48:58
Speaker 1: they riding on the team playing? Are they stay at
49:01
Speaker 1: the team hotel? Figure all that, where's your massages? Who
49:05
Speaker 1: you know? You deal with the guys that are in
49:08
Speaker 1: charge of player personnel and player development, and make sure
49:11
Speaker 1: that you have your systems in place for next week
49:13
Speaker 1: so that you can have a week like you would
49:15
Speaker 1: have at home. Hey, things are in place that you
49:19
Speaker 1: get your massages the same day you get your acupuncture,
49:21
Speaker 1: if you do game ready, if you freaking have a
49:26
Speaker 1: therapist you see every Wednesday, make sure that they are there.
49:31
Speaker 1: And then in terms of media, I think Mike McDonald
49:35
Speaker 1: would be doing it the right way. He'd probably shut
49:37
Speaker 1: down media this week. For the most part. You don't
49:39
Speaker 1: want a guy, a young guy who's never been in
49:42
Speaker 1: this situation, to say anything crazy heading into the most
49:45
Speaker 1: chaotic week of their lives, like because in a second,
49:49
Speaker 1: everybody's gonna have to answer questions, not just the big
49:52
Speaker 1: time guys who have a stage that the sixty eighth
49:55
Speaker 1: guy on the roster, practice squad, guy who just got
49:58
Speaker 1: here a few weeks ago, is going to be sitting
50:01
Speaker 1: there at media day and somebody's gonna put a mic
50:03
Speaker 1: in his face and he's gonna have to answer questions.
50:05
Speaker 1: They're looking for somebody to give bulletin board headline material
50:09
Speaker 1: and they do not care who gives it. So I
50:11
Speaker 1: think Mike McDonald's gonna keep things under wrap, keep his
50:14
Speaker 1: team working, keep him consistent, make sure everybody's healed up,
50:17
Speaker 1: everybody gets the treatment they deserve, everybody's fast and flowing.
50:21
Speaker 1: We focused on endurance, especially the first Super Bowl, because
50:25
Speaker 1: we were facing Peyton Manning and those guys, and they
50:28
Speaker 1: ran this really fast, up tempo offense, so we were
50:31
Speaker 1: running gassers. We were making sure that our conditioning was
50:35
Speaker 1: where it needed to be so that we had no
50:37
Speaker 1: reason to tap out of this game, and we refuse
50:39
Speaker 1: to lose. That way, we're gonna be able to stand
50:42
Speaker 1: toe to toe with these guys. And I think we
50:43
Speaker 1: took so much pride in that because there was a
50:46
Speaker 1: couple of really long drives where there were thirteen fourteen
50:48
Speaker 1: play drives and their receivers are tapping out of the game,
50:51
Speaker 1: and we're talking crap to them the whole time. They're
50:53
Speaker 1: going to the sideline, like, hey, this is the Super Bowl.
50:56
Speaker 1: Y'all supposed to be this big time offense running all
50:58
Speaker 1: these these fasts, and y'all are tapping out in the
51:01
Speaker 1: Super Bowl like you're bringing backups in the Super Bowl. Understand,
51:04
Speaker 1: we don't respect you. We don't respect that because y'all
51:06
Speaker 1: not man up. Hey, step stand up, stand up and
51:10
Speaker 1: come out here. Be in shape. Be in shape, because
51:13
Speaker 1: you can't be tired in the Super Bowl. We don't
51:15
Speaker 1: get the sub. That's that's what you got to appreciate
51:18
Speaker 1: about defensive backs. There's no there's no sub for a corner.
51:22
Speaker 1: If the if the drive's eighteen plays, I'm out here
51:24
Speaker 1: for eighteen. Now they might go goal line where they
51:27
Speaker 1: got to bring the big guys in and then we
51:28
Speaker 1: got to go to the sideline. But outside of that,
51:31
Speaker 1: we're in the game. So we we conditioned over conditioned
51:35
Speaker 1: for that game. The other Super Bowl we were banged up.
51:39
Speaker 1: The other Super Bowl, we were banged up. I had
51:41
Speaker 1: a getting the MRIs and X rays and treatment just
51:44
Speaker 1: to make sure we make it to the super Bowl
51:46
Speaker 1: game and uh and in Arizona. But both teams are
51:51
Speaker 1: relatively healthy, they'rey excited. I think both coaches are are
51:55
Speaker 1: similar in the mindset that they want no distractions, no nonsense,
52:00
Speaker 1: Let's get to this game and let's win. And I
52:03
Speaker 1: think that's what Mike McDonald's focusing on. Obviously, there's there's
52:07
Speaker 1: mandatory appearances during the Super Bowl week, mandatory things, and
52:11
Speaker 1: it's a lot for guys who don't usually deal with media.
52:13
Speaker 1: And I think for this Seattle team, there aren't a
52:16
Speaker 1: lot of big time personalities where where you're gonna be like, hey,
52:19
Speaker 1: this guy is gonna be on the podium, this guy
52:20
Speaker 1: like like we had we had a ton of characters
52:22
Speaker 1: on our team. You mean that don't have a.
52:24
Speaker 2: Richard Sherman and Marshawn Lynch on the roster rich.
52:28
Speaker 1: Right, right, That's pretty much what I'm saying. But but
52:31
Speaker 1: you're gonna get to meet some of these guys. You're
52:33
Speaker 1: gonna get to hear them. You know, the world's gonna
52:35
Speaker 1: get to meet meet some of these guys for the
52:36
Speaker 1: first time. So it's gonna be it's gonna be really cool.
52:38
Speaker 1: That's one of the really cool things about the Super Bowl.
52:40
Speaker 1: But this week it's it's it's making sure people get
52:43
Speaker 1: their tickets, making sure people get situated where they're supposed
52:46
Speaker 1: to be. You try to go on to next week,
52:48
Speaker 1: not dealing with any of that. Like at when you
52:51
Speaker 1: get to Santa Clair to San Jose, that is done.
52:55
Speaker 1: That is done. When they get on the plane Friday,
52:57
Speaker 1: I mean Sunday, it should be all done. The tickets,
53:00
Speaker 1: the flights, everything booked. No distractions. Don't call these kids
53:03
Speaker 1: and be trying to like, oh man, I messed up.
53:06
Speaker 1: Can such and such come? No, it's too late, Like
53:08
Speaker 1: it's too late, Stop distracted. This is about to be
53:10
Speaker 1: the biggest game in their lives. You don't want to
53:12
Speaker 1: go out, you don't want to mispractice, you don't want
53:13
Speaker 1: to be late to anything. And I don't think Mike
53:16
Speaker 1: McDonald's gonna have those issues.
53:18
