Speaker 1: Hey, my name is Matt Appley, based from Ocean City soundtrack,
• 0:03
Speaker 1: and this is my friend Josh.
• 0:05
Speaker 2: Wait a minute, that's not the way to do it
• 0:08
Speaker 2: your own name. Yeah, all right, okay, thank you. I'm
• 0:12
  Speaker 2: just a guy.
• 0:14
Speaker 3: It's been nearly a decade since your last Australian shows.
• 0:17
Speaker 3: What does it feel like to returning down Under and
• 0:20
Speaker 3: what's your energy like going into this tour.
• 0:24
  Speaker 1: We're excited, it's been excited. It's been ten years. We're
• 0:28
Speaker 1: really ready to come back and get in some sunshine and.
• 0:33
Speaker 2: Show the crowds down there.
• 0:35
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 0:36
Speaker 1: First shows a pretty good chunk of time off.
• 0:40
Speaker 4: Yeah it was in October. Yeah, okay, oh wow.
• 0:44
Speaker 3: And I imagine it's still pretty cold for you guys
• 0:46
Speaker 3: over there, so just be prepared. It will still be
• 0:49
  Speaker 3: quite hot here.
• 0:50
Speaker 4: Yeah no, And I don't have for me right now.
• 0:53
Speaker 4: But it's it was five year today, which is a
• 0:57
Speaker 4: fair night, so that it is like negative some yeah,
• 1:02
Speaker 4: and and windy and really like wind advisory wane, like lusty, brutal.
• 1:09
Speaker 4: I was outside earlier and I was like, this sucks.
• 1:12
Speaker 4: At least the sun was out a little bit, but
• 1:14
Speaker 4: holy sh it. Usually it's gray like where I live
• 1:17
Speaker 4: right here, it's like gray all through the winter. It sucks.
• 1:21
Speaker 4: So you've got any sunny day and get you got
• 1:23
Speaker 4: to go out there. But yeah, I have little I
• 1:25
Speaker 4: have lamps that I have to sit in front of
• 1:27
  Speaker 4: so that I don't become a depressed as I have.
• 1:29
  Speaker 2: One up there.
• 1:30
Speaker 5: Oh, I don't blame you. Awesome.
• 1:34
Speaker 3: You'll be sharing the stage with Yellow Card for the
• 1:36
Speaker 3: twentieth anniversary celebration. What's it like to be part of
• 1:39
Speaker 3: such an iconic tour and how do you think your
• 1:41
  Speaker 3: set compliments this?
• 1:45
Speaker 1: Uh, I think the I think we're going to match
• 1:47
Speaker 1: well energy wise. They've always we've always been very similar
• 1:51
  Speaker 1: energy wise.
• 1:52
Speaker 4: Definitely, like Avenue doesn't seem far off from something we
• 1:55
Speaker 4: would have written. Not like I'm saying we were, but
• 1:58
Speaker 4: I'm saying like we like Everything's Ocean Avenue. It's the
• 2:01
Speaker 4: same era that they got much bigger than. But we
• 2:05
Speaker 4: definitely compliment them in the right way. I think. Especially
• 2:09
Speaker 4: is that what they're doing that album right, It's like
• 2:11
Speaker 4: that album there too, So it's gonna be really Yeah,
• 2:13
Speaker 4: I think it's gonna make a lot of sense. And
• 2:15
Speaker 4: the play by teas too, like they you know, they've
• 2:17
Speaker 4: got stuff all over the map. Honestly, they make a
• 2:19
Speaker 4: lot of different types of songs, but we it's all bands.
• 2:23
Speaker 4: We've played shows with a bunch here randomly or warp tours.
• 2:26
Speaker 4: We've done whole warp tours with both these bands. So
• 2:27
Speaker 4: it makes a lot of sense for us to be together. Yeah,
• 2:31
Speaker 4: I'm glad they asked us.
• 2:32
Speaker 3: Yeah, and have you guys gotten had a chance yet
• 2:34
Speaker 3: to rehearse with everyone.
• 2:36
  Speaker 5: Yet or not?
• 2:38
  Speaker 4: No?
• 2:38
Speaker 1: No, no for two days two days before we fly out.
• 2:43
  Speaker 5: Wow, I mean.
• 2:48
Speaker 4: Of our band, we've played a lot of these I
• 2:50
Speaker 4: mean we've been playing these songs, some of them for
• 2:51
Speaker 4: twenty years and we played a lot of it. So
• 2:53
Speaker 4: really it's just about brushing off some cobwebs and make
• 2:56
Speaker 4: sure we can move our bodies. Obviously, big flights out
• 2:59
Speaker 4: there are gonna be rough, and recovering from that it's
• 3:01
Speaker 4: gonna hurt. We are gonna I think we're gonna fly
• 3:03
Speaker 4: it like a day earlier too, just to make sure
• 3:05
Speaker 4: that we can get like acclamand and Justin isn't like
• 3:08
Speaker 4: our singer isn't having like I haven't slept for four
• 3:11
Speaker 4: days to everything, because he's kind of one of those
• 3:12
Speaker 4: guys that when things get changed, he has a hard
• 3:15
Speaker 4: time functioning at all, or it's the opposite and it's
• 3:18
Speaker 4: like he's perfect. It's like it's one of the two.
• 3:20
Speaker 4: There's no in between. You like I'm doing okay. No,
• 3:22
Speaker 4: it's like I have for ten years and you're like what,
• 3:25
Speaker 4: you gotta sleep. It's like I sleep all day and
• 3:28
Speaker 4: like you gotta you should probably get some done. Yeah, yeah, no,
• 3:31
Speaker 4: he's kind of an all or nothing kind of guy.
• 3:33
Speaker 4: But yeah, there ely, I'm excited for it.
• 3:36
Speaker 3: I think it's smart, you know, coming in a day before,
• 3:40
Speaker 3: before before, so that you can.
• 3:42
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a lot of flying for us because we're
• 3:45
Speaker 4: going all the way to Perth to start. So I'm
• 3:47
Speaker 4: from Minnesota here and so I gotta we gotta fly
• 3:49
Speaker 4: to LA and then we gotta fly from LA to
• 3:51
Speaker 4: Sydney and then Sydney to Perth. So it's it's fuck,
• 3:54
Speaker 4: it's brutal, Yeah, brutal.
• 3:56
Speaker 3: Yeah, no, I know, I mean Sydney sort of, and
• 3:59
Speaker 3: just the like from Sydney to Perth alone is enough
• 4:02
  Speaker 3: for me.
• 4:02
Speaker 4: So yeah, our keuba player comes from New York, so
• 4:05
Speaker 4: he's got which is basically Perth to Sydney. So they
• 4:08
Speaker 4: got he's got to do that to La and then
• 4:10
Speaker 4: LA there and then we did that one of the
• 4:13
Speaker 4: first time we ever went there. We started a tour
• 4:15
Speaker 4: Perth with MxPx back in the day. I think it
• 4:17
Speaker 4: was like thirty six hours of travel to get there.
• 4:21
Speaker 4: It was a nightmare. A nightmare.
• 4:24
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 4:25
Speaker 4: Any any lounge access with a shower though, will change
• 4:28
Speaker 4: your life. So I think I took a shower in
• 4:30
Speaker 4: Sydney on that one in the airport and I was like,
• 4:33
Speaker 4: this is amazing. I feel like a new person.
• 4:36
  Speaker 5: Great.
• 4:36
Speaker 3: Yeah, after your ten year hiatus, how did the process
• 4:42
Speaker 3: of reuniting and recording stop talking feel?
• 4:45
Speaker 6: Was there a sense of pressure or excitement from your
• 4:46
  Speaker 6: fan base?
• 4:49
Speaker 4: I mean it's hard. I always feel pressure personally, just
• 4:51
Speaker 4: the way I am about stuff that we've got to
• 4:53
Speaker 4: live up to something or not make some mistake that
• 4:55
Speaker 4: we've made in the past, or you know whatever, and
• 5:00
Speaker 4: I both want to do be analytical about it and
• 5:02
Speaker 4: also like not give a fuck. It's really a hard game.
• 5:06
Speaker 4: Someone like our singer, he doesn't give a fuck. He
• 5:08
Speaker 4: just wants to do whatever he wants. If you say
• 5:10
Speaker 4: anything like oh, this will be he'll usually be like,
• 5:12
Speaker 4: I don't want to think about that or whatever. But
• 5:17
Speaker 4: I think I was just worried that we would not
• 5:19
Speaker 4: write cool shit together or just wouldn't sound with the
• 5:22
Speaker 4: last record we did. I really enjoyed it for the
• 5:25
Speaker 4: most part, but it was different than what we had
• 5:27
Speaker 4: done before, with a different guy in our band, a
• 5:29
Speaker 4: different kind of writing thing. This record was a little weird.
• 5:33
Speaker 4: It was a little disjointed in making the one that
• 5:35
Speaker 4: we've been working on and making. But it's turning out
• 5:38
Speaker 4: really great. I'm really excited for the music that we
• 5:40
Speaker 4: released and the music that we're going to release in
• 5:42
Speaker 4: the future. Here. I think it's gonna be awesome. I
• 5:45
Speaker 4: think I don't know, but I don't know how Matt felt.
• 5:48
Speaker 4: I mean, it was just you don't know what's going
• 5:49
  Speaker 4: to happen.
• 5:50
Speaker 5: So yeah, that's also we can't White and Hall.
• 5:54
Speaker 3: It has heel songwriting involved over the yase, especially since
• 5:56
  Speaker 3: your break.
• 5:57
Speaker 6: Did you feel that stuff Talking represents and you chapped
• 6:00
  Speaker 6: to the bandle?
• 6:03
  Speaker 2: I think so do you? Or I don't know, I
• 6:07
  Speaker 2: feel like.
• 6:09
Speaker 4: Go ahead, Yeah, Well, I think stop Talking is a
• 6:12
  Speaker 4: little strange because it's it's that one's a little bit
• 6:15
Speaker 4: it's a little different of a song from us like
• 6:18
Speaker 4: structure wise, it's very not like our not that we
• 6:22
Speaker 4: follow some pattern that we do, but accidentally we do
• 6:25
Speaker 4: a lot of times and you're like, oh shit, we're
• 6:27
Speaker 4: doing this too much. We should or it just doesn't
• 6:28
Speaker 4: make sense to us, like our brains are not wired
• 6:30
Speaker 4: to be like why would we do that? That song
• 6:32
Speaker 4: has a lot of like pre because because we have.
• 6:36
Speaker 4: I would say one thing we've done is we've looked
• 6:37
Speaker 4: at our music writing for so long as artists and
• 6:41
Speaker 4: friends and people that make music there, and we know
• 6:43
Speaker 4: our strength. We know that Justin's gonna write like the
• 6:45
Speaker 4: best pre chorus melody you've ever heard, but then when
• 6:49
Speaker 4: it comes to a chorus, he's gonna maybe be like
• 6:51
Speaker 4: not something that's like a hit or miss thing, Like
• 6:53
Speaker 4: sometimes he just makes the best course you ever heard,
• 6:56
Speaker 4: or sometimes he can't figure it out and it's really
• 6:58
Speaker 4: tough for him him to like land a chorus that
• 7:02
Speaker 4: we are like, this is a chorus. Maybe that's not
• 7:04
Speaker 4: a chorus. I don't know that one we played with
• 7:06
Speaker 4: a little bit more and we were like, oh, these
• 7:07
Speaker 4: are the best parts of the song. Let's really pull
• 7:09
Speaker 4: these out and repeat these things, even though they're not
• 7:11
  Speaker 4: really choruses. So I think I think there's definitely a
• 7:15
Speaker 4: more grown up writing style that we're doing. I think
• 7:18
Speaker 4: Matt has been spending a lot of time writing music.
• 7:21
Speaker 4: And the producer that's working out with us right now,
• 7:23
Speaker 4: Sean O'Keefe, who we worked with the Passes Don a
• 7:26
Speaker 4: bunch of stuff right now. He's done. He's just finished
• 7:27
Speaker 4: up the new Beach Bunny record. He he went deep dive.
• 7:32
Speaker 4: He loves I'm the movie, like he really loves that record.
• 7:34
Speaker 4: He's Knownice forever, he's made music with us before, but
• 7:38
Speaker 4: he did a deep dive on us and actually had
• 7:40
Speaker 4: we had. Me and Matt had a phone call with
• 7:42
Speaker 4: him where he asked us a lot of questions and
• 7:43
Speaker 4: that was actually like it was some of the answers.
• 7:46
Speaker 4: Some of the things made me go, oh shit, you're right,
• 7:48
Speaker 4: like where why did I stop doing that with my
• 7:50
Speaker 4: guitar playing? Or who wrote this? Or what?
• 7:53
  Speaker 2: What?
• 7:53
Speaker 4: What? Things that he want us to lean into that
• 7:56
Speaker 4: we maybe aren't leaning into anymore, because maybe we got
• 7:59
Speaker 4: because you know, we made we made even committed to
• 8:02
Speaker 4: memory following that up but even if it kills me
• 8:05
Speaker 4: was really kind of our sophomore thing because I'm in
• 8:06
Speaker 4: the movie we made before everybody was in the band totally.
• 8:09
Speaker 4: Some of the songs people were there for, but we
• 8:12
Speaker 4: had our whole life to write that album.
• 8:14
  Speaker 2: Committed to memory.
• 8:14
Speaker 4: We were like under time crunch and we made an album.
• 8:17
Speaker 4: So that one was and it just came alive because
• 8:18
Speaker 4: it was the first time we were all really working
• 8:20
Speaker 4: on it. So when we didn't even even kills me,
• 8:22
Speaker 4: that was like we were really worried. It was like,
• 8:26
Speaker 4: you know, just falling to the thing that so many
• 8:28
Speaker 4: people fall to, where you're worried about like writing catchy songs.
• 8:31
Speaker 4: You want to make sure you do well and you
• 8:33
Speaker 4: get you may get in your way a little bit
• 8:35
Speaker 4: uh doing that. So it was really nice to kind
• 8:40
Speaker 4: of look at what the best things or what he
• 8:42
Speaker 4: thought was the best things that we do, and what
• 8:44
Speaker 4: Tony does or what Matt does and which doesn't really
• 8:47
Speaker 4: like make sure we were getting those things and Jesse
• 8:50
Speaker 4: and like keyboard parts and not not and also like
• 8:53
Speaker 4: looking at it myself being like I don't want us
• 8:55
Speaker 4: to do this, and this is why things that we've done.
• 8:58
  Speaker 4: So yes, I think there's a I think we're still
• 9:00
Speaker 4: very us this new stuff that we're making. Yeah, I
• 9:04
Speaker 4: think that, Uh, someone who's heard stuff told me that
• 9:09
Speaker 4: they they don't they it's like the best of you know,
• 9:14
Speaker 4: I'm in the movie and conditced some memory Indynosaur life,
• 9:16
Speaker 4: like coming together as like but also now feeling not
• 9:19
Speaker 4: like we're doing what we did then, but like yeah, yeah.
• 9:23
Speaker 4: Also I think they said which just kind of like
• 9:25
Speaker 4: hurts my feelings a little bit what they said. They
• 9:27
  Speaker 4: said that, uh, I don't know what. I don't think
• 9:29
Speaker 4: they're expecting me to hear this, but they said, I
• 9:31
Speaker 4: don't know what what you did with what the what's
• 9:35
Speaker 4: happened with them, but somehow you've made them make the
• 9:38
Speaker 4: best music they've made in fifteen years. I don't know.
• 9:41
  Speaker 4: I don't know it's true.
• 9:42
Speaker 2: Someone who said that, I'll take that.
• 9:45
Speaker 4: I like it and I agree with it.
• 9:47
Speaker 1: It just hurts a little bit because it's like yeah,
• 9:51
Speaker 1: but no, yeah, it's.
• 9:53
Speaker 4: Meant in a very positive way because the people that
• 9:56
Speaker 4: you know, we're putting around with it. We can't really
• 9:58
Speaker 4: give any details of what we're up to, but everybody
• 10:01
Speaker 4: seems very excited that's been hearing it and been a
• 10:03
Speaker 4: part of what we're up to. So I'm really excited
• 10:06
Speaker 4: to finish it up and actually get a plan going forward.
• 10:08
Speaker 2: Was that definitely for me too?
• 10:12
  Speaker 5: Oh?
• 10:12
Speaker 2: Sorry for me too. I just feel like I just
• 10:14
Speaker 2: wanted to add one little thing. You know. We had like.
• 10:17
Speaker 1: Ten years to kind of like get some space and
• 10:20
Speaker 1: write just on our own, no pressure, no deadline, no nothing.
• 10:24
Speaker 1: And then to me, it's like it sounds like five
• 10:27
Speaker 1: guys that have had that time to kind of grow
• 10:30
Speaker 1: as songwriters. But also like I hear our influences equally
• 10:35
Speaker 1: as to hearing our own band in this in this record, Like,
• 10:38
Speaker 1: I refinitely definitely it's like really swirled up us and
• 10:41
Speaker 1: our influences like throughout, and I kind of love that.
• 10:44
Speaker 1: Like all the bands we talked about in interviews for
• 10:46
  Speaker 1: twenty some years.
• 10:48
Speaker 2: Definitely I hear them culminating in this album. I don't know,
• 10:51
Speaker 2: it's really fun to listen.
• 10:52
Speaker 4: Yeah for me, Yeah, well, I think there's a little
• 10:54
Speaker 4: bit of stuff like when we broke up as a band.
• 10:57
Speaker 4: For that period of time, I wrote, like I wrote
• 11:00
Speaker 4: songs by myself and I had like little ditties that
• 11:02
Speaker 4: I'd done, and Matt had the same thing and stuff,
• 11:04
Speaker 4: and we brought those in and kind of just made
• 11:06
Speaker 4: them songs and not like things that maybe if we
• 11:08
Speaker 4: had had tried to show it to someone as an idea,
• 11:10
  Speaker 4: I couldn't have been it's a whole thing. I played
• 11:13
Speaker 4: bass and guitar and stuff on it. It's not like
• 11:15
Speaker 4: we normally did that before. So a song might be
• 11:17
Speaker 4: like super my influence what I like to do. It's
• 11:20
Speaker 4: not like Matt wouldn't like that, but it wouldn't have
• 11:23
Speaker 4: been the same. And we made those songs like and
• 11:25
Speaker 4: we made the Matt songs, and we made justin songs
• 11:28
Speaker 4: that are like that with just critiques and making them
• 11:30
Speaker 4: our own, you know, songs that I thought I would
• 11:32
Speaker 4: have brought. There's one in particular that I thought I
• 11:34
Speaker 4: would have brought people like, you know, like Tony would
• 11:36
Speaker 4: be like, I don't want to play that because it's
• 11:37
Speaker 4: just this one beat that you know happens, And I'm like,
• 11:41
Speaker 4: I just kind of found a cool beat I liked,
• 11:43
Speaker 4: and I played to it and wrote the song and
• 11:44
Speaker 4: it just works. And like, I think a lot of
• 11:46
Speaker 4: that happened, and it's just like what Matt's saying, like
• 11:48
Speaker 4: you can really hear the influences of some of these
• 11:51
Speaker 4: bands that we really really like. And also I think
• 11:54
Speaker 4: justin Lyrically, He's been going through a lot of shit
• 11:56
Speaker 4: in his life that he hasn't talked about or living
• 12:00
Speaker 4: his life and going through things. I mean he's talks
• 12:02
Speaker 4: about it, just mental health stuff and things just a lot.
• 12:05
Speaker 4: And I think this album has been I don't think
• 12:08
Speaker 4: he meant it to be, but he ended up making it.
• 12:09
Speaker 4: It's really like a thing like you can hear a
• 12:12
Speaker 4: change in justin like lyrically and everything. There's songs sometimes
• 12:16
Speaker 4: are still the fun goofy justin, some songs are a
• 12:18
Speaker 4: little more serious. It's all over the things like I'm
• 12:21
Speaker 4: really excited to get this thing out there and see
• 12:23
Speaker 4: what happens and just be able to play new music.
• 12:26
  Speaker 5: Yeah, that's awesome.
• 12:27
Speaker 3: It really does sound like that time away is where
• 12:31
Speaker 3: you've all gone off to do your own sort of
• 12:32
Speaker 3: little things and then unintentionally come back and brought them
• 12:35
Speaker 3: all together in a way.
• 12:36
Speaker 5: And yeah, that's really cool.
• 12:38
Speaker 3: Yeah, and you guys briefly touched on your influences.
• 12:43
Speaker 6: What bands are you listening to at the moment?
• 12:46
Speaker 2: Oh, great Grandpa. They have a new record coming out soon.
• 12:54
Speaker 1: They just put out a new EP and their last
• 12:56
Speaker 1: Fool length is incredible they're from Seattle.
• 12:58
Speaker 2: Oh my god, come out. They're just so good.
• 13:02
Speaker 4: They are cool. He showed them to me. They're very cool.
• 13:05
Speaker 2: I've been listening to a level brilliant.
• 13:09
Speaker 4: I've been listening to a lot of Citizen and Matt
• 13:11
Speaker 4: from Citizen, the singer's side project, which is just his name,
• 13:15
Speaker 4: which I'm going to hack up if I say perks, Yeah, Mattress,
• 13:21
Speaker 4: I love it. I think I fell in love with
• 13:24
Speaker 4: Beach Bunny because I just I started listening to them
• 13:28
Speaker 4: because Sean the producers working as he did the last record,
• 13:30
Speaker 4: he's doing the new one that they just did, and
• 13:32
Speaker 4: it kind of turned me onto them and I checked
• 13:34
Speaker 4: him out. I was like, oh, I really like this.
• 13:35
Speaker 4: So my daughter's been showing me a bunch of interesting
• 13:38
Speaker 4: stuff too, because she's fourteen and she's getting the music.
• 13:41
Speaker 4: So she got me into Underscores. I don't know if
• 13:43
  Speaker 4: you've heard under it's very different. It's very different. It's
• 13:46
Speaker 4: like it's not not something I would normally it's but
• 13:50
Speaker 4: it's cool. It has a punk rockness to it in
• 13:52
  Speaker 4: a cool way, so it's it's I don't know, there's
• 13:54
Speaker 4: a bunch of cool stuff out there.
• 13:56
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's awesome. You know what's funny?
• 13:57
Speaker 3: The last person I interviewed also said beach funny, so
• 14:00
Speaker 3: and I haven't had funny, but I'm like, oh, now
• 14:02
Speaker 3: I've got to check him out as well.
• 14:05
Speaker 4: The last record is really really good, and then the
• 14:07
Speaker 4: one that she's just about to release, like everything I
• 14:09
Speaker 4: heard of fit is fucking great, so it's definitely worth
• 14:12
Speaker 4: checking out. She's like, it's like that sad girl pop
• 14:15
Speaker 4: music in a great way, Like it's kind of like
• 14:17
Speaker 4: it's very us in a weird way, but not us.
• 14:20
Speaker 4: There's something that reminds me of The songwriting is similar
• 14:23
Speaker 4: in a weird way. I don't know, this is something
• 14:25
Speaker 4: like that. I would can see us being like like
• 14:27
Speaker 4: when Justin writes just like a simple pop song that
• 14:30
Speaker 4: he doesn't really like do when he's writing kind of
• 14:32
Speaker 4: like these real basic stuff is really focused on when
• 14:35
Speaker 4: he's singing like that, Her stuff reminds me of those
• 14:38
Speaker 4: moments when he writes these little ditties that are like
• 14:40
Speaker 4: that and that are like the melodies are really soaring
• 14:43
Speaker 4: and strong, and I really.
• 14:45
Speaker 5: Well, that's cool. I'll definitely have to check them out.
• 14:48
Speaker 3: A bit of a different question, what's the weirdest or
• 14:51
Speaker 3: coolest thing you've been given to by a fan.
• 14:54
Speaker 4: Well, I don't know. This one's pretty strange. Someone someone
• 14:58
Speaker 4: this isn't to me, to Jesse, I need to give it.
• 15:00
Speaker 2: To him a keyboard on it.
• 15:02
  Speaker 4: It's a keyboard watch.
• 15:04
  Speaker 5: He's so cute.
• 15:05
  Speaker 4: Jesse is a keyboard player and he's upset. He's a
• 15:08
Speaker 4: watch collector kind of guy, and so someone made him
• 15:11
Speaker 4: like a knit watch that because he wasn't on the tour,
• 15:16
Speaker 4: because he is, he had to say, because his dad
• 15:18
Speaker 4: was going through some stuff and he wanted to make
• 15:20
Speaker 4: sure he was alone. So I just haven't seen Jesse
• 15:22
Speaker 4: and had this with me at the same time. That
• 15:25
Speaker 4: was a pretty weird one.
• 15:28
  Speaker 2: I was looking here. I thought I had a little
• 15:30
  Speaker 2: so I have.
• 15:31
Speaker 1: This little stash of like nostalgia stuff that I haven't
• 15:33
Speaker 1: put it away yet.
• 15:34
  Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, I think, I well, I shouldn't say
• 15:38
  Speaker 2: it's a.
• 15:38
Speaker 1: Doll of me, like a little oh yeah yeah, But
• 15:42
Speaker 1: there's a doll that has traveled around the world apparently
• 15:46
Speaker 1: like they like fans mailed it around the world and
• 15:50
Speaker 1: had a lip ring and everything from back when I
• 15:52
Speaker 1: had a Yeah, this firston gave it to me at
• 15:55
Speaker 1: the VIP on the last tour and it was something.
• 16:03
  Speaker 5: Of plastic.
• 16:04
Speaker 2: Yeah yeah, someone made it, gave.
• 16:07
Speaker 4: Me Yeah, broke off. I got up back to there's
• 16:17
Speaker 4: there's a lot of cute, little random things. You know,
• 16:19
Speaker 4: when we were bringing up some of our really old
• 16:27
Speaker 4: sometimes when you saw the venues will give you like
• 16:29
Speaker 4: a cake or something, but this venue gave us these
• 16:31
  Speaker 4: little heads.
• 16:33
  Speaker 2: The Bible heads.
• 16:35
Speaker 4: Uh yeah. These fans when we were breaking up, they
• 16:39
Speaker 4: did this thing where they made like, uh, I don't
• 16:41
Speaker 4: have it right here, but they made like a book,
• 16:44
Speaker 4: like a scrap book, where they all wrote like messages
• 16:46
Speaker 4: and mailed them all across to each other and built
• 16:48
Speaker 4: this whole thing that's like super intense and has a
• 16:51
Speaker 4: lot of information, just people that have been in our
• 16:53
Speaker 4: lives for a very very long time, some people that
• 16:56
Speaker 4: are like our good friends now that we see all
• 16:57
Speaker 4: the time, and some people that were big fans of
• 17:00
Speaker 4: ours that like travel to see us, but then you
• 17:02
Speaker 4: had kids and kind of moved down with their lives.
• 17:04
Speaker 4: But still I wrote really nice messages in there, and
• 17:06
Speaker 4: it's kind of overwhelming to look at.
• 17:08
Speaker 5: So it's making me emotional. I don't know why.
• 17:11
Speaker 4: It's hard to look at, especially at that time when
• 17:13
Speaker 4: we were like ending the band, I was like, I
• 17:15
Speaker 4: don't want to do this. Yeah, but it's very sweet
• 17:19
  Speaker 4: of them.
• 17:20
Speaker 5: Yeah, oh, how lovely. And what nice fans you've got.
• 17:23
  Speaker 5: That's so sweet.
• 17:25
  Speaker 2: We're lucky.
• 17:25
Speaker 4: Yeah, we're some amazing people and usually they're always coming
• 17:30
Speaker 4: from like the sweetest spot. Like we don't have a
• 17:32
Speaker 4: lot of bad fan interactions.
• 17:35
Speaker 5: Yeah, thank goodness, that's good.
• 17:37
Speaker 6: Yeah, touring can be grueling.
• 17:41
Speaker 5: How do you guys spend your downtime on the road.
• 17:43
Speaker 3: Aren't there any specific activities that help keep the energy
• 17:46
  Speaker 3: high between shows?
• 17:49
  Speaker 4: Nothing?
• 17:50
Speaker 1: Yeah, like do nothing or just like walk around the
• 17:53
Speaker 1: city see what's going on.
• 17:55
Speaker 2: I can't just sit in the venue or the no.
• 17:58
Speaker 4: I think it's too many years ago. I used to
• 18:00
Speaker 4: play I used to play video games a lot, and
• 18:02
Speaker 4: nowadays I like really not having things like that that
• 18:06
Speaker 4: take up my time and I like just like existing
• 18:10
Speaker 4: or hanging out or just My favorite time on two honestly,
• 18:13
Speaker 4: is after we play a show and everybody gets back
• 18:14
Speaker 4: on the front of the bus and it's just like
• 18:16
Speaker 4: sitting around watching stupid shit, laughing and goofing around. It's
• 18:19
Speaker 4: like the best part. But it's also great to go
• 18:21
Speaker 4: around and it also hang out with people and just
• 18:23
Speaker 4: like see the cities or like it can be a
• 18:26
Speaker 4: bit of a grind. Sometimes we get into routines where
• 18:28
Speaker 4: it's just like, you know, you only grab lunch and
• 18:30
Speaker 4: you know these days when we tour, normally we have
• 18:32
Speaker 4: to do VIP and stuff like that, which isn't not complaining,
• 18:35
Speaker 4: but it does eat up the day. So we have
• 18:37
Speaker 4: to like, you really have to fit in what you're
• 18:38
Speaker 4: doing and make sure you get some exercise. The walking
• 18:41
Speaker 4: is excellent just because you know the show is great
• 18:44
Speaker 4: for exercise, but if you did otherwise, you go by
• 18:47
Speaker 4: the day real quick and you're like, oh my god,
• 18:48
Speaker 4: I haven't like put my steps in at all. And
• 18:51
  Speaker 4: yeah it's nice.
• 18:53
  Speaker 5: Oh awesome.
• 18:54
Speaker 3: And do you have any favorite memories of the last
• 18:56
Speaker 3: time you were here in Australia.
• 19:00
  Speaker 4: I don't know. If I can't remember. It was a
• 19:02
Speaker 4: lot of fun that tour.
• 19:04
  Speaker 2: I don't know.
• 19:04
Speaker 4: We got something funny. They're mad, you remember something?
• 19:07
Speaker 2: Do you remember the fire that started on stage right
• 19:10
  Speaker 2: behind me?
• 19:12
Speaker 4: Know what the fuck?
• 19:15
Speaker 2: A little electrical box just caught on fire.
• 19:17
Speaker 4: I do vaguely remember this now that we're playing the
• 19:24
Speaker 4: stage monitor. They were using them as front fills at
• 19:27
Speaker 4: the Myth when we played there a long time and
• 19:29
Speaker 4: we like when we headlined there was tour someone was
• 19:32
Speaker 4: using them as front fills and pushing the too. It
• 19:35
Speaker 4: was too much and it started on fire during I said,
• 19:37
Speaker 4: someone just brought that up the other day and I
• 19:38
Speaker 4: was like, oh, yeah, you're right. There was a fire
• 19:41
Speaker 4: on stage while we're playing. That's really funny. I just
• 19:45
  Speaker 4: I just we just I mean, it's just fun. It's
• 19:47
Speaker 4: a fun place to go. Uh. We've had some great
• 19:50
Speaker 4: people we've met over the years uh there that have
• 19:53
Speaker 4: been awesome. I had a really fun like the sound
• 19:55
Speaker 4: Wave tours were always so amazing, the dude, because we
• 19:58
Speaker 4: got to hang out with bands that we would never
• 19:59
Speaker 4: have run into. We did a tour where we're like
• 20:01
Speaker 4: driving around with Sunnyday real Estate, Like that's probably my
• 20:03
Speaker 4: favorite thing is Like I went to get French fries
• 20:07
Speaker 4: with Nate from the Foo Fighters because he's in Sunny
• 20:10
Speaker 4: Day real Estate because I love that band too, And
• 20:12
Speaker 4: we just like hung out and talked about having children
• 20:14
Speaker 4: and it was like the and being in bands and
• 20:16
Speaker 4: it was the weirdest, like its just so normal, conver
• 20:19
Speaker 4: like the thing that that will never he probably doesn't,
• 20:21
Speaker 4: just like, oh I met that guy and we hung
• 20:23
Speaker 4: out for a little bit and whatever. They're like, it's
• 20:25
Speaker 4: just fun to like be in situations like that and
• 20:28
Speaker 4: meeting other people that do this and that are just
• 20:30
Speaker 4: as normal as everybody else, and it's awesome. I don't know,
• 20:34
Speaker 4: but no, Austra is awesome, great time. I mean every
• 20:37
Speaker 4: every tour there has been great. I don't think I've
• 20:39
Speaker 4: ever been left going, man, we shouldn't have come here.
• 20:42
Speaker 3: Yeah, no, you cover If you cover the major cities,
• 20:47
Speaker 3: I think you've covered most of the parts that you
• 20:49
Speaker 3: need to see, so right, uh sorry. If you guys
• 20:57
Speaker 3: want in motion the City soundtrack, what do you guys
• 20:59
  Speaker 3: think be doing.
• 21:01
Speaker 4: Like ever were ever in it?
• 21:03
  Speaker 5: Yeah?
• 21:05
Speaker 4: I don't know that. Yeah, it depends on a lot
• 21:11
Speaker 4: of things, Like if I had either I was stayed
• 21:14
Speaker 4: in food service, or I would have got my ass
• 21:17
Speaker 4: back together and gone to college and probably beating something
• 21:20
Speaker 4: in like graphic art type stuff. Mostly, it was a
• 21:26
Speaker 4: while there where I was kind of avoiding music for
• 21:28
Speaker 4: no reason, and then I was going to art school
• 21:31
Speaker 4: and I was like, and then I started a band.
• 21:34
  Speaker 4: Fuck that up?
• 21:36
Speaker 1: So you started a band and sucked up my plan
• 21:38
Speaker 1: too because I had to join your band.
• 21:41
Speaker 4: That that was because this is an art school, Like
• 21:44
Speaker 4: we were gonna we're looking for a bass player at
• 21:45
Speaker 4: the time, and our drummers Matt's friend from their friends
• 21:49
Speaker 4: to their little kids, and he was like, oh, Matt's
• 21:52
Speaker 4: going to art school. He doesn't want to pay any bands.
• 21:53
Speaker 4: And the Matt found out we were looking for a
• 21:54
Speaker 4: base was like, fuck, I'll do it. What the fuck.
• 21:57
  Speaker 2: Guys changed?
• 22:01
  Speaker 4: Yeah?
• 22:01
Speaker 3: Yeah, With such long longevity, with such a long history
• 22:09
Speaker 3: in the industry, how do you stay motivated as a band.
• 22:11
Speaker 6: What keeps the drive alive after so many years of
• 22:14
  Speaker 6: thank for music?
• 22:15
  Speaker 4: I have a big whips, a verbal whip. I mean,
• 22:23
Speaker 4: to be honest, it's really it's a tough game because
• 22:26
Speaker 4: you want to live your life and you want to
• 22:27
  Speaker 4: do things. I mean, I love music. I think Matt's
• 22:29
Speaker 4: always been doing music. He's never not like working on music.
• 22:31
Speaker 4: It's not like Matt, uh, But like I you know,
• 22:36
Speaker 4: this band. Bands are a strange thing, like they usually
• 22:38
Speaker 4: have like a person that like is the person that's
• 22:41
Speaker 4: like driving it. Whichever way you want to say that
• 22:45
Speaker 4: We've been a pretty much a job democracy. But you know,
• 22:48
  Speaker 4: early days, I like I had a vision and I
• 22:50
Speaker 4: was pushing towards that vision, and then things changed, uh
• 22:55
Speaker 4: you know, and then it was like not like that,
• 22:57
Speaker 4: and I was just a guy. And then it I
• 23:03
Speaker 4: realized that I had to become that guy again because
• 23:06
Speaker 4: in this point, nobody's like going. Nobody is like wake uping,
• 23:11
Speaker 4: where he's like, man, I'm ready to like plan a
• 23:12
Speaker 4: bunch of shit with the band and make it work right,
• 23:15
Speaker 4: and like they're like waiting because we've always had people
• 23:17
Speaker 4: telling us what you know, this is always the thing,
• 23:19
Speaker 4: So I think it's about I can't remember the question now,
• 23:22
Speaker 4: but yes, uh, you got to have someone driving the ship.
• 23:26
Speaker 4: Someone's got to be making shit happen. And for a
• 23:29
Speaker 4: while it was kind of basically doing all the managerial
• 23:31
Speaker 4: stuff with another guy who was doing most of the touring,
• 23:34
Speaker 4: like the more harder part of it, but I was
• 23:37
Speaker 4: handling a lot of the other stuff. But as we
• 23:40
Speaker 4: start doing more, I was like, oh, I want to
• 23:42
Speaker 4: be able to make these plans and do the things
• 23:44
Speaker 4: and not be overwhelmed and be an artist too. So
• 23:46
Speaker 4: we've hired people to help us, and I think, yeah,
• 23:50
Speaker 4: it's just about balancing between telling people what we need
• 23:54
Speaker 4: to do and listening to what they're saying. So it's
• 23:57
Speaker 4: not like it, you know, my goal is just so
• 24:00
Speaker 4: all of us do well right and have a great time.
• 24:03
  Speaker 4: It's just I don't want to have to be a
• 24:04
Speaker 4: guy that is facing people to get them to do stuff.
• 24:08
Speaker 4: But it's really, you know, it usually get older, life
• 24:11
Speaker 4: is hard, right I mean.
• 24:12
  Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, definitely.
• 24:14
Speaker 1: And I will say one thing that has definitely kept
• 24:16
Speaker 1: me motivated, and I think everybody else too, is like
• 24:19
Speaker 1: you can only tour so long on the same old songs,
• 24:22
Speaker 1: you know. And then we were like, you know what,
• 24:23
Speaker 1: new music that's really exciting, Like we have to learn
• 24:26
Speaker 1: all these songs and like we have to go you know,
• 24:29
Speaker 1: hopefully people will like them. And then the first time
• 24:32
Speaker 1: you play a song to a new crowd and if
• 24:33
Speaker 1: they respond to it, that's going to be a great feeling.
• 24:36
Speaker 2: Like I'm very excited for that because it's been a
• 24:38
Speaker 2: lot in a decade, you know.
• 24:40
Speaker 4: So yeah, yeah, no, it's crazy and and and it
• 24:43
Speaker 4: you know, it was a hard you know. It's like
• 24:44
Speaker 4: we always talk about like wanting to make more music
• 24:46
Speaker 4: and how cool it would be make cool records, but
• 24:49
Speaker 4: in to do it. It's hard, and like what Matt
• 24:50
Speaker 4: said is like we finally got to a point where
• 24:52
Speaker 4: it's like, look, we can't really keep doing what we're
• 24:55
Speaker 4: doing as much as we're doing it without making music.
• 25:00
Speaker 4: So it's a perfect time for us actually just to
• 25:02
  Speaker 4: pull this
