- 0:40Speaker 3: I hear people talking bad about the way we have
- 0:44Speaker 3: to live here in this country. Harping on a war
- 0:49Speaker 3: as we fight and griping about the way things ought
- 0:53Speaker 3: to be.
- 0:54Speaker 4: And I don't mind them switching sides and standing up
- 0:59Speaker 4: for things they believe in. When it's running down my country, man,
- 1:05Speaker 4: they're walking on the fighting side of me.
- 1:09Speaker 5: They're walking on the fighting side of me. Welcome in.
- 1:12Speaker 5: Glad to have you with us. And this just in.
- 1:17Speaker 1: The Roadrunners of UT San Antonio are walking into the
- 1:28Speaker 1: Alamo Dome as we speak. Getting ready for that big
- 1:33Speaker 1: South Florida matchup on ESPN tonight. Sam Houston and Liberty
- 1:40Speaker 1: are playing tonight as well. And don't forget that ESPN
- 1:44Speaker 1: 2 biggie with South Alabama and Arkansas State. This is
- 1:50Speaker 1: part of the two months of football every single night.
- 1:55Speaker 1: More tomorrow, of course. Iowa and Washington. Big Ten has
- 1:59Speaker 1: had no discussions tonight. about pursuing expansion, according to reports
- 2:06Speaker 1: out of their meeting. Commissioner Tony Petitti said today at
- 2:10Speaker 1: Big Ten Basketball Media Days that the conference, while aggressively
- 2:16Speaker 1: supporting the Protect College Sports Act, has had absolutely no
- 2:22Speaker 1: discussions taking place around expansion. This conference has 18 strong members.
- 2:29Speaker 5: Says Petitti. We're focused on that.
- 2:33Speaker 1: There's lots of things we can do inside the conference
- 2:36Speaker 1: to continue to grow the position that we have with
- 2:40Speaker 1: the 18 members.
- 2:44Speaker 5: Hunter Urasich is in trouble.
- 2:46Speaker 1: The athletic director at Arkansas, the best of Arkansas sports website,
- 2:51Speaker 1: saying today after polling the 10-member board of trustees, his
- 2:57Speaker 1: support is dwindling. The Razorbacks' football fortunes have not been
- 3:04Speaker 1: good for a while. They are 2-3 with a new coach,
- 3:08Speaker 1: Ryan Silverfield, who hasn't really received any honeymoon period for
- 3:14Speaker 1: the fans. But according to the best of Arkansas sports,
- 3:18Speaker 1: most of that ire has been directed as Juricic, who
- 3:24Speaker 1: is the chairman of the CFP committee. So we'll see
- 3:29Speaker 1: what happens there. The BYU offense has a big blow.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Star running back and last year's player of the year, L.J. Martin,
- 3:40Speaker 1: will be out for at least a month, according to ESPN.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Martin carried the ball just twice for 16 yards in
- 3:48Speaker 1: the win over TCU this last week. With 440 left
- 3:53Speaker 1: in the first quarter, he was pulled down awkwardly. jogged
- 3:56Speaker 1: off the field with a slight limp and did not return.
- 4:00Speaker 1: The Cougars without two of their top running backs since
- 4:03Speaker 1: Sione Moya has been sidelined with an injury he suffered
- 4:08Speaker 1: in week one. Martin was a big cog in the
- 4:12Speaker 1: BYU offense through the first three games. rushing 42 times
- 4:17Speaker 1: for 328 yards and three touchdowns.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Sam Adams is one of the players who will be named.
- 4:28Speaker 1: To the 2026 SEC Football Legends class. That generally happens
- 4:35Speaker 1: the weekend of the SEC Championship. Among others in the class,
- 4:41Speaker 1: Adams will enter with Former Heisman winners Billy Sims from
- 4:47Speaker 1: Oklahoma and Ricky Williams from Texas. The Cotton Bowl Hall
- 4:53Speaker 1: of Fame class has been announced. Rick Baker, the longtime CEO,
- 4:59Speaker 1: and Bruce Gadd, longtime president and former quarterback at Richardson
- 5:05Speaker 1: High School, is part of that group.
- 5:09Speaker 5: Along with Mack Brown.
- 5:10Speaker 1: The former Texas coach, Lance McElhaney, SMU quarterback, the Honey Badger,
- 5:17Speaker 1: Tyron Matthew from LSU, and Aaron Taylor from Notre Dame.
- 5:24Speaker 5: There is one.
- 5:26Speaker 1: playoff baseball game on the schedule tonight because there's only
- 5:31Speaker 1: one of those series left. The others ended last night.
- 5:35Speaker 1: The Guardians and the White Sox in Chicago with the
- 5:40Speaker 1: White Sox holding a two games to one lead after
- 5:44Speaker 1: the Guardians won a game yesterday to stave off elimination.
- 5:49Speaker 1: The Dodgers eliminated the Braves last night.
- 5:53Speaker 5: Four to one. They just keep being the Dodgers.
- 5:58Speaker 1: The Rays eliminated the Yankees 4-3. And late last night,
- 6:05Speaker 1: the Milwaukee Brewers took care of the Padres 3-1 to advance. So,
- 6:12Speaker 1: if you're keeping score, the Dodgers are in. The Rays
- 6:20Speaker 1: are in. The Brewers are in.
- 6:24Speaker 6: And it's the.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Guardians and the White Sox still playing. Major League Baseball
- 6:29Speaker 1: has proposed shortening its regular season from 162 to 154
- 6:36Speaker 1: games starting in 2029 and expanding the division series to
- 6:42Speaker 1: a best-of-seven format. The proposal is coming today as part
- 6:46Speaker 1: of negotiations with the MLB Players Association and on a
- 6:52Speaker 1: new collective bargaining agreement. MLB wants to allow higher-seeded teams
- 6:58Speaker 1: to choose their opponents, both in the wild card and
- 7:03Speaker 1: the division rounds.
- 7:05Speaker 5: I think that's a horrible idea.
- 7:07Speaker 1: The 154-game schedule would be a return to the MLB
- 7:12Speaker 1: calendar prior to 1960. MLB spokesperson Glenn Kaplan said in
- 7:19Speaker 1: a statement returning to a 154-game schedule would allow us
- 7:24Speaker 1: to introduce a weekly off day, which is good for
- 7:28Speaker 1: players' health, and also creating a new national broadcast window.
- 7:33Speaker 1: MLBPA said in a statement it's reviewing the proposals, adding
- 7:39Speaker 1: any changes are contingent on players' agreement to a salary cap,
- 7:45Speaker 1: which the union has balked at. Under today's proposal, Monday
- 7:51Speaker 1: would be a standard day off for most teams, with
- 7:55Speaker 1: the exception of televising one or two national broadcasts. Holidays
- 7:59Speaker 1: and other special events would negate the full league off day.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Teams that play on Monday would be.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Off on Thursday.
- 8:09Speaker 7: And.
- 8:10Speaker 1: George Foreman's house is for sale on Lake Houston in
- 8:15Speaker 1: Northeast Houston, a 13 and a half acre estate, which
- 8:20Speaker 1: includes 11,000 square foot garage that housed Foreman's collection of
- 8:28Speaker 1: 40 luxury cars, air conditioned dog kennel, a large pond
- 8:36Speaker 1: where he taught his grandchildren to fish and A stand-alone
- 8:40Speaker 1: hair salon built for his wife.
- 8:44Speaker 5: An air conditioning room to store fur coats.
- 8:48Speaker 1: A little more than 18 months after Foreman died at
- 8:52Speaker 1: age 76, he's preparing to sell the estate for $ 6 million.
- 8:59Speaker 1: There's an almost 12,000 square foot home on the market
- 9:04Speaker 1: this week on Lake Houston. Love me some George Foreman,
- 9:12Speaker 1: one of our great guests on the show over the years,
- 9:15Speaker 1: a friend of the show. We're going to hear from
- 9:21Speaker 1: Brent Venables coming up. We have got a high school report.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Tafiq Bayard, who was a huge addition last week, had
- 9:32Speaker 1: been hurt for the Aggie secondary. We are going to
- 9:38Speaker 1: hear from Bucky. We didn't do that earlier in the week.
- 9:42Speaker 1: We have our Clark Eisenhower outdoor edition with some really
- 9:48Speaker 1: nasty animals attacking this week and a trip to the
- 9:52Speaker 1: Everglades coming up. So we've got all that coming up
- 9:58Speaker 1: and I'm sure more. as we take a look around
- 10:02Speaker 1: the world of sports and what's going on. The Yankees
- 10:06Speaker 1: got swept, of course. We're all just sick about that
- 10:10Speaker 1: around here. But the Tampa Bay Rays are into the
- 10:17Speaker 1: next round of the playoffs. So, I mean, that kind
- 10:23Speaker 1: of gives hope to Rangers fans because the Rays don't
- 10:29Speaker 1: spend billions of dollars, you know.
- 10:32Speaker 5: They're pretty good.
- 10:34Speaker 1: You have to have a really good manager, which they did,
- 10:37Speaker 1: and the.
- 10:39Speaker 5: Rangers used to.
- 10:42Speaker 1: But, hey, I guess that's a story for another day.
- 10:48Speaker 1: Let's take a break. We'll come back. This portion of
- 10:51Speaker 1: the program is brought to you by ANCO Insurance.

- 12:01Speaker 10: Back through the years I go wandering once again Back
- 12:07Speaker 10: to the seasons of my youth I recall a box
- 12:13Speaker 10: of rags that someone gave us And how my mama
- 12:19Speaker 10: put the rags to use There were rags of many
- 12:25Speaker 10: colors But every piece was small And I didn't have
- 12:30Speaker 10: a coat. And it was a way down in the fall.
- 12:34Speaker 10: Mama sewed the rags together. So in every piece with love,
- 12:39Speaker 10: she made my coat of many colors. That I was
- 12:44Speaker 10: so proud of. As she sewed, she tore it from
- 12:48Speaker 10: the bottom.
- 12:48Speaker 1: That's the great Dolly Parton.
- 12:50Speaker 5: Thanks for being with us here on a Thursday. Coach Franz, family.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Sent me a few minutes ago the details of his
- 13:00Speaker 1: memorial service, which will be held Monday, October 19th at
- 13:07Speaker 1: the worship place at Sun City, where he had been
- 13:12Speaker 1: living in Georgetown. A reception, by the way, that's two
- 13:17Speaker 1: o'clock on the 19th of October. A reception would follow
- 13:22Speaker 1: at the Georgetown Community Center on from 3 to 6 p.m.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I'll remind you again that if you missed the interview
- 13:31Speaker 1: that we replayed from two years ago with Coach Fran,
- 13:34Speaker 1: we've had a lot of feedback on that. That is
- 13:37Speaker 1: up on our interview page on our website. It's also
- 13:41Speaker 1: up on our podcast from Tuesday afternoon in the second hour.
- 13:47Speaker 1: You can always listen in at chiphoward.com, zone1150. com, There's really
- 13:54Speaker 1: no excuse to miss anything here on this program. And
- 14:02Speaker 1: you shouldn't miss anything here. What's Jeff Traylor handing out?
- 14:06Speaker 11: Ribs?
- 14:07Speaker 6: What is he handing out?
- 14:09Speaker 12: Ribs!
- 14:11Speaker 1: Jeff Traylor is handing out ribs at the Alamo Dough.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I wish Jeff Traylor would come here to Kyle Field
- 14:18Speaker 1: and hand out ribs. You think Elko's going to hand
- 14:22Speaker 1: us some ribs? Before a game, maybe with the Citadel
- 14:27Speaker 1: on next Saturday.
- 14:30Speaker 5: I know he's listening.
- 14:31Speaker 1: So, Coach, this is a great idea, handing ribs out. Now,
- 14:37Speaker 1: Trailer was handing out ribs to fans. I want you, Coach,
- 14:41Speaker 1: to hand out ribs to the media. We used to
- 14:45Speaker 1: eat really well up there, but we don't anymore. So,
- 14:48Speaker 1: ribs would be really, really good. We'd appreciate that. Tomorrow,
- 14:55Speaker 1: I visit with Kirk Bowles, who will be covering... I
- 14:59Speaker 1: didn't ask him. I'm guessing close to his 50th Texas-Oklahoma
- 15:04Speaker 1: game in the Cotton Bowl Saturday. We'll visit with Kirk
- 15:07Speaker 1: Bowles tomorrow afternoon. I'll visit with Tony Catalina also tomorrow
- 15:12Speaker 1: afternoon in the 5 o'clock hour. Tony from 247 Sports
- 15:17Speaker 1: on with us on Fridays with the Aggie Football Preview.
- 15:22Speaker 5: Caleb will be in and Ryan will be in for
- 15:25Speaker 5: the show tomorrow.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Speaking of the Cotton Bowl, Texas and Oklahoma play Saturday. 1929,
- 15:36Speaker 1: they've been at the state fair. So what is that,
- 15:43Speaker 1: 97 years? That's my Richardson high math telling me it's
- 15:47Speaker 1: been 97 years straight. that they played at the State
- 15:52Speaker 1: Fair of Texas. They started playing long before that. But
- 15:58Speaker 1: that game will kick off at 2.30. We're going to
- 16:00Speaker 1: listen to Oklahoma football coach Brent Venables.
- 16:07Speaker 6: See you, everybody.
- 16:08Speaker 13: Excited about going down to Dallas, playing in the biggest,
- 16:14Speaker 13: best rivalry in all of college football. Really exciting game.
- 16:18Speaker 13: Have an opportunity to play a great opponent in Texas
- 16:22Speaker 13: and the team that they have this year. Really impressive,
- 16:28Speaker 13: both lines of scrimmage, how they've built the team and
- 16:31Speaker 13: developed it. Excellent job that Will Muschamp has done with
- 16:38Speaker 13: the defense. Really aggressive. Colin Simmons, probably the first defensive
- 16:44Speaker 13: player taken off the board in the very near future.
- 16:48Speaker 13: They've got playmakers at all three levels doing a fantastic
- 16:51Speaker 13: job playing complimentary defense, both in the front and the
- 16:55Speaker 13: back end. And then offensively, again, they've got great balance
- 16:59Speaker 13: in what they're doing, both their run game and what
- 17:02Speaker 13: they're doing, throwing the ball vertically to Wingo Coleman, the
- 17:06Speaker 13: tight ends, the backs. Steve's done a great job just
- 17:12Speaker 13: coordinating the offense and finding ways to get the playmakers
- 17:16Speaker 13: the ball in their hands. And then again, excellent in
- 17:21Speaker 13: the kicking game as well, like always. So it'll be
- 17:24Speaker 13: a great, great challenge for our guys. And our guys
- 17:26Speaker 13: are excited to have an opportunity to go back out
- 17:29Speaker 13: and compete and have an opportunity to go eight straight here,
- 17:35Speaker 13: starting with Texas this week. And a wonderful challenge, a
- 17:38Speaker 13: wonderful opportunity, a big challenge. But again, a wonderful opportunity
- 17:41Speaker 13: for our guys to get to playing our best football.
- 17:45Speaker 13: We haven't done that up to this point in time.
- 17:48Speaker 13: have been excellent in some different areas and different moments,
- 17:50Speaker 13: but this is an opportunity for us to be able
- 17:54Speaker 13: to play our best football. And we're going to need
- 17:56Speaker 13: to here this week to have an opportunity to win
- 17:59Speaker 13: and certainly thereafter.
- 18:01Speaker 6: We'll start with George. Yeah, Brent. Bill Biedenboe has coached
- 18:07Speaker 6: the offensive line.
- 18:07Speaker 14: Here for some time it seems over the last two
- 18:10Speaker 14: or three years you guys have had some instability with
- 18:12Speaker 14: that position group what do you maybe attribute that to
- 18:15Speaker 14: and what do you like about the development and trajectory
- 18:17Speaker 14: of that position group.
- 18:18Speaker 13: Under bill going forward yeah i like a lot of
- 18:21Speaker 13: the players that are in there now and certainly what
- 18:23Speaker 13: we've recruited uh it's been incredibly inconsistent very disappointing you
- 18:28Speaker 13: know as you build your football team that's a critical
- 18:31Speaker 13: place that is a place that probably requires the most
- 18:34Speaker 13: development of any position that uh you have on your roster,
- 18:40Speaker 13: and we haven't allowed for lots of different reasons. The
- 18:43Speaker 13: portal is the number one reason, and the opportunity to
- 18:48Speaker 13: our first couple of years, you had two free agent windows, and,
- 18:53Speaker 13: you know, so guys could come and go. So the
- 18:55Speaker 13: instability because of the climate was a big part of it.
- 18:59Speaker 13: Certainly didn't do a very uneven job when it comes
- 19:05Speaker 13: to– Choosing the guys that we've brought in here, way
- 19:10Speaker 13: too many guys are coming and going at that position group,
- 19:13Speaker 13: and we need continuity and consistency in order to develop
- 19:17Speaker 13: that group into what we want. We've got six guys
- 19:20Speaker 13: coming in, and the 27 class can be incredibly important
- 19:24Speaker 13: to bring back a good majority of the guys that
- 19:27Speaker 13: are already here that are young guys that are developing
- 19:31Speaker 13: as we speak. But it's been very unstable and certainly
- 19:35Speaker 13: not the kind of development that you want you know,
- 19:38Speaker 13: from top to bottom.
- 19:41Speaker 11: Yeah, Brett.
- 19:41Speaker 6: This time last year, John did everything he could to
- 19:43Speaker 6: play in this game. What did you learn about him.
- 19:45Speaker 15: Looking back to that time, and what have you seen
- 19:47Speaker 15: from him the last couple of weeks as he goes
- 19:49Speaker 15: through another challenge?
- 19:50Speaker 6: Time?
- 19:50Speaker 13: Again, a guy that loves to compete. He cares about
- 19:53Speaker 13: being a great teammate, being the leader of our football team,
- 19:57Speaker 13: playing well. He carries, again, a heavy weight when it
- 20:02Speaker 13: comes to that. Great self-awareness. Doesn't have his head in
- 20:05Speaker 13: the sand and cares about his opportunity and certainly cares
- 20:10Speaker 13: about you know, representing a place like Oklahoma at quarterback
- 20:13Speaker 13: is a big deal and nobody's more disappointed, you know, in, um,
- 20:19Speaker 13: not playing up to the standard that, um, he wants to,
- 20:22Speaker 13: he certainly is capable of, and certainly what, you know, uh,
- 20:27Speaker 13: university of Oklahoma has been used to, you know, over
- 20:29Speaker 13: a long period of time, but his best football is, uh,
- 20:32Speaker 13: has been really good. And, uh, we've got to help
- 20:35Speaker 13: him play a little more consistent. Everybody around him has
- 20:37Speaker 13: got to play better. And, um, Again, don't press as
- 20:41Speaker 13: much as anything else. Last week he had, again, a
- 20:46Speaker 13: good week and responded well. Not an easy thing to do,
- 20:52Speaker 13: but believe in him.
- 20:55Speaker 16: Brent, I wanted to ask you about special teams.
- 20:58Speaker 6: Obviously, Tate hasn't had a ton of opportunities yet. There
- 21:01Speaker 6: have been some tough kicks there. You guys had Jacobs.
- 21:06Speaker 17: Out punting against Georgia just how do you feel about
- 21:08Speaker 17: kind of where that group's at right now?
- 21:10Speaker 13: I feel good about it I'm obviously don't want to
- 21:12Speaker 13: miss any kicks ever and as well as take kick
- 21:16Speaker 13: last year he's missed a couple this year but I
- 21:19Speaker 13: feel really good again Jacob had an excellent day out
- 21:23Speaker 13: there in Athens as well again he was our starting
- 21:29Speaker 13: punter a little over a year ago and until it
- 21:32Speaker 13: wasn't after his injury. And Grayson came in, did a
- 21:35Speaker 13: great job. But I really feel like we have two
- 21:37Speaker 13: really good punters and a fantastic group of kickers as well.
- 21:44Speaker 16: For most of this, since you guys got here in 99,
- 21:46Speaker 16: you guys have had to jump on Texas, not just head-to-head,
- 21:50Speaker 16: but just overall success. Last three or four years, they've
- 21:53Speaker 16: risen up. How much tougher is it for Oklahoma to
- 21:57Speaker 16: succeed in football? Not just with the new SEC, but
- 22:01Speaker 16: when Texas is doing what they're doing.
- 22:04Speaker 13: Yeah, I think they can go hand in hand as
- 22:07Speaker 13: far as Oklahoma being successful and Texas being successful in
- 22:12Speaker 13: the mid-2000s when they won a national championship. They had
- 22:15Speaker 13: a very good run in the 2000s. Regardless of whatever,
- 22:23Speaker 13: I think we had won five in a row at
- 22:25Speaker 13: one point in time. But Both programs have been, you know,
- 22:30Speaker 13: very fruitful simultaneously. So I don't think one has to
- 22:37Speaker 13: do with the other. You know, one's success is one's demise.
- 22:41Speaker 13: I don't believe that at all. So I think going
- 22:44Speaker 13: to the SEC has created even more opportunity for both
- 22:47Speaker 13: programs to grow. Everybody's situation is different in transitioning. But,
- 22:55Speaker 13: you know, I think their success– is kind of on
- 22:58Speaker 13: their own as well as ours.
- 23:02Speaker 18: Jenny?
- 23:03Speaker 16: Brent, looking at Texas, it looks like they have an edge,
- 23:06Speaker 16: a toughness.
- 23:08Speaker 1: I don't know what word you.
- 23:09Speaker 13: An edge against us?
- 23:10Speaker 18: No, just an edge to their play.
- 23:12Speaker 6: I got you. I'm sorry.
- 23:13Speaker 19: An edge to their play this season, whether you look
- 23:15Speaker 19: at a guy like Simmons or the comeback against Ohio.
- 23:18Speaker 20: State or run defense or whatever you want to look at.
- 23:22Speaker 21: For you, do you see an area where that really.
- 23:25Speaker 15: is evident and what's the biggest challenge when you're facing
- 23:28Speaker 15: a team that does maybe seem to have.
- 23:30Speaker 20: A little bit of a grid or whatever word.
- 23:32Speaker 18: You want to ascribe to them?
- 23:33Speaker 13: Yeah, I think they're like a lot of teams we play.
- 23:35Speaker 13: They got good players that are developed that play at
- 23:38Speaker 13: a really high level. They're confident, play with great chemistry,
- 23:42Speaker 13: coached well, you know, play with great, you know, passion
- 23:47Speaker 13: and energy and intensity. But, Again, you have good players
- 23:52Speaker 13: that work hard and develop. I think you see them
- 23:55Speaker 13: play with that proverbial edge. And that's what good teams have.
- 24:01Speaker 13: You have players that are like that, units that play
- 24:03Speaker 13: with great toughness and great pride. And that's what they have, certainly,
- 24:09Speaker 13: on defense. They've had it the last few years.
- 24:11Speaker 22: Second row, Ryan Abraham.
- 24:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 24:16Speaker 15: Brent, obviously every year a bye week is a chance
- 24:20Speaker 15: to reevaluate some things and do some different work internally.
- 24:25Speaker 15: The work with the offense, though, the last week, how
- 24:27Speaker 15: is that compared to maybe some other years, especially like
- 24:31Speaker 15: maybe two years ago when you were struggling offensively going
- 24:34Speaker 15: into this game off a bye week, and just the
- 24:38Speaker 15: rebuilding or reworking and going back to fundamentals.
- 24:41Speaker 6: Things like that?
- 24:43Speaker 13: Yeah, a couple of years ago I think we had
- 24:44Speaker 13: nine starters out, On offense a little bit different certain
- 24:48Speaker 13: same struggle But yeah, we just again the bye weeks
- 24:53Speaker 13: are exactly what you know I feel like I've been
- 24:56Speaker 13: talking about the bye week for a while now But
- 24:59Speaker 13: you need to go back and look at what you're
- 25:00Speaker 13: doing from a tendency standpoint Efficiency standpoint what's good what
- 25:04Speaker 13: you can build on what needs to be corrected and
- 25:07Speaker 13: fix what you need to throw out and Get players
- 25:11Speaker 13: healthy You know mentally and physically both and coaches And then,
- 25:16Speaker 13: you know, as much as anything, you know, really focus
- 25:18Speaker 13: on fundamentals, giving guys opportunities. You continue to try to
- 25:22Speaker 13: build the depth on your team and anticipate opportunities for
- 25:27Speaker 13: more guys to be able to play. Give them the
- 25:29Speaker 13: opportunity to develop as well, but keep it about the basics,
- 25:33Speaker 13: the fundamentals, techniques, a lot of good on good as well.
- 25:38Speaker 13: And so that's really where we've spent our time. But
- 25:40Speaker 13: you know, how, how we can get into a rhythm,
- 25:42Speaker 13: you know, and we've been under a lot of pressure.
- 25:45Speaker 13: We need to apply the pressure and, uh, you know,
- 25:48Speaker 13: get back to, you know, what I know that we're
- 25:50Speaker 13: capable of, uh, offensively speaking. So, but everybody, you know,
- 25:54Speaker 13: had took the opportunity to, to improve, get better, gain
- 25:58Speaker 13: some confidence through the work. And, um, and again, every,
- 26:02Speaker 13: every week is a season of its own, as you've
- 26:04Speaker 13: seen in college football.
- 26:06Speaker 1: Sprint Venables embattled Oklahoma coach and, uh, You know, winning
- 26:15Speaker 1: this game would, I'm not going to say make their season.
- 26:19Speaker 5: They expect more than that at Oklahoma, for sure.
- 26:23Speaker 1: But it would help ease the pain and the pressure
- 26:28Speaker 1: on Brent Venables, without question. Texas, I believe, is correct,
- 26:35Speaker 1: has won three of the last four games. And I
- 26:38Speaker 1: don't think Oklahoma scored a touchdown in the three losses,
- 26:43Speaker 1: which is pretty remarkable. They hadn't scored a touchdown in
- 26:47Speaker 1: the last two games, which, you know, they've lost back-to-back.
- 26:53Speaker 1: And Sooner Nation is not real accepting of that. I
- 27:00Speaker 1: think there is more, let's say, dislike for the offensive
- 27:10Speaker 1: coordinator than there is for the head coach right now
- 27:13Speaker 1: arbuckle he's young and um you know you're always looking
- 27:19Speaker 1: for excuses there there's you know i've heard all kinds
- 27:25Speaker 1: of things that hey homan homan wiggins is not doing
- 27:29Speaker 1: a good job now i'll say the same thing about
- 27:32Speaker 1: Arbuckle than I will about Wiggins. When your quarterback is
- 27:35Speaker 1: playing like that, and Mateer's been terrible, he has played
- 27:41Speaker 1: very poorly.
- 27:43Speaker 5: For a guy who is.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Being mentioned early last year as a Heisman Trophy candidate,
- 27:50Speaker 1: which if you follow me, you know that I never
- 27:52Speaker 1: bought into that. I never thought he was that. And
- 27:57Speaker 1: that's certainly been proven. that he's not that. He just
- 28:01Speaker 1: needs to hold on to the freaking football. I mean,
- 28:05Speaker 1: he has to take care of the football. Against Georgia,
- 28:09Speaker 1: that was just a comedy of errors. And Georgia doesn't
- 28:12Speaker 1: need any help. I feel like this is going to
- 28:16Speaker 1: be a low-scoring game. I think Oklahoma's defense is really good.
- 28:20Speaker 1: They will play with as well as they can play Saturday.
- 28:24Speaker 1: I think Texas' defense is really good. Oklahoma's offense isn't
- 28:28Speaker 1: very good. Texas' offense isn't very good. I think it
- 28:33Speaker 1: will be a low-scoring game.
- 28:35Speaker 5: I really do.
- 28:36Speaker 1: And I saw the over and under at like 39
- 28:41Speaker 1: or something. And I would go under that. But this
- 28:47Speaker 1: is why I don't bet. It will probably be 50
- 28:49Speaker 1: to 49. But I would go under. I would take
- 28:53Speaker 1: the under of 39 or 39.5. Because I just don't
- 28:57Speaker 1: think there's going to be a lot of points scored.
- 28:59Speaker 5: Which means turnovers. Turnovers.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Always huge in a game like this because of the
- 29:09Speaker 1: swing from momentum from one end of the.
- 29:12Speaker 5: Field to the other. Sark described it as.
- 29:15Speaker 1: Playing a home game on your end and an away
- 29:18Speaker 1: game on their end.
- 29:20Speaker 5: And I think that's a fair description.
- 29:23Speaker 1: All right. We're going to have a high school report.
- 29:25Speaker 1: We're going to hear from Tafik Bayard coming up. Is
- 29:29Speaker 1: that a piñata?
- 29:31Speaker 5: I like that. In San Antonio, they're banging the pinata.
- 29:35Speaker 5: They hadn't been done too.
- 29:36Speaker 6: Well, though.
- 29:36Speaker 5: They hadn't got any candy out of it.
- 29:40Speaker 1: We've got the Clark Eisenhower outdoor edition coming your way
- 29:43Speaker 1: as well. Lots of animal attack stories, so stay with us.

- 30:38Speaker 1: She can exchange that, or you can just get a
- 30:41Speaker 1: monetary card, right, and let her pick. That's fine.
- 30:46Speaker 5: It's easy, okay?

- 31:11Speaker 21: This is C & J Barbecue.
- 31:14Speaker 11: Okay, so for the ad, I'm thinking fog machines, laser lights,
- 31:18Speaker 11: maybe a.
- 31:19Speaker 18: Do kids eat free?
- 31:20Speaker 6: Uh, yes.
- 31:21Speaker 22: Like, actually free?
- 31:22Speaker 6: Yes, every Wednesday night.
- 31:24Speaker 22: So I can get free barbecue?
- 31:26Speaker 5: That's how kids eat free works, buddy.
- 31:28Speaker 7: Wednesday's my favorite day now!
- 31:30Speaker 10: See?
- 31:30Speaker 18: No fog machine needed.
- 31:32Speaker 6: Oh, man.
- 31:33Speaker 21: Kids eat free every Wednesday night at C & J Barbecue.
- 31:36Speaker 21: Great food, happy kids, C & J Barbecue. Because dinner
- 31:39Speaker 21: shouldn't be another battle.
- 31:42Speaker 11: It's Tex-Ax Live, brought to you by David Gardner's Jewelers.
- 31:45Speaker 11: I really liked K.J.
- 31:47Speaker 6: Edwards. Yeah.
- 31:50Speaker 18: 11 carry, 66 yards.
- 31:51Speaker 13: That 20-yard run was just something we hadn't seen this year.
- 31:55Speaker 3: And maybe, again, with the speedy show, maybe not since A-Chain.
- 32:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 32:02Speaker 13: It looked very A-Chain-esque. And I like that some are
- 32:04Speaker 13: calling K-Chain.
- 32:05Speaker 5: Tex-Ax Live, brought to you by David Gardner's Jewelers.
- 32:08Speaker 20: Hang out weekdays from 8 to 11 on The Zone.
- 32:16Speaker 22: I'm a rolling stone All alone and lost For a
- 32:26Speaker 22: life of sin I.
- 32:30Speaker 18: Have paid the cost.
- 32:33Speaker 3: When I pass by All the people say Welcome into
- 32:39Speaker 3: the High School Report.
- 32:41Speaker 23: I'm Caleb Rapley and today we are jumping out to
- 32:43Speaker 23: the Polaris Fun Center phone line to visit with the
- 32:46Speaker 23: head coach of the College Station Lady Cougars volleyball team,
- 32:49Speaker 23: Miss Ashley Davis. Coach, thanks for joining me today.
- 32:52Speaker 18: Of course.
- 32:53Speaker 23: So we're getting pretty close to the end of the
- 32:54Speaker 23: regular season now. What do you think are some of
- 32:57Speaker 23: your biggest strengths as a team and what are just
- 32:59Speaker 23: some of your takeaways from this season so far?
- 33:02Speaker 12: Yeah, I think that, you know, we played three really,
- 33:06Speaker 12: really tough tournaments to get us prepared for our district.
- 33:12Speaker 12: And we battled through some injuries and, you know, have
- 33:19Speaker 12: split with Lake Creek and just excited to really be
- 33:26Speaker 12: two wins away from probably securing a playoff spot.
- 33:29Speaker 23: So one thing about volleyball that makes it different from
- 33:31Speaker 23: other sports is is just the total number of games
- 33:35Speaker 23: that a high school volleyball team can play in one season.
- 33:37Speaker 23: It's kind of staggering, even compared to sports like basketball
- 33:40Speaker 23: and baseball that play multiple times in a week. There's
- 33:43Speaker 23: not really a whole lot of other sports where you
- 33:45Speaker 23: can play three matches in one day pretty regularly. In
- 33:49Speaker 23: any sport in high school athletics, there's always a lot
- 33:51Speaker 23: of roster turnover with seniors graduating. I know you had
- 33:54Speaker 23: seven seniors on your team last year. So how much
- 33:56Speaker 23: of an advantage is it for you getting to play
- 33:59Speaker 23: in all of these tournaments now so that you can
- 34:00Speaker 23: see these young players that maybe weren't on varsity last
- 34:03Speaker 23: year get them in the game a lot before district play.
- 34:07Speaker 23: How much of an advantage is that for you as
- 34:08Speaker 23: a coach, having that many games to look back on
- 34:10Speaker 23: when you're putting your lineups together in district play and
- 34:13Speaker 23: the games that are going to decide whether or not you.
- 34:15Speaker 6: Make the playoffs?
- 34:16Speaker 12: Yeah, I think that obviously we lost an All-American last year,
- 34:21Speaker 12: and so that was finding our groove, and she was
- 34:24Speaker 12: a four-year starter as a setter, and so like I
- 34:28Speaker 12: think that our setters, Grace Conley and Cheyenne Tronza, really
- 34:34Speaker 12: have stepped up into that role. And I think that
- 34:38Speaker 12: playing that many matches clearly gives us an advantage to
- 34:44Speaker 12: get better, right, and progress better. as far as seeing
- 34:50Speaker 12: what lineups work, which lineups don't work, and things like that.
- 34:55Speaker 12: And so I think a lot of these kids are
- 34:57Speaker 12: just used to it by playing club. That's a regular
- 35:01Speaker 12: weekend for them to play 10 matches.
- 35:04Speaker 18: On a weekend.
- 35:05Speaker 12: And in club season, they may play 80 matches. In
- 35:08Speaker 12: high school season, they play 50. So they're playing like
- 35:09Speaker 12: professional schedules year-round. for some of these kiddos. And so
- 35:18Speaker 12: I think for us, it's just like managing, you know,
- 35:23Speaker 12: kids burning out, managing their bodies, managing a lot of
- 35:27Speaker 12: different things that are unique to our sport versus some
- 35:30Speaker 12: other sports that are going on, you know?
- 35:33Speaker 22: Right.
- 35:34Speaker 23: So you're in your fifth year as the head coach
- 35:36Speaker 23: at College Station. This is a program that's really been
- 35:39Speaker 23: a perennial powerhouse. I don't think College Station has ever
- 35:41Speaker 23: missed the playoffs in volleyball since CSHS was founded. So
- 35:46Speaker 23: with that success, you know, there does come a little
- 35:48Speaker 23: bit of pressure. So how do you handle that? Having
- 35:51Speaker 23: these kids that grew up watching Lady Cougar volleyball, it's
- 35:54Speaker 23: just an expectation to make the playoffs. But how do
- 35:56Speaker 23: you handle that as a coach?
- 35:58Speaker 18: It's culture. I think it's tradition. I think.
- 36:03Speaker 12: Those things definitely factor into what we're doing. There's a
- 36:07Speaker 12: standard set that's a standard of winning, right? And excellence
- 36:14Speaker 12: really is what it is.
- 36:16Speaker 18: And so when we.
- 36:16Speaker 12: Set that standard of excellence, that's what we're trying to
- 36:19Speaker 12: achieve every single year.
- 36:22Speaker 18: And they get it. So it's nice, right?
- 36:24Speaker 12: So they're putting in work in the off season to
- 36:26Speaker 12: make sure that they're ready for the season. And they
- 36:30Speaker 12: kind of know what it takes because of the people
- 36:32Speaker 12: that have come before them. And so I think that
- 36:35Speaker 12: that's really a testament to how the school opened. Even
- 36:39Speaker 12: though this is year five for me, there were coaches
- 36:42Speaker 12: that established this before me. So that was nice, right?
- 36:45Speaker 12: And so I just get to build off of what
- 36:48Speaker 12: was already established in our culture as a school, honestly.
- 36:53Speaker 18: We have our Cougar values that we live by throughout
- 36:56Speaker 18: the sports.
- 36:58Speaker 12: And, you know, there's a unity there between and across
- 37:03Speaker 12: sports here.
- 37:05Speaker 23: What are some goals that you set for this team
- 37:07Speaker 23: at the beginning of the season? And how would you
- 37:09Speaker 23: say that they've lived up to those goals this year?
- 37:12Speaker 12: We kind of typically start with a 31 season. That's
- 37:16Speaker 12: our overarching goal from a numerical standpoint. You know, district
- 37:23Speaker 12: champions is something that we strive for every single year.
- 37:28Speaker 12: Sometimes we fall short, but if we're striving to be
- 37:30Speaker 12: district champions and we fall short by one or two places,
- 37:34Speaker 12: then we get ourselves in the playoffs, and we know
- 37:37Speaker 12: that we're in a really tough district.
- 37:39Speaker 18: So we know that we will be prepared.
- 37:42Speaker 12: For the first three rounds whenever we– get into playoffs.
- 37:47Speaker 12: And then hopefully we match back up with our own
- 37:50Speaker 12: district in the regional final to go to state.
- 37:52Speaker 18: Right.
- 37:53Speaker 12: And that has been the last two years that has
- 37:55Speaker 12: been the case. And that's, that's the goal for this
- 37:58Speaker 12: year too, is to get ourselves to that place.
- 38:01Speaker 18: Um, and then week by week, just trying to get
- 38:05Speaker 18: better and.
- 38:05Speaker 12: Setting weekly goals to do that and not getting complacent
- 38:09Speaker 12: within the season.
- 38:10Speaker 23: So only five regular season matches left in this season.
- 38:14Speaker 23: The first of which is tomorrow night going on the
- 38:17Speaker 23: road to play Montgomery. You matched up against the Lady
- 38:20Speaker 23: Bears about a month ago, lost in four sets at home.
- 38:23Speaker 23: So what is it going to take to go to
- 38:24Speaker 23: Montgomery and get a win tomorrow night?
- 38:26Speaker 18: Getting percentage has to be a little bit better.
- 38:28Speaker 12: I mean, that's a lot of times where, you know,
- 38:34Speaker 12: errors in volleyball, right?
- 38:35Speaker 18: You see these big point swings, even in collegiate.
- 38:38Speaker 12: Volleyball, where somebody will win 25-15 and then the next
- 38:41Speaker 12: set they lose 25.
- 38:43Speaker 18: 15, 25.
- 38:45Speaker 12: And so I think it's just a consistency and some
- 38:48Speaker 12: of our younger pieces and they're getting there.
- 38:51Speaker 7: Right.
- 38:52Speaker 18: And so I, I'm happy with our progress.
- 38:55Speaker 12: I'm happy with our personnel and what we're intending to do.
- 38:59Speaker 12: So I think for us in that game, um, we
- 39:02Speaker 12: just had too many hitting errors and that's really the difference.
- 39:06Speaker 12: I think the last three sets were all determined by
- 39:08Speaker 12: two points. Um, the first set we lost 2025 and
- 39:11Speaker 12: the next three we We're determined within two points. And
- 39:16Speaker 12: so I think that we can't miss as many serves.
- 39:21Speaker 12: We've got to pass probably above a two. And then
- 39:25Speaker 12: we have to hit above a 200. And I think
- 39:28Speaker 12: if we can do those things, then we will.
- 39:30Speaker 6: That match. All right, Coach.
- 39:31Speaker 23: Well, I appreciate your time today, and good luck to
- 39:33Speaker 23: your Lady Cougars the rest of the season.
- 39:35Speaker 15: All right.

- 41:10Speaker 1: high school news and notes and interviews with the head coaches.
- 41:16Speaker 1: Coming up, Tafik Bayard, and he made his presence felt
- 41:23Speaker 1: against Arkansas last Saturday. He will need to do the
- 41:27Speaker 1: same against Austin Simmons and the Tigers on Saturday morning
- 41:34Speaker 1: with the 11-8 kick in Columbia. We have got the
- 41:40Speaker 1: Oilers report brought to you by Oscar & Sons and
- 41:45Speaker 1: Citizens State Bank.
- 41:48Speaker 7: Even a so-called minor car wreck could turn your life
- 41:51Speaker 7: upside down, but Oscar & Sons Body Shop has been

- 41:57Speaker 7: of motorists all over the Brazos Valley. Patrick and Tracy

- 42:19Speaker 20: The Houston Texans are heading to Nashville this weekend in
- 42:21Speaker 20: search of their first win this year, and now we're
- 42:23Speaker 20: seeing some changes with the play call. Head coach Tobigo
- 42:26Speaker 20: Ryans announced yesterday that he will be taking over as
- 42:28Speaker 20: the defensive play caller instead of the defensive coordinator Matt Burke.
- 42:32Speaker 20: The Texans entered this season as one of the most
- 42:34Speaker 20: feared defenses in the league after a top five finish
- 42:36Speaker 20: a year ago. Now the squad is looking for answers
- 42:38Speaker 20: with over 27 points allowed per game. Hopefully the new
- 42:41Speaker 20: play calling is the fix. Texans General Manager Nick Casario
- 42:45Speaker 20: joined Texans Radio yesterday to discuss how the team is
- 42:47Speaker 20: dealing with the noise and pressure surrounding the team.
- 42:50Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, look, you've got to be disciplined.
- 42:51Speaker 25: You just have to go about your process. There's nothing
- 42:53Speaker 25: that we can do or change, kind of what's happened
- 42:55Speaker 25: here the last four weeks. All we can do is
- 42:56Speaker 25: sort of understand what has happened and then moving forward,
- 42:59Speaker 25: try to figure out and come up with some solutions. But,
- 43:01Speaker 25: I mean, everybody approaches their, I would say, day-to-day and
- 43:04Speaker 25: their business a little bit differently, but you've just got
- 43:06Speaker 25: to be disciplined and focused on where you are today.
- 43:08Speaker 25: What's in front of you? You just have to go
- 43:10Speaker 25: through your process.
- 43:11Speaker 20: Kickoff between the Texans and Titans is set for noon
- 43:13Speaker 20: Sunday with coverage on CBS. With your Houston Texans report,
- 43:16Speaker 20: I'm Jett Nelson.

- 44:53Speaker 22: Some people say a man is made out of mud.
- 44:58Speaker 22: A poor man's made out of muscle and blood. Muscle
- 45:02Speaker 22: and blood and skin and bones. A mind that's weak
- 45:06Speaker 22: and a back that's strong. You load 16 tons, what
- 45:10Speaker 22: do you get? Another day older and deeper in debt. St. Peter,
- 45:16Speaker 22: don't you call me cause I can't go. I owe
- 45:19Speaker 22: my soul to the company store.
- 45:26Speaker 1: That's the old pee-picker himself, Tennessee Ernie Ford.
- 45:31Speaker 5: Let me see.
- 45:33Speaker 28: I'm going to guess 1961. 60. That's my guess.
- 45:47Speaker 5: Could be earlier. What was your guess?
- 45:53Speaker 6: 60, 61.
- 45:55Speaker 5: Released in 1955. Oh, okay. All right. Okay. Darn it.
- 46:02Speaker 5: I'm usually better than that. Okay.
- 46:05Speaker 1: By the way, Bill O'Reilly is going to join us
- 46:09Speaker 1: a week from.
- 46:12Speaker 11: Monday?
- 46:14Speaker 5: Maybe two weeks from Monday, actually.
- 46:18Speaker 1: Confronting America is his new book, and he will be
- 46:21Speaker 1: with us coming up to talk about that book.
- 46:24Speaker 5: Okay. I told you.
- 46:27Speaker 1: Topeak Bayard has had some injuries early in the year,
- 46:30Speaker 1: but he showed out on Saturday against Arkansas and visited
- 46:35Speaker 1: with reporter types this week.
- 46:38Speaker 6: Back healthy and just being able to get out there
- 46:39Speaker 6: a little more. Yeah, it's been good. I've been dealing
- 46:43Speaker 6: with some injuries coming into fall camp. Before the first
- 46:46Speaker 6: game of the first week, I banged up my ankle
- 46:47Speaker 6: a little bit. So just getting back in the routine,
- 46:51Speaker 6: getting back in shape, and getting back to doing what
- 46:53Speaker 6: I do. When did you feel like things were back
- 46:57Speaker 6: to 100%.
- 46:57Speaker 27: Again, that you'd be able to have the impact you
- 47:00Speaker 27: did in the last game?
- 47:01Speaker 6: Yeah, I've been healthy since Kentucky. So just getting back
- 47:05Speaker 6: in the groove of things, just being available whenever my
- 47:07Speaker 6: number's called. How much do you enjoy kind of being
- 47:10Speaker 6: that hard-hitting safety? Is that always kind of your thing? Yeah,
- 47:13Speaker 6: I love it. You know, it's funny. I just translated
- 47:16Speaker 6: into being this type of safety, hard-hitting safety, you know.
- 47:19Speaker 6: When I got to college and high school, I just
- 47:20Speaker 6: played center field, you know, caught a lot of interceptions,
- 47:22Speaker 6: you know. You know, I ain't the 6'3, 6' long
- 47:25Speaker 6: range of safety. So, you know, I had to adapt,
- 47:26Speaker 6: you know, putting my head in there and getting physical.
- 47:29Speaker 23: What do you kind of see from, I know it's
- 47:31Speaker 23: your first year here, but what do you kind of see, like,
- 47:33Speaker 23: the biggest, best thing that's happened.
- 47:35Speaker 6: Since you got here? Definitely just with the conditioning program.
- 47:38Speaker 6: Coach Moffitt does a great job getting the guys in shape,
- 47:40Speaker 6: getting the guys bigger, getting the guys ready to go
- 47:42Speaker 6: for the season. In my past couple of years, Just conditioning,
- 47:46Speaker 6: you know, it was kind of up and down, but
- 47:47Speaker 6: here it's like a steady, you know, and they take
- 47:49Speaker 6: care of you on the field and off the field,
- 47:51Speaker 6: nutrition and everything. So I'd say that's been the biggest
- 47:53Speaker 6: part for me.
- 47:54Speaker 20: Kentucky and LSU secondary gave up a lot of explosive plays,
- 47:58Speaker 20: not as much against Arkansas.
- 48:00Speaker 6: Why would you say that changed? Communication. You know, that
- 48:04Speaker 6: was the biggest thing. You know, the plays we let
- 48:06Speaker 6: up versus LSU, the plays we let up versus Kentucky
- 48:08Speaker 6: were all our fault. You know, we didn't communicate. We
- 48:10Speaker 6: didn't see this guy do this. We didn't see this
- 48:12Speaker 6: guy do that. So, You know, we went in there
- 48:14Speaker 6: last week on Wednesday. You know, we watched it as
- 48:15Speaker 6: a team, as a defensive back. You know, we got everything.
- 48:19Speaker 6: All the X's, though, ironed out, so we were.
- 48:21Speaker 15: Ready to go against Arkansas.
- 48:27Speaker 6: I don't think it was anything different. I think we
- 48:29Speaker 6: just dialed in and we just, you know, executed. In
- 48:32Speaker 6: the past, we haven't executed coming out of the half.
- 48:34Speaker 6: This week, we executed coming out of the half. I
- 48:36Speaker 6: think that was good. You have a.
- 48:40Speaker 3: Doug, that would be reputation that you were talking about earlier.
- 48:43Speaker 6: It's very physical safety.
- 48:45Speaker 3: Why don't you give us the scouting report on you
- 48:48Speaker 3: as a, you know, in pass coverage.
- 48:51Speaker 6: I can do it all in pass coverage. You know,
- 48:53Speaker 6: man-to-man on tight ends. I can play the deep third.
- 48:54Speaker 6: I can play the half. I can play the hook.
- 48:56Speaker 6: You know, I can do whatever the coaches ask me.
- 48:59Speaker 6: I guess the hard hitting is just what I do best,
- 49:03Speaker 6: I guess you should say. But, you know, I can
- 49:04Speaker 6: do it all in pass coverage too.
- 49:06Speaker 29: Do you feel like y'all are better secondary with having
- 49:09Speaker 29: you and Chance Collins kind of in the mix and
- 49:11Speaker 29: being able to rotate.
- 49:12Speaker 6: Guys through a game? Yeah, it's always good to have
- 49:15Speaker 6: bodies you know, that can play. You know, me and Chance,
- 49:17Speaker 6: you know, guys that are new to coming in this program,
- 49:19Speaker 6: you know, sitting behind Rat and Brooks, you know, those
- 49:21Speaker 6: guys have been in the system for two, three years now. So,
- 49:23Speaker 6: you know, they know the ins and outs and everything,
- 49:25Speaker 6: you know, and they've always been very helpful. You know,
- 49:27Speaker 6: me asking Rat Marcus a question, he's always been very helpful.
- 49:30Speaker 6: Asking Dot a question, he's been very helpful. Chance has
- 49:32Speaker 6: done a great job, you know, being a young guy
- 49:33Speaker 6: coming up and just being a sponge, really, and gravitating
- 49:36Speaker 6: on all this information.
- 49:38Speaker 21: Talk about some of the physical changes this offseason.
- 49:40Speaker 14: I'm just curious, like, did you have any serious, like,
- 49:43Speaker 14: weight changes or, you know, lifting gains that you had?
- 49:46Speaker 6: Yeah, I think last year I played the majority of
- 49:50Speaker 6: the season around, like, 189, 190. Now I'm, like, 198,
- 49:54Speaker 6: 200 pounds. So about a 10-pound difference, you know, it
- 49:57Speaker 6: helps with these bigger bats in the SEC. You know,
- 49:59Speaker 6: guys are a lot bigger, a lot stronger. You can't
- 50:01Speaker 6: just throw a shoulder and you have to wrap up.
- 50:03Speaker 6: So that definitely was a big thing for me. You know,
- 50:05Speaker 6: Elko spoke about how you put being in the lineup,
- 50:07Speaker 6: Elijah got to be more multiple on the safety room.
- 50:09Speaker 24: Do you see kind of you guys being evolving in
- 50:11Speaker 24: the back end maybe when you're on the field compared
- 50:14Speaker 24: to early in the year?
- 50:16Speaker 6: It's kind of the same defense. You know, it's a
- 50:18Speaker 6: little different. You know, we could move Rat to Rover,
- 50:20Speaker 6: you know, because he's a bigger guy. He can get
- 50:21Speaker 6: in the box. He can do different things. But it's
- 50:23Speaker 6: kind of the same defense. Do you remember at what
- 50:26Speaker 6: point you really started relishing contact? Say that one more time.
- 50:29Speaker 6: Do you remember at what point in your career you
- 50:31Speaker 6: really started just loving the hit? Yeah, it's funny. I
- 50:33Speaker 6: was thinking about this last night. My freshman year of college,
- 50:38Speaker 6: we had an inside run period, and I was going
- 50:41Speaker 6: against Naquan Wright, a running back at USF back then.
- 50:45Speaker 6: And I know all y'all seen a hit of him
- 50:47Speaker 6: running at a player that played for Alabama over and
- 50:51Speaker 6: stuff like that. So I always had that in the
- 50:52Speaker 6: back of my hand, like, oh, I don't want to
- 50:53Speaker 6: be that guy. But one day we had an inside run,
- 50:55Speaker 6: and I was the safety going in. And I remember
- 50:58Speaker 6: I went in, and I closed my eyes, and my
- 51:00Speaker 6: defensive coordinator came behind me and said, you're soft, you're soft.
- 51:04Speaker 6: And ever since then, I didn't like that. Coming from
- 51:07Speaker 6: the defensive coordinator calling me soft as a safety, that
- 51:09Speaker 6: didn't sit well with me. So ever since then, I've
- 51:10Speaker 6: been putting my helmet on stuff, putting my chest on stuff.
- 51:13Speaker 6: So that's it. Obviously, football runs in your family.
- 51:16Speaker 4: What is the biggest thing they've taught you that you've implemented.
- 51:20Speaker 6: In your game? Yeah, probably just to stay ready. Outside
- 51:24Speaker 6: the X's and the O's, always stay ready and keep
- 51:26Speaker 6: your body right. Me being in college for my fourth
- 51:29Speaker 6: year now, that's crazy. Being in college four years now,
- 51:32Speaker 6: I dealt with a little bit of injuries. So just
- 51:34Speaker 6: trying to stay ready, being healthy, communication, all those big
- 51:37Speaker 6: things play a part. Missouri has a very productive pass.
- 51:40Speaker 3: What's it going to take from you guys to keep
- 51:44Speaker 3: that somewhat contained?
- 51:46Speaker 6: Yeah, we've got to put pressure on this guy. He's
- 51:48Speaker 6: real comfortable back there. Austin Simmons, he does a great
- 51:51Speaker 6: job of looking and scanning the whole field. We have
- 51:54Speaker 6: to get pressure on him, make him uncomfortable, get him
- 51:56Speaker 6: off his spot, move him around. If he just sits there...
- 51:58Speaker 6: pack the ball a day and look for a season
- 51:59Speaker 6: that's going to be a long day. So we've got
- 52:01Speaker 6: to put pressure. Could that pressure, could you be involved
- 52:03Speaker 6: in that? Oh yeah, for sure. That's something that I've
- 52:05Speaker 6: done in my background was put pressure on the quarterback
- 52:07Speaker 6: coming off the blitz. I know blitzing and stuff like that,
- 52:10Speaker 6: so we just got to put pressure on this kid.
- 52:12Speaker 23: What's maybe the biggest thing you hope the defense as
- 52:14Speaker 23: a whole can take from last week's game?
- 52:17Speaker 14: A positive result after a couple of tough weeks moving forward?
- 52:21Speaker 6: Oh yeah, just playing together, gelling. The first couple of
- 52:25Speaker 6: weeks we We've seen a little bit of us playing together, but,
- 52:28Speaker 6: you know, last week kind of brought it all together.
- 52:29Speaker 6: I think a little bit helped with that, you know,
- 52:31Speaker 6: going on film on the last Wednesday and watching it
- 52:34Speaker 6: as a defense in the background. So just playing together
- 52:36Speaker 6: and definitely playing fast.
- 52:37Speaker 23: Was there a point in the game last week where
- 52:39Speaker 23: you really could sense that you.
- 52:40Speaker 6: Guys were playing together? Yeah, play three. When we caught
- 52:43Speaker 6: the interception, it was over after that. It kind of
- 52:45Speaker 6: like all the work that we put in throughout the week,
- 52:47Speaker 6: you know, balled in.
- 52:48Speaker 1: And it worked.
- 52:48Speaker 6: So after that, just cut it loose. What went into
- 52:51Speaker 6: your decision to come to A & M? You know,
- 52:53Speaker 6: Coach Elko, you know, Coach Ish, you know, those guys
- 52:56Speaker 6: are really good defensive guys. You know, I had a
- 52:59Speaker 6: lot of schools to go to coming out of this portal. And,
- 53:01Speaker 6: you know, A & M, when I talked to Coach Elko,
- 53:03Speaker 6: he sat me down and told me that I'm going
- 53:04Speaker 6: to have to earn a spot. Nothing's going to be
- 53:05Speaker 6: given to me. And I already know the track record
- 53:08Speaker 6: of this defense. You know, it brought a lot of
- 53:10Speaker 6: safeties in the lead. You know, it was very versatile,
- 53:13Speaker 6: very multiple. You're going to be asked to do different things,
- 53:16Speaker 6: asked to cover, asked to play the deep third, asked
- 53:18Speaker 6: to play the hook, blitz, guard tight end. You know,
- 53:20Speaker 6: it's multiple, and that's, you know, kind of confidence in
- 53:22Speaker 6: our play.
- 53:23Speaker 24: Some guys might look at two established captains being there
- 53:28Speaker 24: already and might say, I'm.
- 53:29Speaker 30: Going to go somewhere where I can for sure start.
- 53:31Speaker 30: So why did that not deter you at all? You know,
- 53:34Speaker 30: this is college football, you know, today's game. You need bodies.
- 53:37Speaker 30: You've got to have more than, you know, two or
- 53:38Speaker 30: three guys that can go on and play.
- 53:40Speaker 6: And, you know, when they told me that those guys
- 53:41Speaker 6: were coming back, it made me want to come even
- 53:43Speaker 6: more because I knew I was the type of player
- 53:44Speaker 6: that was going to be in the room. So, you know,
- 53:46Speaker 6: having Rat, having Dawg, those guys who played in SEC games,
- 53:49Speaker 6: you know, It doesn't do nothing for me but pushes
- 53:51Speaker 6: me because, okay, I know those guys can do it.
- 53:53Speaker 6: I've seen them do it. Now just add me into
- 53:55Speaker 6: the rotation and we'll be fine. Finish this statement. Texas
- 53:58Speaker 6: A & M beats Missouri if. If we play fast
- 54:02Speaker 6: and we do what we got to do. All right.
- 54:04Speaker 2: Thanks, everybody.
- 54:05Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 54:06Speaker 19: Thanks, sir.
- 54:07Speaker 5: That's Tafik Bayard. I like him. I like the story
- 54:10Speaker 5: about being soft. I ain't going to be soft anymore.
- 54:14Speaker 5: That was it. I like that. And he made a difference.
- 54:19Speaker 5: We'll see about Saturday.
- 54:22Speaker 1: Our coverage starts early Saturday morning at 7 a.m.
- 54:28Speaker 5: So tune in. Turn on. Drop out. Oh, no, wait.
- 54:33Speaker 5: That was a long time ago.
- 54:37Speaker 1: Coming up, we've got the Clark Eisenhower Outdoor Edition. We're
- 54:41Speaker 1: also going to hear from Bucky. And the team's been practicing.
- 54:47Speaker 1: Their exhibition game is Sunday, October 25th, which would be
- 54:54Speaker 1: two weeks from this Sunday, against those SMU Ponies up
- 54:59Speaker 1: in Dallas. And the following week, they'll be home, and
- 55:05Speaker 1: it'll be time to start playing hoops.
- 55:08Speaker 5: And that'll be good. We like that.
- 55:10Speaker 6: Okay.
- 55:12Speaker 5: Need a break?
- 55:12Speaker 1: Need to close out this hour? Begin hour number two
