- 0:00Speaker 1: Football and four powered by the Inside the Birch podcasts,
- 0:02Speaker 1: which you can get on all podcasting platforms. Jeff Boscher
- 0:06Speaker 1: is here today for a football and for Summer mail Bag,
- 0:09Speaker 1: and we got more questions today than we've had any
- 0:12Speaker 1: other time for most today. I love it. We've got
- 0:15Speaker 1: a ton of questions today. We're less than a month
- 0:18Speaker 1: to training camp. It's brought to you by the Fanatic
- 0:20Speaker 1: Sports Book at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City. Jeff
- 0:24Speaker 1: Boscher is here and the Summer mail Bag continues with
- 0:28Speaker 1: a ton of great questions today for Jeff Bocher, who
- 0:30Speaker 1: joins us now on today's football at form Mosher. What's up, buddy?
- 0:36Speaker 2: What's up? Man? I hear it's pretty hot up there?
- 0:38Speaker 2: Is that? That's the case. It's hot ware where you
- 0:41Speaker 2: guys are in Jersey. I'm still down in Myrtle Beach.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Oh oh, I didn't know that. Okay, I didn't realize
- 0:46Speaker 1: you were stud in. I'm like, you're here where we are.
- 0:48Speaker 1: It's roasted here. Yeah, it's actually not so bad today.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Tomorrow will make today sound feel like a winter day.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Great. Well, I mean it's been that hot here, so
- 0:58Speaker 2: I guess we'll just be coming back to it.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Now. When you flew to Myrtle Beach today, did you
- 1:03Speaker 1: use huh not today?
- 1:05Speaker 2: Uh?
- 1:06Speaker 1: Did you use one of the new Uh did you know?
- 1:09Speaker 1: Do you use one of the new ac y Uh
- 1:12Speaker 1: transportations there they fly direct to Myrtle Beach?
- 1:14Speaker 2: Now, Uh, no, we roll. We got to it's a
- 1:18Speaker 2: softball tournament. We're here for national so we can get
- 1:20Speaker 2: all that stuff on an airplane.
- 1:22Speaker 1: All right, Well, next time I use Allegiance, they fly
- 1:24Speaker 1: direct to uh Myrtle Beach and they don't pay me
- 1:26Speaker 1: or anything. I just it's a very convenient way to
- 1:29Speaker 1: get down there. Uh. Most we're getting more and more
- 1:31Speaker 1: questions for the mailbag. People are loving the summer mail
- 1:34Speaker 1: bag here. Uh with all the stuff here. Uh. So
- 1:37Speaker 1: let's get into some here because I know you're a
- 1:39Speaker 1: little short on time today. Let's go to a Joe
- 1:41Speaker 1: up in Tom's River. Uh. He wants to know, does Jeff, Jeff,
- 1:45Speaker 1: do you think that DeVante Smith is ready to be
- 1:48Speaker 1: a number one a wide receiver in the league.
- 1:54Speaker 2: So that's a great question because I think the omnis
- 1:57Speaker 2: answer is yes. But I just want to make sure
- 1:59Speaker 2: that Joe, he said from.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Tom Hill and Tom's River, all right, the home.
- 2:04Speaker 2: And the Lighter family Mark And al right, I think
- 2:06Speaker 2: that the Lighters are from Tom River.
- 2:08Speaker 1: A lot of good Little League players from there.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yet, Yeah, yes, for sure, Phraser all that it depends
- 2:15Speaker 2: on your definition of the one A. I mean, I
- 2:17Speaker 2: think that every team has a number one wide receiver,
- 2:20Speaker 2: but that wide receiver may not be an elite guy.
- 2:24Speaker 2: And then there's to me, the cream of the crop,
- 2:27Speaker 2: the jamar chases the justin Jefferson's right. Obviously, to me,
- 2:31Speaker 2: Devonte Smith is a very good receiver who will be
- 2:34Speaker 2: a very good one, number one wide receiver for the
- 2:37Speaker 2: Philadelphia Eagles, now that he has that opportunity. Do I
- 2:40Speaker 2: think we're going to talk about him the way we
- 2:42Speaker 2: talk about Chase Jefferson, Jackson Smith and Jig. But I'm
- 2:46Speaker 2: not totally sure of that. I think he's got an
- 2:50Speaker 2: opportunity to prove it. He'll get in the ball a lot.
- 2:54Speaker 2: He does some really special things that separate him from
- 2:57Speaker 2: other guys you could put in the top ten or two. Well,
- 3:00Speaker 2: you know, his contested catchability is incredible as hands as
- 3:04Speaker 2: route running, he doesn't have elite speed, But I mean,
- 3:07Speaker 2: I think if you want to build a top five
- 3:10Speaker 2: or top six and then put him right outside of it.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I think that that would be pretty fair, and I
- 3:15Speaker 2: think he'll get an opportunity to maybe prove and he
- 3:17Speaker 2: could be even better than what we're saying. But he's
- 3:19Speaker 2: certainly in the upper trust of wide receivers in the NFL.
- 3:24Speaker 1: All right, Marcus from Violent chimes in, and he wants
- 3:28Speaker 1: to know it's pretty weird not having Jeff Stotlin coach
- 3:30Speaker 1: in the offensive line anymore. How big of a impact
- 3:34Speaker 1: will that actually be? Is that being under discussed?
- 3:38Speaker 2: Maybe from a development standpoint and a scheme standpoint. I
- 3:42Speaker 2: think Chris Cooper is very familiar with the blocking scheme,
- 3:45Speaker 2: having played in it and coached in it before that
- 3:48Speaker 2: he's trying to bring to the Eagles, and I think
- 3:51Speaker 2: that as long as he communicates how he wants the
- 3:54Speaker 2: players to do it and they can be receptive to it,
- 3:57Speaker 2: that's not to me the biggest concerner issue they concerned.
- 4:01Speaker 2: The issue, the question mark you might call it, is
- 4:05Speaker 2: his ability to develop talent the way Jeff Saltland is.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I mean, we talk about Jordan Malatta obviously is the
- 4:12Speaker 2: best example, but there have been others. I mean, guys
- 4:15Speaker 2: who've come here and really played well. There's so many
- 4:17Speaker 2: more guys who've come here and played well that didn't
- 4:20Speaker 2: play well. And so I think that's where Chris Cooper's
- 4:23Speaker 2: gonna have to, you know, struggle to up hot a
- 4:26Speaker 2: legacy of just being able to bring these guys in
- 4:28Speaker 2: and I'll have them all play at a really high level.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Let's go to David cherry Hill. Jalen Hurts rushing numbers
- 4:35Speaker 1: weren't so good last year under Kevin Batulla. Do you
- 4:38Speaker 1: think Sean Manny will ask more from him in the
- 4:41Speaker 1: run game in this offense? Thank you, Dave.
- 4:45Speaker 2: It's a great question. I mean it's not really a staple.
- 4:48Speaker 2: And other of the West Coast offenses like the Rams
- 4:51Speaker 2: or the Packers, I don't think Jordan Loved has a
- 4:54Speaker 2: whole lot of designed running. You know brock Perty obviously
- 4:57Speaker 2: in San Francisco, Trevor Lawrence and Jackson does he run, sure,
- 5:01Speaker 2: But I don't know how much of that is designed.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I didn't really watch a pun of Jacksonville last year.
- 5:07Speaker 2: Obviously Hurts is different because he can run. But you know,
- 5:11Speaker 2: if you go to the Baltimore look at their offense
- 5:14Speaker 2: under Monkin, who is not the same. But Lamar runs
- 5:17Speaker 2: a lot, but less now than he did earlier in
- 5:20Speaker 2: his career, and I think that's a national evolution for
- 5:22Speaker 2: quarterbacks to run less than they did earlier in their career.
- 5:26Speaker 2: You saw, I thought. I think it was more Jalen
- 5:28Speaker 2: Hurts' decision last year not to run that it was
- 5:32Speaker 2: not built into the offense because a lot of his
- 5:35Speaker 2: runs are freelance runs anyway, and the league put onto
- 5:38Speaker 2: the RPO concept quite a while ago, so you don't
- 5:41Speaker 2: see as many design runs off RPOs as you used to.
- 5:45Speaker 2: So the question of that it is what's in Jalen
- 5:49Speaker 2: Hurts his head, And to me it seems just based
- 5:51Speaker 2: on watching the last few years, than he'd rather not
- 5:54Speaker 2: run as much as he used to.
- 5:57Speaker 1: I like this question from up Ryan and egg Harbor
- 5:59Speaker 1: Town on Ship. He wants to know how complex is
- 6:03Speaker 1: Vic Fangio going to get with Cooper de Jean's versatility
- 6:07Speaker 1: this season.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Well, I mean he's gonna use him at safety, He's
- 6:11Speaker 2: gonna in certain situations, and he's gonna slide him into
- 6:13Speaker 2: nickel back when they're in nickel I think without Nikobe Dean,
- 6:19Speaker 2: who was so good at being that fourth rusher in
- 6:22Speaker 2: a sim pressure, which is when you have a linebacker
- 6:25Speaker 2: or a defensive back blitz, but you have a defensive
- 6:27Speaker 2: lineman drop, so it's still just a four man rush.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Nikobe was the fourth guy in there. He was so
- 6:33Speaker 2: good at it. Without him in there, it could either
- 6:35Speaker 2: be John Campbell or it could be Cooper Gene from
- 6:40Speaker 2: the nickel position. That's what I'm really looking forward to
- 6:43Speaker 2: seeing is does Vic use him in that way, because
- 6:46Speaker 2: we already know he's going to play a two different
- 6:48Speaker 2: positions in the secondary.
- 6:50Speaker 1: I like this question too, Kevin from Deptford Tones, and
- 6:53Speaker 1: you can tell that people are down the shore here.
- 6:54Speaker 1: We get some Deptfords, we get some cherry Hill's Segwa
- 6:59Speaker 1: Barkley two thout yards down to eleven hundred yards. Are
- 7:03Speaker 1: the Eagles going to lean heavily on Saque? They have
- 7:06Speaker 1: some interesting names behind him in camp.
- 7:11Speaker 2: That's a great question. We talk about that a lot
- 7:13Speaker 2: on inside the Birds. I mean, they certainly have a
- 7:15Speaker 2: really a pretty decent stable of backups because they have
- 7:18Speaker 2: a guy like Tank Pixby, and of course they drafted
- 7:21Speaker 2: will Shipley, and I think there's an opportunity to get
- 7:24Speaker 2: them the ball more. But they had that opportunity last
- 7:27Speaker 2: year even with you know, the run game struggling, and
- 7:30Speaker 2: decided not to do it. So until I see it,
- 7:33Speaker 2: So I see that they're actually going to give the
- 7:35Speaker 2: ball and spread it around a little more, which I
- 7:37Speaker 2: think they can do. Last year, John Robinson had an
- 7:40Speaker 2: unbelievable year and an unbelievable number of touches, and I
- 7:43Speaker 2: think his backup Algier, Tyler Algier still had about eight
- 7:47Speaker 2: touches per game, whereas Biggs the average about four. So
- 7:51Speaker 2: I would love to see a little bit more diverse
- 7:53Speaker 2: usage of running backs in the run game. Yeah.
- 7:57Speaker 1: By the way, he did mention Damian Pierce Elijah as
- 8:00Speaker 1: two guys that are on the roster.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I don't think they're gonna make the team though. Yeah,
- 8:06Speaker 2: well other areas.
- 8:10Speaker 1: It's going to Christian Ocean City, who's become a pretty
- 8:12Speaker 1: frequent football for mail Bag Texter. Thank you, Chris. He
- 8:16Speaker 1: wants to know, uh is Eli Stours gonna have a
- 8:21Speaker 1: big a big role at a bigger role at tight
- 8:24Speaker 1: end or will Grant cal Katara beat him out for
- 8:28Speaker 1: the number two spot?
- 8:31Speaker 2: Well, first of all, they can both make the team,
- 8:34Speaker 2: and I think that that's more down in distance and
- 8:36Speaker 2: package that you're running. I mean, you're gonna have times
- 8:39Speaker 2: when you run on one year vibe.
- 8:41Speaker 1: I don't know that he's asking one guy's gonna get
- 8:43Speaker 1: cut over the other. Just who gets more more playing time,
- 8:47Speaker 1: I guess or has a bigger role in the atch.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think that just depends on Elishtowers
- 8:53Speaker 2: and his development. He's such an explosive player that he
- 8:56Speaker 2: should catch the ball more fluidly and just as nicely
- 8:59Speaker 2: as Grant Calcutta, but probably give you a little bit
- 9:01Speaker 2: more athleticism at that position. But he's got to learn
- 9:05Speaker 2: to block and break. Cal Katerra cannot block very well,
- 9:09Speaker 2: So I would think if Stowers could accelerate his pace
- 9:14Speaker 2: of learning how to block, he could get He could
- 9:18Speaker 2: get in there over Calcutta very easily. And I do
- 9:20Speaker 2: think it's going to be difficult for Calcutur to make
- 9:23Speaker 2: the team. I mean, Adam and I have done our
- 9:24Speaker 2: fifty three man roster projection podcast series this week. We
- 9:27Speaker 2: did Offensive came out today and both of us had
- 9:30Speaker 2: only three tight ends making it because they have to
- 9:32Speaker 2: go heavier at quarterback, heavier on offensive line. I think
- 9:35Speaker 2: the three we both had the same too, right, it
- 9:38Speaker 2: was Dallas Goddard and Eli Stowers, but his third was
- 9:43Speaker 2: I believe it was cal Katerra or no, his third
- 9:46Speaker 2: was Mont and mine was a lot too. So actually
- 9:48Speaker 2: neither of us had Calcatura making the.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Team, all right, So no Calcatarra for you and Adam.
- 9:54Speaker 1: And of course we'll see what Eli Stowers brings second
- 9:57Speaker 1: round pick there. So what's an interesting question from Mike Hamilton.
- 10:01Speaker 1: He wants to know, Jeff, what is your Nick Sirianni
- 10:04Speaker 1: hot seat meter?
- 10:10Speaker 2: I guess I need to understand that more like, what
- 10:13Speaker 2: does their record have to be?
- 10:15Speaker 1: I guess who to have him on high alert? Are
- 10:18Speaker 1: you saying he's not high on the on the hot
- 10:20Speaker 1: seat or what?
- 10:23Speaker 2: He's on the hot seat for sure? I mean they
- 10:26Speaker 2: need to make the playoffs, probably need to win a
- 10:28Speaker 2: playoff game. Offense I think definitely needs to be better,
- 10:33Speaker 2: especially the passing offense, even though that's under sew Mannion's control.
- 10:37Speaker 2: I mean, he is the head coach and somebody would
- 10:39Speaker 2: have to pay the price if things don't go well there.
- 10:43Speaker 2: But so, yes, he's on the hot seat. Do I
- 10:45Speaker 2: think he's getting fired if they start off too and
- 10:46Speaker 2: four No, I think he gets the season, but it's
- 10:50Speaker 2: got to be a productive season and a good season
- 10:52Speaker 2: that meets Jeffrey Larry's standards.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Well, I would interject with this back to you, is
- 10:57Speaker 1: that if the offense struggles again, do you have to
- 11:01Speaker 1: get another coordinator or does he get a second opportunity?
- 11:05Speaker 1: I mean, you can't keep firing the coordinator, So that
- 11:08Speaker 1: is a whole cloudy situation there.
- 11:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's hard to predict the future, but
- 11:13Speaker 2: I agree with what you're saying. Is I mean, if
- 11:15Speaker 2: things go south, I think it's more of a house cleaning.
- 11:18Speaker 2: And you know, every if people have asked me, like,
- 11:21Speaker 2: would what happens if the Eagles if Sewan Manion's really
- 11:26Speaker 2: good but they're unhappy with Nick Serianni, does he get
- 11:29Speaker 2: fired and Manion gets to keep the job. I mean
- 11:31Speaker 2: it's just hard. If we all agree that the defense
- 11:34Speaker 2: should be very good and pretty top level, then if
- 11:39Speaker 2: Sewan Manion succeeds, the Eagles should be good and we
- 11:41Speaker 2: shouldn't be having that discussion because the defense already going
- 11:44Speaker 2: to be very good. And if you're telling me the
- 11:46Speaker 2: offense is going to be really good, then why would
- 11:48Speaker 2: the Eagles not be a good team. It doesn't compute
- 11:52Speaker 2: in my head that one the offense will be really good,
- 11:54Speaker 2: but then the Eagles will be somehow moving on from
- 11:56Speaker 2: Nick Sirianni unless he did something so catastrophic bad that
- 12:00Speaker 2: he ought to get fired.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Well, you could have a situation like last year where
- 12:03Speaker 1: you won the division and won a lot of games,
- 12:04Speaker 1: but still the offense was a mess.
- 12:07Speaker 2: It was a mess. But that's then I'm saying the
- 12:10Speaker 2: whole house would Geff. Then Sean Mannion would also be
- 12:14Speaker 2: that though.
- 12:15Speaker 1: Do you at that point, Jeff, do you have Jalen
- 12:19Speaker 1: work with another coordinator? That's the wild part about the
- 12:22Speaker 1: whole thing.
- 12:24Speaker 2: If it's I mean, we're talking Tosday scenario here, right,
- 12:27Speaker 2: We're talking about the Eagle stink and don't make the
- 12:29Speaker 2: playoffs and changes have to make, then he's going to
- 12:32Speaker 2: just that's the reality of situation. If this whole operation
- 12:36Speaker 2: doesn't work, the reset button will have to be pushed.
- 12:39Speaker 2: So and you know when we talked about the contract
- 12:42Speaker 2: and what it means. But again, like that's there's no
- 12:44Speaker 2: scenario where the offense looks good, Jalen Hurt looks really good,
- 12:48Speaker 2: and then the team is bad unless the defense stinks,
- 12:50Speaker 2: and I don't think anybody can see that happening.
- 12:52Speaker 1: I agree with that one Tom from Sover's point. Now
- 12:55Speaker 1: Tom from Summer's point. I don't know if this is
- 12:56Speaker 1: the Tom and Sever's point who was a frequent caller
- 12:59Speaker 1: and texter, or this is a different Tom in Summer's point.
- 13:02Speaker 1: But does Jeff Bosher think that Roseman will make another
- 13:06Speaker 1: veteran move before camp starts, and if so, at what spot?
- 13:11Speaker 2: We don't think before camp starts, I will rule it out.
- 13:16Speaker 2: I suppose it's possible, you know, maybe upgrading the safety position,
- 13:20Speaker 2: still bringing in a veteran there even though they're gonna
- 13:23Speaker 2: play the gene there in base situations. And then for Nickel,
- 13:27Speaker 2: he's gonna move there and they'll have apt or they'll
- 13:30Speaker 2: have a kid that they like in Michael Carter. Maybe
- 13:32Speaker 2: maybe there's someone who's still on the market and they say, hey,
- 13:36Speaker 2: this guys should at least come in and compete for
- 13:38Speaker 2: a job. But it's not gonna be something earth shattering.
- 13:41Speaker 2: It's not gonna be like a trade where you're giving
- 13:43Speaker 2: up a second or a third round pick to get
- 13:45Speaker 2: a player. I mean, the max Crosby thing, and maybe
- 13:48Speaker 2: that's what Tom is getting at. Sure, that's gonna hang
- 13:51Speaker 2: in the balance until the start of the year, but
- 13:53Speaker 2: again I don't see Crosby going unless it's like one
- 13:56Speaker 2: of those deals where the Eagles are giving up multiple
- 14:00Speaker 2: first round picks, and I don't know that they're gonna
- 14:02Speaker 2: be doing that.
- 14:02Speaker 1: Well, there we go. If we didn't get to your
- 14:04Speaker 1: question today. We have a couple more summer mailbags sessions
- 14:09Speaker 1: before training camp starts, so you can keep sending them
- 14:12Speaker 1: in on the text board, on social media or email
- 14:16Speaker 1: at Mike Yill's show. Jeff Boucher and the Inside of
- 14:19Speaker 1: the Bird's crew is back with Football at four tomorrow
- 14:21Speaker 1: right here on the sports bast Live. Enjoy Myrtle Beach.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I hope you are hitting the beach down there.
- 14:28Speaker 2: We have. It's good fun. Thanks life all.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Right, man, Take care. Jeff Bocher Football at four powered
