Transcript
- 0:08All right, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon on a
- 0:11Wednesday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:13Network. Trent Condon and Ken Miller for
- 0:16the next couple of hours talking sports with you.
- 0:18Appreciate you starting your afternoon here with us.
- 0:21Here's what's coming up on our program.
- 0:23We're going to start at 1225. Little Hawkeye conversation.
- 0:26Right off the bat, Jan Jensen has landed a jewel, a gem for
- 0:31the 2026 class. Help me out, Trent McKenna.
- 0:35Well, let's go. Well, let's go She a top five
- 0:39wing, yes, top five wing in the country.
- 0:41So. Number six player overall about.
- 0:43That good for her, Jan Jensen and whoever else is out on the
- 0:46road with you sealing that deal as she will be making a way to
- 0:50Iowa City. Is she the 1st in that class to
- 0:54sign do you know? Well, hasn't signed well, right?
- 0:57Made her commitment, yes. And last weekend they had
- 1:00another top five player in with Bjorn from down in Kansas City.
- 1:04There's another. CC still continues to pay
- 1:07residuals. Here locally you have up at
- 1:10Johnston Lewis, Jenica Lewis who is one of the top 25 players in
- 1:14the country, so trending maybe in a positive direction there.
- 1:17I know there's another top guard that they're after, Jan Jetson.
- 1:21One of her major strengths as an assistant was as a recruiter and
- 1:24now the head job, doing an incredible job of looking to
- 1:28fortify this roster. You know, last year I thought
- 1:31was such an important bridge year for them.
- 1:32Yeah. Because you want to lose
- 1:33momentum. Yeah, you couldn't fall on your
- 1:35face right when they had that five game losing streak.
- 1:38Looked like maybe it was trending, but they pulled out of
- 1:39it. They got that win out of
- 1:40Washington and really turned around the season, had the huge
- 1:43win against USC, and though it didn't go well against Oklahoma
- 1:46in the second round, you got there, you won a game.
- 1:48All right, now it's time to build it back up and it looks
- 1:51like at least recruiting wise, that is definitely happening.
- 1:54Good for them. So David Eichel 12/25 That and
- 1:57obviously Gronowski if what his take away listening to Tim
- 2:00Lester. Cloudy I think is how they put
- 2:03it. So we'll get David's version of
- 2:05cloudy when he joins us at 12:25.
- 2:07Mitch Holtz is the voice of the Chiefs.
- 2:10He will join us to talk about this past week and look ahead to
- 2:13Monday Night Football as they go to Jacksonville.
- 2:15Capy is here to kick off our number 2 pretty timely.
- 2:18The cap man, the Cubs up 1, nothing.
- 2:20Bullpen game today. I don't like it on the surface.
- 2:25And look, I'm a Kittridge guy. I've been saying that since he
- 2:27got over from Baltimore. Yeah, I'm a little bit
- 2:29surprised. Go for their throat.
- 2:32But they are, aren't they? I hope.
- 2:34I'm but if but if you were, wouldn't you send your starter
- 2:37out there? You wouldn't.
- 2:38Because this is where Shota Imanaga has struggled.
- 2:41He has struggled two different ways, both in the first standing
- 2:44of games. So he'll come into the game as
- 2:46that. How OK?
- 2:47And then secondly. So that's different that shame
- 2:49on me because I didn't realize that was the case.
- 2:51Yes, that is the game and as I understand it it'll be Kittridge
- 2:54likely for an ending and then show and then Shota will come in
- 2:57after. That I've always told you I like
- 2:59create Council. You're ready to kill him,
- 3:01weren't you? Now, if that's not the plan?
- 3:04Then back to I. Am right there with you.
- 3:07That is awful but the other part is you also.
- 3:09Then when you hit the top of the order, you're not seeing him for
- 3:121/3 time. And most everybody we know in
- 3:15baseball. Especially this time in
- 3:16baseball. Yes, yeah, playoff baseball goes
- 3:19to another level coupled with Shota.
- 3:21That's been another issue for him is the third time through.
- 3:23So you're pushing that back a little bit.
- 3:25You're doing it with a veteran. You're doing with the guy that
- 3:27you feel comfortable with. Kittridge, he's just, he's out
- 3:31there. He kind of looks like a beer
- 3:32league softball player. He's got that.
- 3:33Funky delivery. Now the Game of Thrones is
- 3:36wrapped up, he can play baseball again.
- 3:37That's right, and he's got the funk and go out there, get a
- 3:41123, bang, bang, bang and off you go.
- 3:43Here comes showed in the second inning, but and you put that in
- 3:47there if this doesn't go well. If yeah.
- 3:50I mean if they hit them hard right away, what are you doing?
- 3:53You have shota available, put your throat to them.
- 3:56So there will be second guessing if this doesn't go.
- 3:58Well, that's why managers earn their money and Aaron Boone is
- 4:01earning his money today because he is getting killed.
- 4:03We'll get to that in a second. Cappy kicks off hour number two,
- 4:06Nick Maravitz, locked on Cyclones.
- 4:08Part of the locked on network will get the latest on Iowa
- 4:11State. I want to stop and criticize.
- 4:13Certainly me and I'll throw you into the mix.
- 4:15Jeez, OK. I so I'm, I'm walking out of the
- 4:18studio yesterday, down the stairs.
- 4:21Here comes Sean and Lucas up the stairs.
- 4:22And no, little, little conversation doesn't going down.
- 4:26He's coming up and they're coming up and Sean says to me,
- 4:30boy, John Tez Williams is all for the year, huh?
- 4:32Yeah, and it didn't dawn on me what he'd said until he got into
- 4:38how did we miss that news yesterday during our show?
- 4:41It broke during our show. I just thought, well, yeah,
- 4:44Cooper's out for the league. And it didn't sink in.
- 4:47And then it sunk in, and I'm thinking, we never even
- 4:49mentioned this, that they're going to be without both of
- 4:52their starting corners. Horrible job out of us.
- 4:55Pretty important game coming up against Cincinnati, but how do
- 5:00we miss it? I know we were doing a lot of
- 5:02NFL yesterday. We were and watching baseball.
- 5:04Trying to keep up to date on that.
- 5:05That was probably the reason too.
- 5:06I guess I had something to do with it, but boy, oh boy.
- 5:08So what is what is Iowa State? Look, they're proud of their
- 5:12culture. They should be.
- 5:14They've built depth over there in the last few years.
- 5:17Going to be tested. Oh, no doubt going to be tested
- 5:19because they're going to play some quarterbacks who Chuck it
- 5:21around here before the season comes to an end.
- 5:24So I went back and I watched the the sequence last night when he
- 5:27got hurt. I, I sought during the game.
- 5:30Mm hmm. But he didn't dawn on me that,
- 5:33you know, he was, you know, gonna be season ender and he was
- 5:36down on the ground for a significant amount of time.
- 5:39And then they walk off the field.
- 5:40He walked off the field under his own steam.
- 5:42But he kind of stopped a little bit before, right.
- 5:44He got to the sideline, kind of kind of shook his, his, his
- 5:47right leg a little bit. And the worst part about it is,
- 5:50and it's football is it was friendly fire.
- 5:52I think it was Caleb Bacon who fell into him as they were
- 5:57making a play up 3 touchdowns, 3 minutes left in the game.
- 6:00You know, you're second guessing yourself on that one.
- 6:03But Williams and Cooper now both out, Trey Bell, who we both
- 6:07like. I'm not putting words in your
- 6:08mouth, am I? I think you'll like Trey Bell.
- 6:10Good size, looks solid at mid. I'm with you.
- 6:14And now Quinton Taylor, junior, a red shirt freshman, is going
- 6:17to be asked to to pick up a lot of those, a lot of that
- 6:21workload. So we'll see where it goes.
- 6:23Like John Haycock is pretty good.
- 6:25What he does for a living, let's be honest, I don't hit the panic
- 6:28button because of what we saw at linebacker last year.
- 6:32I mean, just absolutely devastating.
- 6:33And right away, I mean, he's starting that Iowa game where
- 6:36they're down what, playing their 6th, 8th and 9th linebackers
- 6:39coming into camp. And that's what they had out
- 6:42there. And it really wasn't that big of
- 6:44a deal, you know? And he just, he's going to find
- 6:47a way coupled with what they do in the defensive backfield and
- 6:50versatility and what you have back there.
- 6:52Obviously everybody knows that. My affinity for Neil and I know
- 6:55we're not alone on that front, but just the rest of that.
- 6:58Patton's had a terrific. Yeah, we talked about Patton
- 7:00yesterday. I mean, he has taken that step
- 7:01and he's gone from. He's fine, dude.
- 7:04He's a good player. He is a good player.
- 7:06Now the back end of that defense is going to be fine.
- 7:09We'll see about Cummings. Coleman, I know he's also
- 7:11dealing with an injury now, but via Tinter, we see a little bit
- 7:14of him. James back there.
- 7:15Taylor's fine. But the one thing I do want to
- 7:18see that comes out of this is if Betty Nagoya is ready.
- 7:21Yeah, and he's probably going to have to be asked to step up a
- 7:24little bit here. Because if you go on one side
- 7:27with Trey Bell, he's a big coin and then you put a Goye on the
- 7:31bigger cornerback. I mean, that's something that
- 7:34that's something that looks different coupled with that
- 7:36safety play. I am a little bit excited to
- 7:38see. You never want to lose certainly
- 7:40any player of the caliber of one of them of or Williams, not a
- 7:44little both. But my concern level because of
- 7:47Haycock, it just it's not real high.
- 7:50Be interesting, can't wait to see it.
- 7:51How much is that factored into the point spread movement?
- 7:54So it opened up Iowa State opened up two correct on when
- 7:58Circa put it out. I think so, yes and very.
- 8:00Quickly, so this is Sunday and and we got we we were asked to
- 8:06comment on this on, on our Twitter, on the Miller and
- 8:08Condon Twitter page as to, you know, how Vegas knows about
- 8:11these things seemingly before everybody else does.
- 8:14That was Troy that asked us that.
- 8:16And a it's a reaction to the money that they're seeing come
- 8:19in probably as much as anything. But they all get, they all get
- 8:24information. They've all got people not on
- 8:26the nothing wrong with giving them.
- 8:28Hell, I've given them information many times.
- 8:31You've probably done the same thing.
- 8:32I'm not sure we do it for, you know, anybody else, but
- 8:36obviously our relationship with circus.
- 8:38So they get it from a variety of of a variety of different ways,
- 8:41but mostly from watching, you know, their, their computers and
- 8:45watching the money come in and trying to adjust it because, you
- 8:48know, a perfect. World, they just make a living
- 8:51off the juice, no doubt. And you balance the books,
- 8:54balance the books, go that direction, rake in your 10%,
- 8:57you're good to go and that's what they're hoping for and
- 8:59that's why we hear so many times they don't want a number to
- 9:01push. Yeah right.
- 9:02They don't want that to land on a three.
- 9:03They don't want it to land on A7, whatever the number turns
- 9:06out to be. Another component to that is
- 9:09there are people that they have too, and there are different
- 9:13people inside of programs or very close to programs that, and
- 9:18this isn't Matt Campbell is not making a call.
- 9:20No, Kurt Faris is not making a call.
- 9:23Not Tim Lester, not J Cat. No, nothing like that.
- 9:26But student assistants, guys that are grad assistants, things
- 9:30like that, people that are trainers, those are the
- 9:32different elements that they have in many programs.
- 9:35And this isn't an Iowa State. Thing.
- 9:36No, no, no. This is across the.
- 9:37Country. This is across the country.
- 9:38This is 1 sport, 136 teams, 360 teams in college basketball.
- 9:42NHLNBANFL all of them. MLB, All of them.
- 9:46And do they have every single program?
- 9:47No. No, but most of the board,
- 9:49that's why they watch the money coming in.
- 9:51But that's the most important your component, you know,
- 9:53because people get their tinfoil hats out and we encourage that
- 9:56on Miller and kind of we like our tin file hats, however.
- 9:59Back and forth daily. The biggest 1 is what they see
- 10:03coming in and maybe there's other people, there's betting
- 10:06syndicates that have the same thing.
- 10:07They also have people inside programs that will feed them
- 10:11information, but they all of a sudden see we've taken 5 limit
- 10:15bets on Cincinnati Iowa State. Then they start to dig a little
- 10:19bit deeper too. Absolutely.
- 10:20So that's our program chat. We'll end it with his plays of
- 10:23the day. So let's go back to baseball
- 10:25yesterday. You know what struck me watching
- 10:26the opening day of Super Tuesday of Wild Card?
- 10:29The left-handed pitchers and their dominance in this thing.
- 10:33I mean, it was 1 lefty starter after another.
- 10:36It was scuba and it was Boyd and it was crochet and it was freed
- 10:43and it was Blake Snell in the nightcap.
- 10:45My God. The lefty starters, they were
- 10:47asked to do a lot and all of them pitched exceptionally well.
- 10:50If you're Aaron Boone, I guess I'll put just put it this way.
- 10:54Should he have left him in and he went to Weaver and Weaver had
- 10:57not been good in the month of September, Crochet stays in.
- 11:01He was unbelievable. My God, he was good and scuba
- 11:04earlier in the day. What was your thoughts on what
- 11:06Aaron Boone did and are the Yankees up against it here
- 11:10today? I certainly was not second
- 11:12guessing it at a time he was north of 100 pitches.
- 11:14We're talking about going through the order again and I
- 11:17didn't do I just did like the spot.
- 11:19You know, after he got the I, it was a situation more than
- 11:22anything. In fact, if they would have just
- 11:23taken him out after 6, maybe could even understood it more,
- 11:26you know, doing it that direction.
- 11:28But after getting it out and then bring him that, it just was
- 11:32a head scratching decision. Weaver, I understand putting
- 11:35Weaver in that spot. You know, Williams looking at
- 11:38high leverage guys, right? Williams hasn't been good
- 11:40himself and he's got his own playoff issues.
- 11:43Weaver got him to the World Thunder World Series a year ago,
- 11:45and though it hasn't gone well lately, I think you go to that
- 11:48institutional knowledge. This guy's done it for us.
- 11:50Again, we see this happen so many times, guys, pitchers,
- 11:53bullpen guys that are different when it comes October.
- 11:56And because of that, I didn't have a problem with Weaver in
- 11:59that spot. Hindsight 2020 surely wouldn't
- 12:01do it now, but in the moment it was just the timing more than
- 12:05anything I think that bothered. Me of the teams that are down O2
- 12:08and what did you say yesterday? It's it's they're 2 and 10 in
- 12:12the last, yes, 2 and 10 in the last three seasons.
- 12:15As far as these, these things end early.
- 12:17These are sweeps. There's only two of the 12 that
- 12:20have gone to a game. Three.
- 12:21How many of these are going to go to a game 3?
- 12:23Trent Condon. I think we're going to see 2.
- 12:25You do and which two do you have in mind?
- 12:27I got the Tigers guardians. OK.
- 12:30And I have the Red Sox, Yankees, the American League I need for.
- 12:32Cleveland. Who is great against the Tigers?
- 12:35OK career. He has absolutely dominated in
- 12:38his starts. I think just as a starter, the
- 12:40win loss records like 24 and 2 something ridiculous like that
- 12:45crazy in those match ups. So I I really like that I got a
- 12:48couple of Bybee bets already that I hit before we went on the
- 12:52air today. So really like them, and I do
- 12:54think the Yankees do bounce back.
- 12:55Top of the first and Detroit's got runners on 1st and 2nd.
- 12:59Nobody. Else I see that.
- 13:00Yikes so well we'll see where it goes.
- 13:04It's gonna be fun to watch. I hope we get baseball tomorrow,
- 13:08hopefully during the day cause the Sunday of the Thursday night
- 13:10game is Niners at Rams. Pretty good game.
- 13:13Absolutely an important game on the Surface 2.
- 13:15Three in one teams. Uh huh.
- 13:17I I think that San Fran's a fake three in one team if you had to,
- 13:20if I had to say. And Purdy, very banged up, you
- 13:23know, a lot of concerns about him even being able to go in
- 13:26this one. And if he does, how limited he's
- 13:29going to be with the turf toe injury that is significant and
- 13:32trying to come back from that. We hear it all.
- 13:34Can we come up with a different name for turf toe?
- 13:36Well, you because it's not really the toe, right?
- 13:38Because so help me, who am I asking you?
- 13:42For Doctor Condon, all right. So as I understand it, your big
- 13:47toe is essentially pushed all the way back to the front of
- 13:52your ankle, right? Well, and it tears everything
- 13:55and can go, yeah, either up or down, but yeah, usually.
- 13:58Up, up towards. It's usually up.
- 14:00Towards your calf. Up towards right.
- 14:02And that's, I mean tears all those ligaments, yes, that's
- 14:06turf toe, right? Yeah, it's just the the
- 14:09terminology turf toe. It sounds like you stubbed a toe
- 14:11and everybody does that, you know, once a week minimum.
- 14:13Right. You're saying what's the big
- 14:14deal? And then you hear what it is.
- 14:16It's hyperextending your. Toe right and all the ligaments
- 14:19that are attached to it if. You ever had a hyperextended
- 14:22elbow or a knee? Think of that, or think of when
- 14:24you've seen that. That's what this is I.
- 14:26Agree with you, but when on the surface until I looked into it a
- 14:31few years ago. I'm thinking really, Toes going
- 14:33to keep him out for two months. Let's go.
- 14:37Rub some dirt out of kid let's. Go, kid, get in there.
- 14:40Oh, man, Oh, man. Good stuff.
- 14:42All right, so back to Iowa State, Cincinnati, your your
- 14:45thoughts on this game? I think it's a tough game.
- 14:47I think it's a tougher game than look, it's a road game.
- 14:52It's the Big 12. Iowa State came out of there.
- 14:54Bye. We just absolutely throttled
- 14:56Arizona. I want to see it before I, I'm
- 15:00for, I'm as confident in the secondary as you are.
- 15:02And I get it. The linebackers last year, we
- 15:05probably said the same thing, you know, prior to the
- 15:07linebackers being forced into action.
- 15:09Maybe these guys are up to it. Campbell has built depth.
- 15:12There's no denying that. He has built depth seemingly
- 15:15year after year after year. See where it goes?
- 15:19I'm now this is what I believe. In the preseason I had as an
- 15:22ELF, I had Iowa State losing to Cincinnati of memory serves.
- 15:26I know you watched a ton of the Cincinnati Kansas game.
- 15:29I did, and maybe that gives you a different perception.
- 15:31Really my deepest knowledge base and the most I watched was
- 15:34against Nebraska. Sorsby was awful.
- 15:36He ran the ball incredibly well, but throwing the football, he
- 15:39was terrible. He didn't have and he didn't
- 15:40throw the. Ball well against Iowa State
- 15:42last year. No, I'm going to look.
- 15:43I thought he was terrible against Iowa State last year.
- 15:46Could be the case. Yeah, I think he ran it.
- 15:49Did you run it OK? Sorsby threw for 66 yards.
- 15:53Ran for $1.43. Maybe that's also lingering in
- 15:56the behind, just a little bit of what happened in that one.
- 16:00Now this is kind of what we talked about last week, a week
- 16:03ago, everything that we've seen says take an E in right, lay the
- 16:07points, no big deal. They're going to throttle Iowa
- 16:10and yet the betting market was telling us something completely
- 16:12different. And I come into this one.
- 16:14Iowa State, they'll go there, they'll be fine.
- 16:16I don't see big concerns. But the betting market is
- 16:19telling us a different story. And the betting market, this is
- 16:22the big percentage of money and bets on one side They're on the
- 16:26Cyclones. Everybody publicly currently is
- 16:29on Iowa State. I think I saw yesterday was over
- 16:3180% of the money, like 72% of the tickets were on the
- 16:34Cyclones. Yet we're seeing that point
- 16:36spread go back the way of Cincinnati.
- 16:38That tells you there's either a betting syndicate or big money
- 16:41wagers are coming in on the Bearcats when that is happening.
- 16:44So my mind of watching football like it was Indiana last week
- 16:47says take the Hoosiers and Iowa covers this week.
- 16:51My betting mind says take Iowa State.
- 16:53Yet the betting market is telling us this is a Bearcats
- 16:56game. So that's because we've been
- 16:58doing this a long time. We're talking about these splits
- 17:00a long time. That's what has be concerned
- 17:02about Iowa State, nothing on the field, nothing football wise.
- 17:05It's the betting market that is really pushing me that.
- 17:07Way and look, the receivers so well had a breakout game.
- 17:10I mean, just a breakout game. He was absolutely terrific.
- 17:13We know the tight ends are going to be there.
- 17:15Eskeld sends off to a great start.
- 17:17Townsends doing what he does that they've got and then Rocco
- 17:21backed and and the line is playing relatively well.
- 17:24The offensive line is holding up.
- 17:26We'll see where it goes and John Haycock's going to get on the
- 17:30plane and he's going to be in Cincinnati.
- 17:31That's nice to have. It sure is.
- 17:33We'll take the time out, but before we do that, let's give
- 17:35you an opportunity here to win $1000 in this keyword contest
- 17:40that is going on. Head to KX and o.com right now.

- 18:08We'll do some women's hoop. We'll do some football with
- 18:10David when we come back. Miller and Condon talking sports
- 18:13with you. Glad you're with us on Des
- 18:14Moines sports station One O 6.3, KXNO and the Iowa Sports Radio
- 18:19Network. I'm Nora Condon, welcome back,
- 18:39Iowa Sports Radio Network, wherever you're listening in the
- 18:41state of Iowa. However you're listening, we're
- 18:43glad that you are and hopefully stay with us.
- 18:44Well, right through the afternoon as off the bench come
- 18:47Sean Robertson, Lucas Strain, 2 until 5.
- 18:50Mitch Holt is the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs coming up
- 18:53here at 12:45, David Icolt right now.
- 18:56He joins us recap the coordinators press conferences
- 18:59yesterday and the exciting news Jan Jensen and the Iowa women.
- 19:04God will get to that in a minute because I struggled with
- 19:05Mckennas last name, so save that.
- 19:07Well, let's go. Well, let's go.
- 19:09You'll get it. Well, let's go.
- 19:11McKenna would. Well, let's go is going to be a
- 19:13Hawkeye. All right, since we're there.
- 19:15David good to talk to you and I and I saw the video you posted
- 19:19on X when they found out and McKenna asked Jan Jensen and
- 19:23those around is #20 available sound made made pretty clear
- 19:27that she was going to join a Jan's squad.
- 19:30That's quite a get, David Icolt. Well done.
- 19:36Yeah. And I'll say this, too.
- 19:38Is that not just the most Jan Jensen reaction of all Jan
- 19:41Jensen reaction? Right.
- 19:43Just just the way everything there.
- 19:46But I'll go a step further, too, man.
- 19:48I mean, I really feel like this is the most important gift.
- 19:52I will win past history. I think you looked at Addy Deal.
- 19:57Luther Brown played basketball. We're going to put you David,
- 20:02we're going to, we're going to call you.
- 20:04Back yeah. And he mentioned he was in a
- 20:06spot that had a little bit of an issue.
- 20:08So he was right, yes. Let me see what I can do here
- 20:11real quick. Yeah, he was absolutely right.
- 20:13That's that's that's not good. I didn't want to put our
- 20:16audience through that. So we'll get David back on here
- 20:18to talk about McKenna Willitsko and obviously Mark Gronowski,
- 20:22who Tim Lester said it's cloudy. Good news is they don't play
- 20:25this week, right? They've got a weakened some time
- 20:28to figure out how that's going to transpire if he's going to be
- 20:33back. There's conflicting reports.
- 20:35Who depends on who you read, depends on who you listen to.
- 20:38It sounds as though it might be a couple of weeks.
- 20:41Fingers crossed that you know it's sooner rather than later.
- 20:45What are you hearing, Trent? I'm going to send him a zoom
- 20:49link that might work a little bit better.
- 20:51Oh, for for Dave. No, I'm OK.
- 20:53That's fine. I didn't know you're doing.
- 20:54That I apologize. That's OK.
- 20:56What? Nothing.
- 20:57Guardians. So they got out of the.
- 20:59First they got out of it 3 consecutive strikeouts over
- 21:02Bybee. Well, people jumped aboard with
- 21:04that one on the over 5 1/2. We're off to a good start on
- 21:06that one, but also you are left with solo home run there.
- 21:14The second batter, I wasn't sure who it was there, just saw it
- 21:16out of the corner of my eye, but what?
- 21:18Nothing Guardians, by the way. As they try to even up their
- 21:21series at one apiece. All right, so we'll work on
- 21:23David. I cold hopefully we'll get him
- 21:24back to opine on that. So when it comes to Gronowski,
- 21:27anything that you've heard, do you buy?
- 21:30I I think it's going to be touch and go certainly for the
- 21:34Wisconsin. I do too.
- 21:35I mean the the verbiage that they're using cloudy, yeah.
- 21:38And just is he gone for the year?
- 21:42Don't think so. Knock on wood, that doesn't tell
- 21:45me he's going to be ready for Wisconsin.
- 21:46I mean, if, if it's that kind of question, well, he's not done
- 21:50for the year, but he's not going to be ready for the middle is.
- 21:53Is this one of these things? Cause 'cause stick with me here.
- 21:57Listening to Campbell after the game against Arizona, it sounded
- 22:01like everybody came out of it OK.
- 22:04And then on Monday or, or on Sunday and probably Sunday when
- 22:08they did more testing, they found out that no, this is a
- 22:12knee. And I'm wondering if the the 2
- 22:14are not connected. But maybe unfortunately in our
- 22:18case, lightning would strike twice.
- 22:22You know, the bad news that a fall on I fell on Iowa State
- 22:26might be the same on Iowa. So we'll see obviously what when
- 22:31we find out, you'll find out and you'll probably find out before
- 22:34us because Kirk Ferris talks at 1:45 and by that time, not this
- 22:39week, next week. So we'll we'll see where it
- 22:41goes, but not the not the best news, Although I kind of anxious
- 22:47to see Brown play a little bit. We saw him a little bit that
- 22:50that screen pass. He's got a he he he had to see
- 22:53that in his sleep. That was he had blockers getting
- 22:56out in front of him. This was in his bigger players.
- 22:59It wasn't a game, obviously, right.
- 23:01He it was all set up for them there.
- 23:03He just you know, it happens, I guess.
- 23:06I mean, if you go back to Iowa football, you've seen under
- 23:08throwing balls for, I mean, Jake Christiansen did it for three
- 23:10years for crying out loud. But Hank Brown was very good in
- 23:14fall. He was very good in the spring.
- 23:15But the time he got here, he was one of these guys.
- 23:18You think back to April, I know Gronowski wasn't, you know, he
- 23:21wasn't part of the spring ball, but they were talking up Hank
- 23:23Brown way back then. They were talking up Hank Brown
- 23:27in April or in August as well. Now it sounds like he's going to
- 23:31get maybe his first opportunity to do so.
- 23:33And it is a different team. It's a different team to the
- 23:36fact that, you know, the tight ends have been able to not
- 23:39carry, but certainly be a huge part of this offense over God.
- 23:42I don't know, the last dozen years and and obviously that's
- 23:46not the case this year. Do we have David back?
- 23:48I believe that we do. I think I I sent him a zoom
- 23:51link. So we're going to see if this
- 23:52one works and and if it does, then we'll be able to go this
- 23:55direction and get him on there. So let's see if we can get David
- 24:00on here in just a moment. I think he is clicking on the
- 24:03link right now and we'll get David Eichelt with us
- 24:05momentarily. He's got his mic muted though,
- 24:08so we got to get that wrapped. Up.
- 24:10Yeah, that. Well, that won't.
- 24:11Work that won't work. No, it won't work in radio.
- 24:14The Wisconsin team itself. Your thoughts?
- 24:17Wisconsin. We'll see him again, but blown
- 24:21out by Alabama? Well, maybe Alabama's not.
- 24:23No, what? I totally agree with you.
- 24:25I totally agree with you. Ty Simpson's a good player.
- 24:27Ty Simpson is moving up Heisman lists.
- 24:29I'm not sure where he is. He's got to be in the top five
- 24:31after that one. This is this game, this Alabama
- 24:34game this week. It's got a little intrigue to
- 24:36it. I mean, Vanderbilt of all teams
- 24:38going in unbeaten to take on Alabama.
- 24:41This is going to be this going to be a tricky spot for I think
- 24:45for Vanderbilt. I mean, especially when he
- 24:48consider what happened last year, what Saban said prior to
- 24:50the game talking about the SEC and how tough it is to play most
- 24:53well, the exception of this one or something like that.
- 24:56Of course, they very quick to get that up on the Jumbotron
- 24:59once Vanderbilt had dispatched Alabama last year.
- 25:03But Pavian, he's still going through his fight with the NCAA.
- 25:06He's trying to get more eligibility.
- 25:08Do you think he's going to win? He.
- 25:11Won this one. I didn't think this was I mean,
- 25:14we've obviously seen a seismic shift when it comes to athletes.
- 25:18And some of the, you know, they're getting paid now, right?
- 25:21Remember when they dipped their toe in the water and they were
- 25:23allowed to go back for seconds at the training table and that
- 25:27was going to ruin college sports And all of a sudden now they're
- 25:29getting paid Now all of a sudden, Juco's not counting
- 25:33against you. I I'm not sure where I sit on
- 25:36that one. He's still playing, right?
- 25:38You know he's still playing and he is.
- 25:40There's not. There was nothing other than
- 25:41perhaps grades that prevented him from going to the school of
- 25:45his choice. There's been, you know, some
- 25:47interesting talk with the NCAA. What we're going to get to
- 25:53doesn't have to be give him five years, what, whatever.
- 25:57Five to play for? Five to play?
- 25:58No, just five. Just five, period.
- 26:01But this seven years, I mean, you, you look around, there's
- 26:04guys that are three-year veterans in the NFL at the
- 26:06quarterback position and Diego Pavia is still playing college
- 26:09football. Yeah, it's too much.
- 26:12We don't. Do we want it to turn into this?
- 26:14Do we want to see a 38 year old Diego Pavia running around and
- 26:17playing for the latest program that's gonna pay him?
- 26:20No. No.
- 26:21Is that what we want college athletics to turn into?
- 26:23No, absolutely not. So you want them to play five,
- 26:27Period. Give them 5.
- 26:28Even don't have to worry about restrictions.
- 26:30No, four games, none of that. You got five years, boom, five
- 26:33years, period. And that can be a junior college
- 26:35that can be at the D2 and AIA, whatever it is, but you have
- 26:40five years. Or you can leave, go to the pro,
- 26:42or just leave and. I mean, isn't that?
- 26:46I don't know, I like 5 to play 4.
- 26:51But now we we got the sham of a four-game red shirt.
- 26:55I mean, that's not. Red shirt and now no longer the
- 26:57bull is held against you, right? And then then when it comes to
- 27:02basketball, you factor in, well, you can only play a certain
- 27:05percentage of the you're trying to do the math.
- 27:07They've played eight games. This is going to equate to a
- 27:10medical red shirt. It's changed so much strength.
- 27:14You may as well go another step forward.
- 27:15Right. Yeah, just maybe.
- 27:16We'll take another step forward. Stacking it on top of each other
- 27:19and who knows what this is eventually going to turn out to
- 27:21be, what it's going to look like.
- 27:23There's the murmurs again about a potential breaking away of the
- 27:27SEC in the Big 10. I saw something about the
- 27:29potential that the NFL would have some backing behind that,
- 27:32really. In what respect?
- 27:34Just basically. Trying to do financial.
- 27:36Backing and be some kind of farm system and there's talk of a
- 27:39draft. I mean, there's there's all
- 27:41kinds of thoughts and theories and what this actually is going
- 27:44to look like in the big picture of things, which again, if we
- 27:47wanted the NFL, we have the NFL. Do we need the minor league NFL?
- 27:51No, we don't. We've already got it.
- 27:53And I mean, you're a kid in Ankeny and you get drafted by NC
- 28:00State. You have no connections there.
- 28:03It it doesn't have, if you actually do want to study, it
- 28:06doesn't have the programs that you want.
- 28:07Can can we really do that with the draft of high school kids?
- 28:10It's one thing. Now why are you hearing this?
- 28:13It's. It's all over, you know, just
- 28:15random places. It's not, I don't think there's
- 28:18any validity behind it. But these kind of thoughts are
- 28:20out there and high-ranking people want things like that.
- 28:24The way it looks at it, a private equity when they get
- 28:26involved. But then if there's a financial
- 28:29aspect and at minimum you're making, you know, a couple
- 28:31$100,000 a year, well, hell, I'll go hang on Raleigh.
- 28:34Yeah, sure. We'll see.
- 28:37I want to go since we got a minute or two.
- 28:39Brett, your mark is going to take his league across to London
- 28:43next year. Arizona State and is it K State,
- 28:47Arizona State, K State or it's Kansas?
- 28:49Arizona State and Kansas are going to play in London.
- 28:53I think it's like Week 3 of the week 3 or Week 4.
- 28:57It's a late September game. He tried it with Mexico.
- 29:00He wanted to take a game to Mexico.
- 29:02That did not go over well. But this is this is a done deal.
- 29:06This is going to happen. Your thoughts?
- 29:08Wembley Stadium, it will be a Kansas home game.
- 29:10I saw that is also a piece of this one.
- 29:12And it is a conference game, right?
- 29:14Yes. As far as I understand, I didn't
- 29:16see anything that said that it wasn't.
- 29:18But the UD and Jack Classic will be the third Big 12 football
- 29:21game in two seasons in Europe. Of course, Iowa State, K State
- 29:24this year, TCU against North Carolina next year, that'll also
- 29:27be in Dublin. And then this game with Kansas
- 29:30and Arizona State. Trying to build a brand, trying
- 29:33to do different things but. So what's the difference?
- 29:35Why, why, Why are people welcoming this and not Mexico?
- 29:39Well, I don't know about that part, but I think the reason
- 29:44that this I think can be really smart.
- 29:47What about the start time? Because if you put this at 11:00
- 29:51central time, just lost in the mix.
- 29:54Is this going to be a morning kickoff?
- 29:56Is this going to be 830 like we see in the NFL?
- 29:58Yes, the answer is yes. Then that makes sense.
- 30:01I agree with you. You get the window, you get.
- 30:03It's a six. Hour time difference over there
- 30:05to here. And what are you going to do
- 30:07instead of watching game day? You're going to watch the game.
- 30:09You're going to have the game. I think it makes a ton of sense
- 30:12in that aspect because you don't put Kansas, Arizona State at
- 30:1611:00. Oh, I'm going to tune in.
- 30:17No, I'm, I'm going to bypass the Big 10.
- 30:19No, I'm going to bypass the SEC because I'm going to watch right
- 30:23Kansas and Arizona Stadium. By that time we should be into
- 30:26some pretty good games on the schedule.
- 30:28I think you have to nail on the head.
- 30:30I, I do. I'm not sure who had broadcast
- 30:35it obviously, but like, look what Sunday mornings are.
- 30:38Sunday mornings I think are gaining popularity.
- 30:40And Al Goodell says he wants, he wants every team to play in
- 30:43Europe or in Germany, go abroad for one game every single year,
- 30:48which is kind of, I think way over the top.
- 30:50What I'm waiting for when you talk about the NFL and the
- 30:53international games too, when are they going to go to Asia?
- 30:57When are they going to go to Japan?
- 30:58When are they going to go and do something like that?
- 31:00Because I remember way back in the day.
- 31:03I don't know if you remember this.
- 31:04You're in America at the time though. 89 onward.
- 31:06When Alvarez started to turn around, Wisconsin, OK, and their
- 31:12first good season, I think their first bowl season, if memory
- 31:15serves, they played, I want to say it was Michigan State in
- 31:19Japan. It was at the end of the season.
- 31:21I don't remember. It was the last game of the
- 31:22year. It was in late November.
- 31:24So this was a league game. It was a league game that was.
- 31:26Now, I don't remember if it was a Wisconsin home game or a
- 31:29Michigan State home game. And then it was a one off.
- 31:33I think so. I'm not positive if there were
- 31:35other games that were involved it didn't Hawaii play over there
- 31:38at some point? But that was a long time ago.
- 31:40I mean, that would talk about being at the forefront of
- 31:42things. Could that be a possibility?
- 31:44Is that something with time zones and everything else when
- 31:46you put that game? That's to be determined, But
- 31:49I've been waiting for that one for a while.
- 31:51All right. Feels like you're doing a pretty
- 31:52good job in Europe. I'm getting things and building.
- 31:55What about Asia? There's a lot of people over
- 31:57there, just in a lot of people over there when they go that
- 32:01direction. And suddenly, again, not knowing
- 32:04time zones off the top of my head, do we have a 11:00 PM
- 32:07kickoff? Do we have, you know, NFL after
- 32:09dark and something like that? I can go that direction.
- 32:12Is that going to work out well for you?
- 32:13But just a thought that jumped up there.
- 32:15But yeah, I'm almost positive. Wisconsin, Michigan State played
- 32:18in Japan. Well, I'm going to look it up
- 32:19during the break and we're going to take that break.
- 32:21We're going to be joined by Mitch Holtis, the voice of the
- 32:23Kansas City Chiefs. When we come back, we'll recap
- 32:27the game this past weekend, Look ahead to Monday Night Football,
- 32:29Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 32:35Hi, welcome back Miller and Condon Iowa Sports Radio
- 32:38Network. Just to clear something up from
- 32:39the last segment, Eric Heft called me the analyst for Iowa
- 32:43State football during the break. Apparently they've been playing
- 32:46over in Japan for these games started by looks of things.
- 32:52I'm on Wikipedia here 77 to 93 and Eric in for me and I just
- 32:57looked it up. He's 100% right.
- 32:58Oklahoma State and Texas Tech played there and Barry Sanders,
- 33:02that was his final regular season game.
- 33:04Barry Sanders actually went to a television station in Japan and
- 33:10was awarded his Heisman Trophy while over in Japan in 19, 88,
- 33:16his final game. And Trenton was right too good
- 33:19for Trent, 1993 Wisconsin, Michigan State, he pulled that
- 33:23one out. So this is not the first time
- 33:25they would have been playing over there.
- 33:26Let's get to Mitch Holtis, He is the voice of the Kansas City
- 33:30Chiefs. He joins us to recap the week
- 33:32and obviously Papa John's central Iowa sponsor.
- 33:35This Mitch, got to be honest with you, as I always AM, and I
- 33:40know I speak for a lot of football fans, we kind of
- 33:43thought it was over. We kind of thought that, you
- 33:45know what, this is going to be the year that it doesn't happen.
- 33:49And we watched Sunday and we were, Oh my God, were we ever
- 33:52wrong. Seemingly, some people were
- 33:55throwing dirt on that Chiefs dynasty a little prematurely as
- 33:59it looked like a different team with deep threats that obviously
- 34:03#15 has now and is about to get even more so.
- 34:06Good God, they looked good, Mitch.
- 34:09Yeah, first time all three phasers were rolling really
- 34:12probably since the AFC championship game of a year ago
- 34:16against Buffalo. But Xavier Worthy makes such a
- 34:20difference because that and then I told you 2 weeks ago in the
- 34:24New York game that getting the horizontal side to side flip
- 34:28pass end around jet sweep action is everything.
- 34:34But when you get Brashard Smith and Xavier worthiest threats to
- 34:38do it, you've got just tons of speed on the field and then
- 34:41throwing Taekwon Thornton. But then for the defense now to
- 34:44put 3 great games together, 3 great games and taking the ball
- 34:48away and then to get a 48 yard kickoff return, 16 yard front
- 34:52return, set up a touchdown. I know Baltimore's beaten up on
- 34:55defense. I got it, but they're not beaten
- 34:57up on offense. And that offense came screaming
- 35:00in here at 111 points in three weeks.
- 35:03And other than that 71 yard run, in the end the defense pretty
- 35:06much held them in check. So here comes a trip to
- 35:10Jacksonville, one of the oddest 3 in one teams that I can
- 35:13remember, and I don't think anybody believes in this squad,
- 35:16but they've stacked up 3 victories.
- 35:18It's on the road. You know, Duvall, they're going
- 35:20to be fired up down there for a Monday night, a football game.
- 35:23They push the Chiefs in the playoffs a couple of years ago,
- 35:26Trevor Lawrence, just five touchdowns against 4
- 35:28interceptions. Just an odd one.
- 35:29Just what have you been able to who unearthed this week when
- 35:32you've been taking a look at Jacksonville and maybe some of
- 35:34the potential issues that are going to crop up come Monday
- 35:37night? Something jumps off the screen
- 35:40and off the pizza when you look at these guys, and that is they
- 35:43are a fast, frenzied, feisty defense.
- 35:47This is taking swimming lessons in the Amazon with piranha
- 35:51around you. They you think of Trayvon
- 35:54Walker, Josh Hines, Allen, very underrated.
- 35:57They get, you know, Travis Hunter in the draft.
- 35:59They traded up to get him. They have trying to get this 113
- 36:02takeaways in four weeks each game, each game.
- 36:06That's four games in a row. They've had at least three
- 36:09takeaways in every game. I thought, man, they're going to
- 36:11be working on some record. And then I found the 1935
- 36:15Chicago Bears had 67 takeaways in 12 games and somehow lost
- 36:20four games. But the Jags are taken away and
- 36:24then they get points off those takeaways.
- 36:25They have 41 points off takeaways. 9 times.
- 36:29They have started drives in the opponent 1/2 of the field
- 36:32because of the takeaways, and then they've rediscovered,
- 36:35recovered Travis ETN. So the fact that he has 1010
- 36:38plus runs and 2:10 plus touchdowns, and now Lawrence has
- 36:43actually become a complimentary piece.
- 36:45And then the other side of this, this is the first time in seven
- 36:48games Trevor Lawrence hasn't thrown a pick.
- 36:50So they're taking it away, not turning it over.
- 36:53This is a solid, feisty young team.
- 36:56Yeah, but Spag's defense is just playing out of their minds.
- 36:59Tranquil, I thought maybe had his best game in some time.
- 37:01There's Chanel down the field covering guys.
- 37:04Unbelievable effort out of that. Spag's defense, I don't know
- 37:07what he's doing differently, but boy, they're playing at a high
- 37:09level. Yeah, that first game was clunky
- 37:13for a lot of reasons. And honestly, I just talked to
- 37:16Drew literally before I jumped on with you guys, literally like
- 37:20within 5 minutes and he was telling me just about the
- 37:23energy. The energy so much better and
- 37:25then the execution. What Spags does more than any
- 37:29team and anybody in football right now, 10 is this whole mix
- 37:32and match thing. He's coming at you with a like a
- 37:35guy with 7 pitches in the baseball playoffs because he's
- 37:39personnel and it's scheme and some of it takes time, but some
- 37:44of it takes communication. But they're just right now
- 37:47they're clicking and they're going to have to against
- 37:50Jacksonville. They've got some weapons on this
- 37:52Jacksonville team. But right now, when this defense
- 37:55gets going, I mean, they just after the opening draft, five of
- 37:58the game, Baltimore goes right down and scores.
- 38:01You're thinking, oh, God, here they are.
- 38:02They're going to 40 again. They got shut down.
- 38:04The Chiefs on Redza are on 3rd down defense.
- 38:07The last two weeks are 4 of 20. They held New York of 1 of 10.
- 38:11They held the Ravens to three of 10.
- 38:14And that's hard to do. So yeah, they're playing at a
- 38:16pretty high level, this Chief's defense.
- 38:18You get the return of Xavier Worthy also soon, in a couple of
- 38:22weeks, you get the return of Rasheed Rice.
- 38:25He obviously is dealing with the suspension right now health
- 38:28wise. Any concerns there as he comes
- 38:30back and how are they working to acclimate them?
- 38:32What can he do before he's back from suspension?
- 38:36Trent, what we might do, and I say this humbly, we may show up
- 38:40at the Drake Relays with A4 by 100m team because these guys can
- 38:45fly. This is a lot of speed.
- 38:47Now, if you get them all together and keep in mind every
- 38:51week since we got Hollywood Brown and 20, they've never been
- 38:54together at the same time. We're talking a year and a half
- 38:57and that's really close to getting there.
- 38:58And then you throw in Taekwon Thornton and Burchard Smith and
- 39:01you have alternates to run this relay.
- 39:04So what happens is it just everything goes faster.
- 39:07And the thing I was talking to about can to have grown, this
- 39:10horizontal game opens up the vertical game.
- 39:13And what it also does, because everybody still brackets Kelsey.
- 39:16He still gets 1 1/2 to two men coverage.
- 39:19Kyle Hamilton was like locked in on him.
- 39:21You're not going to be able to do that because the four by 100m
- 39:24team will fly by you. So it's going to pose some real
- 39:26problems in the weeks ahead, especially when Rice comes back.
- 39:30But you're going to have to match speed for speed against
- 39:32Jacksonville is they may have the other than Ken's Denver
- 39:36team, which I think probably the best defense right now in the
- 39:38league. You're going to you got to match
- 39:40speed with speed. And that's what's going to
- 39:42happen in this Jacksonville game.
- 39:43It'll be when the Chiefs had the ball.
- 39:45It is going to be a light show because they're both sides are
- 39:48so fast. Music's playing.
- 39:50Mitch got the 15 seconds to talk Papa John's. 999 New York style
- 39:55one topping pizza. Fast, delicious, frenzied.
- 39:59It's not like taking a swimming lessons in the Amazon, so go get
- 40:02a pizza at papajohns.com. The Donaldsons are the best.
- 40:05Good stuff buddy. Thank you.
- 40:06Miss talk to you next week. Hour 2 coming up next.
- 40:08Miller and Condon. I was.
