- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Rachel saw that she was not giving Jacob any children.
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: She became jealous of her sister Leah.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: So Rachel said to Jacob, Give me children or I will die.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Jacob became angry with Rachel and said, I'm not God.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: He is the one who has caused you not to have children.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Then Rachel said, You can have my maid Bilhah sleep with her, and she will have a child for me.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: Then I can be a mother through her.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: So Rachel gave Bilha to her husband Jacob.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: He had sexual relations with Bilhah.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: She became pregnant and gave birth to a son for Jacob.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Rachel said, God has listened to my prayer.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: He decided to give me a son, so she named this son Dan.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: Bilha became pregnant again and gave Jacob a second son.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Rachel said, I have fought hard to compete with my sister, and I have won.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: So she named that son Neftali.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: Leah saw that she could have no more children, so she gave her slave girl Zilpah to Jacob.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Then Zilpa had a son.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Leah said, I am lucky, so she named the son Gad.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Zilpah gave birth to another son.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Leah said, I am very happy.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Now women will call me happy.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: So she named that son Asher.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: During the wheat harvest, Reuben went into the fields and found some special flowers.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: He brought them to his mother, Leah.
- 1:56SPEAKER_00: But Rachel said to Leah, please give me some of your son's flowers.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Leah answered, You have already taken away my husband.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: Now you are trying to take away my son's flowers.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: But Rachel answered, If you will give me your son's flowers, you can sleep with Jacob tonight.
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: Jacob came in from the fields that night.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: Leah saw him and went out to meet him.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: She said, You will sleep with me tonight.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: I have paid for you with my son's flowers.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: So Jacob slept with Leah that night.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Then God allowed Leah to become pregnant again.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: So she gave birth to a fifth son.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: She said God has given me a reward because I gave my slave to my husband.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So she named her son Isakar.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Leah became pregnant again and gave birth to a sixth son.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: She said, God has given me a fine gift.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: Now surely Jacob will accept me because I have given him six sons.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: So she named this son Zebulun.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Later Leah gave birth to a daughter, she named her Dinah.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Then God heard Rachel's prayer and made it possible for Rachel to have children.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: She became pregnant and gave birth to a son.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: She said, God has taken away my shame.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: Rachel named the son Joseph, saying, May the Lord give me another son.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: Jacob tricks Laban.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: After the birth of Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Now let me go back to my own homeland.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: Give me my wives and my children.
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: I've earned them by working for you, and you know that I served you well.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: Laban said to him, Please let me say something.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: I know that the Lord has blessed me because of you.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Tell me what I should pay you and I will give it to you.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Jacob answered, You know that I have worked hard for you, your flocks have grown and been well while I cared for them.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: When I came you had little, now you have much, much more.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: Every time I did something for you, the Lord blessed you.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Now it is time for me to work for myself.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: It is time to do things for my family.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Laban asked, Then what should I give you?
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Jacob answered, I don't want you to give me anything.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: I only want you to let me do this one thing.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: I will go back and take care of your sheep, but let me go through all of your flocks today and take every lamb with spots or stripes.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Let me take every black young goat and every female goat with stripes or spots.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: That will be my pay.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: In the future you can easily see if I'm honest.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: You can come to look at my flocks.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: If I have any goat that isn't spotted or any sheep that isn't black, you will know that I stole it.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Laban answered, I agree to that, we will do what you asked.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: But that day Laban hid all the male goats that had spots, and he hid all the female goats that had spots on them.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: He also hid the black sheep.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Laban told his sons to watch these sheep.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: So the sons took all the spotted animals and led them to another place.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: They traveled for three days.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Jacob stayed and took care of all of the animals that were left.
- 6:10SPEAKER_00: Then Jacob cut green branches from poplar and almond trees.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: He stripped off some of the bark so that the branches had white stripes on them.
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: He put branches in front of the flocks at the watering places.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: When the animals came to drink, they also mated in that place.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Then when the young goats mated in front of the branches, the ones that were born spotted, striped or black.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Jacob separated the spotted and the black animals from the other animals in the flock.
- 6:49SPEAKER_00: He kept his animals separate from Laban's.
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Anytime the stronger animals in the flock were mating, Jacob put the branches before their eyes.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: The animals mated near those branches, but when the weaker animals mated, Jacob did not put the branches there.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: So the young animals born from the weak animals were Laban's, and the young animals born from the stronger animals were Jacob's.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: In this way Jacob became very rich.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: He had large flocks, many servants, camels, and donkeys.
