- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update. I'm Brian Medore.
- 0:07Speaker 1: A local law firm has filed class action claims against
- 0:10Speaker 1: government for physical abuse against students by members of the
- 0:14Speaker 1: Irish Christian Brothers. Lawyer Bob Buckingham says the lawsuits have
- 0:18Speaker 1: been made possible by changes to the legislation made a
- 0:21Speaker 1: couple of years ago that removed the limitation period on
- 0:24Speaker 1: cases involving physical abuse. The cases involve schools where Irish
- 0:29Speaker 1: Christian brothers taught, including Mount Cashel, St. Patrick's Hall, Brother Rice, St. Bon, St. Francis,
- 0:36Speaker 1: and Holy Cross.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Prior to 2024, if you were physically abused in schools,
- 0:41Speaker 2: you could not file a claim. If you were sexually abused,
- 0:45Speaker 2: then you could because there's no limitation period. So we
- 0:47Speaker 2: had a change in legislation back in 2024. That has
- 0:50Speaker 2: now permitted us to move ahead with these physical abuse claims.
- 0:54Speaker 1: He says the claims are against the provincial government.
- 0:58Speaker 2: The government in our position is responsible for not pursuing
- 1:01Speaker 2: good faith investigations through the police and failing to act
- 1:04Speaker 2: on the issues, failing to provide proper child welfare care
- 1:07Speaker 2: for these kids and failing to warn parents and failing
- 1:10Speaker 2: to remove kids from dangerous situations. And so we're going
- 1:12Speaker 2: to pursue these cases. These cases go way beyond what
- 1:16Speaker 2: was considered at the time appropriate physical discipline.
- 1:22Speaker 1: Police in Lab West seeking the public's help as they
- 1:26Speaker 1: investigate a fire in Wabush last month. Officers responded to
- 1:30Speaker 1: a fire set in the pan of a truck parked
- 1:32Speaker 1: outside the Wabush Hotel on the night of August 14th.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Hotel guests put out the fire. There was no damage
- 1:39Speaker 1: to the truck. RNC seeking any witnesses or video footage
- 1:43Speaker 1: from the area between 8 and 9 o'clock on Friday,
- 1:46Speaker 1: August 14th. Anybody with info asked to contact the authorities.
- 1:51Speaker 1: A mother in St. John's has been reunited with her
- 1:54Speaker 1: young daughter who had been taken to Egypt by her father.
- 1:58Speaker 1: The OCM's Linda Swain reports.
- 2:00Speaker 3: An arrest warrant for the child's father was issued by
- 2:03Speaker 3: the RNC one year ago after he picked up the
- 2:05Speaker 3: five-year-old and took her back to his native Egypt. The
- 2:08Speaker 3: little girl's mother, Bushra Marboui, traveled to Egypt to try
- 2:12Speaker 3: to track her daughter down and bring her back to St.
- 2:14Speaker 3: John's with the help of some local supporters. According to
- 2:17Speaker 3: a release issued to VOCM News, the family acknowledges the
- 2:20Speaker 3: help of Egypt's Ministry of Justice and is asking for
- 2:23Speaker 3: continued cooperation as remaining legal and travel matters are resolved.
- 2:27Speaker 3: The Executive Director of Violence Prevention Avalon East, Olivia Lynch,
- 2:31Speaker 3: says they're continuing to support Bushra and are keeping the
- 2:34Speaker 3: community informed through the process. The child's mother is also
- 2:37Speaker 3: offering her thanks to the many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians who
- 2:40Speaker 3: have helped her through the ordeal.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Bay Roberts RCMP have identified a child shown in a
- 2:46Speaker 1: recent video circulating on social media who was assaulted by
- 2:50Speaker 1: other students. Police say the victim is being supported by
- 2:53Speaker 1: them and the school community. An investigation is underway. RCMP
- 2:58Speaker 1: urge anybody who witnessed the incident, including those who filmed
- 3:01Speaker 1: the altercation, to contact the Bay Roberts Detachment. I'm Brian Medore.
