- 0:03Radio Network as we take you until 2:00.

- 0:12I think I Colt is in tomorrow. Guess those throughout the
- 0:17remainder of the week until Sean gets back on Friday.
- 0:20Still to come this hour, Bill Seals bottom of the hour just
- 0:23got through with Matt Campbell's press conference.
- 0:25We'll recap that with Bill Seals from cyclonereport.com.
- 0:28Part of on three media at 1:30. Transplays of the day at about
- 0:321:50. But right now, time to talk some
- 0:34baseball. We do it every Monday with our
- 0:36friend Matt Snyder from CBSSports.com.
- 0:39Matt Trenton, Ken, How are you? I am great.
- 0:43Other than the fact that the Brewers just won't stop winning.
- 0:45It's. Unbelievable to run that they're
- 0:47on between them in the National League and the Red Sox in the
- 0:50American League. Both of these teams on a
- 0:53remarkable run. So let's start with the Red Sox.
- 0:55Can they win the East? Yeah, I think so too.
- 0:59I mean, I don't I, I, I think I would still stick with the Blue
- 1:02Jays, but it's remarkable that all of a sudden the Red Sox are
- 1:08three games away from having the best record in the American
- 1:10League. Like 2 1/2, actually, yeah, 2
- 1:141/2 from the best record in the American League.
- 1:17I it's no, it's three. Sorry, 3.
- 1:19Yeah, but still. Yeah, it's 3.
- 1:22Sweep the Astros, who were red. Hawks.
- 1:25Yeah, and they just recently beat the Dodgers two out of
- 1:29three at home. Garrett Crochet, easy and
- 1:33obvious age, but Lucas Giolito starting to look more and more
- 1:36like the All Star version of Giolito.
- 1:38Brian Baio has been great offensively.
- 1:41Trevor Story now kind of looks like the Trevor Story of old.
- 1:44Meanwhile, Roman Anthony's growing up really, really fast.
- 1:48Things are just kind of starting to come together right now.
- 1:51You know, the Red Sox are interesting because they didn't
- 1:54do much. The fan base was upset.
- 1:56They have that. Joe Ryan rumour.
- 2:01They they had a rumour, but when you're working on the periphery,
- 2:04and it's the Red Sox too, we're not talking about a team that
- 2:07struggles financially, it's the Red Sox.
- 2:10Yet we saw this happen with that White Sox team 30 years ago.
- 2:13We're kind of brings the clubhouse together, you know,
- 2:16blank the front office, we'll do it ourselves.
- 2:18We're fine here. Could you see that maybe being a
- 2:20little bit of a rallying cry here in Boston?
- 2:23Yeah, definitely, for sure. It it it's one of those things
- 2:27like I don't think that for example, just trading Raphael
- 2:31Devers all of a sudden made them better, just like it made the
- 2:34Giants worse. I think the Red Sox were should
- 2:36were better than they were playing and that was going to
- 2:38even out of the Giants were playing too well and that that
- 2:40he put out as well. I I totally could see them also
- 2:44kind of saying like, look, they traded away one of our best
- 2:47players earlier in the year and they didn't get us enough help
- 2:49with the trade deadline. But you know what, we're good.
- 2:51We're just going to do it on our own.
- 2:52So yeah, yeah, you could totally see that.
- 2:55Felt like they kind of used another starting pitcher there,
- 2:59as you mentioned, like with the Joe Ryan thing, really fast.
- 3:02But it apparently there were some sources that said not even
- 3:06close. That was never even a real
- 3:07discussion. So, yeah, I thought Bresla was
- 3:10going to be a little bit more aggressive.
- 3:12But then again, they're playing well right now.
- 3:14So you know what, we'll see. Maybe they didn't need to do
- 3:18more. Maybe Walker Buehler just need
- 3:20to start pitching like we know he's capable.
- 3:22And with G Alito continuing to kind of lock things in, maybe
- 3:25they'll end up having a really good playoff rotation.
- 3:28We'll get out of the American League East, but I got one more
- 3:30for you. Are the the Yankees quit on
- 3:32Aaron Boom? I mean, the errors that they're
- 3:34making and the and the fashion that they're making them, I
- 3:37mean, it's just it's it's almost unbelievable that the Yankees
- 3:40can be this deficient on defence.
- 3:43Talking about the Yankees, a team that was supposed to win
- 3:45the American League. I get the judges all he might be
- 3:47back tomorrow. So that's at least good news.
- 3:49But the way they're booting the ball around, whether it's
- 3:52infielders or outfielders, it's embarrassing.
- 3:55Yeah, and things can be contagious like that.
- 3:57Sometimes when it's good, things are contagious.
- 4:00Sometimes when it's going bad. I mean, if you just look at
- 4:02Friday night, the the three relievers were all new guys who
- 4:07who blew that. They were all three guys that
- 4:08they get at the trade deadline. There's no way they could have
- 4:10quit on Boone because they didn't know him before and not
- 4:13as the manager. And and that error in the ninth
- 4:15in the right field was Caballero.
- 4:16He's new. And so I, I think it's just one
- 4:21of the things that it's a coincidence in some ways that
- 4:24it's happening all at once. But I do think there's something
- 4:27to the sloppiness and the way that the team has been run for a
- 4:30while. And this goes all the way back
- 4:32to the World Series with the discussion that we've had.
- 4:34When the Dodgers apparently said in the offseason, I think it was
- 4:38Chris Taylor said, like, we were just waiting for them to mess
- 4:40up. And sure enough, and that fifth
- 4:42inning for the Yankees, it wasn't like some of these also
- 4:45range. It was Aaron Judge who dropped
- 4:46the fly ball. It was Garrett Cole who did not
- 4:48cover first base. And at some point, you're just a
- 4:52team that makes sloppy mistakes. And that's kind of what the
- 4:55Yankees right now are becoming known for.
- 4:57So I don't think I would phrase it as quit on Boone, but there's
- 5:01something there and it has to start with the manager.
- 5:05So there, there's definitely something there.
- 5:07What is the most dangerous team that is currently outside the
- 5:11playoffs looking in? Is there a team that you look at
- 5:14and say if they find a way to get in, this is a team that can
- 5:18win a couple of series, get to ACS at minimum, you know
- 5:20something like that. Is there a team that you would
- 5:23target? Yeah, I hate to go back to this,
- 5:26well, since they were my pre season AL champion and then I
- 5:29gave up on them. But the Rangers, yeah, I mean,
- 5:31if you look at they're capable on offense of hitting much
- 5:35better than they've hit basically the whole season.
- 5:37So many of their guys have talent, whether it's a younger
- 5:40guy like Wyatt Langford or Evan Carter, or if it's a veteran
- 5:42like Adolis Garcia or Marcus Demian, up and down that line,
- 5:45if they've got a lot of talent. Bruce Bocchi always figures out
- 5:49his bullpen in the postseason. It's one of the Super powers.
- 5:52And then you go to the rotation and you say, how about Jacob
- 5:55degrom, Nathan Ivaldi and now Merrill Kelly?
- 5:57All of a sudden you've got three guys who can throw like post
- 6:00season aces. And you know who have done it
- 6:02before? Granted, degrom, you'd have to
- 6:05go back to 2015, but they've all done it at different times.
- 6:08In 2023 was Ivaldi and Merrill Kelly both So just on different
- 6:13teams. But yeah, there's if the Rangers
- 6:16get in, there's a chance. And then that league is wide
- 6:19open. Every single good team there has
- 6:22had really, really awful stress, whether it's the Tigers having
- 6:26lost 1213 very recently, the Blue Jays probably right now,
- 6:30the answer is probably right now like that league is so wide
- 6:33open. I want to get to Fry fest in a
- 6:36second. I mean, the the Saturday night
- 6:38game, Jeez. So is but one more since we're
- 6:43kind of talking on the on the on this topic now is the is the
- 6:46wild card done in the National League?
- 6:49I mean, is there conceit? Because it sure seems like it
- 6:52would be a stretch for the Reds to get in there for back of the
- 6:55Padres. It seems like whoever doesn't
- 6:57win the central, whoever doesn't win the east and then probably
- 7:01the Padres. But I just can't see the Reds of
- 7:03the giants. Marlins are playing.
- 7:05Well, I got to give them credit. Nobody saw this coming, but it
- 7:07seems like it's over to me, Matt.
- 7:10Yeah, how about that? The Marlins are sticks out with
- 7:12the Giants ahead of the Cardinals.
- 7:16I could see the Reds getting hot and Hunter Green will come back.
- 7:20And you've got Hunter Green and Nicholas all there and the
- 7:22rotation along with Andrew Abbott.
- 7:24And they've got some talent on offense.
- 7:26And you've got Terry Francona there who can help bring him
- 7:28together down the stretch. It just it doesn't seem like
- 7:31they're all the way there. Seems like they needed probably
- 7:33one more big bat in front of the trade deadline.
- 7:36And if you're going to talk about, well, who are the Reds
- 7:39going to rundown four behind the Padres?
- 7:41The Padres are way better. They are five behind the Mets.
- 7:44The Mets are definitely better. And they're, what, 7 1/2?
- 7:48And the Cubs, The Cubs are way, way, way better.
- 7:50So, yeah, I think that these six are probably the exact six teams
- 7:56in the National League. And on the American League side,
- 7:58I do think there's a chance the Rangers get in, you know, maybe
- 8:02the Royals find a way to get high.
- 8:05It's settled on the annual side in the American League.
- 8:08Almost nothing would surprise me as as up and down as almost all
- 8:12those teams. I'm with you there.
- 8:13If we go back to what a year ago at this time, nobody had the
- 8:16Tigers in. It's true.
- 8:17We know certainly what happened over the last six weeks for them
- 8:21as they got red hot. Take us back to the Speedway
- 8:23Classic and the disaster. Obviously rain, you're not going
- 8:27to be able to do anything like that.
- 8:29I was just so excited to see it and to have it delayed and and
- 8:32you see the downpour of the people just sitting there with
- 8:35their umbrellas if they were lucky.
- 8:36It was just a sad scene overall. What was your take away from the
- 8:39Speedway Classic? Yeah, not everything.
- 8:42Maybe this was us giving the karma, some of that karma back
- 8:45for how perfectly the first Field of Dream game went.
- 8:48It's like you can just never have everything go just
- 8:51absolutely perfectly. I it was cool.
- 8:54I liked that yesterday that when we saw the home runs, they had
- 8:57the the NASCAR, the car driving around for the home run.
- 9:00That was pretty cool. Not everything is going to hit
- 9:03perfectly. I understand Major League
- 9:05Baseball taking the shot on it and then their heart was in the
- 9:07right place. But yeah, it it didn't.
- 9:10It definitely did not go off well with Saturday night.
- 9:13And you can't control the weather.
- 9:15But yeah, it's it would have been way cooler if it just would
- 9:18have gone off as expected Saturday.
- 9:20And it didn't have to delay Sunday, that's for sure.
- 9:22No hot dog buns of all things. I mean, good God, no cheese.
- 9:26For the. Yeah, no cheese for the nachos
- 9:29and cheese just here's your nachos.
- 9:31What do you want anyways? So will, will baseball go
- 9:36forward if they already announced what they're going to
- 9:38do with this? I don't want to call it a
- 9:40gimmick, but with this gimmick, I guess next year.
- 9:44For sure. I, I don't know.
- 9:46I don't know exactly. But look, we've, we've seen the
- 9:49Little League classic with the Field of Dreams, the the Negro
- 9:52League special. That was outstanding.
- 9:54It was great. I wouldn't mind seeing them do
- 9:57something in Puerto Rico. I don't know about the logistics
- 10:02of a Cuba type game, but that seems like that would be really
- 10:05awesome, especially if you found a couple teams that had some
- 10:09Cuban players. I wouldn't mind seeing them take
- 10:12it to the Caribbean at some point.
- 10:14You know, similar to how we've seen games in Mexico and, you
- 10:18know, Australia, South Korea, Japan.
- 10:21I wouldn't mind seeing them take it to the Caribbean, especially
- 10:23the places that are close. So it's not that long of a road
- 10:27trip. But yeah, I mean, I think
- 10:29there's a lot of different things that they could do.
- 10:32And you know, like I said, I thought it was cool the idea to
- 10:35have a game in the field of a NASCAR track and everything.
- 10:38So I'm sure they'll they'll come up with something else that that
- 10:41that will also be. Fun.
- 10:42I love the numbers on the jerseys, the NASCAR style of
- 10:45number. I thought that was a really good
- 10:47time. They did some good things to
- 10:48just. Yeah.
- 10:49I mean, you can't do anything about 3, No, Right?
- 10:51Yeah. No, nothing.
- 10:53Yeah, saw the VIPs and what they paid for those concerts and.
- 10:56Selfishly, I'm still part of a Major League record because I
- 10:59think the. The Rockies, The.
- 11:00Rockies home opener is still the most attended baseball regular
- 11:04season. I know that they played some of
- 11:05the Coliseum for the Dodgers back in the day before Dodger
- 11:08Stadium was built, but I think the the regular season with the
- 11:12highest number of fans was Expos Rockies April to 2 or 1993
- 11:19eighty 1000. I think of us where there was
- 11:21crazy. That was was great though.
- 11:24Wild time. And boy, the balls flying out of
- 11:25that ballpark was different level.
- 11:28Speaking of balls flying out, well, the Brewers do it again.
- 11:31So they bring up Mizaroski goes to the IL All right, we're going
- 11:34to bring another rookie up here. Logan Henderson was outstanding
- 11:37in the game yesterday. Is that how?
- 11:39He got to the game, his parents had to drive him.
- 11:41There were no flights. Just incredible, just absolutely
- 11:44incredible. This Brewers team, we kind of
- 11:46touch that at the top. But I want to go to Mizaroski.
- 11:48Look, if there was a playoff game tomorrow, he'd be pitching
- 11:51right? And this, this is a way to
- 11:52circumvent and and slow down those innings limits, right?
- 11:56Absolutely. They were already starting to
- 11:58kind of ramp down his usage. The the game before the Cubs, it
- 12:03was at Seattle only three and 2/3 innings.
- 12:06He hadn't even given a run, 64 pitches.
- 12:08And they told him and that Cubs game, 4 innings, 80 pitches.
- 12:12They're they're they were starting to be careful about his
- 12:14workload. And I think some of this
- 12:17honestly goes back to like the Strasbourg shutdown.
- 12:20And the thing that I thought was the most messed up about that
- 12:23was the Nationals never did anything creative during that
- 12:26year. They never went to a six man
- 12:28rotation. They never skipped him a few
- 12:29spots. They never invented a lower back
- 12:31injury. They just pitched him until they
- 12:33said he was done and that was that so teams now the Brewers
- 12:38are planning on being in the playoffs.
- 12:40So now they're planning on let's say we get to the World Series.
- 12:45We want Jacob Bizarowski firing on all cylinders through the
- 12:49World Series. So now how are we going to get
- 12:51him through October? And he just got hit on the shin
- 12:54by Osaya Suzuki hard rounder. So let's just say he has a shin
- 12:57injury. Yes, absolutely.
- 12:59And they they could give him two or three weeks and then they can
- 13:01ramp them back up and by the plus he'll be hitting his full
- 13:04stride. I'm honestly as a Cubs fan,
- 13:07waiting for the Cubs to try some more.
- 13:08Something similar with Kate Horton as well.
- 13:11Who has to be their number 3 starter in the playoffs at this
- 13:13point, correct? Probably.
- 13:16I mean, let's see how Taion is when he comes back.
- 13:20He might go with the veteran there, but awful.
- 13:22Yesterday, but it's a rehab start.
- 13:24Yeah. Oh, was he?
- 13:27Yeah. Two good innings, 1 inning, he
- 13:28gave up a bunch of runs, but but it's a rehab start so you can't
- 13:32get too excited either. Way, yeah, but Horton is
- 13:34definitely in there. Like Colin raised.
- 13:36He's not going to be in there. Nope.
- 13:37I'll be surprised if Soraka and he pitch.
- 13:40He pitches tonight. Soraka I believe.
- 13:43I think he does, yeah. I think he.
- 13:45Does Soraka against Ladola right?
- 13:46Yeah, yeah. All right, Matt, I've waited
- 13:50long enough. Here you go.
- 13:51Buckle up. I have taken my blood pressure
- 13:54medicine, so I'm just going to keep it open-ended for you.
- 13:57Give me your take away and well, one way or the other, what I
- 14:01should be thinking as a Minnesota Twins fan.
- 14:05Just hoping that there's a sale and it goes through as soon as
- 14:08possible. I mean it.
- 14:10For me, the problem goes back to you win a playoff series in
- 14:142020. 3 was it? 2023 won a playoff series and
- 14:20then almost immediately after the season ends, we hear, hey,
- 14:24they need to trim payroll. They can't go that.
- 14:27Are you kidding me? Like you just advanced in the
- 14:29playoffs. You have all kinds of fan
- 14:32excitement. Excited, as excited as the fans
- 14:35have been in years and years and years.
- 14:37And the first thing you're going to do is let it leak out that
- 14:39you need to trim payroll because the owners are worried about
- 14:42their bottom line. Get out of here.
- 14:43Get out of here. It all traces back to that for
- 14:46me. Obviously things kind of
- 14:50collapsed on the stretch last year.
- 14:51As we we've said on this show, we traced it back to the Joe
- 14:54Ryan injury. Everything kind of fell apart
- 14:56after that. And then this year, other than
- 14:58that ridiculously long winning streak, which hilariously seems
- 15:01like such an out here right now, but things were broken, so
- 15:06changes needed to be made. I understand that.
- 15:08But for me, it's on ownership and it goes back to right after
- 15:12that playoff, advancing in the playoffs and then just throwing
- 15:15a wet blanket over that. And we just need the owners to
- 15:18to get out of there. Which of the two teams that we
- 15:21watched last night, on Sunday Night Baseball, or both look
- 15:24like a world, a team that could win a World Series to you?
- 15:28I still think both, but I I would rank the Phillies ahead of
- 15:31the Tigers at this point. The Tigers need to play more
- 15:36quality baseball and and sustain it moving forward after having
- 15:39lost 12 of 13 there. I don't think they did enough in
- 15:42front of the trade deadline. They needed to show up the
- 15:44bullpen and rotation a little more.
- 15:46Although. Charlie Martin.
- 15:47He was good last night. Yep, I agree with.
- 15:48You but you know, 41 years old, but the Phillies you're looking
- 15:53at and let's say the playoff rotation is first of all, Zach
- 15:57Wheeler and Christopher Sanchez are bases right now.
- 16:00They just is absolutely an 8. They're probably going to get
- 16:03back Aaron Nola before the playoffs.
- 16:05So then Knowles are four with Ranger Suarez is a three.
- 16:07That means you can kick Caseless Lizardo Lizardo to the bullpen
- 16:11where now they've got Johann Duran at the back end of the
- 16:15bullpen. You know, it's the offense.
- 16:18Maybe they could have used a bat.
- 16:20I kind of, I really wanted them to go out and get Luis Robert.
- 16:22I think he would have fit perfectly there and would have
- 16:24been, but they've got pieces on offense to get hot.
- 16:28It's just going to be a matter of getting out of the right
- 16:29time. I think the Phillies are one of
- 16:31the most attractive teams in terms of how the postseason
- 16:35roster shaked out in terms of being able to make a deep run.
- 16:39Couldn't agree with you more. So I see last night just
- 16:41watching Sports Center and I see on the bottom line Julio
- 16:43Rodriguez goes 2020 for the 4th and 2nd of year to open up and I
- 16:48saw a quote from him. Big accomplishment.
- 16:50And yet what I think of Julio Rodriguez right now, I think of
- 16:55a guy that's been a disappointment.
- 16:57Is that fair? Yeah.
- 16:58Except for the 9th inning on either Friday or Saturday night.
- 17:02It's interesting because I, I was actually thinking about
- 17:06writing sometime this week about how he's probably a little
- 17:10underrated because he burst under the scene.
- 17:14He got that big long ext 2023. He was fourth in MVP voting.
- 17:18And some people such as myself predicted him to win MVP last
- 17:22year and he had a down year. And I think that part of this is
- 17:28offense is so suppressed in T-Mobile Park that if he was
- 17:32elsewhere, he probably would have a lot better rate stats.
- 17:37But also he's he's such a good defender.
- 17:40He's such a good baserunner. He does have the power.
- 17:42He's like, I think we were expecting he's going to start
- 17:46stacking MVP and what he didn't now it's man, he's such a
- 17:49disappointment that I think it's got the point that he's actually
- 17:52underrated and underappreciated. Cal Raleigh hitting under 200
- 17:56since June the 1st which is kind of snuck up on me.
- 17:59Don't. Go to the Don't go to the Home
- 18:01Run Derby. Yeah, it's it's unbelief.
- 18:03They're a tough team, I'm telling you.
- 18:05I think that the of the six divisions, if I could only watch
- 18:09one, as far as how the playoffs are going to unfold, I think the
- 18:12the AL West is going to be bananas.
- 18:14I really do. And I think that the Astros open
- 18:17the door this weekend by getting swept by the Red Sox.
- 18:20Yeah, and you've got the Mariners right there, the
- 18:22Rangers, who are very capable, they can run the Angels for not
- 18:25being a very good team, are actually not horrible at all.
- 18:29And then the A's actually have a lot of fun players, especially
- 18:32Nick Kurtz. So it's yeah, it's a really fun
- 18:34division. Does the Cal Raleigh thing was
- 18:37funny because about 3 weeks before the All Star break I was
- 18:42on CBS Sports HQ on video and I said my biggest prediction for
- 18:46the rest of the season was that Cal Raleigh was going to slow
- 18:48down with his home run pace because how could he not slow
- 18:51down and everybody was going to blame it on the Home Run Derby.
- 18:55Absolutely happens every year. Fun week ahead of us, Matt
- 18:59Snyder, CBSSports.com recovers Major League Baseball and does a
- 19:03terrific job. We love talking to Matt on
- 19:05Mondays, and we'll do it again next week.
- 19:07Matt, thank you. Have a wonderful week, my
- 19:08friend. Thanks a lot.
- 19:10All right, take care. Yeah, good to talk to you.
- 19:12Matt Snyder, CBSSports.com. Another fun week of baseball
- 19:15behind us, and onward we go. Soon it'll be September and
- 19:19Yikes. I didn't jump in, but when you
- 19:22brought up, the playoffs are set in the National League.
- 19:24They are, don't you think? I don't know what it is.
- 19:28I still like this Reds team. Yeah, chasing down the Padres 4
- 19:33back is going to be difficult, but there's something about a
- 19:37couple of those young arms like the guys like Ladolo, who's
- 19:39going tonight. They're not great, but they're
- 19:43they're pretty good. Speaking of B minuses, you threw
- 19:45out that number that grade earlier.
- 19:48They got a lot of B minuses on that singers.
- 19:49One of them. Singer.
- 19:50Absolutely Another B. Brian Hayes comes over, hit a
- 19:54big home run the other day. They, they have no power, have
- 19:58none. They came back.
- 19:59How about the Rockies game on Friday night?
- 20:01Did you? See this?
- 20:03They're down. 9 Nothing after the first inning.
- 20:05And what was the final 1716 Rockies or something like that?
- 20:08It was the fourth time since the 1800s that a team gave up nine
- 20:13runs in the first inning and came back and won the game.
- 20:18You had that game. Was that the same night that the
- 20:19Yankees blew the lead with the? Yeah, I think it was Trent.
- 20:24I think it was the same night. Speaking of bullpens, Duran with
- 20:29the Phillies so he throws a splinker 4 times.
- 20:33On Saturday or. Friday, Friday night.
- 20:35But leading into him coming out, the Twins apparently sent his
- 20:39full entrance to them. They didn't go to commercial,
- 20:43the Phillies broadcast. Really.
- 20:45And Duran comes in, throw in splinkers.
- 20:49This is like his split finger slash sinker kind of combination
- 20:51pitch. He calls it a splinker.
- 20:53You throw in a 9899. What do I see on Twitter?
- 20:55I thought this guy threw hard. Yeah, well, hey.
- 20:58It's crazy last night. 9899 doesn't isn't considered hard at
- 21:03his work right, right that's he's all right and then.
- 21:07Come talk to me when he hits 100.
- 21:09No, that's his off speed pitch that he's throwing 98.
- 21:12And if you didn't think he threw hard, I hope you record taped
- 21:15the game last night 'cause my God, he was.
- 21:17Unbelievable. He's gonna be beloved.
- 21:19There he might be the difference maker.
- 21:20Oh, absolutely right, 'cause that bullpen was awful.
- 21:23It was. And I like Romano, he's the Jays
- 21:25closer. But he just there's, he's, he's
- 21:27not the same. You put that dude there.
- 21:30Oh my God. With he's just he throws a item
- 21:333. He's fun to watch.
- 21:34Are the Phillies that, I mean, it's the Phillies are the
- 21:37Phillies, Yeah. How many teams can win the World
- 21:39Series? Dodgers.
- 21:41Yeah. Phillies.
- 21:43Padres. Brewers.
- 21:46Yes. Cubs.
- 21:47Yes. I don't think so.
- 21:49No, I don't. Like the Cubs?
- 21:50Don't like the I? Don't think the Cubs can win
- 21:52World Series, not with that rotation.
- 21:54Yeah, you brought up those 3-4 spots.
- 21:57Yeah. It's Kate Horton and three and
- 21:59then Kate Horton's been great and Matthew Boyd is phenomenal
- 22:02and Imanaga, good to see him get.
- 22:04Back. You can come back though, he can
- 22:06be a solid number of. 3 fours. Do you know who's starting to
- 22:08worry me a little bit. And I was, I was shouting from
- 22:11the rooftops. You don't need a closer.
- 22:12You don't need a closer. Palenci is the guy.
- 22:14Look what he's done. His last two starts have not
- 22:17been good. He blew a save yesterday, got
- 22:19bailed out by, of all people, Justin Turner with a pinch hit
- 22:23home run. A steel bar starting to turn
- 22:27back into a pumpkin. A little bit kind is too.
- 22:30Kind is too. Keeler had a bat on the other
- 22:32day. I just, I want to say they can.
- 22:35It's great for business. I don't think they can.
- 22:37So Mets and Phillies, Yes. Brewers.
- 22:40Padres. Dodgers.
- 22:42OK, go to the American League. Middle World Series.
- 22:46Winter World Series Red Sox. I can't I'm.
- 22:49With you Yankees, no. Blue Jays, maybe.
- 22:53I don't think so. The Detroit I don't how many
- 23:00rain. Delays.
- 23:01Are they going to get scoop and pray for rain?
- 23:03That's it. That's just, and Charlie, what
- 23:06was really good last night, Flaherty's Paddock, your guy,
- 23:09you know, but you know Chris Paddock he can't count on.
- 23:12Him. No, he's awful, OK.
- 23:13Are there three teams in the West that can win the World
- 23:16Series? Out of this group I'm I'd feel
- 23:20more confident with the Rangers. I would too.
- 23:23And the Mariners. Yes, and the Astros.
- 23:26And the Astros? Yes, those are the three.
- 23:29Nobody in the East, nobody in the Central.
- 23:30I don't think so. Win a World Series.
- 23:32Win a World Series, I think the Padres can a.
- 23:35Lot more in the National League than the Men I.
- 23:36Think the Padres can, think the Dodgers can, and I think the
- 23:39Mets and the Phillies can. And I got to throw the Brewers
- 23:41in. We'll take a time out.
- 23:42We'll throw out the Bill Seals when we come back.
- 23:44Miller and Con and talk Cyclones on the other side to the Iowa
- 23:46Sports Radio Network. Melody Condon, welcome back just
- 23:54past 130 on a Monday. Iowa Sports Radio Network
- 23:58trends, plays of the day. Circus sports sponsored those
- 24:02those in about, oh, 15 minutes or so.
- 24:04Top of the hour off the bench. Lucas Strain takes you one until
- 24:085. Bill Seals was part of the Matt
- 24:10Campbell press conference today. He was part of the media.
- 24:13He was at the podium. He was listening in for
- 24:15cyclonereport.com, part of 24/7 sports.
- 24:19Bill joins Trent and myself. Hello, Bill Seals, how are you?
- 24:24I'm doing great, Kenny. How about yourself?
- 24:26Doing fine. Appreciate you coming on and
- 24:28recapping what Coach Campbell had to say earlier this morning.
- 24:32So I guess I'll just throw it open to you just to take away or
- 24:35two from what you heard from Coach Campbell before we maybe
- 24:39dive in a little bit in depth. More in depth to what?
- 24:41What did you leave there? Maybe top of mind.
- 24:45Well, I one of the things since we're not given any practice
- 24:48access is to kind of try to get some detail out of him as far as
- 24:53like position battles, guys in camp fighting for those spots,
- 24:57some breakouts. And I did get quite a bit out of
- 25:00him out of one of the questions that I asked.
- 25:03So it was nice to hear you tight end position.
- 25:06It's kind of one of the areas where you're not hearing a whole
- 25:10lot about like any heated camp competition with Berkel and
- 25:15Braver coming back. So it was noteworthy that he
- 25:18brought up Cooper Alexander, who he was a freshman last year, had
- 25:22the red shirt, one of the heralded members of that
- 25:25freshman class. And this was not healthy.
- 25:28And it sounds like he's had an incredible camp and is one
- 25:32that's pushing for playing time. So that just makes that tight
- 25:35end room even deeper. Also wide receiver.
- 25:39We we've talked about it ad nauseam here.
- 25:42It seems like on you guys's show, but Dom Overby was a name
- 25:46brought up again, Brett Eskeldson.
- 25:49Both those guys were freshmen last year.
- 25:52Eskeldson played more on special teams, did not red shirt.
- 25:56Those are two names brought up again.
- 25:58Chase. So well, I don't think he's
- 26:00taken a step back. It sounds like I would expect
- 26:03he's going to be the starting ex receiver stepping into Jaden
- 26:08Higgins's shoes from what we heard today.
- 26:11Also a lot was brought up your River Peppers was the name Matt
- 26:16brought up a lot over the summer LED I think a lot of people to
- 26:20maybe speculate he might take over for Dylan Lee, but sounds
- 26:23like Dylan Lee has responded well.
- 26:26One of those guys having a big camp so encouraging there.
- 26:29I didn't think that white that running backroom probably a
- 26:33legit 4 deep. I think when you look at it
- 26:35right now, that's just scholarship players and you've
- 26:38got Aiden Flora as well. Another name walk on brought up
- 26:42from Matt today. Step over to the defensive side
- 26:45of the ball. Kamari Moore was an interesting
- 26:48name brought up. True freshman, joined the
- 26:51program in January. Obviously Dominic Orange is
- 26:55going to going to get a majority of the snaps there as a mayor
- 26:59Hawk. Another name has been brought up
- 27:01throughout training camp. But Kamari Moore, one of those
- 27:04freshman, it sounds like chomping on a bit a little more
- 27:07on the defensive ends. I think Tomatola McDonough
- 27:11continues to impress throughout training camp.
- 27:14The Yale transfer couldn't join the program until the summer.
- 27:19So he's had a lot of time to to make up miss there since he was
- 27:23finishing up his degree in the Ivy League.
- 27:26But I think he's a guy you look at maybe a day one starter at
- 27:29the Leo position on that defensive end.
- 27:33You know, it's a conversation comes up early in the year every
- 27:36year. It's that offensive line play.
- 27:37Bill, we've been talking long enough.
- 27:38You know how important I feel offensive line play is and, and
- 27:41getting it right, right away because you're open with Kansas
- 27:44State. This is not a team that you can
- 27:46just sit out there and and be tweaking.
- 27:48I know that Campbell talked a little bit about Coach Clinton
- 27:50moving guys around in the spring.
- 27:52Do you feel like they're pretty solid at this point knowing yes,
- 27:55you're going to be doing a little bit of movement trying to
- 27:58find that right combination, but they have a pretty good idea
- 28:00what that offensive line is going to look like?
- 28:03Yeah, Good timing on that question.
- 28:04Actually, Trent, that was a a topic that was brought up today,
- 28:10I think. Yeah, you're correct.
- 28:11A lot of the movement as far as like the flexibility guys
- 28:15playing tackle, guard center, I think a lot of that sorted out
- 28:19over the spring and now you're in the training camp, I think
- 28:23that's getting a little more settled.
- 28:25Matt did talk about the depth. He thinks this is the deepest
- 28:30that they've been offensive line wise.
- 28:32And I think you, you look at the, the snap counts and, and
- 28:35stuff from last season, they've got like 7 guys back that have
- 28:39played a lot of snaps on Saturdays.
- 28:42So you, you've got those seven guys to take into account.
- 28:47And then also a freshman. I would just Kenny had just
- 28:50asked me the question before they Ikakuma, I think I'm
- 28:55pronouncing that correctly. One of the true freshmen out of
- 28:59Utah, Salt Lake City that they brought in.
- 29:02He didn't even join the program until the summer in June.
- 29:06But already as a guy, Matt's talking about maybe impacting
- 29:10that lineup this this season, which is always noteworthy when
- 29:14you're talking about a true freshman offensive lineman at
- 29:17this level of football. But Brendan Black, you look back
- 29:21to him a few years ago, that's the last time.
- 29:24And at that time it was kind of unheard of.
- 29:26So here we are again with Vegas. Yeah, I think he's an interior
- 29:30guy. So somebody to keep in mind when
- 29:34you're, you're talking about the, the left and and right
- 29:37guard positions and, and who might factor in there at at some
- 29:40point? Yeah, Brendan Black, I think
- 29:42he's got the ideal size for a center, but I want to go back to
- 29:45the receiver, to the receiver position because Eskelsen's name
- 29:49comes up a lot and obviously caught Campbell's eye last year
- 29:52because he played as a freshman. Which leads me to a freshman
- 29:56question in Zay Robinson, that there's a lot of guys that are
- 30:00going to be competing for for catches this year.
- 30:03Is Zay Robinson going to be one of them?
- 30:05What do what do you think? His chances of cracking the
- 30:08lineup at least at some point, you know, playing more than four
- 30:12games or would be you'd be surprised if he burns his red
- 30:15shirt. I would be very surprised if he
- 30:18burns his red shirts now. Now saying that, it seems like
- 30:22there's been a position group or two across across the board that
- 30:26has had a rash of injuries in the last three or four years.
- 30:31Last year it was what linebacker, it was tight end,
- 30:36who knows. This year.
- 30:38I think they're pretty good depth wise at wide receiver.
- 30:42They was also a guy that that played basketball and and and
- 30:46went through the spring, didn't join the program until the
- 30:49summer. So he's a little behind.
- 30:52I think even some of those other wide receivers that were able to
- 30:55join the program in January. So I think with him, they just
- 30:58want to get him in the program at this point.
- 31:01Get him. They've got him through the
- 31:03offseason workouts, the nutrition program, get him, make
- 31:07sure he's completely healthy as well.
- 31:09He had a few things over his career at Valley.
- 31:12So I think it's just a good thing for him right now.
- 31:15He's in the program working in with the nutrition staff,
- 31:18strength and conditioning, recovery and I think that's
- 31:21going to be the the on on kind of on his To Do List for this
- 31:26year because I think they're pretty well set at wide
- 31:29receiver, the guys we've talked about a lot.
- 31:31End of the week last week we found out about a contract
- 31:34extension that has been finalized.
- 31:35Now with Matt Campbell. You have a take away or two from
- 31:38that bill. Reading through the always the
- 31:40legalese is always fun sifting through all that.
- 31:43Anything that jumped off to you? Well, I think just it's I think
- 31:47it's a tribute to just how important he put the the
- 31:51importance, I guess he places on his coaches and his players.
- 31:56There's the usual stipulation in there that X amount he wants to
- 32:00take care of his staff. And now in the new Rev share era
- 32:04of college football, 1,000,000 of of his contract being taken
- 32:08and and put into the Rev share pot at Iowa State.
- 32:12And you know, much has been made about about that.
- 32:15Now where you know, where they're coming up with the 20
- 32:17and a half million. I think at least for for this
- 32:20year, where that's coming from. Well, some of it's coming from
- 32:23the head football coach. So he's putting the the coach,
- 32:26the players 1st and and hit him kind of second.
- 32:30Although he's taken what, $5,000,000 a year.
- 32:33He's being taken care of, but I think he wants to take care of
- 32:36his coaches and his players. So those were kind of two of the
- 32:40the big things I took away from that from that story.
- 32:43Yeah, I couldn't agree with you more.
- 32:45I no doubt about it. By the way, Ben Jacobson, not
- 32:48Iowa State related, but Northern Iowa, he just got a contract he
- 32:51sent in this morning. It's a rollover, which means
- 32:54lifetime trend, right? Absolutely.
- 32:56Yeah. Back to Iowa State, you get TJ
- 32:59Speaking of basketball tomorrow for his final press conference
- 33:03of the summer. And if you get a chance to thank
- 33:05him for doing those for all of us who talk about sports and
- 33:08write about sports, certainly very beneficial as we try and
- 33:12kill segments during the summer months.
- 33:14But what do you expect to hear Bill?
- 33:16What do you want to what do you anticipate Coach Otzenberger
- 33:19would say? He meets with you guys for the
- 33:20final time our prior to the fall.
- 33:23Well, I would imagine we'll get some, some kind of Josh
- 33:26Jefferson update. It's probably not going to be an
- 33:28update that he's returned to practice.
- 33:31I think at this point they're they're just aiming to get him
- 33:34back at full go for pre season practice.
- 33:38So it but it will be nice to get an update on him that that Josh
- 33:42is, is getting, getting near that point and they'll be
- 33:46commencing I think for a couple weeks.
- 33:49They'll send the the the guys home and and get a break before
- 33:53fall classes start. So I would imagine, I think
- 33:56we've gotten all the veteran guys so far.
- 33:58That might be maybe a Nate Heisey day tomorrow as well as
- 34:02one of the other freshman might be interesting to talk to like a
- 34:05Killian Turay a little bit the the French guard that has joined
- 34:10the program true freshman. So but yeah, I mean, just to be
- 34:13kind of putting a bow on on summer conditioning out of TJ
- 34:17and you know, maybe what the how they are wrapping things up here
- 34:21in the next week. Maybe what the approach is with
- 34:24the players and as they will soon go on their way for a
- 34:27couple weeks and return to Ames for classes here in a few weeks.
- 34:32Be honest before you know. Indeed it will.
- 34:34Good stuff. Bill Seals, cyclonereport.com,
- 34:37part of On Three. You'll recap all the press
- 34:40conferences and then you get one more late in the week, correct?
- 34:44Yeah, yeah, we will on Thursday. We'll get another round of of
- 34:48two assistant coaches on on on Thursday of this week.
- 34:54So that'll be, let's see, we'll get Jake Landry and Ryan
- 34:58Clinton. So running backs and offensive
- 35:00lineman along with a few players.
- 35:02So as we worked with our way through, we got two more rounds,
- 35:07I think of coaches and then Matt again on Thursday the 14th.
- 35:11Then off to Dublin for the squad.
- 35:13Good stuff Bill, thanks for doing this.
- 35:15We will speak with you next Monday.
- 35:16Bill Seal, cyclereport.com, part of on three media.
- 35:20Bill, thank you. Good to talk to you.
- 35:23This phone crap dog, right? The right.
- 35:24Time for. Us, it's 1:45.
- 35:27We'll take a time out. Trends, plays of the day.
- 35:29They're coming up next. Circus sports, downtown Las
- 35:32Vegas or on your phone on your app if you're listening in
- 35:34Illinois, Circus sports, Illinois and Iowa circus sports,
- 35:37Iowa app, Miller and Condon, Iowa sports Radio network.
- 35:41I'm Miller and Condon. Welcome back.
- 35:42Iowa Sports Radio Network our final segment, Lucas Strain
- 35:47coming up at the top of the hour.
- 35:50Sean, by the way, back on Friday.
- 35:53So Sean returns from maternity leave for that and he'll be back
- 35:59Friday. Well, your plays of the week,
- 36:01you've had a week to kind of recharge Circus sports sponsor
- 36:04those What what are you playing baseball tonight?
- 36:08Yeah, there's no WNBA tonight. Nothing, because I put two games
- 36:12in and then saw that they're not till tomorrow.
- 36:14Nice. So we got 3 for baseball.
- 36:17I'm gonna take what I believe is a free square.
- 36:20You're Blue Jays against the Rockies.
- 36:22Yeah, they're in Colorado. Yeah, in Colorado, Lauer's on
- 36:25the mound. Who's been?
- 36:26I thought. They'd be a free score against
- 36:27the Royals, too, and the Royals won.
- 36:28The Royals and Rockies are different.
- 36:30True. Completely different -200 that's
- 36:33fine. 2 underdogs tonight, including the team I was just
- 36:37talking about and a guy I was just talking about, Nick Ladolo.
- 36:40I'm with you, Trent. I'm, I think the Cincinnati's
- 36:42live tonight. Plus 123 is the number at Circa,
- 36:45by far the best number you can find in the market currently.
- 36:48Plus 123 if you want to jump aboard with the Reds this
- 36:51evening. And then one more.
- 36:53Never bet against the streak. I'm going to bet against the
- 36:56streak. The Marlins are hot.
- 36:58You know, the Astros did not have a good weekend.
- 37:01I will take Jason Alexander of Seinfeld fame and we will take
- 37:06Jason Alexander against Alcantra tonight and get plus money with
- 37:10the Astros. Plus, 117 doesn't feel crazy.
- 37:13It it does because Miami's playing exceptionally well,
- 37:15right? I mean, they swept the Yankees,
- 37:17the Yankees about a month ago. I think we came up with a price.
- 37:22Yankees, yes, no, make the playoffs.
- 37:24And I tried to sell you one that won't make the playoffs.
- 37:27And at the time it was 5 to 1. A week later we talked about
- 37:29again, it was up to like plus 625 and I didn't pull the.
- 37:33Truck did you? No.
- 37:34I did not. You didn't either.
- 37:35Not I did not. I'm not sure they're going to
- 37:38get in, Trent. I the way Boston's playing, I
- 37:40think Toronto's going to get get one of those spots.
- 37:43The Rangers have a push in them. They.
- 37:44Do and Seattle's already there, and the Astros aren't going out.
- 37:47And no one's catching Detroit, obviously.
- 37:50But there's only one playoff team coming out of that
