Latest / Wpfavs - Your favourite WordPress news / Ghost Plugins and the Rise of Terminal Agents
Transcript
- 0:13So, Chris Morris published this massive study on WP Goldmine recently,
- 0:17auditing 57,383 plugins in the official directory.
- 0:22And, uh, the numbers are kind of wild.
- 0:24It turns out 24% of plugins in the 10K to 100K active install band haven't been
- 0:30updated in over two years.
- 0:31Wait, a full quarter of them?
- 0:33Almost one in four?
- 0:34Yeah, literally 1,209 popular plugins that have real, active user bases,
- 0:39sitting there with absolutely no maintainer.
- 0:42That is, um, I mean, that is a huge chunk of the web just running on complete
- 0:46autopilot.
- 0:47But wait, why aren't people replacing them?
- 0:49If a plugin hasn't been touched since 2024, why haven't site owners swapped it out?
- 0:55Because they just work!
- 0:57Look at the top ones on that abandoned list.
- 0:59You have things like Limit Login Attempts, Layout Grid Block,
- 1:03WP Downgrade.
- 1:05They do one tiny job.
- 1:07They don't break, they don't change their interface, and honestly,
- 1:11users love that zero UI churn.
- 1:13Right.
- 1:13They don't want a tool that redesigns its dashboard every six months or pushes,
- 1:17uh, upgraded pro popups into the admin bar every time you log in.
- 1:21it, it, it is the exact reason I ended up building wpfavs in the first place.
- 1:26You know, you try to build a clean stack for a client site,
- 1:29and you just want a simple micro utility to handle one basic task.
- 1:34But if you try to buy or install a modern active alternative today,
- 1:37it comes bundled with banner ads, upsell notices, heavy tracking,
- 1:42and three new top level admin menus you never asked for.
- 1:45Mm, totally.
- 1:47So site builders actively prefer a ghost plugin from 2022 that does two hundred
- 1:51lines of clean PHP over a brand new commercial plugin that treats your admin
- 1:56dashboard like a billboard.
- 1:57Exactly.
- 1:58But the risk, of course, is that eventually PHP versions tick up,
- 2:02or security vulnerabilities surface, and suddenly that forgotten utility becomes a
- 2:07liability.
- 2:08Well, that is where things get really interesting with what is launching right now
- 2:11in 2026.
- 2:12We are seeing this huge shift away from those big bloated admin plugins,
- 2:16toward tools that interface directly with native core APIs.
- 2:20Take something like Novamira CLI, or Benjamin Intal's new Ahentic AI workspace
- 2:25experiment.
- 2:26Wait, Ahentic?
- 2:27How does that one work again?
- 2:28So Ahentic connects directly to your site using native WordPress APIs.
- 2:33No external SaaS middleware, no heavy cloud servers, no complex custom MCP layer.
- 2:39It sits there, reads the site structure, helps you launch pages,
- 2:44and installs plugins through standard interfaces.
- 2:47Huh.
- 2:48And Novamira CLI lets you run terminal coding agents, right?
- 2:52Like Claude Code or Codex CLI or Gemini CLI, straight from your terminal into the
- 2:56site.
- 2:57Yes!
- 2:58You are running shell commands, querying the database, executing PHP,
- 3:03doing file operations, all driven by a local terminal agent.
- 3:07And think about what that does to traditional plugins.
- 3:10If an agent can execute maintenance, optimize tables, or rewrite options directly
- 3:16through core APIs, why do you need a massive heavy settings page inside wp admin at
- 3:22all?
- 3:22You don't!
- 3:23The whole UI layer becomes redundant.
- 3:26The terminal agent becomes your dashboard.
- 3:28Right, it is a fundamental threat to the classic plugin model.
- 3:31Software creators used to think they needed huge feature sets and elaborate
- 3:35dashboards to justify a subscription.
- 3:37But in this new environment, the winning products are going to be lightweight,
- 3:40audit ready micro utilities.
- 3:42Yeah, tools built to be monitored by automated scanners like Plugin Auditor,
- 3:46where the code is clean, transparent, and completely unobtrusive.
- 3:50You know, give me fifty lines of well structured PHP over a bloated plugin ecosystem
- 3:55any day of the week.
- 3:56It turns out the future of WordPress software looks a lot less like a giant software
- 4:01suite, and a lot more like simple, silent tools that just get out of the way.
