- 0:24All right, everybody, you're listening to Table Talk here at the Philadelphia Sports
- 0:27Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports podcast show in the world.
- 0:31That's right. We are celebrating and commemorating ten years here in April of
- 0:35doing the PST podcast show. Have some great things coming your way, and
- 0:39specifically some great things on this Table Talk interview show this week. We've got
- 0:44a great discussion coming your way. Because baseball season is here. We are
- 0:49keeping tabs on what is happening in the Phillies single A, double, A,
- 0:53triple A farm system, and we've got a great discussion again coming your
- 0:58way here. Let's just get right to it. It's great to have back
- 1:02on the podcast. We usually talk to him once or twice a year.
- 1:04Coming to us from the offices of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. We've got
- 1:08the general manager with us, mister Kurt Landis Kurt Man. Thanks so much
- 1:12for jumping on the podcast here. It's great to talk to you, my
- 1:15friend, Jeff, Thanks for having me. I appreciate it. How are
- 1:19you. I am doing okay. I'm specifically doing okay because baseball season's back.
- 1:23Baseball season is here. I love the fact that I am able to
- 1:26drive here in the Lehigh Valley, just about fifteen minutes down the road,
- 1:30and I'm able to get to Coca Cola Park with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs
- 1:34play. I can see some fun baseball. I can be there with my
- 1:38family and just have a great time. And I gotta say, Kurt,
- 1:41I was at opening night for the Iron Pigs, you know, that home
- 1:45opener, and you know, I was thinking how glad I was to be
- 1:48there. I was. I was being very reflective actually, the fact that
- 1:51I'm able to watch triple A ball being played, because quite frankly, there
- 1:55was some ambiguity as to whether or not we'd actually have Triple A baseball here
- 2:00in the Lehigh Valley due to some of the how can I say, funding
- 2:02issues and political shenanigans that we're going on behind the scenes. And I'll say
- 2:07this, I'll say this to folks who may not know and understand this issue
- 2:14too too much. Public private partnerships that the Lehigh Valley IronPigs have with other
- 2:17organizations other entities in the Lehigh Valley, it's it's been so good for this
- 2:23Lehigh Valley community. And I do think public private partnerships can be really good
- 2:27for communities, and I think the public private partnership that the Leah Valley Ironpicks
- 2:30have just with the community here in the Lehigh Valley as a whole has been
- 2:34so solid for so many years. So I just wanted to put that out
- 2:38there. Look, the IronPigs signed a lease that keeps the ball club in
- 2:40the Lehigh Valley until I believe it's twenty fifty two, if I'm not mistaken,
- 2:46And maybe you can talk a little bit about that as well, Kurt,
- 2:49But I'm wondering if you can kind of take us through the entire process
- 2:52of this past year that happened, that ambiguity as to whether or not the
- 2:54Iron Pigs We're still going to be here in the Lehigh Valley again due to
- 2:58some political shenanigs and things that were, you know, needing to be done
- 3:02from the Iron Pigs standpoint, and also things that were needed to be done
- 3:06from the public standpoint as well. I just wanted to get your thoughts on,
- 3:08like how concerned you were about the Iron Picks possibly having to shut their
- 3:12doors here in the Lehigh Lehigh Valley and kind of how things got resolved.
- 3:16Well, it's been a unique year. Yeah, at least, but as
- 3:21you mentioned, you know, we're committed to Lehigh Valley. The least has
- 3:24been signed or extended from twenty forty five to twenty fifty two. About the
- 3:31Iron Pick, the Iron Picks, the organization, the franchise, its never
- 3:36ever wanted to leave the Lehigh Valley. We were very blessed to have the
- 3:39support that we have over the last two years. Actually, Major League Baseball
- 3:46essentially took over My League Baseball operations, and when they did that, they
- 3:51immediately contracted forty two teams from Mile League Baseball right off the bat, and
- 3:57that happened in January of twenty twenty one, and the remaining one hundred and
- 4:00twenty teams in mir League Baseball, including ourselves, signed required to sign a
- 4:06license agreement from Major League Baseball, and within that agreement, you were required
- 4:12to hit certain parameters in terms of ability facility improvements by April first of twenty
- 4:19twenty three. And without that, MLB wasn't saying, hey, you're you're
- 4:24going to be gone, You're going to be contracted, but they've certainly leveraged
- 4:30that and reminded the one hundred and twenty teams that were of you know,
- 4:35contract to Majorague Baseball that you put yourself at risk by not doing so.
- 4:40It was very important to them to have upgraded facilities, and they were wrong.
- 4:46They were like get it done. They're like, you got to get
- 4:46this done. It needs to happen. Yeah, you know, it was
- 4:50unfortunate timing because January of twenty one, we're coming off of twenty twenty,
- 4:56when all of Mir League Baseball hadn't played a game in two years since twenty
- 5:02nineteen. So a lot of franchises across the country just weren't in a financial
- 5:08position to even help. Now, that wasn't the case here, although we
- 5:12lost all of twenty twenty, and it wasn't a great situation for anyone to
- 5:15lose an entire year's worth of income. But we maintained all of our full
- 5:20time employees because we felt we owed it to them. They've been here and
- 5:26our employees are really the heart of what we do and why we're successful.
- 5:30But we kept our employees and we started looking for assistance. In the end,
- 5:36I know that Lee High County support us with four and a half million.
- 5:41The state was able to provide us with two and a half million dollars
- 5:44of funds Northampton County, even though the ballpark's in Lee High County. Northampton
- 5:47County recognized the regional nature of the Iron Pigs support us with two hundred thousand
- 5:56dollars, and even the business community, the Chamber of Commerce, as a
- 6:00show of great faith in understanding what we do in the Business Committee provided one
- 6:03hundred thousand dollars, So that left us at seven point three million dollars.
- 6:09The project cost end up being over ten million dollars for the base of project
- 6:14cost, So the Iron Pigs probably have contributed and we're still getting the file
- 6:17numbers as a construction just end up. So Iron Pigs probably not contribute somewhere
- 6:20between three and three and a half million dollars ourselves. And we never ever
- 6:26wanted to leave and never ever wanted to press holes in the position, but
- 6:30we did need and received some public help to be able to make the improvements
- 6:35that Major League Baseball required of us. Absolutely, yeah, And it was
- 6:40Major League Baseball that said you really need to get this done. And like
- 6:43you said, it wasn't where you, it wasn't where the IronPigs wanted to
- 6:46leave by any stretch. Of the imagination. And of course you know that
- 6:48people go down rabbit holes and say, okay, what happens if they're not
- 6:51here, and then conversations can get a little bit ugly. But at the
- 6:55end of the day, it was a community that rallied around each other and
- 7:00around the Pigs to say, lest look, you know, they are such
- 7:01an important and integral part of our Lehigh Valley community. We need to make
- 7:06sure that this happens. And it was really really great to see. And
- 7:10uh, you know, I'm grateful as somebody who loves going to the to
- 7:15the games, and loves being at the park, love taking my family there.
- 7:18You know, I'm just grateful that, you know, we had your
- 7:20leadership and their other leaders in the Lehigh Valley as well, that we're really
- 7:24able to get this done. But moving along here, Kurt as well,
- 7:27you know, I look at the Iron Pigs, and specifically from a baseball
- 7:31perspective, over the years, the talent in the Phillies farm system that has
- 7:36been a bit depleted. I'm sure you've heard some you know, talk here
- 7:40and there about the Phillies farm system being a little bit depleted over the years,
- 7:44but it's never ceased to amaze me how many folks are attending games and
- 7:48they head to Coca Cola Park with their family. Again, I do that
- 7:51with my family. It's such a testament to what the Iron Pigs actually mean
- 7:57to family and the community at large. So as the Phillies farm system has
- 8:01some talent that's you know, coming up through the ranks here, we're seeing
- 8:05some We're gonna be seeing some really good talent. I think in Lehigh Valley
- 8:07this year, is there an expectation that you're going to see even more Phillies
- 8:11and IronPigs fans really heading to the park this season to check out this talent
- 8:16and to see what the Phillies farm system has to offer. Well, you
- 8:20know, I certainly think that when there's talented players here, or when the
- 8:24Phillies are playing well and in the nationallygue Championship, there's a more baseball fervor
- 8:31as it were, and we're excited about baseball more and we benefit by that.
- 8:35But it's hard to really know and understand. You know, if wins
- 8:39and losses, I don't think they have a significant impact on our attendance.
- 8:45It helps if you're a really good team, and certainly will hurt if you
- 8:48have a really poor team. But I large, we've always estimated that we
- 8:52feel like eighty five percent of our fans are here for what you just talked
- 8:58about, Jeff. It's a family night out, it's a fun thing to
- 9:01do. They enjoy the fireworks, the game promotion. Certainly there are people
- 9:05that enjoy the game of baseball, or they might not set themselves die hearts
- 9:09right right and focused every minute on the action of play, like maybe that
- 9:13ten or fifteen percent our fans do. So, you know, you try
- 9:18to have something for everybody, and you know, for us, different theme
- 9:22nights, you know, we have different group boutings, different ways to try
- 9:26to be able to connect with the entire community that are genuine and everyone has
- 9:33a night or more, and we work very hard to fill the ballpark.
- 9:35We're there's thirty Triple A teams in the country and now those thirty, you
- 9:41know, there's twenty seven of them that are larger markets than le High Valley.
- 9:46But last year we finished second in both average and overall attendance. And
- 9:50it's just because there's so much love for I think our brand, I think
- 9:56the ballpark. You know, we talked about the improvements and there a lot
- 9:58of people why do they need improvements? And it really wasn't about the stadium
- 10:03in terms of the fan amenities. It was about the player amenities, the
- 10:07clubhouses, you know, to be able to handle the newer analytical, additional
- 10:16coaching staffs, the size of the rosters, things have changed significantly in fifteen
- 10:22years, and nutrition and health and wellness and training. So I'll say right
- 10:30now, you know, with what we've done behind the scenes for the photolph
- 10:33affiliates and the players and farm development and what we've always had in terms of
- 10:39the actual playing surface and the fan amenities, there's really no greater ballpark in
- 10:45Triple A Baseball right now, and we're very proud of that, and I
- 10:48think that goes to us out punching our weight coming here compared to other markets.
- 10:56It's something very special. I know you thought it an opening night.
- 10:58When you're here, it's very community driven and you have a sense of a
- 11:03huge sense of pride and the electric that was in the ballpark that night on
- 11:07a warm, open night, it makes you feel again very very proud to
- 11:13be something special. Absolutely absolutely well. I mean you have been the general
- 11:18manager now of the Iron Pigs. I think since two thousand and seven.
- 11:22If I'm not mistaken, Am I correct from that? Yeah? Technically I
- 11:26came here in the fall of two thousand and six. Oh first thing I
- 11:28did the first week of October was re announced the name of the team contest
- 11:33in the fall of two thousand and six. Yep, okay, very ed.
- 11:35So I'm there's kind of a two part question for you here because over
- 11:39all of these years of you and the Iron Pigs being so integral to the
- 11:43to the Lehigh Valley community. Here, there's challenges. There's great times also,
- 11:50So I want I want to get from you if possible. You know,
- 11:54what what what What's been one of the most challenging aspects of being a
- 11:58GM and all the all the years that you have been in here, Kurt,
- 12:00Like, what's been that most challenging aspect of being the general manager for
- 12:03this team? You know, there's a lot of things. We've had different
- 12:09construction projects and I'm just so focused on the fan experience and you want things
- 12:16to be perfect, and I allow myself to get caught up and make sure
- 12:18things are done on time, and that that provides for some stress and you
- 12:24want things to be Praying for the fans and the players and even our employees.
- 12:28You know, it's difficult, I think behind the scenes, you know,
- 12:31I have a lot of different constituencies that I report to, almost like
- 12:35a politician, So you no, I have to, you know, act
- 12:41on behalf of our fans. I act on behalf of our game day employees
- 12:45and what they want, or our full time employees, or our ownership or
- 12:48the Philadelphia Phillies or Major League Baseball or the players on our team and their
- 12:54clients are sponsors, season ticket holders, and sometimes that those different groups of
- 12:58people don't see eye to eye, right, job bridge those gaps, you
- 13:03know, if the owners want something, the fans don't, our employees want
- 13:07something, but our marketing partners don't do. They prefer something done in different
- 13:11ways. So I guess I'm always trying to bridge those relationships to negotiate and
- 13:16do what's best for the team in the long term, right from thirty thousand
- 13:20feet. So I think those are the biggest that's like frustrations, but I
- 13:24think things challenge, yeah, yeah, challenge yeah, all right. Well,
- 13:28on the opposite side of that coin, then, what's been the most
- 13:31joyous aspect of being the Iron Picture general manager? In all the years that
- 13:35you've been there. Well, I think it's just the relationships you make in
- 13:39the community that are very unique and special at this place. You know,
- 13:43as Iron Pigs, redraw fans not consumers. So the relationships that our consumers
- 13:50have are fanatical. They have a very unique tie to your product, and
- 13:56that leads to a lot of people giving feedback and a lot further and a
- 14:01lot of the energy behind the decisions that you make, and there's a lot
- 14:03of responsibility, but there's a lot of joy in that as well that you
- 14:07oversee a community landmark and that people appreciate and take very seriously and want to
- 14:16be a part of. So, you know, there's a lot of the
- 14:18specifics. For me, I enjoy just creating memories for people and and not
- 14:24necessarily means myself, but the ballpark, you know, for someone that will
- 14:28say to me, hey, you know, my my grandmother used to be
- 14:31shut in. She didn't really want to go anywhere or do anything. Now
- 14:35she loves coming out to the ball games. It's given her a reason to
- 14:37live or you know, kids on the field to get an autograph, or
- 14:43to celebrate someone's anniversary or birthday, and you try to make it special for
- 14:48them and only a way that the ballpark can with a unique experience or surprise.
- 14:52And you know, that's that's what's really day to day joined as the
- 14:56interaction that I have, the relationships with the fans that we do. I
- 15:00think one of the one of the best moments for my family, quite frankly,
- 15:03and it's something that you all do consistently throughout the season, is when
- 15:09you allow the kids to run the bases after the game. My identical twin
- 15:11daughters, when they ran the basses after one of the games that we were
- 15:15at a few years ago, it was so special to them. To this
- 15:16day, they still remember that. So it's those quote little things that really
- 15:22do create a big difference for a lot of the fans for sure. And
- 15:26moving along here, Kurt, you know, you know we're gonna end up,
- 15:30you know, I want to kind of get into some some baseball in
- 15:31terms of what it means to the organization as well, because we're gonna end
- 15:37up seeing Bryce Harper in Lehigh Valley at some point. You know, one
- 15:41of the biggest names in baseball, the biggest name for the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 15:45He's gonna be in Lei Valley and likely going to be doing a rehab assignment
- 15:48before heading to the Big ball club in Philadelphia to play there after you know
- 15:54his injury is, you know, after he's good to go. So I
- 15:56saw him last season when he was doing his rehab stint in Lehigh Valley and
- 16:02Coca Cola Park was just electric with the fans. You know, I'm wondering,
- 16:06what is it going to mean having Bryce Harper come through Lehigh Valley again
- 16:11and possibly doing it sooner rather than later based on some reports we're seeing so
- 16:15inevitably, What does a talent like that mean when they're going to be doing
- 16:21some rehab assignment there at the ballpark. Sure, you know, he's a
- 16:25generational talent. We have a lot of talented players come here often. You
- 16:30have a group players now that you know make the play ninety eight times out
- 16:34of one hundred instead of ninety nine times an I of one hundred. But
- 16:37you know, when there's a there's a superstar. I mean, he's a
- 16:40genuine superstar um, just like a huge singer or act or rock and roll
- 16:48band, and that just drives people to want to be a part of it,
- 16:52to want to say they saw him when they saw him at the ballpark.
- 16:56Uh, you know, we'd love to have him. Um, there's
- 17:00a lot of rumors. It seems like there's a lot of people that feel
- 17:03that we're going to have him. So I'm hopeful to continue the I hope
- 17:07so I want to come to the ballpark and see him. You know,
- 17:10for us, depending on when he comes, we do well every night.
- 17:15Like I said, we're generally speaking in the top five in a country attendance
- 17:18every year. But when he's here, it just helps him find additional memory.
- 17:22And when he came last year, we talked about our staff. It's
- 17:26just time to make sure we always play best foot forward. So people see
- 17:29that they're coming from Philadelphia, they're coming from two hours away to see Bryce
- 17:33Harper in a very intimate atmosphere. It would drove tourism, not just local
- 17:37individuals that want to see him, and it's just want to make sure that
- 17:41he's here. People see what the Iron Pigs are about in addition to to
- 17:45Bryce Harper. But I'll say, you know, he we used watched him
- 17:49play in the NLCS in the World Series. You kind of feel like he's
- 17:53a bit of a man among men or anytime he takes the play, there's
- 17:56a chance that piece of some type of magic will happen. And that was
- 18:02the case both as rehab here and then in the playoffs. Just an incredible
- 18:07individual has the ability to raise to the occasion. Absolutely. Absolutely, Again,
- 18:11folks were talking to Kurt Landisk, general manager of the Lehigh Valley Iron
- 18:15Pigs, and as we're kind of, you know, closing outer discussion here,
- 18:21I'm wondering if there are any big plans for the Iron Pigs that you
- 18:23that you might be able to share with us this season and even in the
- 18:27years to come, Like kind of any teasers that you want to throw out
- 18:30there, because I'm going to ask you about any big events this season and
- 18:33big promotions in a little bit, But is there anything that maybe you can
- 18:37share about, you know, where the Iron Pigs really want to go in
- 18:41terms of really continuing to make their mark in the community. You know,
- 18:45I think the seventy five games that we host, it's always about making each
- 18:49one better and having a theme for each night. We kind of look at
- 18:52it like planning seventy five different weddings and you try to have the ten thousand
- 18:56weddings. It's the Valley's largest rush. You know, we feed ten thousand
- 19:02people in two and a half hours, and we hope to do that very
- 19:03successfully with hot fresh food. But you know, I think long term and
- 19:08who we want to be. I think we want to continue to be a
- 19:11stalwart in the community and give back. We've had such success. You know,
- 19:15we mentioned off air some of the things we do charitable and really High
- 19:18Valley and we've now between the Iron Pigs and our Iron Pigs Charities Foundation,
- 19:23we've given out more than two point seven million dollars in cash grants back to
- 19:29the local community, which is something we're very proud of. And I think
- 19:32we want to continue to do that, not lying grants, but I think
- 19:36we want to try to look over the next year and say, all right,
- 19:37where can we make an even bigger impact, a sizeable impact with the
- 19:42dollars that we raise for our charitable efforts here in addition to giving cash grants
- 19:48of two thousand and five thousand, ten thousand, what are we what's a
- 19:52need in the community that can we can spend you know, one hundred thousand,
- 19:56two hundred, maybe a million dollars on And those are things we have
- 19:59to to look at and consider beyond that. You know, we just as
- 20:03we talked about, we spent a lot of money on the player amenities and
- 20:07making sure those are first class. I think, you know, next year
- 20:11and into the future because of COVID, I think we really haven't had a
- 20:15huge investment. We do things all the time to make sure the facility is
- 20:18maintained and clean and unique and kind of stands up to our name. But
- 20:22you know, it makes this too, in the next year or two,
- 20:26be able to reinvest back in the primary fan amenities that really get fans excited
- 20:33to the ballpark. So I don't want to tip my hat there specifically,
- 20:36but you know, that was a big project coming off COVID to complete of
- 20:41you know, well over ten million dollars project, and now you know,
- 20:45we to be able to kind of put that money or put different moneies back
- 20:49into the ballpark that support the fans that come out year after year and night
- 20:55after night. I think that's the long term focus for us now as project
- 21:00is in our rear mirror. Yeah, I think I think you know,
- 21:03I like I like that you said that because my kids always used to love
- 21:06playing on the playground area, you know, past like left field area.
- 21:08They always enjoy that. They're twelve years old now getting a little old for
- 21:12that. So yeah, let's uh yeah, I think an upgrade maybe out
- 21:17there would be fantastic, just just for my daughters, just for my daughter's
- 21:21Kurt, So, what does twelve What does the twelve year old daughter want
- 21:23at a ballpark? Oh my gosh, you know what? They like doing
- 21:26their nails, maybe having a nail salon out there. I don't know,
- 21:30it's been it's been interesting, to say the least, the preteen years,
- 21:33Kurt, the preteen years. But uh, but yeah, we love going
- 21:37to the park. So and because of some of the big events and the
- 21:41big promotions that you have talked about, my family loves going there. So
- 21:45is there anything you can tell us about some of these big promotions that you
- 21:48are going to be doing. What we're going to be seeing at Colcoa Cole
- 21:51Park this season? Well, you know, our promotional schedule is out and
- 21:55there's some great ones on the promo promo schedule. Um, the best ones,
- 22:00in my mind are the ones that we haven't announced yet. We take
- 22:03probably one a month and we create maybe what I call mini campaigns, and
- 22:10we'll be doing an announcement next week relative to our Salute to Philly Knight,
- 22:15which is always a new logo, a new look, kind of raise the
- 22:21stakes as it used to be with our Steake logo. But there are some
- 22:25things as well. With our salute to Lehigh Valley Knight. You know,
- 22:26we kind of change our identity, We kind of pay tribute to someone or
- 22:32someplace in the Lehigh Valley. Those are really fun to get behind. This
- 22:36year, what we'll be doing is we're kicking off the first of at least
- 22:41a three part series celebrating a salute to the I should say, to our
- 22:47city series with our uniforms. So this year we'll have Allentown be our initial
- 22:52city series uniform and salute, and then in twenty four of Bethlehem and then
- 22:56twenty five East and so to actually have, even though we're very regional,
- 23:00it's Lehigh Valley on one specific night each of the next three years to be
- 23:06Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton to kind of pay tribute to those three main parts
- 23:11of the lee High Valley. So excited to kind of, you know,
- 23:12Jeff, in your mind, if you to think back about Allentown and a
- 23:15history and what's unique or different or fun for Allentown. You know what would
- 23:22you do? You know, what do you think the announcement would be?
- 23:23Oh, my gosh, if it was with regard to Allentown in general,
- 23:27I mean, is there Allenthown will be the years announcement and then and then
- 23:33Bethlehem and Easton in the future. I mean, so with regard to Allentown,
- 23:37I'm wondering, just because there's a song that he did, like Billy
- 23:40Joel, I'm wondering if it has anything to do with Billy Joel perhaps,
- 23:42and you know his song, his song Allentown, I don't. I don't
- 23:45know, Am I right? Or Oh, you're gonna have to wait to
- 23:48find out. All right, we're gonna have to wait in the tens of
- 23:52thousands of subscribers. But yeah, and folks, By the way, Kurt
- 23:56and I did not talk about this prior to hitting the record button, so
- 23:59I just threw that out there to me, we did not do that prior.
- 24:02But again, Kurt, it was great to have you on the podcast.

- 25:04awards that may be sitting on the floor that you need to hang up rightfully.
- 25:10So you've done a fantastic job. Get those awards up on the wall
- 25:12that are down down on the floor. Folks. Kurt lands Leigh Valley IronPigs.
- 25:18Kurt, join us down the road, my friend. I'd love to
- 25:18have you back on the podcast. Thanks so much, Jeff appreciate you.
- 25:22It very much was an honor talking to Kurt. I absolutely love the Iron
- 25:26Pigs, love the organization. I do live here in the Lehigh Valley.
- 25:30I live in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. And what the Iron Pigs have meant to
- 25:33our community and to our region for so many years, it cannot be understated
- 25:40their partnerships with so many various just entities, nonprofits, other community organizations,
- 25:47that they are such a solid foundation of what this Lehigh Valley area is and
- 25:52in a sense sort of an identity as well of what this Lehigh Valley really
- 25:56is. So again, I so very much appreciate Kurt coming on the podcast
- 26:00talking about what's been going on at the park and just you know, how
- 26:04how the Iron Pigs have grown over all these years. Ultimately, that's what
- 26:08I got from our conversation. So that being said, thanks so much to
