- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. I was going to say it's Easter
- 0:15Sunday, but it's not. It's Easter Monday, but it feels
- 0:18just as glorious as Easter Sunday.
- 0:21Christ is risen. He's risen indeed.
- 0:24One more time. Now you know the response.
- 0:26Christ is risen, friends. He is risen indeed.
- 0:33And this morning, this afternoon, or whenever you're
- 0:35listening, we get to read all about that as we read the
- 0:39glorious follow up to the terrible tragedy of Good Friday,
- 0:45which was a necessary step on the road to the glory of
- 0:49resurrection. So without any further ado,
- 0:51friends, let us read this glorious story.
- 0:54Let us hear about the resurrection of our Lord as
- 0:58history all comes together to culminate in the high point of
- 1:03the history of our world and our universe as the Son of God
- 1:09himself crucified, dead and back to life as we read together John
- 1:15chapter 20. Early on Sunday morning, while
- 1:27it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and
- 1:31found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance.
- 1:34She ran and found Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one
- 1:38whom Jesus loved. She said.
- 1:40They have taken the Lord's body out of the tomb and we don't
- 1:44know where they have put him. Peter and the other disciples
- 1:49started out for the tomb. They were both running, but the
- 1:52other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first.
- 1:56He stooped and looked in and saw the linen wrappings lying there,
- 2:01but he didn't go in. Then Simon Peter arrived and
- 2:04went inside. He also noticed the linen
- 2:07wrappings lying there, while the cloth that had covered Jesus
- 2:10head was folded up and lying apart from the other wrappings.
- 2:15Then the disciple who had reached the tomb first also went
- 2:18in and he saw and believed, for until then they still hadn't
- 2:24understood the scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the
- 2:28dead. Then they went home.
- 2:31Mary was standing outside the tomb crying and as she wept she
- 2:36stooped and looked in. She saw 2 white robed angels,
- 2:42one sitting at the head and the other at the foot of the place
- 2:46where the body of Jesus had been lying.
- 2:48Dear woman, why are you crying? The angels asked her.
- 2:53Because they have taken away my Lord, she replied.
- 2:57And I don't know where they have put him.
- 3:00She turned to leave and saw someone standing there.
- 3:05It was Jesus, but she didn't recognise him.
- 3:08Dear woman, why are you crying? Jesus asked her, Who are you
- 3:14looking for? She thought he was the gardener,
- 3:17Sir, She said, if you have taken him away, tell me where you were
- 3:22put him and I will go and get him, Mary, Jesus said.
- 3:29She turned to him and cried out, Rabboni, which is Hebrew for
- 3:34teacher, don't cling to me, Jesus said, for I haven't yet
- 3:39ascended to the Father, but go find my brothers and tell them I
- 3:45am ascending to my Father, and your father to my God and your
- 3:50God. Mary Magdalene found the
- 3:54disciples and told them I have seen the Lord, and she gave them
- 3:59his message. That Sunday evening the
- 4:04disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were
- 4:07afraid of the Jewish leaders. Suddenly Jesus was standing
- 4:12there among them. Peace be with you, he said.
- 4:16As he spoke, he showed them the wounds in his hands and his
- 4:20side. They were filled with joy.
- 4:22When they saw the Lord again. He said, Peace be with you.
- 4:28As the Father has sent me, so I am sending you.
- 4:33Then he breathed on them and said, Receive the Holy Spirit.
- 4:38If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven.
- 4:43If you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.
- 4:47One of the 12 disciples Thomas nicknamed the Twin, was not with
- 4:51the others when Jesus came. They told him we have seen the
- 4:55Lord. But he replied, I won't believe
- 4:58it unless I see the nail wounds in his hands, put my fingers
- 5:03into them, and place my hand into the wound in his side.
- 5:08Eight days later the disciples were together again, and this
- 5:12time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked, but
- 5:15suddenly, as before, Jesus was standing among them.
- 5:20Peace be with you, he said. Then he said to Thomas, Put your
- 5:24finger here and look at my hands.
- 5:28Put your hand into the wound in my sight.
- 5:31Don't be faithless any longer. Believe, my Lord and my God,
- 5:38Thomas exclaimed. Then Jesus told him, You believe
- 5:43because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe
- 5:46without seeing me. The disciples saw Jesus do many
- 5:52other miraculous signs in addition to the ones recorded in
- 5:55this book, but these are written so that you may continue to
- 5:59believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and
- 6:05that by believing in Him you will have life by the power of
- 6:10his name. Oh Jesus, here we are, your
- 6:24disciples, and we believe. We believe that you have risen
- 6:29from the dead. We believe that God has raised
- 6:33you, that you are victorious over death, and that you are
- 6:39unstoppable. You are the glorious Lord of the
- 6:44universe. And you have done this so that
- 6:48we can know that you have forged a way for us to be with you and
- 6:53with the Father together with the Spirit, forever in your
- 6:57presence because you love us. And we are just blown away by
- 7:03this incredible, incredible story.
- 7:07Ah, Jesus, thank you for Easter. Thank you for what you have
- 7:10achieved, and thank you for your heart of love for us.
- 7:16We are so grateful for you and all that you've done.
- 7:19And we will worship and glorify your holy name.
- 7:25And we pray all of this in your name, Jesus, Amen.
