Latest / Rusty's Garage / Fabian Coulthard (Part 2)
Transcript
- 0:02A listener production.
- 0:20G'day, it's Rusty here, all set for part two of my podcast with Fabian Coulthard.
- 0:24The supercars driver is kindly going to take some of your questions here, so thank you to those who got in touch.
- 0:31That's coming up a little bit later.
- 0:32Now, if you haven't already heard part one, jump back to the garage library and give it a run.
- 0:38From the early years in a cart in a car park...
- 0:42to winning the Alan Jones Trophy at Albert Park and heading overseas to be teammate to Lewis Hamilton and his first taste of supercars thanks to Larry Perkins.
- 0:53We begin part two with a significant chapter that helped shape him as a driver in many ways with Kim and Brad Jones in Albury.
- 1:03Brad and Kim were always there and available, you know, when you needed to speak to them about anything.
- 1:09And they really set my career up.
- 1:12You know, it got to a point where, you know, we car of the future came along.
- 1:16That was, you know, the big turning point for my career and what, you know, eventually, you know, got me to drive, you know, icons of motorsport being Roger Penske.
- 1:26So I enjoyed my time at Brad's and, you know, I was very fortunate for, you know, everything he could teach me.
- 1:33but also the equipment that he gave me to drive, to race.
- 1:37It was always prepared perfectly.
- 1:39And the people, mate, too, isn't it?
- 1:40They were.
- 1:41And obviously being where the team's based, on the New South Wales-Victorian border, you don't go to Albury just to go to Albury.
- 1:52One good thing about that team was, because it was so far from anywhere else, if you could recruit someone, they would stay.
- 1:59There was no one else that could just poach them.
- 2:02everyone out there either in Brisbane or they're in Melbourne, you know?
- 2:04So I had a great relationship with Phil Keed, my engineer, you know, we butted heads a little bit at times, you know, just because we both wanted to perform, but Brad was a really good mediator.
- 2:14You know, he was the person that could say, look, Fabian, you need to pull your head in.
- 2:18And, you know, I respect Brad for, for saying that at times.
- 2:22And I probably didn't want to hear it, but I needed to be told it.
- 2:25He sculpted me into the person, um, that I was in that time at Brad Jones.
- 2:31And,
- 2:31You know, at times I would fly off the handle, you know, because I knew I could be better and I wasn't able to, for whatever reason, I don't know what it was at the time, but I just couldn't be where I wanted to be at that point.
- 2:42And, you know, Brad was that person that was like, yeah, it'll happen, you know.
- 2:46Just don't put too much pressure on yourself.
- 2:48And, yeah, that's something I'll never forget.
- 2:51So what did that win mean when you finally were able to do it?
- 2:54Oh, I think I got asked about this on a supercars thing, and I'd actually forgotten about my first win.
- 3:01And I think it was because my brains flushed it out because there was that controversy over the safety car restart.
- 3:11And I didn't really get to enjoy that moment as much as I would like, Dov, because...
- 3:18it was then in a hearing afterwards.
- 3:20So I could never really celebrate.
- 3:21Yes.
- 3:22Yes.
- 3:22You know, like I've just won my first race because the needed to then go on afterwards to, um, to be decided, you know, if I had one or I hadn't won, why it wasn't probably as emotional or something that I was really pumped about or why I'd forgotten about it because, um,
- 3:38It was always overshadowed by the restart.
- 3:41But I think my best time and the thing that stands out to me the most at Brad Jones Racing was probably any time we're in the shootout, definitely when you're on the podium, those guys cheer –
- 3:53better than any other team I've been at.
- 3:55You know, they are very passionate.
- 3:57You know, when I win, you know, you feel it right through the team.
- 4:01You know, the morale, the hotel hangouts that we used to do after races or at night and things like that.
- 4:06You know, they're the fun things that I really remember.
- 4:08But my best weekend that springs to mind for me was Austin.
- 4:13You know, we went there.
- 4:14We got the pole there for the first race.
- 4:16And, you know, we were on the podium every race.
- 4:20And, you know, that was just a cool weekend.
- 4:24definitely one that uh one of the highlights for me was definitely that weekend
- 4:29Fans often ask when we're doing the podcast, Fabs, about the car, the race car, right?
- 4:34So, I mean, there's been the natural Holden v Ford rivalry over time.
- 4:39You've driven both Commodore, you've driven Mustang and Falcon.
- 4:43Is there one that you have this little affinity with?
- 4:45It could be any team from your time, your entire career, but is there one and a place and space where you just felt totally at one with it?
- 4:53What is that car and where?
- 4:55I really loved the car at Brad Jones Racing that I nicknamed Tallulah.
- 5:01Where did that come from?
- 5:02Where does that nickname be?
- 5:03My favourite movie is called Runnings and they called the Jamaican bobsled was called Tallulah.
- 5:10I was like, yeah, that's cool.
- 5:11We're going to rock that.
- 5:12And then the sign guy, Brad, came up with this name and then had the little picture of the bobsled next to it in Jamaican colours and...
- 5:21That was probably my favorite car that I've driven, a car of the future car.
- 5:28I had a lot of success in that car, but the people and things like that at that team were really cool and I really enjoyed it.
- 5:37But it's hard to definitely pinpoint that that's my favorite, but that's the one that springs out to me the most.
- 5:45The most recent one is obviously...
- 5:48the first championship win for Roger Penske and DJR team Penske here in Australia at, at, uh,
- 5:56um tasmania so that was cool um scotty was finished second so it was the first one two for the team but then also to have dick johnson on the podium as well you know that's sort of a one of those iconic moments that um you'll never be able to take away from me but also one that's you know pretty special to uh say you won the first race for i guess the first of the rebrand in a championship sense
- 6:18That is very cool, mate.
- 6:20I'm glad that you've brought that back and freshen our minds.
- 6:24In my second stint with supercars, with the broadcast team, there is a flashpoint.
- 6:29Gold Coast 2016 and an incident with Garth Tander.
- 6:33It's on the internet.
- 6:33We don't need to relive it necessarily.
- 6:36But the fallout from this, mate, was a massive cesspit of social media hate we all saw.
- 6:45all called for calm on it.
- 6:47And those pleas, thankfully, got a bit of traction.
- 6:50Was that the first time for you that perhaps you'd felt that, seen that, and how did that impact you?
- 6:58And-
- 7:00This is a long question.
- 7:01Apologies.
- 7:01But I sense now, mate, that you still do social media, but I sense you switch off.
- 7:05You do it, you post, and then that's it.
- 7:07Is that true also?
- 7:09Yeah, definitely.
- 7:10I do switch off.
- 7:13Social media has given people a voice that wouldn't necessarily had a voice in the past, so quite happy to hide behind their keyboard and write what they want.
- 7:20But they're also the next people queuing up at an autograph session for an autograph.
- 7:23So it's kind of a little bit mixed up.
- 7:30you know you're not always going to have um you know the same people on your team they don't always side with you they don't always agree with you but
- 7:37It's part of our sport.
- 7:39There's always going to be those people that are going to comment and have their two cents worth.
- 7:45Yeah, would I like it to be better?
- 7:46Would I like it to be cleaned up more and people to have a bit more respect?
- 7:52Yes, 100%.
- 7:54You watch anyone that does any sport that's good at what they do, they make it look easy.
- 8:01I can guarantee you, you put any one of these people that complain about our sport or what we do as drivers or what you're trying to achieve and thinking in split-second decisions, they'll be half-throttle.
- 8:12They'll be too scared to put it all the way to the floor because that's just the way they are.
- 8:16They're just not used to what we do.
- 8:18And you watch someone that's good at something and they...
- 8:21They make it look easy.
- 8:23It's not easy.
- 8:24And I speak for first to 25th on the grid in any form of motorsport.
- 8:29It's not an easy sport.
- 8:31It doesn't look as easy as it is when you watch it on TV and have a think about what you're going to write and what you're going to say.
- 8:39Is it valid?
- 8:40Is it constructive?
- 8:41Do you think it's put yourself in those person's shoes?
- 8:44Is it actually going to be a good thing or am I just going to look like an idiot?
- 8:48If there's someone out there that wants to say something, I'm quite happy just to comment and let my fans deal with it.
- 8:54It's part of our sport, you know what I mean?
- 8:56Like I say, I don't think we'll get rid of it completely, but it's just the way it is.
- 8:59I'm a huge believer, mate, that, you know, we want fans to wear those colours with pride.
- 9:06We want you to staunchly support your favourite team or driver.
- 9:08No drama with that at all, but just be...
- 9:11constructive and fair in that viewpoint and just be respectful of others.
- 9:15It's very, real simple, real, real simple.
- 9:17And, you know, if you wouldn't be that way, the bulk of us wouldn't be that way face to face.
- 9:23So don't do it on social media.
- 9:25Anyway, let's move on.
- 9:27When we first talked about the notion of you coming on Rusty's Garage, which I'm chuffed that we've been able to do, mate, it was back in May 2019.
- 9:34You and I were driving around in a Mustang on the Gold Coast for a bit of content.
- 9:38We talked about a number of things, and one of those things was that you would love, dearly have loved to sort of see out your professional career in that sense with Penske.
- 9:47Now, I know that didn't happen.
- 9:49You're doing some good things with Team Sydney now, which we'll cover in a second, but I wanted to get a sense from your side of things about, you know, the great times that you had at Team Penske and just how you compartmentalise that chapter of your career now.
- 10:02I'm very fortunate to be, you know, there through that period of time, you know, they were...
- 10:08struggling to be in the top 15 when I got there and came top 10 runners and top 10 runners and then become race winners.
- 10:14So I feel like I've played my part, done my, done my bit to, you know, to build that team and to, to create it with Scott to, to what it is today.
- 10:23And, um, yeah, I would have loved to have, uh, you know, ended my career, you know, driving for Roger, but I also said that,
- 10:31I would also rather Roger left the series than be replaced.
- 10:37For me, that was probably, you know, the best case scenario.
- 10:40You know, you've got to think, you know, back in the day that, you know, Roger saw something in me.
- 10:48He signed me to drive one of his cars and I actually sat down to him, sat down with Roger after I'd driven for him, you know, for years
- 10:57you know, six months or something.
- 10:58And it had come, I think it was in Perth.
- 11:00We went out for dinner with, uh, Tim Sendrick, Roger, you know, and a few other guys from, um, from Penske.
- 11:06And I said, what was, what was it?
- 11:09You know, why, why me out of everybody that you could have chose?
- 11:12Why, why me?
- 11:13And, uh, yeah,
- 11:15Both him and TC said it was a race they watched at Perth when we were qualifying and the red flag came out, but I actually got out of the gravel.
- 11:28So that red flagged me.
- 11:29So that meant that I lost my time and my time was disallowed.
- 11:32So I started last.
- 11:34And I finished fourth.
- 11:36And they said, the way you handled yourself, the way you come back through the field, there was minimal fuss and you just got on, you did your job.
- 11:44They said that was the time for them to make a decision on who they want.
- 11:49And, you know, that was me.
- 11:51Yeah, I was, you know, I was blown away to get the phone call.
- 11:54You know, you get the phone rings and it's an American number and you pick up the phone and like, G'day Fabian, it's Roger Penske here in his distinct American accent.
- 12:03And, you know, it's a real pinch yourself moment.
- 12:06You know, not many people can say they've won races for Roger.
- 12:09You know, I'm proud to say that I've done that.
- 12:12You know, we've won championships for Roger as well.
- 12:14So look, you know, who knows?
- 12:15We may cross paths again.
- 12:17I used to, I remember sitting down with Roger and saying, you might not remember, but I met Roger at the Porsche Motorsports Award dinner
- 12:26back in 2005 when the winner of the career cup championship, um, went over to Stuttgart in Germany to the, to the end of year motor sports party.
- 12:35And that's when they did the announcement for the sports car program.
- 12:38Um, you know, the, the spider, the DHL spider.
- 12:42And that's where I met Roger for the first time.
- 12:43And, um, yeah, pretty amazing how your paths cross and, um, you know, I ended up driving for him because back then I can assure you, I never thought I'd be driving for Roger Penske and, um,
- 12:54you know, it's pretty satisfying and I'm pretty proud to say that I have.
- 12:57Well done.
- 12:58You're with Team Sydney now.
- 13:00One of the listeners to the podcast, Nick Perkins on Facebook has said, is there some stuff that's perhaps carried over to the framework?
- 13:10Maybe you've brought it with you from an idea or an organisational sense from your chapter at DJR, Team Penske and similarities and differences.
- 13:19Very different from where I've been.
- 13:22Like any good business, it's about the people.
- 13:24So a big part of my decision was the fact that Jeff Slater rejoined the team from his spell in America with BMW.
- 13:32So we're in a building phase.
- 13:34You know what I mean?
- 13:35There's no secrets about that.
- 13:37So...
- 13:38like I say, any good business is about the people and employing the right people that can do their job and execute in a way that we can then perform and move forward.
- 13:47So there's no surprise, you know, where I was, was, you know, the pinnacle of supercars racing.
- 13:54And then I've gone to the other end where, you know, they struggled to...
- 13:58to be second to last on the grid.
- 14:00So I knew what I was getting myself into, but, you know, it was time to, I guess, get a re-motivated, have a, I wouldn't say re-motivated, it's probably the wrong word, a fresh start.
- 14:10The announcement of Penske leaving supercars was, you know, after Bathurst, you know, so it didn't leave me a lot of option to go out there and say, look, my services are available.
- 14:22So me and Jono have been friends for years.
- 14:26We used to race a career cup together.
- 14:28And we remained contact and, you know, we caught up in lockdown over a beer and a pizza in Casarina or wherever it was down the line in the border of New South Wales.
- 14:41And if we can come to agreement, let's do it.
- 14:44And here we are.
- 14:45A couple more from fans, if you don't mind, mate.
- 14:47Dan Boyle via Facebook says, could you have asked your second cousin, F1 driver, David Coulthard, for some help maybe to have extended that chapter abroad?
- 14:58I mean, I know you've had a little bit of dialogue, but it's not super close contact, is it?
- 15:02That's probably the key point to make here.
- 15:03Yeah, 100%.
- 15:05I met David at the Grand Prix when I was racing Formula Ford there.
- 15:09We had a quick catch-up.
- 15:11He gave me his phone number and things like that.
- 15:13But it's not something I ever wanted to draw upon.
- 15:17For me, I wanted to be known for Fabian, not live through David and
- 15:22and make it on my own.
- 15:24So, yeah, never really reached out, you know, now and again.
- 15:28David comes back to the Grand Prix.
- 15:29I think you've worked with him, Rusty, at Channel 10.
- 15:32And, you know, enough to say g'day, but it's not like, you know, we're invited to Christmas dinner or anything like that.
- 15:39Yep.
- 15:39A couple of left of field ones.
- 15:41Philip Walters says, have you ever tried Speedway?
- 15:43Now, I can't imagine the bloke I'm talking to now who has hair more perfect than mine, would you have ever tried Speedway?
- 15:51Is that a bit of you?
- 15:52I've had plenty of offers.
- 15:54I was a mad Speedway fan growing up in New Zealand.
- 15:57Every Saturday night we'd go to Western Springs and...
- 16:00You're a racer, so you appreciate anyone good at what they do and watch them do their craft.
- 16:05And I was always a big fan of Speedway.
- 16:08I never really got the bug.
- 16:11Given some opportunities to drive a sprint car, they look pretty angry.
- 16:16They look like a lot of fun, but I think it's a totally different skill set to what I'm used to.
- 16:20Hope you get a chance to tick that box, mate, even if it is just for a bit of fun.
- 16:24Resto Projects, we've covered the loft.
- 16:27What about this BMX bike you have been sharing recently?
- 16:31What is it?
- 16:31Where did this come from?
- 16:33And what was the sort of inspiration for what you've ended up with?
- 16:37Tell us more.
- 16:38I had a BMX like every kid had when they were younger, but I never had a BMX with the tough wheels.
- 16:43I was like, well, I'm at the point now where I can make one.
- 16:47I found a 1982 frame, which is the same birth year as me.
- 16:53What are we talking about?
- 16:54eBay?
- 16:55Where did you find this thing?
- 16:56I found it on Facebook Marketplace, I think.
- 16:59I went down the path and I bought that and I was like, well, I want to restore it.
- 17:03The thing significant about this is it's a Skyway frame, but the frame is the same shape as Formula Ford wishbone tubing.
- 17:10So it's totally aerodynamic is the slogan for the frame.
- 17:16And for me, that was cool.
- 17:18It resonated with me with racing and aerodynamics and stuff like that.
- 17:22And I was like, well, I'm going to restore this to...
- 17:25as best I can to period correct parts.
- 17:27So there's still a few things that I need to find to make it period correct, but everything I've been able to find at the moment is Mickey Mouse.
- 17:36There's a Skyway appreciation page on Facebook, which I'm a fan of, and I posted it up there and I says, look,
- 17:44Long-time viewer, first-time poster.
- 17:46Here's my bike.
- 17:46This is what I've done.
- 17:48And, you know, from all the enthusiasts that are well into Skyways, they're like, mate, you've been paying attention.
- 17:53This thing's nine, nine and a half out of ten.
- 17:55So I'm pretty happy.
- 17:57It's going to be, you know, a bit of a commuter, I guess, or chase the kids around on their scooters for a little bit.
- 18:03But I've got the approval at home from Beck that I can actually hang it on the wall as a bit of art.
- 18:09I've been in contact with Kurt Kostecki.
- 18:11He's a bit of a wizard with –
- 18:13you know, folding up aluminium and making things flash.
- 18:16And we've come up with a bit of a process to hang it through the pedal.
- 18:20So it will stand off the wall so the handlebars can still be straight and be a bit of a centerpiece.
- 18:25So yeah, it's what am I going to do next is probably more to the point.
- 18:29Great stuff.
- 18:30Well, that leads us to people asking about any car restos.
- 18:33And if there's not, is there a wish car?
- 18:35Is there a car you'd love to have a crack at one day?
- 18:38If I could dedicate the time and things like that, maybe I'd like to get one of my Formula Fords back, but there's not a huge desire for it.
- 18:46It takes up a lot of space in your garage, and at the moment I'm not in a position to take up the garage.
- 18:51I've got to put the Volvo somewhere, so that's got its pride of place at the moment.
- 18:57That's because you're a proud dad.
- 18:58Twins.
- 18:59Jeff Hurl on Facebook is asking, can you imagine life without...
- 19:04those beautiful kids.
- 19:05And before they came along for you and Becky, did you imagine life with kids?
- 19:10Yeah, I always wanted to become a father.
- 19:11So I said if I had kids by 34, I'd be happy.
- 19:16And I was, I think, 35 when they were born.
- 19:19So, you know, that met my criteria of becoming a dad.
- 19:23You kind of have to be a little bit selfish in a way.
- 19:26Racing is very one way.
- 19:29not saying that I'm not any less focused, but I feel like I'm at the point of my career where I can, you know, be able to do both.
- 19:36Whereas in your younger days, your focus is to win every single time.
- 19:41My focus remains still to win every single time, but I can still have the capacity, I guess, to be able to entertain that there's kids there as well.
- 19:49And a fiance being Beck that I can, you know, manage, I guess in my younger days, I wouldn't have been able to manage all that.
- 19:55So,
- 19:56um the kids are perfect you know love them both dearly you know mckenzie and carter they're the best thing that's happened to both beck and i we're at a friend's place yesterday um toasty marshmallows around the fire and mckenzie came out she goes unprovoked daddy you know that i love you and like mate that stuff just makes your heart melt you know i kind of wish that i'd done it sooner but um the selfish me said no
- 20:31Why did Fabian's bike fall off the wall?
- 20:34It was too tired.
- 20:36Ha, ha, ha.
- 20:38Ha.
- 20:39Funny GPS.
- 20:41Paul Picard via Instagram.
- 20:43Coffee beans.
- 20:43Which ones do you use?
- 20:45And that leads me to, are you a trained barista?
- 20:47You are pretty handy when it comes to making a good coffee, aren't you?
- 20:51I haven't had a lesson, but I've done a lot of research on YouTube about, you know, grind and all the variables and things like that.
- 20:59And I love my coffee.
- 21:01And since the twins were born, all of a sudden you'll be able to appreciate that you don't have the time to go to a coffee shop and just have a coffee or a breakfast.
- 21:10So I said to Beck, let's bring the coffee to us.
- 21:13I said, I'm going to buy a great machine and we're going to have cafe quality coffee at home and I'm going to learn how to do it.
- 21:19And, you know, every morning it's become a ritual of mine to get up, make coffee.
- 21:23It's the first thing I do.
- 21:24I enjoy it.
- 21:25You know, I'm working on my latte art.
- 21:27That's getting better.
- 21:28Yeah.
- 21:29But yeah, like I said, I'm self-taught.
- 21:31So I weigh my coffee grinds.
- 21:34I've got a distribution tool that makes the coffee flat before you tamp it.
- 21:38That's another variable that you take out of it.
- 21:41I time my coffee shot, you know, and things like that and weigh my grind.
- 21:44So you get it as repeatable as you can every time.
- 21:48And yeah.
- 21:49It's a science, but I'm still learning.
- 21:51I'm still improving my coffee.
- 21:54I ask Beck quite often, oh, what do you think about this?
- 21:56Do you like that grind setting?
- 21:57What about that temperature change?
- 22:00She's like, it's all good, so just keep doing what you're doing.
- 22:03I love it.
- 22:03I love the detail in it too, mate, and that you're enjoying that process.
- 22:06A few more to finish if we can.
- 22:08Firstly, was it difficult to leave Brad Jones Racing when that great opportunity sort of kind of came along?
- 22:13It was.
- 22:14Yeah.
- 22:15But it's all about opportunity and, you know, you don't get that opportunity every day.
- 22:20That opportunity doesn't come along.
- 22:22And, you know, it was hard for Brad.
- 22:25You know, I think Brad thought that, you know, this was a deal that was done, you know, a long time before I actually told Brad.
- 22:32But, you know, I swear to this day that it wasn't.
- 22:36It's taken a while for...
- 22:38both Brad and I, to get back onto good terms.
- 22:40But I feel like now, you know, a lot of water's passed under the bridge since then.
- 22:43And, you know, we're back at a point where our relationship's probably as good as what it was when I was driving for Brad.
- 22:49What about proudest moment in supercars?
- 22:51The thing that the trophy, the moment that stands out the most.
- 22:55Maybe it was Tasmania.
- 22:56Maybe it was standing on the Bathurst podium.
- 22:57Who knows?
- 22:58Or, you know, not a regret per se, but maybe something that you look back on and think, you know, I wish I had maybe it was in what you were talking about with Brett Jones before in the way you tackled something and done it in a different way.
- 23:12I think anytime you have success and no matter what team it is, you know, as a racing driver, you wake up every morning to win.
- 23:20And I think winning is what keeps the motivation, keeps the drive in a driver.
- 23:27You know, as a racing driver, you do more losing than you do winning.
- 23:32So, yeah, that feeling and that sense of achievement you get when you win a race is pretty hard to describe.
- 23:38And I think that's what keeps me coming back.
- 23:40So it would definitely be winning.
- 23:42All right.
- 23:42Ryan McGregor from Gisborne in New Zealand on Facebook says, just the challenge of a teammate, and I mean it could be any teammate, but he's referenced Scotty McLaughlin here, and how that sort of shaped you working with someone like that.
- 23:55I would have had a lot more race wins and polls if Scott wasn't there.
- 23:58Yeah.
- 24:00You know, we finished one, two quite often, you know, qualified on the front row quite often.
- 24:07But, you know, it was just –
- 24:10he was at a bit like what Shane's going through at the moment.
- 24:13You know, they're, they were at the top of their game and, and performing under unbelievably week in, week out.
- 24:19And, you know, that's something that's hard to do.
- 24:21And I'm kind of a little bit disappointed that no one will else will get compared to Scott.
- 24:27Like I got compared to Scott, because I think you could put anyone in my position and it would have been the same result.
- 24:33So,
- 24:34um, yeah, he was at the peak of his powers, but, you know, we had a great relationship, you know, good working relationship where we, uh, we understood our role and, you know, what our job was within the race team.
- 24:44And,
- 24:45famous saying was when the team wins, we win.
- 24:47So that's what we stood by.
- 24:49Good.
- 24:50Final one on that sort of train of thought.
- 24:51Dean Ranford from Hastings in New Zealand asked via Facebook as well.
- 24:57Just around that whole notion of that story on equality that came out in July this year.
- 25:02Are you and Scotty getting on okay?
- 25:04And, you know, do you feel that it was a level playing field when you shared the garage, you guys?
- 25:11I think that got taken out of context.
- 25:14I'm glad you bring that up because I wanted to know if that was the case.
- 25:16So, yeah.
- 25:17I think it was all taken out of context more than anything.
- 25:19And it was a storm in a teacup, so to speak.
- 25:23So it's an article that's been written.
- 25:26I don't need to comment any further about it.
- 25:28almost 20 years in the Supercars paddock.
- 25:30Have you stopped to ponder that?
- 25:32Well, that is remarkable.
- 25:33I know you're not there yet.
- 25:35I'm not making you sound old, mate, but I just think that's when you ponder the kid that grew up in Auckland with a dream to go and race cars, to think that you could be in the premier form of touring car racing in this part of the world for nearly that period of time, that's mighty, don't you think?
- 25:49I think when I feel old is when I watch back on Foxtel when I'm on Supercars Classic.
- 25:56mate, I'm on there all the time, so you've got nothing to worry about.
- 25:59I think that's the moment where I'm like, Jesus, I've been in this sport for a long time.
- 26:04That's been great, and I enjoy it, and I still hope there's a few years left in me.
- 26:09So, yeah, it's really amazing when some of those stats come out, like it's my 450th round or things like that.
- 26:17That's not something that I keep track of, but when you sit back and reflect on it and think about it, it's like, yeah, I've been in this sport a long time, and yeah.
- 26:24You know, I've grown, you know, through the generations, you know, through the different model of cars, you know, Gen 3, things like that.
- 26:32Hopefully, I'm going to be there for that, depending on when that kicks off, hopefully the middle of next year.
- 26:38Car of the future, you know, I've done all that transition as well.
- 26:41So...
- 26:42Yeah, it's cool.
- 26:43Final question for you.
- 26:44What's on the bucket or wish list for you?
- 26:46Is there a want to go and do some sports car racing somewhere?
- 26:51Is there a little event somewhere that you'd love to say, yeah, I definitely want to tick that.
- 26:55That's not done yet for me.
- 26:56Yeah, I'd love to do some endurance racing, you know, Spa 24-hour, Daytona 24-hour, you know, the more prestigious events, Le Mans 24-hour, I think all those events.
- 27:07you know, marquee events around the world.
- 27:09That's definitely something that Fabian wants to go and do one day.
- 27:11And, you know, who knows?
- 27:13There may be an opportunity sooner rather than later.
- 27:15But, you know, while I'm racing supercars, obviously, that's the focus and it needs to fit in within that calendar and things like that.
- 27:22But, yeah, they would be some real cool events to be able to go and do and enjoy and, you know, hopefully have some success at.
- 27:30Mate, it's been fabulous to catch up.
- 27:31Thank you very much for spending the time, for answering some listener questions.
- 27:36Congratulations on everything so far and keep enjoying.
- 27:39That's the most important thing.
- 27:40Yeah, mate, fantastic.
- 27:41I like that pun as well.
- 27:42Fabulous.
- 27:42Good.
