- 0:00Speaker 1: Time. Now we're back to the basics and healthcare with
- 0:02Speaker 1: Balanced Life Chiropractic, and we have doctor Harley joining and
- 0:04Speaker 1: say doing doctor Harley, Hey.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Good morning, John, I'm doing fantastic.
- 0:08Speaker 1: I've always wondered this, How do you know, like when
- 0:10Speaker 1: you injure yourself if you use heat or if you
- 0:13Speaker 1: use cold, and you said you kind of have a
- 0:15Speaker 1: way to discern that.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I've been getting that question a lot lately. Of
- 0:19Speaker 2: a see, with all of the freezes overnight, we're slipping
- 0:22Speaker 2: a lot, falling in the parking lot or on the
- 0:24Speaker 2: sidewalk on our way to work, and now you're you're
- 0:27Speaker 2: banged up, and you're like, well, now what do I do?
- 0:29Speaker 2: Do I use heat or should I use ice? Like
- 0:32Speaker 2: what's going on?
- 0:33Speaker 1: Is there ever time where you do both?
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yeah? You know, I would. It really just depends on
- 0:37Speaker 2: the situation.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Put on an ice packet, sit on a heat pad
- 0:39Speaker 1: all the same time.
- 0:40Speaker 2: Well, what you would do in that situation is you
- 0:42Speaker 2: would do twenty minutes on with ice or heat, and
- 0:46Speaker 2: then you'd switch to the other one. Okay, so twenty
- 0:49Speaker 2: minutes on like with each like going back and forth.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Not my silly thing where the thing would just melt right, Yeah, that.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Would probably be very productive there, So it's kind of ironic.
- 1:00Speaker 2: They'd be like, oh, I slipped on the ice, Well,
- 1:02Speaker 2: then that should be talking. You should use ice for
- 1:04Speaker 2: that injury, because that's gonna be an acute injury. It's
- 1:06Speaker 2: gonna be hot, it's gonna be inflamed. If it's muscle
- 1:09Speaker 2: tight like if it's muscle inflammation, or if it's joint pain,
- 1:13Speaker 2: you should use ice to help calm down that inflammation.
- 1:15Speaker 2: But it's really only effective about up to seventy two
- 1:18Speaker 2: hours after the injury.
- 1:19Speaker 1: So if it's still hurting after that, you've got more
- 1:21Speaker 1: than just a little bump that you need ice.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Hu Right after three days, it should start to be
- 1:26Speaker 2: you know, you should be able to move a little
- 1:27Speaker 2: bit better, shouldn't be as in much pain if you're
- 1:30Speaker 2: using that ice. Now, if you have more muscle tightness,
- 1:33Speaker 2: like achy type of pain, like arthritic type of pain,
- 1:36Speaker 2: then heat would be good. You know, if you're just
- 1:38Speaker 2: waking up in the morning you're sore, achy, like, oh,
- 1:40Speaker 2: I must have worked out too hard yesterday or something,
- 1:43Speaker 2: then using heat to help relax those muscles again, using
- 1:45Speaker 2: it for about twenty minutes and with cold you do
- 1:48Speaker 2: twenty minutes. You want to wait, it's called seaban and
- 1:51Speaker 2: so it's cold and it's burning and then it goes numb.
- 1:53Speaker 2: So we want to get to that numb point when
- 1:55Speaker 2: you're icing something. So getting to the burning part kind
- 1:58Speaker 2: of sucks. If you've ever had to ice your ang
- 2:00Speaker 2: coal and an ice bucket, I've had to do that,
- 2:02Speaker 2: and it hurts your toes. But getting through that to
- 2:05Speaker 2: get to the numb that's when you get we get
- 2:06Speaker 2: the most benefit from ice.
- 2:08Speaker 1: So the doing the heat then cool, then heat then cool.
- 2:12Speaker 1: How what do you do? Why would you do that?
- 2:14Speaker 1: Or when is the reason?
- 2:15Speaker 2: So that would be a good one for like post
- 2:17Speaker 2: at post exercise or post kind of something like that
- 2:21Speaker 2: where you like a weekend warrior project, not something that's
- 2:24Speaker 2: like an acute injury, because you don't want to use
- 2:26Speaker 2: heat on something that's acute, like something that's new that's
- 2:29Speaker 2: really painful.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Because it's already got heat.
- 2:30Speaker 2: It's already we do see inflammation there. Shot.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So then if you are going to do the ice
- 2:36Speaker 1: and then the warm and the ice in the warm,
- 2:38Speaker 1: you said it's like twenty minutes, twenty minutes, twenty I
- 2:40Speaker 1: do it.
- 2:40Speaker 2: For about an hour, so you would probably get you know,
- 2:43Speaker 2: through two cycles with it, okay.
- 2:45Speaker 1: So and then again, if people are having issues, they
- 2:48Speaker 1: should also seek chiropractic help, and I encourage them to
- 2:51Speaker 1: come see you.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Especially if you slipped on the ice, because not only
- 2:54Speaker 2: were you fell is gonna hurt, but you're gonna have
- 2:56Speaker 2: so much like a jolt through the rest of your body.
- 2:58Speaker 2: So the thing's a going it locked up, not gonna
- 3:00Speaker 2: be moving very well. And if we don't do anything
- 3:02Speaker 2: about it now while it's stuck, you're gonna have issues
- 3:04Speaker 2: down the road because things have been overcompensating. They're having
- 3:07Speaker 2: to work harder for those areas that are stuck. It's
- 3:09Speaker 2: gonna take a lot longer versus getting checked out early,
- 3:12Speaker 2: like right after you fail. That way we can make
- 3:14Speaker 2: sure things are moving. You're gonna heal faster, you're gonna
- 3:16Speaker 2: get back on your feet a lot quicker.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And there are a lot of things that can be
- 3:20Speaker 1: fixed by chiropractic if they have like a bone sticking
- 3:22Speaker 1: out of the skin. Maybe not, but you know, if
- 3:24Speaker 1: you if you fell and you know you've got a
- 3:26Speaker 1: little little sore here and there, that's the perfect thing
- 3:29Speaker 1: for somebody to come see a chiropractor about isn't it right?
- 3:32Speaker 2: And I mean we say you fail and you're like, oh,
- 3:33Speaker 2: I don't know what to do. I'm in a lot
- 3:35Speaker 2: of pain. You know, we can assess you and see
- 3:36Speaker 2: if it's something that we can take care of or
- 3:38Speaker 2: if it's something you need, you know, more advanced medical
- 3:42Speaker 2: help with what.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Is the best way for somebody to connect with you
- 3:44Speaker 1: to find out if maybe what you have to offer
- 3:47Speaker 1: is something that's a good.
