- 0:00Speaker 1: Hm, so I'm going here. Oh is it? I know
- 0:03Speaker 1: what that means? Yes, in Elena on the phone, It's time.
- 0:06Speaker 2: For Elena Wood from Nightingale College. Good morning, miss Wood.
- 0:13Speaker 3: Good morning, good morning. What a lovely introduction today. Thank you.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I just was listening to the music and it made
- 0:20Speaker 2: me want to talk like an old time announcing good.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Morning, miss Wood.
- 0:26Speaker 3: Good morning.
- 0:27Speaker 2: All right, what have we got today? Coping with stress?
- 0:31Speaker 3: Yes, A lot of times when we feel stressed, it
- 0:34Speaker 3: can be really tempting to turn to a lot of
- 0:37Speaker 3: our you know, typical coping mechanism. Alcohol, you know, just
- 0:41Speaker 3: say say it, alcohol, hall, whatever it might be. And
- 0:47Speaker 3: I just today have some options that are a little
- 0:50Speaker 3: bit more helpful, a little bit healthier for us.
- 0:52Speaker 1: All right, all right, go ahead, Okay.
- 0:56Speaker 3: The first one is to feel and name your feelings.
- 1:01Speaker 3: A lot of times when we have these uncomfortable emotions
- 1:04Speaker 3: pop up, we, like I said, we don't want to
- 1:06Speaker 3: feel them, and when we give them a name, it
- 1:09Speaker 3: actually helps us to be more capable of feeling and
- 1:13Speaker 3: processing them. So trying to say something like this is
- 1:17Speaker 3: a feeling of stress, and that can help us to
- 1:21Speaker 3: more easily move on.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Oh, I thought you meant like, I'm feeling this feel,
- 1:26Speaker 2: this feeling.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Of anger, and I'm naming it Tom.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I mean, if you really want to, you're welcome.
- 1:32Speaker 1: To personalized it somehow. Is Tom bothering you again?
- 1:38Speaker 2: Yeah, but just just sort of if you.
- 1:46Speaker 1: Yes, what's the next one?
- 1:49Speaker 3: The next one is to treat the feelings as messengers precisely. Yeah,
- 1:59Speaker 3: you know, the part of the purpose of these emotions
- 2:02Speaker 3: that arise is to tell us that something is off,
- 2:07Speaker 3: and so if we allow them to, they can be
- 2:10Speaker 3: a catalyst for change. They can just kind of help
- 2:13Speaker 3: us understand better how we feel about what's going on
- 2:17Speaker 3: in the world.
- 2:17Speaker 2: If you're stressed about a situation, maybe it's because you
- 2:21Speaker 2: weren't prepared for it, and maybe next time that situation
- 2:25Speaker 2: is coming up, you'll be better prepared.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Thanks, Jana, Now you've made me feel guilty.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Hint.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Anybody, So now choose an action that you can take.
- 2:38Speaker 1: What in an action to counteract it or what?
- 2:43Speaker 3: Well, this can be honestly about anything. If you notice
- 2:46Speaker 3: that you're feeling stressed out about a situation, there might
- 2:50Speaker 3: be something that you can do to alleviate that stress.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Maybe prepare a little bit more, maybe pause and take
- 2:56Speaker 3: a few breaths. If you're feeling overwhelmed by the world
- 3:00Speaker 3: at large, which I think a lot of us are,
- 3:03Speaker 3: you know, there's small things we can do. We can
- 3:06Speaker 3: write to our officials, we can call in those kinds
- 3:09Speaker 3: of things.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel pressured every year around this time about
- 3:15Speaker 2: taxes and getting taxes done.
- 3:17Speaker 1: And I excuse me and all.
- 3:20Speaker 2: And I realized that all I really have to do
- 3:24Speaker 2: is call and make an appointment to get them done.
- 3:26Speaker 1: But I, yeah, but it for some reason, I don't
- 3:30Speaker 1: do that.
- 3:32Speaker 3: And if you just do the thing, you'll stop feeling
- 3:34Speaker 3: stressed about it.
- 3:35Speaker 2: Finally I did it yesterday, and and I've been feeling
- 3:38Speaker 2: stressed about it for like two weeks, and finally yesterday, Okay,
- 3:41Speaker 2: I'll come in next week and we'll do them.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Good job.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Really stupid, you know anyway, But you're not alone.
- 3:49Speaker 3: We all do this kind of stuff.
- 3:51Speaker 1: We're all stupid depression. What else? What have we got here? Now?
- 3:58Speaker 1: Build community?
- 3:59Speaker 3: Build community? Yes, so seek out and provide support and comfort.
- 4:06Speaker 3: Get close with the people that are your physical neighbors,
- 4:10Speaker 3: as well as making connections with folks who are your
- 4:13Speaker 3: digital neighbors, so to speak. So just doing your best
- 4:16Speaker 3: to be part of your your local group.
- 4:20Speaker 2: Okay, now this one, when I try to move my body,
- 4:23Speaker 2: this is also depressing suppression.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Yeah, moving our body can be super helpful. A lot
- 4:32Speaker 3: of times that sensation of stress is also accompanied by
- 4:37Speaker 3: that physical freeze response, and so just finding ways to
- 4:41Speaker 3: move our body can help us to kind of process
- 4:44Speaker 3: those emotions, get out of that physical freeze. And this
- 4:47Speaker 3: doesn't have to be like go into a CrossFit class
- 4:50Speaker 3: or something like that. It can be a walk. You
- 4:53Speaker 3: can wrestle with your dog, you can dance in your
- 4:57Speaker 3: living room, whatever it is.
- 4:58Speaker 1: That's the one I want you to do. Bil dance
- 5:00Speaker 1: in your living room.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I'm gonna come over and dance in your living room.
- 5:08Speaker 3: Okay, what's next next is to find some joy. You know,
- 5:17Speaker 3: when we're feeling stressed, our brain really fixates on all
- 5:21Speaker 3: of the perceived threats around us. And so being really
- 5:25Speaker 3: intentional about finding joy, humor, pleasure, all of these themes,
- 5:31Speaker 3: this small happiness that can really help our brain to
- 5:35Speaker 3: recalibrate a little bit. And notice that, you know, the
- 5:38Speaker 3: whole world is it out to get us?
- 5:40Speaker 1: So to speak, Well, I don't know exactly. I think
- 5:49Speaker 1: maybe the world is out to get me. Yeah, I
- 5:53Speaker 1: mean just.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Tom tom uh.
- 6:02Speaker 1: And then.
- 6:04Speaker 2: And then seek is seek help the next one or yeah,
- 6:07Speaker 2: yeah yeah, seek help that is yeah, that's good.
- 6:11Speaker 3: That yeah. I just know that there is help out there.
- 6:15Speaker 3: There's professional care that you can use, there's community resources,
- 6:20Speaker 3: all these different avenues that we can take, and of course,
- 6:23Speaker 3: if it is an emergency, you can dial the nine
- 6:26Speaker 3: eighty eight crisis line.
- 6:27Speaker 2: All right, Elena Wood Nightingale College. Where can people find
- 6:31Speaker 2: out more?
- 6:33Speaker 3: You can learn more about this as well as Nightingale's
