- 0:33Speaker 1: this hour's keyword is azalea. Now live from Indianapolis, we
- 0:39Speaker 1: have Jeff legwaldt ESPN dot com. Hello, Leggy Fellas, this
- 0:44Speaker 1: is your annual trek. I hope you're having fun out
- 0:46Speaker 1: there in Indy. But immediately out of the gates we
- 0:49Speaker 1: get the news at Davis Webb is gonna be handed
- 0:51Speaker 1: the play sheet. The question is is he calling all
- 0:55Speaker 1: of the plays or will Sean Payton still nudge his
- 0:58Speaker 1: way in there.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Well, he's always going to weigh in and I will
- 1:02Speaker 2: say that any offensive coordinator who isn't the head coach. Uh,
- 1:08Speaker 2: here's the way in from the head coach all the
- 1:12Speaker 2: time that that that always happens, always has happened, always
- 1:16Speaker 2: will happen, and it always will happen now in Denver
- 1:21Speaker 2: with Davis Webb. But this is a real move. This
- 1:24Speaker 2: isn't some convoluted figurehead saying he fully intense for Davis
- 1:33Speaker 2: web to call plays on game day and that he'll
- 1:35Speaker 2: you know, still be in all the game planning during
- 1:38Speaker 2: the week. But that uh, when it comes to, you know,
- 1:43Speaker 2: the voice in bo Nix's ear on game day, it's
- 1:45Speaker 2: gonna be It's gonna be Davis Webb.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Jeffery, you know, Sean Payton. How difficult was that for
- 1:52Speaker 3: him to make that decision?
- 1:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I asked of that directly. I said, was this
- 1:57Speaker 2: a difficult decision for you? And I do think it is.
- 2:04Speaker 2: You know, I will tell the story. I talked to
- 2:06Speaker 2: somebody who knows them well on Sunday. So obviously Sean
- 2:10Speaker 2: had made this decision before Sunday, and probably he knew
- 2:14Speaker 2: it and Davis knew it. But I talked to someone
- 2:17Speaker 2: who knows him very well on Sunday, and his quote
- 2:20Speaker 2: to me was, no way in hell Sean Payton gives
- 2:23Speaker 2: up play calling, And you know he did. And I
- 2:27Speaker 2: think it's a pretty significant move. Even as much as
- 2:32Speaker 2: we're talking about it, I think we've probably still not
- 2:36Speaker 2: gotten to the significance of it. I mean, he's always
- 2:40Speaker 2: called plays. He's had a lot of success. You know,
- 2:43Speaker 2: there was a decade run there in New Orleans where
- 2:46Speaker 2: it was historical and people were writing books about it
- 2:51Speaker 2: type of thing. And I don't think this was an
- 2:53Speaker 2: easy decision for him, But I think it is a
- 2:57Speaker 2: significant self awareness step that he looked at what he
- 3:03Speaker 2: thought and a lot of people thought was a Super
- 3:05Speaker 2: Bowl team that didn't play in a super Bowl. And
- 3:10Speaker 2: it's obvious when he stepped back and look at it
- 3:12Speaker 2: all that he thought the way he called plays, the
- 3:16Speaker 2: way they ran offense, was a significant reason why they
- 3:20Speaker 2: didn't play in the super Bowl.
- 3:21Speaker 3: You call it self awareness. Do you think there was
- 3:23Speaker 3: any outside influence to him making this decision.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I don't think. I think he has too much juice
- 3:30Speaker 2: within that he wouldn't have taken the job if a
- 3:34Speaker 2: decision like that could be made or forced upon him.
- 3:39Speaker 2: I don't think and that's my opinion just from being
- 3:42Speaker 2: around everybody with the organization. I don't think he would
- 3:46Speaker 2: have taken the Broncos job if that was the type
- 3:49Speaker 2: of decision he couldn't make as a head coach. So
- 3:53Speaker 2: I think he made this decision, and I think, frankly,
- 3:57Speaker 2: he surprised a lot of people in the building with it.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Jeff Lake buld with his ESPN dot com All conversations
- 4:03Speaker 1: with Legyar brought to you by the International Brotherhood of Electrical
- 4:06Speaker 1: Workers IBW Local sixty eight, start with the job and
- 4:09Speaker 1: with a career. You know, it's funny when he comes
- 4:13Speaker 1: to a decision like this to hand over these play
- 4:15Speaker 1: calling duties. Do you think it's more about his belief
- 4:17Speaker 1: in Davis web or is it partly like he maybe
- 4:21Speaker 1: he doesn't think he's as good now as he was
- 4:23Speaker 1: ten years ago.
- 4:25Speaker 2: It's probably a little of both. This is he thinks
- 4:28Speaker 2: immensely of Davis Webb. We should not underestimate that. There
- 4:32Speaker 2: probably isn't maybe any other person he would have done
- 4:36Speaker 2: this for. I don't think right now. I think this
- 4:39Speaker 2: is a factor of timing where Davis Webb is and
- 4:42Speaker 2: his progression as a coach with the Broncos are as
- 4:46Speaker 2: a team. But this definitely has a ton to do
- 4:49Speaker 2: with Sean Payton's belief in what Davis Webb and who
- 4:54Speaker 2: Davis Webb is as a coach, and that he would
- 4:57Speaker 2: like him around for bow Nicks, for the Bronz. For
- 5:00Speaker 2: Sean Payton, he wants Davis web around, and he has
- 5:05Speaker 2: given anytime anyone in the league, another coach, or an
- 5:08Speaker 2: owner or anybody has asked him about Davis Webb, he's
- 5:11Speaker 2: given nothing but glowing reports. So enough plot about who
- 5:18Speaker 2: Davis web is, because I don't think any other name
- 5:22Speaker 2: on a sheet of paper could have you know, I
- 5:24Speaker 2: don't think there's any other person he would have done
- 5:26Speaker 2: this for in the league right now.
- 5:28Speaker 4: Jeff, my hole is supposed to be shut, but I
- 5:30Speaker 4: can't help myself, don't ask. I really liked his commentary
- 5:35Speaker 4: regarding last this past season, in the close games, in
- 5:38Speaker 4: the one score games, and his realization that man that
- 5:41Speaker 4: can flip on a dime that can be completely opposite
- 5:44Speaker 4: next year, or a mixture or something like that. I
- 5:46Speaker 4: don't know whether he's had an epiphany or what the
- 5:49Speaker 4: case may be, but I look at it. I like
- 5:52Speaker 4: the healthy things he's saying and maybe this is the
- 5:55Speaker 4: healthiest thing he could do overall. I mean, he seemed
- 5:58Speaker 4: very calm, very relaxed, and very at ease with everything
- 6:01Speaker 4: when we saw him a couple of days ago.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Your thoughts, yeah, Moja, I think you know. I think
- 6:08Speaker 2: it shows you how good he thought that team was
- 6:12Speaker 2: last year and how disappointed he is they didn't get
- 6:15Speaker 2: to play for the big prize with a team he
- 6:20Speaker 2: said from the start was one of the very few
- 6:23Speaker 2: he's ever had that he thought could win a Super Bowl.
- 6:26Speaker 2: So I think you got to start there. When he
- 6:29Speaker 2: didn't get the ultimate goal with this team, he had
- 6:33Speaker 2: to look at it, and I mean the close game
- 6:37Speaker 2: saying that that's how people should look at it. I
- 6:40Speaker 2: know we always don't, but just ask the Chiefs. I mean,
- 6:44Speaker 2: the Broncos broke the record for one score wins in
- 6:48Speaker 2: a season that the Chiefs set last year. And obviously,
- 6:52Speaker 2: the Chiefs, with Patrick Mahomes' injury and an aging roster
- 6:57Speaker 2: and the rest of it, you know, didn't even make
- 7:00Speaker 2: the playoffs after setting what was the one score win record.
- 7:05Speaker 2: So I think if it's the best way to look
- 7:08Speaker 2: at it, and if you don't look at it, that way,
- 7:11Speaker 2: I think you're just asking for trouble. I don't think
- 7:15Speaker 2: the statistical reliability of thinking you're going to repeat that
- 7:22Speaker 2: level of one score wins is not a good thing
- 7:26Speaker 2: to do.
- 7:27Speaker 1: Jeff Lee Bold, ESPN Dot come with us. What's the
- 7:29Speaker 1: big scuttle butt around Indianapolis right now?
- 7:33Speaker 2: Well, that's that this is It's not the words you
- 7:36Speaker 2: guys want to hear, but it's a defensive draft, and
- 7:39Speaker 2: the best players on this board are predominantly on defense,
- 7:43Speaker 2: and the you know, the big question here is it's
- 7:48Speaker 2: certainly not one of the Broncos have to worry about.
- 7:50Speaker 2: But the big question here is, after Mendoza, if you
- 7:54Speaker 2: need a quarterback, what are you going to do in
- 7:57Speaker 2: this draft? Because there's you could put the names and
- 8:00Speaker 2: the hat right now, asking a scout or a GM
- 8:03Speaker 2: or anybody who's QB two and QB three and so
- 8:06Speaker 2: on you get you'd get five hundred different lists right now.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Yeah, but there's nothing wrong with that. I mean, cycles
- 8:14Speaker 3: come and go when it comes to quarterbacks and all
- 8:16Speaker 3: that business. I'm just curious to see if the Broncos
- 8:19Speaker 3: address their immediate needs in free agency or if they
- 8:23Speaker 3: wait for the draft. We'll get a sense in what
- 8:25Speaker 3: the Bronco's doing the draft by what they do in
- 8:27Speaker 3: free agency.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Don't you think you always just because that's that's how
- 8:31Speaker 2: the calendar works too. But this is not a particularly
- 8:34Speaker 2: good free agent class. People. I mean, all you got
- 8:38Speaker 2: to do is look at the Broncos to see why
- 8:40Speaker 2: the Broncos have resigned ten ten of their own players.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Is that because teams are figuring out that retention and
- 8:48Speaker 3: chemistry is that important.
- 8:51Speaker 2: It is that too, And the best way to manage
- 8:53Speaker 2: your cap is to have guys on long term deals
- 8:57Speaker 2: that you control, and then you supplement with the draft.
- 9:02Speaker 2: You know, you've got to have you got to have
- 9:05Speaker 2: a high percentage of starters who are on their rookie deals,
- 9:08Speaker 2: who are homegrown players, and you know that's that's chemistry.
- 9:11Speaker 2: You know, those are guys invested in the team they
- 9:15Speaker 2: play for, you know, because they've they've been there, they've
- 9:18Speaker 2: been resigned, they were drafted there. That's that's the easiest
- 9:23Speaker 2: and best way to build chemistry. And I mean, all
- 9:26Speaker 2: you got to do is look at the teams that
- 9:27Speaker 2: keep playing in the Super Bowl mix every year, and
- 9:32Speaker 2: it isn't a long list, it's there's an awful lot
- 9:34Speaker 2: of homegrown players on their draft picks and then you know,
- 9:38Speaker 2: you supplement with a free agent or two. But this
- 9:41Speaker 2: year's free agent classes is you know a lot of
- 9:46Speaker 2: older players deep into the you know, into their thirties
- 9:50Speaker 2: with some injury history. Because everybody else, you know, just
- 9:56Speaker 2: like even in the Broncos case, guys like Nick Benido,
- 10:00Speaker 2: Jonathan Cooper, Passer ten, they're not on the open market,
- 10:04Speaker 2: you know, they were resigned. So this class of free
- 10:07Speaker 2: agents reflects that there are an awful lot of teams
- 10:10Speaker 2: doing business that way.
- 10:12Speaker 1: How would you power rank the priority for the Broncos
- 10:14Speaker 1: on these players who are currently free agents Alex Singleton,
- 10:17Speaker 1: John Franklin, Myers, Jake One mcnellan.
- 10:21Speaker 2: McMillan's a free agent, so that's a different deal. They
- 10:24Speaker 2: have a lot more control there than they do with
- 10:26Speaker 2: the other guys. McMillan is a Bronco until someone else
- 10:30Speaker 2: forces the issue. So uh, that's not really you know,
- 10:35Speaker 2: he's going to get away type situation. And you know,
- 10:39Speaker 2: but I would say they they they want, they know
- 10:43Speaker 2: they need to do something at linebacker. You've got two
- 10:47Speaker 2: guys who started at least eight games last year at
- 10:50Speaker 2: one position, who are both free agents. So to me
- 10:53Speaker 2: that it's because it's multiple players. Linebacker would be the
- 10:58Speaker 2: priority in both the raft and free agency right now
- 11:01Speaker 2: looking around. I think Sean Payton Tuesday called it a
- 11:05Speaker 2: must position, and he called running back a must position
- 11:10Speaker 2: because Dobbins is a free agent.
- 11:12Speaker 1: What about JFM, though you didn't talk about Franklin Myers.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Well, you know they paid the other three guys. They
- 11:18Speaker 2: paid DJ Jones, they paid Malcolm Roach, they paid Zach Allen.
- 11:23Speaker 2: He can get more money elsewhere. If he wants to
- 11:25Speaker 2: be a Bronco, he has to take less.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Can you give us a little clarity on this? Livingston
- 11:30Speaker 3: Hire as the past defense coordinator, he leaves a DC
- 11:35Speaker 3: job at CU to go back to the pros. Is
- 11:37Speaker 3: it a money thing? Is it? Well, it's you.
- 11:40Speaker 2: What do you know? Probably a little of everything. I
- 11:44Speaker 2: think you know, the Broncos are pay well in the
- 11:48Speaker 2: NFL world, So there's that. And he knows Vance Joseph,
- 11:55Speaker 2: they've coached together. I think that's a lot of it too.
- 11:58Speaker 2: And I think, and I can't speak for him in
- 12:01Speaker 2: this case specifically on this, but I know an awful
- 12:04Speaker 2: lot of guys coaching in college who are looking to
- 12:07Speaker 2: get back in the NFL because the NIL situation is
- 12:11Speaker 2: wearing them out and they want it. Used to be
- 12:16Speaker 2: the college schedule was the normal schedule for a coach.
- 12:19Speaker 2: But now a lot of those guys are looking at
- 12:22Speaker 2: the NFL thinking, boy, I'd like, I'm sure like the
- 12:25Speaker 2: normal schedule of a of an NFL assistant. And I
- 12:29Speaker 2: think that's just where we're at right now.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Normal schedule, ninety hours a week. We want normal.
- 12:34Speaker 2: I'd like to give it. I'd like to get, you know,
- 12:36Speaker 2: dial it back to a normal schedule. So and I
- 12:39Speaker 2: think there's some a it's a great hire for the Broncos,
- 12:43Speaker 2: but he and VJ coached together two years with the
- 12:46Speaker 2: Bengals when Livingston was just starting his coaching career.
- 12:51Speaker 1: Jeff Leeweld ESPN dot coms with us every Thursday. Always
- 12:54Speaker 1: appreciate it, legging, thank you, Thanks Ellas, We'll see it.
