- 0:00Hey y'all, it's friendly. Welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:04So happy that y'all are joining me today.
- 0:06Happy hump day. We are midway through the week
- 0:09and I hope that this finds y'all in a great place.
- 0:13Today we're going to be in First Thessalonians chapter 3, verses
- 0:17one through 5. This passage is so rich.
- 0:21It has a lot of different touch points.
- 0:23We're going to talk about discernment.
- 0:25We're going to talk about spiritual wisdom and continue
- 0:29our conversation that we started yesterday on suffering and
- 0:33temptation. And we're even going to talk
- 0:34about leadership. So before I read the passage, I
- 0:38want to emphasize what struck me most.
- 0:41Paul does not operate off of emotion.
- 0:44He operates off of spirit LED wisdom.
- 0:47And I believe that's something we can all desperately learn
- 0:51from and really reflect on. So let's go ahead and get
- 0:55started in verse one. When we could bear it no longer,
- 1:01we decided that we would remain in Athens and send Timothy in
- 1:04our place. He is our beloved brother and
- 1:07coworker with God. In preaching the gospel, we knew
- 1:12he would strengthen your faith and encourage your hearts so
- 1:15that no one would be shaken by these persecutions.
- 1:19For you know that we were destined for this.
- 1:22In fact, when we were with you, we forewarned you.
- 1:26Suffering and persecution is coming.
- 1:29And so it has happened, as you well know.
- 1:33For this reason, when I could endure it no longer, I sent our
- 1:37brother to find out if your faith was still strong.
- 1:40For I was concerned that the tempter had somehow enticed you,
- 1:45and our labor would have been in vain.
- 1:49OK, going right into it, I want to talk about how clearly Paul,
- 1:55his deepest desire, one of his deepest desires, was to see the
- 2:00Thessalonians. His heart was truly invested in
- 2:03their faith, but instead of doing what he preferred, he
- 2:08chose what was wisest. It could have been easier
- 2:12emotionally to go in person to see them, but it was not the
- 2:16best decision strategically or safety wise for him or for them.
- 2:22So what did he do? He stayed put where he was in
- 2:26Athens and he sent Timothy. Now I think this is key.
- 2:31Just because Paul could not physically go did not mean that
- 2:36he just emotionally checked out. He did not withdraw or
- 2:39disengage. He didn't say, well, I tried and
- 2:43that's that. He found another way to build
- 2:46the Kingdom. And I think that speaks so
- 2:49loudly to missions and all of us in Our Calling because not
- 2:55everyone is called to physically go.
- 2:58We all have different gifts. There's different seasons and
- 3:02stages of life, different responsibilities.
- 3:06You might be raising a family. Maybe your job does not allow
- 3:10flexibility or that time sometimes finances are not going
- 3:15to align, but every believer is called to participate in the
- 3:20gospel advancing. I also want to talk about how
- 3:25prayer is not less than. Prayer is so powerful and I
- 3:31think sometimes in our heads we can elevate giving financially
- 3:36or a certain amount of money as being more powerful.
- 3:41But y'all, prayer moves heaven and it's something that all of
- 3:46us can do regardless of our income or the resources that we
- 3:50have at hand right now. Now notice how Paul literally
- 3:55sent his brother in Christ in his place.
- 3:58That is active investment. He wasn't necessarily giving a
- 4:02donation. He was sending forth someone who
- 4:06he trusted to mentor them and I want to bring a specific story
- 4:12from my life just for context so that y'all can kind of envision
- 4:17this. But recently I was planning on
- 4:20going on an extreme mission trip to the Himalayas and this was
- 4:25going to require long hiking days up to 12 miles backpacking
- 4:30with 50 LB packs and clearly intense fiscal demand.
- 4:36Now, around the same time that I had my first team call, I
- 4:40started having issues in my right hip and I got diagnosed
- 4:45with Bursitis, which is basically a fancy term for
- 4:49inflammation in your body. And it was already so painful
- 4:54before. I had started training for this
- 4:56trip and I knew it was going to take intense preparation.
- 5:01Now, I could have pushed through, I could have said no
- 5:04pain, no gain. That is the motto that I have
- 5:07always lived for. But I could have tried to prove
- 5:11something. But ultimately I had to realize
- 5:15I did not have peace about it. And I think the Lord was really
- 5:20just teaching me in that decision that discernment
- 5:24matters more than desire. Ultimately, I did not sense the
- 5:29Lord saying push through this. I sensed him saying not right
- 5:33now. And that doesn't imply never,
- 5:38just not now. And obedience sometimes looks
- 5:41like stepping back, not stepping forward.
- 5:45I can still support that team that I was going to be with.
- 5:48I can intercede. I can pray over them and pray
- 5:51for them as they prepare. This is why being Spirit driven
- 5:55matters though, because not every opportunity, even though
- 6:00it might have good intent and you might have a good desire for
- 6:04it, not every opportunity is God's assignment for you right
- 6:08then. So I want us to ask ourselves,
- 6:12do you genuinely ask the Holy Spirit to lead your decisions or
- 6:18are you just moving based on excitement and emotion or what
- 6:22feels right in the moment? I was having lunch with a friend
- 6:26a few months ago and was honestly telling her how
- 6:30overwhelmed I was by my schedule and she was just teaching me and
- 6:34telling me how she a while back had started inviting the Spirit
- 6:40in to create her own schedule. She started praying over each
- 6:45week asking God who she was meant to meet with for him to
- 6:50give, to give her specific people to reach out to and for
- 6:55wisdom on how to order her time. And I started doing that.
- 7:00And y'all, it has been such a game changer.
- 7:03I've watched the Lord first hand just rearrange things so
- 7:07perfectly. He has created space in my
- 7:10schedule. He has shifted plans and aligned
- 7:13conversations that I could never have aligned on my own.
- 7:19And it also made me think, if the Lord is the one who knows
- 7:24perfect timing and perfect plans, why was I not doing this
- 7:28earlier? Why was I not consulting him for
- 7:31everyday things like my schedule?
- 7:35So my encouragement to y'all is be spirit LED, not impulse LED.
- 7:42Now I also want to go into how Paul sends Timothy who is
- 7:47actually someone younger, but listen to how Paul describes
- 7:51him. He describes him as a Co worker
- 7:54and God service. He does not call him an
- 7:57assistant, his intern. He calls him a Co worker.
- 8:02We see in first Timothy 412. Paul tells Timothy not to let
- 8:07anyone look down on him because he is young, but to set an
- 8:10example in his speech. Conduct, faith, love and purity.
- 8:16Timothy, he may have been younger in age, but y'all, he
- 8:20was so mature in faith. He had courage like not a lot of
- 8:25people had at the time. He was faithful and he was
- 8:28trusted. So age is just a number
- 8:32spiritual depth. It comes from intimacy with God.
- 8:37I want us to think about this. You can be younger and you can
- 8:40be very spiritually sound, but on the flip, you can be older
- 8:46and you can be spiritually stagnant because wisdom comes
- 8:50from seeking the Lord. It comes in the quiet place,
- 8:55asking him to speak to you, reading his word consistently.
- 9:00So y'all, I just want us to consider this.
- 9:03Are there any ways that you are disqualifying yourself from
- 9:07being used by God? Maybe by thinking that you're
- 9:11too young, too unknown, are not influential enough.
- 9:15Maybe you came to faith later in life and you feel behind, but if
- 9:20God calls you, he equips you. So don't let insecurity silence
- 9:25your obedience. Also yesterday in the podcast I
- 9:31talked quite a bit about suffering, but Paul does not
- 9:36soften the message in these verses.
- 9:39He tells them that suffering is a part of our destiny.
- 9:42In John 1633, Jesus says in this world you will have trouble.
- 9:49In Acts 1422, we're told that we must go through many hardships
- 9:53to enter the Kingdom of heaven. So y'all, we don't follow Jesus
- 9:57to avoid suffering. We don't follow him for comfort
- 10:01just to gain salvation. I think that there is sometimes
- 10:07a misconception. There's a prosperity message
- 10:09that Christianity guarantees ease.
- 10:13But y'all, this is not the gospel.
- 10:15We are not built for comfort. We are made for commitment, and
- 10:20commitment is what produces Christlikeness.
- 10:23So you will face seasons of trial that is promised.
- 10:28You may be walking into one right now, you might be in one
- 10:32right now, or you might be walking out of one right now.
- 10:36But I want y'all to hear this clearly.
- 10:38Hardship is not a set back. It's actually a springboard.
- 10:43I sense the Lord tell me that in this quiet time.
- 10:46And I had to sit on that for a second, 'cause I was like, wow.
- 10:51It is a springboard into deeper dependence on Jesus, into
- 10:55greater intimacy with the Father, into refinement and
- 10:59pruning, into greater strength. James 1/2 through 4 tells us
- 11:06that suffering produces perseverance.
- 11:09We see in Romans 5 through through five that it gives us
- 11:13more character, which produces hope.
- 11:15Second Corinthians 1/3 through 7 talks about how it gives us
- 11:19comfort so that you can comfort and be more sensitive to others.
- 11:25Suffering is evidence that you're living for something
- 11:28eternal and that you're becoming more like Jesus now.
- 11:34Also, I want us to be alert, but to not be afraid.
- 11:39Y'all? Satan is patient.
- 11:41He's strategic, he's the tempter, and he is watching for
- 11:45vulnerable moments in your life to tempt you.
- 11:49Temptation itself is not sin, but it is the doorway into sin
- 11:55if you entertain it, if you give in.
- 11:58So we cannot be naive, but we can also not live anxious.
- 12:05First, Peter 57 reminds us to cast our anxieties on Him
- 12:10because He cares for us. So what do we do practically?
- 12:16We give any anxious thoughts to the Lord, and we ask the Holy
- 12:20Spirit daily. Every morning that you wake up,
- 12:24you ask Him to empower you to fight temptation, to combat sin.
- 12:31Because if you know that you're gonna face temptation and that
- 12:35you're gonna walk into vulnerability, you better gear
- 12:39up. This requires a staying in the
- 12:41Word, continually praying without ceasing, surrounding
- 12:45yourselves with believers who sharpen you and who challenge
- 12:49you. Because if you were heading into
- 12:52battle, you would not skip the preparation.
- 12:56We're not meant to live paranoid.
- 12:58We're meant to live prepared. So stay anchored in the truth
- 13:02and stay surrendered to the One who can guard you and protect
- 13:06you. Now, to round it out, I want to
- 13:09talk about how Paul is just such a faithful, spiritual father,
- 13:14and he's a leader that loves us enough to prepare us.
- 13:18He doesn't just say comforting things that we always want to
- 13:23hear. He is strengthening the church
- 13:26with truth. He's preparing them for the
- 13:28hardship that they're going to face, but he affirms their
- 13:32calling. And that is how you do it with
- 13:34love, because real love prepares people to stand firm.
- 13:38He wants them to be victorious in Christ, not fragile in the
- 13:43culture around them. And that should be our heart
- 13:46too. So let us look to Paul's
- 13:49example. Let us imitate how he is a
- 13:52leader. And let us be like that for
- 13:54others all around us today. Let's go ahead and pray.
- 13:59Dear Father, thank you for being a God who leads us with wisdom.
- 14:06Would you teach us to value discernment over desire and make
- 14:11us more sensitive to your Spirit so that we do not move ahead of
- 14:15you, but that we don't fall behind?
- 14:19Keep us in step with You. May we have courage like
- 14:23Timothy. Remove any insecurities and
- 14:26remind us of Our Calling. That you equip us.
- 14:29You prepare us for what you have in store.
- 14:33Would you make us more committed?
- 14:35Not seeking comfort? Help us to stay alert, but not
- 14:39anxious, steadfast and overflowing with hope.
- 14:47Lord, we want to stand firm. We want to live worthy of the
- 14:50gospel and of Our Calling. We pray this in Jesus name,
- 14:54Amen. OK, well that was a longer 1.
- 14:57I feel like there were so many things to talk about, but I'm
- 15:00praying that y'all can just learn some things and be
- 15:04encouraged. Go out, be a leader for those
- 15:06around you and I will see y'all on the next episode.
