- 0:01Hey everybody, welcome to the good morning from the Chicken
- 0:04Coop podcast. My name is Kim Johnson and I am
- 0:07a mastermindset, coach, creative strategist, and also happened to
- 0:10be a farmer. This is my chicken coop and I
- 0:12come out here every day to record a podcast to teach
- 0:16distinctions, possibilities, new ways of thinking, and just bring
- 0:20some joy. Into the.
- 0:21World. So welcome to the coop and let's
- 0:23start your day off in a fantastic way.
- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning. We're actually out walking
- 0:29around checking the fig trees while I'm talking to you pulling
- 0:32off some figs that are left that the chickens haven't gotten down
- 0:36the bottom while the top still is ripening up.
- 0:39And it's pretty amazing how different the fig trees are this
- 0:44year than they have been in the last three years.
- 0:48So when we planted these trees, they were fairly small.
- 0:53We didn't know if they were going to produce.
- 0:55One of them produced a little tiny bit, but it was gone
- 0:58instantaneously with the birds and whatnot.
- 1:01And, you know, they just disappear.
- 1:03It's, it's just like our blueberries.
- 1:05Our blueberries are not, you know, producing anything again
- 1:08this year. Super frustrating.
- 1:11I think we're on year 4 with them, but there was a someone
- 1:17told my husband that if you burn the bushes to the ground, they
- 1:20will come back up even stronger. It was a technique that Native
- 1:24Americans used. It didn't work, and they're
- 1:29still struggling, but the figs really, really took off this
- 1:33year. And a big part of that, I
- 1:36believe, is that I changed my strategy of how much I was
- 1:39fertilizing them. And I was, you know, focused on
- 1:42making sure they had enough water, Not just water from like,
- 1:46rain, but water like going over and watering them.
- 1:49And it made a massive, massive difference.
- 1:52And even though they're established and whatnot, if you
- 1:55really want to have the right kind of production, you have to
- 1:59make sure you have the right kind of conditions.
- 2:02Doesn't that sound familiar for us as human beings, too?
- 2:05So I have made it a point to focus on the figs, and the figs
- 2:10have exploded. And that focus has been taking
- 2:13place since last fall and really like putting on the compost from
- 2:20the chicken coop. So one of the things that we do
- 2:23all the time is take the straw that we use in the chicken coop
- 2:26every day. Like, you know, it's in there
- 2:28and of course they free range, so they're only in there
- 2:31overnight, but there's still a ton of straw that's on that
- 2:35floor. So when there's poop, it goes
- 2:37into the straw. So I have the system where I,
- 2:40you know, every two weeks I pull all the straw out of the coop
- 2:43and I put it around the coop in the run and that then it has
- 2:47time to break down. They dig through it.
- 2:49For some reason, they get very excited about this process.
- 2:52I put new straw inside and the whole cycle starts all over
- 2:55again. And then I can use that, that
- 2:58composted yummy rich dirt over there and I can put that around
- 3:03things in the spring. So when you walk out to the
- 3:07chicken coop, it's a very thick padded space of straw and broken
- 3:11down earth and everything else. And then it's not considered
- 3:16hot, meaning it's going to burn something.
- 3:18It's just ready to go. So I pack the trees around it.
- 3:21Now this gets very tricky because the chickens think this
- 3:24also is very exciting because they want to throw it around
- 3:28everywhere and keep digging through it.
- 3:29So you can pack it around the trees and they're going to throw
- 3:33it everywhere. But I've learned that eventually
- 3:36they get bored and they move on and they look for something
- 3:38else. But they gardening with
- 3:40chickens, it's a thing. It's like a it's, it's a hard
- 3:43thing to do, but the benefits far outweigh all the problems.
- 3:49So anyway, back to the figs. So I really focused on it and I
- 3:53also, my son has a fish tank and every time that fish tank water
- 3:59gets changed, it's a really large fish tank.
- 4:01I think it's 120 gallons. He fills up the wagon with it
- 4:05for me and I can take that and use that fish water to water
- 4:10them again, another source of nutrients.
- 4:12And then I've also got regular the stuff that I use for
- 4:17fertilizer, which is organic fish.
- 4:19It's called fish fertilizer. You can get it at Home Depot or
- 4:22Lowe's. Not a plug for them, just
- 4:24telling you what I'm using. And I put that on there.
- 4:26Now the, the abundance of figs that we have had this year is I,
- 4:32I see it as the ramping up of what will be next year.
- 4:35Astonishing. And maybe it had a little bit to
- 4:38do with the cold winter also, cuz it got very cold.
- 4:41And maybe they like having it be a little colder and then all of
- 4:43a sudden they take off even more.
- 4:46I don't know, but it's hard to tell because there's like little
- 4:50fractional changes that happened and not that I intended, but
- 4:54they happened. But in any event, the abundance
- 4:56is huge. So what's exciting about this is
- 4:59recognizing that small changes with consistency work for the
- 5:04plants and how similar we are. Small changes with consistency
- 5:12make massive differences. So you have to ask yourself,
- 5:15what small changes can I or have I made that are making a big
- 5:20difference and that staying consistent with them does?
- 5:24So I always come back to it can be done starting right now,
- 5:29today. You can make a small change.
- 5:31You can say, OK, I'm not going to have any chocolate today or
- 5:35I'm going to cut back on the number of pieces of chocolate I
- 5:39eat today. Or I'm going to do instead of
- 5:43doing 3000 steps in a day, I'm going to do 4000 steps in a day
- 5:48because guess what? Those add up over time.
- 5:50Just like shooting this podcast has always added up.
- 5:53I do it one day, it turns into 30, it turns into 90 and before
- 5:58you know it, we're well into our fourth year and Oh my gosh, we
- 6:03have thousands of over thousands episode.
- 6:06I mean, that's crazy when you think about it, but just think
- 6:10about how how powerful those little changes are and what
- 6:14difference they can make in your life, and then you can bloom
- 6:16like figs. All right, my friends, I hope.
- 6:18You. Have a blessed day and I'll see
- 6:20you tomorrow. Bye.
