- 0:07The New York Mets faced the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for the annual Mayor's Trophy
- 0:10Game on June 14, 1976. The Mayor's Trophy Game was an annual in-season exhibition game
- 0:16in New York City. It was originally played between the New York Yankees and the New York
- 0:20Giants and occasionally the Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1950s. The series was revived in 1963
- 0:26when the New York Mets became the Yankees' new opponent. The games were primarily played
- 0:29to benefit Samlott Baseball in New York City. This audio recording is from the Yankees
- 0:33Radio Network featuring announcers Phil Rizzuto, Frank Messer, and Bill White.
- 1:00Two fields in the first 11 of May when the Yankees threw the Yankees!
- 1:10Free star Brody
- 1:21what brought him to the major leagues probably a year maybe two years ahead of schedule.
- 1:26He did he pitched very well in this mayor's trophy game and he was put on the major league
- 1:30roster he's never been down in the minor league since.
- 1:33You know this the Yankees take the field here this game is a good barometer how a kid can
- 1:37take pressure because the fans are just about evenly divided.
- 1:42You have about 50 percent left fan 50 percent Yankee fan and you get those kind of reactions
- 1:49when you have a big crowd reacting like that puts a lot of pressure on kids if they react
- 1:54on the positive side you've got a pretty good baseball player.
- 1:57Well the Yankees are out on the field and right now Bob Shepard asking everybody to
- 2:02stand for the playing of the nice solanthem.

- 8:31The Yankees are out on the field and right now they're playing the nice solanthem.
- 8:52Joe Torrey has a 3-0-6 batting average. Four doubles, one triple, four home runs, 11 runs batted in.
- 9:08Right hand hitter and Gidry's pitch is over at the knees. Strike one is called.
- 9:12Good to see Hank Soar down there again. Came out of retirement for this ball game tonight.
- 9:190-1 pitch, inside. One ball, one strike.
- 9:30Ron Gidry rocks back. The kick out of the left hander's pitch. Line drive right over Gidry's head.
- 9:35Base hit. Gidry did well to duck that one.
- 9:41Line are just about head high and Gidry got his head down or he would have had quite a lump. Well hit ball.
- 9:49And now the hand will go up for Dave Kingman.
- 10:01They call him Sky King. He's batting 240. He has hit 22 home runs more than any other man in the major leagues.
- 10:07He has 48 runs batted in. He also leads the Mets in runs scored with 38 and in base hits with 59.
- 10:16Strong right hand batter, Dave Kingman.
- 10:22Torrey down at first base. May is not holding him on and a curve is cut out in this strike one.
- 10:34Dave Kingman. 6'6", 210 pounds. He swings and misses. The curve strike two.
- 10:45This guy's having quite a year, Bill. Yes he is. A lot of home runs. 48 runs batted in.
- 10:54He reaches out for a curve. It's in the air to shallow center field. That one may drop in for the base hit. No! Rivers gets there!
- 11:01Nicky Rivers had a long way to come from deep left center field and he made a running catch down below his knees to retire the side.
- 11:09No runs to hit the man who's left at the end of the top half of the first to score. The Mets nothing and the Yankees are coming to bat.
- 11:17I want a beer that's like no other beer. I'm Schaefer's people. I want flavor that won't disappear. I'm Schaefer's people.
- 11:31Consistency makes a great beer and Schaefer's consistently great tasting because Schaefer's brewed the old world way.
- 11:37Croisining we call it. Since 1842, Croisining, the extra step of brewing twice has kept Schaefer consistently fresh and crisp, consistently great tasting beer after Schaefer beer.
- 11:48I want a beer that's like no other beer. I'm Schaefer's people. A Schaefer's beer goes straight to your thirst. Your last one tastes as good as your birth.
- 12:02Go out and get a Schaefer and be Schaefer's people too. Go out and get a Schaefer and be Schaefer's people too.
- 12:14F&M Schaefer Brewing Company, New York, New York.
- 12:18The Yankees will journey to Minnesota to play the Minnesota Twins tomorrow night. They'll use Doc Ellis who's won five and lost four.
- 12:27He'll go against Pete Redfern who's won two. Then on Wednesday night it should be Ed Figueroa for the Yankees against Bill Singer for the Minnesota Twins.
- 12:37The LeBets have already made a change. They've got a new right fielder, Mike Vail. They let their big man Dave Kingman get one shot at Ron Guidry.
- 12:45And Kingman's out and Vail is out of right field. Unser's in center field. And John Milner out and left for the New York Mets.
- 12:53Steger, Harrelson, Mian and Corey around the infield. Jay Cleven catching.
- 12:59And Ken Sanders is on the mound. Now Sanders is no stranger to the Yankees.
- 13:07Pitched against them with the Milwaukee Brewers and also the Cleveland Indians I believe.
- 13:13Right. Sanders right-hander.
- 13:20Complets his warm-up throws to Jay Cleven.
- 13:26And since we've got a chance right now we'll watch Mickey Rivers as he leads off. We'll tell you more about Gene Michael being added to the Yankee coaching staff.
- 13:32Primarily to work with the infielders.
- 13:39Mickey Rivers left-hand batter against right-hander Ken Sanders.
- 13:46Rivers swings and misses. Strike one.
- 13:51Sanders has been up with Kansas City, with Boston, with Oakland.
- 13:55And he builds on you with Milwaukee, with Minnesota, and with Cleveland.
- 14:01Pitched to Mickey, pops it up as he reached for an outside pitch. And Sanders, the pitcher, is calling. Gives way now to his third baseman.
- 14:08And there to make the catch is Roy Steger.
- 14:12So Rivers is retired on a pop-up to Steger right in front of the mound, between the mound and home plate.
- 14:19And now Elliott Maddox. And he should get a good reception. I know it'll make him feel good.
- 14:31Elliott Maddox playing his first game in one year and one day.
- 14:40Elliott has been working out, first of all, down in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and more recently up here in New York.
- 14:50He takes a pitch low and away, ball one.
- 14:54Elliott worked out under the supervision of former Heisman Trophy winner Hopalong Cassidy.
- 15:021-0 pitch. Swing and a miss. He had a good rip. Didn't find it.
- 15:13Bill, I told you the Yankees have won the last two Mayor's Trophy games, both by 9 to 4 scores.
- 15:18The Yankees have won 5 of the last 6. Pitch is outside. Two balls and one strike to Maddox.
- 15:23You can see what the layoff's done for Elliott Frankmester. He's holding his bat a lot higher and more away from his body than he did when he was hitting well for the Yanks.
- 15:31He's got it up a little bit high, a little bit too high, and a little bit too far back, I think.
- 15:37He fouls this one straight down off the shin guards of the catcher, Jay Clevin.
- 15:42Of course, all Elliott has to do is go back and look at the videotapes of himself hitting when he was hitting well, and I'm sure he'll correct that.
- 15:49Elliott told me a few days ago, he said, of course, he's taking a lot of batting practice, but he said it's nothing like being in a ball game.
- 15:55That's right.
- 15:58Sanders ready with the 2-2 pitch to him, and he comes inside with an off-speed pitch, 3-2.
- 16:04That's where he might be in a little bit of trouble. He moves slowly on that pitch, evidently that knee giving him...still, he's not as mobile as he'd like to be.
- 16:14Playoff pitching out of Maddox. Fastball is low and away, ball for Maddox is on.
- 16:21Now Maddox goes down to first base. Of course, he is wearing a brace on the injured right knee.
- 16:28Joe Torrey comes in to hold him on on the inside corner, and Lou Pinella is the batter. Lou is the Yankees' designated hitter tonight.
- 16:36Pinella is batting 298, 8 doubles, 4 triples, 2 home runs, and 18 runs batted in.
- 16:46Maddox at first, one away. The kick and the pitch, low and away for a ball.
- 16:51You have to wonder, Bill, if Pinella should hit a ground ball and Maddox has to slide in to break up a double play if he would show any disinclination to do it.
- 16:59Well, in this situation, exhibition game, I would hope that he would be disinclined to do it.
- 17:05He draws a lob throw over at first base.
- 17:11The Mets have John Miller in left, Dell Unsor in center, and Mike Vail in right. Vail is coming off an injury.
- 17:18Pitch is hit in the air to shallow right field, back goes Neon.
- 17:22The second baseman is under it and makes a basket catch, belt high.
- 17:29Maddox back in at first base. Ellie Howard goes out to say a word or two to him.
- 17:34Dick Hauser, of course, coaches over at third for the Yankees.
- 17:37And with two down and a runner on, the batter is Carlos May.
- 17:42Carlos, left-hand hitter, and Carlos May was your guest in the on-deck circle tonight, Bill.
- 17:46And you know, I didn't know he was playing first base. I talked about him being able to play left field, first base, be the designated hitter, but they got him pencil-ended first.
- 17:56First pitch to him, over but low, ball one.
- 17:59Made a good scoop on the throw from Mason.
- 18:02When Mason threw out Felix, was it Felix Beyond? Yeah, ball was in the dirt and May just dug it out.
- 18:09As Carlos has played first base in his career with the White Sox, he chokes well up on the bat handle.
- 18:17But for better bat control or is that the result of losing part of his life?
- 18:20No, better bat control. I think Carlos has always hit that way. Choked up, he uses a big bat, just slaps it up the middle most of the time.
- 18:28Sanders delivers, breaking ball is over at the knees, and the count evens one and one.
- 18:38On to Minnesota for the Yankees following this game.
- 18:42Two games with the Thwins, tomorrow night and Wednesday night. Three-night games and a Sunday afternoon clash with the White Sox.
- 18:49Changeout is high and away.
- 19:01Two balls and a strike to Carlos May.
- 19:05May is hitting 242 and he swings and misses, strike two.
- 19:10As a Yankee, May is hitting 311.
- 19:13Brought over a rather meager batting average from the White Sox who is overall hitting his 242 with five doubles, one home run and 12 runs batted in.
- 19:27Two ball, two strike pitch will be coming. Maddox leads it first and the pitch is golf fouled outside of first.
- 19:34And...
- 19:36Grabbed by a fan down past the Yankee dugout.
- 19:40One of the things Carlos May talked about, Frank Messer, was the spirit on this Yankee ball club.
- 19:46That it's a lot better than the one he left.
- 19:49Of course, the player is going to say that anyway, but he's really been impressed by the way the Yankees have played and by the way they get along.
- 19:55Very good. That means a lot too. There goes Maddox. The pitch is hit on the ground, up the middle, base hit.
- 20:01Maddox around second will go to third as the center fielder runs it, comes in to field the ball and throws in to second.
- 20:06Oh, Carlos May ripped one right back through the middle.
- 20:10More importantly though, you're watching Maddox off and running and he showed very little effects of that damage right knee.
- 20:17He made the turn at second base, cut the bag, made a short turn, got on the third base and didn't limp too much.
- 20:22Very good, Bill. You know, Elliott's been running a lot and running in a straight line or running in circles.
- 20:28He has been a little leery to make the sharp cuts and of course I can understand that.
- 20:33Well, he made that one. I don't think he could cut it any closer. A lot of guys went out around shortstop.
- 20:37He made a good cut there at second base.
- 20:39Here's Fran Healy, right hand hitting catcher and he takes a strike over the outside corner.
- 20:44Healy has not had much opportunity to play this year. He's batting 158.
- 20:51He's been up only 38 times with six singles.
- 20:55Runners first and third two down. Sanders offers breaking ball hit on the ground at shortstop.
- 20:59Halston is up, goes the short route to Neon at second and that retires the side.
- 21:04May is forced but the Yankees no runs, one hit, two left. End of one. It's the Muts nothing and the Yankees nothing.
- 21:107-8-2-6-thousand. 7-8-2-6-thousand.
- 21:13Lincoln Salings Bank.
- 21:14Retirement department, please.
- 21:15Those lines are busy, sir. Is this about an individual retirement account?
- 21:19Yes. Is that ad for real?
- 21:20Yes, sir. If you're not already covered by a pension plan, you can save 15 percent of your income up to $1,500 a year in a Lincoln retirement account.
- 21:28And not pay any taxes on it?
- 21:30No taxes until you retire, not even on the interest. How old are you?
- 21:3427. How old are you?
- 21:35Let's see, 27. If you save $1,500 a year, okay?
- 21:39Well, okay.
- 21:40At our current rate of 7.75 percent, at 65 you'll have $373,170.
- 21:47Oh, wow. Are you members of the FDIC?
- 21:50Yes. And if you withdraw it quarterly over 10 years, the extra interest brings it to well over half a million dollars.
- 21:56Half a million? Guaranteed?
- 21:58Well, rates change, but the Lincoln guarantees their highest available interest at all times.
- 22:03What about my Social Security?
- 22:05Oh, that'll be a fringe benefit.
- 22:07What about dinner tonight?
- 22:09Lincoln Savings Bank.
- 22:107-8-2-6-thousand-7-8.
- 22:16Oh, as Frank Mester mentioned earlier, Gene Michael, one of the most popular Yankees.
- 22:21In recent years, will be coming back. He'll be a coach on Billy Martin staff.
- 22:26He'll join Yogi Berra, Ellie Howard, Bob Lemon, and Dick Hauser.
- 22:30And Michael will join the team tomorrow in Minnesota.
- 22:33He'll spend most of the season with the Yankees, handling normal coaching assignments and working with the infielders.
- 22:40And the stick will also spend a few days with Yankee Farm teams, working with infield prospects and assisting their development in the organization.
- 22:49Dick still lives over in Norwood, New Jersey, and he was honored by a Gene Michael day here at the stadium.
- 22:53One of the things that impressed me about that, Frank, was that Gene wanted nothing at all.
- 22:57He simply wanted the money to go for a scholarship for deserving athletes.
- 23:02Very good.
- 23:04All right, we go to the top half of the second inning, and John Milner left-hand-hitting left fielder steps in.
- 23:11He takes a low curve from Gittery, ball one. Ron comes back with a fastball. It's fouled out of play on the third-base side.
- 23:18You know, Bill White, as I sit here and look at this crowd, as excited as they are, as you said, about 50-50 Yankee and Met fans,
- 23:24can't help but think what a boon interleague play would be.
- 23:28Curve comes in high.
- 23:30You better convince Walrommalea of that, then.
- 23:34I've always been an advocate of it.
- 23:38This pitch is taken outside, but not like the last pitch. The curve was not high, as the strike is up on the board.
- 23:43I think they'll eventually get the interleague play.
- 23:47So we'll say this is 2-2, and it's ripped to right field, base hit.
- 23:50So Milner picks up base hit number two for the Mets.
- 23:54Elliott Maddox fires back to the infield. Nothing wrong with Elliott's arm.
- 24:00Milner is on, and Roy Steger will be the batter.
- 24:04Roy will take down the Mets.
- 24:10You can't help but think you have such great natural rivals, such as the Yankees and the Mets.
- 24:15I'm sure the Cubs and the White Sox would be.
- 24:19Phillies and the Orioles, very close.
- 24:23How about the Oakland A's and the San Francisco Giants, and the Dodgers and the Angels?
- 24:28First pitch to the right-hand-hitting Steger is in for a called strike.
- 24:32Chicago and Chicago. Right.
- 24:36Kansas City, St. Louis? Yes, that would be a good one.
- 24:43Montreal and Toronto.
- 24:46Hold one pitch, bouncing ball up the middle. Mason comes in, has it behind the mound, throws the second for one, back to first no.
- 24:55Mason, field at the high hopper between second base and the mound, underhanded it to Sandy Alomar for the force at second base on Milner.
- 25:03Steger beat the bouncing throw to first base.
- 25:07It was not a double play ball by any manner of means.
- 25:11So the Yankees cut down the lead runner, and Del Unser will step in.
- 25:15Del Unser is batting 224, nine doubles, one triple, four home runs, and 22 runs batted in.
- 25:25He has played in both leagues.
- 25:30First pitch to him, swung on, hit deep to right field, this one is way back.
- 25:36Maddox going back to the track, back to the wall, and he goes up the ball, is off the top of the wall, or off his glove.
- 25:41The ball is in play. On his way to third base as Steger is held up there.
- 25:45In the second base goes Unser, and that will be a two-base hit.
- 25:50Now Joe Frazier, the Mets manager, is going to come out and ask the home plate umpire, Hank Soar, if that ball might not have hit something over the top of the fence and come back.
- 25:59You know, Frank, I think a fan got his hand down over that fence and just flipped that ball out of the glove of Maddox.
- 26:04LA looked like he had a play on the ball, and he was there, leaped up, all of a sudden the ball bounces out of something, and I believe the fan did get his hand down there.
- 26:13But on the other hand, the umpire, well, he wouldn't call him out for interference, since this is Yankees home park.
- 26:20But Maddox had a shot at that ball.
- 26:23And I believe either he was, or the ball was touched by somebody out there other than Maddox.
- 26:29Well, Frazier is discussing the point now with first base umpire, Satch Davidson, of the National League.
- 26:37I think the umpire got the last word. He put his nose right up in Joe's face.
- 26:43Frazier now is looking out to his base runner at second, Dell Unser, as he walks back to the dugout.
- 26:51So it goes as a two-base hit, and the Mets have runners at second and third.
- 26:55One out, and the batter will be Jay Cleven, the catcher.
- 27:03We told you Cleven was called up in the minor leagues for this ball game. He's 26 years old.
- 27:09And he takes the ball.
- 27:12He's been catching at Tidewater.
- 27:16Right-hand hitter, fairly deep in the box, and the pitch is looped out into right field. That's going to be a base hit and drive-in two runs.
- 27:22Maddox is up with it, makes his throw to second base, and the Mets lead by a score of two to nothing.
- 27:32Well, Jay Cleven, a right-hand hitter, went with the pitch and looped it into right for a single and two RBIs.
- 27:38Right now, we'll pause 15 seconds for station identification on the New York Yankee Home of Champions Radio Network.
- 27:44WMCA, Straus Communications in New York.
- 27:48This is Mel Allen. Don't ship a package with an air freight company. Ship it with an air freight system.
- 27:55Emory, the shortest distance between two points.
- 27:59All right, here we go with the pitcher, Ken Sanders batting. Right-hand hitter up there at a button, and he takes high, ball one.
- 28:11The Mets declined the option of using a designated hitter, so Sanders, the pitcher, is batting, and of course, in the number nine spot.
- 28:20Down at first base is Cleven. There's one away.
- 28:24That is, in on the grass at third, he squares the button, butts it down, the first baseline foul.
- 28:37We were talking earlier about the young man Cleven called up from triple-A ball to catch this game, and he has driven in the game's first two runs.
- 28:45The Mets lead two-nothing.
- 28:48One ball and one strike on Ken Sanders. The pitch to him, he squares and butts it back toward the mound.
- 28:52Gidry is happy. He has a play at second. He goes there to Mason out, back to first, and a good scoop by Carlos May. It's a double play.
- 29:00A 1-6-3 double play as Carlos May had to backhand the ball out of the dirt.
- 29:05The Mets get two runs out of three hits. There were no errors, and nobody left.
- 29:09At the end of one-and-a-half innings, it's the Mets two and the Yankees nothing.
- 29:14If you're looking for a luxury car that's an excellent investment when you buy and when you sell, then this is the year to say yes to Cordova, the most successful new model Chrysler ever introduced.
- 29:43And now Cordova's even got the best resale value.
- 29:46Yes, according to Automotive Market Report national averages, of all one-year-old midsize personal luxury cars, Cordova returns the greatest percentage of your investment based on original sticker price.
- 29:58Yes, yes, it's the year to say yes at your Chrysler Plymouth dealer.
- 30:05Be the men who say yes at your local Chrysler Plymouth dealer today.
- 30:17Well, the Mets have made a couple of defensive changes as we go to the bottom of the second here. They lead 2-0.
- 30:22They've got a new left fielder, Bruce Boyclair, and the new center fielder, Leon Brown.
- 30:31Boyclair will bat fifth in Milner's spot, and Brown will bat seventh in the spot vacated by Dell Unser.
- 30:47Of course, the Mets skipper can flip-flop those should he wish, I suppose, though, Frank. They'll bat for the guys whose place they took.
- 30:54I would presume they usually do that in an exhibition game?
- 30:58Yes, Bob Shepard, Justin Mestin.
- 31:01Boyclair batting fifth, Brown seventh.
- 31:05And Otto Velaz will step in to lead off of the Yankees. Velaz playing at third base tonight. He has played there before.
- 31:11He is batting 2-22 on the season, one double, one home run, three runs batted in. And he is a right-hand hitter.
- 31:20Hey, Hank Aaron just hit his third home run of the year with two on.
- 31:25Milwaukee leads California 7-1. Brewers batting bottom of the fifth.
- 31:31How many is that for Aaron now, 748?
- 31:3348 is right.
- 31:35Alright, the first pitch to Velaz. Now low for a ball. Breaking pitch from the right-hander Sanders.
- 31:43They play Velaz pretty much up the middle with a center fielder. Brown maybe a step toward left.
- 31:491-0 delivery. Cut on and bow slowly to the left side. Cutting in front of the shortstop is the third baseman Staker. He throws in time.
- 31:56Victoria first.
- 31:59Velaz is out one away and Sandy Alomar will come on as a left-hand hitter.
- 32:04Alomar's switch hitter is batting 2-19. He is a better hitter right-handed than left.
- 32:17Kerry Deneen is on deck.
- 32:22The shortstop, Harrelson Shades, towards second base on Alomar. The kick and the pitch. Foul back right below us.
- 32:32Right fielder Mike Vail broke over toward the corner as Alomar fouled that pitch back.
- 32:43So both right fielders tonight coming off injuries. Elliot Maddox and Mike Vail.
- 32:48The one strike pitch to Alomar. Hit in the air to left center. Moving over forward is the center fielder Leon Brown.
- 32:53He's under it and he makes the catch. There are two down.
- 33:00Mike Vail suffered a dislocated right foot in a mid-February basketball game. He has been on the Mets disabled list all season.
- 33:08So he is playing right field for the Mets and Elliot Maddox, who is recovering from knee surgery, is playing right field for the Yankees.
- 33:17Here is Kerry Deneen. Left hand batter. Deneen has been up seven times with two hits.
- 33:26Two outs in the first pitch. Inside.
- 33:30One of Deneen's two hits won a ball game for the Yankees the same day he was called up from Syracuse of the International League.
- 33:38Sanders rocks and offers. And overhand curve is fouled back off the plate umpire.
- 33:43Hank Soar. One ball and one strike.
- 33:47I believe Soar was the roving assignment umpire in the American League last year and thought he was retired, but it turned out he umpired better than 60 ball games.
- 33:56They might use him again this year, the way everybody is complaining.
- 34:00Never know.
- 34:02One group doesn't get along too well with the Cleveland Indians. They might break that group up, though I doubt it.
- 34:08Tough to win fighting the umpires. They do the best they can always.
- 34:11Yes, you're right, Bill. They certainly do.
- 34:15One ball, one strike, pitch to Deneen. Curve is low. Ball two. Two and one.
- 34:22Frank Robinson's team had I think 16 ejections by one umpiring crew this year.
- 34:31Now the 2-1 pitch coming. It is popped up on the right side. Circling under it is the second baseman, Mian. He makes the catch on the skin of the infield to retire the side.
- 34:41The Yankees go in order and at the end of two it's the Mets two and the Yankees nothing.
- 34:45Who's on first in mozzarella and ricotta?
- 34:47Pallio, that's who. Pallio is the first in mozzarella and ricotta cheese because Pallio is the last word in quality and purity.
- 34:54Flavor two, because the authentic Italian taste of Pallio mozzarella and ricotta makes a delicious difference in dishes Italiano.
- 35:01Take the guesswork out of cooking Italian style. Go with the best sellers in Italian soft cheese.
- 35:06Creamy smooth Pallio ricotta and easy slicing fast melting Pallio mozzarella. At your favorite markets now.
- 35:12Press the no, Pallio. If all you need is money come on in to HFC.

- 35:46I'd like to remind you of some special days here at the stadium. The first will be on the 26th of this month.
- 35:55Yankees will be playing the Milwaukee Brewers and it'll be shirt day.
- 35:59If you're 14 and under and buy a ticket you'll get a t-shirt with the Yankee logo on it on the 26th of this month.
- 36:05And you'll get a chance to see Hank Aaron and the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 36:08On July 11th the Chicago White Sox will be here and it'll be jacket day here at the stadium.
- 36:14Same rules apply. Then on August 22nd, bat day, that's always a big day and the California Angels will be in.
- 36:21Okay, Bill, but Harrelson is the batter and he takes high and inside, ball one.
- 36:26Harrelson leading off the first inning for the Mets, lined up to Otto Velez at third, a nice play by Velez.
- 36:34Next pitch, hit on the ground, fouled outside at third.
- 36:45A lot of activity in the stands. Some folks may still be coming in.
- 36:49And as Bill White told you earlier, there is a very fine crowd on hand for the ballgame.
- 36:55Now the 1-1 pitch to Bud Harrelson, fouled back upstairs.
- 37:00Over on the right side, and it's one ball and two strikes.
- 37:04Elliott Maddox in right field plays very shallow on Bud Harrelson.
- 37:08Rivers, shallow, straight away in center.
- 37:11Deneen, straight away and left. The infield shades him just a bit on the third base side.
- 37:161-2 pitch from Guidry. Fast ball is lined and knocked down but not handled by Velez.
- 37:21Picked up by Mason, his throw is safe.
- 37:24Mason's throw pulled Carlos May off the bag to the right field side.
- 37:29Mason had just a little more time, I think, than he realized to set up.
- 37:35An off-balance throw, as he was not expecting the ball, was knocked down by Velez.
- 37:40And his throw pulled Carlos May off. It will be a base hit for Harrelson.
- 37:44And that is the fifth hit for the Mets.
- 37:49He hit that ball just like he did the one Velez caught this time. It kicked right off his glove.
- 37:56Felix Mian steps in.
- 37:59Second baseman ratted out to Mason at short his first time up.
- 38:03He swings a line for him to the right side, base hit in the right field.
- 38:07Harrelson down to second base, stops.
- 38:09As Maddox by an arm gets the ball back to the infield.
- 38:13No back-to-back singles.
- 38:16And the Mets are threatening again with runners at first and second, nobody out.
- 38:21The batter is Joe Torre, who's singled in the first inning.
- 38:26The Mets are leading in the ball game by a score of 2-0. They now have six hits off left-hander Ron Guidry.
- 38:37Guidry looks down to Fran Healy for his sign, starts for stretch, sets below the belt, and his pitch a fastball low.
- 38:56And this pitch is hit high in the air to straightaway left field.
- 39:00Deneen sets up under it. Harrelson is tagged to second. Deneen makes the catch. Harrelson makes him throw, but a perfect throw to Velez.
- 39:07And Harrelson goes back.
- 39:15Right-hander Jim Beatty is throwing in the Yankee ball then. He was called up from Syracuse for this ball game.
- 39:25And now Mike Vail batting for the first time this year.
- 39:32Runners at first and second one out. Vail is a right-hand hitter. He replaced Kingman after Sky King had one time at bat.
- 39:40And fly it out to Maddox who made a running, or rather to Rivers who made a running catch in center.
- 39:46Guidry deals. Fastball inside.
- 39:55Vail suffering an off-season accident in a basketball game.
- 40:01Swings on this one, fouls it back and into the mezzanine just off to our right.
- 40:13I recall this kid Vail. Pretty good season last year.
- 40:25He steps out and time is called for him.
- 40:30But only Guidry went to his mouth with his hand because Hank Soar signifies a ball on a strike.
- 40:36Two on one gone. The pitcher curve is lined and caught by Alomar. He flips it to Mason for the double play.
- 40:42Sandy Alomar juggled that ball. Caught it in his gloved hand, lost it, caught it again in his right hand and then just flipped it to Jim Mason for the double play on Harrelson.
- 40:53No runs, two hits, one left. And in the middle of the third it's the Mets two and the Yankees nothing.
- 41:00I want a beer like no other beer. Unshapered people. I want flavor that won't disappear. Unshapered people.
- 41:12Consistency makes a great beer and Shaper's consistently great tasting every single time because Shaper's brewed the old world way.
- 41:20In 1842, the extra step of brewing twice has kept Shaper consistently fresh and crisp, consistently great tasting beer after Shaper beer.
- 41:31I want a beer like no other beer. Unshapered people. I want flavor that won't disappear. Unshapered people.
- 41:42Shaper beer goes straight to your thirst. Your last one taste the joy of your first. Go out and get a Shaper, empty shards of unshapered people.
- 41:57F&M Shaper Brewing Company, New York, New York.
- 42:02Well a couple more changes for the Mets as we go to the bottom of the third. They've got a new third baseman. Check that. No, they got a new shortstop. That's Mike Phillips.
- 42:12Replacing Bud Harrelson. And they also have a new second baseman, Wayne Garrett. He's in for Felix Millan. So the infield now, Steger at third.
- 42:21Philip the shortstop. Wayne Garrett at second base. Joe Torre still at first.
- 42:29Okay Bill, and a young man was just introduced to the crowd here. Pat Tabler, who was the Yankees number one draft choice in the free agent draft.
- 42:38He's a high school graduate from the city of Cincinnati was just introduced and most of the Yankee bench came out to take a look at him.
- 42:46He's seated right behind the Yankee dugout. Got a little money. I'm sure he must have. Number one draft choices can pick up a little money.
- 42:55Here's Jim Mason leading off the bottom half of the third. Left hand at her and the first pitch is down low for a ball.
- 43:03I asked Tabler what kind of a year he had in high school this past year and he said oh so-so. And I said well what's so-so? What did you have? And he said oh I'm 496.
- 43:13Mason bounces one foul outside of first and the young man was not being facetious. He acted like he wasn't happy with it.
- 43:21Well I tell you the pro is a little bit different. You're going out there every day getting on those buses. Where's he going to play? Onnionna?
- 43:28Yeah he'll play it onnionna.
- 43:29Yeah he'll get on a bus here and there. He'll get two dollars a day of meal money.
- 43:33That's two dollars more than he got in high school.
- 43:35Yeah but it'll be a test for him though.
- 43:38One-one pitch now to Mason. Jim takes low and away for a ball. Two and one.
- 43:43I'll tell you one thing. He is starting his baseball career in a beautiful, beautiful town that has some very, very wonderful and very lovely people.
- 43:53They really are excited about their ball club and only out of New York.
- 43:57That's Yankee Farm team, right?
- 43:58Yes it is. Two-one pitch. Mason bounces it slowly on the right side. Moving over to his left to second baseman Garrett. He flips to Sanders covering. Sanders drops the throw and Mason is safe.
- 44:09Well Garrett normally a third baseman playing out of position. Frank he did what a lot of guys do at second base and by the way the pitcher will get the air.
- 44:22That's Sanders. Sanders I think Garrett waited until Sanders got to the bag and threw the ball.
- 44:31Sanders had to look for the bag and look for the ball therefore he missed the baseball. Give the pitcher the ball before he gets to the bag.
- 44:37And lead him a little bit with it.
- 44:40Alright Mason is on on the air. Charged to Sanders.
- 44:46And the batter is Mickey Rivers. Mickey popped up to third baseman Steger his first time up. Left hand hitter.
- 44:56There's the stretch now by Sanders and the pitch. Line right field and fair ball. It's extra bases. Fair ball in the corner. Extra base hit.
- 45:04On his way to third base is Mason and Hauser flags him down as Rivers goes into second base with a double.
- 45:17Solid. Two baggers on a line drive into the right field corner by Mickey Rivers. So the Yankees have a chance to tie this ball game up.
- 45:26Elliott Maddox who walked in the first inning steps in. Maddox the right hand batter.
- 45:35Elliott Maddox kicked around for a while then came to the Yankees got a chance to play.
- 45:41Bill Gerdin put him in center field and he turned into one of the best center fielders I think in the American League.
- 45:48If not the best.
- 45:51And he also has been swinging a good batty at three oh seven last year until he was hurt. Three oh three the year before.
- 45:59Right hand hitter and the pitch time is swung on hit on the ground a first base the runners holed up as the first baseman Torrey comes up with it and goes to the back.
- 46:08So Maddox is retired by Torrey unassisted one down and the batter will be Lou Pennella.
- 46:24Lou Pennella popped up to second baseman Mian his first time up.
- 46:28Wayne Gerd is now at second base as Bill told you and Dave Phillips the shortstop as Joe Frazier has made wholesale changes early in this ball game.
- 46:37As the Mets are retired ball club they played a doubleheader against the Giants in San Francisco yesterday.
- 46:42Flew home got home about five o'clock this morning.
- 46:52Two on with one out.
- 46:54And Pennella is waiting on Sanders the right hander works off the set position and he comes in with a breaking ball that misses.
- 47:01Sanders sort of wonders where that pitch was.
- 47:08Carlos May is on deck.
- 47:12They really bunch up the middle on Pennella.
- 47:14Phillips and Garret could almost shake hands over second base the pitch time long away.
- 47:18Two balls and no strikes.
- 47:22The outfield is spread out.
- 47:26The Mets lead two nothing the Yankees have two on one out.
- 47:31Face hit by Rivers the double a moment ago the Yankees second hit on the ball game.
- 47:35The pitch to Pennella low and away ball three.
- 47:49Three balls no strikes.
- 47:52Mason leads away at third.
- 47:57Now Rivers will take a short lead at second base.
- 48:01Right hander Sanders looks over at Mason sets and deals Pennella swings ground ball back up the middle and it's behind the bag at second field.
- 48:08They are thrown out of first in time the run scores and Rivers holds at second base.
- 48:16Mickey Rivers held up at second as Mason scores and batter Lou Pennella is thrown out by the shortstop Dave Phillips who went behind the bag to take a slow roller that went back through the box.
- 48:30Though the Yankees are on the board it's a two to one ball game and you'll get Pennella run batted in he is out six three.
- 48:36Rivers holding at second and the batter is Carlos May.
- 48:44Carlos May single to center field his first time up.
- 48:52Look back for Rivers and the pitch to Carlos is high ball one.
- 49:02The Yankees called up to right handers from the minor league for this ballgame.
- 49:06We mentioned Jim Beatty a moment ago also Gil Patterson was called up from West Haven for tonight.
- 49:11One oh pitch strike is called it's one and one.
- 49:18Out in left field Bruce Boclair is very shallow on Carlos May center fielder Leon Brown shades him toward right and Mike Vail straight away and fairly deep in right field the infield is back off.
- 49:32Rivers can get a pretty good lead off second base he draws a look from Ken Sanders.
- 49:36Now the right hander is ready and the one one pitch outside two balls and a strike.
- 49:46Back to American League action for the Yankees tomorrow night as they take on the Minnesota Twins in Bloomington Minnesota.
- 49:52We'll have the game for you on radio at 855 on television at nine o'clock New York time.
- 50:04Sanders rather slow worker now deals to a one change up his high ball three.
- 50:18And the crowd is alive three balls and a strike on Carlos May Fran Healy is on deck.
- 50:24Rivers at second two out to look back there by Sanders and the three one pitch is cut on and missed he came in with a breaking ball on three and one.
- 50:33And had Carlos May fishing.
- 50:50Sanders will deliver three and two to May and it is lined the right field that's going to be a base hit Rivers is going to try it.
- 50:56And they all is up here comes his throw to the plate here comes Rivers throw is cut off.
- 51:03Second base safe at second and the Yankees have tied it up.
- 51:07A single run got it in and Carlos May goes to second base on Mike Bales throw in toward the plate.
- 51:14The throw was cut off by a third baseman Steger.
- 51:17He fired the second it was not a good throw back to second base and they did not take Carlos May.
- 51:26So May is two for two with an RBI and this ball game is tied up to the two.
- 51:36Fran Healy steps in the Yankee catcher grouted out to the shot stop his first time up.
- 51:42He takes a look at the low outside pitch ball on that's two runs on six hits the Yankees two runs on three hits.
- 51:53Due to the error by the pitcher neither Yankee run his own.
- 51:57This pitch is hit high in the air to deep center field back goes Leon Brown.
- 52:01He has room and he makes the catch in deep center to retire the side Yankees tied up with two runs on two hits.
- 52:09There was one Met error and one man is left on base.
- 52:13At the end of three it's a brand new ball game the Yankees two and the Mets two.
- 52:17Colonials Yankee Franks the beef franks with the taste that takes you out to the ball game presents the flavor of Yankee baseball.
- 52:24After playing 2130 straight games Iron Man Lou Gehrig took himself out of the Yankee lineup.
- 52:30Joe McCarthy remembers how it happened.
- 52:32It was an off day and he came up to my room and he said he didn't think he was doing the ball club any good.
- 52:38And he thought he would probably like to get out of the game for a rest.
- 52:44Lou was the captain of the ball club at the time so he took the batting order up.
- 52:50Well the park was packed. I never heard such an ovation.
- 52:53Those people in the bridge stadium they stood up and cheered and Lou came back and they dug out and began to cry.
- 52:59The flavor of Yankee baseball is brought to you by Colonials Yankee Franks.
- 53:03The only Franks sold at Yankee Stadium are now available at supermarkets near you.
- 53:07So you can enjoy that famous baseball flavor on your own home plate.
- 53:11Colonials Yankee Franks the beef franks with the taste that takes you out to the ball game.
- 53:19Well the Yankees make changes now as we go to the fourth inning.
- 53:22Right-hander Jim Beatty will be the new pitcher.
- 53:25Oscar Gamble has gone out to play right field and Elliott Maddox has moved over to center field.
- 53:31Right field, to center, Elliott Maddox.
- 53:35Beatty has just now made his way to the mound to start his warm-up throws.
- 53:39Now the three-three-one-three.
- 53:43Beatty at Syracuse had started ten games.
- 53:46He has a record of four wins and one loss in AAA ball.
- 53:50Although a rather higher in run average of 4.85.
- 53:53Number 48.
- 53:54In 65 innings he had walked 39 and struck out 47.
- 53:59With a record of four wins and one loss.
- 54:04Jim Beatty was invited to spring training this year by the Yankees.
- 54:08He's a big kid, 6'6 and 205 pounds from Hampton, Virginia.
- 54:14He now makes his home in South Portland, Maine out of Dartmouth College.
- 54:20This is only his second year in professional baseball.
- 54:24Started last year at Oneonta. Won two and lost none.
- 54:29Went to Syracuse where he won two and lost two.
- 54:33Won on the 4th of July.
- 54:38He was captain-elect of the Dartmouth basketball team when selected by the Yankees.
- 54:43And chose to sign a pro contract and gave up his college eligibility in basketball.
- 54:50He was an honorable mention, all-American basketball player in 1972.
- 54:55He was all-New England in 1974 and the most valuable player of the Kodak Classic in 1974-75.
- 55:03Beatty's baseball career started in the Cape Cod League.
- 55:10His biggest man on the field now, the Kingman's out of the ball game at 6'6.
- 55:16Alright, he's ready to work and ready with the play-by-play ladies and gentlemen. Here's Bill White.
- 55:20Alright, Frank Messer.
- 55:25First pitch in his foul, back by Bruce Boyclair.
- 55:31Got a change now. We've got Maddox in center field. You gave that already?
- 55:34Alright, and Gamble-Otten Wright for the Yankees.
- 55:36Now, Fran Healy wants to talk to Jim Beatty.
- 55:40Get the sign straight.
- 55:42Boyclair got into the ball game in the second inning, replacing John Miller in left field.
- 55:50He bats left-handed.
- 55:54Beatty looks for a sign. Gets it. Rocks, kicks, and deals a one-strike pitch.
- 55:59Hit foul, left side, upper deck.
- 56:03No balls, two strikes.
- 56:09Once again, Fran Healy out talking to Beatty.
- 56:20Now, Healy back behind the plate.
- 56:27And the two-strike pitch to Boyclair.
- 56:29Curve ball, bounce slowly toward first, it'll kick foul.
- 56:33Carlos May grabs it before Roy McMillan can get it.
- 56:37He liked that, Scooter. McMillan managed that ball club last year for a while.
- 56:41They brought in a new manager, he decided to stay.
- 56:43Yeah, that is unusual.
- 56:49They count still, two strikes on Bruce Boyclair.
- 56:53Beatty's next pitch.
- 56:55Misses wide, one ball, two strikes.
- 57:00Yankees have Velez at third. Mason's a shortstop. Alomar the second baseman, and Carlos May playing at first.
- 57:06Here's a one-two delivery.
- 57:09Too high, two balls, two strikes.
- 57:16Gary Deneen on left field. Elliot Maddox in center, and Oscar Gamble now out on right field.
- 57:21Two-two pitch. Line left field, but Deneen is right there backing up a bit, he's got it.
- 57:28One away.
- 57:33Let's take 15 seconds for station identification on the New York Yankee Home of Champions Radio Network.
- 57:42WMCA is Straus Communications in New York. This is Bob Grant.
- 57:47I'm heard on WMCA Monday through Friday from 3 until 7 p.m. Join me, won't you?
- 57:58No balls, one strike on Steger. One out, nobody on. Score tied, two-two, top of the fourth.
- 58:04The next pitch is low. One ball, one strike.
- 58:09Steger forced a runner at second base in the second inning, and he scored on a single by Jay Clevin, the catcher.
- 58:16One-one pitch, called strike two, and Scooter looks like this guy's got a lot of heat.
- 58:21He can fire that ball, well he's big enough and he's strong enough.
- 58:29Indeed he looks for a sign, gets it, one-two pitch. Curved ball is high. Two balls, two strikes.
- 58:37Didn't break, stayed up.
- 58:42On deck is Leon Brown, the center fielder. Here's the two-two pitch.
- 58:47Steger takes wide. Three balls, two strikes.
- 58:52Ron Gidrey started, he went three and he gave up two runs on six hits.
- 58:57Didn't strike anybody out, nor did he walk anybody.
- 59:02Three-two pitch. Bounced over the mound. Mason waits on a nice hop. Fires the first base just in time.
- 59:09Two down.
- 59:14And with two outs, nobody on, here's Leon Brown.
- 59:19He's batting the first time tonight.
- 59:24Please replace Dell Unter in the second inning.
- 59:27Brown bats right in it, he's batting two-twenty-six.
- 59:32Bates first pitch, it is a fast ball that goes by everybody, back up against the screen. One ball, no strikes.
- 59:41Put glasses on him, he'll be like Ryan Dern.
- 59:45Three-inch glasses. Here's the one-oh pitch now to Brown. Fast ball, bounce the second, Alomar to his left.
- 59:50Scoops it up, takes his time, flips on to May at first base.
- 59:54And that's all for Leon Brown. Three up, three down for the Mets.
- 59:58We go to the bottom half, the fourth inning, score. Yankees two, the Mets two.

- 1:01:14Yes sir, Gene Michael's back with the Yankees.
- 1:01:17Yeah, you short stops have a way of hanging around.
- 1:01:19Yeah, how about that? Well they know, when you got brains and you know shortstop can help a club in some capacity, they sign them.
- 1:01:27Well the Yankees, now what is it, four or five coaches?
- 1:01:31Well they got at least five.
- 1:01:33And a manager.
- 1:01:34And a manager.
- 1:01:38Yeah, they got Yogi, Howard, Hauser, and Lemon.
- 1:01:42And now Gene Michael.
- 1:01:45Alright, Rick Baldwin is the new meta hurler as we go into the bottom of the fourth and Otto Velez will face him.
- 1:01:50Otto has been up once, bounced a third.
- 1:01:54First pitch is up too high a ball.
- 1:01:56Velez, Alomar, Denine, you're in the fourth inning for the Yankees. We've got a 2-2 tie.
- 1:02:01Did you say Mike Ciani was here?
- 1:02:03Mike Ciani is right behind us.
- 1:02:061-0 pitch, swung on and missed.
- 1:02:10How do you know Mike Ciani?
- 1:02:11I know, look at that Huckleberry down there on the, doing a little dance on the Mets dugout.
- 1:02:19Well, everybody's here to have fun.
- 1:02:22Here's the 1-1 delivery to Otto Velez, swung on and missed.
- 1:02:26One ball, two strikes.
- 1:02:31Yeah, I know Mike before he went with the Oakland Raiders.
- 1:02:36He's down at Villanova?
- 1:02:37Yeah.
- 1:02:38Alright, 1-2 pitch, swung on and missed.
- 1:02:41And Velez goes down swinging, one away.
- 1:02:46Hey Mike, you had a chance to be a baseball player. You were a pretty good ball player in college, right?
- 1:02:51Come on.
- 1:02:53Local boy.
- 1:02:54This is social art. You talked to Ciani.
- 1:02:56No, go ahead. You're a couple of Philadelphians, although Mike's not from Philadelphia, right?
- 1:03:02I know you did.
- 1:03:03Good school, Villanova. My daughter goes there.
- 1:03:06No, but in baseball, what position did you play?
- 1:03:09I was a shortstop.
- 1:03:10I figured, good smart, good looking kid. All shortstops are like that.
- 1:03:16First in Gallabar is inside.
- 1:03:18I was drafted by the Yankees out of high school. I went to high school in Staten Island and the Yankees drafted me.
- 1:03:24But you chose football, huh?
- 1:03:25Those would still be straight at even out there playing shortstop.
- 1:03:30The 1-0 pitch to Alomar, swung on, bounced foul outside of first.
- 1:03:34No, you know, I often wondered if we had gotten some of those big husky football players and extra big basketball players that could play baseball,
- 1:03:43we'd have some kind of a team. But all these Huckleberries chose football. How come? That's a rough sport.
- 1:03:49Well, Phil, at the time, I thought my education was pretty important and Villanova was a good school,
- 1:03:54and I also had the opportunity to play football and baseball down there.
- 1:03:59Alomar lands on the right field and is dropped by the right fielder Vail, and Sandy will go on in the second base.
- 1:04:06That'll probably be a two-base error.
- 1:04:09Nope, they're going to give him a base hit.
- 1:04:15Mayer's trophy game, they're very generous. And it's strange, isn't it?
- 1:04:19The two fellows who were hurt and hadn't played a ballgame, Elliot Maddox and Mike Vail, having a little bit of problems in right field.
- 1:04:26Elliot on that long fly to the wall, he's not used to it. Now they change it to an error.
- 1:04:33Should have been that in the first place.
- 1:04:37Alomar down in second, one away, the batter.
- 1:04:41Kerry Deneen, the left fielder.
- 1:04:43Got a 2-2 tie here in the bottom of the fourth.
- 1:04:46Deneen fouls it back, no balls, one strike.
- 1:04:52You know, Oakland's got a guy out there from Brooklyn who runs that ball club, Al Davis.
- 1:04:58Pretty shrewd color.
- 1:04:59He runs the club, I thought the coach did.
- 1:05:01Nope, Davis runs that club.
- 1:05:06I tell you, that Oakland club, they're trying to corral everybody. Who are they trying to get now?
- 1:05:10O.J.
- 1:05:11O.J. Simpson.
- 1:05:14Throw the second base and Alomar is back.
- 1:05:17Now John Maddon's the coach, but Davis runs everything, I think.
- 1:05:21He agrees, Siani agrees.
- 1:05:27Now Garrett trying to sneak in behind Alomar.
- 1:05:33Rick Baldwin in here, he struck out a man and he was hurt by a two-base error by his right fielder, Mike Vail, allowing Alomar to get down to second with one away.
- 1:05:43Here's the one strike pitch to Deneen, hit on the ground, base in left field.
- 1:05:47Alomar will not be able to score.
- 1:05:49The left fielder, Blake Clare, was playing almost right behind shortstop.
- 1:05:53So the Yankees now have runners at first and third with one away.
- 1:05:58And the batter is Jim Mason, the shortstop.
- 1:06:08Mason has been up once, got on on an error by the pitcher.
- 1:06:12He bounced the ball to first base and actually to second base and Garrett waited until the starting pitcher, Sanders, got near the back, threw the ball and Sanders couldn't handle it.
- 1:06:22Sanders picking up the air.
- 1:06:25So Mason's 0 for 1.
- 1:06:28Runners laid off first and third and the pitch.
- 1:06:30Hit a near foul left side, that'll be out of play.
- 1:06:34And it'll make the first throw in the upper deck, then kicks back out and goes downstairs.
- 1:06:39So they count, no balls, one strike on Mason.
- 1:06:45We're in the bottom half, the fourth inning.
- 1:06:47The Mets have two runs on six hits, the Yankees two runs on four.
- 1:06:50The Mets have also committed a couple of errors.
- 1:06:55Powell now with the new baseball sets.
- 1:06:57Checks the runners off first and third and the one strike pitch is down low, one ball, one strike.
- 1:07:05Moving on deck is Oscar Gamble.
- 1:07:17Now Baldwin's ready again.
- 1:07:18Here's a 1-1 pitch with the runner going inside a ball and Cleveland, the catcher, decides to hold the ball.
- 1:07:25So give Benin a stolen base and that takes the possibility of the double play away and the Mets might have to bring their infield in.
- 1:07:32Let's see how they play it.
- 1:07:34The pitch was inside so it's two balls and a strike on Mason with one away.
- 1:07:39And the Mets will keep their infield back except for their third baseman, Steger, who is even with the bag and just wide a third.
- 1:07:46Now Baldwin sets and the 2-1 pitch to Mason.
- 1:07:50Hit on the ground to second base, Alomar is going to score.
- 1:07:53Garrett Mitch has played a first base but the Yankees now lead it 3-2.
- 1:07:59Mason's throwing out four to three, he picks up a run battered in.
- 1:08:02Alomar scores easily.
- 1:08:04Benin goes on to third base.
- 1:08:06We were just talking about that by Benin stealing second, Phil.
- 1:08:10That would have been a double play had he stayed there.
- 1:08:12Perfect double play. I can't understand, Frasier, not playing the infield in though.
- 1:08:17You know, I hate to give up runs, Frasier.
- 1:08:19Yeah.
- 1:08:21Here's Gamble, he's up for his first time in this ball game.
- 1:08:26Baldwin in the windup and the pitch.
- 1:08:29Staken inside a ball.
- 1:08:33So once again Yankee speed works to their advantage.
- 1:08:37Benin stealing second base.
- 1:08:40Possible ground ball, the double play was not gotten.
- 1:08:45Score to run.
- 1:08:47Inside, two balls, no strikes on Gamble.
- 1:08:52Gamble replaced Mickey Rivers in the outfield last inning.
- 1:08:55Rivers had popped to third and doubled to right.
- 1:08:57Score to run.
- 1:09:012-0 pitch to Gamble.
- 1:09:03Swung on line, base hit, center field.
- 1:09:06Benin will score easily and the Yankees now lead 4-2.
- 1:09:15Now you can't pitch Gamble low, he raked that ball in center field.
- 1:09:19A clean single, Benin scoring easily.
- 1:09:22And the Yankees have now increased their lead to 4-2 over the Mets.
- 1:09:25That was their fifth base hit.
- 1:09:28Here's Elliott Maddox, he's walked and bounced the first. 0-1.
- 1:09:33Scooter, do you think Elliott's holding his bat a little bit higher this year?
- 1:09:35Absolutely.
- 1:09:36Yeah, I don't think he's quite back in the groove.
- 1:09:39And as a matter of fact, he was leaning, it seemed to me leaning even more in than he did.
- 1:09:45Of course, he'll work that out as he goes along.
- 1:09:48Goes back to first base and Gamble is back.
- 1:09:51Oscar at first base, one away.
- 1:09:54Two away, check that, they're two outs.
- 1:09:56Yankees lead 4-2, bottom of the fourth.
- 1:10:01Pitch to Maddox, a slider that misses outside.
- 1:10:06Will be in Minnesota tomorrow night.
- 1:10:10Yankees and the Minnesota Twins, as we go back to American League action.
- 1:10:18Now Baldwin is ready.
- 1:10:19And the 1-0 pitch to Maddox.
- 1:10:22Misses low, two balls, no strikes.
- 1:10:26Now time is called, Clevin the catcher wants to talk to Baldwin.
- 1:10:34Tomorrow night, Doc Ellis will be on the mound with the Yankees.
- 1:10:36He'll go against Pete Redfern.
- 1:10:37And on Wednesday, it'll be Ed Figueroa against Bill Singer.
- 1:10:43The ball game should start at 9 o'clock New York time.
- 1:10:51Oh, Clevin back behind the plate and Baldwin's ready.
- 1:10:53A pitch, hit foul, upper deck right side.
- 1:10:56Two balls, one strike on Maddox.
- 1:11:03Frank Messer mentioned to you, the Mets got in very early this morning.
- 1:11:06They've made a lot of changes.
- 1:11:09That Harrelson starting, they got Mike Phillips in there now.
- 1:11:13Meon started, but Wayne Garrett's in there at second base.
- 1:11:16They've got a whole new outfield.
- 1:11:18Inside, three balls, one strike on Maddox.
- 1:11:22Boy Claire replaced Milner in left.
- 1:11:24Leon Brown replaced Unser in center.
- 1:11:27Mike Vail replaced Dave Kingman in right.
- 1:11:33Throw the first base and gamble is back.
- 1:11:38Roy Stager still at third, Joe Torre still at first, and Jake Clevin still behind the plate.
- 1:11:42Now the set by Baldwin.
- 1:11:443-1 pitch.
- 1:11:45Maddox takes outside, ball for it.
- 1:11:51Maddox at first base, that move gambled on at second.
- 1:11:54Still two outs in the batter's loop, Panella.
- 1:11:59Panella's popped a second.
- 1:12:02And bounced a short.
- 1:12:03When he bounced short in the third inning, it drove in a run.
- 1:12:13Yankees lead 4-2.
- 1:12:15We're in the bottom half of the fourth inning.
- 1:12:22Gamble off second.
- 1:12:24Maddox off first.
- 1:12:25And the pitch to Panella.
- 1:12:27Moves him back.
- 1:12:28One ball, no strikes.
- 1:12:38Gamble does not take too big a lead down at second.
- 1:12:44As Baldwin checks him.
- 1:12:46And the pitch to Panella.
- 1:12:47Inside again, two balls, no strikes.
- 1:12:51On deck is Carlos May.
- 1:12:53He's 2-2.
- 1:12:55And he's driven in a run.
- 1:13:02Baldwin checking signs with Clevin.
- 1:13:03Now he straightens up.
- 1:13:04And the 2-0 pitch to Panella is inside again.
- 1:13:06Three balls, no strikes.
- 1:13:10Baldwin keeping the ball in close on Panella.
- 1:13:12He knows he likes the ball out of the play.
- 1:13:14Panella took a quick look down at third base.
- 1:13:17And Dick Hauser gave him a quick sign.
- 1:13:20Here's a 3-0 pitch.
- 1:13:23Right in there called strike.
- 1:13:24It's 3-1.
- 1:13:35Runners lead off first and second.
- 1:13:37The two away.
- 1:13:39Fourth inning.
- 1:13:403-1 pitch to Panella.
- 1:13:42Swung on and missed.
- 1:13:44Count is full and everybody will be running.
- 1:13:46Gamble off second.
- 1:13:47Maddox off first with two outs.
- 1:13:50Yankees have a 4-2 lead over the Mets.
- 1:13:59Baldwin taking a long time reading the signs.
- 1:14:01Now he's ready.
- 1:14:02Runners go.
- 1:14:03Pay off pitch.
- 1:14:04Line foul.
- 1:14:05Into the seats, down the right side.
- 1:14:10Now Gamble and Maddox just got a little bit of exercise.
- 1:14:14Gamble back to second.
- 1:14:16Maddox back to first.
- 1:14:17They'll start again.
- 1:14:33Baldwin is ready.
- 1:14:34Check the runners.
- 1:14:35And they go.
- 1:14:36The pitch.
- 1:14:37Down low.
- 1:14:38Base is loaded.
- 1:14:43Gamble at third base.
- 1:14:44Maddox down at second.
- 1:14:45Panella on at first.
- 1:14:46Two men out.
- 1:14:47Here's Carlos May.
- 1:14:50Carlos single a center field in the first inning.
- 1:14:53Single a right field.
- 1:14:54Driving in a run in the third.
- 1:14:55He's 2 for 2.
- 1:15:00Probably thinking too bad those base hits won't count
- 1:15:03in the American League stats.
- 1:15:05Of course they'll count tomorrow night when the Yankees play the Twins up in Minnesota.
- 1:15:10Baldwin in the windup and the pitch to May.
- 1:15:12Down low a ball.
- 1:15:16Well it's up to Baldwin.
- 1:15:18Joe Frazier has no body getting loose in his bullpen on left center.
- 1:15:24Here's the 1-0 pitch to Carlos May.
- 1:15:26Down low again.
- 1:15:33Two balls no strikes.
- 1:15:34Base is loaded with Yankees and two outs.
- 1:15:39Here's the 2-0 pitch to May.
- 1:15:42In there called strike.
- 1:15:43It's 2 and 1.
- 1:15:51Outfield playing May just slightly to pull.
- 1:15:53The infield the same way.
- 1:15:58As Baldwin rocks, kicks and deals a 2-1 pitch.
- 1:16:01Swung on base and up the middle.
- 1:16:03One run will score.
- 1:16:04Maddox around third base.
- 1:16:05He's going to score.
- 1:16:07And the Yankees now lead 6-2.
- 1:16:12That's Carlos May's some kind of hitter.
- 1:16:14I tell you he is a clutch hitter.
- 1:16:17He's proved that since he's been with the Yankees.
- 1:16:19And you know tonight Bill the outstanding player of the game receives normally a beautiful watch.
- 1:16:26Whoever is the most valuable player and Carlos has almost got it locked up right now.
- 1:16:30He's got three runs batted in and three straight singles.
- 1:16:36Yankees now lead 6-2.
- 1:16:37They've got Fenella down at second base.
- 1:16:39May on it first and here's Fran Healy to catch it.
- 1:16:43Two outs.
- 1:16:45Healy hits one in the air deep left.
- 1:16:47Right there is Booth Boyclair.
- 1:16:50And he puts it away for out number three.
- 1:16:52The Yankees bat around in the fourth inning.
- 1:16:54They score four times.
- 1:16:56On one, two, three.
- 1:16:58Three base hits.
- 1:16:59One air.
- 1:17:00Two men left on base.
- 1:17:02At the end of four the Yankees lead the match 6-2.
- 1:17:05If all you need is money come on into HSC.

- 1:17:36On Friday, June 25th, the most incredible sporting event ever staged.
- 1:17:40The battle for the martial arts championship of the world, the boxer Muhammad Ali.
- 1:17:44The wrestler Antonio Onoki, king of Japanese wrestlers.
- 1:17:47See it on the giant closed circuit color screens at the National Veterans Memorial Coliseum and at the Comac Arena.
- 1:17:52Also see Chuck Wefner, Andre the Giant, Bruno San Martino, Dangerous Sam Hansen.
- 1:17:57Boxers versus wrestlers.
- 1:17:58Don't miss this super event headlining Muhammad Ali and Antonio Onoki.
- 1:18:02Tickets available at the box office or through Ticketron.
- 1:18:24It's just talking.
- 1:18:25And it looks like Thurman Muntz is going to go out to center field.
- 1:18:30Thurman said he can play any position.
- 1:18:32We're going to see him tonight.
- 1:18:34Center field, not as easy as it looks.
- 1:18:38With the Yankees leading 6 to 2 and Elliot Maddux, Billy Martin doesn't want to give him too much work out there and re-injure that leg.
- 1:18:47And Elliot was on base twice.
- 1:18:51So we're going to see what Thurman can do out in the outfield.
- 1:18:53By the way, we'll be on TV tomorrow night.
- 1:18:56From Minnesota.
- 1:19:04There's the hand for Thurman.
- 1:19:08I hope they hit the first three balls to him out there.
- 1:19:11Tough chances. Sinking line drives knuckleball.
- 1:19:15And one up against the fence.
- 1:19:20You want to give him all difficult plays.
- 1:19:23Figure that'll shut him up.
- 1:19:25What if he makes them all?
- 1:19:26Then you're really in trouble.
- 1:19:27Oh, I know it.
- 1:19:29You're in enough trouble now.
- 1:19:31If he makes it, you're really in trouble, huh?
- 1:19:36Here's Jake Cleven to catcher and he takes outside a ball.
- 1:19:42Cleven drove in the two met runs with a single to right field in the second inning.
- 1:19:48Bates next pitch.
- 1:19:50Overhand fastball is low. Two balls, no strikes.
- 1:19:54With the top half of fifth inning, the Yankees lead six to two over the Mets.
- 1:19:59Fourteenth time these two teams have met.
- 1:20:03And it's outside. Three balls, no strikes.
- 1:20:05The Yankees won seven and the Mets six.
- 1:20:08And over a million and a half dollars have been donated to San La baseball in the metropolitan area.
- 1:20:18Down low, ball four and Cleven walks.
- 1:20:23He had an easy inning last inning.
- 1:20:25Got him down one, two, three, but he's walked the leadoff batter here in the top of the fifth.
- 1:20:31Here's the pitcher, Rick Baldwin.
- 1:20:39Baldwin goes up left handed.
- 1:20:44Of course, if this were a regular season game, Joe Frazier would probably go for a pinch hitter.
- 1:20:50He's got the Mets are down four runs.
- 1:20:54He just wants Baldwin to get his work in on the mound.
- 1:20:56Beatty now sets and checks the runner at first base and the pitch.
- 1:21:00Outside, ball one.
- 1:21:02Now Billy Martin out of the Yankee dugout. He wants to talk to the youngster.
- 1:21:16He's got to get back to the regular season score. Those Cleveland Indians really hanging in there.
- 1:21:20They're only four and a half games behind the Yankees.
- 1:21:22They're now playing an even 500 baseball.
- 1:21:24I said if they had had a little bit of luck early in the year when they lost, I think, 10 one run games out of about 12.
- 1:21:31Maybe right. Maybe even or ahead of the Yankees.
- 1:21:34But thank goodness they lost them, but they are playing great ball.
- 1:21:39Now, Beatty's ready. The one old pitch in there called strike. One ball, one strike.
- 1:21:45On deck is a shortstop, Mike Phillips.
- 1:21:48We're playing the top of the fifth. Yankees ahead of the Mets, six to two.
- 1:21:53Mets have a runner at first base. Nobody out.
- 1:21:55Here's the one, one pitch to Baldwin. Swung on and missed. One ball, two strikes.
- 1:22:05Now, you're talking to Mike Ciani about choosing football over baseball. This kid, Jim Beatty, chose baseball over basketball.
- 1:22:15Now the set. One, two delivery to Phillips. Hit on the ground foul outside third base.
- 1:22:23And the count remains. One and two.
- 1:22:36Beatty now gets new baseball and sets.
- 1:22:39And the next pitch. Hit on the ground a second. Alomar's up. He goes to Mason for one. Backs the first. Double play.
- 1:22:47Rick Baldwin just bounced into a four, six to three double play and her two outs.
- 1:22:57And here's Mike Phillips. Phillips now will wait and waste a little time in order to allow Baldwin to get a little rest on the bench.
- 1:23:12Phillips came on in the third inning replacing Bud Aroulson, so he's up for his first time.
- 1:23:18He's in left-handed.
- 1:23:29Here's Beatty's first delivery. Two high ball.
- 1:23:37Metch took an early two-nothing lead. Yankee started up bottom of the third with two. Went ahead with four in the fourth.
- 1:23:43Two high again. Two balls. No strikes on Phillips.
- 1:23:57The 2-0 pitch. Ball strike. Gets two balls in one strike.
- 1:24:10And the 2-1 delivery. High. Three balls and a strike. On deck is Wayne Garrison.
- 1:24:25And the next pitch to Mike Phillips. Swung on and fouled back just under us.
- 1:24:38Two outs, nobody on top of the fifth. The Yankees lead six to two.
- 1:24:43And the next delivery. Two high, ball four, and Phillips walks.
- 1:24:50Second walk issued by Beatty. Phillips at first base. Two outs and the batter is Wayne Garrett, the second baseman.
- 1:24:58Garrett replaced Felix Mion in the third inning. Mion had been robbed of a base hit by Mason.
- 1:25:05And Mion had also singled a right field before he left.
- 1:25:11Garrett bats left-handed. May will play behind the runner at first base. Mike Phillips.
- 1:25:17Garrett bounces one foul outside first. No balls and a strike.
- 1:25:34Now it doesn't look like Hank Soar, the home plate umpire, has lost any of his eyes, Cooter.
- 1:25:38Now he looks good. Hit in the air at left field and Deneen is waiting there. And he's got it.
- 1:25:49No runs, no hits, no errors. One man left on base. We go to the bottom half of the fifth inning. The Yankees six, the Mets two.
- 1:26:03Nowadays, you can't listen to radio, watch television, or read a newspaper without some auto manufacturer telling you what great gas mileage his car gets.

- 1:26:59Void wear prohibited. Getty is saving you money on and off the road.
- 1:27:04Well, at first base, Ed Cranepool has just gone in for Joe Torre.
- 1:27:10And Cranepool is the only man who has played in all 14 May's Trophy games.
- 1:27:16And that is a record I don't think anybody's ever going to be able to beat, Bill.
- 1:27:20Down it. Here's Otto Velez.
- 1:27:25Hits one in the air, left center. Moving over to the left fielder, Boyd Clarence Callen.
- 1:27:30He's there. He's got it.
- 1:27:33Went away.
- 1:27:36We're in the bottom of the fifth. Yankees lead 6-2, one out, nobody on.
- 1:27:40Alomar, the batter. Sandy's flying to center field, got in on an error.
- 1:27:44That error started Yankees off on their four run fourth inning.
- 1:27:49There was by the right fielder, Mike Vale.
- 1:27:56Two base error.
- 1:28:01Alomar lines with a stab by the third baseman, Steger.
- 1:28:05Steger moving just a bit to his right, leaps and got the ball, two down.
- 1:28:13Here's Terry Deneen, the left fielder. He's popped the second and single to left.
- 1:28:17Stolen a base, scored a run.
- 1:28:21Batch left handed.
- 1:28:29Baldwin's first pitch.
- 1:28:32On the outside corner, a called strike.
- 1:28:44Baldwin wants another side from Cleverton, gets it.
- 1:28:47One strike pitch, change up, called strike two.
- 1:28:51Pulled the string on it and got it over.
- 1:29:00And the 0-2 delivery.
- 1:29:02Deneen backs off a pitch inside.
- 1:29:05One ball, two strikes. On deck is Jim Mason.
- 1:29:17One-two pitch to Deneen.
- 1:29:19Swung on it on the ground to first base.
- 1:29:21Crane pool bowels it, comes up, throws underhand, and they just got him at first base.
- 1:29:26The put out crane pool, the ball was covering crowd number three.
- 1:29:29No runs, no hits, nobody left on base.
- 1:29:32The Yankees lead the match 6-2.
- 1:29:38Hi, I'm Roger Miller.
- 1:29:40You know the shock absorbers on your car wear out so gradually you don't always know when you need new ones.
- 1:29:46So why take chances? If you've had the same shocks for a couple of years now, you probably need replacing.
- 1:29:52Replace them with Gabriel Red Riders.
- 1:29:55Red Riders are heavy duty shocks with a full 1-316 inch diameter piston.
- 1:30:00They're built bigger than ordinary 1-inch shocks to give you a smooth, comfortable ride with control and stability when you need it.
- 1:30:07Yet they're priced with the light weights.
- 1:30:09And new Red Riders can save wear and tear on your tires, front end, and suspension.
- 1:30:14See how much better your car will ride with heavy duty Gabriel Red Riders.
- 1:30:18Smooth ride, comfortable price, Gabriel Red Riders.
- 1:30:24We're now at Golden Franklin, 1029 Atlantic Avenue, Brooklyn.
- 1:30:42Fred Stanley has moved in to play third base now for Otto Velez.
- 1:30:48And that I believe, yes, is the only change for the Yankees right now.
- 1:30:54So Stanley at third. We go into the top of the sixth, Bill.
- 1:30:57Alright, Scooter.
- 1:31:01And Ed Flanepool will lead off for the Mets. Yankees lead the Mets 6-2.
- 1:31:08Flanepool just got into the ball game last inning.
- 1:31:11The bottom of last inning to play first base for Joe Torre.
- 1:31:17On the year for the Mets, Flanepool batting 280.
- 1:31:20A left-handed batter.
- 1:31:23We'll get Flanepool, Mike Vail, and then Bruce Boy Claire for the Mets here in the top half of sixth inning.
- 1:31:31Here's the final, Milwaukee beat California 8-2.
- 1:31:34Highlight there, Hank Aaron, in his third home run of the year, the third with two on.
- 1:31:40Number 748 for Aaron in his career.
- 1:31:45Detroit leads Kansas City 1-0 after three.
- 1:31:48Boston, Minnesota, we don't have a score there. Wise against Derker, or Decker.
- 1:31:55Pitch to Cranepool is outside of ball.
- 1:31:59Jim Beatty's pitching in his third inning.
- 1:32:04The next pitch, it on the ground. Knocked down by Beatty. He'll go to first base. He's got it.
- 1:32:12Let's take 15 seconds for station identification on the New York Yankee home of champions radio network.
- 1:32:18WMCA, Straus Communications in New York.
- 1:32:22This is Mel Allen. Instead of having a fleet of planes, Emory has a fleet of airlines.
- 1:32:28Emory Air Freight, the shortest distance between two points.
- 1:32:34Mike Vail is in it when the deep short is bobbled by Mason.
- 1:32:38And Vail is safe at first base. That'll be a base set. Mason had to go a little bit to his right in the hole.
- 1:32:44Couldn't handle the hop, and Vail is on it first to get to base set.
- 1:32:49Base set number 7 for the Mets. Vail first.
- 1:32:56So he's at first base. Went out here is Bruce Boyd Clare, the left fielder.
- 1:33:09Left handed batter. The set by Beatty. And the pitch swung on and fouled back.
- 1:33:15Boyd Clare with a big grip and a high fastball.
- 1:33:19Yankees lead 6-2. We're playing the top of the sixth.
- 1:33:24Yankee 6 runs on 6 hits. The Mets 2 runs on 7 base hits.
- 1:33:30Mets have been hurt by a couple of errors. One strike pitch. Down low. One ball, one strike.
- 1:33:46On deck's the third baseman, Roy Sager, as Beatty sets.
- 1:33:50And the 1-1 pitch. Hit in the air. Shallow right center. Coming on gamble. And also Mutsen. Mutsen's gonna call.
- 1:33:57He's there, and he's got it with one hand.
- 1:34:00He's cutting up by. He would have spiked gamble to get that one.
- 1:34:06So Thur Mutsen makes his first put out of the center fielder. And they're 2 outs.
- 1:34:15Vail's still at first base. And the batter is the third baseman, Roy Sager.
- 1:34:32Sager bats right handed. He's 0-2.
- 1:34:39May decides to play behind the runner at first base, Mike Vail.
- 1:34:43Sager swings. He doesn't get a fast ball.
- 1:34:46He's in on his fifth. No ball, one strike.
- 1:34:58Beatty sets. And the one strike pitch. Another fast ball. Chopped to short. Masons there.
- 1:35:04Goes to Alomar's second base with a force on Mike Vail for out number 3.
- 1:35:09No runs at base hit. A man left on base. We go to the bottom half of sixth inning.
- 1:35:13The Yankees lead them at 6-2.
- 1:35:17I want a beer like no other beer. I'm Schaefer's beer. I want a flavor that won't disappear. I'm Schaefer's beer.
- 1:35:29Consistency makes a great beer. And Schaefer's consistently great tasting every single time because Schaefer's brewed the old world way.
- 1:35:37Cruising we call it. In 1942, cruising the extra step of brewing twice has kept Schaefer consistently fresh and crisp.
- 1:35:44Consistently great tasting beer after Schaefer's beer.
- 1:35:47I want a beer like no other beer. I'm Schaefer's beer. I want a flavor that won't disappear. I'm Schaefer's beer. Schaefer's beer's the greatest. Your last one tastes as good as your first. I want to get a Schaefer and be Schaefer's beer too.
- 1:36:14F&M Schaefer Brewing Company, New York, New York.
- 1:36:20Well, Jim Mason will lead off for the Yankees as we go to the bottom half of the sixth inning.
- 1:36:26The Yankees lead them at 6-2. Mason has gotten on on an errand score.
- 1:36:31Drove in a run with a bounce out the second so he's 0-2. But on the plus side he's driven in a run he scored one.
- 1:36:39Left-handed batter hits a foul coming back by the screen. Clevin the catcher back and can't get to it.
- 1:36:47It's in the seats foul.
- 1:36:53No balls, one strike to count on Mason.
- 1:37:06On deck is Oscar Gammell.
- 1:37:10The one strike pitch change is high. One ball, one strike.
- 1:37:24Baldwin's 1-1 delivery to Mason. Just missed the outside corner. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:37:40And the 2-1 pitch to Mason. Swung on, hit foul, left side. That'll be way back out of play.
- 1:37:49And it's two balls, two strikes.
- 1:37:55It'll be in Minnesota tomorrow.
- 1:38:08Knock Ellis will pitch for the Yankees. 2-2 pitch to Mason. The check is swinging, he takes inside and the count is full. Three balls, two strikes.
- 1:38:19Ellis will be looking for his sixth one of the year. He's 5-4. He'll go against Pete Redford.
- 1:38:26They all pitch to Mason. Inside and low, ball four.
- 1:38:34Mason walks. He's at first base, nobody out. Here's Oscar Gammell.
- 1:38:40Gammell's been up once.
- 1:38:45Joe been a run with a single in center field and he scored himself on a single by Carlos May.
- 1:38:52Yankees ahead 6-2, bottom of the sixth.
- 1:38:56Mason off first base with nobody out. Gammell takes low.
- 1:39:09A left-hander, Bob Myre, getting loose in the Met's bullpitch.
- 1:39:141-0 pitch. Gammell takes the strike. Letter high on the outside, corner and it's 1-1.
- 1:39:28These games have made over a million and a half dollars for New York Sandlot Baseball.
- 1:39:331-1 pitch. Swung on it deep to right, going back is bail, he won't get it, it's still on a home run.
- 1:39:40It's in the seats and comes out, but the first base umpire, Sat Davidson, waves him around.
- 1:39:47Mason scores. Gammell just getting the second. He's trying on the third.
- 1:39:51The Yankees will lead it 8-2 by the time Gammell gets home in about a minute.
- 1:39:56I don't blame him. He's savoring this. All the Yankee fans standing up.
- 1:40:02That Carlos May might have to get another base hit to win that most valuable play or what.
- 1:40:08Well, Gammell's also driven in three runs along with Carlos May.
- 1:40:13May has three singles to drive in his three runs.
- 1:40:17Gammell has an RBI single and a two-run home run for his three. Here's Munchen.
- 1:40:24Yankees now lead it 8-2. Still playing bottom of the sixth.
- 1:40:31Nobody out, nobody on. Munchen hits one left center, that's going to be a base hit.
- 1:40:36Boy Claire gets it on the first top. He gets it back in and Munchen holds it first base.
- 1:40:41So Munchen.
- 1:40:50Singles to left center. He's at first base. Nobody out. The batter, Lou Pennella.
- 1:40:55Well, while we got a moment, we forgot that Getty round tripper for Oscar Gammell.
- 1:41:00And Oscar receives Getty gift certificates. Good for the purchase of Getty Premium.
- 1:41:05The gasoline, that according to a recent survey, sells from two to two and a half cents less per gallon
- 1:41:10than most other major premiums. Getty's got what's best for your car.
- 1:41:15All right, Pennella fouls the first pitch back. No balls and a strike.
- 1:41:26Crane pool holding on Munchen. The set by Baldwin and the pitch. Pennella swings.
- 1:41:35He doesn't get it. No balls, two strikes.
- 1:41:41Yankees scoring runs in bunches. Mets took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
- 1:41:46Yankees tied it up in the bottom of the third, added four more and batted around in the fourth.
- 1:41:51Two more here in the sixth. They lead it 8-2. Pennella swings and he doesn't get a seager.
- 1:41:59One down as Pennella strikes out. Here's Carlos May.
- 1:42:05What kind of watch is that the winner gets?
- 1:42:08Well, I wanted one year, believe it or not. Beautiful, beautiful. I don't know whether they've changed.
- 1:42:13I better not say the name of the one I got. But coming up with those fancy ones now
- 1:42:18probably has to be Seiko, I would think. It's on the scoreboard.
- 1:42:23Doesn't hurt to give them a plug anyway.
- 1:42:26Carlos May takes a strike over the outside corner.
- 1:42:33Carlos, three straight singles. He's driven in three runs.
- 1:42:39He's got Munchen at first base with one out here in the bottom of the sixth.
- 1:42:43One strike pitch to May. Misses inside. One ball, one strike.
- 1:42:54Yankees are really touched up Rick Baldwin.
- 1:43:00Now the right hander sets. 1-1 delivery.
- 1:43:03Misses outside. Two balls, one strike.
- 1:43:12Of course Baldwin would have been honored that fourth inning had his right fielder caught that line drive off the bat of Sandy Alomar.
- 1:43:192-1 pitch. Swung on and bounced foul back to the screen. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:43:27In that fourth inning, Velez struck out. Alomar lined one to right field.
- 1:43:32A veil was played for a two-base error.
- 1:43:35Deneen then single to left field. Mason bounced to second.
- 1:43:42Driving in a run.
- 1:43:46Gamble single in a run. Maddox walks over to Panella and May single in two more runs.
- 1:43:55That was in the fourth inning when the Yankees scored four times.
- 1:43:59Now the set. 2-2 pitch to Carlos May.
- 1:44:02Line base hit right field.
- 1:44:05Munson will hold a second as Velez gets the ball into the cutoff man Mike Phillips.
- 1:44:11Carlos May four for four. And he's got another leg now on that watch.
- 1:44:16Boy.
- 1:44:18And finally Rub Walker's coming out.
- 1:44:27Meanwhile Rick Dempsey comes in from the bullpen so Rick will be utilized some way.
- 1:44:34Both clubs try to get all their players into a game.
- 1:44:37Well Fran Healy is due in the bat so they'll probably or could let Dempsey bat for Healy.
- 1:44:52And now Bob Myrick the new pitcher is making his way to the mound.
- 1:44:59These Baby Ruth fun-sized bars sure are delicious and I ought to know.
- 1:45:03Why is that?
- 1:45:04Well it just so happens I consider myself to be quite a candy bar connoisseur.
- 1:45:08And a Baby Ruth's got fudge and peanuts, chewy caramel, a rich chocolatey coating, terrific stuff.
- 1:45:14Plus these new bags are mighty economical. Some people call them fun-sized but I call them Bill Whitesized because they're just right for me.
- 1:45:21I see.
- 1:45:22I'm crazy about Baby Ruth bars and it's not easy for something to get to first base with me. Get it Frank?
- 1:45:28Oh brother.
- 1:45:33You work hard all year for your vacation and you look forward to it.
- 1:45:37So when it finally comes be sure to make the most of it with a vacation loan from Household Finan an equal opportunity lender.
- 1:45:45Household Finan, where people use our money to get the most out of life.
- 1:46:00Now Bob Myrick out taking his warm-up tosses. Yankees have runners at first and second.
- 1:46:10There's one out that's already scored twice here in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-2 lead over the New York Mets.
- 1:46:16Yankees have eight runs on nine base hits, including four straight singles by Carlos May.
- 1:46:22The Mets have two runs on seven hits and their runs were driven in by the rookie catcher Jay Clevin.
- 1:46:29Clevin called up just to catch this ball game and the young fellow so far has handled himself well.
- 1:46:43Mutson down at second base.
- 1:46:47May on it first and Rick Dempsey will bat for Fran Healy.
- 1:46:52Healy while he was in the ball game was 0 for 3.
- 1:46:55So Dempsey will bat for Healy and probably stay in and catch.
- 1:46:59Lillian Martin giving everybody a chance to get a little work in.
- 1:47:02Dempsey takes the strike.
- 1:47:10On deck is Fred Stanley.
- 1:47:14They're set by Merrick and the pitch. Merrick's down low. One ball, one strike.
- 1:47:28Mutson stretching his legs down at second base.
- 1:47:34May with the short lead off first. 1-1 pitch. Hit on the ground, a shortstop. Might be 2. The second for 1. Back to first it is 2.
- 1:47:42Mets turn an easy 6-4 to 3 double play and they get out of the inning. No runs. Check that.
- 1:47:48Two runs for the Yankees. On three base hits they leave a man on base.
- 1:47:54Now at the end of 6 it's the Yankees 8. The New York Mets 2.
- 1:47:59Are you having trouble with your car's transmission? Relax.
- 1:48:03Don't waste time running from one small shop to another hoping they'll have the parts and experience to fix your car.
- 1:48:10Relax. Take your car to AMCO Transmissions, the world's largest transmission specialist with more than 525 centers coast to coast.
- 1:48:20AMCO has serviced over 4 million transmissions so you can relax when they service yours.
- 1:48:26AMCO Transmissions, AA MCO.
- 1:48:33When you get hit with bills all at once, strike back with a bill payer loan from HFC, an equal opportunity lender.
- 1:48:41We could make that big payment so you can handle one smaller monthly payment.
- 1:48:46Come on in, come on in, come on in to HFC.
- 1:48:52Outdoor Finance, where people use our money to get the most out of life.
- 1:48:57Come on in to HFC.
- 1:49:14At the end of 6 the Yankees have 8 runs on 9 hits. The Mets 2 runs on 7.
- 1:49:19Dan here to take you over to the next three. The Scooter, Bill Rizzuto.
- 1:49:23Okay Bill, and the Mets fans are starting to come alive.
- 1:49:32Yelling, let's go Mets, and the Yankee fans giving it right back to them.
- 1:49:37They got a long way to go, the Yankees are leading 8 to 2.
- 1:49:44And Rick Dempsey has come on to do the catching for the Yankees.
- 1:49:52You know Scooter, Bill and I were talking earlier during the broadcast about this excited crowd for the Mayor's Trophy Game, an exhibition game, true.
- 1:49:59But a good indication I think of the excitement that interleague play would generate.
- 1:50:03Boy I'm with you and Bill a thousand percent Frank. I, like Hank Greenberg, have been for that for many, many years.
- 1:50:10A lot of the American League has won it, but nobody in the National League seems to want it.
- 1:50:14I think they'll swing around eventually.
- 1:50:17I sure hope so. Alright Jim Beatty delivers a bunt foul grabbed by Dempsey, but it was foul.
- 1:50:27Yankees in front 8-2 and the top of the seventh.
- 1:50:32The win here will make that playing ride to Minnesota very enjoyable.
- 1:50:38Frank said just an exhibition game, but the bragging rights to New York City, right Frank? I'd rather say that.
- 1:50:45That's right. You know it's great for the fans though. You have a crowd here just about equally divided I guess.
- 1:50:52Mets fans and Yankee fans, they'll talk about this for the rest of the summer.
- 1:50:56The 1-1 pitch, it bounced to the third. Stanley knocks it down, picks it up, can't make a throw.
- 1:51:02That ball was hit like a bullet. And I think it rang the bell down there at third base.
- 1:51:12A hit, a base hit has been given to Leon Brown on a hard hit ground to the Stanley.
- 1:51:20And now here's the young catcher Jay Cleven. He's singled in the Mets only runs in the second inning and walked in the fifth.
- 1:51:31Nobody out. Mr. Cleven line, another base hit right center field.
- 1:51:38Brown's running, oh Munson bobbled the ball and didn't throw it in right away.
- 1:51:43And Cleven heads up, went in second. Munson's going to get an error. A single and an error.
- 1:51:57So the Mets have run as that second and third, nobody out.
- 1:52:02Thurman had a shot for the runner at third when he bobbled the ball.
- 1:52:05He was a little upset, picked it up, forgot about the runner at second.
- 1:52:09And Cleven, or Cleven, K-L-E-V-E-N, stormed in the second base so the youngster is 2 for 2.
- 1:52:20And the pitcher Bob Myrick, Myrick is up there, swings and misses the first pitch, strike one.
- 1:52:31Right hand batter, beady kicks, his pitch bounced back to the pitcher over his head.
- 1:52:36Stanley will have to make the play and does. Nice play by Stanley but a run scores.
- 1:52:42And RBI for Myrick, as Leon Brown scores. Moving over to third is Jay Cleven.
- 1:52:49And the batter now will be Mike Phillips. So it's now the Yankees 8 and the Mets 3.
- 1:52:54They're in the top of the seventh.
- 1:53:06You can hear the crowd in the background.
- 1:53:12Yankees have the infield back with the exception of Stanley at third.
- 1:53:17Beady winds and his pitch swinging a miss, strike one.
- 1:53:30Levin leads off third.
- 1:53:33Fastball hit in the air to center field, that'll be deep enough to get Cleven Hall Munson's back.
- 1:53:37One hand hit, but Cleven tags and scores easily on the sacrifice fly.
- 1:53:43A run batted in for Phillips and it's now the Yankees 8 and the Mets 4.
- 1:53:53Another young right hander getting ready to come into the ball game later on for the Yankees.
- 1:53:57Gil Patterson is warming up out on the bullpen.
- 1:54:01All right, Wayne Garrett the batter, he swings and misses, strike one.
- 1:54:04You know that Yankee scout Dave Yocum signed not only the kid Pat Tabler,
- 1:54:11but he also signed Patterson he was telling me.
- 1:54:14Oh, he's got a pretty good eye.
- 1:54:16He's got a pretty good record that kid Patterson this year.
- 1:54:20It's a little high and tight and it's one and one.
- 1:54:23He'd won five and lost one so far at West Haven.
- 1:54:26Yeah, so he must have a pretty good eye, Mr. Yocum.
- 1:54:31Change up inside, two balls and a strike.
- 1:54:33Two out, nobody on, 8-4 the Yankees lead top of the 7.
- 1:54:42Fastball foul back and out of play.
- 1:54:49Did Tabler tell you the same thing he told me when he asked him what kind of a season he had?
- 1:54:52Yes, I couldn't believe it.
- 1:54:54He was disappointed because he batted 496.
- 1:54:57Like with eight home runs, that's a lot for a short high school schedule in Cincinnati.
- 1:55:04A little high and it's three and two.
- 1:55:06That's a lot for a short high school schedule in Chicago.
- 1:55:09You're right, Frank.
- 1:55:12He told me there were five of the first picks in the first round from high schools in Cincinnati.
- 1:55:19Grounded a short, Mason has it and throws him out.
- 1:55:25The Mets pick up two runs on two bases, one Yankee error, nobody left.
- 1:55:30And in the middle of the 7th, the Yankees 8 and the Mets 4.
- 1:55:37Yes, yes, these are men who said yes.
- 1:55:39That's your Chrysler Plymouth dealer.
- 1:55:43So here's what we did.
- 1:55:45We went down to our Chrysler Plymouth dealer and I asked him, do you have a neat little hatchback?
- 1:55:49Yeah, one that we can afford.
- 1:55:51And he said, yes, the sharp new Plymouth arrow.
- 1:55:54Arrow's base sticker price is only $31.75, excluding taxes and destination charges.
- 1:55:59He only $31.75 for a Plymouth arrow?
- 1:56:02Yes, and that includes many standard features that you'll want to say yes to.
- 1:56:06Like what?
- 1:56:07Like reclining bucket seats, tilt steering wheel.
- 1:56:10Go on.
- 1:56:11Power front disc brakes and tinted glass all around.
- 1:56:14All that for $31.75?
- 1:56:16Yes, sir.
- 1:56:17Well, you know what we said to that, don't you?
- 1:56:19We said yes.
- 1:56:20Yes, yes, we're gonna say yes, we're your Chrysler Plymouth dealer.
- 1:56:26See the men who say yes at your local Plymouth arrow dealer today.
- 1:56:38Right now let's pause 15 seconds for station identification.
- 1:56:42This is the New York Yankee Home of Champions Radio Network.
- 1:56:45Good point in the war.
- 1:56:48WNCA, cross-communications in New York.
- 1:56:51I'm Leon Lewis.
- 1:56:52Catch me on the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 4 p.m. until 8.
- 1:57:02Well, the Yankees will be on the road until next Monday night.
- 1:57:04When they come back, they'll meet the Cleveland Indians in a four-game series,
- 1:57:07and then the Milwaukee Brewers in a four-game series with a double-header set for Sunday, June 27th.
- 1:57:12Scooter?
- 1:57:13All right, and those Cleveland Indians, as you mentioned, Frank, in second place.
- 1:57:17What, four and a half behind the Yankees now?
- 1:57:19That's right, four and a half behind.
- 1:57:21So that'll be a big four-game series.
- 1:57:23Fred Stanley, the batter, hits one a straightaway center field,
- 1:57:27and Leon Brown makes the catch.
- 1:57:31One away.
- 1:57:37Sandy Alomar.
- 1:57:38Sandy's been up twice, reached on an error, and lined a third.
- 1:57:42Bob Myrick on the mound, so Sandy just switches around about right-handed against the left-hander.
- 1:57:48Yankees, eight, Mets, four, bottom of the seventh.
- 1:57:52On deck, Kerry Deneen, and the pitch is fouled back into the crowd.
- 1:58:13Fly ball left field, right there is Bruce Boycler, makes the catch, and they're a two-away.
- 1:58:29What do you got there, Frank?
- 1:58:31Well, you were talking to and with Mike Ciani a while ago, Scooter.
- 1:58:36Mike is sponsoring the first annual Mike Ciani Celebrity Golf Day,
- 1:58:41sponsored by the Young People's Information Service, Inc., to help out on the drug program.
- 1:58:46It'll be Wednesday, June 23rd, at the Richmond County Country Club in Staten Island, New York.
- 1:58:51June, it had to be June 23rd, my wedding anniversary.
- 1:58:56Why?
- 1:59:01Kerry Deneen is up there, he's got two strikes up.
- 1:59:04You had to pick June 23rd, Mike, huh?
- 1:59:07Well, Frank, you can get Mike over here and talk about it a little while.
- 1:59:11I've got to figure out a way to change that date on my wedding anniversary.
- 1:59:15There's a foul out of play.
- 1:59:17You're about 30 years too late to change that date.
- 1:59:21What anniversary want to be?
- 1:59:23You're going to put me on the spot for that date.
- 1:59:25No, don't answer that.
- 1:59:26No, wait a minute, let me figure it out.
- 1:59:28They've been such beautiful years and have gone by so quickly.
- 1:59:31We were married in 1943.
- 1:59:34So that would make it 33 years.
- 1:59:40Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.
- 1:59:43I need new glasses.
- 1:59:46Deneen strikes out, and the inning's over.
- 1:59:49We're going to let Frank talk with Mike when we come back after this.
- 1:59:52But nothing across at the end of seven.
- 1:59:55It's the Yankees eight and the Mets four.
- 1:59:59Seven eight two six thousand.
- 2:00:01Seven eight two six thousand.
- 2:00:02Lincoln, Taylor, say.
- 2:00:03Retirement department, please.
- 2:00:04Those lines are busy, sir.
- 2:00:05Is this about an individual retirement account?
- 2:00:08Yes, is that ad for real?
- 2:00:09Yes, sir.
- 2:00:10If you're not already covered by a pension plan, you can save 15% of your income up to $1,500 a year in a Lincoln retirement account.
- 2:00:17And not pay any taxes on it?
- 2:00:19No taxes until you retire, not even on the interest.
- 2:00:22How old are you?
- 2:00:2327. How old are you?
- 2:00:24Let's see, 27. If you save $1,500 a year, okay?
- 2:00:28Well, okay.
- 2:00:29At our current rate of 7.75%, at 65 you'll have $373,170.
- 2:00:36Oh, wow. Are you members of the FDIC?
- 2:00:39Yes, and if you withdraw it quarterly over ten years, the extra interest brings it to well over half a million dollars.
- 2:00:44Half a million, guaranteed?
- 2:00:47Well, rates change, but the Lincoln guarantees their highest available interest at all times.
- 2:00:51What about my Social Security?
- 2:00:53Oh, that'll be a fringe benefit.
- 2:00:55What about dinner tonight?
- 2:00:57Lincoln Savings Bank, 7-8-2-6-7-8.
- 2:01:01Well, this one is on the pitch for the Yankees, and Mike Ciani, just what is this Celebrity Golf Day all about?
- 2:01:07Well, Frank, it's the first annual Mike Ciani Tournament on Staten Island,
- 2:01:12and the proceeds from the tournament will go to the Young People's Information Service, which is a drug program on Staten Island.
- 2:01:21Well, I hope you have very great success with it and that it will go on for several years.
- 2:01:26Well, I think we will. We've gotten some good responses from the golfers on Staten Island and the businessmen. They support us very well.
- 2:01:34Very good. And that's going to be Wednesday, June 23rd at the Richmond County Country Club, Staten Island.
- 2:01:39Right.
- 2:01:40Mike, we wish you the very best of luck in that, and I offer you my congratulations on behalf of Bill White and Phil Rosito
- 2:01:47in taking an active part in this Young People's Information Service program.
- 2:01:51Thank you, Frank.
- 2:01:53Okay, we have a new pitcher on for the Yankees, Gil Patterson.
- 2:01:56Right hander up from West Haven, where, as we told you a few minutes ago, he had won five and he had lost one.
- 2:02:02He'll be ready to work now to Ed Craneball leading off the eighth inning.
- 2:02:07We'll tell you a little bit about Gil Patterson as we go along.
- 2:02:10He's from Philadelphia, Bill White country.
- 2:02:16Makes his home now in North Miami Beach, Florida.
- 2:02:19He rocks and fires to Craneball and misses inside, ball one.
- 2:02:26Gil Patterson came out of Miami Dade South Junior College.
- 2:02:36Next pitch to Craneball is low for a ball.
- 2:02:41Craneball bounced back to the pitcher. Jim Beatty his first time up.
- 2:02:47Patterson, a right hander, rocks over the rubber and the pitch to the left hand hitting Craneball is popped up in the middle of the diamond.
- 2:02:53In comes Sandy Ottomar.
- 2:02:55Andre and Ottomar takes it one away.
- 2:03:04Gil Patterson was the Yankees' number one selection in the secondary phase of the June draft of pre-agent draft of last year.
- 2:03:14Chosen by Pat Gillick.
- 2:03:16He was drafted four times before he finally signed with the Yankees last year.
- 2:03:21He was with the Yankees in spring training this season.
- 2:03:25He's ready to work now to Mike Vail, the right fielder.
- 2:03:27Vail bounces one slowly down the third base line charging in Stanley and he feels it in foul territory.
- 2:03:33He would not have had a play on Vail.
- 2:03:36Vail will come back and try it again.
- 2:03:40Vail coming back from a leg injury.
- 2:03:44He like Elliot Maddox making his first appearance in a ball game this year.
- 2:03:59Vail suffered a dislocated right foot playing basketball during the off season.
- 2:04:05And he has been on the disabled list.
- 2:04:09No balls and a strike on him as Gil Patterson looks in for a sign from Rick Dempsey.
- 2:04:14The rock, the kick and the breaking ball is over.
- 2:04:17Strike two.
- 2:04:19Gil Patterson led the New York Penn League in strikeouts at Oney Otter last season.
- 2:04:25He struck out 97 men in 106 innings, posting an 8-4 record.
- 2:04:32This pitch is low and away.
- 2:04:34His earned run average last year was below 2.
- 2:04:36It was 1.95.
- 2:04:37And with 97 strikeouts, he walked only 33.
- 2:04:43He deals one and two to Vail who fouls it back in the upper deck and out of play.
- 2:04:53Patterson started out as an outfielder, turned to pitching.
- 2:04:55And when he wasn't pitching for Miami Dade South College, he was their designated hitter.
- 2:05:03He's 6'1", 185 pounds, 21 years of age.
- 2:05:17Gil Patterson ready with a 1-2 pitch to Vail.
- 2:05:19Here it is at his changeup.
- 2:05:21This is low, two balls and two strikes.
- 2:05:312-2 offering.
- 2:05:33Bounce foul at the plate, came up and hit Vail in the middle of the back.
- 2:05:43The on deck hitter for the Mets is Bruce Beauclair.
- 2:05:52The Yankees are out in front by a score of 8-4.
- 2:05:54We're in the top half of the eighth inning, 14th annual Mayor's Trophy game.
- 2:05:58The wind up by Gil Patterson, 2-2 pitch is popped up on the left side.
- 2:06:02Shortstop Mason is under it, back in the left field grass and Mason makes the catch.
- 2:06:08Two out.
- 2:06:10Now Bruce Beauclair.
- 2:06:20The only starters for the Mets still in the ballgame are Roy Steger at third base
- 2:06:25and Jake Cleven, the catcher.
- 2:06:28Beauclair replaced John Milner in left field, left hand batter and he takes low, ball one.
- 2:06:38The Yankees are out in front, 8-4.
- 2:06:41The wind, the kick, the pitch coming, fouled away in the third base seats.
- 2:06:51In the all-star game preceding this one played this afternoon, the junior Yankees defeated the junior Mets 4-1.
- 2:06:59I'll tell you more about it in a moment.
- 2:07:00Right now, 1-1 pitch to Beauclair and he bounces a foul past the first base dugout.
- 2:07:06The Lou Gehrig Award for the most valuable player went to Ted Perednia of Susan Wagner High School on Staten Island.
- 2:07:14He had two hits in the ballgame and he was awarded the Lou Gehrig Award.
- 2:07:17That was Ted Perednia and the Max Case Award went to Pete Gawando.
- 2:07:24He's a pitcher from Long Island City YMCA League.
- 2:07:28Ball is hit in the air to left center field.
- 2:07:30Ranging to his left is Kerry Dennean.
- 2:07:32He waits and he takes.
- 2:07:34Three up, three down.
- 2:07:35At the end of 7-1-1, the score, the Yankees 8 and the Mets 4.

- 2:08:48Pete Gawando from Long Island City YMCA League.
- 2:08:51He went to Bishop Laughlin High School in Brooklyn.
- 2:08:54So those are the two winners of the awards this afternoon.
- 2:08:57The Lou Gehrig Award to Ted Perednia of Susan Wagner High School.
- 2:09:02And the Max Case Award to Pete Gawando of Bishop Laughlin High School in Brooklyn.
- 2:09:08Well, right now we're ready to go to the bottom half of the eighth inning.
- 2:09:11And here's the scooter.
- 2:09:13All right, Frank, thank you for taking over for that half inning.
- 2:09:16Had to talk with Mike Ciani about that golf tournament.
- 2:09:19Jim Mason, 0-2.
- 2:09:23Jim has scored twice in the ballgame.
- 2:09:25Walk once, takes a pitch inside, ball once.
- 2:09:27We're in the bottom of the eighth inning.
- 2:09:29And the Yankees have a four-run lead.
- 2:09:34On deck, Oscar Gamble.
- 2:09:37Swing and a miss by Mason, 1-1.
- 2:09:40You know, we've been talking about this being the 14th annual Mayor's Trophy game,
- 2:09:43and you talk about playing in this San La benefit game.
- 2:09:46We'll explain that in just a moment.
- 2:09:50Strike two on the outside corner.
- 2:09:52Because this game started between the Yankees and the Giants at the Polo Grounds in 1946.
- 2:09:58I don't believe it was called the Mayor's Trophy game, though, then, was it?
- 2:10:01No.
- 2:10:03It was a San La benefit game, I believe.
- 2:10:06Fly ball left field.
- 2:10:07Boy Claire right there and makes the catch.
- 2:10:101-up.
- 2:10:13In fact, there were two games in 1946.
- 2:10:16One at the Polo Grounds, which the Yankees won 3-0.
- 2:10:19And one here at Yankee Stadium, which the Yankees won 3-2.
- 2:10:26Johnny Mize suffered a broken hand in that second benefit game that year.
- 2:10:30That's right. He got hit with a pitch.
- 2:10:32And as a matter of fact, the umpire didn't award him first base.
- 2:10:34He didn't think Mize was hit.
- 2:10:36Is that right? Yep.
- 2:10:37And he had a broken hand.
- 2:10:38Broken hand. Oscar Gamble, who has singled in Homer and driven in three runs in the game.
- 2:10:43He and Carlos May in a tight race for the most valuable player of this game.
- 2:10:47Carlos May is 4-4 with three runs about an inch.
- 2:10:51And the curve is low 2-0.
- 2:10:55I believe the Yankees only played the Dodgers twice in this benefit series.
- 2:10:58Yes, that's right. It was mostly the Giants and now the Mets.
- 2:11:05And Oscar going for another home and swings and misses 2-1.
- 2:11:09They played one game at Ebbets Field. The Yankees won that one 10-3.
- 2:11:12Al Seacott, my usual winning pitcher. And Mickey Maddell hit a home run.
- 2:11:17Strike two, 2-2.
- 2:11:19Played one game against the Dodgers out at the LA Coliseum in 1959.
- 2:11:30A 2-2 pitch, low and it's 3-2.
- 2:11:34On deck, Thurman Munson.
- 2:11:36That was that benefit game that drew 93,000 people.
- 2:11:39Yes.
- 2:11:40Major League record.
- 2:11:41And...
- 2:11:42To the mistake.
- 2:11:43I think they honored Roy Campanella that night.
- 2:11:45Yes.
- 2:11:46Put all the lights out and everybody lit a match. It was beautiful.
- 2:11:49Strike three.
- 2:11:50Gamble goes down swinging.
- 2:11:53Two men out.
- 2:11:54And a bat of Thurman Munson.
- 2:11:56Thurman's been a bat once in a single.
- 2:12:14Oh, look at the on deck hitter.
- 2:12:16Catfish Hondo with a... He's gotta be kidding because Carlos May is 4-4.
- 2:12:22Oh, he bat for Pennella.
- 2:12:23Oh, he's gonna bat for Pennella.
- 2:12:25Munson swings and misses strike one. Two men out.
- 2:12:28I just want Munson to get on and keep the inning alive so we can see the fish come up.
- 2:12:32He was a good hitter.
- 2:12:33He was a good hitting pitcher.
- 2:12:36The one strike delivery. Change up, hit back towards the middle.
- 2:12:39Back at... booted by the second baseman to throw. Safe at first.
- 2:12:44An error for the second baseman. Garrett now will give Catfish Hunter a chance to bat.
- 2:12:51Billy Martin with a big grin on his face.
- 2:12:55Now listen, Bill. Who but Billy Martin would have thought to use Catfish Hunter, a pitcher, as a pinch hitter in this ballgame?
- 2:13:01That's true.
- 2:13:03An added bonus for the fans tonight.
- 2:13:05Yes, it is.
- 2:13:06And as you mentioned, he was not a bad hitting pitcher.
- 2:13:09But it's the first time he's batted in a long time.
- 2:13:13Listen to the elevation.
- 2:13:19By Catfish Hunter, Yankees leading 8-4.
- 2:13:24Takes the pitch inside ball one.
- 2:13:29He has a lifetime batting average of 227, which is high for a pitcher.
- 2:13:33Yes, it is.
- 2:13:34He's got six home runs and 51 runs batted in.
- 2:13:36Oh, they like that. He's down the end of the bat.
- 2:13:38Half-grounded a short, but up with it. Phillips splits to Garrett for the fourth play.
- 2:13:44No runs, no hits, an error and a man left.
- 2:13:46At the end of 8, the Yankees 8 and the Mets 4.
- 2:13:49If all you need is money, come on in to HFC.
- 2:13:53Come on in. Come on in. Come on in to HFC.
- 2:14:00For the things you want, see HFC, an equal opportunity lender.

- 2:14:44They're pleased to meet you. Paglio.
- 2:14:46Just a note, Paglio.
- 2:14:55Well, Gil Patterson will be working on the Mets as we go to the ninth inning.
- 2:14:59Roy Steger is due to lead off.
- 2:15:01And a quick reminder of some of the gift days coming up.
- 2:15:04There'll be one on the Yankees' next home stand.
- 2:15:06That'll be Saturday, June 26th, when the Yankees play the Milwaukee Brewers.
- 2:15:10A t-shirt for every fan, 14 and under.
- 2:15:13Then up on July 11th, jacket day, with a very fine vinyl jacket for every youngster.
- 2:15:18And the annual bat day will be held on August 22nd, when the Yankees play the California Angels.
- 2:15:23Both jacket and bat day will be on Sunday, shirt day, on Saturday, June 26th.
- 2:15:28Scooter.
- 2:15:30All right, Roy Steger is 0 for 3. He's bounced a short all three times.
- 2:15:36And the pitch is fouled off, strike one.
- 2:15:42This is the top of the ninth. The Yankees leading 8-4.
- 2:15:46Oh, you can have a lot of fun when your team's in first place in the American League East.
- 2:15:50And you got a 4-run lead in the ninth inning.
- 2:15:53Strike two.
- 2:15:55This Patterson's got unusual kind of delivery.
- 2:16:02He winds.
- 2:16:05Not overhand and not sidearm, but he kind of slingshots the ball.
- 2:16:09One ball, two strikes.
- 2:16:25The pitch is just outside 2-2.
- 2:16:31On deck, Leon Brown.
- 2:16:34So a real good crowd here tonight. Over 36,000. There's a foul back and out of play on a check swing.
- 2:16:42Maxwell counts, Scooter, on the attendance, 36,361.
- 2:16:46Good. I'd like to have seen it more, but we're very happy with that.
- 2:16:51Benefit the youngsters in the Sandlot program of the greater metropolitan area.
- 2:16:57The 2-2 pitch curve bounced a short.
- 2:17:00Up with it, Mason. A long throw. They got him.
- 2:17:04Carlos May really has had a fine night at first base.
- 2:17:09Come up with some dazzling plays. Here's Leon Brown.
- 2:17:16Brown is 1-2 on the night.
- 2:17:28And on deck, the young catcher for the Mets, who's had a fine night.
- 2:17:34He's 2-2 and has driven in two runs.
- 2:17:38Strike one. Brown held up on a curve that nicked the corner.
- 2:17:48The one-strike pitch changeup. Oh, and he had him pulled way out in front of swinging a missed strike, too.
- 2:17:57I think Billy Martin should be quite happy with Elliot Maddox's job here tonight.
- 2:18:03Elliot had two walks, didn't get a base hit in three times that bat, and that's strike three.
- 2:18:08Fastball nicked the outside corner.
- 2:18:13And now Jay Cleven, a single right in the second inning, driving in two runs, walked in the fifth, and Singleton scored in the seventh.
- 2:18:26Two out, nobody on, 8-4, the Yankees lead in the ninth.
- 2:18:30Big slow curve, high and tight ball one.
- 2:18:41Outside ball two.
- 2:18:51A 2-0 delivery is hit in the air to right field. Gamble moving back.
- 2:18:56And one hands the ball on the warning track to end the ballgame.
- 2:19:00Three up, three down. The final score, the Yankees 8 and the Mets 4.
- 2:19:06A world leader in miniaturized electronics presents a new kind of digital timepiece.

- 2:20:30The running pitcher will be Jim Deedy.
- 2:20:33And the losing pitcher will be Rick Baldwin.
- 2:20:36Baldwin gave up six runs, only two of them were earned because of an error out in right field by Vail.
- 2:20:42But he has to take the loss.
- 2:20:44The attendance tonight paid $36,361.
- 2:20:49And I'll be back with tonight's awards in just one minute.
- 2:20:54If you're a real beer drinker, use your imagination.
- 2:21:01Think of the single best tasting beer you've ever had.
- 2:21:05Now imagine that every beer since then has tasted exactly the same.
- 2:21:10What's the point?
- 2:21:11The point is that Schaeffer people get that consistently great taste every single Schaeffer.
- 2:21:16Why? Because Schaeffer's croissants brew twice the old world way.
- 2:21:21Since 1842, this extra step has given Schaeffer a crisp, fresh, consistently great beer taste Schaeffer after Schaeffer.
- 2:21:29So if your next beer isn't the single greatest tasting beer you've ever had, go out and get a Schaeffer.
- 2:21:36And you'll be Schaeffer people too.
- 2:21:38Go out and get a Schaeffer and you'll be Schaeffer people too.
- 2:21:45Go out and get a Schaeffer and you'll be Schaeffer people too.
- 2:21:51F&M Schaeffer Brewing Company, New York, New York.
- 2:21:57Well, the Schaeffer Star of the Gamepoint Award will look like this.
- 2:22:01Number one star with five points will be Carlos May.
- 2:22:04He had a perfect night at the plate, four singles and four trips, and he had four runs batted in.
- 2:22:09And Carlos May also played an excellent game at first base for the Yankees defensively.
- 2:22:14So Carlos May receives five points. Oscar Gamble will receive three points.
- 2:22:20Oscar had a single and a two-run homer in the ballgame.
- 2:22:24And the number three star with two points will be the young right-hander who finished the ballgame up for the New York Yankees, Gil Patterson.
- 2:22:32Patterson pitched two perfect innings, retired the side in order in the eighth and the ninth.
- 2:22:37So Gil Patterson will receive two points.
- 2:22:40Tonight's winning Yankee pitcher is Jim Beatty.
- 2:22:42And for Jim and his family, gift certificates, compliments of Jack in the Box,
- 2:22:46where he can take life a little bit easier at Jack in the Box restaurants.

- 2:22:58Five and six came in, the game-winning hit.
- 2:23:01A single to center field in the fourth inning as he delivered Oscar Gamble and Elliot Maddox.
- 2:23:09So Carlos May receives a gift basket filled with Palio Ricotte, mozzarella, and other fine Palio products.
- 2:23:16And tonight's Butterfinger Fielding Award goes to Mickey Rivers.
- 2:23:20Mickey Rivers made an outstanding running catch to retire Dave Kingman in the very first inning of the ballgame.
- 2:23:25We have a star down by that.
- 2:23:27So Mickey Rivers receives the Butterfinger Fielding Award, and Mickey sure earned his Butterfinger.
