- 0:53Righty, here we are with Melissa, With Franco saddles.
- 0:57Yep, Franco saddles Franco. Saddles.
- 1:01Well, thanks for coming out here.
- 1:03Glad to be here. So we met at the NFR week.
- 1:08Yep, at the Horseshoe convention, the Roper
- 1:11Convention. Yeah, random because I shouldn't
- 1:14have been there really. Well, the virus shut down our
- 1:17all in barrel race that we were supposed to be on the floor.
- 1:20Oh. Yeah.
- 1:22So we didn't get to go there, but we ended up just at least
- 1:25getting our name out there in the marketplace.
- 1:27And yeah, and then there you were.
- 1:29Yeah, yeah, I think you guys were like the first booth that
- 1:31we visited. Yeah, they kind of they, they
- 1:34got us in there in an extra room, so they had to divert
- 1:37traffic. And yeah, we tripped up a whole
- 1:39bunch of people with our saddle stands.
- 1:41Really. Yeah.
- 1:42Oh yeah. Well, that's how you get to your
- 1:43attention, huh? Yeah, you have to walk around
- 1:45us. Yeah, that's right.
- 1:46That's awesome. Well, it didn't help either that
- 1:48like, they have big signs. Oh my gosh.
- 1:51Excuse me? They had big signs saying like
- 1:53you could win a saddle. And I'm like.
- 1:56I'm in. Sign me up.
- 1:58And then, yeah, so I was like, then we stood and we chit
- 2:02chatted. Gosh, forever.
- 2:04It felt like it was. It was great.
- 2:05It was. Really, really nice.
- 2:06I got to meet a ton of people. They didn't get to do what we
- 2:09normally do, which is like fitting horses and letting
- 2:11people try them and ride them and make a run in them and stuff
- 2:14like that. But yeah, we got to meet a lot
- 2:16of people and a lot of contacts, and this being one of them.
- 2:19And I mean well. That's kind of what you want to
- 2:21do at those events, right? It's like just get your name out
- 2:24there. And especially since this was
- 2:25our first, like our launch, 'cause I know I got down here in
- 2:29November, vesicular stomatitis and then EHV and then the floods
- 2:33and I didn't get to go anywhere. So our first actual launch was
- 2:36at the NFR. So it was a little bit
- 2:37intimidating. Wow, yeah.
- 2:39Dude, that's awesome. It's like, I know you guys
- 2:42haven't a clue who we are, but here we are.
- 2:43I'm going to. I'm going to trip you up on the
- 2:45way. By heck yeah.
- 2:46'Cause how long has Franco been around?
- 2:49The tree itself has been worked on for about 10 or 11 years.
- 2:53I was over in New Zealand teaching a clinic and I got to
- 2:56ride. This lady asked if I could ride
- 2:57in a saddle. And I'm like, well, I don't got
- 2:58my own, so sure, I'll get in it. And I got in it and I was like,
- 3:02what is this? And she's like, it's mine.
- 3:05So she was a saddle fitter by trade.
- 3:07She worked for Martin. She works for masters, she works
- 3:10for all kinds of saddle companies, just getting
- 3:12frustrated on, you know, her background of saddle fitting and
- 3:15then decided to try and make her own tree.
- 3:17And then she tried it and tested it and tried it and tested it
- 3:19and working on the patent and all of that stuff.
- 3:22And then all of a sudden she's like, could it was, what do you
- 3:26call it? Timing?
- 3:28Just timing because I was over there and she was like, that's
- 3:31my Ave. to North America. So she's from Brazil, lives in
- 3:35New Zealand. I was like, could you see if
- 3:37there's any interest? I said, yeah, I I can do that.
- 3:41I said, but I'm going to tell you right now, our weather
- 3:43conditions are going to be tough for you because Brazil and New
- 3:47Zealand don't have that cold winter.
- 3:48And we've had a lot of saddles and come up to Canada and, and
- 3:51they warp in the cold and that kind of thing.
- 3:54I said, I'm not going to be nice to it and I'm just going to
- 3:56leave it in the horse trailer. It's going to leave it 40 below
- 3:58or 40 above. I don't care.
- 4:00And she's like, Yep. And it survived and and I and
- 4:05teaching clinics and watching movement because my background
- 4:07is farrier. I was a figure skating coach as
- 4:09a massage therapist. I was all this other stuff.
- 4:11So to watch the movement of stuff and I compete in barrel
- 4:14racing. So it's like, why did that girl
- 4:16beat me? That's because her horse moves
- 4:17better than mine, right? So or horse does one thing
- 4:21different. So the the keen movement of it
- 4:23all. And then doing riding, teaching
- 4:25riding lessons and stuff like that, I got her like, I got
- 4:29riders that kind of lean forward and, and pitch their shoulders
- 4:31forward and I'm always telling them, you know, tits out, tits
- 4:34out, right? And pull your shoulders back, be
- 4:35proud of what you got. And I, I put them in the saddle
- 4:39and all of a sudden they're sitting up straight and they're
- 4:41riding good. And I'm like, wow, there's
- 4:44something to this. So yeah, went through the
- 4:47rigmarole of, you know, kind of introducing it to North America
- 4:49and Canada. We did really good there.
- 4:51And it's like, OK, I think we might have our shit together and
- 4:54let's see what the big pond plays like.
- 4:56So, so when you when you say she's been working on a tree,
- 5:00that's like the base of the saddle, correct?
- 5:02And is that the most important part of the saddle?
- 5:05In my opinion, yeah. Because I mean, we can cover it
- 5:07with leather and different factories and different
- 5:09decorations and all of that stuff.
- 5:10But the base of that tree, it's handmade, it's wrapped in
- 5:14rawhide, it's strong. We're not going to compete with
- 5:17the lightweights like the 8 pounders and stuff like that
- 5:20'cause we're actual material. But yeah, the tree of the saddle
- 5:25is close contact. It's made for women, made for
- 5:29men. It's, it's beautiful.
- 5:32Yeah, yeah. Freeze up a shoulder, you know,
- 5:35And if we don't, if we can't fit your horse, I'll eat my own boot
- 5:38because we can custom fit that tree to any horse because we're
- 5:43hand making them anyways, so we don't care.
- 5:46Now, are they being handmade in Brazil or in New Zealand?
- 5:49No, in Brazil, everything's built in Brazil, OK.
- 5:52A lot of our saddle companies are in Brazil, right?
- 5:54Like we're in the same factory as our women's saddles, I think
- 5:57is Martin, there's a bunch of them.
- 5:59I haven't actually been into that factory.
- 6:02Our old factory was like National Roper Supply and other
- 6:05people were in there too. I'm not sure who's left in
- 6:07there, but different qualities of leather, different
- 6:11decorations like it, it makes the job form really confusing,
- 6:15right, Because the options are here and the options are there,
- 6:17Yeah. That like, you know, coming into
- 6:20this, you know, into like horses and everything, there's so much
- 6:24freaking information. It's overwhelming.
- 6:26It is, it's like very overwhelming.
- 6:28And when I started looking into like saddle fitting and all this
- 6:32stuff, it's like. You might have to learn Swahili
- 6:36'cause it's. Like, yeah, yeah, and everybody.
- 6:38Tells you something different too.
- 6:40And then and, and some things not in with the saddles and
- 6:43stuff like that, but like there are some things that you'll hear
- 6:465 different ways of doing it. So there's not just one way of
- 6:50doing something when it comes to horses, but everybody's like my
- 6:52way is the best way. Everybody has their opinion and
- 6:55I mean, there's room for absolutely everyone in this
- 6:57industry. I mean, there's over 15,000
- 6:59barrel saddles sold in the US, not counting rope saddles and
- 7:02all the rest of that jazz. There's room for everybody.
- 7:06But I always tell people the horse won't lie.
- 7:08It'll be an absolute yes or an absolute no when you get in that
- 7:11saddle, if it fits correctly. And you, you know, I can I just
- 7:15educate. Everybody makes the right
- 7:16decision for them and their horse in the right feel.
- 7:18And yeah, it's overwhelming. And I'll be honest, I didn't
- 7:21know. Shit.
- 7:22About that, I'm like, well, this one's comfy, right?
- 7:25This one's good. I didn't fall out of that one,
- 7:27so that one must be all right. Like right.
- 7:29I mean, I had my saddle that I was comfortable in and now I'm
- 7:32kind of a complete saddle snub. Like, Oh my God, what's all that
- 7:37between my knees? Like, oh, my horse moves like
- 7:39crap. Like, you know, little things
- 7:41like that. And we get a lot of like the
- 7:43saddle fit and stuff. Social media is a detriment to a
- 7:47lot of it, right? So that's why I'm very adamant
- 7:50about get in the arena, get in the saddle, put it on your
- 7:53horse. You know your horse better than
- 7:54anybody. Get in it and feel it.
- 7:57Yeah. If you don't like it, that's
- 7:59good. Maybe we can adjust something or
- 8:01maybe you just don't like it or that's not what you're used to.
- 8:04But there's an absolute yes when you feel the right and, and most
- 8:07people don't know what right feels like because they don't,
- 8:10they don't know. So quick story, I'm teaching in
- 8:15New Zealand and got this girl there.
- 8:16She's a beautiful rider. You've got a really nice horse.
- 8:19The horse seems really broke, like everything's working good,
- 8:22but something was miscommunicating along the way.
- 8:24So she's trying to get her horse to sit, squeeze, woe, stop.
- 8:28And the horse is kind of like pitching forward and she has to
- 8:31get after him to bring him back. And I'm like, I'm not there to
- 8:35do saddles, I'm there to teach. So I got to, I can't put that
- 8:38hat on till she opens that door. And so she finally opened the
- 8:43door at the end of the day and I'm like, oh, I'm so glad you
- 8:46asked. Right, because I think.
- 8:47This is a saddle. I think it's a saddle issue
- 8:50because I mean, the riders good, the horse is good and it's just
- 8:52like they're getting so frustrated in their own stuff,
- 8:55like maybe it's me or maybe it's this and I'm like it's a.
- 8:57Tool, Yeah. It's, it's your tools, right?
- 9:00If it's the wrong bit, we change them so.
- 9:03And in New Zealand, everything is super expensive because
- 9:06everything gets shipped from North America.
- 9:07So then you add that on top of all the cost.
- 9:09And, and so she's trying a different saddle and I'm like, I
- 9:12like those saddles. I wrote in one for a lot of
- 9:14years and I love it. I said, try it.
- 9:16It's cheaper than a new one. And then Nancy was over there,
- 9:19Nancy Franco, like the builder of the saddle itself.
- 9:23And I said, do you have these trees?
- 9:25Because there's a couple of horses that I think would fit.
- 9:27If you're there, you can do the saddle stuff.
- 9:29And she's like, OK, I'll bring them.
- 9:32So Ellen, I'm going to use a real name.
- 9:37And Ellen's riding around in this saddle.
- 9:38They used one. And I'm like, what are you
- 9:40doing, Ellen? And she's like, oh, you know, it
- 9:42feels nice. And Kate, I said, Ellen, run
- 9:47down the arena, stop your horse. Horse does the same thing, like
- 9:50kind of hollows out in the back and can't get her back.
- 9:53And she kind of pops up in the air.
- 9:54And I'm like, OK, like the horse didn't lie.
- 9:56The horse answered the question whether that's how to quit
- 9:59thinking about it. Nancy just pulled in.
- 10:01Go get a saddle from her. So she comes back in the arena
- 10:05and riding around and I'm like, Ellen, what are you doing?
- 10:09Like get down the arena, run down the arena, stop your horse.
- 10:15And she kind of rolls her eyes at me because she's like, man,
- 10:17you're like, I'm, I'm just a, a no bullshit kind of girl.
- 10:20Like it's like either a yes or no.
- 10:21Like it's black and white. I mean, I live in the Gray area,
- 10:24but everything else in my life is black and white.
- 10:26Your farrier. Yeah, like a horse walked away
- 10:28with a limp or walked away clearly, right?
- 10:30The horse, the foot. Yeah, all of it.
- 10:33So she runs down the arena. That horse just coils up and
- 10:35steps into reverse. And she turns and she looks at
- 10:38me and she's like, I'm like, it's either fuck yes, fuck no,
- 10:41there's no in between. So now you know what Wright
- 10:44feels like. And I turn around and I go do my
- 10:46other thing, like what I was doing over here.
- 10:47And it was like, she'll make that decision for herself.
- 10:51I don't need to. She felt what Wright felt like.
- 10:54That's what I've been trying to get through to her for the last
- 10:56couple of days at the clinic. She felt it.
- 10:59Now it's up to her. So.
- 11:01And that's usually what I do like.
- 11:02We rent the arena, we buy snacks.
- 11:03We tell people to come on in, I'll help you with your saddle.
- 11:06You can try our saddles. You can do whatever you want.
- 11:08It's all free. Yeah.
- 11:09Come ride. That's it.
- 11:12That's all we do over and over again.
- 11:15We meet lots of people. You want to fix your headphones.
- 11:17Oh yeah, your hair. Oh did I?
- 11:19Did I wreck my hair? It's OK, It's all right.
- 11:22Are we better? Yes.
- 11:23OK, I don't want to stop you in the middle of your story.
- 11:25But I was like, we, we got to help her.
- 11:27Yeah, we. Can't.
- 11:28We can't. Yeah, we can't like.
- 11:30Amateur. No, we just can't.
- 11:32I mean, I do that. I'm like, except these
- 11:34headphones man, They being a girl's heart.
- 11:37Sometimes, yeah. Exhausting.
- 11:39I can't relate, but I could only imagine.
- 11:42Yeah, you know, I have a cool idea for you.
- 11:46OK, so over at Duns Arena, you could rent out Duns Arena for
- 11:51like 2 hours for $100. Sweet.
- 11:54So I think that'd be awesome for you to, you know, hey, put it
- 11:58out there. Hey, on this day I'm going to
- 12:00rent out Dunn's Arena for two hours.
- 12:02Bring your horse. I got some saddles if you want
- 12:04to try them out and they could just ride them in the arena.
- 12:07Yeah, 'cause I was going to ask do you if you do any clinics
- 12:10here? I haven't done any clinics here
- 12:11yet. I mean, in the grand scheme of
- 12:14things, I'm really a nobody in the US like you guys are.
- 12:16You guys are huge. Like we get intimidated by the
- 12:18Palm, like I'm dipping my foot in right now.
- 12:21And. I mean, not that I'm not
- 12:23successful where it came from. I work a lot so I don't get to
- 12:28go out and be that, you know, Ashley Schaefer and all of those
- 12:32girls. I would love to whether my
- 12:34talent OR my horses are quite as high as that.
- 12:36But yeah, no, I'm, I'm in for anything.
- 12:40I do clinics. I was, I kind of don't like to
- 12:43step in when I see something and I did the other day and I almost
- 12:47felt bad about it. And I don't know if I offended
- 12:48people, but I'm like, can I help you for just a second?
- 12:51Once I please, there's sometimes like as long as you're being
- 12:55nice about it and you're not making me feel like a total
- 12:58buffoon because like we're still new into this.
- 13:01I've been writing consistently for like the last two years,
- 13:06almost three years, 2 1/2 years. And every day my my seats
- 13:10getting better. Like I was taking lessons for a
- 13:12little bit, but I was only going once or twice a week.
- 13:14So I just feel like I wasn't progressing.
- 13:17And now that I've been able to ride, gosh, four to five times a
- 13:21week for the last year and a half, it's completely different.
- 13:25But I know that there are still things that I need to change.
- 13:27So like, if somebody's going to be nice about it, I am all for
- 13:31the constructive criticism. Yeah, you're not there as a
- 13:33coach. You're never there to cut
- 13:36somebody down. You're there to build them,
- 13:37right? And I find a lot of girls
- 13:39forget, I mean, maybe not here because they don't have that
- 13:41experience here, but at home, sometimes it's like, how did you
- 13:46do? Because like when you're wearing
- 13:47a coach hat, your only measure of success is going to come from
- 13:51how your students do, not how good you are in the arena
- 13:55because that doesn't matter when you're a coach.
- 13:56That's a different. That's a different game.
- 13:58Yeah, so. So when you say home, are you,
- 14:01are you from like as you mentioned Canada, I'm from
- 14:03Canada, so do? You I'm down here on a visa.
- 14:05Gotcha. Yeah, because I was going to
- 14:07say, are you here seasonally? Are you just here?
- 14:09I'm I'm here to whatever the company needs now, right.
- 14:13So that's kind of cool. Home base is still Canada.
- 14:17That's where my dog is. That's where my house is yeah.
- 14:21But yeah, I'm, I'm freewheeling now I, I'm supposed to take I
- 14:25got training horses in so they're going home April.
- 14:29I keep a few of them, take some and return them, and then, yeah.
- 14:33And then I just float. Like if I've got an ambassador
- 14:36or a Rep down here that needs help, I jump a plane or I get in
- 14:39the truck and off we go. Yeah.
- 14:41So I'm trying to build everything from the ground up at
- 14:44this point. So how many, how many of you
- 14:47guys is here for with Franco Saddles right now?
- 14:50Just me. Just you, yeah.
- 14:53And then the and then the builder.
- 14:55And then the builder, yeah. And I've got my chief operator
- 14:57in Canada. I've got a few reps and like
- 14:59I've got three or four or five maybe we're working there in
- 15:02Canada doing it because you just the four events, lots of
- 15:07saddles, lots of miles, you can't do it alone.
- 15:11So I've got that one kind of set and steady and got our, you
- 15:14know, North America stuff like, you know, we're split between
- 15:17finances and Canada finances in the US, all of that stuff.
- 15:20And now here I am looking for who wants to be involved at the
- 15:23saddle company, who wants to have a second part time job or
- 15:26full time job or whatever you choose to do.
- 15:29And I feel like everybody wins if everybody's doing it.
- 15:33And that's my coaching aspect coming back, right?
- 15:36Like I don't, I'm only as good as my team is.
- 15:39So now I'm trying to develop that team, right?
- 15:41So I've got a few good contacts from the NFR.
- 15:43So I go to Wisconsin, I go to Michigan, I'm going to
- 15:45Louisiana. And I'm, I figured Arizona is
- 15:48probably my best place to meet people from all over, Yeah.
- 15:52'Cause they all come here, 'cause they all.
- 15:53Come here and then and I'll be honest, I'm scared of Texas, I
- 15:56mean. I don't.
- 15:58I don't blame you. I'm scared of Texas.
- 16:00Super intimidating. Texas.
- 16:01I want to be afraid of Texas. I'm afraid of Texas only for the
- 16:04fact that that's when you got to have your shit together, right?
- 16:08That's when you can't have those little blips and those little,
- 16:11you know, the little whoops here in the little bike.
- 16:13Oh, did I, did I forget that or did I do that?
- 16:16Like as a business person, things when you get to Texas go
- 16:20big and not that we don't have a great product that I think that
- 16:24they could go, you know, team ropers, breakaway ropers, all of
- 16:27that. Like my ambassador is actually
- 16:29in school for breakaway roping. She's in school in Texas.
- 16:32Amazing kid. I love her about her by
- 16:35accident, which is perfect. And I'm ready.
- 16:40But I'm not. I'm.
- 16:42I'm. I hope I'm ready.
- 16:43Yeah. Does that make sense?
- 16:44Yeah. Yeah.
- 16:44Well, I think that's like smart, right, Because you got to kind
- 16:47of be strategic on how you move about growing a business and
- 16:52growing a brand. Growing it and I don't want the,
- 16:54I don't want the negative. I we're going to get the
- 16:57negative because I mean, that's just part of it.
- 17:00But how to keep it? Where it's not an influence to
- 17:03people attempting to try it or scrolling past us on social
- 17:06media or or. Right.
- 17:08Yeah. And they do a lot of events,
- 17:10like Ashton Sheridan Sun just came back from Texas and he went
- 17:14to a few like Big Food charity events.
- 17:16Oh, that's right. Yeah.
- 17:17So like, I feel like, 'cause they do a lot of futurity events
- 17:21there in Texas. So it would be, I mean, yeah,
- 17:25they are everywhere. But I feel like, I don't know,
- 17:26I've been seeing a lot of things in Texas and I'm like, Dang, but
- 17:30you know, I totally. I get where you're.
- 17:31Coming like once I grow up, I want to be there.
- 17:33Yeah, yeah. Those are the Texas is the big
- 17:36dogs. Texas is the big dogs.
- 17:39Exactly. And, and they know it, right?
- 17:41But they're welcoming and they're friendly.
- 17:43Like you can go to barrel racing all over the place.
- 17:45I've been, I know when I had my other, when I was competing off
- 17:49my other gelding, he's old now. And, and we had winds in 4
- 17:52provinces and five states like we were, we were hauling.
- 17:55And the girls in the South like in, in the US were like so
- 17:59friendly. And I'm like, are they going to
- 18:01splash my tires? No, they're actually, they're
- 18:03actually nice. They're like, Oh my God, you
- 18:04drove all that way. And I'm like, I, we live in
- 18:07Canada, man. We're driving like we live.
- 18:10We don't have that. You know, close closeness, like
- 18:15I'm getting to be kind of a little bit old now, like a drive
- 18:17every day for Ferrier work and I don't want to get back in the
- 18:20truck and drive again. Like where's the closest barrel
- 18:22race I can hit? So is, so this is so you are a
- 18:27full time failure. In Canada in.
- 18:29Canada, you try not to because it takes up too much of my
- 18:32daylight hours here. Yeah, and it's like a really
- 18:34busy time here, so I can't. And people are always looking
- 18:37for. Yeah, they're always looking and
- 18:39I'll help anybody out. Like if we're at a barrel race
- 18:41and somebody knocks a shoe off or something, I will slap it
- 18:43back on and. We'll go.
- 18:45I have no problems doing any of that stuff.
- 18:46But to commit to being someone's farrier when I'm supposed to
- 18:50commit to this? I know it was getting to the
- 18:53point where the balance is I got to choose one or the other.
- 18:56And I think this. I mean, chucking saddles is a
- 18:59lot easier on your body than climbing underneath some base.
- 19:02Yeah. No, it's I'm going to focus on
- 19:05this here because I got to, right.
- 19:07I just think it's a beautiful, beautiful saddle.
- 19:10And they, they really are. I keep admiring this barrel 1
- 19:14and I was going to ask because are you still competing?
- 19:16Like do you still compete quite often?
- 19:17I try. I mean, I've got young ones here
- 19:19now that, you know, with our stuff in Canada, we got super
- 19:23steaks and I don't want to burn them out.
- 19:24We see so many girls come down to Arizona and they burn their
- 19:26horses out and they get home and they are hot.
- 19:29Like it's like, whoa, that one is going to be a force to be
- 19:32reckoned with. And then by the time you get to
- 19:34September, October, when things really count for us, they're
- 19:37they're powered out. So I'm like, OK, be patient.
- 19:40The season hasn't started yet. The season is not ready yet, you
- 19:43know, So I'm getting these young ones going banking on October,
- 19:48right? So as much as I'd love to be a
- 19:50rock star down here. Yeah, I can't.
- 19:54Like, I just can't put the pressure on those Colts like
- 19:56that. Yeah, totally.
- 19:58I get that. Competing and trying to get wrap
- 20:00your head around ones that got a little a little damage here and
- 20:03a little lazy there. Yeah.
- 20:05How many horses do you have down here 6/6?
- 20:08Too many. Dang, not enough daylight hours
- 20:11for six. I was going to say.
- 20:12Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know. And next year is only going to
- 20:15be 3 or 4. Three or 4.
- 20:17Yeah. And even then, like my kids, my
- 20:19kid comes down and helps all the time.
- 20:21And he's part of the business at home, too.
- 20:22And he's an equine dentist. And, you know, so he's good with
- 20:25the horses. He rode and competed until he
- 20:26went and played hockey. And I I got to go for a week and
- 20:30he's like, OK. And he round pens him for me
- 20:33because his knees are blown from hockey so they can't get back in
- 20:36the saddle. But yeah, he's like six horses.
- 20:39There's too many. Yeah, I I totally agree with
- 20:41you. He goes.
- 20:42I don't even want to cook supper.
- 20:44I get it. There's a Taco truck on every
- 20:46corner here. You are so glad.
- 20:48Yeah, I cannot even imagine 6 right now, especially like
- 20:51having a full time job because. So we had three here.
- 20:55One of them just sold, but I was working all three and my husband
- 21:00didn't realize I had been working 3 and it takes forever.
- 21:05So like I was, I was down for about a week sick and I had him.
- 21:12I was like, is there any chance you can, you can get these
- 21:15horses out for me, please. He didn't realize.
- 21:18He goes after the second one. He goes, shit, I still got one
- 21:23more. Yeah, he goes, you do this every
- 21:26day. And I'm like.
- 21:27Yeah, yeah, we're amazing, right?
- 21:29And he's like, I'm tired. And I said Anne.
- 21:34And not only that, I still come in when I'm done and I make
- 21:37dinner and he goes, Oh my God, I was.
- 21:42Like, yeah, it's. A lot of work.
- 21:43Yeah, they are. And y'all got.
- 21:45Six, I was mad at my phone. I was mad at my phone the other
- 21:48weekend I had to fly home and do furrier work because I have
- 21:51clients up there and I'm like, you know, I can't really like
- 21:53just skip one and not the other, right?
- 21:56Because I'm going to, Yeah. What if I fall on my head?
- 21:59So I fly home for a week and I have 100 and three horses lined
- 22:04up to trim, which is stupid. My limit's 50 a week.
- 22:08But I'm like a coupon Clipper, right?
- 22:11So I go in a miles. So I get.
- 22:13Up there and I go and I get all these horses done and my phone
- 22:16Dings at me because my phone stays in the truck when I'm
- 22:19doing ferry work because the last thing I need is it going
- 22:21off and something jumping on my head.
- 22:23Yeah. My phone Dings and says you've
- 22:26taken a lot less steps this week than last.
- 22:29You're burning way less calories.
- 22:30I was ready to tell Apple to go kiss my ass because it's like,
- 22:33you have no idea just 'cause you're sitting in a truck all
- 22:36day, right? But I'm like kind of offended.
- 22:38But I checked my step count just because I was curious with six
- 22:41horses and, you know, being busy and yeah, I'm sitting about 2025
- 22:45thousand steps a day just giving her with six horses.
- 22:48And I'm like, no wonder my, I'm tired wonder, wonder.
- 22:50My feet hurt. I'm actually wearing out a pair
- 22:52of shoes. I haven't done that before, I
- 22:54think usually last forever, but these ones are cooked there's.
- 22:59Dang in 20. Horses.
- 23:00That's wild. How many days did you do that
- 23:02in? How many days did I do those
- 23:04horses? Yeah, I landed on Thursday.
- 23:07I landed on Thursday and I'm like, OK, so I'm going to just
- 23:10throw my nippers in my carry on bag, right?
- 23:12Cool. Get to the airport.
- 23:14OK, The flights changed in the morning, so I messaged the first
- 23:18client like, I'm going to be landing late.
- 23:20You know, Ding's at 7, I leave at 8:00, we're perfect.
- 23:23I'm going to be an hour late now.
- 23:25Call that guy, message that guy. We're good.
- 23:28Ding, WestJet again says Nope, we're going to be going early
- 23:31now. And I'm like, oh shit, so now
- 23:33wake the kid, get me to the airport.
- 23:35Traffic's terrible. Good just enough time to get
- 23:38through security. They take my nippers and they're
- 23:40like, you can't take these on the plane and I'm like, I'm like
- 23:44what am I going to do bludgeon somebody to death because
- 23:45they're so dull like there's nothing I can't hurt anybody
- 23:49like granny's granny's nail file is going to be more dangerous
- 23:51than my nippers are. No, you can't have them.
- 23:54I tried to give them to the security guard because I'm like,
- 23:56you should take these because they're probably still worth 300
- 23:58bucks like. Yeah.
- 23:59Take him. He's like how?
- 24:00I can't he's you can mail him to yourself.
- 24:02I'm like, yeah, but I won't get back out and back in because I'm
- 24:04going to miss my flight. Yeah.
- 24:05Then I sat on the tarmac for an hour anyways, and then I ended
- 24:07up being. Late.
- 24:08Oh my gosh. So then phone the first client
- 24:10and go like I don't have any nippers.
- 24:13He goes, well, I prepare that you know, I used prior to you 14
- 24:16years ago. I'm like, we should be able to
- 24:18nigh ourselves through some feet.
- 24:19Almost. Get a new set of nippers that
- 24:22I'd already pre-ordered so I was picking them up that night.
- 24:25I get to the first client in the morning, makes it through three
- 24:28feet and they seize. I'm like, the universe is
- 24:32telling me that this isn't my job anymore.
- 24:35I'm like, Oh my God, I made it through the week.
- 24:39And then the new nippers, that Brandy ones that I had to go get
- 24:42after the first set, they ended up chipping after like 30
- 24:45horses. So I sent a picture to the to
- 24:47the supplier and I'm like OK, like the universe is telling me
- 24:52no. Yeah, on Ferrier work anymore
- 24:54and I'm like, I love it. But I don't like being beat up
- 24:58at the end of the day. I was going to say that's got to
- 24:59be so hard on your body, like every time the fair comes out
- 25:04for ours. And yeah, I'll just be chit
- 25:07chatting with him. Like I can hardly handle just
- 25:10picking the feet. You could like my, my back.
- 25:12I'm like, God damn, I could never be a fairy or like my, my
- 25:15back. I am my back.
- 25:16Everybody should know how to. Do it though so I have this one
- 25:19lady at. Home she is cool and she does
- 25:23her own feet. She's 606162 and she was so
- 25:27worried because she had like a a laminitic like metabolic horse
- 25:30and I was like but I'm not going to be here so.
- 25:33She's doing her own. Oh wow, and she can get through
- 25:36four horses herself and I'm like, we got kids that won't
- 25:39even file a toll. But I'll tell you now that her
- 25:42horses have been done by her, they stand way nicer.
- 25:45Really. Yeah, it would be so much nicer
- 25:48if people just. Did that for.
- 25:50Oh my gosh, I would love to learn more about feet.
- 25:52Like we recently just changed farriers and he's been super
- 25:57like educational and he's helping me understand kind of
- 26:01how. I mean we just started with him.
- 26:03So like each time I know I'm going to learn something new and
- 26:05I'm not a hoverer so I don't ever want to make him feel like.
- 26:08You're watching over a hover a. Hover.
- 26:11Yeah, like I don't hover when people are doing work here.
- 26:14Like I just leave him be. That's the first time I've heard
- 26:17of that word cover. Yeah.
- 26:18Maybe cover her. We can make them up.
- 26:22Yeah. Leave me alone, OK?
- 26:25I have my own dictionary, God damn it.
- 26:27Sorry, she can't smell what she's stepping in.
- 26:30Yeah, you're not picking up what I'm putting down.
- 26:32You know what you you give me a lot of?
- 26:34Shit, you're not going to give me some shit too, so.
- 26:38So anyway, you're not a hover. I'm not a hover, so I try not to
- 26:41like, hang out here too long. I'll just kind of come and go,
- 26:46come up with a question, come out.
- 26:47Sometimes just hang out. Sometimes the horses are better
- 26:49when you're not around. Sometimes they're better when
- 26:51you are around. Like, yeah.
- 26:52No mine. I think especially that Palomino
- 26:54over there. I feel like she would be a brat
- 26:56if we hung out too long. Yeah, 'cause you know, they yeah
- 26:59nose and, you know, and they wiggle and, you know, just
- 27:02little things that like irritate your day, especially when you
- 27:05just come from somewhere that's already had like I had a my Kiwi
- 27:10kid that comes in and rides with me in the summers.
- 27:13She's like, I'm just going to call your clients and tell them
- 27:15you died, right? Because I'm getting to the point
- 27:18where I'm like, I just cross eyed and I don't want to drive
- 27:21anymore and I don't want them. I'm getting beat up and she's
- 27:24like, I'm just going to call them and tell them you died.
- 27:26I'm like, please do. And then?
- 27:28I'm like, no, I get, you know, I sleep, I get over it and I get
- 27:31up in the morning and off I go again.
- 27:32And then the next day she's like, I'm just going to call him
- 27:34and tell him. Tell him you died.
- 27:35Like you'd probably be more realistic if you said I landed
- 27:38in jail. Right.
- 27:39Right, right. So yeah, I know, but.
- 27:42Kind of like with a really fun story, right?
- 27:44That way, like she can go back and, 'cause you say Kiwi kid,
- 27:47New Zealand, Yeah, yeah. So just that way she can go back
- 27:51and have a couple stories lined up.
- 27:53Oh. Yeah, we have lots of.
- 27:54Stories, you know? Yeah.
- 27:55'Cause. You get tired, you get
- 27:57overtired, you start thinking, and that's actually kind of
- 28:00where all like this saddle stuff come in because I'm like driving
- 28:02down the road and I'm like, I do, I, I love my life, but I
- 28:05hate my life at the same time, right?
- 28:06Because you're like, you're exhausted, your arms are rubber,
- 28:08your feet hurt. You're, you know.
- 28:10You tweak something, you're sitting in the truck and you're
- 28:12like, you know, like that doesn't feel good.
- 28:14That doesn't feel good. You.
- 28:15I'm learning how to like chiropractor myself as I'm like
- 28:18driving, you know, maybe that's the distracted driving.
- 28:21I don't know, but yeah, we got lots of like I'm sitting there
- 28:25and I'm thinking and I'm my brain is going off and it's
- 28:27like, oh, what if I did this with the saddles and I did this
- 28:31and then we, you know, and all those bad ideas and risks come
- 28:37to the surface. Like it's kind of like the.
- 28:40You've siphoned them all out and now all the big rocks are at the
- 28:42top. And yeah, the saddles stayed at
- 28:45the top with all those dumb ideas that start rolling through
- 28:48but like, don't give me. Don't give me rain to be the
- 28:52leader of the pack when I'm overtired, because the dumb
- 28:56ideas will. Shine, Yeah, yeah.
- 28:57And. Then you got all hell break
- 28:59loose. Oh yeah, well, I had like for my
- 29:02kids 18th birthday because he was off playing hockey and he's
- 29:04in Ontario, which is the suck because his, you know, 18th
- 29:07birthday in Alberta is like that's the, that's the you're an
- 29:10adult, right. Oh yeah, in Ontario, it's 19.
- 29:13So he goes there to play hockey in his big dream, and it wasn't
- 29:15going the way he wanted it to go.
- 29:17And I'm driving home and I'm really tired.
- 29:20I'm like, you know, so he didn't do something really big for his
- 29:23birthday and like, I need AI need to sing in Midget.
- 29:26I need to sing in Midget, right? I'm like, OK, so then we go and
- 29:31like I need to figure out how to make his birthday as memorable
- 29:35as I can get. So now I've got like 5 friends
- 29:38on my phone going. I'm like, we need to find a
- 29:39stinging Midget. Just sing a telegram, go to the
- 29:41school because it's a hockey school, right?
- 29:42Nobody's going to expect that shit get we've got 5 people
- 29:47singing. Midgets are expensive.
- 29:48Stop. You're.
- 29:50Terrible. And then my kids, like you think
- 29:54singing ones are expensive. He goes, try the strippers.
- 29:57The Midget strippers are like $5000.
- 29:59I'm like, how do you know this? Well, let me tell you something,
- 30:03Mom. But apparently the dumb ideas
- 30:06are genetic. We did make his birthday
- 30:09memorable. We did not.
- 30:10We could, I could not afford a Midget.
- 30:12But yeah, you know, and maybe that's not politically correct,
- 30:14but I mean, they're, they're wonderful.
- 30:16And it's like, I just love every one of them.
- 30:18I don't even know them, but it's.
- 30:19Like, was that an overtired idea?
- 30:21Yeah. I love that.
- 30:22Oh my gosh. Right.
- 30:24I love it. I could do.
- 30:25Can you plan my next birthday? I could.
- 30:28I'm like shenanigator. That's the one that I I want to
- 30:32take top shenanigator. Yeah, I love because.
- 30:35Gosh, we love shenanigans. Oh yeah, life is ridiculous.
- 30:37You might as well roll with it, right man doesn't make people
- 30:41laugh and make people happy. And if it didn't work like I've
- 30:45come I've. Come out of the arena more times
- 30:47than not going I've won a lot right like in in the odds of you
- 30:53know how many times you run to how many times you win and stuff
- 30:55like that like it might I'm I'm good, not great, but I'm good
- 31:00and. Everybody sees what you win.
- 31:02That's why they tire you to do clinics or listen to what your
- 31:05story is and why you want to try the saddle and all that kind of
- 31:09stuff. But there's more times than not
- 31:10that you don't win. Then you you come out of the
- 31:13arena and you're like, that did. Not go as planned.
- 31:15Yeah, that plan did not work. Note to self don't do that again
- 31:20or why did I do that? Yeah.
- 31:23Yeah, it's super humbling. Like I feel like I'm humbled
- 31:26every time I get out of the saddle in some way, shape or
- 31:29form. So I start, just started barrel
- 31:32racing in May and then I've obviously there was like nothing
- 31:36in the summertime 'cause I didn't go anywhere.
- 31:39And I'm still like learning. Like we're all learning.
- 31:42Still learning and and I'm barrel racing on an ex rope
- 31:45horse. So she's learning, Yeah.
- 31:47And she, I mean, she's been doing pretty good, but like, I
- 31:49feel like every single time I'm like, gosh Dang it, like I feel
- 31:52like I'm doing really good, you know?
- 31:54Yeah. And I feel like I'm going
- 31:55really, really, really fast. Yeah.
- 31:57And then they tell me the time and I'm like, but then I'm like
- 32:00so hard on myself even though I've literally been doing this
- 32:03for like a couple months. We're our own worst critics.
- 32:06Always. Yeah, right.
- 32:07Always. So yeah, just find someone
- 32:09that's going to build you. Your team is supposed to be on
- 32:11your side. Yeah, right.
- 32:12They're supposed to see you win. And I always tell girls at
- 32:14clinics too, you know, we got three friends.
- 32:16Honestly you got 3 friends. You got your friends when you're
- 32:19on the losing side, you got your friends when you're on the
- 32:21winning side, and there's only probably 3 or 4 that match up on
- 32:25both ends, right? It's come and go.
- 32:27Just just be nice, just be kind. Don't be tearing people down or
- 32:32screaming at the gate guy or the rodeo committee or something
- 32:35like that. Just just go on and be nice,
- 32:37because at the end of the day, you're not going to call any of
- 32:39these people for coffee, right? I know if your mom dies, you're
- 32:41not going to call any of them anyways.
- 32:42Yeah. So take your three friends, go
- 32:44home and be happy. Yeah.
- 32:46Right. Less is more, less is more.
- 32:48Heck, it gets overwhelming in your time, like time, right.
- 32:53All summer long I was like, I could think of is I just want to
- 32:55go home and ride my horse. Yeah, that's gonna go home.
- 32:57Like I'm going to come to Arizona, just going to ride a
- 32:59horses over there just. Going to ride a one of them
- 33:02that's so exciting. I just, I just love your story
- 33:04and like how you're you're from Canada, you went to New Zealand,
- 33:08got in with Franco, and then now you're here.
- 33:11Yeah. And are you, you're you're not
- 33:13by yourself, right? No, my son.
- 33:15Come down with me, OK? All right, My, my world is just
- 33:21kind of like a fly by the seat of your pants at the moment.
- 33:24Live in a holiday trailer. It's kind of nice.
- 33:25It's like super festively. Yeah.
- 33:27You know, but the weather has been great aside from the
- 33:30floods. But that was pretty cool.
- 33:31I did. I did paddle board in the
- 33:33desert. That's all through the yard.
- 33:35Good for you. Till the neighbor dog, Pete, was
- 33:37dead and on the other side of the fence.
- 33:38And he's like, I don't think you should be floating past my
- 33:40fence. Yeah.
- 33:41OK, Pete, no, take it. Oh my gosh.
- 33:43Anybody. Record you doing that?
- 33:45We got some videos. Yeah, I know why people die in
- 33:48flash floods, because you noticed dumb Canadians you don't
- 33:50know, Like, OK, we're not dumb, but we're very inexperienced
- 33:53maybe. So we think of, you know, we get
- 33:56our view of the Americans and it's like they're all packing
- 33:58guns and there's snakes and spiders and.
- 34:01You know, yeah, I'm not allowed. To pack a gun because I'm not a
- 34:05citizen. So it's kind of like, well.
- 34:07Damn right. That's what you come down here
- 34:09for. But then you come, there's
- 34:11snakes, there's scorpions, that stuff can kill you.
- 34:14And then, you know, we don't kick stuff before we pick it up,
- 34:19which apparently you're supposed to do.
- 34:21Because that's when the bugs and stuff goes away.
- 34:23Oh, yeah, we've, I've been here my whole life and I learned a
- 34:25very hard lesson not doing that, not shaking out a shoe that we
- 34:28leave. I have like a little.
- 34:30Boot or whatever. Yeah.
- 34:32Up at the back door and I didn't do that and a a camel spider.
- 34:39What the hell is? That I mean, they're, they're
- 34:41awful. So they eat scorpions.
- 34:43They don't have venom or anything, but they have little
- 34:45pinchers and I stuck my foot in my little muck boot up there and
- 34:51I was like, ow. And I like, took it off and it's
- 34:54just hanging on my toe. Oh, I'd lose it.
- 34:57Oh, I did. I screamed and it comes running
- 35:00out. So yeah, I mean, we, I've been
- 35:01here my whole life and we still are not great at doing that.
- 35:03So. Yeah, well, we're really bad at
- 35:05it. Really bad.
- 35:07Like I would probably just burn, burn my hay pile if there was a
- 35:12snake in it. Like I just, I can't.
- 35:15I just. No.
- 35:16Yeah, we don't have that like we have.
- 35:19We have snakes in southern Alberta and I was at one place
- 35:22down by the river and there's rattlesnakes down there and I
- 35:24said if one comes in the barn, I'm just leaving my stuff and
- 35:26everything. I'm just leaving.
- 35:27Like I'm, I'm gone. I'm gone.
- 35:29Yeah. Then I go to Texas to learn some
- 35:32lameness stuff, and you know, there's stuff down there too.
- 35:35And I'm like this poor pony. The first day of the clinic, we
- 35:38walk in in the morning and there's a pony with blood coming
- 35:40out its eyes and its ears. And I'm like.
- 35:41What the what the hell? Oh no.
- 35:44So, yeah, and then I'm doing a doing the main event in Canada
- 35:48and I'm like side by side with the one of the instructors that
- 35:52came by. There's a dude from Texas and
- 35:54he's like looking out and it had snowed.
- 35:57And he's like, well, that wasn't in the brochure.
- 36:00I'm like, it's April. Like we, I mean, we could still
- 36:03be snowed in. Like, we could still have a snow
- 36:04day at school. And I'm like, but we don't have
- 36:07any of that other stuff that'll kill you.
- 36:08Like you get us dummies down here.
- 36:10And when we, you know, just go pick up firewood and he's like,
- 36:13oh, no, you kick it first. Yeah.
- 36:15Oh my gosh. Well, you guys got ice and snow
- 36:18up there like bad, right? Yeah.
- 36:21The week I got, the week I got home was really nice.
- 36:24We were kind of above, we were above freezing, so like and the
- 36:27horses were all like loving and study.
- 36:29Behavior. Melissa, that is not nice.
- 36:31No, that it was, it was nice. Like really it was for us.
- 36:35It was beautiful. I was dreading the going home.
- 36:37Like my son went home for Christmas and he's like, I just
- 36:41can't get warm because it was minus like ours your -40 and our
- 36:45-40 is the same. So because Fahrenheit to
- 36:49Celsius. Oh yeah.
- 36:50So his -40 and my -40 or like, yeah, so he was at -40.
- 36:56And he's like I just. Can't get warm.
- 36:58I'm like, now I know how my stepmom felt right when she come
- 37:01from California at Christmas time is like that.
- 37:03No, everyone wants to be together at Christmas time, but
- 37:05it's like, can't we just do that somewhere else?
- 37:08And then we all those Canadians want to know for Christmas and
- 37:11then it can't go away. Like I lived in Indiana for like
- 37:155 years and and I was born and raised here in Arizona.
- 37:19And I'm telling you, like that first winter, well, all the
- 37:22winners kick my ass. Like I was, I was in long Johns
- 37:25in like September, Yeah, all the way up until May.
- 37:29Yeah, yeah. No, I usually wear my ski pants
- 37:31from September till May. OK, well, that makes me feel a
- 37:34little bit better. But all the guys that I worked
- 37:36with, like they're just wearing jeans and a shirt and a jacket
- 37:40and I'm like, dude. And it's like, you know, 30°,
- 37:44probably 40 fifties, you know, and I'm, I'm cold.
- 37:50No, I get it. I hated it.
- 37:52I hate it too. My hands.
- 37:53And my hands don't hurt down here.
- 37:56My shoulders don't hurt down here.
- 37:57My first, my first week in Indiana, I was, I was going to
- 38:01school and I had my van up there and there was a ice storm that
- 38:09just passed, right. First time ever being in ice
- 38:14storm or whatever. And there's like a thick piece
- 38:16of ice on my windshield and I'm like, damn.
- 38:20So I go up to my room, I get a pot and I boil it.
- 38:23Oh, no, he wrecked your windshield.
- 38:25I thank God I didn't, but I just like threw it on there, you
- 38:29know, and I had my van started already.
- 38:31So like the, so like the heat was kind of warming up.
- 38:35The ice melts, you know, I let my instructors know, hey, I'm
- 38:38probably going to be a little bit late.
- 38:40You know, I show up all late and they're like, what's what's
- 38:42wrong? Because they all know that I'm
- 38:43from Arizona. What's wrong, Shane?
- 38:46And I told them they're like, dude, you did.
- 38:50Don't ever pour boiling water on ice on your windshield.
- 38:54I'm like, why? Like, 'cause it'll freaking
- 38:56break it. I'm like, ah, shit, I see.
- 38:57I didn't know that. Yeah.
- 38:59And I'm like, that's something you need to tell me day one.
- 39:01Yeah. Salt is your friend with ice.
- 39:04Yeah. Oh.
- 39:06Yeah, so see, I would be absolutely clueless 'cause I'm
- 39:09born and raised here too. And if we ever, if we ever
- 39:13moved, it would be because of Nate's job.
- 39:16And more than likely it would send us to like the Midwest.
- 39:19And that like shatters me internally because I know that
- 39:24I'm a struggle. Oh yeah.
- 39:26Oh yeah. You know what I mean?
- 39:27And I don't know anything about what you need to do when it's
- 39:30really cold. You know what I mean?
- 39:32I I just. Dress warm.
- 39:33Yeah, I don't. Have to get a whole new
- 39:35wardrobe. Yeah.
- 39:37Oh, yeah. That's like the worst part is
- 39:38like having to put on a bunch of clothes just to go outside and
- 39:41then come back in and then take it all off.
- 39:44It's like, gosh, yeah, I know. It's it's like routine.
- 39:47We just, we don't know any better.
- 39:49But I did kind of laugh because my dad is Canadian and he got,
- 39:52he come down to the States and he got his citizenship and stuff
- 39:55and he's like, I love those ice storms in Texas.
- 39:59He's Canadian, so he knows what they're all about.
- 40:02But. The other ones don't.
- 40:04And he's like, it is so entertaining that they get to
- 40:08watch the, you know, the classical music and the cars
- 40:10floating and the people falling and stuff.
- 40:13And then there was a girl from up north that had they run a
- 40:17ranch in Texas and in the winter, so they'd come down and
- 40:20bring a bunch of horses and run this ranch.
- 40:22And that's when they had all that snow.
- 40:25And she was like, instantly, like, they're pretty smart for
- 40:28being Canadian, like being up north and dealing with the cold
- 40:31all the time. It was like, tarp in the
- 40:32trailers, get some generators, got gash, like, get the cabs
- 40:35inside the trailer, get them dried.
- 40:36You know she had it all figured out.
- 40:39Nobody else. Nobody else did.
- 40:41It was just kind of trying to be resourceful where you don't have
- 40:44that stuff ready. Right.
- 40:46Right. Exactly.
- 40:47But yeah, we're used to the cold.
- 40:49We don't know how to deal with the heat.
- 40:51See, I could. I could do the heat.
- 40:53What's it like here in the summer?
- 40:54Because that's awful. I mean, the worst could get like
- 40:57120. Yeah.
- 40:58Like frying eggs on the sidewalk.
- 41:00People try yeah or they, there's there's been people that have
- 41:03put like cookie dough on cookie sheets and just put them on
- 41:06their dash. But like it's also, we always
- 41:08joke when you you need like oven mitts to like use your steering
- 41:12wheel because the steering wheel gets really hot or if you have
- 41:15leather seats. Oh yeah.
- 41:18And you're wearing shorts. Oh yeah.
- 41:19They. Get sticky.
- 41:20Yeah, well, they not only do they get sticky, but like.
- 41:22They burn. Yeah, I'm like getting second
- 41:25degree burns on the backs of my thighs.
- 41:26And then your skin sizzles to the seats.
- 41:28Yeah. Pretty much.
- 41:29And then, like trying to get up and out of this is first, she
- 41:33and you wouldn't get it 'cause you don't wear hoochie daddy
- 41:36shorts. You're right.
- 41:36Yeah. So like with girls, like if
- 41:39you're wearing shorts or whatever, even if you're sitting
- 41:42in one of those like vinyl boots or something, like your legs
- 41:45start to stick and when you get up, it's like, I'm pretty sure a
- 41:48layer of skin just peeled off and I'm leaving it behind.
- 41:52I did that on a saddle once thinking it's hot.
- 41:54I'm just going to ride in shorts.
- 41:56And then the mayor reared and I went to get off and I left half
- 41:59my ass in the cell. Oh yeah.
- 42:00I was like, oh that hurt for days in the shower.
- 42:03Oh, I bet. Oh my gosh.
- 42:05But yeah, that heat leather no, and they find it funny too,
- 42:08because like our options on our vehicles are so different than
- 42:12your options on your vehicles down here like not not
- 42:14different, but what we need like we need 4 by 4 yeah, we
- 42:18definitely need 4 by 4. You guys don't down here, no.
- 42:21Not really, no. Unless you're actually, like,
- 42:24going, like going off the road, but for the most part and like,
- 42:28heated seats and heated steering wheels are pretty important for
- 42:31us. Yeah.
- 42:31Like it is for me. That's what sold me my first one
- 42:33time. Yeah, Was the heated steering
- 42:35wheel. Yeah.
- 42:36My truck's got a heated steering wheel and heated seats, and I
- 42:38really love it. Yeah, I really love it.
- 42:40Right? Yeah.
- 42:41I tickled it yesterday and it was 60°.
- 42:45I had the heated. Steering wheel on it and my
- 42:48heated seat, but that was just because I use that more so for
- 42:50my lower back relief, yeah. So you're not, you're like, not
- 42:54even cold. No, I'm cold right now.
- 42:56Oh, OK. Yeah, the guy I climatize quite
- 42:58well to Arizona I. Was going to ask because yeah,
- 43:01because I'm sitting here and I'm like every once in a while I
- 43:03start shivering inside. Yeah, yeah.
- 43:06No, my hands are cold. Definitely have.
- 43:08A hand warmer. Do you want it?
- 43:09No. I'm going to suck it up because
- 43:12it could be so much worse your. Hands are going to turn black.
- 43:14Could be so white because that's what they do.
- 43:17Like when your hands start sweating?
- 43:19My hands. My hands aren't sweating.
- 43:21Yeah. So how long have you just did
- 43:24you grow up with horses? And that was my, that was my, my
- 43:29mom got me a pony. OK, OK.
- 43:32And some just never outgrow it. And I just never outgrow it.
- 43:36Like then when I had kids and I dropped them off and I'd be
- 43:38going somewhere with the horses and she's like, could you come
- 43:40down and down without the horses?
- 43:41And I'm like, no, no, I can't. So home is where the horses are.
- 43:47So I'm in Canada and they're like, oh, you're home.
- 43:49And I'm like, well, no homes down there now.
- 43:52Yeah. Like that's where they live.
- 43:53That. So this is like, this is like in
- 43:56your blood. I I might be genetically
- 43:59deformed, but yeah, horses are in like.
- 44:02Horses are in my blood. Yeah, like I, I don't, I don't
- 44:05recall except for a brief stint for probably a month in my life
- 44:10where I've never had a horse with me.
- 44:12Like, damn. Oh, wow.
- 44:14Yeah. I'm like, I just can't.
- 44:15Like I, I always dream of that holiday.
- 44:18Like somebody just wake me up and there's a beach and you can
- 44:20hear it and, and there's not a horse to be seen, right?
- 44:23Because I'm, you know, chasing horses all day.
- 44:26I'm under them or I'm on them or I'm hauling them or I'm breeding
- 44:28them or I'm doing something and it and then I get to that beach.
- 44:33I'm. Like, I wonder what my horse is
- 44:35doing. Yeah.
- 44:37Oh, I wonder what race is coming up.
- 44:39Like, can I be ready for that one?
- 44:40Can I be ready for that one? Yeah, No, I'm now did you were
- 44:44you on a ranch or anything or No, I was just on a little when
- 44:48my mom had a quarter section and raised on that and you know, had
- 44:52the dairy cow and the horses and the pony and, you know, scruffy
- 44:57little bow dunk kids that that's that's what that was our toy
- 45:01like that was our wheels. You know, you want to go to your
- 45:03friend's house, you jump on your horse and off you go.
- 45:06And then, yeah, I never got to be like, I never got to rodeo or
- 45:09anything like that growing up because I couldn't afford it.
- 45:11But. And then my mentor being Sharon
- 45:15Camarillo, and she was always like, you make that run count to
- 45:18get to the next run and, you know, make that horse count.
- 45:21Be a nice horse, go to the next one, right?
- 45:23Like, you're forever building up.
- 45:26So. And I just kept adding to my
- 45:28repertoire. Like, you know, I coach figure
- 45:30skating because, you know, in Canada, you're either at the
- 45:32rink or on a horse. Like, that's just how I grew up.
- 45:36We had horse season and hockey season, like, and yeah, then I
- 45:40just was like, I loved horses so much.
- 45:42And I was like, you know, how hard can Ferrier be like?

- 47:39That's CALLF cs.com. And don't forget to mention Rad
- 47:44Cast for a special offer and. I always joke it's like.
- 47:49Have you ever met a really brilliant farrier?
- 47:51Nope, but we're not meant to be right?
- 47:54It's leather, Rinse, repeat, count to 4, go on to the next
- 47:57one and leather. Rinse, repeat.
- 47:58And every horse is different, but the anatomy doesn't change.
- 48:03They don't need a 2.0 upgrade. They don't need any of that
- 48:06stuff. Same as the barrel pattern.
- 48:07It's one to the right and two left and you go really fast.
- 48:09Like, you know, And how do you make it faster?
- 48:13How do you make their feet more the most efficient to the ground
- 48:15that you can possibly make? How do you make that horses
- 48:18stride as big as you can possibly make?
- 48:20How do you make it so that we don't fall off at 90 miles an
- 48:22hour? Like, you know, it just keep
- 48:24adding and building and and like between feet and saddles and all
- 48:30of that. It just kind of like grew into
- 48:32what movement Plus really is, which is ideally getting people
- 48:36to a enjoy the sport of barrel racing, being comfortable being
- 48:39with your girls and getting faster and faster, right.
- 48:43How do you how do you feel more secure when you start aging too?
- 48:47Like we've got a lot of ladies that when I brought the saddle
- 48:51to Canada, I was like, here's a good friend.
- 48:53She's kind of like her second mom.
- 48:55I'm like, she'll give me an honest opinion, love it or hate
- 48:57it, but she's not going to go out and trash it, right?
- 49:00So she loved it. She's like, I've never felt more
- 49:03secure, like more balanced sitting on her horse because I'd
- 49:06see her lean and I'd see her forward again and tested in the
- 49:08back of my mind where I'm like seeing forward riders.
- 49:10Does this work on everybody? And it worked on her too.
- 49:14So got her centered. She doesn't.
- 49:16Her horse would fall down in the arena.
- 49:18Her, you know, it's like, how do I make her safe to enjoy it so
- 49:21we don't lose? Because she's she's a great
- 49:24lady. She laughs.
- 49:25You can hear her laughing across the parking lot.
- 49:28You know one of those ones, you don't want them to leave the
- 49:30sport because they feel unsafe or they don't feel secure,
- 49:34right? This settles helped, right?
- 49:37Just making them feel that center where you've got a seat
- 49:39belt. But the design into the patent
- 49:41of this like with the your women's pelvis, the angle of
- 49:44your femur, the forces that are generated between the tree and
- 49:47your horse and putting them all together just changes the ride.
- 49:52So how do I get a little girl to be more confident, right?
- 49:57Get her sitting up straight so she doesn't feel like she's
- 49:59pulling forward learning more about saddles that you know, I,
- 50:04I didn't know about C pockets like the Hell's AC pocket.
- 50:08Well, that goes by the junk in your trunk, right?
- 50:11So everybody's built differently.
- 50:14So when girls are like, I'm in a size 14 and it's like, that's
- 50:17like jamming A7 into a size 3 jeans, right?
- 50:20Like get rid of the numbers, get rid of the go back to feel.
- 50:25But that seat pocket, if you're not hitting that seat pocket,
- 50:28you're not going to feel that stability coming, sitting down
- 50:31on your pockets coming into turn.
- 50:33You're going to be pulled forward.
- 50:35OK, because I was just about to ask.
- 50:36So when they say like sit on your pockets, is that?
- 50:38A sit in that pocket of your seat, like sit on the pockets of
- 50:41your jeans because that's where like our brains can get there
- 50:44and you know, you have three kind of positions on your
- 50:47pelvis. So when you're like up and go or
- 50:49sit neutral or sit down to stop or sit down to turn, but.
- 50:53The saddle's supposed to help that.
- 50:55Yeah, you know, it's supposed to be a tool to help get that gap
- 51:00between human and horse to come together as one.
- 51:05And everybody's different. Every horse is different.
- 51:07Every every rider has different goals.
- 51:10But. At the end of the day, comfort
- 51:13for humans and horses has to be 1, right?
- 51:17Yeah, you got an I'll fitting saddle, you are.
- 51:20Going to have. Issues in your horse, in the
- 51:23travelling, you're going to have them on one end or the other.
- 51:26Their quadrupeds are supposed to be on all four moving cleanly.
- 51:30And you know, we see muscle atrophy where they're like, they
- 51:33get these big hollows behind their shoulder blades because
- 51:37your saddle's not fitting. Why isn't your saddle fitting?
- 51:39Is a gullet too wide? Is a gullet too?
- 51:41Are the bars not right? Like, so then you take saddle
- 51:44fit, and you got all of these, you know, secrets.
- 51:47Yeah. And I can understand why saddle
- 51:49companies do that. Like, we got an SRB 3, and then,
- 51:51you know, we got AW4 and we got, like, all the different numbers
- 51:54that people tag saddles on because you see one thing on
- 51:58social media and you get a number in your head and like, I
- 52:00need a 42° bar. Sweet.
- 52:04Cool. Who measured it?
- 52:06We're looking at a triangle. There's three corners on that
- 52:09triangle. Which angle did they measure to
- 52:11get 42? Because we don't know.
- 52:13Yeah. You know, And, you know, we.
- 52:15I watch a lot of that Wendy who is from Burns or isn't from
- 52:19Burns anymore, I don't know. But Wendy has like, so much good
- 52:22information. And she's like that older gal.
- 52:25Yeah, yeah, yeah. She's excellent.
- 52:27And she's like, she's educating people and it's beautiful.
- 52:30And Nancy's from Brazil learning English in learning English in
- 52:35New Zealand. And I don't know if you've ever
- 52:37gone to New Zealand, but I look at them and go, what'd you just
- 52:40say? Like, your English and my
- 52:42English do not match. Right.
- 52:44OK. So then Nancy's learning that on
- 52:46top of her Portuguese. And I'm like, sometimes the, the
- 52:50language barrier gets tough. If she can't explain something.
- 52:53We'll go back to Wendy and Wendy'll get like, she'll pick
- 52:56out a video of what she's trying to explain.
- 52:58And one of the, one of the videos that I'd watched was
- 53:02like, everybody wants an angle for their horse.
- 53:05This is what I've been told this what I've been taught, this is
- 53:07what fit. But there's so many angles that
- 53:09run through a saddle. It's like, well, which one,
- 53:12right. And again, where, which triangle
- 53:15are they measuring from? So when you say triangle, like,
- 53:18is it like the front part of the Yeah, like the, the slope of the
- 53:22saddle, like the, you know, 'cause you got, our horses have
- 53:25changed so much in the last 20 years.
- 53:27The saddles haven't changed a whole bunch, you know, but yeah,
- 53:31the angles. So we try to keep it simple.
- 53:33Like do you have a thoroughbred? Do you have a semi quarter
- 53:35horse? Do you have a quarter horse?
- 53:36Or do you have a really big quarter horse, right?
- 53:38Or do you have a crossbred, right?
- 53:40There's draft crosses, there's gypsy crosses, there's, you
- 53:43know, there's all kinds of different crosses that people
- 53:46can build and then they struggle the same way with the saddle
- 53:48fit. So therefore when we custom,
- 53:50we're hand making them anyways, so we can go out and actually
- 53:52take those measurements, take the top line, rebuild their back
- 53:55in the factory, build that tree around that horse.
- 53:58Full wet back is what you want. I've got a roping ambassador in
- 54:03Canada and he's feral. I love this kid.
- 54:05He is absolutely feral. I bought a horse off and he had
- 54:08saddle sores everywhere. Stint rot like he doesn't He
- 54:11thought that was normal, right? Because you know, he, he was
- 54:15raised and he just didn't just didn't know.
- 54:18And he's like, I broke 4 trees off my big buckskin, 4 saddles
- 54:22off my buckskin last year and I'm like, what are you doing?
- 54:27So I'm like, well, we're going to test it.
- 54:31So I threw a rope saddle at him and he's like, my horse never
- 54:34works so good. And I'm like, what's the
- 54:35difference? When it fits right, that horse
- 54:37will push back into that saddle, push those shoulders up into
- 54:39that saddle. So you put a already made Franco
- 54:42saddle on his horse, on his horse, on his horse, because
- 54:45we're not going to get that specific kid rides too many
- 54:47horses, right? So we just kind of give him a
- 54:49generic tree that was like not a generic tree, but just a kind of
- 54:52our standard quarter horse tree because I looked at his horses.
- 54:54They're kind of standard quarter horses, big and beefy.
- 54:58And he's going to test it. I'm like, OK, fingers crossed.
- 55:04OK. Everyday I'm like, is that phone
- 55:06going to ring and say, because we have warranty on our tree,
- 55:08right? Five years on the tree, same as
- 55:10you know, lots of other saddle companies will warranty that.
- 55:14Then this summer I get, I asked him probably in the spring.
- 55:18I said, you know, what have you pulled with that saddle so far?
- 55:22And he's like, well, I got my truck stuck.
- 55:25So he unloaded his horse and pulled his truck out of the the
- 55:29mud. Like, I don't think we're
- 55:31designed to pull trucks, but OK. And then I get a video from a
- 55:35lady. Hold on time out.
- 55:37He pulled his truck with his horse off his saddle, off of his
- 55:42saddle. Oh, what?
- 55:44Yeah, OK. So you know, deli up and give
- 55:48her guns like his horse is his horse is something else.
- 55:51Like I'm talking like he said, wish me luck when he sent me a
- 55:56picture of this buckskin horse. He goes, this is where I break
- 55:58saddles and you know, maybe he doesn't pull a slack, maybe he
- 56:02doesn't. I don't, I don't know, I don't
- 56:04care. All I know is he's feral.
- 56:07He's awesome. He's broke 4 saddles and so far
- 56:12I am still standing and he'd pick up rides and there was a.
- 56:15Bull with his. Feet in the dirt like a donkey.
- 56:18And he sends me the video of him like got the rope on, hits the
- 56:22end of that slack, jerks that bull up off his feet and then
- 56:25Lopes off with him. He's like, I did feel my saddle
- 56:28flex in that one. He says, I thought it was a
- 56:30goner. But the next day I get a video
- 56:33from another lady that like, there goes your saddle.
- 56:36And it was a ranch rodeo for a memorial and the ranch rodeo.
- 56:39They have a truck and trailer in the arena.
- 56:42And I mean, granted, it was only a half ton truck and A2 horse
- 56:45trailer, so it's not a great big one, but they it was too muddy
- 56:51and they couldn't get the truck to go into the arena.
- 56:54So here's my saddle dallied on and they're pulling a truck and
- 56:59trailer. There's three horses, but
- 57:00they're pulling this truck and trailer into the arena.
- 57:03And. They're like, there goes your
- 57:04saddle again. And I'm like, OK, this is not
- 57:07what I want to promote, right? But we're definitely strong
- 57:11enough to last that kid. And if anybody can out pull that
- 57:14kid on his horse, good luck. Yeah, like, I don't want to
- 57:17challenge that, but I'm so cool. I'm pretty confident in our rope
- 57:21saddles and you know the quality that we're setting out there and
- 57:26we're trying not to be like out of market.
- 57:28We want everybody to be able to afford them too.
- 57:31So can. We grab.
- 57:33Oh. They're napping.
- 57:35It's OK. But can we grab maybe my sorrel,
- 57:38she's the thickest quarter horse out of the out of the two and we
- 57:42could try like just explain like what we're looking for when
- 57:45we're fitting a. Saddle.
- 57:47Absolutely. Heck yeah.
- 57:48We can absolutely do that. And I think if we can just
- 57:52simplify it and get people to not be overwhelmed, right?
- 57:56Go on social media and they're like, oh, you need this song or
- 57:58this song. Because it's super even that.
- 58:00What's her name? Wendy.
- 58:02I feel like she can get super overwhelming because I'll watch
- 58:05some of her videos and I'm like. But there's so much really to
- 58:08understand, like do you understand the anatomy of the
- 58:11horse And you understand this part, this part, this part?
- 58:13Like there's we have like I just call some no go zones, right?
- 58:19Cartilage on the top of the shoulder blades, it can turn
- 58:21into like cauliflower ears. You know, when you see UFUFC
- 58:24fighters, that cartilage does that same thing on the top of
- 58:27the shoulder blade. So if you've got a gullet that's
- 58:29sitting on that, then all of a sudden it gets bigger and bigger
- 58:32and the saddle gets tighter and tighter and the horse gets up
- 58:34more upset or more sore. And then you start looking at
- 58:38other issues that start to crop up, like, you know, the horses
- 58:42dropping on the front end, putting a little more weight
- 58:43there. People go to the vet thinking
- 58:45it's a hawk. They won't get to their hips and
- 58:47you know, it's not the Hawks, it's the front end.
- 58:49You know, it's so it goes back and forth constantly.
- 58:52We can just go like this is an ogo zone.
- 58:54This is where you're having issues and I mean try
- 58:58everything. I'll help you fit your saddle.
- 58:59I'll help you fit anybody else's saddle.
- 59:02I've lots of times we've done a saddle nights and I mean your
- 59:05saddle fits really good. The only thing I can't see when
- 59:08I strap that saddle down is the Withers, right?
- 59:1220 years ago, our horses don't look the same, right?
- 59:16So we get a lot of thoroughbred influence in our horses, and our
- 59:18length of our wither is getting longer and longer across that
- 59:21horse's back. But the seat of your saddle
- 59:23doesn't come back any later, right?
- 59:26So how do we accommodate that horse's anatomy to the saddle
- 59:31fit? And you know, we look at the
- 59:33difference between men's and women's trees, right?
- 59:35Like we want to sit on this part of our pelvis because that's our
- 59:40natural. Men sit up a little bit more.
- 59:43You know, then I think we kind of make it like overwhelming.
- 59:47I mean, like, oh gosh, now I now I got a saddle that I can only
- 59:49sell to a woman. Well, possibly.
- 59:52But it's comfort for you and your horse at the time it's
- 59:56answering that problem. And, you know, saddle fit is
- 1:00:00kind of everything to keep your horse going for years and years
- 1:00:02and years. Yeah, you know, it, it just, it
- 1:00:05does get overwhelming, but. Find your team, find people that
- 1:00:09you can trust. I know we get sold all the time
- 1:00:11in the horse world, but trust your gut in that fact that it's
- 1:00:16a yes or a no. Yeah.
- 1:00:18If it doesn't feel 100% better than what you already have, keep
- 1:00:22going. Yeah, keep going because there's
- 1:00:25going to be. The answer is going to be out
- 1:00:26there. You just got to find it and quit
- 1:00:29being influenced. So many horse people lose their
- 1:00:32confidence. It's easy to do.
- 1:00:34It is super easy to do because I know for me, like I feel like I
- 1:00:38feel really, really good one week and then the next week I'll
- 1:00:40be like. So do I.
- 1:00:42Well, this'll I mean. WTF man?
- 1:00:44Yeah. It'll definitely humble you.
- 1:00:45Oh yeah, I'm telling you, I swear, every time I get out of
- 1:00:49the saddle I feel like I'm humbled in some way, shape or
- 1:00:51form. Well, and it doesn't it doesn't
- 1:00:53matter who you are because I mean I was it was over in a Gila
- 1:00:56when I first started down here and I'm trotting up and down the
- 1:00:59road and you see Coats Arena. But I don't think it's like I
- 1:01:02don't think of it as the Larry codes, right.
- 1:01:05Wonderful gentleman. Same thing.
- 1:01:08Like there's room for all of us, right.
- 1:01:10But I'm like, Oh my God. So now I'm just like a little a
- 1:01:14little bug in in the big pond. And here's the saddle maker,
- 1:01:18right? Years of experience and here's
- 1:01:20me that's Canadian, still not aware of rattlesnakes and stuff
- 1:01:25like that, right. And then behind him lives Sue
- 1:01:29Smith. I'm like, Oh, my God, like I'm,
- 1:01:33I want to be her when I grow up too, right?
- 1:01:35Like I, I, your idols are standing down here, being from
- 1:01:39up there. And then, you know, you're
- 1:01:41jumping into the pond. And then I go to the barrel race
- 1:01:43and she's in her too. And I'm like, I'm humbled.
- 1:01:46But I'm like, I'm actually not too bad at what I do.
- 1:01:51But at the same time, it's like, there's the big duck.
- 1:01:53Yeah. And then you're like, I've got,
- 1:01:55am I good enough? And then you kind of get that
- 1:01:56nerve. And then you just got to settle
- 1:01:58back down and go, no, I know what I'm doing.
- 1:01:59I didn't get here, didn't get here by accident, Right.
- 1:02:03You know, this, this didn't catch my attention by accident.
- 1:02:07It's something that you keep, keep going forward, keep going
- 1:02:12forward. And then you, you know, you let
- 1:02:14your brain stop you from moving to the next step because you're
- 1:02:19intimidated or you're humbled or.
- 1:02:20Yeah. I mean, we're humbled every day.
- 1:02:22Yeah. I mean.
- 1:02:23It doesn't matter what it is. Doesn't matter.
- 1:02:25We just kind of put more like, I don't know, more ranking on the
- 1:02:30the horse industry, like, oh, I'm not as good as that guy.
- 1:02:32Yeah. Well, maybe, but maybe you're a
- 1:02:35better person. We don't know, right?
- 1:02:38Or maybe your kids are better behaved or, you know, we all
- 1:02:40have something different. I always try to look at people
- 1:02:44that, you know, are low, that we, that I categorize like
- 1:02:48higher than me or whatever. Just I always, I always just try
- 1:02:52to like look at them like they're just human.
- 1:02:54They are, you know, they, they bleed like I bleed.
- 1:02:56They, you know, they're, you know what, it's funny, They do
- 1:02:58the same stuff I do. So roping saddles, OK, I'm
- 1:03:05pretty confident, right? Dun Dun Dun at the NFR, Like I'm
- 1:03:09going to be like team ropers are all doing a signing in the same
- 1:03:11building that we're in. I'm going to go, OK, we have a
- 1:03:17saddle Rep in Canada, David Schmidt, Colton Schmidt's uncle.
- 1:03:21Colton is like running for the world.
- 1:03:22I'm watching the team rope and I'm like, come on, come on, come
- 1:03:24on. All right, Like, broke my heart
- 1:03:26in the final round for him, right?
- 1:03:29What a classy kid. Like, just luck of the jar or
- 1:03:33something happened. I don't know.
- 1:03:34I'm not a team Roper, so I can't even analyze his run.
- 1:03:36But he was like there to win the world's anyways.
- 1:03:39They're having a signing and I'm going through and there's like
- 1:03:41all these. I'm like, give me the name of
- 1:03:44the number one kid, you know, that's going to cause you grief
- 1:03:46in the future. Colton was that.
- 1:03:49Colton was the only team Roper of that group of 30 that had a
- 1:03:53name right off the top of his head.
- 1:03:55And I said, Colton, your grandfather taught me how to
- 1:03:57rope. And I mean, granted, I was
- 1:03:59young. I was only like 19 or whatever.
- 1:04:01And, you know, you put a beer can on top of the dummy in your
- 1:04:04rope and you snap the beer can off and you can go for a $5,
- 1:04:06like, jackpot kind of thing at the end of the night.
- 1:04:08And I'm like, yeah, I'm rocking this right.
- 1:04:12But Colton's grandfather taught me how to rope.
- 1:04:15The Schmidt family name at home is like a very solid family
- 1:04:19name. They've helped so many people.
- 1:04:20They've done such good for the roping community, the rodeo
- 1:04:23community. And then here's the kid that, I
- 1:04:26mean, he, when I was learning to rope, he wasn't even born yet,
- 1:04:29right? His parents, well, maybe he was
- 1:04:30born, but I mean, those kids all were born with a rope in their
- 1:04:34hand. So it's only natural to watch
- 1:04:36him. I mean, he doesn't know me from
- 1:04:37Adam, but I really want to I, I was like, why am I not your
- 1:04:41sponsor? So it's still, I haven't reached
- 1:04:44back out to him. You know, great ideas.
- 1:04:47I we're just a small company. I can't offer like thousands and
- 1:04:50thousands of dollars in sponsorship, but I can order, I
- 1:04:52can, I can organize deals and long term stuff.
- 1:04:54But, you know, I'm confident that we will be there.
- 1:04:58You know. And I, I think we have a decent
- 1:05:01product. Like I said, it's not when we're
- 1:05:03not no $10,000 saddle by any means.
- 1:05:06We're not going to try and break the bank, but we're going to try
- 1:05:09and make people comfortable and make them, you know, go damn, I
- 1:05:12want this to be your favorite saddle in the trailer.
- 1:05:14Like I want this to be your go to saddle, right?
- 1:05:17You know, and I've got a lot of girls in Canada that are like,
- 1:05:19oh, I just love myself. I can't, you know, one girl
- 1:05:22calls it her ass grabber because she doesn't ride like it keeps
- 1:05:26you centered, right? I had a horse that bucked on the
- 1:05:29way home from third barrel. She was dirty.
- 1:05:30She has counterfeit and I'd rode her for like 8 months, never
- 1:05:34once bucked. I always kind of laughed because
- 1:05:35it's like, well, she doesn't buck when you get in the South.
- 1:05:37She's good right until the $20,000 race and then she does.
- 1:05:41And I don't, I don't ride a bucking horse.
- 1:05:43I bail like a little bitch like I am out.
- 1:05:46I find a soft place to land. It's just that when she was
- 1:05:49coming home, it was between the 1st and 2nd barrel and then the
- 1:05:52timer line and then that alley. By the the time I realized what
- 1:05:55was going on, we're in the alley and I'm going to rack my head
- 1:05:57off the pipe. So I'm just doing everything I
- 1:05:59can and I'm cussing her and whatever.
- 1:06:01You're not supposed to swear in the arena, but under the
- 1:06:03circumstances, I think it was justified.
- 1:06:05My hat's over my face. I can't.
- 1:06:07I'm like, I'm like, oh, and I do not ride a buck in horse.
- 1:06:11And like, my knees are kind of shaking and I get her stopped
- 1:06:13and I'm like, oh, and she's an outside horse and I'm like, I'll
- 1:06:15be the last ride. I ride on you, you bitch.
- 1:06:18I get off, I pick up my hat and I walk out of the arena.
- 1:06:21The only reason I stayed on that horse was because of the saddle
- 1:06:23because it kept me in the middle and I didn't.
- 1:06:26Feel like I got bopped to one side or pulled forward or
- 1:06:28anything like that. So there's the girl that calls
- 1:06:30it the ass grabbers. She goes out, we're at an event,
- 1:06:33she goes out and tries to saddle and she goes, you know what I
- 1:06:35learned? My horse can long trot.
- 1:06:38I'm like, no shit, they all can if they're not bothered, right?
- 1:06:42So she's like, OK, And she's just I've been trying to get her
- 1:06:44to be a Rep for a long time because she just loves her
- 1:06:46saddle so much. She's like, Oh, I wouldn't do
- 1:06:48you any justice. I'm like, we don't need you to
- 1:06:49do justice. We need you to to be able to
- 1:06:51educate people. We don't need you to be out
- 1:06:53there winning up. You know, don't go winning,
- 1:06:56right? You don't need to be winning,
- 1:06:58right. If you're winning and you're and
- 1:06:59you're an influencer, you're be able to communicate with people.
- 1:07:02Great. But anyway, she she gets home
- 1:07:04and she goes, I don't ride young horses because I don't I don't
- 1:07:06ride the book, right. She goes the new ass grabber.
- 1:07:11Done it twice now. Wow.
- 1:07:13Look at you go. That's awesome.
- 1:07:14So. I just kind of laugh at her and
- 1:07:16I'm like, how's your ass, grabber?
- 1:07:16And she's like, good. I'm like, do you need another
- 1:07:18one yet? Like you're going to be a Rep
- 1:07:19yet? Yeah, the finals.
- 1:07:21Just name it that. Yeah, I would like have a
- 1:07:23special saddle that's named the Ass Grabber.
- 1:07:25I would love to, but you know, then also then it gets to
- 1:07:28professionalism, you know, all that stuff.
- 1:07:30And I'm like, so because this is where we're at and it can be
- 1:07:35very candid. So me and the Kiwi kid, we're
- 1:07:37always out there like joking and laughing and we're delirious.
- 1:07:40Most of the time we're overtired.
- 1:07:42That's why everything is funny. But we're like, fuck yeah,
- 1:07:44Franco, fuck yeah, Franco. And I'm like, I don't think
- 1:07:46Nancy would like that if we decided to hashtag that.
- 1:07:49So. And in barrel racing, it's like
- 1:07:52if you're not scared, go faster, right?
- 1:07:54Like that's where you should be all the time.
- 1:07:56Go If you're not scared, going. I love, I love the alleyway
- 1:07:59because that's where nothing's gone wrong yet, right?
- 1:08:01You just run down the alleyway. That's like the most freeing
- 1:08:04moment of the entire barrel Run is like running to 1st.
- 1:08:07And I want to be the fastest 1 to the first barrel.
- 1:08:10And it's like full scent. Yeah.
- 1:08:12So then it ended up being full scent Franco and it was like,
- 1:08:16you can I like full send it just full send.
- 1:08:18And then my breakaway Roper, same thing, full send it like
- 1:08:21part of the full send Franco team.
- 1:08:23And then it gets on the truck and then it's like, OK, like we
- 1:08:25just need it to catch on. And then you can watch all these
- 1:08:28girls that are riding and they hashtag us.
- 1:08:30I can see how many are actually out there.
- 1:08:31And it's quite rewarding to see what we built from the time it
- 1:08:35landed in North America to now, right?
- 1:08:37You know, we start small in Canada.
- 1:08:40You know, we got to get our shit together before we get to the
- 1:08:43States. This is the kahuna of the horse
- 1:08:45industry, right? We don't want to come down here
- 1:08:48looking like a fool. And I mean, you're still going
- 1:08:51to be under that eye yet. We just need people to get a
- 1:08:54chance, right? So when you go sit, when I'm
- 1:08:57telling you sit, sit, sit in it. And then talk to me about it
- 1:09:01because I can preach you anything you want about a
- 1:09:04saddle, right until you sit in it.
- 1:09:07You're not going to know what I'm feeling, what I'm talking,
- 1:09:10any of that. Just get in it, go for a ride in
- 1:09:13it. And I think maybe we're the one
- 1:09:15of the only companies. I don't know, I haven't really
- 1:09:17like compared to see like what all the other saddle companies
- 1:09:21are doing. But I'm like, come try the
- 1:09:23saddle. I don't know how to wrap a horn
- 1:09:26because I'm not a Roper, but I'll take the saddles out and
- 1:09:30all the breakaway ropers can make runs in them too.
- 1:09:32Go try it before you ever need to purchase one, right?
- 1:09:37Try one And we're willing to do that.
- 1:09:39I have a stack of demo saddles for barrel saddles.
- 1:09:41That's awesome. I have 5 different.
- 1:09:44I only have 4 now, 3 breakaway saddles.
- 1:09:47You know, like I can sell off some of my demos, but I'd like
- 1:09:51to keep enough so that I can still get people in the saddle
- 1:09:54and be like, this might not fit your horse, but at least get the
- 1:09:56feel of it 'cause like where that saddle puts you, does it
- 1:10:00get you up and out where you need to be?
- 1:10:02Does it get you down and down and into your pockets?
- 1:10:04Like what do you need? And the forces that go like
- 1:10:08roping is different forces on the, on the, our bodies and the
- 1:10:11horses bodies compared to barrel racing.
- 1:10:14And it's all been put together so that if you're going sideways
- 1:10:18off a head horse or stopping on a heel horse, that saddle puts
- 1:10:21you where you're supposed to be. Yeah.
- 1:10:24Especially if it fits you and your horse together.
- 1:10:27So we're not trying to be, I'm not trying to do anything but 1%
- 1:10:31of the sales in this country. 1%.
- 1:10:34I mean, it should be realistic. It should be.
- 1:10:37I mean, when there's 9000 teams show up at the, at the roping,
- 1:10:421% is lots. I don't need to, I don't need.
- 1:10:45I just want, and I want to share it with everybody.
- 1:10:47Like I want to share it with my reps I want, you know, the
- 1:10:50reward maybe financially or product wise or whatever, you
- 1:10:55know, lots of incentives for our reps Lots of, you know, I want
- 1:11:01to cover every part of this province.
- 1:11:03I want to get every grill racer from the like I can go down to a
- 1:11:0612 inch saddle. So 12 inch to, you know, the
- 1:11:09senior, we haven't made a mule saddle yet.
- 1:11:11I'd love to try. Oh, that.
- 1:11:12'D be cool. That would be cool.
- 1:11:14You know, but all your crossbreds and stuff, we can do
- 1:11:16that, you know, weird fit and horsey just can't seem to get
- 1:11:19comfortable. Give us a try, right, We'll do
- 1:11:22it. But our reps, I'll share
- 1:11:24everything. I'll share it all.
- 1:11:26I don't care. Yeah.
- 1:11:27Everybody wins. And then our ambassadors, like I
- 1:11:30need ambassadors. I need, I need a kid that's out
- 1:11:33there. And I always say kid, 'cause I'm
- 1:11:34like, I'm always the underdog. Give me the underdog.
- 1:11:36Give me the one that like nobody suspects.
- 1:11:39And I want to get in there and have that relationship with them
- 1:11:43and then build up and when they get to the NFR we can say.
- 1:11:46Like, yeah, I'll be there with. You right, that's really cool
- 1:11:49We'll we'll do that. I love I love hearing you talk
- 1:11:52about it 'cause I like I could I could like feel your passion.
- 1:11:55I could like hear it, you know, and you're not just selling a
- 1:11:59product like you, like you believe in it.
- 1:12:00Like I believe in it. You're like all in I, so I'm
- 1:12:03like I said, a movement girl, right?
- 1:12:05So I'm, I'm all trying to prove this patent.
- 1:12:08Like I want to be like, it moves the shoulders.
- 1:12:10When you free the shoulders of that horse, the stride
- 1:12:13increases. If I get, if I get 6 inches
- 1:12:15longer stride, that's cool, right?
- 1:12:18That's freeing up that horse's movement.
- 1:12:20The feet are good, the teeth are good, the saddle's good.
- 1:12:22You know, everybody knows what they're doing.
- 1:12:25And you can change a horse's stride.
- 1:12:26Like from the first year that I rode this little Gray mirror
- 1:12:28that I'm running. I measured her stride in the
- 1:12:31alleyway coming down the alley. That's my fastest point, right?
- 1:12:35I mean, we could probably catch a stride coming home 'cause
- 1:12:37she's pretty wide open there too, but she would squirt out
- 1:12:39from her saddle literally 'cause she's kind of like trying to
- 1:12:41call her a pig. Like her biggest, like where you
- 1:12:45put, where you put your cinch, That's the the biggest part of
- 1:12:48her body. So when she like, pushes off it,
- 1:12:50it goes so hard that the saddle slips back an inch and then it
- 1:12:54just gets narrower and narrower. So by the time I get to the
- 1:12:56third barrel, I feel like I got Tourettes right because I like
- 1:12:59my, my timing is like so off because I get to like the third
- 1:13:03and I'm riding a foot further back on her than I should be.
- 1:13:06You know, have you ever tried doubling and running barrels?
- 1:13:08Like is it being the guy in the back?
- 1:13:11Like you can't see it, right? So I'm like, what is wrong with
- 1:13:14me? Like my first is great.
- 1:13:16My second is quick. And then I get to 3rd and I shut
- 1:13:18the bed like every time. But it was my saddle.
- 1:13:21My saddle would slide. So again, learning fit and it's
- 1:13:24like the pad makes a difference. The cinch makes a difference.
- 1:13:27You know, if you got one of those struggles.
- 1:13:28So I, I actually thinned out my pad.
- 1:13:32I thinned it out because made the saddle fit better, you know,
- 1:13:36and then my cinch when I'm running, I have to have a sticky
- 1:13:42cinch because she runs with so much force.
- 1:13:45But the first year that I measured her angles to the to
- 1:13:49the year that I got in this saddle, I opened up her angles
- 1:13:523-4 degrees. Oh wow, 4°.
- 1:13:55Now it might not be as much on the ground as I'd like, but put
- 1:13:58that into 50 or 60 or 80 strides, right.
- 1:14:01I'm I'm and I ride a Midget like she's only 14114 two.
- 1:14:05She's quick. Yeah, she's a little girl, but
- 1:14:08she's she's got a heck of a stride on her And yeah, when she
- 1:14:11stretches right out that saddle, the saddle would just go.
- 1:14:14But working with fit and all of that stuff, it's like, OK, try
- 1:14:18this, try this, try this, you know, and then you go back to
- 1:14:20Wendy, right? Because she's got so much good
- 1:14:22information. And it's like, OK, your cinch is
- 1:14:24too long, right? You know, that makes a
- 1:14:26difference. How does that horse feel?
- 1:14:28Like we're definitely there for the movement part of it.
- 1:14:31And that's what I'm in the US for, is the movement part of it.
- 1:14:33And like 1%, that's all I care. 1%, That's cool.
- 1:14:37You'll get there. Yeah, we'll get there.
- 1:14:38You'll probably get more than that.
- 1:14:40Hey, I'll take anything more than that.
- 1:14:42But you know, if I'm going to set a goal for myself and get a
- 1:14:44goal for, you know, I want to Rep in every corner of this
- 1:14:47country, right? Michigan, Louisiana, I mean,
- 1:14:50girl in Idaho, I'll try it. You know, I want all of them at
- 1:14:54least try, right? I mean, you just want that
- 1:14:58opportunity. I just want the opportunity in
- 1:14:59it. I mean, we only had 4 million
- 1:15:01people in Alberta and we did a lot.
- 1:15:04Yeah, we got 300 million here. Yeah, you got, you got more
- 1:15:08horses than we have population. It's yeah, and, and less miles,
- 1:15:14but I mean, more coverage. We have more social media now.
- 1:15:16We have more, you know, everybody has a story.
- 1:15:20Everybody has a story like, you know, we got.
- 1:15:23And the ability is like, you know, everybody's got a story.
- 1:15:25So you have a bad back. Maybe your saddle's too deep.
- 1:15:29Yeah. Right.
- 1:15:30Everybody thinks they need that deep seat to keep them secure.
- 1:15:33You need the seat pocket to keep you secure, right?
- 1:15:36But girls with back injuries drop that saddle down to a
- 1:15:39normal the like the the cantle, you know, a Cheyenne roll a
- 1:15:44pencil roll, drop that down a little bit and then see how that
- 1:15:50makes your back feel. Yeah.
- 1:15:51Right. There's so many different things
- 1:15:54on a saddle that can create your body to hurt, my body to hurt,
- 1:15:57right? You know, that's interesting.
- 1:15:59And the difference between a men's and women's trees.
- 1:16:02Look at your knees when you sit in that seat.
- 1:16:04Oh, I know, right? That's the one thing that I
- 1:16:06remembered from sitting and I want to sit in it again and.
- 1:16:11I probably leave one for you to play.
- 1:16:12On because like it would it, it was insane like sitting in and
- 1:16:16then I sat in the in the roping saddle.
- 1:16:18You had a men's tree there and I sat and I'm like this is awful.
- 1:16:21This is like what I sit in now and I, I went back and sat in
- 1:16:25that barrel saddle and where my where my legs just naturally
- 1:16:29went incredible. It felt so much better because
- 1:16:34even now, like, so I have AI ride in a Sheridan saddle right
- 1:16:38now and every time I get in that saddle, I have to like push my
- 1:16:43legs forward, like to like where 'cause where I where my legs
- 1:16:48were in this saddle versus like where they are in my current
- 1:16:52saddle. Oh my God damn.
- 1:16:54You know, I get more. Yeah.
- 1:16:56And then like, because it is more like the stirrups piece.
- 1:16:59Like, yeah, I can start that way, but getting them to stay
- 1:17:02there is kind of hard. Yeah, just watch your knees.
- 1:17:05Like if you sit in that saddle, if your knees pop out, it's kind
- 1:17:11of like in barrels, like you know how you blow off the second
- 1:17:14barrel like that? They just won't finish it.
- 1:17:17It's probably because two strides before that is where the
- 1:17:20problem hit. Like the horse didn't prepare
- 1:17:22for the turn, something like that, right?
- 1:17:23So then all of a sudden they lost balance and they blow off.
- 1:17:26Well, your knees are pointing out, go back 2 steps, go back to
- 1:17:30your femur and like your pelvis and your SI joints and see where
- 1:17:34that problem is because it's probably there causing it to do
- 1:17:38this. So girls that complain about my
- 1:17:40knees hurt when I ride so they go get a crooked stirrup.
- 1:17:43We'll go back to the tree, go back up.
- 1:17:46I was going to say, 'cause that's something.
- 1:17:47Like the base, right, 'cause like the, the tree is like the
- 1:17:50base of everything between you and the horse.
- 1:17:53Exactly the base. It, it's the what connects us,
- 1:17:56right? So if you've got like, you can't
- 1:17:58put a, you know, square peg in a round hole, right, right.
- 1:18:01So sometimes we're just keep doing that over and over again
- 1:18:03and 'cause we're, that's, it's normal.
- 1:18:06You know, women never rode way back in the day.
- 1:18:09Men rode and when women started riding, they rode side saddle
- 1:18:14and then we progressed, right. So we have a lot of trees that
- 1:18:19have a patent on them for like it's a narrow twist for a woman.
- 1:18:22It's this for a woman, it's that for a woman, different options
- 1:18:24for a woman, but not from the base, like not from the actual
- 1:18:29base. So when you like talk about the
- 1:18:32horses are different now than 20 years ago.
- 1:18:37Is that kind of where you see Franco saddles is a little bit
- 1:18:41different than everybody else? Like you feel like you guys are
- 1:18:44kind of we didn't start until 10 years ago.
- 1:18:47So so you guys are kind of like, you know, evolving, evolving
- 1:18:52more ahead of the game a little bit or I wouldn't say that we're
- 1:18:55smarter than anybody or anything like that, not at all.
- 1:18:57But what I would say is that I don't care what the horses
- 1:19:01change like because we can hand make and custom those trees if
- 1:19:04we need to and we make that adjustment for what we're
- 1:19:08dealing with now. Like in New Zealand, there isn't
- 1:19:12like they're breeding. So when Nancy first started
- 1:19:14sending me saddles, she's sending me all these like 7 inch
- 1:19:17gullets and full quarter horse bars.
- 1:19:19And I'm like, I'm just not getting, I'm just not getting
- 1:19:22it. Like I don't, I can't.
- 1:19:24She's like, well, you need to sell saddles.
- 1:19:25But then she came over and she's like, oh, I get it now because I
- 1:19:30got so much thoroughbred influence in her horses, even
- 1:19:32though they might be like beefy on the bottom and thick horses,
- 1:19:35their Withers aren't, right. So she's now realizing, like my
- 1:19:41most common tree is a 6 1/2 quarter horse, this most common
- 1:19:45right now to fit a multitude of horses.
- 1:19:48So I usually start with that and then go from there to, you know,
- 1:19:52see what that looks like, see what that fits like.
- 1:19:54But yeah, I know as far as like our evolution of it now we're
- 1:19:57just, we're just going with the flow.
- 1:19:58We just, you know, we can measure that horse.
- 1:20:01We can, we can put a, you know, put the top line in.
- 1:20:05So that at the factory they can follow that top line like I've
- 1:20:07got some top lines that the Withers just keep going for
- 1:20:10days. The the tree itself just has to
- 1:20:14accommodate that. Yeah, we can do that if we don't
- 1:20:17have something standard, you know, we can go from a six inch
- 1:20:21gullet to an 8 inch gullet to, you know, 4242° bars, you know
- 1:20:26that angle thing which is like 43 and some and 98.
- 1:20:29Now there's I don't know what numbers they got.
- 1:20:30They everybody's got their secret numbers.
- 1:20:32I mean, and I think it's just to try and get away from that like,
- 1:20:36oh, I, I need a 14 inch or I need this or I need that, right?
- 1:20:39You know what I mean? Like people get to or if you
- 1:20:42give them a number, that's what they focus on, right?
- 1:20:44And you can't focus on that. You have to focus on what you're
- 1:20:47looking at. So if you're looking at A at a
- 1:20:51bar and it goes like wings out when you're, you know, you cinch
- 1:20:55the saddle up and all of a sudden your leather's away from
- 1:20:58your horse at the bottom. Well, that that's putting that
- 1:21:00pressure point all the way down that horse's spine.
- 1:21:03So we need to narrow that up and get that saddle to hug that
- 1:21:07horse so it can move freely and then get it to fit us at the
- 1:21:11same time. So we're not really trying to
- 1:21:14change the saddle world at all. Like we still need to have that
- 1:21:17same. It's just that we look at our
- 1:21:18horses and the breeding and the, you know, we used to have the
- 1:21:22foundation quarter horses, the big stocky guys, right, that can
- 1:21:26pull Playhouse and you know, all kinds of things.
- 1:21:29And then we get the race horses and then we put them together
- 1:21:32and then we create genetically like something different,
- 1:21:35something different. Look at our dogs, they say.
- 1:21:37Let's. Measure like both of the girls
- 1:21:39because they're built so differently.
- 1:21:40Well, they didn't bring my tool, which is like I got halfway here
- 1:21:44and went shit, but I can show you.
- 1:21:47Yeah. Just things that you look for.
- 1:21:49Heck yeah. Yeah, that'd be so interesting.
- 1:21:51So let's take a break really quick.
- 1:21:53Look at shoulders, right? These shoulders need to be
- 1:21:56moving free, right? The first thing I look for is
- 1:21:59the top of her shoulder. Blade.
- 1:22:00The hard part, right? Find the Bony part.
- 1:22:03So it's right here. So she's actually only got
- 1:22:06between her and her with her. She's only got a really narrow
- 1:22:09little gullet right in here like she needs.
- 1:22:11To be OK. Right then we look down here and
- 1:22:14we find the the last rib because these last two ribs are like us
- 1:22:18they're floating. So we don't want any pressure
- 1:22:20with the tree on these last two ribs.
- 1:22:22So we kind of got from here to here and and then we look at the
- 1:22:25length of the weather, right. She comes back to here, so we
- 1:22:28can't have your seat coming back in too early.
- 1:22:30And then we look down here how how much room does she have to
- 1:22:33cinch right. So her flat spot is quite.
- 1:22:37Some horses are like they got a belly that starts right here,
- 1:22:39right? So you don't have this big area
- 1:22:41to cinch a horse up to. Yeah, because where should the
- 1:22:44cinch? Like realistically, where should
- 1:22:46the cinch be? We want the cinch to be
- 1:22:48comfortable, so it doesn't OK. Right.
- 1:22:50We want we. Want her shoulder to move back
- 1:22:52and forth? Free in here.
- 1:22:54Right. So then we throw the saddle on
- 1:22:56and we see where it kind of sits on her.
- 1:22:58I'm looking for the gullet. I want 2 fingers here, right?
- 1:23:01So see where this concho is, Look for the conchos.
- 1:23:05That's where your hard parts of your tree is.
- 1:23:08So if we want, what was the conchos, The conchos that you
- 1:23:11can't screw into leather, so you can screw into wood.
- 1:23:14So I want to see where my conchos sit next to her shoulder
- 1:23:18blade, see how it's like lined right up.
- 1:23:21So this gullet is sitting right on her shoulder blade.
- 1:23:23So that's where that cartilage in your ears, like you get
- 1:23:26cauliflower ears. She's going to have that hair.
- 1:23:28So this gullet's too wide for her.
- 1:23:30OK. And how do you know how wide
- 1:23:32this gullet is? The gullet is the 6 3/4 and then
- 1:23:36this is a Quarter Horse bar. OK, so if I was to cinch this
- 1:23:41bad boy up, that's the other thing most people like.
- 1:23:45Could you just sit? I got no room back here.
- 1:23:48So this tree is sitting flat on her back right now, So it's like
- 1:23:52pushing on her without even getting in the saddle yet.
- 1:23:54Yeah. OK.
- 1:23:56And I have an adjustable rigging on these, Right.
- 1:23:58So I want this saddle. I know.
- 1:24:00And Wendy likes to put her saddles way back.
- 1:24:02And I I just don't. I want my.
- 1:24:04I want to be in the center of this horse.
- 1:24:06Yeah. OK.
- 1:24:07So if I take a triangle from here to here, perfect.
- 1:24:11Isosceles triangle. This is our middle.
- 1:24:14This is where she's going to be balanced.
- 1:24:15Not not that's where you're going to be.
- 1:24:18Your best balance on your horse is in the center of her.
- 1:24:21OK, so this cinch is completely the wrong length and it's just
- 1:24:24for demonstration purposes only. So please don't ever ride your
- 1:24:27horse with a cinch like this. This length.
- 1:24:30I don't care about the cinch part so much, but the but.
- 1:24:34What's good is like to see you explain what.
- 1:24:37Yeah, and not a good thing, right?
- 1:24:39I mean, yeah, this is not a good, this is not a good thing.
- 1:24:42It. Looks like, but yeah.
- 1:24:44How do you how do you know when it's wrong?
- 1:24:46Like the first thing I look for is that saddle actually look
- 1:24:48like it's sitting. Like if I was to put this on a
- 1:24:51saddle stand, like we look at this one, this is what a saddle
- 1:24:54should look like, right? Like, you got your angle up.
- 1:24:57You see a lot of saddles when they get on a horse look like
- 1:24:59they're sitting down. Your goal, it's too wide at that
- 1:25:02point because it's falling down on your horse.
- 1:25:04So then you got to pick that up. Yeah.
- 1:25:07So the bars might be right. Like this part might be right.
- 1:25:11We can't pad the bars. We have to have the right bars
- 1:25:14on a horse in order for them to move.
- 1:25:16Otherwise you put a pressure point down their back.
- 1:25:18But if you get the gullet, pull that gullet in and keep the bars
- 1:25:22the same, you might have a better fit, right?
- 1:25:24So that's why like the options are endless on our barrel
- 1:25:28saddles. We have adjustable riggins OK so
- 1:25:30we can use the front or the back so.
- 1:25:35Oh, I see. I like that.
- 1:25:38So just quick and easy. The only problem with this is
- 1:25:41that sometimes it's here and on the other side.
- 1:25:43It's on the other side. So now your tree is going to
- 1:25:45twist when you go to cinch it up, it's a tree or barrel.
- 1:25:48Saddles especially still have a little bit of flex to them,
- 1:25:50right? They're like a creaky old wood
- 1:25:51chair, like they got to break in.
- 1:25:53They still have a little bit of movement.
- 1:25:55OK, so I'm happy with it going straight down.
- 1:25:58Now you cinch this bad boy up and I don't need to put a whole
- 1:26:04bunch of pressure on it. OK?
- 1:26:07I just need to. I just need to see how this tree
- 1:26:10is going to react when I put some pressure on it.
- 1:26:13OK, so I add like 5 lbs. I'm going to put my hand under
- 1:26:16this poncho because this is what's going to, it's either
- 1:26:19going to pull in on my hand or it's not.
- 1:26:21So this isn't terrible. This time we know if our bars
- 1:26:23are correct. So put your hand over there.
- 1:26:25When I cinch up on that saddle, does it squeeze on your hand or
- 1:26:28does it pull away? Do it again.
- 1:26:31Kind of pulls away. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:26:33So that's what we want. OK, So when that, if that does
- 1:26:37that, we know our bars are probably correct.
- 1:26:39So how do we know that we go to the front of that horse and we
- 1:26:41look at them straight on. Does that leather?
- 1:26:45Does this leather here match the shoulder?
- 1:26:49Looks like. It looks pretty good.
- 1:26:51Yeah. So we know now that her bars are
- 1:26:53like a Quarter Horse bar, OK, Right.
- 1:26:55Yeah. So in our world, that's a 40°
- 1:26:58bar, but in somebody else's world, it could be a.
- 1:27:02Who knows that, right? But it's understanding what
- 1:27:04you're looking for as a rider. Does that settle fit like this
- 1:27:07Fits. Yeah.
- 1:27:08And it doesn't pinch down on her.
- 1:27:10But I think your gullet's too wide, because when you go into
- 1:27:13force, yeah, it's going to hit on the shoulder.
- 1:27:16Blades so this gullet is still. Too wide.
- 1:27:19That gullet is too wide. Interesting, and this is a 6IN.
- 1:27:22Three quarters 3/4. Holy shit.
- 1:27:24But look back here. You're flat on her back.
- 1:27:27Yeah, So I don't want that either because now this saddle
- 1:27:30is automatically pushing on her. All I know right now is I have
- 1:27:33narrowed it down to you need a quarter horse bar.
- 1:27:35OK, so now I need to find the gullet because if I can narrow
- 1:27:39up that gullet, see, because it's sitting down here, it's
- 1:27:42also sitting down here, which is why we have that on her back
- 1:27:45right now. Then you get on there and bomb,
- 1:27:47bomb. Right, Right.
- 1:27:49It can't it can't be perfect all the time.
- 1:27:51Yeah, right. So and then I look, how is she
- 1:27:55sent? OK, that's on the back.
- 1:27:58That's on the back of our rating.
- 1:28:00So there's some girls that are like, oh, can I get a saddle
- 1:28:02that fits both horses and possibly if they're fairly
- 1:28:04close, I can use one on the front, one on the back, right.
- 1:28:07And I can use a three quarter inch pad or 1/2 inch pad like I
- 1:28:09can move it so that you can use the same saddle on two different
- 1:28:13horses. Yeah, but it may not.
- 1:28:15So we know that this we, we've got one narrowed down.
- 1:28:19Yeah, we, we know we need a, a quarter horse bar like a
- 1:28:21standard quarter horse. So then we go to the next saddle
- 1:28:27there so it sits a little better.
- 1:28:29This is a 6 1/2 and fill. It.
- 1:28:32And now we've got a little bit of space right there.
- 1:28:36You want that little bit of space up there.
- 1:28:39I just got to get rid of all my straps and parts and pieces.
- 1:28:43Like this is like real life stuff right?
- 1:28:44I'm just going to throw saddles all day long.
- 1:28:46Saddles don't look perfect on the stand.
- 1:28:48They might have straps. Yes, you have their space back.
- 1:28:51There now, and it's not like pressing down on her back.
- 1:28:54So this one is a 6 1/2. See where my shoulder like I
- 1:29:00still feel that it's too wide in the gullet.
- 1:29:04I would go a six and 1/4. On 6 1/4.
- 1:29:07Or 6 right? Because what was that other?
- 1:29:101. 6 3/4 OK, so and it's funny because our trees are the same,
- 1:29:15but our factories are different. One was made in the old factory.
- 1:29:18We have a new factory. We have one because we need to
- 1:29:21split up. We have our women's saddles in
- 1:29:23one and our men's saddles in another now.
- 1:29:25And you know, our tree is what we go by, but how that saddle is
- 1:29:31put together, the factories are different, right?
- 1:29:36So now we're going to going through consistency with all of
- 1:29:38our women's saddles are getting made in the same place.
- 1:29:41Now when they put that leather all together, it doesn't change
- 1:29:45the tree, but it changes the feel and appearance sometimes,
- 1:29:48right? But I don't care as long as
- 1:29:53there we go feel that. So when I cinch this girl up,
- 1:29:57put your hand under there, how do you feel?
- 1:30:00Pulls away, right? Yeah.
- 1:30:02It pulls away from you. So that tree opens up.
- 1:30:05Those shoulders can go through and you.
- 1:30:07Yeah, like the. Yeah, like, like if you put your
- 1:30:11hand under here, there's no pressure added to your hand as
- 1:30:14you cinch, as you cinch it up. OK, so it's loose now, right?
- 1:30:21Now when I cinch it up, feel how it pulls away from your hand.
- 1:30:23Just a hair. Yeah.
- 1:30:25So that tree opens up. So now those shoulders can move
- 1:30:27free underneath here, and that saddle's not going to impinge
- 1:30:31them. And you should.
- 1:30:34Yeah, it's not supposed to because we don't want to clamp
- 1:30:38down on that horse. We want to hug that horse,
- 1:30:41Right? And now I've still got my space
- 1:30:43back here, right? So that tree is not sitting dead
- 1:30:47on her back. Now when she goes to move, she's
- 1:30:50got room to move. After she's in a full body
- 1:30:54sweat, that whole back should be wet.
- 1:30:56Yeah. OK, if we have a big dry patch
- 1:31:01again, go back to Wendy's videos, close that horse down.
- 1:31:04Is that does that spot dry faster?
- 1:31:07That's a hot spot. That's something to keep an eye
- 1:31:09on. Right now.
- 1:31:10We should have a full wet back again.
- 1:31:12I don't really like this, right? I would narrow that up just a
- 1:31:16little bit more for her to make sure that how old is she. 15. 15
- 1:31:22So the saddle's not meant to fit a horse its entire life, right?
- 1:31:26They're very different from the time they're 3 till they're 30.
- 1:31:29So then it's like, OK, well, I can't afford $5000.
- 1:31:33Every time a horse changes, it's like, OK, cool.
- 1:31:36So in Canada, I started, if you're in a Franco, I'll be
- 1:31:38loyal to you. You'll be loyal to me.
- 1:31:40Your saddle women are famous for gaining 40 lbs, losing 40 lbs.
- 1:31:44I gave my horse to my kid. My horse went lame.
- 1:31:45I'm changing a different horse. I'd have to buy a new saddle.
- 1:31:48Come back to me. I'm we're going to have a used
- 1:31:50market as well. So come back to me.
- 1:31:53It might not be exactly what you ordered or the custom that you
- 1:31:56had before, but I mean, we can make that horse happy and you
- 1:31:58happy at the same time. You gain 40 lbs.
- 1:32:00It doesn't really matter to me if your saddle's still in really
- 1:32:02good condition, somebody else can use that saddle and I can
- 1:32:06find one that works for you. So this is where I would try
- 1:32:09with her. I'd put a just a nice half inch,
- 1:32:12three quarter inch pad underneath her and give her and
- 1:32:16see what she feels like. What seat size do you run in a
- 1:32:191515? OK, so this one is a 14.
- 1:32:22So what's going to happen is that's going to pull you forward
- 1:32:24when you go to stop. I just want you to feel her
- 1:32:27movement in it, even though you might be kind of buffing forward
- 1:32:30just a little bit. But yeah, that's OK.
- 1:32:32That's going to be, that'll be the saddle that I would put on
- 1:32:35her for now. And I would and I would again
- 1:32:39try to narrow up that gullet to make sure that she's
- 1:32:41comfortable. Yeah, because it'll notice it in
- 1:32:43the stop. She'll either push back into
- 1:32:45that saddle or she will not. OK, hey, so far.
- 1:32:49Yeah. So that's where I would start
- 1:32:51with her. We appreciate you coming out and
- 1:32:53doing all of this with us. I appreciate it.
- 1:32:55I'm pretty pumped. Are you good?
- 1:32:57Are you pumped? Yeah.
- 1:32:59Do you want to say? Yeah, I'm pumped.
- 1:33:00I'm great. Say thank you too.
- 1:33:01Thank you. You friends, everyone's gonna be
- 1:33:09friends, and plus, you better ride like you ride.
