- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Today in October,
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: I'm sure you've noticed the sort of progressive insanity
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: that occurs around our cities with macabre and ghoulish displays
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: of dismembered body parts and bones and open graves and the undead and so on and
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: so forth.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: And this could be disturbing for us and with good reason.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: But I think that other cultures in a sense might be less disturbed at other times
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: because in Europe,
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: it's quite common to see bones in churches that actually is normal in a sense,
- 0:46SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: the bones of saints actually displayed for veneration,
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: but nevertheless, clear Reminders of death year round, not just in October.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: And the saints often themselves would have skulls on their desks or in their cells
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: to be reminders to them of death.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And that's actually not a bad thing.
- 1:10SPEAKER_00: So I think when you go around and you see these strange expressions of our culture,
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: it's worth using them, I think, as reminders.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Our culture doesn't really believe in death and kind of ignores
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: and pretends it doesn't exist.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: And then sort of goes over the top around Halloween and almost makes a mockery
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: of it,
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: reinforcing its own sort of delusion that it doesn't exist
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: when it very much does exist.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: And that's what the gospel today is pointing out to us.
- 1:40SPEAKER_00: It's what Christ is saying.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: He's not talking about the boss coming to check on your work.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: He's talking about the end of your life.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: He's talking about your death.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: He's talking about The way that each of us needs to live our lives.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: We have to live our lives as if truly the master could come at any time as
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: if truly this might be the last day that I have.
- 2:09SPEAKER_00: We live in this unreal world in which we're pursuing productivity and You know,
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: production and getting things done and being busy.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: And we promise ourselves that all those things that we wanted to do, well, I'll do them later.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I'll have time on the summer costs, you know, or after I retire.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm going to do, all those things.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm going to be the person I really want to be.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm going to, you know, spend time with the people who are important in my life.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: That's what I'm going to take care of all those things.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: You know, but right now, my gosh, like today, I've got five, six, 10, 20 things to do.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: You know, I've got to do those things first.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: And then after that, you know, I'll get to those other things.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: Which I know are important, but I just don't have time right now.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: And Christ is pointing out that this day today could very easily be your last day.
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: It'd be very simple for a car to plow into any of us.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's not uncommon.
- 3:01SPEAKER_00: We see that all the time.
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: We have these complicated bodies that we take for granted
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: that can easily stop working in many ways at any time.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: Today, in a very real sense, could be our last day.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: This could be all we have.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: What am I going to spend today doing?
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: How am I going to live today?
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: Am I going to be like those servants that Christ talks about who are ready when
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: the master comes, who are awaiting his arrival, who are prepared.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Always makes me think of St. John Fisher.
- 3:33SPEAKER_00: They woke him up at like five in the morning and told him,
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: oh, the king has decreed you'll be executed today.
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: And he said, well, it's what time?
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: And they said, oh, 11 o'clock.
- 3:41SPEAKER_00: He said, okay, well, wake me up around 10.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: And he went back to sleep.
- 3:45SPEAKER_00: He was ready to go.
- 3:47SPEAKER_00: He was at peace.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: You know, I've got a few more hours to sleep.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: I'll sleep.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: I'll get up and then go to meet my Lord.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: I doubt that any of us are in that situation, that if I truly knew That today was my last day.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: If I truly had execution or some sort of a life-threatening operation hanging
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: over me tomorrow, I might do things differently today.
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: I might reach out to someone who I need to reach out to.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: I might resolve something in my life.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: I might spend some time In prayer,
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: I might do something other than just immersing myself in the rat race or,
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: wasting my time scrolling through meaningless things on our infinite internet.
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: If you've ever had a close brush with death,
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: that has happened to me a few times,
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: at least for a little while, you realize that everything after that is a gift.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: All the rest of your life is a gift.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: It's like, I shouldn't even be alive.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: What am I even doing here?
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: Why am I even here, right?
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: Why have I been sent back here?
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: For what reason?
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: For what good?
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: What can I do?
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: I wasn't sent back here to watch another TikTok video.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: I was sent back here for a purpose,
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: to do something,
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: to make a difference, to live today as fully as I can, to put my whole self into it.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: That's the invitation of Christ today.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Today in the Eucharist,
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Christ comes to us as he always does by allowing his eternity to touch our time.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: In the Eucharist, we reach through and touch the Paschal mystery.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: The eternal present becomes present to us today, now, in this moment.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: Tomorrow never comes.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Not for God and not even really for us.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: All we have is today.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: When tomorrow comes, it'll be today.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: There is no tomorrow.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: So when I tell myself, I'm going to do that tomorrow.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: I'll get in touch with that person tomorrow.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: I'll fix that relationship tomorrow.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: I'll do all those things that I really always wanted to do tomorrow
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: because I'm just too busy today.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: I'm going to keep living my life that way.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: One day at a time.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: Tomorrow will never come.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: And one day it truly will be that day.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: My last day.
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: The last day I have before I come and bring everything that I have before my Lord and King.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: Now that he won't be merciful, but what do I want to bring?
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: What do I want to show for my life?
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Who do I want to be?
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: A cog in the wheel,
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: a consumer of social media,
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: or someone who has done their best to live their life to the full,
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: to give everything,
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: to take advantage of every moment, to rejoice in the beauty and wonder that is life.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Let us ask the Lord to grant us that grace.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: Let us ask the intercession of the North American martyrs,
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Jean de Bebeuf, Isaac Jog, and companions.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: They were people who lived every day as if it was their last because working with
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: the people they did,
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: the indigenous peoples at that time,
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: every day where it was likely to be their last, and for some of them it was.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: They died martyrs' deaths.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Doing what they felt called to do.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: What do I feel called to do?
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: What will I do today?
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: How will I take advantage of this great and beautiful gift that the Lord has given me?
